Twelve-year-old Zoe Morgan has always felt out of place. With no friends, an overbearing mother, and a broken brain, it’s no wonder she’s a walking disaster. Trapped in a world dominated by backward letters that don’t make sense, she struggles through each day by clinging to the one thing she does understand: whales. On a life-changing trip to Australia, Zoe comes face to face with her demons and learns that fitting in is sometimes a simple matter of letting go.
LETTING GO is the second installment of the JUST BREATHE Ephemera series, a companion collection of shorts that supplement Kendall Grey's JUST BREATHE urban fantasy romance trilogy.
Calm like an F-bomb*, Kendall writes books about fierce women rockers who have a hard time keeping their clothes on, gender-swapped Norse gods who don't understand modern idioms, and the occasional murderer. Her aliases include Kendall Day (FALLING FOR MR. SLATER), Seven Slade (COMING OUT), and K.G. Green (ASK THE BLOOD).
Kendall lives near Athens, Georgia with her dashing geek husband, a one-eyed dachshund that thinks she's a cat, and an incorrigible yet adorable mutt whose ice-blue eyes will steal your heart and hold it for ransom.
Letting Go by Kendall Grey is a short story from the Just Breathe Trilogy Letting Go touches on Zoe and her mother when she was 12. This was a fantastic short that really allows you to view deeper into Zoe’s history and some of the fundamentals of a turning point in her life. Letting Go was a magically written and emotionally driven piece of work. If you have not read Inhale or Exhale you are truly missing out. Not just on the depth of this story, but a beautiful world with an equally beautiful story. I feel so connected to this character. Maybe it is the magical pull she feels towards the whales. Maybe it is the way she feels different. I can SO empathize with her. I loved this quote -
“Sometimes growing up meant letting go of the crutches people clung to in order to make it from day to day. Things like doubt and lack of confidence and differences.
Zoe was not a normal kid. She would never be normal. But being different was okay. If it meant seeing the world from another perspective, maybe she should accept that as the best angle for her and move on.
Letting Go is probably one of the best short stories I have ever read in my life, and this is in no way an exaggeration. It brought such a deeper understanding to a character in a way I have never seen written before. You don’t want to miss this trilogy. *I personally purchased this book and received NO compensation for this review
Letting Go is another beautiful Ephemera short story from Kendall Grey. I love that she is using the Ephemera stories to go back into Inhale and give the reader more insight into her characters and their back story.
Letting Go travels twenty(ish)years back in time. Zoe is struggling to survive under her mother's frigid rule. I always knew Zoe had a difficult upbringing, but I never understand just how unhappy she was as a child. Letting Go helped me to understand why Zoe works so hard as an adult; all that she had to overcome. And it gives a bit of insight as to why Zoe is so hesitant to accept Gavin's (future)affections. Oh, and the whales. We all know that Zoe's world revolves around her plight to protect these magnificent creatures. That is beautifully touched upon at the end of this story. Tears. It gave me lots of happy tears.
Letting Go also happens to be the story of the falcon. If you've read the series, you know exactly what I'm referring to. The falcon, and it's tie between Gavin and Zoe is one of my favorite themes in the Just Breathe series. The story and the magic Grey weaves in Letting Go simply took my breath away.
I didn't know how I was to last until November, which Just Breathe releases. So I am very, very grateful to author Kendall Grey for creating these stories. I fall further in love with Just Breathe world, the characters, and her writing with each one.
I received this story as a special treat from its author. I've read both Inhale and Exhale, the books this story relates to, and loved them dearly. To read Letting Go and see the story of Zoe and Gavin's beginnings was amazing! In this uncharacteristically sweet novella, Zoe Morgan, a gangly, braces-wearing 12 year old girl, meets an old Aboriginal man while on holiday in Australia with Mother. He gives her a beautiful wooden falcon. She in turn gives it to a little dark haired boy. From reading the novels, I was already familiar with this story as a memory. I loved to read it now! I felt Zoe's pain as her mother belittled her in many ways and understood even better, Zoe's struggles with growing up. The magic involved in the story, connecting Zoe, Gavin and the whales, was uplifting and, well, magical.
If you haven't tried anything from Kendall Grey, this novella is a great place to start!

What a beautiful companion short story! Letting Go is the story of a memory mentioned in Inhale. It gives us insight into Zoe's life when she was young. It's that moment that has to do with the carved bird. If you've read Inhale, then you'll want to read about that moment in Zoe's past, and this is it! We also get to see how Zoe struggled to work through her insecurities, the type of relationship she had with her mother, and finally, that defining moment in a young child's mind when she realizes what she is destined to do in her life.
If you haven't read any of Kendall Grey's stories, you should! Her storytelling is simply amazing! She really is an author to take a chance on. Each story in the Ephemera series is like a special treat for her readers. They are short, satisfying, and truly addicting!
This was amazing! Letting Go takes us back to Zoe's childhood where we learn about her love for whales, the reason behind her insecurities in life and the connection between her, Gavin and Yileen :) The whole ephemera is entirely spiritual and tear-jerking! Totally Loved it and I cant wait for Just Breathe to come out :D
Letting Go gives 'Just Breathe' series fans a look into Zoe's childhood. This short story gives fans first row seats to the very first encounter between Zoe and Gavin when she was 12 and he was 4. We get to learn more about the dynamic between Zoe and her mom, Candace, and see the experience that solidified her love of whales - the moment she knew her life's purpose. It was short, but poignant and does a wonderful job of filling in some of the blanks between Zoe and Gavin.
I love this series and was so excited to see a short about Zoe as a child. "This bird is your destiny.". LOVE it!!!!! Not only do we get to see the story of the carved bird, but we also get to see more of the relationship she has with her mother and the first magical time she meets a whale. This is a wonderful addition to an amazing series!
"Tell me I'm somebody, she mentally begged. That I'm worthy. And not stupid."
Letting Go is about twelve-year-old Zoe Morgan who struggles daily with being different. It doesn't help Zoe at all that her mother views different as a disability and deems it unacceptable.
On a trip to Australia to see the whales, something that totally fascinates Zoe, a man approaches her on the street, offering her a wooden falcon, which will change everything...
Zoe meets a child in a restaurant, and she is amazed that "magical" lines reach out from the bird connecting her to the child. Even though Zoe wants more than anything to keep this magical bird to herself, she hands it off to the child, knowing he needs it more than she does.
When she finally gets to see the whales, she has the same connection to them as she did to the child in the restaurant. A connection that will define her future.
"Zoe was not a normal kid. She would never be normal. But being different was okay. If it meant seeing the world from another perspective, maybe she should accept that as the best angle for her and move on."
Letting Go was an awesome short story filled with plenty of emotion and magic. I loved Zoe and really connected with her immediately. I can't wait to read Inhale, which is already downloaded into my Kindle. If you're looking for a short emotionally-driven story with a perfect touch of magic, I totally recommend you pick up Letting Go by Kendall Grey!
This was a sweet read. We get to really see what makes Zoe tick. I love Zoe. I do. I love her even when she flip flops back and forth as she over thinks things instead of just trusting things will work out. I love her always.
Zoe has had it rough but has been able to shelf a lifetime of put downs to achieve success in her life. What Letting Go does is that it allows you to better understand that she needs to heal and why it might take a lifetime to achieve it. You also get a better understanding as to why she’s so confident when it comes to anything whales and why she’s not with everything else.
I love this girl and her mom not so much.
As a treat you get to see how Zoe meets both Yileen and Gavin. It is amazing to see how they are all intertwined through a little toy falcon.
This story shows how paths can cross before we meet maybe we are destined to meet a friend, an enemy, or our soul mate. You just never know. I really liked this story. For one thing, it was wildly different from Stifle, but it still showed this important history of Zoe. It was really quite inspiring, actually. You think it can’t get much worse, but with the flap of a butterfly’s wings your entire future is set in motion.
This story, and Zoe’s encounter with the whale is quite moving and amazing. I mean, first I’ve read Inhale and I was completely in awe. Then I learned more about Kendall, I watched her video on youtube. I felt the love she has for these massive beings, and to see it take root right here in Zoe’s life well, its something beautiful to see
I cant believe how badly Zoe's mother treated her for things that werent her fault. Zoe's mother thinks that her daughter is an embarrassment because she is dyslexic, has a social disorder, and suffers from panic attacks. But I know that she grows up to be a cetacean biologist. None of Zoe's problems are things that would effect her intelligence, so I hate how her mother makes her feel stupid, but I am so glad to know that she one day succeeds anyway.
I hated the mother!!! I wanted to strangle her!!! But Zoe was so sweet and I loved that she finally learned being different is ok. I hate that it took so long but she eventually figured it out!!
This made me teary-eyed! I truly loved the Kendall decided to share with us the story of young Zoe and Gavin and their special encounter, years before they knew the importance of it.
You finally find out the Mother - daughter relationship behind the comments from the two books. It gives a clear light on why Zoe feels the way she does about herself sometimes.
