Munshi Premchand (Hindi: मुंशी प्रेमचंद) was an Indian writer famous for his modern Hindustani literature. He is one of the most celebrated writers of the Indian subcontinent, and is regarded as one of the foremost Hindustani writers of the early twentieth century.

Born Dhanpat Rai, he began writing under the pen name "Nawab Rai", but subsequently switched to "Premchand", while he is also known as "Munshi Premchand", Munshi being an honorary prefix. A novel writer, story writer and dramatist, he has been referred to as the "Upanyas Samrat" ("Emperor among Novelists") by some Hindi writers. His works include more than a dozen novels, around 250 short stories, several essays and translations of a number of foreign literary works into Hindi.

Premchand is considered the first Hindi author whose writings prominently featured realism. His novels describe the problems of the poor and the urban middle-class. His works depict a rationalistic outlook, which views religious values as something that allows the powerful hypocrites to exploit the weak. He used literature for the purpose of arousing public awareness about national and social issues and often wrote about topics related to corruption, child widowhood, prostitution, feudal system, poverty, colonialism and on the India's freedom movement.

Several of his early works, such as A Little Trick and A Moral Victory, satirised the Indians who cooperated with the British colonial government.

In the 1920s, he was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation movement and the accompanying struggle for social reform. During this period, his works dealt with the social issues such as poverty, zamindari exploitation (Premashram, 1922), dowry system (Nirmala, 1925), educational reform and political oppression (Karmabhumi, 1931).

In his last days, he focused on village life as a stage for complex drama, as seen in his most famous work Godan as well as the short-story collection Kafan (1936).Premchand believed that social realism was the way for Hindi literature, as opposed to the "feminine quality", tenderness and emotion of the contemporary Bengali literature.

A heart-warming short story by the best of hindi literary authors, Munshi Premchand. Fell in love with his novel, Nirmala during college and now reading his books after all these years is pure nostalgia. What's astonishing is that these gems were written a century ago but they still ring a bell in our society today. Guess this is what is meant to be a timeless classic!

Premchandji's novels and stories are always based on day to day life problems, and also it throws light on some social and political norms.
This story deals with fight between elder brothers' wife and younger brother. I won't give you a spoiler so what happens at end if you need to find out , then read the book.

The classic short story by Munshi Premchand captures the complex nature of family relationships, the value of dignity, and the resilience of a woman's spirit in the face of hardship. The plot, set in a traditional Indian home, centers on Anandi, a well-behaved and sophisticated daughter from a wealthy family who marries into a respectable but less wealthy household. Even amid family disputes and miscommunications, Anandi's constant grace and kindness are what make this narrative so captivating. The crucial moment occurs when she uses her intelligence and composure to settle a developing argument between her husband and his younger brother, embodying the phrase "Bade ghar ki beti aisi hee hoti hai."
Even though Bade Ghar Ki Beti is brief, it is emotionally and meaningfully rich. Its major takeaway, that harmony and devotion to one's principles are the keys to great power, is still as pertinent now as it was when Premchand wrote it. Anyone who enjoys subtle storytelling and thought-provoking subjects should read this novella because of its eternal appeal.

3 stars means average for me
Hi I am from ISCE board I scored 100 marks in Hindi (just telling not flexing!)
I read this short story in school. I have to say I am not much satisfied with story and initially hated it. Why is it women who have to compromise. Aanadi had to leave her home and fit in as a housewife(house wife used to work like maids for joint family back then) She never complained about her husband being poor or her being burdened with over work. I feel she didn't get the respect she deserved. Her father in law said it was not worth leaving home for your wife. Excuse me Lal Bihari hit him with a wooden slipper her finger bleed. I really support her husband's argument for cutting off ties with family.
But I guess things were very different back Premchand's time so thinking that way the story is fine.

Short and sweet

About a conflict between a wife and younger brother. Husband takes wife's side (as she was reasonable) and asks to part ways from bother. Brother loves elder brother a lot, so realizes he has done a blunder. Wife forgives the younger brother. Brothers united!!
I have read better from Premchand.

It's a short story written by premchand ji in his early writing era where he emphasizes more on sacrifices done by his female characters and a sudden change in heart by deep realization which is exact opposite to his later writings. It's a good story to read to study how premchand ji's writing style evolved.
