Zoals elk jaar brengen Lucas en zijn moeder de zomer door in het huis van zijn grootvader, ver weg van de hoofdstad. Deze zomer is evenwel anders: zijn grootvader is gestorven, en voor het eerst beginnende mensen in de stad over zijn oorlogsverleden te praten. Wanneer de jonge danseres Caitlin � Lucas� Amerikaanse vriendinnetje van jaren geleden � weer opduikt, wordt alles nog een stuk ingewikkelder. Just before half way I felt the urge to end my reading: after the strong opening scene the pace stalled and what followed were fairly long, written out descriptions of how an adolescent boy, Lucas Beigne, against his will spends his vacation with his mother in a southern city and amuses himself above all with the chain saw of his deceased grandfather. But the oppressive atmosphere (especially this chainsaw), the confrontations with Arab seasonal workers, the mysterious presence of a dancing American girl next door, and the references to the fraught history of war of the grandfather pushed me to read on, and happily so, because after 100 pages the story really started.
We see how Lucas is seduced by extreme right-wing ideas and participates in actions against asylum-seekers, learns about the secret of the war past of his grandfather, falls in love with the girl next door, and gradually gets deeply into trouble. So there are multiple story lines and in that sense the title "Falling" can be understood in different meanings (in reverse order: to fall for a girl, to be carried away by strong personalities, to be trapped, to lose grip, etc).
But it is clear that Provoost especially intended this book as a warning against the racism and extreme right-wing thinking that was in advance in the early 90s; that message gets a lot of attention, and the portrait of the charismatic leader Benoit is striking; rightly Provoost stresses that the most worrying thing resides in the absolute certainty from which Benoit is reasoning, although I think that also the counterpart Caitlin (the American girl) is a bit to selfcertain at the other end of the spectrum. In the midst between those two strong personalities stands the vacillating Lucas (almost all of his sentences start with "Yes, no"), he's a blank slate that isn’t even aware of his past, turning every way the wind blows and not thinking things through.
For a Dutch-language novel this is more than creditable, though I continued to have problems with the writing style and not all developments were really credible. The dramatic outcome is strong, and happily Provoost zooms in on the developments in the head of Lucas: these go from traumatic upheaval and anger, to understanding and hopeful perspective. This book is at least as much a psychological development novel (coming of age) as a political tendency novel. Although this is not a perfect book, the cocktail of themes and focuses is at least meritorious. (rating 2.5 stars)

Hoogstaande (jeugd?)literatuur uit 1994. Een boek dat nergens gedateert overkomt, integendeel: gebouwen in brand steken om asielzoekers weg te houden: november 2019 in Bilzen. Een gladde, manipulerende, in hemdjes gekleed gaande protofascist die gaslighting toepast alsof hij het fenomeen heeft uitgevonden: Benoît uit Vallen IS een spitting image van onze eigen, onafhankelijke, gediplomeerde loodgieter Dries Vanlangenhove anno nu: 'wij gebruiken geen geweld, tenzij we geweld gebruiken. Wij zijn voor een sterke rechtstaat, dura lex en zo, tenzij de barbeque heel gezellig is, dan telt dat niet meer.' Provoost weet dit psychologische spel goed te brengen, al laat ze de zeer bewuste ambiguïteit van het eerste deel van het boek naar het einde toe wel overduidelijk overhellen in een ietwat moraliserende linkse boodschap, wat natuurlijk haar goed recht is. Ik maak me alleen niet te veel illusies dat de adolescenten van vandaag hierin allemaal klakkeloos zouden meegaan.

Отличная подростковая литература. Умеренно серьезная, но достаточно простая сюжетно. Я бы хотела, чтобы эта книга попала мне в руки в мои 15-16. Но это было бы невозможно � книгу перевели только в прошлом году

"Falling" 20th Anniversary Edition: Provoost Anne.
Keeping in mind that this is a translation of a text originally written in Dutch and set in Belgium that explores the consequences of German occupation during WWII, it would be easy to assume that it carries little weight as a global text.
However "Falling" conveys a very important global message about the impact of intolerance, the bi-generational Influence of political choices and the vulnerability of adolescents to radical beliefs.
In an age where radicalization is a hot political topic and governments world wide are passing legislation to identify and contain extreme beliefs, could there be a more relevant look at past ideologies and their attraction for the young who feel disaffected, bored or lonely?
Although Lucas is anticipating a summer of boredom and disconnection it quickly becomes a season discovery. Lucas is at an age where he feels as though he should be 17. He is uncovering his grandfather's past and the reasons underpinning his mother's judgement and feelings of shame towards her father's beliefs. In doing so he rediscovers his childhood friend and her connection to the fraud and atonement between Lucas' late grandfather and Soeur the last surviving nun in the dilapidated convent across the road, Caitlin and her mother.
In addition there is also the renewal or perpetuation of cultural entitlement against migrant workers as a current theme which adds another layer of currency to the text.
Thankfully there is also both atonement and forgiveness which softens the rather graphics scenes of violence and transgression against those most treasured by Lucas.

I had to read this for my Dutch literature class. Going into this book I had very low expectations. I have already read an other book for that class and it was horrible. This book had an actual plot! (such a great surprise) The story has a message about racisme and neonazisme. The author wants to show teenagers the risks of radical ideas (like the ISIS). But the book was written in 1994 so the story is not very appealing anymore for our time period.

The first 100 pages bored me, after that it became a little more interesting but then every single character(not kidding, ALL of them) started to annoy me. Which is sad, because the ending was incredibly beautiful and powerful. If the entire book had been like the ending this would've been a 5-star book, but sadly everything before that was just meh.

I had to read this book for school.
Apparently it's a classic, but it wasn't really special to me. It was well written and I liked the actions that started when the story was halfway, but I feel like 100 pages are waited on descriptions.

Eindelijk uit...wat een stom boek. Kon eerlijk gezegd geen touw aan het verhaal vastknopen en het deed me gewoon niets. De thema's zijn interessant, maar de personages komen niet uit de verf en het geheel deed gewoon niets met me, behalve me vervelen.

3.5. Hace muchos años mi abuela me compró este libro sin saber de qué trataba. Quería hacerme un regalo y probablemente pidió consejo en la librería. Entre una cosa y otra, nunca llegué a leerlo, hasta que recientemente me dio la necesidad de empezar a reducir la lista de novelas pendientes y, sin saber ni siquiera cuál era su argumento, cogí esta. Al principio no consiguió engancharme. Leí unas 60 páginas y me sumí en un parón lector largo del que no parecía haber manera de salir. Quería cambiar de libro porque este no me motivaba en absoluto, pero a la vez me cuesta mucho dejar algo a la mitad. Así que reanudé la lectura. Y entonces, cuando ya me fui adentrando de verdad en los temas del libro, empezó a interesarme. Esta es una novela, como otra reseña de aquí señala, sobre muchos tipos de caídas: caerse bailando, caer en las redes de personas influyentes, caer en ideas radicales y caer en depresión. No tenía ni idea de que iba a ser un libro sobre racismo, neonazismo y xenofobia, y me ha impactado. Veía desde fuera cómo Lucas era arrastrado por Benoit y, aunque tengo muy claro que mis ideas son totalmente opuestas, podía entender cómo lo iba absorbiendo. Como lectora, me ha chocado lo sencilla que parecía esa dinámica de haber encontrado un amigo, que dice cosas "coherentes", que te hace sentir que le debes algo y que os cuidáis mutuamente hasta que ya estás muy metido en algo turbio. Supongo que convencer a la gente de que haga cosas que no quiere hacer es más sencillo de lo que parece, sobre todo con un líder carismático que se cubre bien las espaldas, y por eso la figura de Benoit me ha parecido odiosa a la par que fascinante. Lucas, como un adolescente confundido, en realidad me recuerda a cualquiera de nosotros que pueda no tener meridianamente clara su posición en el mundo. Alguien impresionable, manipulable, que para cuando se da cuenta de lo que verdaderamente está pasando ya no sabe cómo salir de ello. Su historia con Caitlin es bonita, aunque el final es muy duro y me habría gustado que se le dedicaran unas páginas más, porque después de todo lo que ha ido pasando me resulta un cierre algo precipitado. En general, no obstante, estoy contenta por haber seguido leyendo, porque creo que es una historia muy interesante y con ideas importantes.

Lucas gaat ieder jaar met zijn moeder naar zijn opa toe maar dit jaar gaan ze voor het eerst naar zijn huis na zijn dood. hij krijgt dingen te horen over het oorlogsverleden van zijn opa en raakt bevriend met twee mannen naar of die vriendschap wel zo gezond voor hem is. ook is zijn oude vriendinnetje Caitlin er weer en ze raken snel weer bevriend. een zomer die niet alleen zijn leven zal veranderen maar ook die van Caitlin. ik had in het begin moeite om in het verhaal te komen maar vond het al snel een stuk beter. het draait wel om discriminatie maar vond het wel goed uitgewerkt. heb dit in mijn schooltijd geloof ik nooit gelezen maar wel genoten van dit boek ondanks dat ik er moeilijk in kwam maar weet niet of dat aan mij lag of aan het boek.

Toen ik begon met lezen, snapte ik het verhaal niet, het onderwerp sprak me niet aan en ik had geen plezier in het lezen. Maar dan� vanaf pagina 120 ongeveer begon het verhaal me te interesseren en kon ik niet stoppen met lezen en uiteindelijk vond ik het toch een goed boek.

This was a really interesting read. The story is translated from Dutch and the result (strangely) is a kind of dispassionate, almost stark narrative. I found myself deeply engrossed in the tale of Lucas and the mystery surrounding his grandfathers past. Despite being written over twenty years ago, this exploration of survival, patriotism, extremism and radicalization is as powerful and important now as it was when it was written. Sadly, a brief exploration through reviews suggests that students do not appreciate it being set for study. I kind of get it. It’s slow to start and doesn’t deliver the story I was expecting from its first 100 pages. I enjoyed it, but I don’t think I would add it to my book room.

I thought the beginning of the book was very strong. It aroused curiosity and I wanted to immediately continue reading. But then, the middle of the book became a bit boring and wordy. Through the story there are often flash forwards that predict a very exciting and shocking end, but the end isn't that good. It could have been more exciting, I think. The story itself was nice. Despite all the criticisms, I recommend the book because of the strong beginning, the good story and the current topic.

Surprisingly quick read. Went into it knowing nothing, or at least expecting something entirely different from what the book turned out to be.
The writing was a joy to read; intricate, descriptive. It was refreshing, as Dutch writing can often feel dull or unnatural (to me). Good plot, interesting characters.. I would've liked to discover a little bit more backstory though. Things seemed to be going one way in the beginning, and then went a completely other way.

Dit verhaal begint bij de slaapkamer van Lucas zijn opa. Lucas is een jongen die verliefd is op een
meisje; Caitlin. Zij komt net uit het ziekenhuis, en Lucas zijn moeder vind dat hij naar Caitlin toe moe
gaan. Maar helaas durft Lucas dat niet.
Hierna gaan we een stukje terug in de tijd � de periode waarin Lucas zijn opa stierf. De moeder van
Lucas en hijzelf gaan elke zomer naar het huis van zijn opa, nadat hij was gestorven dus ook. Lucas
vond dit helemaal niet leuk, want hij heeft hier geen vrienden. Even later word er bij het huis twee
keer ingebroken. De moeder van Lucas werd hier ontzettend angstig van. Hierom besluit Lucas naar
een wapenwinkel te gaan, om een alarmpistool te kopen. Helaas heeft Lucas niet genoeg geld, maar
wel ontmoet hij in deze winkel Benoit en Alex. Deze twee mensen lieten zich erg inspireren door
Lucas zijn opa; hij was hun grote voorbeeld.
Lucas wilde graag meer weten over zijn opa, want zijn moeder deed altijd heel erg mysterieus over
hem. Benoit en Alex konden Lucas natuurlijk helpen meer informatie te zoeken over zijn opa. Even
later ziet Lucas zijn moeder een paar schilderijen opruimen, de schilderijen die zijn opa heeft
gemaakt. Lucas vraagt aan zijn moeder of ze wat over hem wilt vertellen, maar ze zwijgt. Vervolgens
besluit Lucas om de schilderijen te verkopen, zodat hij wel genoeg geld heft voor een alarmpistool.
Toen ontmoette hij Caitlin. Hij zag haar dansen in het huis naast dat van zijn opa, waar zij woont.
Maar natuurlijk gaat dit verhaal heel anders dan je had gedacht.
Ik vond dit boek erg spannend en leuk, alleen aan de titel te zien leek het mij wel een beetje een saai
boek. Het verhaal speelt zich af in de zomer. De periode van de precieze tijd is niet bekend het kan
nu zijn, maar ook in bijvoorbeeld 1994. Ook speelt dit verhaal zich af in de plaatst Sainte-Antonie in
Amerika. Dit verhaal is geschreven in een ik-perspectief.
De zinnen die de schrijver heeft gemaakt zijn erg mooi. Deze schrijver schrijft heel erg harteloos.
“Met zijn armen probeerde de jongen de stoot af te weren, maar hij kwam te laat, en de punt van
Alex� voet raakte hem in de lenden.� (blz. 167). Zelf vond ik deze zin erg mooi verwoord, net zoals
bijna alle andere zinnen op deze bladzijde. Dit boek is zeker een aanrader als je van verhalen houd
die over vriendschappen gaan.

Bis jetzt haben Lucas und seine Mutter ihre Sommer immer gemeinsam mit dem Großvater in seinem Haus verbracht. Aber seit der alte Mann gestorben ist, hat sich etwas verändert. Die Menschen im Dorf reden über ihn und jedes Mal, wenn Lucas nachfragt, bekommt er keine Antwort, weder von den Nachbarn noch von seiner Mutter. Soeur Béate, die im leerstehenden Kloster neben ihnen wohnt, ist sogar offen feindselig ihnen gegenüber. Dann taucht Caitlin im Kloster auf und alles verändert sich.
Die Geschichte beginnt am Ende, als alles schon passiert ist. Caitlin ist schwer verletzt und Lucas fühlt sich schuldig. So schuldig, dass er sie nicht einmal im Krankenhaus besuchen konnte. Jetzt reden die Menschen nicht nur über seinen Großvater, sondern auch über ihn. Was ist geschehen?
Anne Provoost erzählt von einem Jungen, der den geliebten Großvater auf einmal in einem anderen Licht sehen musste und damit nicht zurechtkam. Lucas fühlt sich mit seinen Fragen alleine gelassen. Der einzige Mensch, der ihm Antworten geben kann, ist der Journalist Benoit. Er ist das, was für Lucas einem Freund am nächsten kommt und auch wenn manchmal ein ungutes Gefühl hat, sucht er doch mehr und mehr den Kontakt zu ihm. Als er endlich erkennt, was sich hinter Benoits scheinbar freundlicher Fassade versteckt, ist es schon zu spät.
Lucas' Weg in die falsche Richtung war für mich aus Außenstehende klar zu sehen, auch ohne zu wissen, wie alles ausgehen würde. Das ist teilweise dem Alter des Buchs geschuldet, heute würde man so eine Geschichte wahrscheinlich ein wenig subtiler schreiben. Aber wenn man einen jungen Menschen mit so wichtigen Fragen alleine lässt, wie es die Menschen in Lucas' Umgebung getan haben, muss er sich seine Antworten selbst suchen. Und wenn er dann die falschen Antworten bekommt, kann er sich nur auf den falschen Weg begeben.

En opeens is het ongeval al achter de rug. Na het lezen van de eerste bladzijden al weet je dat ze in het ziekenhuis terecht komt, dat ze een voet verliest. Dan volgen de flashbacks. Natuurlijk zijn ze geen van allen overbodig, maar ik vond het niet zo vlot lezen juist omdat ik al wist wat eraan zat te komen. Ik kon me niet echt vinden in de beslissingen van het hoofdpersonage, al maar goed, want het blijkt voor hem niet zo goed uit te draaien.
Naar het einde toe, wanneer alles op zijn plaats begon te vallen, ging het lezen natuurlijk een pak vlotter. Ik was nieuwsgierig, de spanning was er, alles heel goed opgebouwd. Ergens vond ik het gewoon jammer dat de ernst van het accident al zo snel bekend was. Ik heb me minder mee laten slepen in Caitlins liefde voor dans, ik wist al op voorhand dat er iets tussen zou komen.
Al bij al toch wel de moeite waard. Mooi opgebouwd tot een climax, niet teveel tegelijk onthullen, en toch krijgt alles een plaats in het plot. Vooral technisch een heel sterk boek!
En opeens is het ongeval al achter de rug. Na het lezen van de eerste bladzijden al weet je dat ze in het ziekenhuis terecht komt, dat ze een voet verliest. Dan volgen de flashbacks. Gelezen voor het vak jeugdliteratuur van mijn opleiding. Volgens lezen voor de lijst is dit boek niveau 3 en voor leerlingen van 12-15 jaar. Ik vond dit boek met mijn 24 jaar, een vwo-diploma en een bijna afgeronde hbo-opleiding nog lastig om even in te komen. Het boek is op zich wel heel interessant maar mist wat diepgang op sommige plaatsen. Er wordt maar vrij weinig gepraat over waarom Lucas vindt wat hij vindt en zijn gedachtenprocessen worden amper omschreven.

Een traag, maar desalniettemin interessant verhaal over twee tieners, hun familiegeschiedenis en hun gedeelde zomer. Het boek speelt zich af op zo’n mooi omgeschreven plek, dat de vele pagina’s waarin schijnbaar niks gebeurt alsnog prettig zijn om te lezen terwijl je geduldig de antwoorden op al je vragen afwacht. De complexiteit van de karakters in contrast met de simpliciteit van het verhaal is wat me het meeste is bijgebleven van dit boek.

Jammer genoeg blijkt het thema zelfs in 2022 nog brandend actueel.

ik weet niet waarom ik dit boek achteloos voorbij liet gaan. Het is een goed boek. De schrijfster is niet voor niets een goed mens. De schriftuur van dit boek is uitzonderlijk voor een verhaal dat al bij al niet zo ingewikkeld is. De speling in het vehaal is knap in constructie gebracht. Lezen dit boek. Doen

I didn’t enjoy reading this book. The translation is clumsy and I didn’t feel warmth towards the main character or his mother. I always felt they were cardboard cutouts.
The storyline is bleak. The author’s intentions are sound, however.

Подростково-дидактическая книга, которую нужно читать сегодня, похоже, всем. Первая половина - это история как прошлое всегда возвращается, как его не прячь и не уходи от него, а вторая - как это прошлое может не просто вернуться, а стать настоящим, реальным, несмотря даже на весь ужас и кошмар пережитого. Не сказать, что увлекательное чтиво, скорее полезное и необходимое.
