Quer铆a que me gustara m谩s este libro, provincia, la birra y los pibes y todo eso, adem谩s, el tema de la violencia hacia las mujeres se necesita reflexionar mucho en la ficci贸n y en la no ficci贸n tambi茅n. Pero no me gusta como est谩 escrito, y no pude pasar de eso. De hecho hasta me parece que est谩 escrito justo para hablar sobre la violencia de la forma en que lo hace, como si hubiera tenido la idea, pero no me parece que est谩 bien logrado. Tiene huecos en la narraci贸n, y sent铆 que no estaba en manos de una narradora confiable.

No he parado de llorar. Creo que es lo m谩s tremendo que he le铆do y leer茅 este 2019. Un libro sobre las mujeres desaparecidas en Argentina, que es tambi茅n un poema largo y una suerte de conjuro. Por favor, leedlo.

This remarkable novel gives voice to a character unlike any I've ever met before. The young woman at the center of the story is unnamed and impoverished, and she has a terrible skill thrust on her: After her mother dies violently, this young woman develops a compulsion to eat earth, and the ingested earth gives her a true vision of how her mother died. Soon everyone has heard about and believes in her eerie skill. As she's living in an Argentinian slum where loved ones regularly disappear, and where violence toward women is an everyday fact, she is inundated with petitions for help. How she navigates a world where she is both shunned and respected is an extraordinary reading journey. The first-person voice of the protagonist is what makes the story so compelling: uncomplaining, clear-sighted, compassionate.

Hay algo ajeno a la verdad en las dos estrellas y es que no llegue al final y puedo explicar por qu茅. Primero porque hay que poner tiempo en otras cosas y segundo porque jam谩s lo compr茅, lo iba leyendo parada en una librer铆a mientras esperaba, en la zona de Caballito, que se hiciera la hora para ir al cine. Eso debe ser dicho.
Ahora bien. Hay una confusi贸n en la literatura argentina entre escribir simple (Hornby escribe simple, digamos) y carecer de recursos para escribir. Algunos, otros escritores en general, llevan esa confusi贸n adrede y otros, nuevas camadas de lectores, intuyo no la notan del todo. Lo primero no tiene soluci贸n, tampoco es relevante que la tenga, lo segundo se acomoda con el tiempo, que es lo que necesita la literatura para que el lector florezca.
Dicho esto lo que ac谩 tenemos es un borrador con un estilo que ya es ley, el estilo: sal铆 de un taller literario. Todos m谩s o menos presentan los mismos s铆ntomas, huecos narrativos, exceso de comas producto de poca amabilidad para unir el relato, nula complejidad sobre las razones de las acciones de los personaje, ausencia de ambiguedad y ese patchwork, por darle un nombre, que une p谩ginas que gritan "somos una entrega semanal". Eso, contra lo que se cree, no es escribir.
La biograf铆a sobre la autora nos avisa que es de izquierda, cu谩l? por curiosidad pregunto, y feminista. Y? Relamente...Y? A menos que seas China Mieville no veo la relevancia. Voy a leer un libro o un panfleto pol铆tico o de agitaci贸n. No tengo problema alguno con leer lo segundo, de hecho lo hago, pero cuando voy a leer literatura lo que busco es precisamente leer literatura y no encontrarme con editores advenedizos que tocan los resortes de los temas "del momento". Lo 煤ltimo que quiere un lector es ser subestimado y lo primero que pide, y no le vienen dando, es un desaf铆o.
Luego... dos cosas. O yo ya estoy muy grande o la gente tuvo un lavado de memoria masivo. Aparentemente nadie recuerda una novelita que supo ser crucial para la literatura latinoamericana y un peque帽o per铆odo llamado boom y dentro de ese boom alguien puso mucho en trabajar un librito en donde una mujer se tira contra las paredes a comer cal y la tierra, en todas sus formas, es motivo de tesis doctorales y ensayos al d铆a de hoy. Cien a帽os de soledad se llama y se las recomiendo. Y cerrando, si en el 2020 la provocaci贸n es comparar chupar pija con chupar helado las cosas est谩n realmente dif铆ciles.

Mmmm, me gust贸 y no me gust贸, 驴es v谩lido eso?
Me gust贸 el tono, me encantan las novelas del conurbano y me gust贸 mucho el concepto. Pero no me gust贸 la historia, no me gust贸 la liviandad y no me gust贸 que no me provoc贸 nada. Y no puedo creer eso. Toca temas terribles con una voz bell铆sima, y me result贸 absolutamente indiferente todo el tiempo. Me duele el alma, le hab铆a puesto todas las fichas.

Una novela muy c谩lida, con un lunfardo barrial, sincero, crudo. Una forma interesante de tratar algo tan tr谩gico como los femicidios. Una novela que constantemente toca lo policial, el drama y un toque de 蹿补苍迟补蝉铆补. Los invito a conocer a esta medium de tierra, una mujer que al comer tierra puede ver el paradero exacto de cualquier persona, viva o muerta. Es sencillamente apasionante.

鈥淭he Eartheater鈥� has received much press and hoopla which for me is good and bad. First the good, without the press, I would not have read it. Also, I would have abandoned it, as I wondered what I was not seeing that garnered all the hoopla. The bad, well, I expected more. I had high expectations and I was a tiny bit disappointed.
The story takes place in Argentina, in the barrio. The unnamed narrator is young at the beginning of the story, living in poverty. Her mother was killed, allegedly by her father. Her aunt is raising her and her brother Walter. The narrator eats dirt and has a vision of her missing teacher鈥檚 death. The aunt is embarrassed and leaves the two to raise themselves.
Author, Deloris Reyes, is an Argentinian author and feminist. This novel explores that country鈥檚 neglect of protecting women and also the poverty in the slums (barrios). Reyes showcases the violence against women, and the little that authorities do to stop the violence.
The novel sort of leaps from that first dirt eating to later when the narrator has a reputation in the barrio to be able to 鈥渟ee鈥� what happened to missing people, mostly women, if she eats the earth that the person has walked on. The narrator has dropped out of school and lives with her brother Walter who brings in friends and plays computer games. Suddenly she鈥檚 old enough to go to bars. It could be something that happened in translation from Spanish to English. At any rate, the narrator is asked by a police officer to help him find a missing woman. Others leave bottles of dirt in her yard with notes, asking for help.
After reading this, I looked up other reviews, and one reviewer stated that eating the earth is a metaphor for staying grounded. The same reviewer felt that the slippery time frame was to show that children of poverty and violence find it necessary to grow up very fast.
It鈥檚 a dark story and a sad story. It has opened my eyes up to some of the problems in Argentina, which alone is one of the reasons to read: to learn.
I listened to the audible production, narrated by Frankie Corzo. Julia Sanches is the translator. The translator has a note at the end of the novel. She explains some of her translation choices, as the English language has no feminine and masculine words that occur in Latin languages. Also she informs us that femicide remains widespread in Latin America. In addition, women authors continue to be overlooked on a national scale. Ms. Corzo鈥檚 narration was great.

Cometierra no es una historia amable. No es una obra resumible con la etiqueta de realismo fant谩stico a pesar del argumento y los elementos que la integran. Es denuncia, dolor y sensibilidad. Es protesta y tambi茅n una llamada a la resistencia y la esperanza.
Cuando una ni帽a se derrumba sobre la tumba de su madre y fruto de la desesperaci贸n se lleva a la boca la tierra que cubre el ata煤d, consigue ver al asesino: su propio padre. Poco tiempo despu茅s, su t铆a, superada por las circunstancias y desentendida de cualquier afecto hacia ella y su hermano Walter les abandona dej谩ndoles solos en el mundo. A partir de ese momento deben sobrevivir por sus propios medios; 茅l encuentra trabajo en un taller y ella, poco a poco, comienza a utilizar su don para ayudar a quien se lo pide. Sin embargo, a pesar de su excepcionalidad, no es importante. Es invisible para todos los que no la necesitan y de esa forma casi deja de existir si no es para desempe帽ar su talento olvid谩ndose incluso de su nombre. Todos la llaman 鈥淐ometierra鈥�.
La autora, con una narraci贸n en primera persona cargada de localismos y expresiones acordes a una joven de la clase social m谩s desfavorecida, nos traslada a una peque帽a localidad de la Argentina m谩s empobrecida donde la violencia, las muertes y las desapariciones est谩n a la orden del d铆a y donde la polic铆a, inmersa en un bucle de inoperancia y racismo, es el ejemplo m谩s palpable del fallo y la desprotecci贸n del sistema.
Buscando constantemente calor humano, con su maestra de infancia fallecida que le habla en sue帽os como 煤nica amiga y a veces repudiada por su don, ayuda a quien se lo pide (normalmente otras mujeres), arriesgando su vida y sacrificando su bienestar. Comer tierra es un proceso doloroso, desagradable en s铆 mismo que le induce visiones duras en las que empatiza con las v铆ctimas sinti茅ndose afectada. Y a pesar de su altruismo y su buen coraz贸n pronto confirma que la soledad, el abandono y la negaci贸n de ayuda por parte de los dem谩s ser谩 una constante en su vida. Pero superando las decepciones seguir谩 intentando abrirse a la vida, descubrir谩 el amor y vivir谩 el sexo de una forma instintiva y pasional, extensi贸n de sus sentimientos, hasta que tenga que decidir si continuar o no por un camino que anula su propia identidad.
Esta maravillosa novela que descubr铆 en El Blog Aurisecular es un canto a la mujer, a煤n hoy en d铆a maltratada, desprotegida e invisible en muchas partes del mundo. La mujer como ser que generalmente antepone a los dem谩s frente a s铆 misma evitando alterar el orden establecido. Pero tambi茅n es un llamamiento a romper esas cadenas y elegir un camino propio.

Dolores Reyes hace su debut literario con una novela dura, corta en extensi贸n pero cargada de desesperaci贸n, de angustia, de p茅rdida. Un retrato de la vida en los sectores m谩s pobres de la sociedad, de la juventud, el miedo, la tragedia que se enreda en la cotidianidad.
Una de las virtudes fundamentales de la historia es su ambientaci贸n, clara, veros铆mil, casi tangible. El realismo m谩gico tan h谩bilmente trazado que es imposible cuestionarlo, no cuando a su alrededor se irgue tanta aut茅ntica pena, tanta irrefrenable e injustificada violencia.
Vale la pena leerlo, vale la pena dejarse perseguir por su eco porque lo que Reyes tiene que decir, su historia de muerte, de ausentes, demanda ser escuchada. No hay vulgaridad alguna en su relato, mucho menos un car谩cter corrupto.
Repudio fuertemente cualquier intento de censura hacia esta novela de parte de un sector pol铆tico que claramente no lee y que no entiende nada de lo que consume.

I thought going in this was going to be a sort of cultural tourism thing with an eating disorder, and... I was so wrong! It's a loving, angry, sad, proud look at a culture and a reality that I think can speak to all of us.
CONTENT WARNING:
Things to love:
-Women who love men. There's a joke a comedian told where they knew sexuality wasn't a choice because why the hell would women choose to pursue men if anything else were an option. And this was all of that but without the laughs. The dual consciousness of loving certain men, of wanting to be intimate, of knowing they're safe or respectful or what have you *to you at least* and also knowing that others are just looking for the right moment to hurt you or someone else is exceptionally well captured here. It's messy and hurt and chilly and loving all at once.
-The magic. The Bruja traditions are woven in deftly, adding a layer of mysticism and feverishness to an already chaotic setting. You can see how this environment would work well with this sort of lore.
-No answers. So often books like this feel so personal and angry or preachy, which is totally valid but also sometimes breaks immersion. This book doesn't do any of the work for you. It just offers up facts and consequences and lets you do with them what you will, which feels very effective in this instance.
I'm trying to pin down what made it different from a book I "love" and I think it's a few things. The translator does a great translator's note that explained some of the choices, but it wasn't exactly "perfect" for my American reading style. That is minor though. Another minor thing is that it's a sideways sort of story with a sideways progression of events and it sometimes left me a bit out of joint. Not in a bad way, just it kept me wondering about meta elements which then meant some of my attention was not on the details. I'm also ambivalent about the ending which I think is in part another stroke of genius but also is vaguely unsatisfying.
In short, I think this is brilliant but maybe I didn't love the experience of reading it, if that makes sense. I hope it does, because it's what I've got! Go read it and be all spun about yourself!

-The magic. The Bruja traditions are woven in deftly, adding a layer of mysticism and feverishness to an already chaotic setting. You can see how this environment would work well with this sort of lore.
-No answers. So often books like this feel so personal and angry or preachy, which is totally valid but also sometimes breaks immersion. This book doesn't do any of the work for you. It just offers up facts and consequences and lets you do with them what you will, which feels very effective in this instance.
I'm trying to pin down what made it different from a book I "love" and I think it's a few things. The translator does a great translator's note that explained some of the choices, but it wasn't exactly "perfect" for my American reading style. That is minor though. Another minor thing is that it's a sideways sort of story with a sideways progression of events and it sometimes left me a bit out of joint. Not in a bad way, just it kept me wondering about meta elements which then meant some of my attention was not on the details. I'm also ambivalent about the ending which I think is in part another stroke of genius but also is vaguely unsatisfying.
In short, I think this is brilliant but maybe I didn't love the experience of reading it, if that makes sense. I hope it does, because it's what I've got! Go read it and be all spun about yourself!

Le ten铆a muchas expectativas a este libro por todo lo que hab铆a le铆do en las redes sociales y por el hecho de que transmit铆a un mensaje ligado a la violencia de g茅nero. Mi problema es que ese mensaje, a m铆 por lo menos, nunca me lleg贸. S铆 habla a veces del tema con ciertos casos, pero la idea se va perdiendo a lo largo de la historia y ya para el final es inexistente. No me gust贸 c贸mo estaba escrito, s煤per confuso y nada era claro. Demasiados 鈥渉oyos鈥� en la trama, nada es concluyente y muchos personajes hasta parecen irrelevantes. Era una muy buena idea pero fue bien llevada a cabo.

The supernatural ability to eat earth and have visions of missing or dead people in a place rife with violence and despair is an overwhelming curse for one young woman. Super dark and painfully falls short of my sense of justice鈥攎y heart was devastated by all the loss and suffering. Compelling storytelling. In my humble opinion, I feel like this is a story about how some gifts are wasted on the youth鈥攖he unnamed protagonist squandered this ability to see missing/struggling women. She just didn鈥檛 want it. She wanted to dance and experiment sexually and hang out with her brother and his friends. You could tell by the way she spoke about her Aunt visiting her dreams鈥ad. Just a melancholy tale

While reading this book, it was hard to believe the author hadn't known everything I love about stories and created this just for me. This one checked all my boxes. Magical realism (check), feminism and violence against women (check), people at the fringe (check), introversion (check), murder investigations (check), showing women being resilient while still being realistically affected by trauma (check), Latin America - Buenos Aires specifically (check), the feeling of being adrift (check), a sense of disconnection from material possessions (check), fiction in translation (check). My expectations were high and this story exceeded them.
The ending was well balanced. Grey enough where the serious and complicated story isn't wrapped up in a nice bow. But tidy enough to make me feel satisfied.
Also, what a beautiful cover.
For reasons I don't understand, even though the text was originally written in Spanish, the Spanish language version isn't available in the US yet. The translators note at the end mentioned the Spanish text being hyper local and I can't wait to dig into the original text itself and deepen my appreciation for the Spanish language.

El "contenido sexual" del libro, por el cual el actual gobierno puso el foco y que por esa raz贸n no quiere que se distribuya en colegios, no es m谩s que 3 o 4 p谩ginas dentro de las 176 que tiene en total.
En cambio, la novela aborda otros temas que s铆 son m谩s importantes y se deber铆an considerar:
-Femicidios
-La Justicia haciendo nada (como casi siempre)
-Realidades del Conurbano Bonaerense
-Realidades de la gente de escasos recursos
Y yo creo que al gobierno s铆 le deber铆a interesar m谩s esos temas, pero no pasa as铆. 驴Sabes por qu茅? Porque solo le interesa la gente de altos recursos, leer algo en el que no se sientan parte de la mugre. Quieren ciencia ficci贸n donde la realidad es otra, donde est谩 todo bien, donde sobre todo se pueda generar guita. Pero no es el caso.
Esto es Argentina. Y no hay que hacerle o铆dos sordos a este tipo de historias, porque son las que nos hace reflexionar.

Es un libro r谩pido de leer a pesar de los temas complicados y violentos que narra. Sin embargo, siento que la historia tiene muchos hilos sueltos, que se le notan costuras b谩sicas de estructura y que podr铆a haber resuelto y detallado m谩s sobre la vida de Cometierra que es una personaje: INCRE脥BLE. La idea en general es muy atrapante, que una adolescente coma tierra y con esto adivine en donde est谩n muertos y desaparecidos es de verdad algo que no hab铆a le铆do antes o visto tratado de esta manera, sin embargo, no termina de convencerme c贸mo la historia se lleva a cabo y sobre todo que haya personajes aparecen de la nada y nunca les da seguimiento. Hubiera querido saber m谩s. Espero que se le d茅 una revisi贸n a la historia porque tiene mucho potencial.

Empezaba a ver que los que buscan a una persona tienen algo, una marca cerca de los ojos, de la boca, la mezcla de dolor, de bronca, de fuerza, de espera, hecha cuerpo. Algo roto, en donde vive el que no vuelve.鈥�
Un tema duro que promet铆a convertirse en una lectura de las que generan un nudo en el est贸mago, dif铆cil de digerir. Empieza muy bien, presentando el don de una jovenc铆sima cometierra que, como en un trance, conecta con las desaparecidas, las olvidadas por el sistema, para intentar dar una respuesta a sus familias y aliviar el dolor de la incertidumbre. Sus visiones y sue帽os me resultaban interesantes pero hac铆a la mitad del libro la historia se pierde en banalidades que te sacan de la historia. Una buena idea muy poco aprovechada, esperaba otra cosa.

Historia dura, una mezcla de feminismo, santer铆a y realismo m谩gico. Una chica es capaz de "ver" a las personas comi茅ndose la tierra con la que han estado en contacto. Por desgracia esto le trae m谩s problemas que ventajas, ya que la mayor parte de las personas que "ve" son personas desaparecidas, cuyos familiares solicitan su ayuda para encontrarlas, la mayor铆a de ellas mujeres, secuestradas, violadas y asesinadas. El miedo a lo que acaba encontrando le hace cada vez mas dif铆cil comer para "ver" y su 煤nica salida es huir y dejarlo todo atr谩s.
Entre el lenguaje coloquial, los localismos (argentinos) y la triste realidad suburbial reflejada en el libro, la verdad es que no he disfrutado demasiado de la lectura. Eso si, original es.

En su primera novela, Dolores rescata la memoria de quienes no la tiene: desaparecen y la polic铆a no hace nada por hallarles. Una chica an贸nima, de la cual solo conocemos a su hermano y retazos de una historia tr谩gica, tiene la habilidad de comer tierra y tener visiones que le permiten saber que ha sucedido quienes han pisado ese lugar. Es as铆 como en su primera visi贸n ve el femicidio de su profesora Ana, que seguir谩 apareciendo en sue帽os para guiarla y a veces, atormentarla. Vemos en sus p谩ginas el rescate de un dolor y una esperanza de quienes buscan de manera ag贸nica a sus desaparecidas y desaparecidos. En una novela extra帽a, porque tiene una magia con tragedias que se esconden entre l铆neas. Es una lectura muy r谩pida, pero de una cr铆tica social ante un sistema que no busca y no realiza todo lo posible por encontrar a quienes desaparecen, sobre todo a mujeres pobres o chicas adolescentes que no dejan rastro y se asume de inmediato que han huido; donde el papel de esta protagonista ser谩 clave para esclarecerlo todo. Un gran debut literario.

"Yo la hab铆a dibujado como la tierra me la mostr贸"
Una historia muy particular, la idea de c贸mo la protagonista puede ver el pasado y comunicarse con este me pareci贸 muy llamativa. La tierra es el gran testigo de todo lo que hacemos y desde ah铆 ya me atrajo mucho lo que este libro quiz谩s me iba a contar.
Si bien me gust贸 lo que me cont贸, no me encant贸 por la manera en la que lo hac铆a, capitulos demasiado cortos, escenas x que no me sumaban, porque ya hab铆a contextualizaci贸n y sent铆a que no eran necesarias, incluso con lo corta y r谩pida que es la historia.
La relaci贸n de la protagonista con su hermano y lo cruda de la realidad que nos muestra y plantea me ha gustado mucho.
Una historia muy particular, la idea de c贸mo la protagonista puede ver el pasado y comunicarse con este me pareci贸 muy llamativa. La tierra es el gran testigo de todo lo que hacemos y desde ah铆 ya me atrajo mucho lo que este libro quiz谩s me iba a contar.
Si bien me gust贸 lo que me cont贸, no me encant贸 por la manera en la que lo hac铆a, capitulos demasiado cortos, escenas x que no me sumaban, porque ya hab铆a contextualizaci贸n y sent铆a que no eran necesarias, incluso con lo corta y r谩pida que es la historia.
La relaci贸n de la protagonista con su hermano y lo cruda de la realidad que nos muestra y plantea me ha gustado mucho.

This is one of those books that are beautiful and depressing at the same time. I don't know the original, but the translation worked wonderfully in bringing across the harsh living conditions of the protagonist while still infusing a sense of wonder over the ability of the main character to learn about the whereabouts of missing/dead people when eating earth that came from a place they were connected with.
It starts at the funeral of her mother who has met a violent death when the mc still is a child. From there it goes on in glimpses of her life as she is forced to grow up much faster than a child should. She is shunned because of her ability, but at the same time people want her help. They bring her earth in bottles with a short note and a number or address for contact. Never talking directly to her, just leaving the bottles in her garden. The picture of all those bottles, behind each one stands the cruel fate of a girl or woman, being rained on in her garden is one of the most heart shattering and impressive in the novel.
"Eartheater" is an intense look at an underdog society where violence, especially against women, is the norm. The protagonist, who tellingly never is given a name, is depicted realistically in her inner conflict of just caring for herself and her brother to somehow get through life when nobody is willing to support her and the moral obligation to help others that her ability has dumped on her.
I was deeply moved by this debut novel.
