रागदरबारी एक ऐस� उपन्या� है जो गांव की कथ� के माध्यम से आधुनिक भारती� जीवन की मूल्यहीनत� अनावृत करता है� शुरू से आखिर तक � ने निस्सं� और सौददेश्य व्यंगय के सा� हिंदी का शायद यह पहला उपन्या� है�
फिरभी रा� दरबारी व्यंग्�-कथ� नही� है� इसका समबन्ध एक एड़े नग� से कु� दू� बे� हु� गांव की ज़िन्दगन� वर्ष� की प्रगति और विका� के नारो� के बावजूद निहि� स्वार्थो और अनेक अवांक्षनी� तत्वों के सामन� ज़िन्दगी के दस्तावेज� हैं।

श्रीला� शुक्� का व्यक्तित्व अपनी मिसा� आप था� सह� लेकि� सतर्�, विनोदी लेकि� विद्वा�, अनुशासनप्रिय लेकि� अराजक। श्रीला� शुक्लअंग्रेज़ी,उर्द�,संस्कृतऔरहिन्दीभाषा के विद्वा� थे� श्रीला� शुक्लसंगीतक� शास्त्री� और सुगम दोनो� पक्षों के रसिक-मर्मज्� थे� 'कथाक्र�' समारोह समित� के वह अध्यक्� रहे। श्रीला� शुक्� जी ने गरीबी झेली, संघर्ष किया, मग� उसके विला� से लेखन को नही� भरा। उन्हें नई पीढ़ी भी सबसे ज़्याद� पढ़ती है� वे नई पीढ़ी को सबसे अधिक समझन� और पढ़न� वाले वरिष्ठ रचनाकारो� मे� से एक रहे। � पढ़न� और लिखन� के लि� लो� सैद्धांतिकी बनात� हैं। श्रीला� जी का लिखन� और पढ़न� रुका तो स्वास्थ्� के गंभी� कारणों के चलते� श्रीला� शुक्� का व्यक्तित्व बड़ा सह� था� वह हमेश� मुस्कुराकर सबका स्वागत करते थे� लेकि� अपनी बा� बिना ला�-लपेट कहते थे� व्यक्तित्व की इसी ख़ूबी के चलते उन्होंने सरकारी सेवा मे� रहते हु� भी व्यवस्था पर करारी चो� करने वालीरा� दरबारीजैसी रचना हिंदी साहित्� को दी�

It'd have been unfair if I wrote an English review of this novel prior to the Hindi one; so yes, a Hindi review is followed by an English counterpart.

इस पुस्तक मे� श्रीला� शुक्� जी ने ग्रा� जीवन और ग्रामी� राजनैतिक तौ� तरीको� का विस्तारपूर्व� चित्रण किया है� खा� बा� यह है कि यह वर्ण� बेहद सटी� और व्यंग्यात्मक है |
मैने� हिंदी के कु� 4-5 उपन्या� ही पढ़े है�, और मुझे संतो� है कि उनमे से रा� दरबारी है� श्रीला� जी ने ज़मीनी स्तर पर भारती� राजनीति का उललेखनी� वर्ण� किया है | समकाली� यु� मे� भी, जि� तर� से ग़बन, वंशवाद, एव� भ्रष्टाचार की जडें मज़बूत होती जा रही है�, उसी प्रकार आज से 50 वर्ष से भी पूर्� का यह उपन्या� और अधिक प्रासंगि� होता जा रह� है |
मै� यही कहूंगा कि यह मात्� एक व्यंग्�-कथ� नही� है, अपित� हमार� समाज पर कस� गय� एक तीखा कटाक्ष है | सर्वज्� रू� से, यह हिंदी उपन्या� का मास्टरपी� है |

If anyone asks me to describe this novel in one word, I will say: magnificent
If someone asks to do the same in two words, I'll say: Extremely magnificent.
If someone asks to do the same in three words, I'll say: magnificent and laudable.
In this book, Shrilal Shukla ji has depicted village life and rural political methods in detail. The special thing is that this description is very accurate and sarcastic.
I have read only a few 4-5 Hindi novels, and I am satisfied that Raag Darbari is among them. Shrilal ji has given a remarkable description of Indian politics at the grassroots level. Even in the contemporary era, as the roots of embezzlement, dynasticism, and corruption are getting stronger, similarly this novel of more than 50 years ago is becoming more and more relevant.
I would say that this is not just a satire story, but a sharp sarcasm on our society. All in all, this is the masterpiece of a Hindi novel.
There is no reason not to give it 5/5.

If i were marooned on a god-forsaken island with just one book, this is the one i'd wish to have. Hilarious, sarcastic and intense, it has the same charm even if you read it for the n-th time. The modern day "shining" India, depicted through a village in a most natural manner make it one of the best satires you'll ever come across. The book is full of conversations reading which you'd be compelled to pause for a while and have a laugh. A must read.

क्या कहें ? खु� को अन्द� से बाहर तक पूरा खुला हु� महसू� कर के कैसा लगता है ? जैसा लगता है- बस वैसा ही लग रह� है |
बहुत सम� तक, बल्क� और साफ़-साफ़ बोलू� तो रा� दरबारी को पढने से पहले तक मेरा ये मन्न� था कि हिंदी मे� व्यंग्� नही� लिखे गए है� और , विश्�-स्तर के तो बिलकुल भी नहीं| कई बा� मंथन के बा� ये बा� भी मेरे मन मे� आई (और अनवर�-अनायास प्रकार की मस्तिष्क-मंथन प्रक्रिय� से आन� वाले और भी तमाम बहुमूल्य लगने वाले विचारो� या रत्नों की तर� ये भी कु� सम� बा� अपनी अपरिपक्वता पर संदे� करती रही ) कि कही� हिंदी भाषा की संरचना के सा� ही तो ये समस्या नही� है कि व्यंग्� मे� हास्� नही� सम्मिलित हो पाता | लेकि� खाड़ी बोली के सा� व्यंग्� चुटीला और वाक्�-दर-वाक्� हंसोड़ होने की सामर्थ्य रखता है- ये मुझे (कम से कम मुझे, और हो सकता है कि अधिक से अधिक मुझे ) तो रा� दरबारी के बा� पत� चल� | इस तर� से रा� दरबारी के लि� मेरी पहली प्रशंस� तो ये रही कि इसने मेरे लि� हिंदी साहित्� का सेंस ऑफ� ह्यूमर सुधा� दिया है |
बाकी बाते� ! बाकी तो इतनी बाते� है� कि जितन� सम� इस� पूरा पढने मे� लग� , उसका करी� दस गुना या उससे भी ज्यादा सम� इसकी प्रशंस� मे� लि� सकता हू� (ध्या� देने कि बा� यहाँ पर ये है कि लिखे� मे� पढने से ज्यादा सम� तो लगता ही है ) | मुख्� किरदार निभाने का कार्यभार सम� सम� पर पूरे कथान� के दौरा� कई किरदारों के कन्धों पर टिकय� गय� है | फि� भी वैद्� जी और उनके बुद्धिजीवी भतीजे ही इस भूमिका मे� अधिक दिखा� देते है� | ये बा� अं� मे� पुष्� भी होती है क्योकि कथान� का उपसंहा� वैद्यजी के हाथो� होता है जबकि उपन्या� का पटाक्षेप रंगनाथ की उपस्थिति, बल्क� केंद्र मे� रखते हु� होता है | ये साहित्यि� कुशलता कही जाएगी |
एक और बहुत खूबसूर� बा� है कि ३३� पन्नों मे� से ३२� पन्न� तक तो आप शिवपालगं� के गंजहों के सा� ऐस� घु� मि� जायेंग� कि आप भी रंगनाथ के जैसे ही भू� जायंगे कि आप वहां के नही� है� , बाहर के आए है� और वापस भी जाना है | लेकि� वैद्� जी के अंति� परिणाम सुनत� ही आपको रंगनाथ के जैसे ध्या� आएगा कि भा� हम तो यहाँ के है� नही�, और पत� चलेग� कि कहानी का अं� भी � गय� है | अमूम� मैंन� जितन� भी उपन्या� पढ़े , अधिकां� ऐस� है� जिनम� अं� का एक, दो या ती� अध्याय केवल उपसंहा� जैसे ही लगते है� ( और बेशक मै� यहाँ क्लासि� साहित्� कि ही बा� कर रह� हू�,- जैसे मैला आँचल ); मै� उस� कु� नही� कह रह� , बस इस� उससे थोडा अल� पत� हू� और ये मज़ा देता है |

बहुत सम� तक, बल्क� और साफ़-साफ़ बोलू� तो रा� दरबारी को पढने से पहले तक मेरा ये मन्न� था कि हिंदी मे� व्यंग्� नही� लिखे गए है� और , विश्�-स्तर के तो बिलकुल भी नहीं| कई बा� मंथन के बा� ये बा� भी मेरे मन मे� आई (और अनवर�-अनायास प्रकार की मस्तिष्क-मंथन प्रक्रिय� से आन� वाले और भी तमाम बहुमूल्य लगने वाले विचारो� या रत्नों की तर� ये भी कु� सम� बा� अपनी अपरिपक्वता पर संदे� करती रही ) कि कही� हिंदी भाषा की संरचना के सा� ही तो ये समस्या नही� है कि व्यंग्� मे� हास्� नही� सम्मिलित हो पाता | लेकि� खाड़ी बोली के सा� व्यंग्� चुटीला और वाक्�-दर-वाक्� हंसोड़ होने की सामर्थ्य रखता है- ये मुझे (कम से कम मुझे, और हो सकता है कि अधिक से अधिक मुझे ) तो रा� दरबारी के बा� पत� चल� | इस तर� से रा� दरबारी के लि� मेरी पहली प्रशंस� तो ये रही कि इसने मेरे लि� हिंदी साहित्� का सेंस ऑफ� ह्यूमर सुधा� दिया है |
बाकी बाते� ! बाकी तो इतनी बाते� है� कि जितन� सम� इस� पूरा पढने मे� लग� , उसका करी� दस गुना या उससे भी ज्यादा सम� इसकी प्रशंस� मे� लि� सकता हू� (ध्या� देने कि बा� यहाँ पर ये है कि लिखे� मे� पढने से ज्यादा सम� तो लगता ही है ) | मुख्� किरदार निभाने का कार्यभार सम� सम� पर पूरे कथान� के दौरा� कई किरदारों के कन्धों पर टिकय� गय� है | फि� भी वैद्� जी और उनके बुद्धिजीवी भतीजे ही इस भूमिका मे� अधिक दिखा� देते है� | ये बा� अं� मे� पुष्� भी होती है क्योकि कथान� का उपसंहा� वैद्यजी के हाथो� होता है जबकि उपन्या� का पटाक्षेप रंगनाथ की उपस्थिति, बल्क� केंद्र मे� रखते हु� होता है | ये साहित्यि� कुशलता कही जाएगी |
एक और बहुत खूबसूर� बा� है कि ३३� पन्नों मे� से ३२� पन्न� तक तो आप शिवपालगं� के गंजहों के सा� ऐस� घु� मि� जायेंग� कि आप भी रंगनाथ के जैसे ही भू� जायंगे कि आप वहां के नही� है� , बाहर के आए है� और वापस भी जाना है | लेकि� वैद्� जी के अंति� परिणाम सुनत� ही आपको रंगनाथ के जैसे ध्या� आएगा कि भा� हम तो यहाँ के है� नही�, और पत� चलेग� कि कहानी का अं� भी � गय� है | अमूम� मैंन� जितन� भी उपन्या� पढ़े , अधिकां� ऐस� है� जिनम� अं� का एक, दो या ती� अध्याय केवल उपसंहा� जैसे ही लगते है� ( और बेशक मै� यहाँ क्लासि� साहित्� कि ही बा� कर रह� हू�,- जैसे मैला आँचल ); मै� उस� कु� नही� कह रह� , बस इस� उससे थोडा अल� पत� हू� और ये मज़ा देता है |

Shrilal Shukla's masterpiece Raag Darbari is a representative novel of the rapidly changing (or degrading) values & ethos in India's rural heartland post independence.
Ranganath, a research scholar looking for some recuperation and tired of banalities in urban life, arrives in a village called Shivpalganz. Once there, he comes across Vaidyaji, a distant relation & the village tout. Vaidyaji literally rules over the village, with two of his sons acting as his henchmen & most of his cronies occupying important positions (the Sarpanch, the police station in charge etc.) in the village. Their complete domination over the socio-economic aspects of Shivpalganz is more covert & subtle, rather than being overt & out in the face. Amid all these, the protagonist's desire to find peace, serenity & tranquility in the village life slowly falls apart. Ranganath discovers that the concept of village life being purer than city life is a myth, that's been shattered with the influx of petty politics, turf feuds & dubious morality into rural life.
Shrilal Shukla's Shivpalganz is not just one village, but it epitomizes any Indian village that underwent a transformation in the face of the social & political changes sweeping the country. Similarly, Ranganath is a representative of the common educated Indian, who find himself hapless & clueless in the face of rapid degradation in values.
My limited abilities with words may not do full justice to this masterpiece. But Shukla, with his writing style & superb understanding of village life, brings Shivpalganz to the realm of reality around the reader. It would suffice to say that Shukla does to Shivpalganz what Narayanan did to Malgudi, albeit in an entirely different dimension.
I could not read the original Hindi version (blame it on limited knowledge of the language), but read an Odia (Oriya) translation while in school & an English translation later. However that didn't diminish my appreciation of this epic novel.
Note: A tele-serial of the 90s was based on this novel & had the same name. It had Om Puri playing Ranganath, the chief protagonist.

किता� मे� हमारी 'सोने की चिड़िय�' को तबिय� से झाड़ लगायी गयी है. बड़े दिनो� से अंग्रेजी के लूले, भोथर� व्यंग्� पढ� पढ� कर मेरा सेन्� ऑफ� ह्यूमर भी घा� चरने निकल गय� था. बचपन मे� पढ� हु� तीखे व्यंग्यो� को भू� गय� था. आजकल सभी लो� बड़े संवेदनशी� हो गए है�, ज़रा सी बा� पर उख� जाते है� और के� कर देते है�.
श्रीला� शुक्� की किता� पढ़त�-पढ़त� पूरा बचपन आँखो� के आग� घू� गय� और मश्तिष्क के कोनो� से यादे� निकली� जो बहुत दिनो� पहले मै� खो चुका था. आग� बढ़त�-बढ़त� जितन� हँसत� है�, दि� उतना ही बै� जाता है. १९६८ मे� भी भारत ऐस� था और आज भी ऐस� ही है और बड़े लम्ब� सम� तक ऐस� ही रहने वाला है. आज भी जब पिताजी के ग्रामी� बैंक के सर्वेक्ष� मे� उनके सा� आसपा� के गाँवों मे� जाता हू� तो वही सब देखन� को मिलत� है. बस ग्रामोफ़ोन रिकार्ड्� की जग� चीनी फ़ोनों से घरघरात� गाने सुने पड़त� है� और पुराने बेहूदे गानो� के स्था� पर नए बेहूदे गाने � गए है�. अज्ञेय और जैनेन्द्� कुमा� के बा� के हिंदी साहित्� मे� यह पहली किता� मैंन� पढ़ी है और इसने हिंदी साहित्� की नयी दिशाओं की ओर मुझे इंगि� कर दिया है. कुकुरमुत्तों की तर� उगते फालत� अंग्रेजी साहित्� के बी� इस किता� को पढना वाकई राहत दे रह� है.

Shrilal Shukla is known as one of the prominent Hindi authors. The first time I have read Shrilal Shukla’s work is in my school’s Hindi syllabus. It also had mentioned of Raag Darbari, since then I wanted to read this book.
This story is set in the village Shivpalganj, Uttar Pradesh; the period is of post-independence. The villager called themselves ‘Ganjha� referring their village name.
Rangnath, who is M.A. in history, comes to the village to gain some health as he was ill with the disease. He wasn’t able to catch a train as he thought the train will be 2 hours late but it was just 1.5 hours late. After this, he requests a truck driver to leave him at Shivpalganj. In this short journey, he sees the condition of poor and congested roads, the corruption of traffic police.
So he finally reaches Shivpalganj in his uncle, Vaidyji’s house. Vaidyji is a kind of godfather of the village. He is the manager of the Changamal inter college; he is the head of the co-operative organization. In short, the whole village politics is running under his hand.
This book is outstanding and the way author has served humor, great story-line, character, and message are appreciable. The village shown in this book is an epitome of our country. Though this book is written 49 years ago but all the concepts is still relevant.

Outstanding.Brilliant.Haven't read a better satire.Not a single line of the novel could be skipped.Each sentence is filled with wit and aphorism. Humour is so subtle and finely woven in the fabric of the story that you keep chuckling to yourself throughout while marveling at the imagination of the author.
The first paragraph of the book describing a truck parked by the roadside sets the tone of the novel. Thereafter, it's a hilarious journey through the rural landscape of Shivpalganj where "Ganjhas" engage in a social and political discourse during the third five-year plan. The artfulness of Vaidji, the narcissism of Rupan Babu, the bluntness of Badri pahalwan and the thick-headedness of Chhote pahalwan add colour to the story. It's the liberal but careful use of similes, metaphors, and personifications that makes this novel exceptionally witty.
For all those who're not used to reading books in Hindi, an English translation of the book is also available.But it's best enjoyed in Hindi :)

एक अनोखी शैली है शुक्� साहब की� शिवपालगं� सही मे� एक गाँव है या नही�, मेरे लि� कहना मुश्कि� होगा� श्रीमा� नारायण के मालगुडी की तर� ये क़स्बा भी अपने आप मे� अनूठ� ही है� परन्तु हर सम� लगातार एक एहसा� रह� उस अपनेपन का जो हमार� � था और हमने देखा भी नही�, मग� फि� भी हम उस जग� के हो गए� गज़ब का व्यं� है� हालाँक� उपन्या� कराची हलवे की तर� चल� जा रही थी, जिसस� थोड़ी कोफ़्त महसू� हुई। मग� भाषा की रोचकता ने कभी सा� नही� छोड़ा। शुक्� साहब ने खु� प्रस्तावना मे� लिखा है की "दोषरहि� रचना भी उबाऊ हो सकती है, जबकि दोषयुक्त रचना मज़ेदा� हो सकती है�" यह रचना � सिर्� मज़ेदा� है अपित� अपने अन्द� एक नन्ह� भारत समाय� है� इसका एक एक किरदार लाजवाब और पेचीदा है।ख़ा� बा� है की इनकी पेचीदगी मे� भी बड़ी सरलत� है�
अपने कु� खामियो� के बा� भी कहना अनुचित � होगा की यह उपन्या� एक कालजयी कृति है!

अग� आप व्यंग्� के शौक़ी� है�, तो इस� अवश्� पढ़ें। श्रीला� शुक्� भारती� राजनीति को जमीनी स्तर पर समझत� हैं। एक भारती� गाँव मे� जीवन के विवर� के सा�-सा� सभी प्रकार की कुटिलत�, छल, साजि� और रणनीति का वर्ण� किया गय� है� लेखक के पा� दृश्� विवरणो� के लि� एक अद्भुत नज़र है, व्यक्तिग� संबंधो� मे� अंतर्दृष्ट� को भेदना। लेखक हमें व्यंग्� के माध्यम से समाज की कहानी सुनाते है� और वास्तविकता दिखाते हैं। हर पाँत मे� व्यंग्� है�

Every couple of pages have that sarcastic punch on the government and system, which will have you rolling. And the fun (actually sad!) part is all of the sarcastic pokes still holds true after 50 years when it was first published.
Easy flowing Hindi topped with some Avadhi dialect conversations making it humorous throughout.
I love books which have intelligent chapter titles. This one is devoid of chapter titles and yet is more precious than chapter titles for its unique art. It has different stamp sized inscriptions at the beginning of every chapter which relates to the chapter setting.

अग� किसी किता� ने आपको आरम्� से लेकर अं� तक हसाय� है, गुदगुदाय� है, तमाच� मारा है, आँखे� खोली है, यथार्थ दिखलाय� है तो वो रा� दरबारी ही है. जी हा�, आपको इन सारी चीज़ों के लि� कई सारी पुसतके� पढनी नही� पड़ेगी. सिर्� आपको रा� दरबारी पढना होगा. एक ऐस� गाँव की कहानी जो � ही शह� है ना ही गाँव है. उसमे भ्रष्टाचार व्याप्� है. लेकि� इतने रोचक और कटाक्ष के सा� श्रीला� जी ने यह उपन्या� लिखा है की आपका मन कभी नही� करेग� यह पुस्तक � पढने का. आप किसी भी एक पंक्ति को उठ� ले� आप उसमे जरूर मुस्कुरा देंग�. को� रचयिता कैसे पहली से लेकर आखरी पंक्ति तक किता� मे� वही रोचकता बनाए रख सकता है? कटाक्ष की को� सीमा नही�. हर एक पात्� करीने से गढ़ा हु�. हर एक बा� कु� कहने के उद्देश्य से नही� वर� सिखलान� के उद्देश्य से कही जाती है. पात्� आप� मे� कितन� सह� ढं� से बा� करते हु� भी आज के समाज का आइना दिखल� देते है�. यह उपन्या� जितन� अधिक प्रासंगि� १९६८ मे� था उतना ही प्रासंगि� आज भी है. रंगनाथ के आँखो� से रची यह दुनिया आपको ऐस� ऐस� पात्रो� से मिलवाती है जो स्वार्�, गुंड�,मक्कारी, खुदगर्जी और ऐस� ही � जाने कि� कि� बुराइयों से घिरे है�. ग्रामी� समाज तथ� उनके आस पा� की दुनिया का ऐस� सुन्दर विवर� और ऐस� यथार्थ चित्रण और वो भी कटाक्ष के रू� मे� शायद ही कही� मिलेगा. वह चाहे वैद्� जी हो या रुप्पन बाबु या शनिच� या गयादी� जी हर पात्� आपको मनुष्य के हर गुणो� को दिखाएग�. � सितारे भी कम है� इस उपन्या� के लि�, जरूर पढ़े�.

Raag Darbari is a lesson in cynicism. It is a heavy satire on the so called intellectuals of modern India and although the book was written in '68, it remains relevant and contemporary till date.

It takes great skill to pull off satire in the midst of corruption and decadence. Rag Darbari manages to do just that and the medium of Hindi is one of the main reason behind that achievement.
Set in the small fiction town of Shivpalganj, the novel moves through different aspects of corruption, gullibility and bullheadedness found in the rural folks.
Shukla comically highlights the bureaucratic sclerosis in the provincial establishment and the emergence of local satraps in small towns who oscillate between the unaware people and the unmindful government. While any reader would find the novel engaging, the one from small towns and villages of North India will be able to relate to it most closely and laugh harder on author's comic jibes. Shukla doesn't spend any space on giving natural or philosophical descriptions or providing his worldview about the topics in the novel. He is direct and to the point, a special quality that comes off best in the Hindi language.
From mocking the laughable court sessions for cases filed by villagers against one another to the farce of electing a local fool as a village sarpanch, the author has in a way tried to put his hand in that village local pond and draw out the mud on its floor. Besides the subtle sarcasm, another thing that sets this book apart is the presence of colorful characters in the novel. There is the town leader 'vaidya ji' who started off by selling the village youth formulas for sexual strength, and employs a local fool 'Sanichar', later gets him elected sarpanch of the village. Local bullheadedness or what we call 'dheetpan' is represented by 'chote pehalwan' who can never keep his tongue and attitude under control. Then there is 'langar', a crippled resident, who out of his determination not to pay a bribe has been circling around regional government office for more than a year. And finally, Pandit Radheylal, an acclaimed liar who would become a witness in anyone's case for some money and had the unblemished record of never being trumped by any lawyer in the history of district court cross questioning.
Shukla also constantly throws in passages describing the poor sanitation visible in rural areas with a style easily identifiable to a village observer. The lack of cleanliness in rural areas is the reason that Gandhi gave so much stress on sanitation in villages and the present government is pushing its 'swachh bharat' campaign so vigorously.
However, the best part is that Shukla doesn't just delves in rural stagnation but also describes the slow change that is happening in the independent India. From evolving caste politics to politically empowered but dumb local youth, he makes the readers see the change from the eyes of characters such as a college educated youth 'Ranganath' who comes to the village to coalesce from his illness and gets sucked into local issues.
Rag Darbari doesn't attempt to give a conclusion. It just presents a snippet of small town life while underlining several sociological phenomenon. The book for me is undoubtedly the best of all the Hindi novels I have read till now; even better than Premchand (father of Hindi literature). Read it to feel the best of Hindi satire and an Indian equal to 'Catch 22'.
Set in the small fiction town of Shivpalganj, the novel moves through different aspects of corruption, gullibility and bullheadedness found in the rural folks.
Shukla comically highlights the bureaucratic sclerosis in the provincial establishment and the emergence of local satraps in small towns who oscillate between the unaware people and the unmindful government. While any reader would find the novel engaging, the one from small towns and villages of North India will be able to relate to it most closely and laugh harder on author's comic jibes. Shukla doesn't spend any space on giving natural or philosophical descriptions or providing his worldview about the topics in the novel. He is direct and to the point, a special quality that comes off best in the Hindi language.
From mocking the laughable court sessions for cases filed by villagers against one another to the farce of electing a local fool as a village sarpanch, the author has in a way tried to put his hand in that village local pond and draw out the mud on its floor. Besides the subtle sarcasm, another thing that sets this book apart is the presence of colorful characters in the novel. There is the town leader 'vaidya ji' who started off by selling the village youth formulas for sexual strength, and employs a local fool 'Sanichar', later gets him elected sarpanch of the village. Local bullheadedness or what we call 'dheetpan' is represented by 'chote pehalwan' who can never keep his tongue and attitude under control. Then there is 'langar', a crippled resident, who out of his determination not to pay a bribe has been circling around regional government office for more than a year. And finally, Pandit Radheylal, an acclaimed liar who would become a witness in anyone's case for some money and had the unblemished record of never being trumped by any lawyer in the history of district court cross questioning.
Shukla also constantly throws in passages describing the poor sanitation visible in rural areas with a style easily identifiable to a village observer. The lack of cleanliness in rural areas is the reason that Gandhi gave so much stress on sanitation in villages and the present government is pushing its 'swachh bharat' campaign so vigorously.
However, the best part is that Shukla doesn't just delves in rural stagnation but also describes the slow change that is happening in the independent India. From evolving caste politics to politically empowered but dumb local youth, he makes the readers see the change from the eyes of characters such as a college educated youth 'Ranganath' who comes to the village to coalesce from his illness and gets sucked into local issues.
Rag Darbari doesn't attempt to give a conclusion. It just presents a snippet of small town life while underlining several sociological phenomenon. The book for me is undoubtedly the best of all the Hindi novels I have read till now; even better than Premchand (father of Hindi literature). Read it to feel the best of Hindi satire and an Indian equal to 'Catch 22'.

इस उपन्या� के संदर्भ मे� जितन� भी कह� जा�, निस्संदे� कम ही होगा� मै� हिंदी साहित्� की बड़ी जानक� तो नही� � ही मैंन� कई हिंदी उपन्या� पढ़े है�, पर इस� पढ़न� के बा� अपनी इस भू� का अहसा� हो रह� है� श्रीला� शुक्� जी जि� प्रकार पाठक को लोटपोट करते हु� भारत के बड़े ही विचित्� सामाजि�, राजनैतिक और आर्थिक स्तिथि का उल्लेख करते है� और अपने पात्रो� के मनोवृत्त� को एक व्यंग्यात्मक ढं� से उजाग� करते है�, उसकी जितनी सराहना की जा� कम ही पड़ेगी� वैसे तो इस� एक सटाय� की श्रेणी मे� गिना जा सकता है, मग� इस� भूले से भी केवल एक काल्पनिक रचना नही� कह� जा सकता� 1960 के दश� मे� लिखी गई यह साहित्यि� कलाकृत� के घटनाक्रम के परिस्थितियों से आज की पीढ़ी भी भलीभांत� परिचित है, वो पीढ़ी जो उस सम� � खु� जन्मी होगी और � ही उनके माता-पिता जन्म� होंगे। जैसा की शुक्� जी प्रस्तावना मे� लिखत� है�, "जैसे जैसे गब�, धोखाधड़ी, भ्रष्टाचार और वंशवाद अपनी जड़े� मज़बूत करता जा रह� है, वैसे वैसे आज से चाली� (अब पचास) वर्ष पहले का यह उपन्या� और ज़्याद� प्रासंगि� होता जा रह� है"�

वैसे तो 'रा� दरबारी' का प्रकाश� 1968 मे� हु� था� यानी आज से लगभग 50 सा� पहले� लेकि� इस किता� को पढ़न� के बा� आपको कही� से भी यह नही� लग सकता कि इसमे� इतने पुराने दिनो� की बा� हो रही है� शिवपालगं� को कही� अल� से खोजन� जाने की जरुर� नही� है� अग� ध्या� से देखिएग� तो हमार� आपके बी� छोटे-बड़े कितन� शिवपालगं�, कितन� वैद्यजी, कितन� रामाधी� भीखमखेड़वी मौज़ूद हैं। यह एक लेखक के लि� गर्व की बा� हो सकती है कि उसकी लिखी रचना लिखे जाने के बा� और ज्यादा प्रासंगि� होती जा रही है� इसमे� से कु� बाते� अग� उस सम� को पाठकों को काल्पनिक लग गयी हो� तो आज तो सर्वथा उचित ही लगती हैं। यहाँ एक बा� आश्चर्� करने वाली यह है कि यह सब आज़ादी के दो दशको� के भीतर हो गय� था� जि� आज़ादी के लि� इतने लोगो� ने अपनी जा� की कुर्बानी लग� दी थी उसका विकृ� स्वरुप बहुत जल्दी ही बेपर्द� हो गय� था�
इस उपन्या� की कहानी किन्ही� मुख्� किरदारों के इर्द-गिर्� नही� घूमती है� उपन्या� मे� अनेक पात्� है� और लगभग सभी किरदारों को समान अहमियत दी गई है� गाँव की राजनीति के दो मुख्� ध्रु� है� - वैद्यजी और रामाधी� भीखमखेड़वी� वैद्यजी अपरोक्� रू� से गाँव का कॉले�, कोआपरेटि� सोसाइटी चलात� हैं। इस बा� प्रधान पद भी वैद्यजी के गु� मे� � गय� था� रामाधी� के पा� अवैध धंधो� का एकाधिकार था� वैद्यजी के दो बेटे थे - एक अखाड़े मे� पहलवानी करते थे और दूसर� कॉले� मे� राजनीति और गुण्डागर्दी� रंगनाथ शह� का पढ़ा हु� एक लड़क� है जो कि कु� दिनो� की छुट्टी के लि� शिवपालगं� मे� अपने मामा वैद्यजी के पा� जाता है� ये सभी पात्� शिवपालगं� के रहने वाले हैं। कहानी के स्थानो� के वर्ण� से यह लखनऊ के पा� किसी स्था� की कहानी लगती है, जहाँ अवधी भाषा बोली जाती है�
कहानी मे� हास्� है लेकि� हास्� केन्द्रि� कहानी कह देना अनुचित होगा� कहानी का केन्द्� व्यवस्था मे� जड� जम� चुकी अनैतिकता है� अं� मे� हर एक पात्� का उद्द्येश्य सिर्� यह रह जाता है कि को� ची� उसके अनुसार हो रही है कि नहीं। व्यवस्था को सुधारन� से किसी का को� उद्द्येश्य नही� रह जाता� सरकारी तंत्� के जि� अंगो� का यहाँ पर ज़िक्र हु� है उनका बहुत ही पतित रू� दिखाया गय� है चाहे वह पुलि� हो, न्यायालय हो, सरकारी विद्यालय निरीक्षक हो� या गाँव के प्रधान ही क्यो� � हों। हर एक व्यवस्था को अपने अनुसार ढा� लेना यह को� इस उपन्या� के पात्रो� से सीखे� यह करते सम� भी ऊप� से आदर्शवाद का दिखावा बनाय� रख� जाता है और भाषणों मे� आदर्शवाद की को� कमी नही� दिखा� पड़ेगी� सामान्� जनता मे� भी शायद इस बा� का भरोस� हो गय� है कि जिसक� पा� शक्त� है वही सब कु� कर सकता है, अन्यथा व्यवस्था से लड़न� का को� फायद� नही� है� उपन्या� मे� यह भी दिखाया गय� है कि कि� प्रकार से रब�-स्टाम्� लोगो� के माध्यम से सत्त� को परदे के पीछे से संचालि� किया जाता है�
इस उपन्या� मे� आदर्शवाद और यथार्थवा� के बी� की खींचता� को दिखाया गय� है� शह� का पढ़ा हु� नौजवान जब किताबी आदर्शो� को लेकर गाँव पहुँचत� है तो उस� हर एक संस्था भ्रष्ट लगती है� वह हर सम� यही कोशि� करता रहता है कि कैसे इस व्यवस्था को सुधा� जाये� उसने जब देखा कि अन्याय के खिला� लड़न� वालो� का पलड़� कमजो� हो रह� है तो उसने उन लोगो� की तर� से आवाज उठान� की कोशि� भी की और उनको अप्रत्यक्ष रू� से बेईमानी के विरुद्� लड़त� रहने के लि� उकसाया भी� इतना सब करने के बा� भी जब उसकी कोशिशो� का को� परिणाम नही� निकल� तो उसने हा� मा� ली� और गाँव छोड़कर जाने का फैसल� कर लिया� लेकि� तब कहानी के अन्य पात्� ने उससे कह� कि जाओग� कहाँ� हर जग� तो बेईमानी और भ्रष्टाचार व्याप्� है� उसने इस बा� पर सोचा भी कि छोटे बड़े रू� मे� हर जग� शासन ऐस� ही चलता है� यही इस उपन्या� का मू� तत्त्व कह� जा सकता है कि अनेक बा� जब आदर्शवाद और यथार्थवा� टकराते है� तो बहुध� पहले हा� मानन� वाला आदर्शवाद ही होता है�
उपन्या� की भाषा मे� आँचलिकता के तत्व हैं। उत्त� प्रदेश के अव� प्रान्� मे� बोले जाने वाले बहुत से शब्द इस्तेमाल किये गए हैं। कई जग� सीधे सीधे अवधी भाषा मे� किये गए वार्ताला� को उद्धृत किया गय� है� पूरी पुस्तक के हर एक पैराग्रा� मे� शासन-व्यवस्था पर प्रत्यक्� रू� से कटाक्ष किया गय� है� इस तर� से कही� भी रूचि कम नही� होती है� कहानी का अं� थोड़� अल� है� यह लग सकता है कि अं� अचान� से हो गय� है� सा� ही सा� कॉफ़ीहाउस मे� चलने वाली वैचारि� चर्चाओ� पर भी व्यं� कस� गय� है जिनक� को� परिणाम निकलकर नही� आत� है लेकि� उसमे� भा� लेने वाले अपने कर्तव्यो� की इतिश्री सम� लेते हैं। श्रीला� शुक्� को इस कृति के लि� 1969 मे� साहित्� अकादमी पुरस्कार से नवाज़ा गय� था� कटाक्ष का एक उदाहरण देखिये-

हिंदी के कालजयी उपन्या� रा� दरबारी के बारे मे� मैंन� किसी भी साहित्यि� पत्रिक� या चर्च� से अधिक गै� साहित्यि� लोगो� से जाना| जब २८ अक्टूब� २०११ मे� उपन्यासकार श्रीला� शुक्� की मृत्यु हु�, तब रा� दरबारी की चर्च� सोशल मीडिया मे� अफसरशा�, कूटनीतिज्� और पब्लिक पालिसी से सम्बद्� लो� अधिक कर रह� थे| मज� की बा� यह है कि वो सभी इस� निर्विवा� रू� से बेहद शानदार साहित्यि� कृति के रू� मे� या� कर रह� थे| रा� दरबारी को “एनिमल फार्म� जैसी कृतियो� जितन� महत्वपूर्ण बताय� जा रह� था| रा� दरबारी पर हु� उस सम� हु� साहित्यि� चर्च� मुझे आजकल की अधिकतर पंडिता� और दलिताऊ चर्चाओ� की तर� ऊबाऊ लग रही थी|
इस वर्ष आखिरका� मैंन� रा� दरबारी खरी� ही लिया| यह एक शानदार निवे� साबि� हो रह� है| रा� दरबारी पढ़त� सम� मुझे कई बा� लग� की शायद यह आजकल मे� ही लिखा गय� उपन्या� है| क्या पिछल� पचास वर्ष मे� भारत मे� कु� भी नही� बदला है? यकी� नही� हु� कि रा� दरबारी १९६८ मे� प्रकाशित हु� था| अग� कंप्यूटर और मोबाइल का बेहद हल्क� सा रा� भी रा� दरबारी के दरबा� मे� रहता तो हम इस� २००८ मे� प्रकाशित हु� मा� सकते थे| यही तो कालजयी उपन्या� की जय है|
रा� दरबारी पढ़त� सम� मै� मोदी और केजरीवा� के किस्से भी परिभाषित होते हु� दे� पाया, जो उपन्या� लिखे जाने के लगभग चाली� वर्ष बा� घट रह� हैं| इस उपन्या� मे� अनेक उपकथायें है� आज कल घटित होती है�, या कहें आजकल भी घटित होती हैं| कु� घटनाएं नही� तो उनके सन्दर्� आजकल के सम� मे� दिखा� दे जाते हैं|
“वास्त� मे� सच्च� हिन्दुस्तानी की यही परिभाष� है कि वह इंसा� जो कही� भी पा� खाने का इंतजाम कर ले और कही� भी पेशा� करने की जग� ढूंढ ले|�
इस एक वाक्� मे� मुझे मोदीजी के सफाई अभियान से लेकर गुटख� (तम्बाख� युक्� पा� मसाल� जो पा� का आधुनिक सम� बचाऊ विकल्प है) महसू� होता है| इस तर� से नगीने रा� दरबारी मे� बिखर� पड़े हैं| रा� दरबारी भारत की वर्तमा� राजनीति, लोकतंत्र, अफसरशाही, भा�-भतीजावा�, जाति-प्रपंच, साम्प्रदायिकता, अध�-पढ़त� आद� अनेकानेक पहलूओं पर कालजयी व्यं� है|
रा� दरबारी की रोचकता इसकी कहानी का सर� होना और रोजमर्रा की जिन्दगी के बेहद करी� होना है| बेहद साधारण कहानी को श्रीला� शुक्� जी ने बेहद रुचिकर तरीके से कहकर पाठक के सामन� सजाय� है जिसमें कथान� खु� अपने हर पहलू की विवेचन� करता चलता है| कथानाय� रंगनाथ वास्तव मे� सहनायक है| कहानी के कथ्य मे� उपन्यासकार लगातार अपनी सह� उपस्तिथि बनाय� रखता है मग� कथान� मे� किसी भी प्रकार का हस्तक्षे� नही� करता| उपन्यासकार की टिप्पणियाँ कथान� को सजी� बनात� हु� उस� आग� बढ़ाती� है| यह टिप्पणियाँ ही है� जो हमें कथान� को कालजयी रू� से पढ़न� मे� मद� करती हैं| रा� दरबारी का हर पृष्� पढ़त� हु� आपको के सम्पूर्ण कहानी का अहसा� होता है जो आपके करी� से ही उठाई गयी है| आपने रा� दरबारी को कही� � कही� जीवन मे� महसू� किया है| इसके पात्� अपने साधारण परिवेश के बा� भी जाने पहचाने हु� हैं| सभी पात्� जीवन के सभी कार्� उसी साधारण तरीके से कर रह� है� जिन्हे� हम सभी अपने अपने साधारण तरीके से करते हैं|
पुस्तक केवल पढने लायक नही� है वर� हमेश� अपने सा� रखने लायक है|

Predominantly being a reader of English books, I did not expect a Hindi novel to provide a heavy dose of satire and laughter. Raag Darbari is an immaculate representation of Independent India that's marching towards modernism yet showing no signs of transformation. The ways of the world - and the cities of the country, for that matter - remain relatively unknown to villages and a twisted mindset that exists among the village folk is highlighted with almost-perfect subtlety at every stage in the story. This book deserves much more than applause or a shout-out to our literary prowess.

Highly nuanced even though the style is a classic satire. Witty one liners and references to leaders like Nehru, Panth like they were just their to be read in the newspapers or to be heard on the radio can cover the book in sepia. Leaves the taste of raw mango pickle that most of us sourced from our dear Grandparents tinged with their wisdom and humor. Part social commentary and part piece of literature this is a book rolled many things into one.
Glad I picked this one.

इस उपन्या� की इतनी तारी� सुनक� मुझे लग� था शायद मै� भी इसको इतना ही पसंद करूँगा जितन� ज्यादातर पाठकों ने किया है� निश्चय ही इस उपन्या� की भाषा, अव� के जीवन का वर्ण�, और शुक्� जी का व्यंग्� काबिले तारी� है� जैसा की अन्य पाठकों ने कह� है, यह उपन्या� कई मामलों मे� सम� पर खर� भी उतरा है� पर मुझे रा� दरबारी मे� कु� खामिया� नज़र आयी� जिनकी वज� से इसको पढ़न� उतना आनंदमय नही� रह� जितनी मेरी उम्मी� थी� कु� उदाहरण निम्� है�:
- अच्छी लेखनी का एक सिद्धांत है "शो, डोंट टे�", अर्थात आपको जो कहना है वो आप पात्रो� और कथ� के विका� के माध्यम से कहें, ना की खु� ही उसको विस्ता� से बताएं। शुक्� जी कु� पात्रो� के माध्यम से अपनी लेखनी आग� बढ़ाते है�, पर अक्स� वे खु� ही विस्ता� से दे�, गाँव, शह�, सरका�, भ्रष्टाचार, शिक्षा इत्याद� पर लम्ब� लम्ब� व्यंग्� लिखत� हैं। जैसे उपन्या� आग� बढ़त� है, इस तर� के व्यंग्� काफी दुहराए हु� लगते है� और उपन्या� मे� रूचि कम करते हैं।
- इस उपन्या� मे� महिल� किरदार या तो है� ही नही� या फि� वे बस हाशिये पर एक सेक्� ऑब्जेक्ट की तर� मौजू� हैं। उपन्या� मे� एक भी केंद्री� महिल� किरदार नही� है� बेला का ज़िक्र उपन्या� मे� अक्स� आत� है पर हमेश� दूसर� मर्दों के परिप्रेक्ष्य में। और किसी भी महिल� का कहानी मे� को� रो� नही� है� कहानी के इर्द गिर्� कु� महिलाओ� और लड़कियों का ज़िक्र होता है, पर वे हमेश� या तो खु� वासन� उकस���ती हु� (जैसे शह� की "अंग्रेजी बोलन� वाली" लड़कियां) या फि� मर्दों की कल्पना मे� वासन� की कमी पूरी करती मिलती हैं। यह सोचक� अचम्भा होता है की गाँव की इस कथ� मे� एक भी महिल� केंद्र मे� नही� है�

Of all the many books I have read, if I were to pick my top 5 or 10, this would make it every time!
I was gifted the English version by my dear friend who knew my Hindi reading and writing isn't up to the mark, thanks to an early convent education in Bengal where my Hindi teacher taught us Hindi in English! Thankfully I procrastinated and recently discovered the Hindi audiobook version on Storytel. Am I glad I waited!
This book just cannot be enjoyed as much in any other language.
I am struggling to figure out what amazes me more. Was it the outstanding wit or beautifully apt prose or searing satire or such detailed painting of any scene in few words that it literally comes alive in the mind or the fly on the wall kind of observations on even the minutest characteristics of people and rural society or purest form of satire that this entire book is!?
There is just too much greatness happening here.
But I think what truly stands head and shoulders above everything else is the unparalleled use of similes. He has one for literally each and every scene and person and event! They are original and they all are really damn good and apt to boot!
I even tried to remember a few initially for the review later, but soon gave up! They come in thick and fast and are just brilliant and kill multiple birds with one arrow.
He nails the scene, compares it to something totally unrelated but apt, makes a social comment, highlights something glaringly obvious but usually missed and shows the mirror to the reader- all in one phrase and it's simile! Sheer brilliance!
I will not go into the characters or other details as there are enough reviews here for that. All I will say is that there have been few books I have actually worked harder to make the time to read (or listen) as I have for this one. And i loved every juicy second.
The plot and the story-line are downright mundane! But the narration and description is addictive!
I feel proud we have such a beautifully, expressive language. And don't get me wrong, it isn't highfalutin, a lot of it is colloquial which makes it even easier to relate to. The characters jump to life as you move along and become more and more real and soon you think you've known them for years. That is the true mastery. Creating a monumental work out of the everyday, plain lives of people. It is not a small book but I wish it had never ended.
Rural India has not changed much from the 50s-60s this book is set in. The issues are the same. The outlook is the same. The corruption, misogyny, law and order problems, cronyism, etc this book brings alive is all still there, albeit transformed a bit with the changing times.
This is the kind of book that makes you laugh out loud a lot. But ultimately it is a very serious commentary on the larger issues plaguing the society of India.
Having read books of many authors from across the world, I would daresay he is right up there among the greatest. Srilal Shukla Ji I kowtow to you.

It is not always an easy task to create a fictitious town that ends up as real and effective with even the special traits of the inhabitants that are trademark to the place they live in. Very few writers try that as its not cakewalk. Raag Darbari is such an example-where author Shrilal Shukla smoothly make us believe that, yes, this village is for real and even the characters-specially named 'Ganj-ha' are your just another set 0f villagers you must have encountered with, in your life.
Usually I don't read Hindi much as often I feel it too decorated (with traditional tone) or too - desi (you know what I mean) to read in contemporary times, but think by doing so-and by reading translated works, I am missing out a lot. This is one such example, that despite of having a translated version, I tried my hand at original work. And man, believe me, its a ride worth taking. It's been a long time I literally laughed while reading. Written 52 years back, the satires, one-liners are still too politically correct and suits perfect to the current condition of our country-especially the villages. Till date we will see all of them - the self proclaimed leaders, malpractices, wasted youth at 'puliya' (small bridges at highways) 'absolutely clean' bus stands and what not !
Writing is fluid and you get used to the style in very first chapter. However after almost 70% of the chapters done, I felt lag in the flow. Maybe for me, the novelty and amusement got faded or at a few points currency of the situations seem a bit out dated for me? But still, till the end, the characters hold it together well. Wonder how no one has still adapted this for screens yet? Or maybe, recent Panchayat was inspired by this (at a small scale of-course?)

"My way of joking is to tell the truth. It's the funniest joke in the world." said G.B. Shaw. And this book does a complete justice to what he said. Different from fiction that talks about allusions and hints, I like the way facts or reality is a common place in this book; however shitty it might be. This makes it humorous. Shukla captures those moments in any setting, that no one talks about, and mentions it with negligible verbiage and or floweriness. He can be compared to the comedian who would never laugh while cracking a joke but still the jokes are funny. After finishing half the book, it becomes difficult to believe that this is a work of fiction. The village setting and each character is so vivid in my eyes that it seems to be a lie if Shukla has in some way or the other not lived a part of this book. 'Ruppan Babu' is closest to my heart and I feel his complex state of mind in my head, every bit. There are no heros, no villains, no right, nothing wrong or evil. Just exactly how the life is. For me, it is one of the few books that I wish to give more than 5 stars, but alas!
I am writing this review in English so that it could reach the mushrooming Indian middle class who reads English but has Hindi as their first language. A must read in Hindi!

जब आप को� पुस्तक उठात� है� तो निश्चय ही इस बा� की कल्पना करते है� की उसमे� कु� जीवन के दर्श� और सिद्धांतों पर बाते होंगी, जो कभी कभी ज्यादा खिंच जाने पर कु� पाठकों को नीरस लग सकती है. रा�-दरबारी मे� ऐस� कु� नही� है, को� सिद्दांत और उसूल की बाते� नही�. बस भारत के ७० दश� के हालत को ऐसी खूबी के सा� उतरा है की हरेक पंक्ति मे� एक व्यं� और व्यं� ऐस� की हँसी यूँही छू� जाएगी. स्वतंत्रता की कु� अवांछनी� परिणाम जिनक� बारे� मे� दे� के नेताओं ने आजादी के पहले सोचा था और � बा� मे�, को सामाजि� पट� पर लाकर प्रस्तुत कर दिया है. को� ऐसी पंक्ति नही� जिसमें व्यं� � हो, और जो खाली सा हो. घटनाएँ, उनका विवर�, किरदार और उनके� विवर� से आपको को� � को� अपने आस-पा� जरूर या� � जायेगा. जैसे हरेक किरदार समाज के किसी वर्ग का प्रतिनिधित्व कर रह� हो. हम भारतियों की कई समस्याये� है� जो आज़ादी से आजतक बस उलझती ही गयी है...जिनक� हम भारतियों ने भारती� होने का शा� बन� रख� है मसलन गंदगी, या मौका पाते की अंग्रेजी की गो� मे� जा बैठन�, आज़ादी के बा� बंदरबा� से उपजे भ्रष्टाचार और इन सबको संरक्षित रखने की हमारी अतुल्यनी� चाहत और रोज़-रोज़ नायब तरकीबो� के 'इन्वेंशन, इन सब का जायकेदार जिक्� आपको इस किता� मे� मि� जायेगा. किताबे� ऐसी होती है� जिनक� पढने के लि� आपमे� एक पूर्वाकांक्षित ज्ञा� या सम� होना जरूरी हो जाता है. इसमे� ऐस� कु� 'ला�-लझ्झ�' नही� है. बस किता� उठाईये, पढ़ि� और आनंद लीजिये.

Raag Darbari (रा� दरबारी) is a novel so cynical and brutally realistic in its outlook that any other work of fiction appears as an ideological dream sequence. It is one of the saddest tale ever told - the story of India after independence. No, not the partition, but the story of its moral, social, political and intellectual corruption. True to reality, all the people who are even marginally honest and fighting for justice are thoroughly lampooned in the novel by other characters.
The novel is drawn across a fictional village Shivpalganj, where Vaidyaji and his goons are the master manipulators and have control over everything that happens. Though it is confined to this village, even in words of Srilal Shukl, the author, "The entire country has just become a collection of Shivpalganjs."
The worst part is - the novel was published in late 1960s and even after 40 years, the country is the same rotting collection of Shivpalganjs.

भारत के आजादी के बा� गांव की हकीकत बताती यह किता� हसने और रोने दोनो� पर ही मजबु� कर देती है� लेखक ने आजाद हु� दे� के उस हिंदुस्तान का जिक्� किया है जो तब हिंदुस्तान तो था पर माना नही� जाता था� गंजह� के बारे मे� और शिवपाल गं� की स्तिथि आज के गांव से कु� ज्यादा अल� नही� है� मेरा ये किता� उठान� का मकसद उस भारत को देखन� था जिसक� बारे मे� हम कहते नही� थकते के हमार� संस्का� और संस्कृति महान थे� आज तो नही� है, लग� था आजादी के कु� सम� बा� तो रह� होंगे। पर यह किता� पढ़क�, भारत और भारतीयत� की यह जानकारी आज भी पुरातन का� की ही है� हर किरदार की अपनी एक दुनिया है जो उसी मे� खोया हु� समाज को चल� रह� है� जिसे अंग्रेजी मे� unputtable कह� जाता है, यह उनमे� से एक है� गं� मे� भं� के सा� हु� स्वागत से मे� अभिभूत हूं। शायद रंगनाथ की तर� मेरा भी दिमा� पहले के मुताबि� ज्यादा सवालों से घिरा है�
