After reading many of the Little People Big Dreams series I was pleasantly surprised to find this series follows a similar theme but unlike the other series, this book (and I've only read one so far) was much more concise with facts, gave much more information an did a far better job getting across the information without missing things out, glossing over, being vague or having ugly or anachronist illustrations as the other the other series seemed to make a habit of.
A double page timeline, glossary and further reading page is included in the back pages. I would definitely recommend this as an introduction for the young to Anne Frank, it will be interesting to see what the rest of this series is like.
This a wonderfully illustrated book for children and young people with a simple and moving text. It is the story of the Franks, a family of German Jews who with the rise of Nazism emigrated and transferred their business to live, work and attend school in Amsterdam. When the World War II began, German expansion led to the invasion several countries including the Netherlands. The occupying powers soon instigated the same rigorous anti-Semitic regime which unsettled the Frank family, ensured they lost business rights and freedom of movement. Fearing the worse the family along with countless others in the occupied countries went into hiding. Among their family was a bright and aspiring writer we still remember today as Anne Frank. She had for a few years been keeping a diary. That writing, because it was insight into dramatic historical events. A first-hand historical voice, that because of her humour, honesty and candour when it was passed to the surviving member of the family has become an international best seller. In today's multi-media, instant news, iPhone messaging and recording such a time cannot be so easily imagined, the need for a teenager's heartfelt thoughts and account has never been more relevant. Especially, when many in today's generation, challenge the reality of the holocaust and the rise of anti-Semitism undermines the UK political Labour party. I would hope that this background account, although drawn from Anne's diary, will encourage many young people and new readers to read her diary in its entirety. It is amazing that this young woman has touched so many lives over the past 70 years and has the potential to change attitudes and inspire today and future generations.
This book is so beautiful inside out! The physical copy is so much to be grateful about holding it and reading it. It feels so damn good!
The illustrations are top notch. The writing perfect for beginners and young readers. The brief account of Anne’s life is well documented. I appreciate the fact that things before the war and what led to the situation that made Anne’s family hide have been well explained.
I absolutely love this series. What an incredibly clever way to make history accessible to young children, teaching them about important figures who have helped to shape our world.
Everyone knows the story of Anne Frank but it is sometimes difficult to sum up her life or the importance of her experiences for young, curious ears who hear her name. This book is the perfect means of introducing children to both the story of Anne and the horrors of The Holocaust. It also goes one step further in providing a brief overview of World War II.
The prose is very effective, making the story concise yet inclusive and informative, and the illustrations are beautiful. The timeline is both visual and useful, and the glossary of terms is brilliant for explaining any term used that a child may not understand.
A wonderful book that every child will benefit from reading. I will certainly be picking one up for our house. Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this.
The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Little Guides to Great Lives: Anne Frank is a little illustrated book for children that introduce them to the life of Anne Frank and the atrocities of WWII. I like the concept behind this book. The text is simple so children can understand it. Plus, at the end of it there's a glossary where the most difficult world are explained. I feel like this series will be a great welcomed addition to bookstores, libraries and classrooms for children.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
I was very eager to read this one, and thankfully the publisher allowed me to read this one, yay! I just adore Anne Frank and I have re-read her diary many times. Of course I had to try out a new book about her, this time for kids with gorgeous illustrations.
Yep, that is the main reason I wanted to read this one the illustrations. If they were anything like the cover, I knew I would love them. And I did. They were pretty and I loved that they used the same colours for each of them. Red, purple-ish/blue, brown. It really fitted with the story/the theme/the characters. I also loved the style of them.
The story tells us all about Anne Frank, about the war, about them hiding, about her dreams and hopes, and then how it ends for Anne Frank, but how her story of course lives on. With her diary being published, edited and told again and again. I really loved reading this book, I am so happy that Anne’s memory lives on, that her dream (while she won’t see it) came true. She is famous, for who she is and for her writing.
**I was sent this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review**
While this story is never fun to read about, it is still extremely important for everyone to learn, especially children. Hiding the truth about the atrocities that millions faced doesn’t serve anyone. The illustrations in this book are beautiful and will catch childrens attention. The writing, while all factual and extremely well done, is not too intense for children.
The Diary of Anne Frank is one of my all-time favorite books and this short illustrated book was a great introduction to the life of Anne Frank, her family and of the Second World War. The book is simple yet very informative. There is also a glossary at the end of the book which I thought is very helpful. The illustrations are captivating. My favorite would be the diagram of the secret annex. Anne Frank is one of the most important and inspiring figures in history and this book will definitely inspire a lot of younger children. I'll definitely buy a finished copy of this book to add on my Anne Frank book collection.
I received an earc from Lauence King Publishing via NetGalley. This did not affect my overall opinion of the book.
Little Guides to Great Lives is an excellent series for younger children. I’d say 2nd grade through 4th. The books are illustrated biographies of some of the most inspirational figures in history. The one granted to me by Lawrence King Publishing was about the life of Ann Frank. While she is well known for who she was and the diary she wrote I did come away with information I had either forgotten or never known. I feel children will immediately take to the books where text is accompanied with lovely illustrations. I escpecially liked the diagram of the secret annex. It was actually bigger than I had imagined, but since so many people were hidden there, I’m sure it was quite cramped. The text portrays the struggles of Ann and her family as well as their stamina and bravery. The timeline at the end of the book puts her whole life in perspective. I feel this series will be a huge welcomed addition to libraries and classrooms for beginning researchers.
DISCLAIMER: The book is given by NetGalley, the author and the publisher in exchange of an honest review. All the review written is not related to any personal issues or connection.
TRIGGER: This is a sweet graphic children book narrated the story of the famous Anne Frank. The story is beautifully told by Isabel Thomas and wonderfully illustrated by Paola Escobar.
Publication Date: 22 April 2019
“Anne’s diary has helped generations of people to understand the impact of war on human beings. It reminds us that the things we have in common are far more important than what makes us different.
Ideally pitched for primary school libraries and other educators, this pictorial book shows all the context behind the Anne Frank diaries, as well as giving the bare bones of her biography. The strong design only uses two colours, but does it well, and the whole piece is most distinctive as a result. With many similar books out there already this might struggle to find the audience it deserves, but it could hardly have been done better.
WoW................Anne Frank by Isabel Thomas, illustrations by Paola Escobar just took my breathe away.
I found this book one of the "** Best illustrated**" books about Anne Frank and it has been beautifully put together. It's for children and young people. This book is crammed about her life and her family etc. This would be great for school projects and discussions etc with other children.
Every child should taught the Story of Anne Frank and I would Highly recommend this book especially for schools and Library's etc.
Just Brilliant throughout. This will be purchased for my nephew.

This series is perfect in its simplicity and style to tell a story that gets the message across without being too complicated and wordy. The illustrations are a perfect detail that's not too childish. I think it's time I actually read the diary of Anne Frank, I've been meaning to for so long but have been nervous to open that.
I really enjoyed Anne Frank: Little Guide to Great Lives by Isabel Tomas and illustrated by Paola Escobar. The information in the book is simple but complete, and the illustrations, are fantastic. Thank you so much #netgalley for allowing me to read this rendition of #annefrank. 5 stars!
A young girl who dreamt of being a writer and ultimately touched the world with her personal look into the atrocities of WWII... Anne Frank's words have touched the world for generations and now her story is being told in a new way. In this Little Guides to Great Lives book, Anne Frank's legacy is shared using a friendly, yet informative, picture book format.
As a parent, I've struggled with how to talk about the Holocaust with my kids. But this book made it so simple. The author was honest without sharing too much and wrote about the horrors of WWII in an age appropriate manner. Marketed to second to sixth grade, I came away from the book with new insight into Anne Frank's struggle for survival as well as further background information about Nazi Germany. This would make a great introduction to WWII for any elementary aged student. I'm happy to have found this series and this edition in particular.
*Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
„Little Guides to Great Lives: Anne Frank is an illustrated book about the life of Anne Frank during World War II.
The illustrations in this book are beautiful, I loved the style and the colors. The language is simple and appropriate for children. There’s also a glossary with explanations for some of the more difficult words / expressions that kids might not know yet (e.g. Allied forces, D-Day landings,...). There’s no sugarcoating about the horrors of the war, which is something I’m glad about, but I’d be cautious about giving this book to kids that are very young. A timeline at the end of the book sums up the most important events of Anne‘s life and the war.
This book is probably one of the best children’s books I’ve read lately and I highly recommend it. Now I’m looking forward to reading more books from this series.

I received an electronic ARC from Laurence King Publishing Ltd through NetGalley. An easy to read biography for upper elementary level students. Thomas tells the story of Anne's life and death in simple language. The illustrations offer a stylized window into her world. The timeline and glossary at the end share further information at an appropriate level also. This book brings out how young Anne was. Thomas shares the human interactions and the difficulties involved in hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam.
{My thoughts} I remember reading The Diary of Anne Frank when I was in the 8th grade. At the school I had attended it was required reading. I strongly believe that every child should have to read it.
This book is based off that book, but it is a much more simplified version. It is in the form of a graphic novel. The illustrations are incredible. I can’t help but admire how nice they flow with the words within the pages of this book.
The text is simple enough that most young children will understand it. If they run across come words they don’t know there is a glossary in the back where they can look up the meaning of those words. This is extremely helpful for children that haven’t yet learned what some things are. It gives them the opportunity to look them up without having to ask an adult, however, I think asking helps to lead to more discussion.
There is also an index in the back of the book that can help direct children to certain pages of the book in which they may have more of an interest.
I already knew most of the things that had been mentioned in the book. I didn’t however know that Anne wasn’t her given name but a nickname. I didn’t know her given name was Annelise. Such a pretty name for such a pretty girl. She had hopes and dreams like so many other children. She achieved her dream of becoming a writer with the help of her father. I think she would have loved knowing that her words have impacted the world in such a strong and positive way.
This is a wonderfully well done book and I think that every child that isn’t old enough to read the actual diary, should read this book. There is so much within the pages that they can learn, and of course so many things that they can ask questions about as well.
Thank you Netgalley and Laurence King Publishing Ltd. for providing me an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars
I honestly thought this was going to be a graphic novel adaptation of "Diary of a Young Girl", but "Little Guides to Great Lives: Anne Frank" is quite different than that. It's an illustrated biography of Anne Frank's life, explaining who she is, what she did and why her story is important.
In my opinion, I think it was interesting and good for younger readers. I thought it was going to be something else, but I was pleasantly surprised. The art was amazing and made the book a thousand times better. It's interactive and fun and I really liked the color scheme that was chosen, as well as the use of different patterns.
"Little Guides of Great Lives: Anne Frank" is part of a collection that showcases important people from our history. Frida Kahlo, Marie Curie and Nelson Mandela are examples of people who have been showcased in these little books before. Anne is definitely in great company!
In conclusion, I quite liked this little graphic novel, although it was different than I expected. I think it's good for younger readers to know more about Anne Frank and her history and I think they will definitely enjoy the art style.
Although short, Anne Frank: Little Guides to Great Lives is full of information, beautiful illustrations, and helpful maps. I have taught the dramatized version of The Diary of Anne Frank for four years now, and even I learned something new from this book. I am excited for its full publication so that I can share it with my students and incorporate it into my curriculum. The maps and simple explanations of often difficult subject matter will help my lower-level readers understand the content of the play and hopefully inspire my students further to read Anne's diary for themselves and to see others by our similarities instead of our differences. I look forward to reading more books in this series on Little Guides to Great Lives.
*Thank you, NetGalley for an eBook advanced reader's copy of this title. I was provided with this title prior to publication in exchange for an honest review.
Wonderfully accessible for children and beautifully illustrated. The book uses simple language which manages to successfully condense the story of Anne's life without losing any of the impact of her experience, or the political and socio-economic climate of the time.

What I Liked
First off I have to say that the story of Anne Frank and the holocaust as a whole is not an easy topic no matter how you look at it. But, these are both important stories that need to be shared. I read this book two times before writing this review, for a few reasons.
The firs being that this author did a wonderful job telling this story. It is done in such a way that it does not hide the truth, but gently explains what happened to Anne Frank and others who were victimized during WWII. It explained the steps leading up to the labor and concentration camps in a factual way, but in a very respectful manner. I have to say that this is one of the most gentle, but truthful children's book I have read on the topic personally.
The second reason I read this multiple times was the art style and illustrations that are present throughout. While I hate to say that this story is beautiful, because it is so heart breaking, this book is beautiful and is a work of art.
Another thing I loved about this book was that it just did not tell the story of Anne Frank, but it was so much more. It talked about the global economy and the rise of the Nazi to give the story context. There was also a lot of helpful information such as key character descriptions, timelines, and a glossary to aid young readers in learning and making sense of the complex story. But, the best thing they had in there was further reading. You can tell the author cares about the topic and is passionate about learning when they share where readers can learn more.
What I Didn’t Like
Honestly, there is nothing bad I can say about this book. It was well structured, it covered a difficult topic in a very accessible way to children.
Overall Thoughts
Overall I really enjoyed reading this, even though I am not a child I found it to be informative and interested without being overwhelming. This is a great way to expose young children the the holocaust and the story of Anne Frank without being overwhelming in my opinion. I even bought a copy for a friend of mine for her to read to her children.
Little Guides to Great Lives-Anne Frank is a biography written by Isabel Thomas and is for readers 7 to 11 years old.
Anne Frank was a German born Jewish adolescent who was forced into hiding in order to escape German Nazis. During this two-year period, Anne recorded in a diary her hopes, fears, short stories, and experiences. Sadly, Anne died at a German concentration camp from illness; she was only 15 years old.
The only survivor from Anne’s family was her father, Otto Frank, who made it his life’s work to share Anne’s diary with the world. Anne’s diary has since been read by millions and is often used today to educate people about the impact of war and discrimination.
This book did an amazing job of introducing Anne Frank’s life to young readers. The plot is simple enough to understand but so informative. It explains in a gentle way what millions of Jews had to endure during this horrific time in history. The author does a great job of briefly describing the personality of each person in Anne’s life, and the important roll they all played to ensure their survival. The language is easy for children to read and the interactive purple and red illustrations are perfect. I rate this book 5 stars and suggest it for anyone interested in Anne Frank’s life.
A thoughtfully written and beautifully illustrated child friendly book about the lives of Anne Frank and her family who were Jewish Germans.
It briefly covers their happy lives in Frankfurt which went downhill once Hitler got into power. The family fled to Amsterdam where they eventually ended up hiding and living in an office annexe during the Second World War. It is from the annexe that Anne wrote her world famous diary of their lives and laid out her innermost thoughts and hopes for the future. There are many important words underlined and explained for children in the glossary.
Would recommend for any children studying World War Two or visiting the annexe in Amsterdam.
