Gerald Durrell

200books1,661followers
Gerald "Gerry" Malcolm Durrell was born in India in 1925. His elder siblings are Lawrence Durrell, Leslie Durrell, and Margaret Durrell. His family settled on Corfu when Gerald was a boy and he spent his time studying its wildlife. He relates these experiences in the trilogy beginning with My Family And Other Animals, and continuing with Birds, Beasts, And Relatives and The Garden Of The Gods. In his books he writes with wry humour and great perception about both the humans and the animals he meets.

On leaving Corfu he returned to England to work on the staff of Whipsnade Park as a student keeper. His adventures there are told with characteristic energy in Beasts In My Belfry. A few years later, Gerald began organising his own animal-collecting expeditions. The first, to the Cameroons, was followed by expeditions to Paraguay, Argentina and Sierra Leone. He recounts these experiences in a number of books, including The Drunken Forest. Gerald also visited many countries while shooting various television series, including An Amateur Naturalist. In 1958 Gerald Durrell realised a lifelong dream when he set up the Jersey Zoological Park, followed a few years later by the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust.

Gerald was married twice; Jacquie Durrell (1951-1979), Lee Durrell (1979-1995).

Gerald Durrell's style is exuberant, passionate and acutely observed. He died in 1995.

After viewing the comical episodes of the Durrell family in Corfu on PBS, I was determined to read a book authored by a member of this clan. They were certainly prolific in their writing (both Lawrence and Gerald). This was a delightful set of stories which offered a very pleasant interlude for my reading. I was tempted to question the veracity of so very many episodes of mishaps and humor, but I realize that the author is the possessor of a delightful sense of humor and the whole truth is irrelevant.

Gran descubrimiento, Durrell!!

This book's hilarious. I laughed out loud a bunch. It reminds me of that British TV show 'Keeping Up Appearances' in some ways. The Durrells were one whacky bunch, especially the brother Larry (who was also a writer - I found one of his books at Goodwill last week but I couldn't stand the long line so I left it on the counter and walked out, then spent an hour yesterday scanning their shelves but I couldn't find it.)

One story didn't really come alive for me like the others ("The Michelin Man," it has a pretty nice, albeit predictable, ending, though.) Other than that, four of the stories are hilarious and the one that comes out of left field is pretty creepy in a good way.

[Note: I read this book a couple years ago and in the last few weeks I had the sudden urge to re-read the last story, 'The Entrance.' I disagree as one reviewer said, that it ruined the book. Yeah, it's not funny. So what. As funny as Durrell can be, and he can be a riot, at that same level, in 'The Entrance,' he is creepy. Anyway, just re-read it. Still love it. Now I'm even more curious. Did Durrell ever comment on this story, in an interview or anything? I've looked but haven't found anything. Most of the stories here read like memoir/essays (although 'The Michelin Man' is magical), that I almost wonder if Durrell didn't actually find this manuscript in the way the story suggests. Did he write the story within the story? I'm guessing he did. Mostly because of the writing style and because the manuscript author shares some of Durrell's interests (in food/wine, animals and books.) Maybe we'll never know. If anybody does have a clue or an opinion, let me know, I'd love to hear it.]

A review, despite having last read this more than fifteen years ago: I have to say that though I loved the other four stories in this book, the last one scared me silly when I first read it. Had a horror of mirrors for years, and I sometimes still shy away from them at night.

"Here, from floor to ceiling in every room, are amassed arrays of old books. They line the walls of the narrow staircases; they surround you, envelop you, a wonderful, warm, scented womb. Pluck the books out, and each smells different. One smells not only of dust but of mushrooms; another of autumn woods, or broom flowers in the hot sun, or roasting chestnuts; some have the acrid, damp smell of coal burning, and others smell of honey. And then, if smells alone were not enough, there is the feel of them in the heavy leather bindings, sleek as a seal, with the golden glitter of the type buried like a vein in the glossy spine. Books as thick as a tree trunk, books as slender as a wand, books printed on paper as dense and soft as a foxglove leaf, paper as white and crisp as ice, or as delicate and brittle as the frost layer on a spider's web. Then the colors of the bindings: sunsets and sunrises, autumn woods aflame, winter hills of heather; the multicolored marbled endpapers like some Martian cloud formation. And all this sensuous pleasure to delight you before you have even examined the titles (The Great Red Island: Madagascar; Peking to Lhasa; Through the Brazilian Wilderness; Sierrre Leone: Its People, Products and Secret Societies), and then you come to the splendid moment when you open the book as you would a magic door, and immediately the shop around you disappears and you stand, smelling the rich smell of the Amazon with Wallace, bargaining for ivory with Mary Kingsley, facing a charging gorilla with Sidney Carton, laughing with Edwardian gentleman in a boat, travelling to China with Marco Polo - all this you do standing on the uneven, uncarpeted floor, without the expenditure of a penny." from pages 94 and 95

This book is a collection of Durrell's short stories. Not his best work, but wonderful all the same.

«Gran Dio onnipotente, guardate!

This is a collection of unrelated stories written by the late British naturalist, Gerald Durrell. Unlike his other books such as, My Family and Other Animals or Birds, Beasts and Relatives, this set of short stories are more about his family and other assorted people he came across in his life and travels.

All of the stories contain humor, some more than others. The first two stories, The Picnic and The Maiden Voyage, are about his family going on an ill-fated picnic outing to welcome home his brother Lawrence, and an even more ill-fated tour on a Greek cruise ship. These two stories have humorous moments, although some of it seems a bit canned. The third likewise is a little cliche as he meets an old girlfriend in Venice and gets sucked into her zany life dramas.

Some of the stories show a glimmer of the brilliant writer he could have been had he applied himself and, he freely admitted he never applied himself for the reason that he hated to write and only wrote in order to provide a financial resource for his animal advocacy and protection endeavors.

I am speaking of the last two. The penultimate story, The Michelin Man is narrated by a chef in an obscure French village containing an even more obscure restaurant that nevertheless sported one Michelin star. The chef gives a fantastic story as to how his restaurant gained this coveted recognition. Is it true? Doubtful, but it was a great story!

The last story is in a class of its own and almost makes one wonder if Durrell wrote it or plagiarized the story from someone with real ability. In fact he presents the story as if it were a manuscript accidentally found by a book seller. It is titled, The Entrance and is a ghost story/psychological thriller that is spine tingling.

I read it on a rainy day and finished it at two in the morning, which probably added to the suspenseful atmosphere of that particular tale.

Do I recommend this book? Sure. The few well-written stories, especially The Entrance, are worth the price of the entire book.

If you’ve read his autobiographical trilogy or seen The Durrells, you’ll be familiar with the quirky, chaotic family atmosphere that reigns in the first two pieces: “The Picnic, about a luckless excursion in Dorset, and “The Maiden Voyage, set on a similarly disastrous sailing in Greece (“Basically, the rule in Greece is to expect everything to go wrong and to try to enjoy it whether it does or not). No doubt there’s some comic exaggeration at work here, especially in “The Public School Education, about running into a malapropism-prone ex-girlfriend in Venice, and “The Havoc of Havelock, in which Durrell, like an agony uncle, lends volumes of the sexologist’s work to curious hotel staff in Bournemouth. The final two France-set stories, however, feel like pure fiction even though they involve the factual framing device of hearing a story from a restaurateur or reading a historical manuscript that friends inherited from a French doctor. “The Michelin Man is a cheeky foodie one with a surprisingly gruesome ending; “The Entrance is a full-on dose of horror worthy of R.I.P. I wouldn’t say this is essential reading for Durrell fans, but it was a pleasant way of passing the time.

i simply like gerald durrell and his (and his family's) adventures. relevant fact: i like the jeeves books as well. i find their whimsy similar. durrell is wodehouse with a naturalist's twist. this book has less naturalist and more whimsy. i tend to like more biology but these are still entertaining. definitely try him if you are a jeeves fan!

A really nice story, that made me smile from the beginning to the end.
The family of the story is quite ordinary, and yet the situations they go trough are funny, even a bit surreal.
Really enjoyed this one, also thanks to the writing style of the author, which I really appreciated.

Gerald Durrell is a masterful comic writer when he wants to be, with an excellent grasp of comic timing and a gift with the language of humor that, if not quite on Wodehousian levels, is still impressive. In his best work, the Corfu books, he melds these gifts with a set of brilliantly-drawn characters, caricatures in some ways, as comic characters often are, and yet nonetheless affectionate caricatures, giving them the depth that makes the reader care about them. In this case, the affection is only natural, as the characters are the members of his immediate family, with the most important being his irascible and self-important oldest brother Larry and his vague and well-meaning mother. The first two stories in this book bring back these characters, much older now than they were in his Corfu books but otherwise unchanged, and they are just as funny as the best parts of “My Family and Other Animals or “Birds, Beasts, and Relatives. The next two stories are also quite funny, but more in the line of the best bits from one of his animal-collecting books: still very amusing, but lacking the characters needed to put them on a level with his best. The final two stories, surprisingly, aren’t really humorous at all. The first starts out as an encomium to the Guide Michelin (alas, Thurber had already done the definitive version of this several decades prior, and Durrell fails to displace him) and finishes up as a long, dark joke. And the last is a Gothic horror story with absolutely no pretensions to be anything else. It doesn’t really make sense, but you may find yourself looking sideways at any mirrors you own for a day or so after reading it anyway.

Absolutely delightful. I am a huge fan of Mr. Durrell's writing, especially his memoirs of his large and rather eccentric family. His is the kind of family who can set out to do the simplest of tasks, ie: plan a picnic for his brother's homecoming, and along the way encounter endless disasters and mishaps. The tales he shares of such misadventures are charming and entertaining enough, but the real highlight of the book is the inclusion of a "manuscript" a friend of Mr. Durrell's lends to him, in which an antique book dealer recalls a goose bump-raising tale of horror involving a mysterious Count, an old, abandoned house and a horrifying creature that lives in its untold number of mirrors. Although everything Gerald Durrell writes is always fascinating, this memoir is worth it just for the story at the end alone. 5/5

It's fascinating to see how Gerald Durrells's writing developed over the years. His imagination flowers and ripens, giving him the ability to write gorgeously outrageous paragraphs describing food, people and animals with an abundance of evocative adjectives and similes. As the writing develops, so do the anecdotes, becoming increasingly entertaining and far fetched - giving a sense that the boundary between fact and fiction has been stretched, if not crossed. And this wonderful book of six short stories demonstrates this evolution better than any other. But don't let any scepticism spoil the read, for the tales are delightful and hilarious (most of them anyway - the last is father macabre!). Durrell is a superb story teller!

I always enjoy the ruckus of the Durrells, even much more than the animal stories. Interestingly, Gerry is as silent as an adult as he was as a child. He observes rather than talks.

I have mixed feelings for this anthology: I enjoyed the family stories (‘The Picnic, ‘The Maiden Voyage), the story starring Ursula (‘The Public School Education) was likeable too, but ‘The Havoc of Havelock was mediocre for me. I really was bored by ‘The Michelin Man, and I didn’t like the end of it.

And the last one well, creepy enough, but leaving the reader without an explanation, without solving the mystery is really upsetting.

Esilarante!

There are six stories. Among them five are of the genre humor which I enjoyed thoroughly. The last is of the genre mystery/horror. It was a comparatively longer read than the rest of the five stories. The title is very apt, since through the five stories either the author alone or along with his family are in such pandemonium, which is sometimes created by them or the people they are involved. I love the British humor. This is my first book by the author Gerald Durrell which I have read . Next, I will move on to the Corfu trilogy.

Definitely one of the best of Durrell's I've read; I read the others in chronological order and they were moving away from the "funny anecdotes" of his early life, and moving (especially in "The Stationary Ark") towards opinion pieces about zoos. But there are some brilliant anecdotes in here. A tip though: DO NOT read the last story late at night. It scared the pants off me! (And still does, when I think about it.)

Just make sure you have something to keep your stomach from aching, as you will laugh so hard that your innards will literally hurt. The best story is "The Picnic" but the story about sailing
with family on a Greek ship is also excruciatingly hilarious. His books about animal collecting are also filled with humour. He loves words like "carunculated", which add to the piquancy.

First class literature

Gerald Durrell had such a wonderful way with words. He could bring scenery alive with his descriptions, cause you to giggle helplessly, or in the case of the last story in this book, fill you with terror.

A nice collection of stories. Some stories about the Durrell family, some about Gerald's escapades on his own, and one, strangely enough, turning out to be a great, spooky tale. Varied, interesting and fun to read.

With this collection of six short stories, Durrell brings us an ebullient band of misfits dripping in classically British, almost Pythonian hilarity. Public School Education, the Michelin Man and the Entrance were my highlights.
