Queria mesmo ter gostado deste livro, desejei-o assim que o vi nas livrarias. Tinha algum receio que pudesse ser uma c贸pia dos temas abordados em "Americanah", mas n茫o 茅, de todo; n茫o tem mesmo qualquer semelhan莽a em estilo ou conte煤do. Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida escreve muit铆ssimo bem, um portugu锚s sem m谩cula, mas para mim n茫o chegou. Ao longo destas 150 p谩ginas (ui, e t茫o esticadinhas que foram pela edi莽茫o) n茫o consegui emocionar-me, ligar-me 脿s personagens ou sequer acompanhar com prazer as perip茅cias relatadas ou as reflex玫es filos贸ficas. E foi isso que foi faltando: paix茫o e vontade de querer continuar a ler. Ainda assim, atribuo 3 estrelas, pelo 9.潞 cap铆tulo (do qual gostei muito) e porque, apesar de n茫o me ter entrosado, sinto-me na obriga莽茫o de reconhecer a qualidade liter谩ria.

With the hands of a gardener and his nails trimmed by razor blade, my Grandpa Castro would wash my Grandma Maria's hair, its long and silver strands, years on end, always leaving behind some shampoo that the low water pressure was no help in removing.
When I abandoned my effort of trying to experience this brief novel as a coherent narrative about halfway through, I was able to more fully enjoy the pleasures of interesting sentences and paragraphs I encountered along the way, as if they were images glimpsed from a bus in Lisbon or a walk in Luanda.
It is for this reason that I say this book was composed methodically, recapitulating the only story that I feel in the right to tell, the story, known to some, of the looks African women exchange when they cross on Lisbon streets, studying one another's hairdos, clothes, boyfriends-and, every now and then, exchanging smiles. As do the little girls being dragged along by mothers weighed down by shopping bags.
The stream-of-consciousness, fictionalized memoir of a biracial Angolan/Portuguese woman meanders through a lifetime of coming to terms with her curly hair, her bicontinental life, family history, popular culture, philosophy, and more, creating and bending its genre as it goes.
It's often said that everything happens for a reason, but this is nothing more than a way for human horror to grapple with injustice. There's a pettiness in our needing to learn that justice does not exist, pettiness in the sense of being proportional to our minority position vis-a-vis the grandiose scale of the world around us. If injustice results from the lack of meaning in the events that happen to us and that we have trouble accepting, it also offers the possibility of staking a claim to a certain share of grace in our lives. For this reason, redemption resides not in our finding a meaning for everything but in the possibility of wonder in the face of the grace to be found in the arbitrary. And yet the path is not open to us to seek it.

H谩 uns tempos ouvi o epis贸dio do podcast Cruzamentos Liter谩rios com Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida, e gostei tanto que resolvi conhecer a obra da autora. Antes de me aventurar nas duas obras premiadas, e , achei por bem come莽ar por este pequeno livro.
Djaimilia escreve muito bem, num portugu锚s irrepreens铆vel e com um toque po茅tico, mas s贸 isso n茫o chega para dar interesse 脿 hist贸ria.
Esse cabelo 茅 mais do que o cabelo crespo da Mila, 茅 sobre adapta莽茫o, aceita莽茫o, racismo, quest玫es de identidade (birracial), colonialismo, enfim鈥� assuntos na ordem do dia, mas que n茫o conseguiram ter o impacto pretendido.
脡 um romance, mas pareceu-me um colet芒nea de cr贸nicas cuja estrutura dificulta a concentra莽茫o no texto.
Visitar sal玫es tem sido um modo de visitar pa铆ses e aprender a distinguir fei莽玫es e maneiras, renovando preconceitos. O Senegal s茫o umas m茫os hidratadas, Angola um certo desmazelo, uma gra莽a brutal, o Zaire um desastre, Portugal uma queimadura de secador, um arranh茫o de escova.

A escrita 茅 de excel锚ncia, mas isso j谩 sab铆amos, j谩 o tinha tentado ler quando saiu e tinha adorado a sua enorme arte no manejo da l铆ngua. Por outro lado, a estrutura el铆ptico-fragmentada que exige de n贸s uma forte motiva莽茫o n茫o foi suficientemente alimentada pelo tema proposto 鈥� a jovem vida da autora entre Angola e Portugal.
Fui lendo agarrado 脿 l铆rica que continuo a admirar, mas senti-me sempre distante do mundo da autora.

Iniciei #mar莽ofeminino com a leitura deste livro. Tem uma excelente qualidade liter谩ria e apesar de me identificar com alguns acontecimentos da vida da narradora, tive sempre a sensa莽茫o de estar a ler um di谩rio, demasiado 铆ntimo para ser lido assim... 茅 uma escrita excelente e uma hist贸ria que incomoda.

Este final de ano tem-me reservado surpresas fant谩sticas. Esse Cabelo agarrou-me pelo espanto. Desde a primeira linha que me espantei, e maravilhei, com a escrita incr铆vel de Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida. Pegando no seu pr贸prio cabelo como tema, desenvolve a hist贸ria da sua vida e da sua fam铆lia com uma mestria surpreendente. Complexo e desafiante, Esse Cabelo vale pela excel锚ncia da forma. A hist贸ria 茅 boa mas, apesar de ainda n茫o ter lido Americanah da Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie, desconfio que n茫o seja original. Mas tenho a certeza, apesar de gostar muito da Chimamanda, que esta tem um caminho a percorrer at茅 chegar ao n铆vel liter谩rio de Djaimilia.
Mais do que uma hist贸ria dos dissabores vividos nos sal玫es de cabeleireiro, ou mesmo, nas esp茅cies de cabeleireiros em v茫o de escada, fica a vida dentro da cabe莽a da dona do cabelo. Desde a crian莽a observadora cujas mem贸rias ainda fervilham e s茫o surpreendentemente contadas pela adulta, at茅 ao dif铆cil que pode ser crescer.
O cabelo 茅 transversal a todo livro, como um fio condutor de mem贸rias. Os seus fios passam por mudan莽as, sofrem, crescem e s茫o cortados. O que se passa do lado de fora da cabe莽a pode ser um reflexo do que se passa l谩 dentro?
Um livro curto que se l锚 num f么lego, mas complexo ao ponto de obrigar 脿 releitura das passagens mais bicudas, que apetece desembara莽ar com paci锚ncia, como um n贸 no cabelo, um emaranhado de ideias que tem de ser deslindado e que 茅 urgente compreender.

This semi-aut0biographical novel about a young woman's experience coming to terms with her biracial (Portuguese/Angolan) identity told with focus on her hairstyles and haircuts is something of a mixed bag. On one hand, Pereira should be applauded for her honesty and admirable introspection. Also, this book is an exploration of her relationships with various family members, especially her grandparents, and that is touching. Finally, the book offers a nuanced look at the relationship between Angolans and their former colonists, the Portuguese. I have studied some areas of Africa extensively, but not Angola, so I learned a lot while reading this book, especially about Portuguese who chose to stay in Angola and Angolans who settled in Lisbon.
Despite all of these strong points, there was one major problem with this book for me: the writing. I am a trained Spanish-English translator and interpreter, and I know that sometimes it is difficult to make the language flow well in English. Spanish, like Portuguese, as the translator of this book notes, permits sentences that are a LOT longer than what we typically write in English. So, we as translators have two options: break the text into small chunks, which will allow for a more English-sounding translation, or respect the syntax of the original text, which might lead to sentences that are awkward and clunky as well as long. The latter happened with this book, making it hard to follow, which was compounded by a highbrow, literary, vocabulary and gave the book a philosophical tone. Some readers may love this aspect of the book, but I did not. I have to say, though, it depends what you are looking for.
I think most readers will learn a lot and think deeply from reading this book, about issues of identity, colonialism and race. However, if you are expecting a compelling plot, this is not the book for you.

I don't have much to say about this novel because I could barely get through the first chapter. The premise is intriguing but the execution is painful. It's to the point that I feel the author is trying too hard to have lyrical and complex prose and the end result is a convoluted mess that failed to grab me.

Em Esse Cabelo, a angolana Djamilia Pereira de Almeida, combina mem贸rias, ensaio, narrativa para resgatar sua hist贸ria a partir da hist贸ria de seu pr贸prio cabelo. 脡 um livro desafiador, seja na forma proposta pela autora ou no conte煤do, que lidar谩 com sagacidade temas como o racismo e o feminismo. A autora faz uma esp茅cie de hist贸ria cultural sobre di谩logos e a compreens茫o do outro e aceita莽茫o de si mesmo em plenitude por suas diferen莽as e especificidades. 鈥淧osso at茅 aprender a pentear-me, mas n茫o posso por茅m faz锚-lo na pele de outra pessoa鈥�.
Escrito num tom que beira uma conversa com o leitor, a prosa de Esse Cabelo 茅 despojada de artif铆cios, e, portanto, bastante sincera. A nostalgia do passado, da inf芒ncia, da mudan莽a da fam铆lia de Luanda para Lisboa 茅 um ponto de investiga莽茫o aqui. O humor de Djamilia lhe 茅 peculiar e inteligente. 脡 o olhar da mulher que v锚 a crian莽a que foi com carinho. 鈥淎 inf芒ncia me reservou uma s茅rie de Carnavais 茅tnicos鈥�. I couldn鈥檛 finish it. The prose were scattered and there was no cohesiveness to what I was reading. I didn鈥檛 feel as if there was an overall story being built here. It was more like a patchwork of talking about the narrator鈥檚 experiences with her natural hair and then suddenly shifting to her family鈥檚 history. It just seemed a bit haphazard and didn鈥檛 hold my interest/attention.
I gave it an extra star because the premise is relatable. It鈥檚 part of why I was looking forward to reading this. As someone who straddles two cultures, like the narrator, and having the experience of my hair being 鈥渦nruly鈥�, 鈥渕essy鈥�, 鈥渘appy鈥�, and only considered beautiful when straight (like my Asian relatives or white friends), I felt a connection to her questions of her own identity and, as a mixed race woman, how she navigates connecting with two different cultures when on the surface she is physically different from the people she鈥檚 surrounded by in Lisbon.
Maybe I鈥檒l finish it at some point.

I want to start off this review by saying, I haven't read a lot of Portuguese fiction and I'm usually wary of translated works,
My expectations weren't met for this memoir and that's ok. I expected a lot more societal commentary and reflections on how the personal is political. However, in this piece, Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida focuses on hair as a trait that's passed down from one's gene. It was more of a familial and genetic exploration and observance with hair being a lens or narrative anchor.
The organization of the memoir is different from what I'm accustomed to. It felt like a lot of stories spanning several generations. It is interesting anecdotally and it felt like someone telling you their family history.

Este t铆tulo j谩 me tinha despertado a aten莽茫o. No entanto, ficou muito aqu茅m do que eu esperava. Bem escrito (quase demasiado bem escrito para o que conta), perde o rumo e ficamos sem ideias completas. Mila conta a hist贸ria da sua fam铆lia atrav茅s de fases do seu cabelo, relacionando-o com a sua heran莽a africana. Gostaria que contasse de facto mais hist贸rias.

Este libro non era para min. Quizais sexa porque non comparto as claves de contexto cultural e xeracional, pero non entend铆n en ning煤n momento que quer铆a contar a autora. Honestly this book just didn't land for me. I think I might be missing a cultural aspect of the book. Maybe there was some thing lost in translation. There was a weird disconnect and it took so long to end. It could have easily been a novella or a think-piece on medium.

It's not the book. It's me. I struggle to enjoy and comprehend books written in the stream of consciousness style. The sentences sound lovely, but the complex grammar of Portugese sentence structure becomes confusing in English. I don't think I really understand this book. I understand chapters and phrases, but not the work as a whole. Perhaps I would get more out of it on subsequent readings, but I'm also not entirely sure I want to read it again. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if I'd read it with other people so we could discuss it together.

A ideia base 茅 muito interessante: contar a pr贸pria hist贸ria atrav茅s da hist贸ria do cabelo. S贸 que esta narrativa 茅-me muito pouco familiar (em todos os aspectos), o que n茫o 茅 necessariamente um problema, mas quando n茫o sinto afinidade pela hist贸ria nem pelas personagens, sinto alguma dificuldade em gostar do livro. A hist贸ria tem ideias que eu gostava de explorar mais: a import芒ncia do cabelo para as mulheres africanas de que a Chimamanda tamb茅m fala e a import芒ncia da identidade, da nossa procura por quem somos: "o que se encontra reconfigura o que se procura".

That Hair is about so much more than the title suggests. It's about politics, history, family and identity. Rather than taking center focus in the story, Almeida's hair is the heartbeat. The same way some parents document their child's "firsts" (first steps, first words, first day of school, first crush, etc), hairstyles are the pulses by which Alameida marks her own personal growth. The story jumps around a lot: in one moment we're reading about when Almeida-- bullied into believing her hair is ugly and unmanageable-- gets a relaxer; in the next moment she's recounting a time when she brushes her grandmother's hair and realizes it's the only place that feels like "home."
Being both Portuguese and Angolan, Alameida grew up feeling neither African nor European. In Portugal, her curly hair was considered undesirable; it was evidence of her "dirty" blood. In Angola, the texture and curl pattern made it immediately obvious she is not fully Black. Through flashbacks, we witness forces on both sides of her family accepting and rejecting parts of her while she tries to reconcile the disparate pieces of her identity. We also learn about the most important people in life and how her hair relates to when/how she knew those people.
That Hair explains, or attempts to explain, why many people in minority groups insist that it's not "just hair" for us. Alameida implicitly describes how the forces of European colonialism and imperialism have led droves of African women to hair salons in an attempt to maintain eurocentric beauty standards. I appreciated that the story didn't end with a neat conclusion. While Alameida is clearly more comfortable with herself at the end of the book, she admits that she doesn't have it all figured out and that there are people with a better relationship to their hair. Still, she is committed to simply being present, so that younger women can see her and realize that they, too, belong.
The translation is quite artful. In the translator's note (which I highly recommend reading), Becker explains that the Portuguese writing style is totally opposite to the English writing style. Because I can't speak or read Portuguese, I can't comment on how accurate the translation is, but the prose itself was beautiful. My only complaint is that the book was very short. I enjoyed the reasoning behind the lack of conclusion, but it seemed to end rather abruptly. Other than that, I liked it.

Queria muito ter gostado desse livro, j谩 que o tema me interessava muito. N茫o tive a experi锚ncia de mais de um continente, mas eu tamb茅m minhas hist贸rias de cabelo ao longo dos anos. Eu me identifiquei com algumas partes, como quando ela descreve os passeios por Lisboa, o cabelo da av贸, a novela Tieta, os f茫s de Nirvana, mas 茅 tudo muito solto, e no final eu fiquei sem saber pra onde o livro tinha ido. Queria saber mais da fam铆lia dela, e queria que os temas fossem mais conectados. Me pareceu mais um rascunho que um livro pronto.

That Hair is a story centering more on the cultural experience of darker skinned Afro-Latinos (Latinas, or Latinix), than on actual hair texture. Eye opening, this book shows us that although we may not be near each other on the globe, the problem of colorism still exists in different forms everywhere. Translated into English from another language, there are times when certain phrases or word pairings don鈥檛 make complete sense to the American mind, but the book is chock full of context clues that help with decipher what is what.

Ideia excelente de hist贸ria, mas definitivamente n茫o 茅 o tipo de livro pra mim. Uma escrita que beira a erudita e cheia de filosofia, ent茫o o que era pra ser uma hist贸ria de vida de uma angolana em Portugal contada por meio do cabelo acaba se tornando algo lento e sem ritmo.
Doses de lirismo, numa prosa bastante rebuscada e que, pro meu gosto, fica chata e cansativa. Uma pena.

Nel risvolto di copertina, Maaza Mengiste (autrice di un romanzo superlativo che consiglio: Il re ombra) definisce questo lavoro 鈥渦na storia ironica鈥�. A dire il vero, non sono riuscita a cogliere l鈥檌ronia a cui si riferisce mentre leggevo le riflessioni di Mila, che sono una via di mezzo tra un memoir, una biografia ed un romanzo postcoloniale. Cosa c鈥檈ntrano i capelli?
Mila 猫 arrivata in Portogallo a tre anni da Luanda, col padre portoghese, ed 猫 cresciuta a Lisbona coi nonni portoghesi. I suoi capelli crespi ed indomiti sono il segno della sua 鈥渁fricanit脿鈥�, delle sue origini. Origini che tenta di ricostruire attraverso immagini - foto e filmini - della sua famiglia, ripercorrendo memorie di quattro generazioni e due continenti. Ma la sua memoria, e quella collettiva, sono labili quando di mezzo ci sono due culture diverse.
Nel flusso di coscienza che 猫 questo lavoro, la domanda principale 猫: che cosa significa non appartenere realmente a nessun luogo? 脠 la difficolt脿 degli immigrati che vivono in bilico tra la cultura della propria famiglia e quella del luogo in cui sono cresciuti. Sono riflessioni di sottrazione, soprattutto quando si ragiona sul fatto di essere degli stranieri per paese che li ha accolti e diventare degli stranieri per il paese d鈥檕rigine. Nel suo caso, africana per il Portogallo e portoghese per l鈥橝ngola - anche se lei, in realt脿 猫 gi脿 per met脿 portoghese. Ma i suoi capelli sono l矛 a ricordare a molti che viene dalle colonie.
La partenza che ha scelto 猫 piuttosto confusa, si fatica ad inquadrare i vari componenti della famiglia di Mila, e si fatica anche a seguire i suoi ragionamenti legati alla ricerca e alla memoria. Probabilmente 猫 una scelta voluta, per enfatizzare la difficolt脿 di ricostruire le proprie origini, o di capire chi si 猫, quando il passato 猫 poco chiaro. Resta il fatto che ho avuto difficolt脿 a seguire il filo dei suoi pensieri disorganici e, sembrano, estemporanei; come se il flusso seguisse una logica che rimaneva solo nella sua mente.
Per fortuna gli ultimi capitoli tirano le fila delle pagine precedenti e si capisce che finalmente, dopo che era riuscita a riappacificarsi con i suoi capelli (non 猫 una frivolezza, 猫 un鈥檌mmagine potente, soprattutto se avete letto Americanah di Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie), Mila ha capito chi 猫.
Bonus: la prosa. Nonostante la caotica ricostruzione del suo passato, Pereira de Almeida ha una prosa ricercata, complessa e per nulla banale.
