حين صدرت «التوأمتان» سنة 1993، كان قد مر على نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية ما يقارب خمسة عقود، وكانت أوروبا ما تزال تعيش بشكل أو بآخر صدمة تلك الحرب وما نتج عنها، في ظل إجماع على تحميل ألمانيا وشعبها الثقل الأخلاقي، والمسؤولية عن مآلات هذه الحرب. وقد لبست ألمانيا هذا الدور، خاصة أنها كانت الجهة المهزومة، في الوقت الذي صاغت فيه بقية الدول الأوروبية روايتها، التي ظهرت فيها بريئة من هذه الكارثة براءة الذئب من دم يوسف.
وقد تكون هذه الصيغة المتفق عليها، شكلًا فريدًا في التاريخ، الذي لطالما رُويت فيه الحروب من وجهتي نظر على الأقل. في مثل هذا الجو من الإجماع الأخلاقي والتاريخي، أتت رواية «التوأمتان»، مثل حجر رمي في مياه السردية الأوروبية؛ حيث أفسحت تيسا د لو في روايتها مساحة لتصوير الظروف التي صعدت فيها النازية وتصدرَ فيها هتلر المشهد السياسي الألماني، وآثار تلك الحقبة والحرب على المجتمع الألماني. لقد روت تيسا د لو حكايتها بحس أخلاقي عال، وبنظرة نقدية ابتعدت عن أية محاباة، وتجرأت على الثوابت: أن ترى عدوك من زاوية أخرى، غير الزاوية التي سعت كل القنوات إلى فرضها على من يريد أن ينظر إلى الماضي.

Let me simply start off by saying that this is not the only time I will read this book. If I live long enough, this is one of the books I will be reading for a second time. Also, this is not the only book I shall read by this author. After I finish this review, I will order more of her books.
I have read many novels about the first and second World Wars, and I have not figured out exactly where I will place this one on that list, but it will be very high up... In that rarefied category with DOS Passos', "Three Soldiers," "All Quiet on the Western Front," "The Naked and the Dead," "A Farewell to Arms," and "The Book Thief."
"The Twins," by Tessa De Loo is told in the third person narrative. It is two separate stories, told by twin sisters... Anna and Lotte... Who are separated at about six years old after their father passes away. Lotte is taken in by relatives that live in Holland, and Anna is taken in by relatives living in Germany. Between the time they are separated, and then meet as old ladies at a spa where the water supposedly has rejuvenated effects, they have only seen each other twice.
It is during their treatments at the spa, that they tell their harrowing but different experiences during World War 2. Anna, a volunteer nurse and Red Cross worker, tells her story through the eyes of a German woman trying to survive, and still support her country and its wounded soldiers. In one horrific scene, she walks into a room of a hospital that has been sealed off and on the floor soldiers are rolling around like beach balls with no limbs.
Lotte spends her time during the war sheltering Jewish families and friends from the SS. She looks upon the German people, even though she herself is German, as though they deserved everything that happened to them. Anna's stories about the devastation of Germany has little effect on her, at least not to the very end.
They both have very tragic stories... Personal stories about loved ones that were killed on the battlefield and gassed to death in the Camps. There are many characters, all that are wonderfully developed. The writing is sublime, and there are passages in this book that remind me of Joseph Conrad and that is the highest praise I could ever bestow on a writer.
This is not a book for the faint of heart. There were times I had to put it down because of the horrific inhumanity being described. Lotte and Anna's experiences during the war are different, but the one thing they share, in my opinion, is their humanity. When giving a chance to help, they reach out and do just that, despite the deadly consequences. According to Dante, doing nothing when you could help gets you a spot right next to Lucifer in hell, whereas helping when it is the most difficult gets you a spot in Paradise.
I want to thank my friend Hans for this wonderful gift. It is a piece of literature I will cherish.

Separated twins are an extremely fascinating research object for scientists because they are ideal to illustrate the "nature versus nurture" debate: what is the deciding factor in a lifetime?, the genes you inherited, or the education you got? According to the first view separated twins would live more or less the same lifes; whilst the second school insists the different contexts (cultures) lead to very different lives.
Judging from this book Tessa De Loo seems rather to adhere to the second school: Lotte and Anna, separated when they were 6 years old, definitively lived very different lives, until they found each other again, 70 years later in the Belgian health resort of Spa. Especially the war turns out to have driven a wedge between them. De Loo extensively recounts how Anna, who stayed behind in Germany, underwent the Nazi regime, married a soldier who eventually became an SS-man, and after the war endured the harsh years of the reconstruction. Lotte was raised by a family member in the Netherlands, saved Jews from the hands of Nazis and developed an outright hatred for all things German.
Fascinating, of course. But I don't think that De Loo intentionally focussed on an experiment around separated twins. That is my impression since especially Anna can tell her story in full and articulate how ordinary Germans came to rally around Adolf Hitler, how they just tried to live their own lives and overcome the war events and finally also trying to make the best of their lives after the disastrous defeat. To my knowledge De Loo is the first author to give such explicit attention to the German "suffering", long before the wave of scientific studies on the impact of the Allied bombings of German cities.
You can feel free to call this a justifiable correction of the unilateral and simplistic story of the justified fight against absolute evil. But in my opinion De Loo falls short the other way round: Anna and especially her (SS-)husband Martin are pictured as truly "good" Germans, who are just trying to do well, saints almost, and that is just as simplistic and romanticizing. In that sense, the novel is a bit disappointing. But all in all, an interesting and readable story. (2.5 stars)

A brilliantly-conceived plot. Lotte and Anna were born twins, in 1916, to German parents. Soon after, their mother dies, then their father. They were orphans at three. Relatives have to raise them. For some reasons, Anna remained in Germany with her grandfather's family; Lotte was brought up in the Netherlands with her uncle. World war two came upon them when they were young adults, one was German whose young husband, a German soldier, was killed in the war; the other was Dutch, who had sheltered Jews, and with the love of her life killed in a Nazi concentration camp. Seventy years later, the twins meet in a spa, both trying to get some relief from their age-induced ailments. Both are past 80 years old. They talk. Mostly of the past. Mostly about the war.
The enjoyment I had while reading this was modest. I've been the company of a German Nazi officer who was everywhere during the second world war in Jonathan Littell's "The Kindly Ones" and this concept of good Germans during the second world war is therefore no longer novel to me. I can't help but notice this, however: literature now abounds with those trying to picture the traditional "bad guys" during the last world war in a more sympathetic light (they're doing this not only for the Germans but also for the Japanese and the Italians). First they get their materials from the civilians of the wrong countries and here there can possibly be no serious debate: innocence is everywhere and I do not believe in ascribing a collective guilt upon whole nations. Then they ease up to the common soldiers, and minor functionaries of the war machine, i.e., those who were simply there at the wrong place and at the wrong time, and who tried their best to act as human beings in the midst of atrocities. But after this, what? Is it possible that the time will come, a very long time, that even the likes of Hitler would be completely rehabilitated, like they were just some benign, tragic, misguided, well-meaning geniuses which history had long misunderstood?

There are aspects of this book that were quite wonderful. I found the plot well-conceived, intriguing and complex. The idea of looking at a good person who happens to be a German is an important one because it is easy to think in hindsight that all Germans were bad people. In fact, we often think that all Germans were evil. It is a simplistic idea and this book gave us a reason to think more deeply. How do good people allow an evil man to reign over them? What do we learn from it?
Anna and Lotte were twins who were orphaned and separated. One stayed in Germany and the other was raised in the Netherlands. WW2 ensued and the first was a woman married to, and widowed by, a German soldier. The other was a woman who sheltered Jews and lost the love of her life in a German concentration camp. They finally meet again -- by accident -- while each is visiting a spa at 80 years old.
It was a rich and wonderful premise for a book, and I could have loved this book but it was missing the emotional connection that I needed. While I enjoyed the conversations between Anna and Lotte, and the great exploration of their history, I wanted more of the personal conversations that I think we all would have in this situation. Where were their questions about family, personal loves, the things they did during the almost 80 years since they had seen one another last? Where were the quiet tears and angry curses over their lost moments? Where were the deeply emotional conversations that tried to catch up with one another's lives.

This is the most poorly written book I have ever read about WWII. Many times, I wanted to stop reading and just put the book down but I persevered. I blame it on the poor translation as it was translated from Dutch to English. It is extremely stilted and it could have been 100 pages shorter.

Heeeeel mooi en interessant boek over twee duitse zusjes die werden gescheiden van elkaar. Eentje groeit op in Nederland en de andere in Duitsland, tijdens WO2.

“Trên th� giới tồn tại nhiều nền văn hoá, nhiều s� xung đột v� tôn giáo,... Chiến tranh là điều không th� tránh khỏi. Không phải bây gi� nhưng có l� s� xảy ra trong tương lai.� - Thầy trên Hola đã m� đầu bài giảng cho chúng mình như vậy. Chiến tranh, quân đội làm mình nh� đến cuốn sách Còn ch� còn em, và mình biết mình đã đúng khi chọn cuốn sách này làm một trong bốn người bạn đồng hành trong khu quân s� Hoà Lạc.
Xuất phát điểm t� thành ph� Cologne, bi kịch gia đình b� m� mất sớm khiến Anna và Lotte - cặp ch� em song sinh người Aryan (Đức) b� chia r�. Người ch� Anna � lại Đức với h� hàng bên nội, còn cô em gái Lotte được đưa sang Hà Lan đ� chữa bệnh. Chiến tranh đã thay đổi mọi th�, hai ch� em song sinh tưởng chừng như nửa sinh mệnh của nhau đã tách rời, đ� rồi mỗi người một phương, một câu chuyện, một suy nghĩ, nhận thức khác nhau.
Nếu nói Anna may mắn hơn Lotte vì bà được � lại chính quê hương của mình, làm v� một sĩ quan người Đức - một trong s� những nguyên nhân gây ra đau kh� cho đất nước mà Lotte sống - thì không hẳn vậy. Anna tuy � lại quê hương, nhưng không được sống trong nhung lụa. Cuộc sống của bà như trâu như ngựa. Ánh sáng le lói duy nhất của cuộc đời bà thời thiếu n� là giá sách nơi gia đình nhà bà von Garlitz, và Martin - anh lính mà bà đã đem lòng yêu mến và ch� đợi mòn mỏi nơi hậu phương.

Mình đã nghĩ rằng mình s� thích câu chuyện v� Anna hơn. Tuổi thơ cơ cực, b� đàn áp bởi v� chồng người chú, khi đi làm hầu gái trong lâu đài của gia đình nhà bà von Garlitz đến khi gặp Martin - chàng lính Đức lịch thiệp chán ghét cuộc chiến tranh đang diễn ra, khi nàng vừa sống trong hạnh phúc, vừa lo s� niềm hạnh phúc của mình b� chiến tranh cướp đi mất. Nhưng, câu chuyện của Lotte cũng không kém cạnh. Nàng ban đầu không th� chấp nhận ch� vì suy nghĩ rằng nơi mình lớn lên đã phải chịu đựng quá nhiều do chiến tranh của tên ho� s� hết thời, t� ch� đ� độc tài, chịu đựng s� đàn áp trên chính nơi mình sống bởi dân tộc thượng đẳng. Nàng sống trong một gia đình tưởng chừng hạnh phúc, thực chất là một s� hạnh phúc gi� tạo. Nàng đánh mất mối tình đầu, anh chàng người Do Thái của mình do vô tình đ� anh lọt vào tay lính Đức. Mang trong mình mặc cảm tội lỗi nên nàng đã cùng gia đình b� m� nuôi giúp nhiều người Do Thái khác, che dấu h� khỏi cuộc truy lùng của bọn lính Đức. C� hai câu chuyện của hai ch� em đều có sức thu hút mình, khiến mình không th� ngừng việc đọc.
Khoảnh khắc Anna chia tay người chồng làm lính của nàng mà mình cũng cảm thấy buồn thay. Rồi những biến c� sau đó xảy ra dồn dập. Chiến tranh đến rồi đi, đ� lại những hậu qu� không gì có th� bù đắp lại được. Lotte không th� tha th� cho người ch� song sinh của mình, giống như người Do Thái, những tù binh người Nga, lính Đồng minh,... không th� tha th� cho phát xít Đức vì những gì chúng đã gây ra cho đất nước, dân tộc, cho b� m�, v�, con hay chính bản thân h�. Ngược lại, vì hậu qu� của chiến tranh, những lính Đức, gi� đây tr� thành những tù binh, và h� b� tr� thù, theo cái cách mà h� đã gây ra dù muốn hay không muốn.
Mình không chắc mình đ� hiểu biết đ� review chi tiết nhất những giai đoạn, s� kiện diễn ra trong cuốn sách, nhưng Còn ch� còn em là một trong những tác phẩm đáng đ� đọc nhất mà mọi người không nên b� qua.
Xuất phát điểm t� thành ph� Cologne, bi kịch gia đình b� m� mất sớm khiến Anna và Lotte - cặp ch� em song sinh người Aryan (Đức) b� chia r�. Người ch� Anna � lại Đức với h� hàng bên nội, còn cô em gái Lotte được đưa sang Hà Lan đ� chữa bệnh. Chiến tranh đã thay đổi mọi th�, hai ch� em song sinh tưởng chừng như nửa sinh mệnh của nhau đã tách rời, đ� rồi mỗi người một phương, một câu chuyện, một suy nghĩ, nhận thức khác nhau.
Nếu nói Anna may mắn hơn Lotte vì bà được � lại chính quê hương của mình, làm v� một sĩ quan người Đức - một trong s� những nguyên nhân gây ra đau kh� cho đất nước mà Lotte sống - thì không hẳn vậy. Anna tuy � lại quê hương, nhưng không được sống trong nhung lụa. Cuộc sống của bà như trâu như ngựa. Ánh sáng le lói duy nhất của cuộc đời bà thời thiếu n� là giá sách nơi gia đình nhà bà von Garlitz, và Martin - anh lính mà bà đã đem lòng yêu mến và ch� đợi mòn mỏi nơi hậu phương.
Nếu nói Lotte may mắn hơn Anna vì nh� có căn bệnh phổi, bà mới được sống cuộc sống như người bình thường, được theo đuổi niềm đam mê âm nhạc, thì không hẳn vậy. Lotte suýt mất mạng khi còn bé, Lotte cùng với gia đình b� m� nuôi của mình đã che dấu biết bao người Do Thái, Lotte căm hờn quốc gia cha sinh m� đ� của mình. Lotte căm thù Đức Quốc xã đến nỗi tận cuối cùng, khi những câu chuyện của Anna dần được k� hết, vẫn chưa chịu tha th� cho người ch� song sinh của mình.
Mình đã nghĩ rằng mình s� thích câu chuyện v� Anna hơn. Tuổi thơ cơ cực, b� đàn áp bởi v� chồng người chú, khi đi làm hầu gái trong lâu đài của gia đình nhà bà von Garlitz đến khi gặp Martin - chàng lính Đức lịch thiệp chán ghét cuộc chiến tranh đang diễn ra, khi nàng vừa sống trong hạnh phúc, vừa lo s� niềm hạnh phúc của mình b� chiến tranh cướp đi mất. Nhưng, câu chuyện của Lotte cũng không kém cạnh. Nàng ban đầu không th� chấp nhận ch� vì suy nghĩ rằng nơi mình lớn lên đã phải chịu đựng quá nhiều do chiến tranh của tên ho� s� hết thời, t� ch� đ� độc tài, chịu đựng s� đàn áp trên chính nơi mình sống bởi dân tộc thượng đẳng. Nàng sống trong một gia đình tưởng chừng hạnh phúc, thực chất là một s� hạnh phúc gi� tạo. Nàng đánh mất mối tình đầu, anh chàng người Do Thái của mình do vô tình đ� anh lọt vào tay lính Đức. Mang trong mình mặc cảm tội lỗi nên nàng đã cùng gia đình b� m� nuôi giúp nhiều người Do Thái khác, che dấu h� khỏi cuộc truy lùng của bọn lính Đức. C� hai câu chuyện của hai ch� em đều có sức thu hút mình, khiến mình không th� ngừng việc đọc.
Khoảnh khắc Anna chia tay người chồng làm lính của nàng mà mình cũng cảm thấy buồn thay. Rồi những biến c� sau đó xảy ra dồn dập. Chiến tranh đến rồi đi, đ� lại những hậu qu� không gì có th� bù đắp lại được. Lotte không th� tha th� cho người ch� song sinh của mình, giống như người Do Thái, những tù binh người Nga, lính Đồng minh,... không th� tha th� cho phát xít Đức vì những gì chúng đã gây ra cho đất nước, dân tộc, cho b� m�, v�, con hay chính bản thân h�. Ngược lại, vì hậu qu� của chiến tranh, những lính Đức, gi� đây tr� thành những tù binh, và h� b� tr� thù, theo cái cách mà h� đã gây ra dù muốn hay không muốn.

It has been a few years since I read a Dutch novel, mostly because the Dutch literature that I grew up with, the "modern" literature anyway, was invariably dour and repressed, or intentionally vulgar and shallow (with the occasionaly mix of both). Yes, there have been exceptions but those have been too few and too far between.
This novel, however, is very much one of the exceptions. On the surface, it deals with the story of two twin sisters that are orphaned, get separated, with one remaining in Germany and the other being moved to distant relatives in the Netherlands. Due to political differences between the foster families, the sisters lose touch, until they bump into each other at Spa in Belgium when they are old ladies.
The story develops as the two sisters tell their stories, inevitably focussing on their lives shortly before and during World War 2. These stories don't just show how different the two protagonists are, but more importantly at a deeper level the stories reflect the different attitudes of "the Germans" and "the Dutch" vis-a-vis each other. Even today, Dutch people are raised on histories of that period of time that speaks in terms of them and us, the Bad Germans vs the Good Dutch, and this novel shows there is a lot more to this.
This novel is not just for Dutchmen living in Germany; it's for everybody that wants to read a story about how real people dealt with those unreal times, and may help provide a little insight into how inter-personal relations should never be pre-judged by historical generalities. (Available in English and German too).

Na lange twijfel toch vier sterren voor dit boek, omdat het een interessante blik werpt op hoe het Duitse "gewone volk" de oorlog meegemaakt heeft. En omdat het duidelijk maakt hoe absurd het is de schuldvraag toe te kennen aan een volledig volk, hoe gemakkelijk dat ook lijkt te zijn.
Om die reden ergerde ik me wat aan het personage Lotte, opgegroeid in Nederland, die zelfs geconfronteerd met haar zus die ze vroeger zo gemist heeft, zich daar niet over kan zetten. Mij lijkt het, ik geef toe vanuit mijn huidige luxepositie, vrij ongeloofwaardig.
Het verhaal van de twee tweelingszussen die gescheiden (één in Duitsland, één in Nederland) opgroeien, elk een andere kant van de Tweede Wereldoorlog meemaken en elkaar op bejaarde leeftijd terugvinden in een wellnessgedoe te Spa, blijkt uiteindelijk niet meer dan een raamverhaal te zijn om hun twee oorlogsverhalen te vertellen. Dat voelde voor mij als een gemiste kans om meer in te gaan op de emotionele band tussen hen twee, wat het doet om je zus na zo een lange tijd terug te zien. Kortom: interessant uitgangspunt, helaas te weinig uitgewerkt. Maar dat maakt de oorlogsgeschiedenissen niet minder interessant, en niet minder aangrijpend.

Buồn, buồn ơi là buồn, buồn nẫu hết c� ruột.Nhưng mà mình không khóc, ch� th� dài t� đầu đến cuối sách thôi.Chất lịch s� rất nhiều, thấm đẫm vào từng con ch�.Từng s� kiện, từng đợt phản công cho đến cái nhìn t� c� hai phe, tất c� tạo nên một bức tranh sáng tối trầm mặc, đối nghịch nhau.Mình ưng Anna, không thích Lotte.Và phải dành tặng cho dịch gi� một lời khen to b� vì đã quá cẩn thận, quá toàn tâm toàn ý trong việc chú thích đầy đ� và rõ ràng, chi tiết.Dịch mượt và hấp dẫn, toát ra được cái thần của tác phẩm.

In de maand april is de leeschallenge van bol.com om een klassieker te lezen. Hoewel dit boek nog niet zo oud is (het is uitgekomen in mijn geboortejaar, dus ik heb er belang bij om 30 jaar niet oud te noemen ;)), is het ontzettend bekend en zijn er o.a. een film en muziektheatervoorstelling op gebaseerd. Wat mij betreft verdient het daarmee de status van klassieker.
De muziektheatervoorstelling heb ik in 2015 gezien in het Delamar in Amsterdam. Dat maakte toen diepe indruk op me en sindsdien staat het boek op mijn 'want to read', dus nu moest het er maar eens van komen! Om gelijk de vergelijking tussen het boek en de voorstelling aan te halen: er zijn nogal wat verschillen. Deze komen voort uit een verschil in keuze van het uitgangspunt. Waar het boek 2 vrouwen van in de 70 beschrijft die terugkijken op hun leven, was de voorstelling gericht op de eerste 20/30 jaar van het leven van Anna en Lotte en de liefdesgeschiedenis van beide vrouwen in de oorlog. De vraag: kies ik voor mijn kijk op het verleden en met name de oorlog of voor de band met mijn zus? blijft overeind, maar in de voorstelling wordt hen deze keus net na de oorlog al voorgelegd. In het begin moest ik daarom wennen aan de verhaallijn van het boek. Dat had niet zo zeer met het boek te maken, als wel met een teleurstelling dat de voorstelling die ik gezien had minder een bewerking van het boek was als wel geïnspireerd op. Ik dacht te weten wat ik ging lezen en dat was niet zo.
Ook moest ik even wennen aan de schrijfstijl. Het op latere leeftijd terugkijken op het leven en vertellen aan de andere zus gaf een soort afstand, waardoor de gebeurtenissen me minder raakten. Iets wat de zussen ook (lijken te) ervaren tijdens het vertellen; ze proberen de verhalen op afstand te houden, een soort professionele afstand te bewaren in plaats van zichzelf te verliezen in alles wat hen is overkomen.
Ik had vaak het gevoel dat ik bij Anna en Lotte aan tafel zat daar in Spa. En ook bij mij was het nodig om meer te horen over het perspectief van de anderen. Verhalen als dat van Lotte hoor je hier als je op school leert over de Tweede Wereldoorlog of Nederlandse romans over die tijd leest. Verhalen als dat van Anna echter niet. Hoewel ik begrijp dat Lotte zich niet sympathiek kon opstellen naar Anna en haar verhaal (het gevoel van verraad als ze sympathiseerde met een Duitser nog te groot), vond ik het wel heel zinnig om te lezen hoe Hitler in Duitsland zo groot kon worden, met name in de begindagen van zijn politieke carrière en hoe zelfs voor iemand die er niets mee had en niets met Hitler had de hersenspoelende propaganda zo groot was dat 'wir haben es nicht gewusst' toch echt deels van toepassing was. Schrikbarend belangrijk voor iedereen om te lezen met in je hoofd het idee 'Hoe zou het kunnen gebeuren dat iemand waar ik zo tegen ben zo groot wordt in mijn eigen land', want ik vrees dat het ons allemaal kan overkomen.
Ook de vraag die Ernst Lotte voorlegt:Als Hitler nu aan kwam lopen, zou je hem dan doodschieten? is nog steeds actueel en relevant. Vervang de naam Hitler door een van de grote machthebbers die een oorlog aan hebben gesticht of hun volk kleineren en vanuit dictatuur overheersen en je hebt een vraag van nu. Voor Lotte was de tweestrijd: ik haat deze man, maar kan ik doden? Een erg belangrijke vraag over empathie en goed en kwaad. Eerder dacht ik weleens als we nou deze of deze machthebber met slechte intentie liquideren, is het dan niet gewoon klaar met de oorlog die vanuit de idealen van die machthebber gevoerd wordt? Na het verhaal van Anna denk ik: nee, zeker niet. Als de gepropageerde held vermoord wordt, zal zijn heldenstatus alleen maar groeien en zijn gedachtegoed geidealiseerd worden. Voorkomen dat een dergelijke machtspositie kan ontstaan en/of het volk helpen inzien wat er achter de propaganda bestaat, is denk ik toch de andere weg.
Ondanks dat het verhaal in dit boek veel groter is, dan het verhaal in de muziektheatervoorstelling, werd uiteindelijke wel dezelfde band het meest invoelbare deel van het verhaal voor mij: de band tussen zus en haar geliefde, dus het verhaal van Anna en Martin en van Lotte en Ernst (na zijn kamikazeactie).
Om een eind te maken aan mijn mijmeringen tot slot: het einde van het boek ging me uiteindelijk te snel. De auteur kiest een van de beste redenen om schellen van ogen te laten vallen en voorbij eigen opvattingen te kunnen kijken, maar de onomkeerbaarheid stelde me toch teleur.
O, toch nog een laatste opvallendheidje. Dit boek is helemaal nog niet zo oud (toch? Toch? ;)) en toch zie ik al duidelijke opvallendheden in het taalgebruik. Zo zijn er woorden die uit het dagelijks taalgebruik zijn verdwenen, zoals onoirbaar en ramsjen, maar ook valt me op dat er meer in Duits (en Frans) wordt geschreven zonder vertaling erbij. Er lijkt qua voorkennis een hoger taalniveau Duits/Frans verwacht te worden dan in de recent uitgekomen Nederlandse literatuur. Interessante ontwikkelingen!

Tessa de Loo voert een onwaarschijnlijk boeiend verhaal op over twee Keulse zussen die elkaar op oude leeftijd weer tegenkomen in een kuuroord en onwennig terugblikken op hun levens vanaf het moment dat ze na de dood van hun ouders op zesjarige leeftijd van elkaar werden gescheiden. Terwijl Anna terechtkomt in een katholiek plattelandsgezin dat haar gebruikt als gratis werkkracht, groeit Lotte als ‘Hollandse� op in een beter milieu in Amsterdam. Tegen de opkomst van de NSDAP in Duitsland en de Tweede Wereldoorlog blijkt de zusterband vrijwel niet opgewassen.
Helaas viel de uitvoering me bitter tegen. Dat heeft er in de eerste plaats mee te maken dat De Loo te veel toelicht. Nog ervan afgezien dat lezers de handelingen prima zelf kunnen interpreteren, blijft de hand van de schrijver hierdoor zichtbaar in de dialogen, die soms plichtmatig overkomen. Ook wekt de uitleg een kneuterige sfeer, vergelijkbaar met die van Carlos Ruiz Zafón in .
In de tweede plaats is De Loo niet wars van stereotypen en clichés, zeker niet waar het zus Lotte aangaat, die de pavlovreactie van veel Nederlanders op de Tweede Wereldoorlog belichaamt. Die reactie kan nuttig zijn om de geschiedvertelling aan de kaak te stellen, maar komt gekunsteld over. Dit is ook mijn derde bezwaar tegen het boek: De Loo neemt teveel hooi op haar vork. De zussen lijken elke wetenswaardigheid vóór, tijdens en na de oorlog te moeten benoemen of bespreken. Wat mij uiteindelijk interesseerde was de aandacht voor de betekenis van de opkomst van het nationaalsocialisme voor ‘gewone� mensen in zowel Duitsland (!) als Nederland. Overigens is in dat opzicht ook een aanrader.
In de vierde plaats bevat het boek veel banale of nikszeggende opmerkingen, die afbreuk doen aan de achterliggende vragen over afkomst en identiteit, goed en kwaad en nature versus nurture.
Ten slotte wil de schrijver soms met grote stappen snel thuis zijn, om dan onverwacht veel aandacht te schenken aan irrelevante passages. Belangrijke momenten als de ontmoeting van de zussen op bejaarde leeftijd en de relatie tussen Lotte en David blijven zo verstoken van diepgang.
Blijft over dat ik de in 2004 voor een Academy Award genomineerde door Ben Sombogaart indrukwekkender vond: het aangepaste scenario heeft mijn ergernis kunnen wegnemen.

If someone were to argue that style is inferior to story, I’d bring up De tweeling (translated as The twins) to beg to differ. The book contains a magnificent story about two sisters who meet at old age and look back on their separated lives, one growing up in poverty in Germany, marrying a Schutzstaffel soldier, the other growing in wealth in the Netherlands, falling in love with a Jewish man. The author’s style however pretty much ruined my reading experience. Key passages lack depth, whereas abundant passages get too much attention. The book is also full of clichés and stereotypes.

Ook wekt de uitleg een kneuterige sfeer, vergelijkbaar met die van Carlos Ruiz Zafón in .
In de tweede plaats is De Loo niet wars van stereotypen en clichés, zeker niet waar het zus Lotte aangaat, die de pavlovreactie van veel Nederlanders op de Tweede Wereldoorlog belichaamt. Die reactie kan nuttig zijn om de geschiedvertelling aan de kaak te stellen, maar komt gekunsteld over. Dit is ook mijn derde bezwaar tegen het boek: De Loo neemt teveel hooi op haar vork. De zussen lijken elke wetenswaardigheid vóór, tijdens en na de oorlog te moeten benoemen of bespreken. Wat mij uiteindelijk interesseerde was de aandacht voor de betekenis van de opkomst van het nationaalsocialisme voor ‘gewone� mensen in zowel Duitsland (!) als Nederland. Overigens is in dat opzicht ook een aanrader.
In de vierde plaats bevat het boek veel banale of nikszeggende opmerkingen, die afbreuk doen aan de achterliggende vragen over afkomst en identiteit, goed en kwaad en nature versus nurture.
Anna stond erop alles af te rekenen, Lotte wilde daar niets van weten. Maar Anna was haar voor. Ze had al betaald toen Lotte nog naar de verloren mouw van haar mantel zocht. De Duitsers waren iedereen te vlug af met hun harde marken.
Ten slotte wil de schrijver soms met grote stappen snel thuis zijn, om dan onverwacht veel aandacht te schenken aan irrelevante passages. Belangrijke momenten als de ontmoeting van de zussen op bejaarde leeftijd en de relatie tussen Lotte en David blijven zo verstoken van diepgang.
Blijft over dat ik de in 2004 voor een Academy Award genomineerde door Ben Sombogaart indrukwekkender vond: het aangepaste scenario heeft mijn ergernis kunnen wegnemen.

If someone were to argue that style is inferior to story, I’d bring up De tweeling (translated as The twins) to beg to differ. The book contains a magnificent story about two sisters who meet at old age and look back on their separated lives, one growing up in poverty in Germany, marrying a Schutzstaffel soldier, the other growing in wealth in the Netherlands, falling in love with a Jewish man. The author’s style however pretty much ruined my reading experience. Key passages lack depth, whereas abundant passages get too much attention. The book is also full of clichés and stereotypes.

READ IN DUTCH
Sommige boeken moet je gelezen hebben. En dan heb je ook nog een literatuurlijst die je moet vullen. Ik had de film al verschillende keren gezien (zowel thuis als op school) en daarom moest ik meteen aan dit boek denken. Bovendien had ik al veel positieve verhalen over De Tweeling van Tessa de Loo gelezen.
Twee vrouwen, die zussen blijken te zijn, ontmoeten zich voor het eerst in vijftig jaar weer in het Belgische kuuroord Spa. Toen ze klein waren zijn ze uitelkaar gehaald en Lotte kwam bij socialistische Nederlanders, Anna kwam terecht in een primitief boerendorpje. Dit allemaal aan het eind van de jaren 20 van de vorige eeuw. Zoals te verwachten valt, groeien zij totaal anders op, en beleven zij de tweede wereld oorlog helemaal anders. In Spa nu vertellen zij elkaar hun levensverhaal en de keuzes die zij maakten.
Het boek is inderdaad indrukwekkend, al waren er geen grote verrassingen, aangezien ik de film al gezien had. Het boek is beter dan de film in mijn ogen, al is het absoluut geen slechte verfilming. De schrijfstijl is mooi, alleen had het tempo van het verhaal voor mij af en toe iets hoger mogen liggen (waarschijnlijk omdat het meestal hoger ligt), maar dat was geen groot probleem verder. Het verhaal wordt goed uitgewerkt, en in mijn ogen is er genoeg ruimte voor het verhaal van de zussen. De verschillen worden goed neergelegd, en het is ook weer eens een kijkje in het leven van 'normale' Duitsers tijdens de WOII. Het klopt, dit zou een van die boeken moeten zijn die je gelezen moet hebben.

Ao longo das páginas vamos acompanhando as suas vidas, através de lembranças que estão a partilhar uma a outra. Grande parte dos seus relatos são passados durante a 2ª Guerra Mundial, e são capítulos interessantíssimos. Afinal de contas, Anna ficou a ser educada na Alemanha enquanto que Lotte foi para a Holanda, desta forma temos a visão da guerra de cada um dos lados, narrados sobre o ponto de vista de cada um das irmãs. Fácil como podemos julgar que o povo alemão não sofreu e que todos apoiavam os ideais de Hitler, no entanto este livro faz-nos ultrapassar esse preconceito.
Ainda uma mensagem importante que o livro nos transmite: "Um dia, será tarde demais!"

Yet another war novel, this book focusses on the fortunes of twins, Lotte and Anna, who are taken to live apart when their parents die. Reared from the age of 6 in separate countries, they follow quite different paths as the Second World War consumes Europe. Years later, when they are old women, they meet in a Belgian town, and attempt to dissect the stories that led them there.
The Twins is a fantastic piece of writing, a truly unique viewpoint of a conflict that has been covered many times in modern literature. It is wonderfully human, consistently moving and devastating in equal parts. It is highly readable throughout, and definitely to be recommended.

Graag gelezen, dit - vlot vertelde - verhaal over een tweeling, die na de dood van hun ouders gesplitst worden. De ene groeit op in Duitsland, de andere in Nederland, waardoor ze tijdens en na Wereldoorlog II aan andere zijden belandden, de ene in het slechte, de andere in het goede kamp. Wanneer ze elkaar op bejaarde leeftijd terug ontmoeten, zorgt dat voor interessante gesprekken, die de kloof tegelijk lijken te verbreden én dichten.

Coincidenta coincidentelor, 2 surori gemene din Germania nazista, despartite la varsta de 6 ani, crescute una in Germania, una in Olanda, se reintalnesc dupa multi multi ani in....Belgia la Spa. Este un amalgam de amintiri dureroase, se trece de la una la alta, de la trecut la prezent ametitor de repede. Totusi mi-au placut foarte mult personajele, puternice si frumoase.

The book is enjoyable and historically correct(in general). It is not great literature though...
It tells a nice story, with interesting characters and asks a few pertinent questions.
The story of twins who got seperated as young children and who meet at an older age gives an interesting starting point. One of the twins stayed in Germany and lived there during the war, finding herself at the losing side afterwards. The other twin was raised in the Netherlands and helped with hiding jews, still hating Germans.
The central elements in the novel are:
a)is a character formed by education or birth (nurture /nature debate). To answer this question twins are interesting study objects
b) what was the life of normal women like during WWII, both in Germany as in the Netherlands.
Attention is given to the suffering, also of the Germans.
What annoyed me was the superiority the Dutch twin sometimes let slip through, as she was on the good side. (as a personal remark: the way she describes the superiority of the dutch family is based on an underlying false premise as very few jews in the netherlands survived the war. )
c) Is there something like ‘collective guilt�?
It is a good read, esp. interesting for fans of historical fiction or for those who want to know more about WWII without tons of battles and blood.

Ik heb dit boek eerder gelezen als tiener. Ik heb dit keer naar het verhaal geluisterd via de LuisterBieb. Het begin kon ik me nog goed herinneren. Het einde niet en daardoor kwam dat toch wel als een schok. De rest van het verhaal is interessant. Al ergerde ik me er soms wel aan dat Anna de overhand had. Daardoor leer je Lotte minder goed kennen. Ook lijkt het daardoor soms op een wedstrijd. Wie heeft er het meeste meegemaakt. Toch is de opzet van het verhaal en de invalshoek interessant. Ook de Duitse bevolking had het zwaar tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, want zij werden er ook maar in meegesleept. Dat was niet voor iedereen een keuze. Daarom vind ik het boek een aanrader.

Wat een prachtige roman!
De structuur van de roman is helder: twee vrouwen, kurend in Spa, ontmoeten elkaar. Anna herkent in de ander haar tweelingzuster Lotte. Zij hebben elkaar zeer lang gezien noch gesproken. Daarom hebben hebben zij veel aan elkaar te vertellen. Zij komen afwisselend aan het woord en � tamelijk filmisch � gaan de uitlatingen in Spa over in de geschiedenisscene van toen.
De spanning tussen de twee oude dames, het ongemakkelijke gevoel dat mede voortkomt uit de gedachte van elk van beiden dat zij het zwaar heeft gehad zonder dat de zuster er voldoende begrip voor heeft getoond, ja onwillig is om te tonen, wordt knap volgehouden bij elke ‘terugschakeling� van de scene in het héden van de vertelde tijd. De geschiedenissen zelf zijn indringend, diep ingrijpend in hun persoonlijke leven, de sociale verbanden tussen familieleden en anderen met wie zij te maken krijgen. De Tweede Wereldoorlog zorgt voor tweespalt op verschillende fronten. Doorzettingsvermogen en verdringingseffecten komen met veel kleuring in allerlei gedaanten langs. Politieke en militaire omstandigheden zorgen voor veel leed, en het is werkelijk ‘kracht naar kruis�, moeilijkheden die door het tonen van een sterk karakter worden doorstaan.
Een van de vele schoonheden aan deze roman is het dubbele perspectief c.q. de wijze waarop de auteur dat uitwerkt. Enerzijds is er het verhaal van Anna, die in Duitsland blijft, die perioden kent van fysiek zwaar zwoegen met velerlei ontberingen, die als huidhoudster in dienst komt van een adelijk echtpaar, die trouwt met iemand die SS-officier wordt en aldus bijna van binnenuit naast veel rigiditeit ook positieve aspecten van het Hitler-regime ervaart. Anderzijds is het Lotte die in haar vroege jeugd bij verwanten in Nederland terechtkomt en in die sociale middenklasse relatief onbezorgd kan opgroeien; de onderdrukking die zij ondergaat tijdens WOII, zoals die wel vaker in de literatuur geboekstaafd is, is van een geheel andere orde dan wat zij van haar zuster’s situatie veronderstelt.
Tessa de Loo is er naar mijn mening zeer goed in geslaagd haar roman een qua structuur en inhoud evenwichtige opbouw te verlenen. Daardoor slaat de balans der sentimenten niet eenzijdig door. Dat is het geval, terwijl wel de emotiën regelmatig hoog oplopen, bijvoorbeeld omdat de sterke karakters pal staan elk voor hun zaak, en geen onrecht dulden, en dus tegenstand ontmoeten - oei, dat kraakt vaak.
Het boek geeft de indruk dat De Loo zich behoorlijk heeft gedocumenteerd. Daarom zorgen de geografische, sociale en andere achtergrondgegevens voor een realistisch geschilderd decor, ja ook decorum. Voorts heb ik in de gebezigde stijl en het woordgebruik elementen van subtiele humor herkend - die bevalt mij zeer. Zo af en toe een lichte toets temidden van donkerte en zwarigheden, dat maakt het boek des te aangenamer te verteren. De rijke afwisseling in plotspanning en de-escalaties zorgden er voor dat ik door het boek ben gevlogen (nu ja, in vier dagen, dat is voor mij behoorlijk up-tempo).
Het boek werkt uiteindelijk toe naar het samenkomen van de geschiedenissen van beide vrouwen naar: het heden van hun uitvoerige gesprekken in het kuuroord. Zo blijft het tot het eind de vraag of de zusters ook geestelijk met elkaar in het reine komen.
Denk echter niet dat het boek het moet hebben van het slotakkoord. Het is veeleer het continuüm van de behandeling van de centrale thematiek, waarvan alle vierhonderd vijfendertig pagina's doordesemd zijn, die de roman rijkdom, niveau, pracht en allure verstrekt. JM

Той, что, встретив постаревшую сестру, пытается достучаться до ее сердца, не просто поведать ей, как жилось юной девушке в нацистской Германии, но и вернуть ее расположение, теплое сестринское доверие и дружбу. Возможно ли это, спустя годы и разницу в положении, � не бывает ли по-настоящему поздно?
Я практически ничего не читаю о войне в последние годы, и, правда, не стала бы сравнивать “Близнецов� с Ремарком или другими военными драмами. Эта книга � о личном, о простых людях, жизнь которых пролетает как одно мгновение, независимо от того, грохочут ли вокруг войны, или течет мирное время.
Меня тронула книга и заинтересовала ее экранизация “Сестры � близнецы / De tweeling, Нидерланды-Люксембург, 2002).

I started reading this book at school when I was bored. I hadn't had a clue what the book was about, so I had no expectations at all.
While reading I found myself really enjoying this book. I was wondering what had happened. Why did the sisters split up? Had they really not seen each other in 60 years? Would the bond between them ever be mended? How different were their lives?
All those questions made me read the book very fast. And gradually all those questions were answered.
Only the end of the book was very abrupt. I didn't really like it. I wanted to read more about the lives of Anna and Lotte. Another thing that could have been better was the description of Lotte's life. We get to know a lot about Anna. The life of Lotte, on the other hand, is often described very fast without all the details I wanted. This could have been done a little better.
I think the book was very good. It showed us the second world war from two totally different perspectives. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read something about the second world war seen from the eyes of normal people.

I vacationed in The Netherlands a few years ago. It amazed me how the memories of WWII and the German occupation still hung in the air. We were dining in a restaurant on Liberation Day and the locals actually soluted us. I was astounded. This wonderfully written novel underscores the animosity between the Dutch and the Germans by telling the story of fraternal twins separated at the age of 5. One then grows up in Germany and the other in the Netherlands. They meet nearly 70 years later and relay the story of each other's lives, particularly during the war. The underlying question is how the citizens of Germany could allow the holocaust to happen. The book does not dwell on the plights of the Jewish people but rather the differences of viewpoints between everyday citizens. It kept me engaged throughout and only dragged a bit when the German sister tells of her long march. I had tears in my eyes as I finished the last page. This book definitely deserves a wider U.S. audience.

One of the best books I've ever read. It will stay with me for a long time. The author is Dutch and few of her books have been translated but I ordered what I could find. This one is about German-born twins separated at 6 years because of the death of both parents. One is taken by her German relatives and the other is taken by her Dutch relatives. They experienced very different wars. They meet again in their 70s at Spa in Belgium and relate their life stories to each other. You can sympathize with both. Riveting!

I enjoyed this book very much. It was very interesting reading about the different lifestyles of two twin sisters during WWII who were separated at age six. They went to live with relatives - one sister in Germany and the other sister in Holland. I found this book to be a gripping emotional read and I would recommend it for those who are interested in historical fiction.

Ik vond het boek De tweeling een mooi boek met veel historische waarde. Het mooie vond ik eraan dat je ziet dat twee levens totaal verschillend kunnen lopen, door oorlog, familie en andere redenen. Ook vond ik het goed om te lezen over hoe het in de oorlog was en dat dan van verschillende kanten.
