The Demon Accords, Book 6
By: John Conroe
Narrated by: James Patrick Cronin
This book introduces the reader to a new group of characters that have special gifts. Unfortunately, they end up on the wrong end of trouble and get caught up with the enemies of our gang. In fact, they end up in the same facility! So good things do come of it. This book is a wild ride so hang on tight!
The narrator is so perfect for these books, I can't imagine anyone else doing them! Great job!

Re-Read for the third time this year October 2019.

Re-read May 2019. Initial review below:

Again, the rating is more for the series than this specific book, though I did still enjoy the book. It was completely different from the first five though as this is the story of the male witch Declan who was introduced at the end of the last book. While it did have Chris and Tanya, they showed up almost toward the end and the story wasn't from their point of view even when they were present. So at the end of the last book, Chris pointed out that he needed to get a team together to help deal with all the demon portals that were popping up all over the world and then this book has a different narrator. I have to assume that Declan is going to end up as part of the team. I also get the impression that from now on, every other book will be from a different point of view ( I don't know that for sure of course, but that is the impression I am getting).

This book gives the background of Declan and Sara and how they ended up in the AIR facility at the end of book 5. It pretty much follows the same pattern as Chris's story in the first book (broad-strokes at least). Declan is a very powerful male witch (which is apparently really unusual as male witches are rare and they are usually weaker), he lost his family early in life and he feels some guilt that it is his fault (even though it is not). He is powerful and smart but he feels ostracised at school - most kids are afraid of him or outright hate him, except that the friends he does have are completely loyal. He meets Sara and tries to help her. He is of course a good guy and tries to do the right thing all the time (though he does have a dark side). While he is both selfless and courageous, he is also completely stupid about women (Does remind you of anyone else in this world?). Sara is also super powerful, but vulnerable and she too doesn't know much about the real world and relationships (again remind you of anyone?). Even though I noticed the similarities, I didn't care as I really like the author's writing style and the narrator does an excellent job (usually with Russian accents, but there were also Irish accents in this book as well.)

I might as well just go ahead and buy the rest of the series now because I am completely hooked.

The series is a fast paced and fun pulp UF. The world-building is a bit simplistic and the plot and story are full of tropes and flaws but none of them really hurt the series all that much as the characters are (usually) a likeable bunch and the story itself is engaging and fun. It all has the feel of a fun action movie and managed to hold my attention from start to finish.

This sixth Demon Accords book actually changed things up a lot. We got a new lead character in the form of Declan O'Carroll. He was the witch kid that Chris saved from the AIR facility at the end of the fifth book while he was rescuing his god daughter. This whole book was told from Declan's POV and the first half of it was a prequel to the events of the fifth book that saw him and his girlfriend trapped in that AIR facility. The second half of the book pressed into new territory. Chris and Tania did appear but just as secondary characters. I must admit I'd have been pretty annoyed by the bait and switch of lead characters had I not known in advance that it was going to happen. I peeked at the blurb for this one after I read the fifth book. I'll admit I've even taken a break before starting this one as a new lead character after five books of the same one feels more like a spin-off to me than a part of the regular series. At least with Black Frost it was marked as .5 book in the series. I'm glad I knew about the change of lead character before I picked this one up as I still recall how annoyed I was with this type of bait and switch back in the day with the Sword of Truth series!

Despite the change of lead character this turned out to be a fairly typical Demon Accords book. Declan seemed an OK guy and was easy enough to like. Well, he was most of the time. It was a bit annoying that he ended up sleazeing on a second girl after pairing with the first one. I hope Conroe avoids slipping down the harem path that is plaguing self-published male aimed action and fantasy series of late but I'm not all that hopeful as he was beginning to tease something similar in the Chris POV books! Declan was like a younger and lesser version of Chris. Which was both a good and a bad thing. Bad as it showed a lack of creativity on Conroe's part in being able to write unique characters as both Declan and his girlfriend were copies of Chris and Tania. It was a good thing in some ways though as it meant this book felt like a typical Demon Accords book.

This book had a bunch of good moments and was fairly engaging but the flaw was that the AIR facility stuff in the middle of the story that told the events of the fifth book from a different perspective was a little weak. The stuff that focused on Declan's life and did not overlap with Chris ended up being the best bits of the story.

This series is mostly a mix of action, paranormal happenings, and light humour so it really needs the lead characters to be likeable since the villains are a bit throwaway and I think Conroe just about managed that with this instalment. Declan's friends and girlfriend were a likeable enough bunch and he was OK himself most of the time.

The other slight flaw of this series is the fact that Conroe can tend to overdo the wish fulfilment elements of the story. All his lead character are massively overpowered and super popular special snowflakes. It works for a while but then becomes problematic. It is likely even why Conroe has decided to introduce some new lead characters and reduce the focus on Chris. The other flaw in Conroe as a writer is his slightly disturbing Goodkindesque views on women. It is a minor thing but does make me roll my eyes while listening to his stories!

All in all I felt like this was a decent enough instalment of the Demon Accords series. The switch of lead character was not a problem. The only problem was the overlap of events with the happenings of the fifth book as those moments lacked any tension or freshness. Hopefully now we are past that and Declan has been introduced the rest of the books focusing on him going to supernatural college will be even more fun!

Rating: 3.5 stars. This had a few flaws but was readable enough.

Audio Note: I think James Patrick Cronin did a good job with the audio.

A nice little side quest
This book switches the POV to some high school students. It's cute and fun. Don't worry if you are in love with the main story because this is the main story retold. Keiko is Tanya, super badass hottie the hero tried to save. she is emotionally distant at first but is falling for the big goofy lug. Declan is Christian, shy guy who feels like a freak, is clueless around girls and turns out to be ridiculously overpowered. But this book also adds a group of supporting characters that the main story line would have benefited from. a good read.

This book was weird at first, because it is not from Chris or Tanyas point of view but after I got used to that I really enjoyed this book. It is in the same style as the first books but from a new point of view. Also the cross over with the original characters was interesting. The new characters are really fun and look to have a big part to play in the overall story. The book keeps to the main themes of the previous books but adds another layer to the overall story.

(3.5 stars) It was slightly confusing initially when the series, which had been featuring Chris and Tonya as the MCs, took (what felt like) a sharp turn to Declan and Keiko. But, we quickly recovered and caught up with where the author was heading. It helped that we've been listening to these books back-to-back and soon realized these characters were very briefly met in (book 5). After acclimating to the switch, we found we quite enjoyed getting to know these two, their families and friends.

"There are a few, a small number of individuals whose mental capacity is so low that they probably view common sense as a super power."

4.0/5.0 A refreshing change up from a series that traditionally, exclusively focuses on one POV. While the change of perspective was nice, I would have preferred it done in spin off form rather than a main entry in the series. The story while, slowly paced in the beginning, was a little mired by magic school cliches and tropes. Once our previous heroes appeared, I felt the story picked up and really shined from that point forward.

In this book we get the background of the kids who were held with Toni. It was interesting to see Chris from the perspective of someone who had never met him. Toni had already given everyone fair warning about what her godfather was like. That little girl is fierce.

Back to this book. AIR is up to their usual hijinks. One of the bullies has a mother who I really, really wish had been given her comeuppance. She was worse than her kid. We also met some regular old humans. Rory is always good for a laugh. We need him and Lydia to meet just to see who can outsnark the other. Of course, Lydia has over a century of age on the boy so it wouldn’t be exactly fair. Still, I can see Rory totally enjoying it. Short people unite!

A secondary storyline with Irish witches wasn’t completed in this book. They weren’t necessary. If only they would have just left.

We will pick up some of these storylines in .

im usually not a fan of "filler" releases but in this case it really was for the better.
introducing another protagonist not only opened up a perspective other than Chris´ it also saved the series from losing its depth: The story so far has impressed me with how nonlinear it is, featuring a lot of different characters and groups whose goals and concerns differ from each other, wich made the read have an authentic feel. Unfortunately the main characters have long grown beyond the interesting group hierarchies and dynamics, standing above the cabals of the different groups. While the process of achieving that state was entertaining to read about, a level of the story has been "lost" since the main characters stand "above" the supernatural society. Instead of making the protagonist fall down by robbing him of his powers, after wich the process of fighting his way up is repeated, the author chose to introduce another protagonist to narrate things from a perspective that is more integrated in "normal" peoples´ problems and obstacles than Chris´. The author went even further by starting to give some chapters to non protagonists thus adding more depth to the story, something i hope he will continue in Forced Ascent. Im very content with this book.

This felt like a real departure from the rest of the series- Chris isn't the main character for this one, we don't even get any POV chapters from Chris. What we do get are a huge array of different characters giving their POV and while it's nice to see the characters from different perspectives I felt the the story didn't flow as well when the different chapters were different POVS (luckily we don't have any head hopping within the chapter). John Conroe writes in a very close first person style- which worked for the other books but I found it a bti jarring when we were moving about from one character to another.

I think if this had been a side book I wouldn't have been disappointed but I was expecting a book about Chris- I've enjoyed the other books so much I didn't even read the blurb before diving straight in. This overlaps the events in Fallen Stars with the storylines meeting up towards the end of both books and I just found it a bit confusing, as we jumped backwards a few weeks from when we last saw Declan.

DNF after skim reading 15% and reaching 45% through the book I just said no more.

6 Years or so after the first attempt at reading this book and having listened to the series up until this book for a second time. I came to the same conclusion This book here is where the Demon Accords ends and a different story in the same universe starts. But all the old characters become at best sidekicks or useless and Declan is the new Main character. I'm not a fan of YA for the most part and this is a good example of why I don't like it. So yeah I enjoyed the series up until this point but it seems every book after this one has nothing to do with Chris and Tanya and I hate authors that switch MC mid way through an established series. I was going too give this book a chance this time I thought but after 10 minutes I was like HELL NO I AIN'T INTERESTED IN TEENAGE ANGST AND DRAMA.

I have nothing against series telling the story of other characters in the book, especially if those side characters have been introduced in previous books. However, the book is about a character that was breifly mentioned at the end of the previous book. The character had no real connection with Chris's group.

With that said is was a descent story and the characters were interesting. When you get to the part were the plot naturally ends, it doesn't it starts a whole new plot which I don't particular think was the best idea.

Wonderful break from the usual in this series, Declan turned out to be an interesting character to follow around, and his family and friends a nice bunch as well. Now the name of Declan 'father' was an interesting choice for the author even more given how compatible he is with lighting, could it be a hint to a deeper significant of Declan anomaly, I am really intrigued.

Half of this book is an introduction to new witchy characters, some of whom may round out the team crystalizing around Chris.

I'm also curious to see how well a lab-grown, military-trained chimera stacks up against weres.

Fun times ahead for us readers.

Slower

Slower paced and from a new point of view and main character, I found this instalment came close to losing my interest. It had an almost YA feel, too much in high school, and while I like a good YA story I don’t like YA mixed into an otherwise adult setting.

These books are like 80's action movies - very entertaining, easy on the brain and a little over the top. They're written like every boy's fantasy. Power, vengeance, extreme good looks. Nothing too deep.
I'm really enjoying the series.

A new character - same story greatness

I continue to enjoy traveling back to the world where Chris Gordon lives. And while this book centered around Declan O’Carrol who we met briefly in Fallen Stars, it was just as fun plus we got to see Chris and Tanya through the eyes of a third party. This is the sixth book in the urban fantasy Demon Accord series. I love that Declan’s character, despite his unique overwhelming magical powers, is still sweet, a bit naive, modest, and an awkward teenage boy which makes him a very likeable hero. Declan is a very powerful male witch which is an anomaly. Usually only females have power. Male witches may have a tiny amount of power. He has been in hiding with his aunt in a small town in Vermont after his aunt and mother fled Ireland. Caeco and her mother are also running and hiding. Caeco was engineered in a lab and is an enhanced human because of this. Upon their arrival in the small town they meet and are befriended by Declan and his aunt. This begins the Declan amd Caeco adventure. The book has the some of the same main characters from the first five books with some new characters added into the mix. The story includes what you’d expect from this genre - fighting, dangerous situations, paranormal creatures, evil masterminds, henchmen, loyal friends and family, tragic back stories, mystical coincidences, snark, and laughs. I thought I would not enjoy this book as much as the others in the series since Chris was not the MC but it did not change the enjoyment of the story at all. I will definitely keep reading the series to see what evil beings and plans are thwarted by Chris, Declan and the rest of the crew.

Another side story

Second book where Chris is not the main character, in fact, the books is told from a few different points of view, even if we can agree that Declan and Caeco are the main characters, and they remind me a little of Chris and Tanya in their relationship, but not in a bad way, it's not a copy, just a theme.Ìý I loved the new characters and I like how the link to the main story through Oracle is stablished early on, and we even see them interact with the characters that we already know.Ìý It also touches on some of the events at the end of the previous book, but from the point of view of the ones being held in the Silo.Ìý And it's very interesting seeing the characters that we already know through the eyes of others.ÌýÌý
Like with Chris and Tanya, there is something that links Declan and Caeco early on, but their relationship is very different, and more difficult, they are only a few years youngers than the others when we first met them, but they are just kids, both of them going to the same highschool and having their share of teenage drama.Ìý I really hope we will get to see more about the characters in the book.

outstanding urban fantasy!!!!

I read tons of Urban Fantasy, and one of my favorite elements is how the author decides on the interaction of modern people and technology with the supernatural. This series brings the relationship of supernaturals and modern tech to a whole new level! How deep the story goes with science, government, and real human emotions and interaction with the supernatural world. By far, John Conroe relates the most realistic approach of any author I've read! And, the plot lines are so superb, I can't put this book down! Amazingly real characters, nonstop unpredictable plot twists, emotional growth, superbly written dialogue, and a fallible MC you want to route for! In fact, the only negative of this series is how it has effected my sleep! I;m up all night reading these nonstop pager turners! Thank you John, you master word-smith!

A nice change of pace & focus brings more light to the supernatural world of witches

Declan and Caeco are an interesting chapter in Chris’s story but one that I hope we get to read more about. Definitely looking forward to the academy books that seem to be ahead for many of the newly discovered young supernaturals. I’m excited for the next in the series and curious about what other characters will appear...

Switch-A-Roo

So, this was not what I expected, very little concerning Chris, Tanya and the gang. In book 5 two characters were introduced near the end, and book 6 is primarily about these two. Now, the story is good and how all this ties in is very well accomplished, but it wasn’t what I had expected.
The good thing is that the author makes the storyline work and provides additional options.

Even the backfill of characters is good

At first I was resentful of this book not centering around Gorden, Tatiana and the gang. I even thought about skipping it and just moving on to the next book. But, I was captured by the story and ended up thoroughly enjoying it and look forward to more of Declan & Caeco's story. I am binge reading this series and thoroughly enjoying it.

Glad for this book

I appreciate the story of Declan and Caeco. It’s a great story about 2 obscure characters in one of the previous books. It was cool seeing Chris and Tanya and his band of merry characters from someone else’s point of view.

Good continuation of the series. Primarily with different characters that will likely reappear later. I wasn't sure I'd like the way it was written. It swaps between character views from one chapter to the next but he did okay. I was never confused as to whose point of view I was reading.
