I was going to write a proper review for the book but then I realized that anything I could say would make the story sound boring as fish (👋 waves at Parker 👋), and thought that maybe I'd better refrain.
I mean, it's not likeanything nothing much happens in the book. Also, the MC is an awkward, constantly brooding gargoyle with zero social skills (and no particular interest in interacting with other human beings either). Not to mention that she glares in her sleep (now that's a superpower I'm definitely jealous of).
Also also, the book centers on the silly Fae (and it is a truth universally acknowledged that Ican't stand slightly dislike anything fay/fae/fey/fair folk/faerie-related—which is obviously why I just read three fay/fae/fey/fair folk/faerie/fairy-related stories in a row).
BUT.
The story is delightful as shrimp and has an enchanting, old-fashioned feel about it.
The book is (brilliantly) written as a research journal, complete with footnotes. I mean, footnotes! And they're (miraculously) really easy to navigate on Kindle, too!
The cast of secondary characters is somewhat scrumptious (Bambleby for president!).
 The dialogues are charmingly witty.
Shadow is one of the best canine companions ever (I believe that this is a scientifically proven fact).
There are brownies and bogles and trows and kobolds and boggarts, oh my!
Severed heads abound (hence the high rating).
All in all, you could say that this book was the perfect antidote to The Land of the Living and the Dead (of which I came out scarred for life and quite possibly a little traumatized). And I guess you could also say it was a Slightly Very Good Read (SVGR). Maybe.
 Nefarious Last Words ():
· Book 2: Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands ★★★★
· Book 3: Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales ★★

[Pre-review nonsense]
This book is so NOT action-packed I should have hated it with a vengeance and DNFed it in less time than it takes to say "unleash the crustaceans!" But I didn't.

I know right?
 Review to come and stuff.

Sorry Nataliya, I'm only seeing your comment now! 🙄 How did you miss this, you ask? You read the book wrong, obviously 😬.
