Broken Ashes #3

Whispered Warnings - Part Two

Rate this book
The problems keep on piling up, we need to fix the breach quickly before something else manages to get through. I can't avoid the poker game again or I will risk making Ernie mad.

Of course, nothing is ever simple, not even a poker game or the trip to the training academy.

I end up causing more trouble than I intended to and very nearly end up getting my dead situation found out by an unexpected HID agent.

So when a blast from the past ends up throwing me another curve ball, and I have to drop everything to help, it seems like it may be a blessing in disguise . . . Or is it?

I don’t even want to get into my supe side or the sword or the spirit guides or the guys . . . Yeah, I think an escape is just what we need.

Ireland, here we come.

This is a paranormal Reverse Harem.

Good

WARNING! Cliffhanger! Theoretically, this is a reasonably big cliffhanger, which would normally put it fairly high on the trauma scale BUT it’s not at all unexpected, and Neith’s reaction to it is just enough to make everyone grin in anticipation!

Picking up from the cliffhanger ending of book two, we find our heroes dealing with the broken ward.
Then it’s time for a poker game with Ernie, a day at the training academy, lots of interesting research and revelations, finally ending with a trip to Ireland.
There aren’t many shenanigans from the spirit guides, but there’s a sword naming, sword shenanigans, and a sentient house (my personal favourite new character), who also is prone to shenanigans!

A fun addition to this series, there’s just enough revelations to give us ideas without actually revealing anything big (yet)!
It’s an engrossing story, with some great characters, an intriguing plot, and some excellent world building.
I admit, I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens next!

This is not a standalone, so while I do recommend the series as a whole for the RH fantasy enthusiast, I will say you absolutely need to read the first two books in the series before this one!

Personal Reading Reminders/Notes

<>

The ward is rebuilt, extra strong when Neith falls into it.
Strange figure with tree powers is there, but only Doc sees him, and forgets him.
They do some research, but most useful information comes from Sully.
At the poker game we learn all the players are the supernatural rulers, Neith plays for favours and never uses them, River ends up out alpha-ing the head alpha.
The head dragon Draith, tells them demons used to ride dragons into battle in the old world, and Reed is invited to play with them (since he’s a demon).
They also learn that they’ll get used to Reed’s powers if exposed, and he starts to let them out when around just them.
Sully reveals a little about Kelpies and that they could bond with them and work with them, also that his wife is still in the Otherworld and is the one who cast the silencing spell on them all.
During research Neith learns her sword can be a bit of a trouble maker, but has great powers.
At the training academy Neith proves adept at helping others fix their issues in flying and combat, Neith meets the draconians- one of whom is a friend to them all (Coen), but who is somehow controlled by the idiot draconian in charge. Neith vows to help.
Neith gets a call from an old friend in Ireland about some missing people and disturbing video. On arrival, they realise it’s more hybrids.
Neith’s sentient house, House, is introduced.
They learn from the hybrid that the one experimenting won’t be there again, but that Dimitri is involved.
Neith sees Raiden’s wings and convinces him to practise flying.
They go to get Neith’s evidence against Dimitri, and have a massive vision: it’s about the battle in the Otherworld that led to the evacuation through the portals. A blue guy wanted to experiment on people, and when the king said no, he started the war.
Sully’s wife made a spell to make sure his name is unable to be said (apparently lent power by the gods?)
Van’s parents were the leaders of the sirens and water creatures.
After the vision, the tide comes in and Van (since he’s a Siren) uses his water abilities to help.
Like most of the others, he suddenly seems more powerful, and this seems to be the Neith effect! At least that’s my theory.
Draconians trigger the choosing, not unexpected, and Neith is glad to get the chance to figure out what they’ve done to Coen.
I’m hoping that the choosing will end up bonding him to Neith and the guys, which will hopefully break the idiot’s hold on him. Also I’m inclined to believe Neith’s parents might be the King and Queen.

Really Slow but Good

The core storyline is very intriguing but the overall story is really dragging out. This is book 3 and really nothing but questions keep getting brought. No answers are being given/ found and there's not even interesting or fun spicy 🔥🌶️🔥🌶️ times to help.

The author said she anticipates like 7 books in this series & if this is how they are all going to be I don't know if I'll continue to read. Also the ADHD rambling was funny & relatable in the 1st couple of books but now it's just annoying filler.

Amazing

I think this was the best book in the series so far. We learned so many more new things, plus a lot more questions. But the next book is fling to be even better i can feel it.

The series started great. Each book after went down a star or two.

The first book was great. I loved her quirkiness and weirdness. The book had a story to tell and was moving in the right direction. The instant attraction and men instantly besotted and thinking everything she said and did was amazing was a bit much but overall not so bad. Second book didn’t have as much of a story but still was entertaining with things happening here and there. AND of course with how awesome the lead female is and how different and SPECIAL she is. The third book. (Granted I’m 24% through) but I swear if I hear how DIFFERENT/SPECIAL/AMAZING/UNIQUE she is one more time I will throw my kindle. It’s a very cute story but I’m tired over how over the top the females horn is being tooted. I’m having to skip pages just to get to something exciting.

Great

Whispered warnings
Neith and her guys have been through alot in this book, nothing to major but the plot moved along really well. We got a glimpse more about her history through Sully, Ernie’s and the Visions at the end. Everything is so secretive, it’s driving them all batty including myself.
I loved how the Kelpies all seemed to gravitate to one of her men, they came at the end of the last book due to a skirmish with some kind of small reavers out for selling kelpie body parts. They destroyed them all and then they realized that their ward had been breached. Off them went to the hole in the ward, and they discussed needing everyone’s magic to build the ward up, and that’s when all the supernatural creatures showed up that lived in the forest with them. Tiny Sprites, rock trolls, the imps, her spirit guides. They all pitched in, on top do the guys. It’s a running joke that Neith doesn’t like being told what to do so when it comes time for her power to be added to the mix, it refuses to budge. It then makes a tree branch grow to trip her into the ward which then explodes with her energy and power, making it impossible for anyone to breach it again, or as it’s told anyways.
There’s a strange guy one of the guys saw on the other side of the ward before it gotf ixed that winked at Doc but he promptly forgot it. A spell of some sort.
I loved how she has a magical house! It keeps all intruders out but her and who she deemed worthy. It makes things like breakfast/dinner, heats and cools the house when needed on its own. Neith is worried that when she finds the actual deed owner of the house she won’t be able to buy it because they will realize what a treasure the house is. It’s located in Ireland, a country I have always wanted to visit.
The video they watched of the hybrid was hard to read and then finding him and talking to him while he pleaded for their help to end him. Our resident Reaper was able to heal his soul before moving him to the spirit realm which made the journey bitter sweet. Poor guy had no idea what happened, just described being in total darkness. This also has Neith telling the guys she heard voices which they realize are the dead. Sully tells her that the reaper can help her by saying a few Latin words which actually silences them. Neith felt to weird not hearing them so didn’t silence them again which I think will be helpful because they help her when magical attacks happen against her. Neith also tells them about her tracking ability that comes online at times. Aparently it’s temperamental and she hasn’t figured out why it won’t help in some situations and others won’t.
They found information about her new enchanted sword Asael. That’s his name. Mysterious powers that Neith had the pleasure of using when she was about to die from the kelpies in the last book, and many skirmishes in this book. A magical burst, power lightening up the blade to cut like butter are two of the things it can do besides appearing in her hand when she’s threatened.
She heads to the academy with the guys since they teach. She was in on Griffs defensive flying class and helped some people giving her confidence that maybe she can help teach ppl even if she’s still somewhat human and can’t fly. She remembers her time at the Draconian keep with her friend Coen who turns up at combat class. The draconian team are just massive jerks yelling and screaming at their recruits and demands one fight Neith. She lays him out and then teaches him the manoeuvres. Which pisses off the Draconian leaders who are just plain bullies. They demand she fight a guy that has everyone immediately stiffen up. Turns out it’s Coen and he pretends not to know her, which she clues into pretty quick. They fight before he tells her she needs to end it because he can’t and he’s fighting her for real. She can tell he’s being controlled and once she tells the guys later on about how she knows him and how he taught her all about flying it’s then they all realize they haven’t seen him shift in years. It’s all on their minds now that maybe he didn’t choose the draconian team on purpose when teams were being made. The guys feel awful for not pushing harder as Coen was a friend of theirs in the academy growing up.
I did find it a bit elementary in regards to all the questions they plan on asking Neiths spirit guardians and old friend Sully. They say the same thing, oh it will be great to finally get some answers, but it never happens. They can’t answer their questions, it’s like a broken record at some points in the book. Otherwise I really enjoyed this book. I wish there was more romance than a kiss here and there but the story and the characters interactions kept the book going and my interest at an all time high. Great story!

Hmmm Immersive.

Good and bad things with this one, that leaves this series at a solid 3* for me.

Neith is a complex character and it takes a while to get into the flow of her characterisation. That being said, it's also what makes this series unique, you have to pay attention. She's strong yet extremely vulnerable too, I can easily root for that, it's endearing.

Book 3 and we still have no idea what Neith is, not who (it's easy to guess now) the question is definitely a what.

Her MMCs are coming together. We like strong capable men. Being around Neith they are getting stronger, learning about their powers is interesting for them too. Thing is though, they are all.. nice... One off the rails would be nice. Just saying!!. I'm enjoying the natural way their relationships are evolving. For those of you who like smut, this isn't for you. This is very much so a slow burn, Neith may have a potty mouth but that's about it. I'm so here for it, if this had been a smutty series it would have been a dnf.

This brings me to some of my issues, there are so many roadblocks, they can't be intimate because... Can't know about Neithes' powers because... Can't catch the bad guy because... Can't be a team because.... So on and so forth.... What we then get is a lot of theories that go round and round in circles. A tad bit annoying that.

One other thing, it's nice to read about heroines who actually eat, not use the scene as a prop.

Would I recommend? Yes. But with pinches of patience.

Interesting read

Honestly there are so many feelings I’ve felt while reading this book. Mainly confusion and curiosity. Confusion as in why are there so many point of views in one chapter instead of spread out in multiple chapters. I feel like this book could have been combined with the second book instead of making it a part 2 book just to have the story flow a bit better. Obviously we got a lot more answers about Neith and finally the slow slow burn has sped up a bit, maybe we’re getting somewhere with that! There was actually so much to learn in this book about Neith and her past as well as the past of other supernaturals, especially in the end. That last couple of chapters were very intriguing and I’m honestly excited to learn more about what happened and who Neith’s parents truly are. I want to know about Coen too and what’s up with him. Like is he being controlled by his team? And what’s going on with Dimitri? Neith said one day he changed out of nowhere, what if something is controlling him too? So many questions I have. Anyway, I do recommend this book if you want to get through the series! The writing could be a bit better seeing the issues with runon sentences and repetitive sentences. I’m excited to see how the storyline goes tho!

DNF at 74%, and I'm sad because it could be so much better.

There was too much but at the same time nothing going on if that makes sense. We are already on book 3 and all she has done is kiss two of them. Also, we're on book 3 and it's still only been like a week since the first book. There is so much rambling and over explaining that more time could have passed without that.

I'm definitely over how perfect and special she is at everything. She just knows how to do everything, and she becomes friends very quickly with others. She is friendly with super-powerful people, yet she was always almost starving.

I already thought there were too many men in her harem, and it looks like the author might be adding a dragon and possibly the guy she saw in the other realm. So that would be like 9? That's a little ridiculous.

There are also so many different plot lines and scenes that don't add anything other than extra words. The whole scene with the HID agent trying to get a job. Dimitri and whatever happened before him. Something is going to be weird about the house in Ireland, I'm sure. And how many scenes do we need to see of them eating? Like, food is her whole personality.

And why did we need a whole chapter from Navy's point of view?

Argh I love this series!

Neith is a force of nature. I absolutely love how fierce & protective she is but also how crazy her banter is with herself & the guys. She stays having me cackling at her commentary.

In this book we see the follow up of the breach in their security & a bit more explanation of the kelpies. She is slowly starting to get more information about who she is & who her parents were. But of course, there are still blocks on everyone so it’s like pulling teeth trying to get answers.

Her & the guys also end up in Ireland to help a friend of Neith’s which leads to more questions in regards to the hybrids that are causing trouble but also with that weird vision they got sucked into, more questions about where she comes from.

Yet again, I was hooked & pulled into this book just like the last & it has left me absolutely wanting more.

Amazing job!

Wow!

Wow, not sure there is another word for this amazingly entertaining enjoyable story! Nikita Parmenter has written an exceptional entertaining fun story. Not a big fan of the cliffhanger, but with so much going on totally understandable. Neith and her guys are sexy, fun and totally badass, and so much happening the suspense is nonstop. I know book 4 is coming, but it almost feels there is to much left that it could be two possibly more, just won’t know until Nikita comes out with book 4. Thank you Nikita your writing is fun, exciting and I can’t wait to read what comes up next.

Whispered Warnings, Part 2, book three of the Broken Ashes series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). The dialog and character relationships, both primary and secondary, make this series one of my favorite reads so far from this writer; although, I will say the characters lose much of distinction by using the same phrases. If I see the word 'cool' one more time, I just may start substituting other words to change things up (that was so not-on-my-bingo-card, or, that was pretty awesomesauce). It would improve my reading experience if the characters had more distinction in their speech. That said, I can't wait for the next book to see where this story line is going.

Enchanting

As always absolutely amazing
The ongoing story has me transfixed and I will be rereading the whole series again soon! Because i just can't stay away from it.
I love the way the characters develop and their back story being slowly revealed in ways that make sense.
Yes there are so many questions I want answered but I know it will happen as it should
I was so transfixed on the story that the end just... appeared! Very shocking!

Omg

If I didn't love this author so much.... Do you know how hard it is to leave Neith? I know she's going go kick butt but how long can I wait to find out.? If you've never read any of Ms. Paris here's books start with Finding Home before anything else. It will give you a good idea of her style in world and character building. But the burn here is so slow nothing has even happened, yet you won't comp!ain cause the story itself is worth it.

Good

My only criticism of this book in particular is the use of the phrase "thank f*ck". It is used in the other books once or twice but it's so over used in this book it's cringe worthy. Great story line....I'm really digging these characters but can they please have a few more brain cells so they can say something else beside "thank f*ck". It sounds stupid and it makes them sound stupid.

Boo! I have to wait for the next one!

So good - we are getting better character development which is refreshing!

This book was slow going compared to the last two, and I did struggle to keep my interest, but only because I like to know what is happening, and there is just a bunch of I’ll find out eventually - really frustrating! BUT I loved it and would recommend- this one is a bit more on world build I guess -

Still number one

I'm at loss, Clegg is just can't be any better or so I thought but wrong the more I read the more I love. Nieth is the sassy lobbing funny heroine we all dreamed of being, the fact she has no problem saying all those things you wish you could say out loud, mainly the truth, is wonderful. This set of books so far might be one for the keep pile. Number four here we come.

Amazing

I fall more in love with Nikita with each book! Well, the book ends in a cliffhanger as to be expected since there’s two more in the series, it ends on a point that wraps up the whole book. I’m absolutely in love with Winston and can’t wait to hear more about the odd connections the main character has.

Part 2, book 3

Much improved from book 2, this one has lots of action and relationships begin to warm. Neith still remains mostly human and the men fear physical relations with humans would hurt her. Bits of her history are revealed and new characters, including a magic house, are introduced.

This was good!

Lots of stuff going on in this book, we get to meet a bunch of new characters, and get more hints into Neith's background.
Overall really good..
Just wish there was more development on the relationship front. Beyond a few kisses, there is no romance.
But really enjoying the story, and looking forward to book 4.

Favorite author. Another wonderful read. I love the creatures, the mystery, the slow burn romance. I can’t wait for more. I always find myself glued to my seat with my nose deep in the pages. It’s hard to pick a favorite from NP but this is one of my favorite series. 100 out 10 would recommend.

just wow with a cliffhanger

There's absolutely so much going on and the book definitely has a fast pace but it's full of mystery truths old friends and new... neith and her men are constantly on the go and it's just solving one thing to have another question! The slow burn is amazing and seeing the growth each of the main characters are having is amazing!
