Emily Wilde has spent her life studying faeries. A renowned dryadologist, she has documented hundreds of species of Folk in her Encyclopaedia of Faeries. Now she is about to embark on her most dangerous academic project studying the inner workings of a faerie realm-as its queen.

Along with her former academic rival-now fiancé-the dashing and mercurial Wendell Bambleby, Emily is immediately thrust into the deadly intrigues of Faerie as the two of them seize the throne of Wendell's long-lost kingdom, which Emily finds a beautiful nightmare, filled with scholarly treasures.

Emily has been obsessed with faerie stories her entire life, but at first she feels as ill-suited to Faerie as she did to the mortal world-how could an unassuming scholar like herself pass for a queen? Yet there is little time to settle in-Wendell's murderous stepmother has placed a deadly curse upon the land before vanishing without a trace. It will take all of Wendell's magic-and Emily's knowledge of stories-to unravel the mystery before they lose everything they hold dear.

⤷Ugh what an amazing ending to the series!! 😭 Emily and Wendell had even more romance this time around, and every moment was absolutely ADORABLE!! All of the things he does for her is so so intentional, and dare I say protective Wendell is the best (We love his duality of course)!! :') I wish they had a teeny bit more adventure time together, but it fits with the plot :) At least it meant getting Wendell's letters, his small parts of writing is always my fav in all of the books <3 I always loved getting faerie lore and their stories, but the way they weaved so well into the plot in this book especially impressed me!! I seriously did not know what was gonna happen next, so fitting for twisty faeries ~ The connections back to their past adventures + old friends showing up made my heart radiate with happiness :)) This is one of those series that genuinely made me laugh out loud, and I love it so much 🫶🏼 When is the novella coming, because I need some more faerie fun 🤭

Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for an E-Arc in exchange for an honest review!

In a Nutshell: The third book of the Emily Wilde series. Not a standalone. Great characters. Slow-ish pacing. Too convenient and flat in the plotting. Not as dark as could have been. Recommended in publication order only to those who are keen on completing the series. Not my favourite of the series by far.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
( Note: This review might contain minor spoilers from the earlier two Emily Wilde books. )
Plot Preview:
1910. Emily still can’t accept that she might soon be the Queen of Faerie. An accomplished mortal scholar on faeries, she is now working on her biggest research topic  studying the faerie realm with her foe-turned-fiancé Wendell, who is making plans to recapture his rightful position as the King of Faerie. However, the duo soon learn that Wendell’s stepmother, the earlier queen, has placed a curse upon the kingdom. Wendell can use his magic to save his home, but that alone won’t be enough as the consequences are deadly. It is up to Emily to find the perfect story so that she can write a happy ending for her beloved.
Just as in the earlier books, the story comes to us through Emily’s journal entries written in first person.
This book is not to be read as a standalone work. It starts right at the deep end, continuing immediately after the events of the second book. As such, it ended up as a big test of my memory, which sadly didn’t come to my assistance. I regret the long gap I had between Books Two and Three because I didn’t remember the nitty-gritties of the earlier plot.
Bookish Yays:
😍 Emily as a character  a rare fictional thirty-one-year-old who acts her age. Though she is as focussed on her scholarly pursuits as ever, she is more open about showing her emotions. I love her character growth over the series.
😍 Wendell  the incorrigible fae king who has so many flaws and is still so appealing. This book shows both his practical and his wild sides.
😍 Most of the remaining characters, comprising a motley mix of human and courtly fae and common fae. The variety is extensive this time. Loved the reappearance of some beloved characters from the earlier two books.
😍 A special Yay to Shadow and Orga for being as awesome as always.
😍 The personal-journal approach to storytelling. Emily’s diary actually feels like a journal and not a novel. While her attention to detail can get tedious as well as a tad spoiler-ish at times, I still appreciate it as the writing is authentic to the source of information.
😍 The relationship between Emily and Wendell, which began as a one-sided attraction, turned into romance, and has now blossomed into love. I like how the relationship is based on their connection as well as their mutual need for and respect for each other. Wendell isn't shown as the ideal suitor just because he is fae. Emily isn't depicted just as the grump to Wendell’s sunshine.
😍 No needless recaps of the plotline of the earlier books. The author clearly remembers that this is part of a series, and she expects readers to enter into this story knowing what happened earlier. Though my memory failed me on this, I still respect this writing choice of maintaining proper continuity.
Bookish Mixed Bags:
😐 The plot is firmly Emily’s this time around. Though Wendell does have a strong role and there are several supporting characters, the story relies mainly on Emily to proceed. This feels a bit too limiting, especially for one reason: almost every decision taken by Emily is based on the titular “lost tales. So much so that she is like a horse wearing blinders about only stories being able to help them out of the problems. I did like the cleverness of the lost tale itself, but I didn’t understand this narrow-minded over-reliance on the tale. It restricted the plot.
😐 Yet again, there are plenty of footnotes in Emily’s journal. Some of these (especially the lore) are interesting, but after a while, they just feel superfluous. Just as in the second book, I skipped reading the footnotes after a point and had no trouble understanding the main plot. (On an aside, I found it amusing to see Emily herself complaining about footnotes in her research books.)
😐 The pace is quite slow for most of the way, though the tempo jumps up during the few action sequences. The second half has much better pacing.
😐 While this is the most serious of the three books, it is also the lightest in terms of plot. The action scenes, when they do pop up, are gripping. However, they are far and few between, with most of the storyline moving ahead mainly on research and discussions. The potentially most dangerous sequence lasts hardly for a couple of pages.
😐 I missed Wendell’s bantering with Emily. Granted, the relationship has grown and they aren’t in that initial phase anymore. But it would have been nice to see more of those lovely teasing moments between the two.
Bookish Nays:
😒 The only new entrant to the cast is a disappointment. There could have been so much more to that character’s arc, but it was reduced to a discordant one-noted tune.
😒 The plot development is too convenient. Even when there are major confrontation sequences, the challenges pop up only from others malevolence, not from Emily’s actions or decisions. All her issues, no matter how troublesome, are resolved on her very first attempt at tackling them.
😒 The final chapter  such a flat and boring ending. Instead of ending on a high, the story ends on a mundane level. The endings of the earlier books were much better.
Basically, I had enjoyed the first two books of the Emily Wilde series, and had been looking forward this third book since a long time. The end result is decently good, but not great. I did like it, but overall, I am disappointed at how it didn’t live up to the earlier two novels.
While the story does reach an end, the ending seems like it has deliberately left the gates open for another outing. If ever it comes, I wouldn’t say no to another Emily Wilde book. In fact, I hope there is one more book in this series so that I can enjoy it and say goodbye to Emily and Wendell on a better and happier note.
Recommended to those who have read and enjoyed the earlier two novels of this series.
3.25 stars.
4 stars. Strangely comforting yet harrowing, Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales is the most romantic entry of the series to date and serves as a solid, slightly open ending for Emily and Wendell's adventures.
If I one day erupt into uncontrollable screams and go charging into the woods, tearing at my hair, who but Wendell will be to blame?
📍Release Date: February 11, 2025
That was not enough Emily and Wendell, I need more! A novella, at least.
To begin with, I adored the faerie lore in this whole series, and I loved it even more in this book. Heather Fawcett took Irish Folklore to a whole new level. I was blown away by it and the world-building. The plot was also absolutely fantastic. I did not see it taking the direction it did, and I loved it all the more for it. It kept me completely hooked the whole time.
What’s more, Emily Wilde was her usual wonderful genius who could manoeuvre Faerie like it was a Target, even if she felt too human to live among them, especially as their queen. There was literally nothing she couldn’t do, and this book served as the biggest proof of that. She literally had any faerie she wanted eating out of her hand (especially the cute common fae), and that’s just so unfair. I want a cute little faerie too! Real life is so boring! She was as smart as she was a total badass. It’s insane how quickly she became one of my favourite literary characters of all time, but there was no helping it.
As for Wendell, he was as wonderful, hilarious, spoiled, and completely wrapped around Emily’s finger as he had always been. He would hardly ever bother to help anyone with anything (he literally has not changed at all in that aspect) unless they were Emily or Emily asked him to, and honestly, if that isn’t hubby material then I don’t know what is. I loved this crazy diva with my whole heart. In fact, I would fight anyone who disagreed with me. I don’t care if people have a right to their opinion. In this case, they don’t.
Lastly, I couldn’t get over how wholesome and wonderful the relationship between Emily and Wendell was. They couldn’t hide how much they loved and cared about one another even if they tried (Wendell especially wouldn’t bother trying at all). I could watch them worry and fuss about each other forever without getting bored once. Emily fussing and worrying over Wendell was particularly delightful to me, and his constant simping was the most adorable thing ever. Not to mention how feral he became if she was in danger or wronged in any way. My babies are so precious! 🥹💚
I wasn’t joking, though, I need a novella at the very least or I’m gonna let the darkness take me.
“Hand you the right storybook, and you are capable of anything.
this was exactly what i hoped for from book 3!
“It’s been a while since I had so much fun.
“He nearly decapitated you, I exclaimed.
“Yes, but besides that, Em, he said patiently.
we of course get the same banter and delightful dynamic between the ever practical, pragmatic emily and the flamboyant, waggish wendell as they return to wendell's faerie realm to reclaim his place on the throne.
however, it's not a smooth transition as a curse is setting in on the lands. emily must use all her scholarly knowledge to find the answer in the numerous and effervescent fables and tales of faerie to help wendell find a cure and restore balance to the kingdom.
the idea that stories are what hold the true shape of the fae realm, define it, makes me reflect on how stories are how we define our own humanity as people.
“For all you have read about and studied the Folk, you have never truly lived with them, dear. They are like—like nature. Can you understand the feeling of a winter night, or a spring wind, if you have only read about it?
as usual, heather fawcett writes from emily's POV that immediately takes me back into her mind. in fact, i'd read the first two books with audio and i couldn't help but read book three with Ell Potter's voice in my head. she so perfectly encapsulates emily for me and does a great irish accent for wendell, so i highly recommend reading (or rereading) with the audiobooks!
while there's cozy light academia vibe to this series, fawcett never shies away from staying loyal to old school fae lore - that is to say, every now and then a faerie does or says something abruptly brutal that reminds me even the friendliest of them are not to be fully trusted. you must always stay on your feet and ten steps ahead with the tricky fae.
“Most of them have fled,
“Or they’ve been killed, Lord Taran said. “Oops.
something that i found especially pleasant in this installment was the romance felt a touch dialed up. not too much as we know emily is not the most emotionally driven of characters, but it was quite heartfelt at times and called for considering the circumstances. it was in a subtle fashion, but nonetheless enjoyable.
“Don’t tarry here too long, he murmured against my lips. “I shall miss you too much, and come to regret this.
A world that I wanted, even after all I had seen, and amidst such a thicket of danger. I wanted it very much. And I especially wanted to share it with Wendell.
“I have learned there is one thing a person never tires of, no matter how long they live. And that is being in love. All else is ash and ember.
i thought this was a final book of the series, and while it ends wrapped up, there is definitely room for more - i'm certainly hoping there is!
just in case you wanted to know dog or cat-wise: don't worry, nothing happens to them :)
an honest arc review
3.5 stars.
I enjoyed the book but found myself a little disappointed in the end because I was really hoping to love it wholeheartedly. This series has always meant a lot to me, and as I dove into this final installment of the trilogy, I was so excited for it to be the highlight of my reading year. However, it just didn't meet the high expectations I had set.
It might be that I built it up too much in my mind. There was something about this book that felt a bit off—maybe it was a lack of that spark I had come to expect. The narrative didn't quite capture my attention like the first two books did, which was a bummer.
Let's talk about the plot: I found it to be kind of slow at times, and there were moments when I lost interest. Just when things finally started to pick up, the action would wrap up quickly, leaving me wanting more. The central plot didn't feel as strong as I hoped, and I have to admit I chuckled at some of the resolutions, but not always for the right reasons. I was looking forward to more intricate and engaging political maneuvers, but it felt a bit ordinary this time around.
As for the characters, I didn’t click with many of the side characters; they just didn’t resonate with me. Taran, Callum, Orga, Shadow, and Snowbell (who I adore for his unique charm) stood out, but the rest felt a bit forgettable. I struggled to remember any distinctive traits or memorable moments involving them.
Wendell was delightful as usual! His character development was compelling and really shone through. He was the standout character for me, and I loved his journey by the end. I could go on about my love for him but we would be here forever.
On the flip side, Emily didn’t quite live up to my expectations this time. It felt like she lost some of the charm and depth that I loved so much in earlier books. I think it was cause she was trying too hard to fit a certain image, or perhaps she just didn’t seem as confident. I struggled to connect with her and found myself a bit frustrated in some moments. Although the story positioned her as the heroine, I felt like she didn’t make quite the impact I had hoped for, which was a little disappointing.
While she is responsible for saving the day, to me, it felt like she didn't do all that much.
As for the romance, I was hoping for more of that intense chemistry we saw between Emily and Wendell before. While Wendell’s love for Emily was clear and consistent, it felt like Emily wasn’t quite matching his intensity, which was a letdown.
Wendell is, for sure, the perfect love interest. He really is a green forest.
Overall, I wished Emily would have shone more in her role, whether it was as a queen or in solving the problems in this book. It’s a bit sad for me to say that this book didn’t end up being the grand finale I imagined; it was just okay and left me longing for a bit more.
This wasn’t a 5-star read for me, but I nonetheless really enjoyed this book and the series as a whole. It’s such a comfort read.
The author managed to create a very immersive world that draws you in so easily every time.
She also created a great cast of characters. I liked all of them and I loved Emily. She has a very distinct voice and character. She’s complex, and I love how she grows over the course of this series and starts to open up more.
Also side note, Emily is 31 (or something) and also acts like it which really stood out to me because I read so many books lately in which the fmc are supposed to be around that age and then act like they’re barely 18.. 🙄 So that was a nice change.
The reason for the 3 stars is that for me this kind of story doesn’t completely hit the spot. The stakes just weren’t that high or at least never felt that high to me and that made it a bit boring sometimes. But on the other hand, that’s probably what makes it a perfect comfort read.
All in all, I think this was a lovely conclusion to the series, but also my least favourite out of the three.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales is an enchanting conclusion to this trilogy. Though none of the books in this series have been completely cozy, this final installment takes on a more anxious, melancholy tone as Emily and Wendell explore a darker world.
I love the way Heather Fawcett weaves faerie lore throughout this series and I enjoy exploring a new side of the magic in each installment. Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales immerses Emily and the reader in the world of Faerie more than ever before. I really enjoyed exploring Faerie from Emily’s perspective. Her scholarly nature meant she was intrigued by everything but she was human enough to notice the dark, unsettling nature of the world.
I love Emily and Wendell’s relationship so much. It feels real and complex while also being heartwarming and endearing. I just love that the foundation of their relationship is that they both love and accept each other for who they are. The fact that everyone but Emily is low-key terrified of Wendell is so entertaining.
I do wish we had spent a bit more time with Wendell in this installment. The plot kept them apart more than in the previous books. Though the relationship is “built at this point in the series, I still would have liked some more cute, coupley moments between them. The moments that we did get were incredible. However, this ties into my feeling that the book could have benefitted from slowing down occasionally.
The pacing was this installment’s biggest weakness and it really weakened the plot. The story felt like it couldn't sit still, trying to fit in too many different storylines without spending enough time on significant plot moments. I didn’t love that the entire plot was motivated by this connection to stories and the idea of stories repeating themselves. Perhaps I’m missing a connection to previous installments, but it felt like a weak basis for the plot at times. The entire last arc of the story felt completely unnecessary and contrived. This page time could have been better used to flesh out other character arcs or to give more time and weight to other plot moments.
I would read twelve more of these books. This series perfectly balances a charming romance and whimsical world-building with just enough tension and darkness to keep you hooked.
Thank you Del Rey for the ARC
This was such an amazing ending to this series! I honestly wish that there would be more books in this series because I’m not ready to say goodbye!! The romance was even more better in this one, I could not get enough of Emily and Wendell. The things he done for her had me swooning. The protectiveness as well like where can I find a man like him?? No one warned me that Wendell letters would have me yearning for more. Like this man wrote her letters!! Please can someone write me a letter. This is one of the series that honestly brings me so much cosiness and happiness that I don’t want to say goodbye to any of the characters.
For all you have read about and studied the Folk, you have never truly lived with them, dear. They are like nature. Can you understand the feeling of a winter night, or a spring wind, if you have only read about it?
Someone hold my hand and tell me there’ll be a fourth one! Lie to me if you must, and I will love you forever! I seem to have developed Wendell’s flair for melodrama.
˚₊ ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Something I realized is that these books, slow-paced as they are, are not meant to be devoured quickly. You need to take your time with them, reading each sentence carefully and letting yourself process it if you wish to understand the beauty embedded within. In my review of the previous book, I mentioned something ‘missing. Well, apparently, nothing was really missing—except for my patience. I just needed to relax and let myself slowly absorb this piece of art.
When I reread this series in the future (and I have determined that I shall), I will be sure to give it the respect it so deserves instead of trying to hurry through it.
But you are wrong in one thing: I was thinking of you, Em. You were my first thought, as well as my last.
˚₊ ͟͟͞͞➳❥ You know, Wendell fulfilled my every need in this book. I feel as if with each installment, the curtains to his personality are drawn back a little more. At first, he was an annoying, useless, pretty boy in my eyes. Then, he was amusing and adorable and so very protective. And now? Now, he’s most definitely a figment of my wildest imagination.
Where do I even start?!
The Folk in Emily Wilde series are known to be arrogant, self-centered, and governed by their own capricious whims. At first, that was all I saw, and so I was annoyed with him. But now I see that while he is all those things, when it comes to his Emily, he’s so much more.
 The way he’s constantly simping.
 The way he lights up whenever he sees her.
 The way he beams when she takes an interest in his matters.
 The way he respects her and would never cross her boundaries, no matter how much he suffers for it.
 The freaking way he misses her with every bone in his body and writes her letters every single day she’s away (I’m not kidding—she was gone for 14 days, and she got 14 letters from him).
 The way he holds her close and cries because he thought he would never see her again.
 The way his priority—his first and last thoughts—are always of her.
 The way he leaves no stone unturned to ensure her happiness, so much so that he was willing to give up his home, his throne, just so she would be happy.
All I want is Wendell. Give me Wendell. WHERE CAN I ORDER WENDELL?!
˚₊ ͟͟͞͞➳❥ One thing I found hilarious:
Wendell: I haven’t the heart for brutality or violence.
Also Wendell: Wendell knocked the wraith’s weapon aside and drove his sword into her chest. Then he drove it in again. And again. The way he goes FERAL when anybody hurts his Emily.
If I one day erupt into uncontrollable screams and go charging into the woods, tearing at my hair, who but Wendell will be to blame?
˚₊ ͟͟͞͞➳❥ In the meantime, our girl Emily has been going through shit. She’s a scholar. A very socially awkward, curmudgeonly scholar. Certainly not ready to be a queen! (Though Wendell, with a starry-eyed look, would disagree.)
Often, surrounded by the faeries, she feels so in over her head. She sees them looking, with disdain, with condescension, and sometimes, she wants to leave. Leave this beautiful, terrifying realm and go back to her office at Cambridge. And Wendell is always so sensitive to her moods, so ready to meet her needs. He’s so attentive and focused on her, all the damn time, that he instantly notices whenever she’s feeling off and does whatever he can to make her feel at ease. Just look:
“I’m all right, I said.
“Em, he said, leaning close, “even the most fire-breathing of dragons is allowed to tire of its occupation sometimes.
He lets her know it’s okay to not always feel alright. It’s okay to be exhausted. That it doesn’t make her weak or any less for it. And I’m just ready to bang my head on a wall because he isn’t real.
˚₊ ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Another thing nobody asked for but that I’m still going to tell you—I teared up twice while reading this book. Isn’t that so exciting? I love books that wrangle emotions out of me!
˚₊ ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Random thought: Don’t you just love it when the FMC’s friends actually respect her choices and trust her judgment? I mean, I liked that they were concerned about her being with Wendell—y’know, the Folk are cruel and heartless, so you must be wary of them. But I also liked that they never pushed it. Like, Emily is a grown woman in her thirties who can make her own decisions, and everyone actually respects that.
As my review nears its conclusion, enjoy this little exchange between our Emily and Wendell:
“It’s been a while since I had so much fun.
“He nearly decapitated you! I exclaimed.
“Yes, but besides that, Em, he said patiently.
Ughhh I loved this! A perfect ending to the trilogy!!
I know it's not a trilogy for everyone because it's written differently but I LOOOVED them! And now I miss it 😭 this world and the characters are like a small comfort zone for me that I can just escape to !
My only complaint is that I felt like Emily was more downplayed? But honestly it didn't bother me too much. Because I honestly see her as neurodivergent. There was a lot of stress on our girl this book 😭!! So I understand the way she acted<3
Wendell, I can't say much except he's perfect, is a little of a pushover?? Ngl yes but it's not sooo bad, I think he's just head over heels here. I loved Wendell's character throughout each book and I need a man like him! Like My GOD THOSEEE LETTERS!?! also his personality was just muah! I love me a dramatic flamboyant fairy boy.
The side characters as usual I adored they're all so different and creative and... Weird 😭. But I love it! Especially my boy shadow 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️!!!
I can say, that the plotline in this one was a little confusing and hard to follow for me slightly but in the end I did understand most of it so it doesn't more me that badly!
I'm going to miss these books 😭
One Liner: Oh, Emily!
Emily and Wendell (with some reinforcements) enter his kingdom to stake claim to the throne. Of course, it’s not easy. Emily, with all her scholarly interest in the fae world, doesn’t feel comfortable being a queen. However, she has no time to deal with this. Wendell’s stepmother has placed a curse on the kingdom. They need to use all her knowledge and Wendell’s powers to break the curse and save the kingdom.
The story comes in Emily’s first-person (through her journal writings).
My Thoughts:
Well, I’ve been excited to read this since I finished book #2. I had to wait for a while but I did get approved for the ARC and then planned a buddy read with Rosh (we read the previous books together). Sadly, the results are mixed.
The book takes off where the second one ends (though it took me some time to remember that part). Anyway, I soon got into the setting and the mood. The stakes were high this time, and I was ready for a lot of danger and action.
Somehow, the pacing was decent for the first 10% and then became slower than a snail. Since the previous two were also slow, I was sort of used to it. It does get better in the last quarter.
There’s some action here and there with Wendell showcasing his swordsmanship. However, it is not as much as I hoped for.
But my major disappointment comes from the execution of the premise. The stepmother’s curse, fighting her, etc., should have been more gripping and engaging. Instead, we get a mild version (the whole book has YA vibes) with more focus on scholarly research than actual implementation.
Balancing both elements might have helped. The action, when it takes place, is short and over in a few paragraphs. Easy peasy and convenient!
Instead of having so many developments and rushing through them with easy solutions, there should have been one or two tension-filled dark scenes with details.
For a book with such high stakes, the approach is more of a cozy fantasy. This was supposed to be the last of the trilogy, but I feel there will be more books. Even the open-ish ending (also lukewarm) gives the same feeling.
What with Emily and Wendell being a couple, we don’t get much banter either. Also, they don’t spend time together much. The only highlight of this is Wendell’s letters to Emily. Those were adorable.
Shadow and Orga were cool (Orga was a lot more fun). Poe had a tiny role but shined in it. Snowball had more space and brought some laughs. Not sure about say about Deilah’s character either. What was the purpose? It would make sense if there was another book with her having some role. She couldn’t have been only for comic relief surely?
To summarize, Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales wasn’t as good as the previous books but managed to be a decent read. I like it okay but man, I wanted so much more! Might as well give us book four next.
Thank you, NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group (Del Rey), for eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
One day faerie cats shall rule the world. And that is a scientifically proven fact.
Oh, and also:
Faerie snails hell-bent on revenge + sewing kits as weapons of mass destruction terrorization + a cloak that grumbles and growls, and wants to eat everybody (it has a healthy appetite, you see) - too many 💤💤💤 moments - characters who spoiler spoiler spoiler should STAY SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER - conflictive and vindictive protagonists who turn into goody-two-shoes - HEA of Doom and Destruction (these should be outlawed, if you ask me) = this definitely wasn't as good as previous installments in the series.
This is Orga being slightly disenchanted after reading this book, just so you know.
A book that absolutely sticks the landing for the Emily Wilde trilogy. It gives everything that the first two did, and fans of those will enjoy this.
I loved how this one really asked the question of what it means for Emily to commit to living in the faerie realm. I also appreciated the emphasis on scholarship and research in the middle of the battling and power struggles.
Thanks to Netgalley and Del Rey for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Despite never reading it before, as soon as I started this final installment (to my knowledge, anyway; Fawcett hasn't ever said anything but that it'll be a trilogy) I felt a total sense of cozy nostalgia I think everyone’s aware by now about my excessive love for this series (and I’ve heard the audiobooks enough that I automatically heard the voices and cadence of the narrators in my head, even though I was reading this as an eARC).
Compendium of Lost Tales picks up where Map of the Otherlands left off, with the characters entering Where The Trees Have Eyes.
From the beginning, the animal companions have a much larger presence than they’ve had in prior books (Orga, my love!). There’s also a much more traditional plot structure and pacing, with very few divergences. On the one hand I think this might better suit people who found the first book composed of too many vignettes and an unfocused story, on the other hand I felt a stronger sense of lull between major story beats than in prior books. However Fawcett never failed to delight me with all of the little world-building details, so -from vengeful battle snails to adorable butter fairies- I was always entertained.
And I know we all talk about the cozy vibes, the banter, the romance, the academia, and the animal companions in this series-- but man are there also a lot of swordfights, now that I think about it. This volume definitely did not disappoint on that front.
I’d have to say my largest disappointment was the way the story often kept Emily and Wendell apart, since their playful banter is probably my #1 favourite thing. There were also fewer instances to see fae friends from prior novels than I was expecting, and I didn’t really feel like new friends were made to fill that gap.
But there are several satisfying call-backs and full circle moments that I adored (including one that made me shout “aw, snap! aloud in the dark startling my cats). And though I think I’ll continue to re-read the first book in the series the most (a not uncommon occurrence for me and series anyway), I’ll truly treasure all the joy that this series has brought me and continue to re-read it many times in future.
« And what sort of queen would that make me?
- Mine. » ❤️‍
I simply cannot believe this series is over. It has secured its place into one of my favourite series of all time.
Heartwarming, wholesome, nostalgic I cannot get enough of this series.
Thinking I will never again read something like this saddens me in a way I find impossible to put into words.
I love the characters so much. Wendell respects towards Emily knows no bounds 🥹. I was so happy to read about Lilja, Margret, Rose, Ariadne & Poe 🥹.
Niamh, Callum & Taran were such wonderful additions! Shadow & Orga 😻
Wendell’s gift to Em😭 I was sobbing. This has got to be the best gift ever.
« You were my first thought, as well as my last. » 🥺
omg I feel like this book was made just for me. I don’t even have the words to describe how much I love this world and its characters—every single one of them. It brought me so much joy, like stepping into a story that already felt like home. emily and wendell are everything to me, I have such a deep love and fondness for them, and I could honestly read about their daily lives forever without ever getting bored.
the world itself is pure magic. the details are so vivid that I felt completely transported. the faerie lore was absolutely mesmerizing, Heather Fawcett is truly such an incredible writer.
and then there’s Emily and Wendell. I could talk about them forever. their relationship is everything. Wendell is so ridiculously in love with her, it’s adorable. He admires her so much, believes in her completely, and is just utterly devoted. and Emily, in her own awkward, logical way, loves him just as deeply. she may struggle to understand or express her emotions, but Wendell is the one person she feels completely comfortable with, the one she trusts with her thoughts, her journals—everything.
speaking of Wendell where do I even start? He’s dramatic, spoiled, and has an unparalleled ability to make everything about himself—but when it comes to Emily, he’d do anything. he’s not exactly known for caring about others, but if she asks for something, he’s there in an instant. his love for her is so pure and obvious, and I couldn’t get enough of it. this ridiculous, over-the-top, deeply devoted fae prince has my whole heart. for me he’s one of the best male leads ever written.
their relationship is the sweetest thing. the way they look out for each other is so genuine, and it shows in every little interaction. Wendell wears his affection on his sleeve—subtlety isn’t exactly his strong suit—but what I loved most was seeing Emily be just as protective of him in her own way. and when she’s in danger? Wendell completely loses it, no hesitation. their dynamic is the perfect mix of chaotic and heartwarming, and I could happily read about them forever.
honestly, I just need more Emily and Wendell. A novella. A bonus scene. Anything. I’m not ready to say goodbye to them yet!
4 ⭐️ Emily and Wendell’s banter and bickering will always have a special place in my heart ❤️ The two things I didn’t like about this book were the side characters in my opinion just didn’t get enough of a ending or a conclusion, and I’m definitely more of a high stakes fantasy girl and I’ve never been much of a cozy fantasy girl but with that being said I really did enjoy this series  And I’ll be thinking about Wendell’s letters to Emily for a while. 💖🤭
4,5* rounded up because this might just be my favorite Emily Wilde book ❤️
Oh, what a journey Emily and Wendell's story is! I ADORE this couple so much. Reading about them always makes me smile, and it's exactly what I needed right now. I love their dynamics, Wendell with his magic and whimsical Fae way of thinking (which, to be frank, often results in not thinking much at all 😂), and Emily's hard scientific logic and strategizing. Wendell would truly be in deep shit as a king without Em by his side, I can't even imagine that shitshow...though it's Faerie soo...😅😅
This last installment (?? is it? because I could read many more books about them!) cemented my love for Emily's character. No matter what happens, however desperate she may be, she always falls back to cold logic (in a Fae scientific way of course) to solve a problem others would be too emotional to surpass. That's not to say she's without emotions, oh no! She just has this amazing ability to compartmentalize and put her feelings on the back burner in order to do what needs to be done, but those same emotions are still her motivation.
And don't let me start on Wendell and his absolute, complete ADORATION of Emily, he's so doting and helpless without her I was swooning left and right 😍 He's the embodiment of a green flag ✅️
The plotline was engaging and fairly fast-paced, interesting new characters were introduced (okay but I need Taran and Callum's story!!! Taran is this ancient and powerful Fae who's content to just sit on the sidelines, doting on his mortal husband, and I need more of him ❤️), and all those Fae/animal companions hit my buttons hard 🐕🐈‍⬛🦊🦉
I'm not ready to part ways with this series and will wait patiently for an announcement of at least a novella or two, because there's still so much more to explore!
If you're in the mood for a unique blend of cozy, scientific, and at times downright gory fantasy with a comfortable romance woven in, definitely give Emily Wilde a try ❤️
An absolutely perfect fae-genre fantasy book!
This installment follows Emily and Wendell's progress as they retake his thrown and purge his lands of his step-mother's poisonous curse. Naturally, there are stranger and stranger fae-happenings and so many bizarre creatures Emily encounters and categorizes along the way. What I loved most about book 3 is that it truly brings the characters from all installments together again as Wendell is under threat constantly, and it takes the academic savvy of all to overcome these new threats. If you love books about fairylands, don't miss out on this series. It's original and so much fun.
“I do not deny its usefulness, Niamh said, “but attending too closely to a single story to understand a Faerie realm or its Folk is, as Bennett has argued, fruitless parochialism. Do dryadologists these days ignore his treatise on comparative histories? We must look for patterns.
The third book in the Emily Wilde series, Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales starts with Wendell getting his faerie kingdom back (too easily) and takes off (not quite) with him focusing on being a benevolent ruler while Emily forgets the basic principles of research and literature review relying on just one Tale too literally. Oh also, their relationship progresses.
On the one hand, this book continues with some good world-building with just enough detail asked the protagonists Emily and Wendell remain typically themselves. The premise for this book, and for the series, were interesting and it was fun to see the faerie world from an academic research perspective. The plots didn't really gallop, but had some predictable light romantasy themes.
But, on the other hand...
“Bloody footnotes! I muttered.
The use of the field journal format wasn't very conducive to this story, and pretty soon, the book ceased to be a proper field journal and seemed to be more a real-time narration. The series would have been better served if Emily at least acknowledged her tendency to write personal diary entries. The footnotes unfortunately didn't add much to the story or the world-building - without Susannah Clarke's stoic notes of relevant information or Terry Pratchett's expert deadpan humour.
On the whole, the book is recommended only for following Emily and Wendell's story, to light romantasy readers who enjoyed the first two books.
🌟3/4
[Half a star for the premise and the whole book; 1/4 star for the characters and their growth; 1/4 star for the story and themes; 1/4 star for the writing; Half a star for the world-building - 1 3/4 stars in total.]
