This is my third book by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko. I've read their Vita Nostra in original Russian, and The Scar in English translation. Reading in Russian is slow for me, so I was very glad to see that another English translation became available - Age of Witches.

I could not believe how terrible this translation is. Not only numerous typos, but glaring grammatical errors, and there are parts of text that look like if the translation was automated. I know this is not how the Dyachenkos write. Their style is rich, lyrical and poetic. Very beautiful. There is no translator name on the ebook I bought from amazon.com.au but 欧宝娱乐 tells me that the book has been done by Andrew Bromfield, who's translated dozens of other books from Russian and who is, according to Wikipedia, a "British editor and translator of Russian works". I don't want to judge him by this book alone so I'll stop right here.

So, I have finished reading, then bought the original Russian text. It begins with the prologue that is missing from the English version. I've checked some random scenes, mainly Ivga's visions from the last chapter, and there are quite big differences there too. So if you plan to read in English, be warned.

The Scar has been translated by Elinor Huntington and is very well done.

Now for the book. Level one: dark, grim fantasy. Witches and the undead (not zombies, not revenants, there is a hint in the missing prologue as to what they are) and their hunters. Level two: a story of love (but not a love story!), duty and damn hard choices. Level three: the thin line of balance between chaos and order, and what can happen when the line is unhinged. Good diggers will find more :-) and considering that one of the Dyachenkos is a psychiatrist by profession, this shouldn't be a surprise.

The cover may suggest that this is a YA book. Maybe... but there are some quite adult concepts there. Well, at worst, they will be missed :-) Read and enjoy.

Marina and Sergey Dyachenko are apparently very popular in Russian SF fandom, but only a few of their novels have been translated into English. I loved The Scar and Vita Nostra, enough to put the Dyachenkos on my very small "must buy" list of authors. Age of Witches is their latest to be made available in the U.S. It's a strange and interesting Russian urban fantasy novel, but it's definitely not my favorite from this couple. Age of Witches, like The Scar, was originally published in the late 90s in Russia, but it seems to have been given a much less professional translation.

Taking place in a modern, unnamed country, the world is one in which witches exist and have actual powers. Girls (all witches are female) don't know they're witches until they mature. A witch then has the choice of being Initiated, which causes her powers to fully develop, but also sets her irrevocably against mankind. Or she can register with the Inquisition.

"Witch, remember that society does not reject you. By renouncing all things foul and registering, you will become a fully legitimate citizen, with all the rights of a citizen ... By persevering in evil, you condemn yourself to misery and isolation ... Under the terms of Article ... of the Codex of Laws ... who are not registered are punished by the compulsory performance of community service ... those involved in evil-doing ... are subject to trial by the Inquisition ..."

The Inquisition is a government agency dedicated to hunting down and registering witches, and torturing and executing unregistered ones. There are many types of witches of different power levels, none of them really explained. Claudius Guard, the Chief Inquisitor who is one of the main characters, can sense the power and type of a witch, and has some sort of mental power of his own (it is not clear if Inquisitors are born with "witch-hunting" powers or are trained) which allows him to sense witches and also to cause them pain in his presence.

There are also creatures called navkas, from Slavic folklore, who are a sort of undead watery seductress, hunted by a separate paramilitary organization called the Chugaisters.

Navka

Claudius is still haunted by his childhood sweetheart, who became a navka after drowning. This makes him a tormented, morose character who's not at all the pitiless, implacable zealot you'd expect from someone with the title of "Chief Inquisitor." In this world witches are real and really are trying to destroy humanity, but he has to deal with petty internal politics and answer to political higher-ups while trying to unravel a dire conspiracy centered around an emerging "queen-witch."

Things get complicated when he discovers that an unregistered witch named Ivga is engaged to the son of a family friend. Ivga sort of suspects she is a witch but has been in denial. When Claudius exposes her, she goes on the run, and somehow winds up coming to Claudius for help. Claudius, as we later learn being haunted by the memories of his young love whom he could not save, tries to protect her, which means both of them are now caught between the Inquisition and the coming showdown with the queen-witch. The twist in the climax brings their respective storylines to a close, but I found the plot often a bit non-linear and the thoughts and dialog of the characters did not always make sense.

I will still read anything that comes out in English from the Dyachenkos, but Age of Witches was a bit of a slog to get through. A qualified 3.5 stars; I still recommend anyone who wants something different in fantasy read this, but read Vita Nostra or The Scar first.

Heads-up, I read this one in German, and I thought the translation was fairly good, though in that slightly annoying overly dramatic tone of German that all German Fantasy seems to be in. So props to the translation to be tone accurate, but also, ugh.

Current-ish day modern society, but witches exist and so does the inquisition. Our POV characters are a young witch and an old inquisitor. They fall for each other. Their multi-decade age gap seems to mirror the authors' age gap, and that preoccupied a lot of my attention and 鈥 ick. Ickkkk. Big "are you writing about your marriage? I really hope not."

But even apart from the language and the relationship thing, I was not impressed. Now, admittedly, expecting another Vita Nostra isn't fair on anybody, but man, this just was not it. Everybody is constantly moody and obeying their every moody whim, inconsistent, and meh. Nobody is even remotely likeable, everybody sucks:

Witches are somehow both legal to exist if they register and submit to state authority, and also regularly tortured. The inquisition does the torturing (what a nice protagonist to have), but also kinda sorta wants to pretend they keep the general population under control, who hate witches even worse and would just lynch them. Other mythical beings are also around and just integrated in society as enforcers, or hunted. Did I mention that everybody is incompetent, changes their opinion five times per day, is overly given to tantrums, and sucks? Also casual use of torture as just a plot device without any consequences. Ehhhh, I'm not even sure why I finished, as the ending was so muddled and overly dramatic without real purpose. Ah man, I really didn't expect this book to just suck.

The classical sci-fi authors of late Societ school (Strugatsky brothers, for instance) had a peculiar method of writing their novels. A dramatic question is their summary and the novel itself often lookes like an empirical study to find the answer.
Marina and Sergey Dyachenko seem to me classical authors in the best sense of the word. This novel, in particular, looks into the way our core values shape our lives, especially under pressure of exterme circumstances, duties and priorities.
The beauty of archittecture is not only appeal of this novel to me though - it has a unique athmosphere using rural Ukrainian mythology to draw a kind of a fantasy-noir picture of an Eastern European town which is fictional and too probable at the same time.
Already starting on the second part!

This feels like a great book hampered by an awkward translation. I wish I could read Russian. The English translation is at turns exasperating and strangely charming.

Powr贸t po latach - z czystym sumieniem daj臋 4.

Niesamowite jak po latach zmienia si臋 percepcja. Nie ma tego dusznego, mrocznego klimatu, kt贸ry zapami臋ta艂am. Mamy przera偶aj膮c膮 codzienno艣膰, gdzie normalno艣ci膮 s膮 stosiki oraz palenie czarownic, a 偶ycie codzienne toczy si臋 zwyczajnym torem. 艢wiat dystopii nawet nie pr贸buj臋 si臋 ukry膰 pod ciemnymi barwami. Spoziera na ciebie bezwstydnie w pe艂nej krasie w 艣wietle dnia.TO jest du偶o bardziej przera偶aj膮ce.

Wiele w膮tk贸w dopiero teraz sta艂o si臋 dla mnie czytelniejszych,

Ksi膮偶ka dalej pozostaje jedn膮 z moich ulubionych

Edit: 02.02.2020

O rany, nie wierz臋, JEST kontynuacja kt贸ra ma zosta膰 opublikowana w najbli偶szym czasie przez rosyjskie wydawnictwo. Oby polscy wydawcy poci膮gn臋li ten cykl, bo brakuje mi nowych utwor贸w tego duetu. :)

Polskie impresje z ksi膮偶ki znajduj膮 si臋 pod angielskim tekstem.
Polish impression under the English part.

English reviewers mentioned butchered English translation, the fact I can't confirm nor deny, as I had chosen Polish edition (much less lost in translation this way). I had a bad luck with Dyachenko duo鈥檚 books until now. I couldn鈥檛 put away this one. That's very rare as I tend to start reading up to 5-4 books at the same time.

We get three points of view 鈥 present with Ivga and Claudius and the Claudius鈥 past.

What would you do, knowing that by killing one you save thousands? Would you sacrifice one innocent for the sake of ten others? You are the Great Inquisitor, who serves the organisation, which goal is control of uninitiated witches and liquidation of those that have thrown away a normal life to gain power and revenge. However, what is the difference between you and them? After all, you all use magic, you also once made a big mistake. Because of love. Your name is Claudius.

Do you have the right to hate and revenge, knowing that people hold you in contempt and are afraid of you because of who you are? You don鈥檛 care about magic nor people similar to you. All you ever wanted is to live a normal life, so you've become engaged to a good man, who doesn鈥檛 know the truth about you. About your shame of being a witch. And you only wish to be free. Free from the Inquisition, free from persecution. To be able to be Ivga.

By the strange dictate of fate, the witch and the Great Inquisitor begin to work together.

Polskie impresje:
Dotychczas mia艂am pecha do powie艣ci Diaczenk贸w.

Co by艣 zrobi艂, wiedz膮c, 偶e zabijaj膮c jednego ratujesz tysi膮ce? Po艣wi臋ci艂by艣 niewinnego by uratowa膰 dziesi臋ciu? Jeste艣 Wielkim Inkwizytorem, s艂u偶ysz organizacji, kt贸rej celem jest nadz贸r nad niezainicjowanymi wied藕mami i likwidacj膮 tych, kt贸re porzuci艂y normalne 偶ycie na rzecz pot臋gi i zemsty. Jednak czym tak naprawd臋 r贸偶nisz si臋 od tych, kt贸re zabijasz? Wszak i ty i one pos艂uguj膮 si臋 magi膮, a sam niegdy艣 pope艂ni艂e艣 ogromny b艂膮d. Przez mi艂o艣膰. Twe imi臋 to Klaudiusz

Czy masz prawo do nienawi艣ci i zemsty jak to czyni膮 twoje siostry, wiedz膮c, 偶e ludzie tob膮 gardz膮 i boj膮 si臋 tego czym jeste艣 i mo偶esz si臋 sta膰? Nie obchodzi ci臋 magia jak膮 si臋 pos艂ugujesz, ani te, kt贸re upieraj膮 si臋, 偶e powinna艣 czu膰 z nimi pokrewie艅stwo dusz. Czujesz si臋 po prostu zwyk艂膮 dziewczyn膮, pragn膮c膮 jedynie szcz臋艣cia, mi艂o艣ci i domowego ogniska. Zar臋czy艂a艣 si臋 z dobrym cz艂owiekiem, kt贸ry jednak nic nie wie. O tobie. O twoim wstydzie. Wiesz, 偶e chcesz wolno艣ci. Wolno艣ci od inkwizycji, wolno艣ci od prze艣ladowa艅. Chcesz by膰 sob膮, Iwg膮.

Przez dziwne sploty przeznaczenia Wied藕ma i Inkwizytor s膮 zmuszeni razem wsp贸艂pracowa膰

P贸艂 gwiazdki zabrane za ko艅c贸wk臋.

I read "Age of Witches" earlier this year, but this week I found myself drawn back to it. Partially because I rushed through the ending, but there was something else. At first I thought it was a desire to guess how a feminist might view it. A certain percentage of the female population in this book become Witches. First they switch over in a dormant state where they need to be monitored, but then they get converted and they turn malevolent and start causing bad things to happen. Opposed to the Witches are the Inquisitors, who are male and have magic powers as well, but they act on behalf of the State and use their powers solely to contain the Witches. This is all in a modern day setting, an alternate world with cars and phones and atomic bombs. It feels like cold war Russia in the 60s, although that might be projection on my part just knowing that the authors are Russian (or Ukrainian?).

So anyway, on to the plot. A Witch outbreak is taking place that has the Inquisitors working double time torturing and burning to stop its spread and find the root cause. Two main characters are.....wait for it.... yep, a Witch and the head of the Inquisitors. The Witch is a young attractive woman, happily engaged and doing well, but when her powers manifest, she becomes an outcast. The Inquisitor is older, a nice fellow haunted still haunted by the death of his childhood sweetheart decades ago. He takes in the Witch intially without knowing what she is as a favor to a friend. The main tension in the book arises out of what will happen if the Witch goes from dormant to converted and what the Inquisitor will have to do when and if that happens.

This week when I am writing this review in the real world there has been a terrorist attack in Paris. And I realize now that the attack is what prompted this reread of "Age of Witches". Although only translated into English in 2014, "Age of Witches" was written in 1997 well before the apparent rise of Al-Qaeda or ISIL, although some of the predecessors to these groups might have been present in Russia in the Chechen conflict, so this book was not written with the recent terrorist activities in mind. But there is an overlap. "Age of Witches" has these dormant Witches, nice young women for the most part, who need to be monitored because some of them transform into incomprehensible monsters that do horrible things. Sort of like Muslims becoming enticed by fundamentalist propaganda and then turning into suicide bombers for reasons that seem incomprehensible to those of us in the West. And in "Age of Witches" to get at the bottom of it and to stop the Witches, the Inquisitors torture and burn. With terrorism, the Western response is to escalate and drop bombs, some of which end up killing innocent civilians with those killings giving the terrorists more fuel for their recruiting. I am not trying to make a political statement here. I'm just saying the sense of dread is similar in the book and in real life - the incomprehensibility of Witches and Islamic terrorists, and then this need to escalate the violence in response, and yet feel very uncomfortable with that violent response.

This is the third book by Sergey and Marina Dyachenko to be translated into English in recent years, and personally this is my favorite. I found the ending a bit weak, but the overall atmosphere and character development are very strong. As I understand it, the Dyachenkos have written quite a few more books, and I hope more of them get translated.

I would have rated much higher but the Kindle version was riddled with typos, missing punctuation; it was a mess, and that is a shame. The concept and story itself was compelling, but unfortunately I was annoyed by all the errors I couldn't enjoy it.

Mitrei脽endes Buch. Teilweise jedoch sehr verwirrend. Man f眉hlt sich manchmal etwas ins kalte Wasser geworfen, das "Grundsystem" dieser Welt, wenn 眉berhaupt, nur nebenbei erl盲utert wird.
