If her love life is going down in flames, she might as well spark a revolution.

Finding out on your sixteenth birthday you’re a shape-shifting dragon is tough to swallow. Being hauled off to an elite boarding school is enough to choke on.

Since Bryn is the only crossbreed at the Institute for Excellence, all eyes are on her, but it’s a particular black dragon, Zavien, who catches her attention.

Zavien is tired of the Council’s rules. Segregated clans, being told who to love, and close-minded leaders make freedom of choice almost impossible. The new girl with the striped hair is a breath of fresh air, and with Bryn’s help, they may be able to change the rules.

At the Institute, old grudges, new crushes, and death threats are all part of a normal day for Bryn. She’ll need to learn to control her dragon powers if she wants to make it through her first year at school. But even focusing on staying alive is difficult when you’re falling for someone you can't have.

Before reading:

I really hope I will somehow manage to have this book in my hands. it sounds like nothing I have read before so I really, really want to read it (ASAP).

After reading:

2,5 stars

I have to admit it, I judge a book by it's cover. When I first saw a cover for this book and read it's blurb, I wanted to read it really bad.

So after expressing my interest for Going Down in Flames the writer contacted me with a question if I would like to receive a free copy in an exchange for an honest review. Of course I said yes.

Now, after reading it, I kinda feel bad about writing my review since I didn't like the book all that much. I really, really wanted to.
I guess it was just not my cup of tea.

So this story follows Bryn, a 16 year old girl who finds out she is a shape shifting dragon who's parents are rejected from their society because they married each other. You see, Bryn's parents are not the same type of dragons, and in the dragon world, it is strictly forbidden to be with someone who is not the same type of dragon as you.

After Brynn finds out she is a dragon, she is sent to a special school for her specie where she is exploring the new world and where she founds out someone wants her death. You see, Bryn is a half-breed, and she shouldn't exist in the first place.

There is another secret society of dragons who see Bryn as a perfect tool for displacing the Directorate.

This story had a promising start, an unique universe and an attractive main character.
I really liked how it contains a different types of dragons, how every dragon type has a special ability and uniqueness.

Some scenes were really well described.
for example: the scene when Bryn for the first time sees the sky with all sorts of flying dragons. It is a scene where you just want to transport yourself into that world and witness the beauty of it.

What killed the story for me is the writing style. I'm sorry to say that.
It is just over detailed. It came to that point where I just wanted to stop reading. If I wasn't obligated for writing a review I would have.

I get that Bryn likes animal prints but I really don't need to know what kind of animals she wears on her panties every time she changes them. Her bra and pajama included.

Other thing: the food. OMG! I got a feeling the writer was on some extreme diet and was obsessed with the food. So she fed her book characters. I mean, I get that Bryn likes sugar and can eat as much as she wants to without getting weight, but come on! I really, really don't need to know what Bryn or her friends are eating EVERY SINGLE TIME they eat.
This book contains more food then any other book I have EVER read, including those with an eating disorder theme.

When something happens, and we already read about it, we don't need to read it again when Bryn is describing it to her friends. We already read it, move on!

There is just one more thing I'll state: I'm not sure this story is over. It is a stand-alone according to goodreads but it doesn't feel this way. There are too many questions left open.

conclusion: good potential but the finished product is not so good. I wish the writer had better editors because this story could have been great.

I'm dnfing this "without prejudice" (rating). I like Cannon's YA romances so I thought I'd give this UF a try. It's not for me. I can't get past the background setup because it doesn't work for me, politically. A system that stratifies on immutable racial bounds (dragon clans/colors) will be one fraught with conflict even if you don't have one clan inexorably on top. Add an expectation of arranged marriages that have to be approved by "the directorate" (the clan on top) and you have an intolerable system ripe for rebellion. There's literally nothing in this system for anyone but the blues and telling teens that they are going to marry when they graduate college and then telling them who they'll be marrying with no choice to them has never worked very well and even less so in the modern age.

I was already set on stopping, but then I read blurbs for the remaining books for the series. And just no. Bryn ends up coopted into this system and defending it and I just can't even.

Again, all of this is ancillary to the story and it's a personal problem that I can't get past it. Cannon is good with character and plot and it's an interesting setup. If you can roll with it. I can't.

After what felt like a little bit of a cliché start with the whole runaway parents and sixteenth birthday thing, this book picked up dramatically and I found myself flying through it. Originally it reminded me a lot of Firebolt by Adrienne Woods (which was my first dragon book) and what set Going Down in Flames apart was the world building.

It’s safe to say that no matter how awesome it would be to be a dragon, I would not want to live in this society under the Dictators sorry I meant Directorate Learning about their beyond strict rules and prejudices was enough to make my stomach turn! Bryn felt much the same and we follow her as she tries to get by in a school run by people who hate her for no other reason than the fact she’s a hybrid of two different dragon clans - which are awesome by the way with their different colours and affinities.

Bryn’s character is simply brilliant. Through being bombarded by information at the start you’re immediately in the same boat and her reactions were so genuine that it was impossible not to like her. The added snarky attitude and ability to give out as much as she got in respond to bullying sealed the deal.

Of course not everyone had it out for Bryn and she made some great friends along the way. Ivy and Clint had personalities that jumped from the pages and their presences always brightened the scene. Zavien is another matter with very hot-and-cold behaviour that meant it took a while for me to warm up to him. By the end of the book I could kind of understand why Bryn was interested and now can’t wait to see how their relationship progresses (or doesn’t?) in the sequel.

With a kick-ass heroine, villain you love to hate, interesting society and did I mention dragons? Going Down in Flames is a book you do not want to miss.

Going down in flames is a teen read about a girl who discovers she is a Shifter-Dragon. Bryn is on her way home from school when she notices someone following her. Her eyes are open to new possibilities. Her family are outcasts but that doesn't mean she won't be sucked into the shifter world. All dragons have to attend a special school to help them develop their talents.

Dragon-shifters live by the rules of the Directorate. They get the job they are influenced to study. They marry a dragon of the same breed and stature. Bryn is the exception to the rule. Her parents ran away together. She is both a blue and red dragon. She has abilities she shouldn't. Bryn isn't going to have an easy ride. People are mean and she doesn't fit. With the help of some friends, she has to find her place. Dragons are known to have tempers and this makes a fiery read. The story fits perfectly for the teen audience.

This book is the start of a series. It's a complete story but will leave you with questions. Luckily there are another 4 books to sink your teeth into. Book 5- Burning Bright is due out on 4th June 2018.

Ìý

I'm not sure because I have no time to ransack Ìýmy shelf but I think this is my first book about dragons. And maybe this is too much Game Of Thrones but every time a Dragon is mentioned, my mind just automatically thinks Khaleesi. Yep, too much GoT. Anyway, Going Down in Flames is a light read. And I'm not complaining. Dragons are there but I found the story more concentrated on their worlds politics and Bryns coping on living with people who doesn't like her that much. And of course, about her and Zavien.Ìý

According to the other dragons, Bryn is an abomination. A mistake. And maybe he is if it's all baded on theor worlds rules. The dragons are classified into Clans: which re the Blue, Red, Green, Black and Orange. In their world, only a Blue can marry a Blue, a Black can only a Black and so on. But Bryns dad is a Black and her mom is a Blue. So yeah, she is an abomibation.

I like Bryn flare as a main character. She's sassy and clumsy in a very adorable way. Too witty for her own good too. I think she acts as a 16 years old accurately.Ìý

"So, not only am I a dragon, I'm the child of social outcasts. This keeps getting better and better"

Like I said, she's sassy. And I like her so much for that. There were times that she can a little boy crazy but she's being bullied so I'm letting that one slide because that can be her only entertainment.

Every characters in here are actually wonderful. Zavien is the only one I want to know more. He is just soooo mysterious that I'm getting impatiemt. I WANT A ZAVIEN POV! I know I'm not the only one. Being mysterious and broody is cool.. but come on! Let me peek inside his handsome brain.Ìý

I am asking this because that's one of my not-so-good Ìýebcounter with the book. I'm a hopeless romantic I guess and I don't buy Zavier's words. I ship him with Bryn but he's too suspicious. See. I don't know what to think anymore. Bryns parents are the coolest. I'm really a fan of her mother's cool demeanor and her Dad's i'm-gonna-kick-your-ass aura. And they truly love and care for their daughter. AND THEY ARE BOTH ALIVE. That doesn't happen in YA that much.

"Do not take crap from anyone.... You are as good as they are." - Bryns Dad.

Someone needs to hold me right npw and tell me there'll be a sequel because it can't end that way! I'm looking forward to what's gonna happen between Bryn and Zavien and... Jaxon? Going Down in Flames is perfect for readers who are looking for spunky heroine that can fire someone with fire or ice with huff. The dragon aspect will draw you in and Bryn will entertain you.Ìý

*THIS* is the YA I love and miss. It is not your typical angst-ridden, dystopian love triangle that saturates the genre today. Plus, a HUGE bonus (in my book) is that there are no werewolves, vampires, or fairies of any kind. There are DRAGONS. In YA. Need I say more?

You have your sassy (but not b**chy) 16-year-old girl who just found out she is the daughter of two different Clans of dragonshifters who fled their dragon society in order to be together. Because intermarriage between Clans is forbidden, Bryn is not supposed to exist and is an outcast. When she discovers that not only can she shift but has numerous dragon powers as well, she is forced to attend dragon boarding school to hone her abilities. Once there, she is not only shunned but fears for her life after two failed murder attempts.

The way the book ends is kind of abrupt, but of course this is the first in yet another series. Overall, this was a delightfully, fun read that is a departure from the monotony that has become the currently over-used YA trope du jour.

Oh my gosh. I'm finished? I'm finished!
Since I apparently relish giving extremely precise ratings, I'm giving this an actual rating of 4.75 stars. That's just how I roll.

I'm in love. I'm in love. I'm in love with this book.

Sorry. Spongebob is like the only way to express these inner emotions :P

I started it out thinking this might just be an another slightly amusing, if not corny dragon book. But then, from the very first page, Bryn was established as a no-nonsense kind of girl. Then, it turns out her parents have been hiding something from her: they're runaways from a society of shape shifting dragons! If that's not an interesting birthday present, I don't know what is. I thought it was a little unbelievable how relatively nonchalant the whole family acted at this turning point, but I couldn't care less because I was already sucked into the story.

Then, going into this part??

“Here’s my advice for the day: there are few problems in the world sugar and fat can’t solve. Now that you’ve shifted, you can eat as much as you want and not gain weight.

Forget about it. Dragons have such a high metabolism that this girl can stuff her face like I can do only in my dreams?! Now, this is my kind of story!

It reminded me of elements from Harry Potter and The Black Mage AND Born at Midnight BUT INSTEAD OF PEOPLE, YOU HAVE DRAGONS.

description

And this was some legit story-telling. Everything moved along at a great pace for me and I connected to ALL the characters (whether good or bad). Adding onto that, I haven't laughed with this much consistency since reading "Graceling" or "The Darkworld". The dialogue was probably the best part about the story.

Continuing the singing of praises:
Bryn wasn't a heroine that was utterly lost and useless whenever her love interest wasn't around. She had quite the temper, she could hold her own, and she could make snippy comebacks when she needed to. The story line is pieced together well and the world building is actually coherent and believable. I can see how this book is only for some people however, so I'd say to read a sample of the book and see if the writing style is for you. That's what I did, anyway. And look how that turned out for me! I immediately bought it, read it in 1 day, and for the majority of my reading experience, I looked like this:

description

I feel like this is like a prequel to the real stuff happening. It's a good way to introduce us to the our colorful cast of characters and explain their unique situations in society and the world they live in. In the next book I'm hoping more badass kickassery will go down (yeah I just coined that phrase). That being said.... ON TO BOOK TWO!

This book was a fun, easy read. However I had an issue with the main characters contradictory morals. I thought it was rather galling that she was disgusted with the prospect of being someone's mistress, yet finds no issue in dating an engaged man. My other qualm was that the plot was rather predictable. This doesn't make it a bad novel, despite my complaining I did enjoy this.

Going down in flames would make a great summer read/rainy day read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. 3.5/5

Mention of fire in the title of Going Down in Flames got my dragon detection sense tingling. Reading the summary confirmed my hunch there will be dragons in this book. In fact heroine Bryn is a dragon-shifter. Urban fantasy with dragons? You know I had to read it!

Going Down in Flames start with an usual young adult novel plot: Bryn is stalked by some creepy (but handsome) guy and then she discovers that she is special and has hidden powers. I must admit, I was a little bit turned down in the beginning because it all sounded familiar. But soon I forgot to complain about the cliches because I got immersed into the interesting world of dragon-shifters.

Being a dragon-shifter has a lot of advantages:
- Eating as much as you want and not gaining weight. “Bryn burned through her stress, literally.
- Shooting fireballs at everyone who annoys you.
- Flying!
- Going to elite boarding school.
- All of your new friends are dragons.

BUT, there are downsides too:
"Acid surged from her stomach and shot up her throat, burning her esophagus. Pressure built in her chest. She coughed. Her lungs constricted. She cleared her throat and opened her mouth to speak. Flames exploded out of her mouth and shot across the room, setting the kitchen curtains on fire."
Blowing fire does not sound like a pleasant experience. More like a bad case of heartburn.

Chris Cannon invented a world of modern dragons that is intriguing and very complex. Dragon-shifters have different powers based on their color, are divided in clans and have strict rules for everything (even dating and marriage). And since our heroine is new to the dragon world, we get to be acquainted with it along with her. I know it’s a cliche, but this is still one of the best ways to do world-building. Something new appears and Bryn and you will exclaim together: “Wow, what’s that?

Another aspect of Going Down in Flames I liked is Bryn’s friendship with Clint and Ivy. Clint was especially funny and full of puns. It reminded me of my high school buddies, friendly teasing and adventures we had together. Happy times! *sigh*

One big flaw of Going Down in Flames by Chris Cannon that I must point out is that it’s not a standalone novel. I’m guessing it’s a first book in a series, because it ends in a big cliffhanger. I wish there was an info about this on cover or book title page, I would have been a little bit less surprised.

In The End

If you like young adult urban fantasy novels set in boarding school with dragons then you should check out Going Down in Flames by Chris Cannon. It’s fun and easy to read perfect for the summer. There might be a couple of usual cliches in the plot and heroine is sometimes too hot-tempered to think rationally, but it’s still quick and entertaining read.

4.5 stars!! It’s actually been a while since I’ve read a YA paranormal story. And what a great way to get back into the genre! This book was everything I hoped it would be…wonderful characters, an interesting setting filled with both good and evil, twists and turns and mystery, and, of course, dragons!

This story starts with a bang. And, although this is jarring and doesn’t give us much time to get to know the characters, it works here. We’re immediately thrown into a world that no one, not even the main character, expects. Just before her 16th birthday, Bryn discovers that she’s a dragon. And, not only is she a mythical creature, she’s also the child of two types of dragons blue and red something that’s never happened before. Her learning curve is steep and she’s not given much time to absorb the news, but this leap into the story allows us our first peek at her strength. Bryn is feisty and intelligent and a fighter. I love that about her! She’s always thinking steps ahead and her inner monologue is quite humorous at times too. And these characteristics make her the perfect hero because readers are not given even one moment to breath before the story takes off and the adventure begins. Bryn faces all types of hostility and prejudice because of her unusual lineage but she’s brave and resilient time and time again.

There are a few other characters who also won my heart. Clint and Ivy, two dragons who look beyond her differences and become her friends, are warm, funny, and they balance Bryn’s character nicely. Zavien, the reluctant love interest, is dreamy and I really need to know more about him. He’s the perfect mix of mysterious and sexy. And then there’s Jaxon. He’s Bryn’s arch nemeses but he’s quite intriguing too…I may actually find him more than interesting…but we’ll leave it at that for now!! lol

I’m really hoping this is the first book in this series because there is so much more story to be told. Dragon society is rooted in old fashioned beliefs and Bryn has an uphill battle if she’s to help change that. Her enemies have plans for her and they’re not going to stop just because I’ve read the last page. And, don’t even get me started about the budding romance…I need to know more!! So, I’m hoping that Ms. Cannon is hard at work on the second book because I definitely need more Bryn, Zavien and Jaxon…soon!!

I loooved this book! My favorite genre is paranormal romance (usually vampires), but Chris Cannon has opened the door to dragons for me! Bryn is a great main character! She doesn't conform, she's witty, and is "a breath of fresh air" at the Institute. Her love interest, Zavian, is exactly what you want him to be, though I'm kind of into Valmont too ;-)! I would definitely recommend this book (and have via Facebook, Twitter, G+ and word of mouth) to anyone that is looking for a great read! Yes,I got book hangover from staying up waaay too late to finish it lol! I can't wait for the 2nd (and 3rd and 4th...) book(s) in the series to be released!

While at times juvenile and a bit over exaggerated I did enjoy this novel.

I did however find Bryn to be whiny. I considered giving this a 3 star for that alone.

I really liked her friends and Zavian. But I found all there customs to be very strange.

I hope in the next book not so many people try to kill her.

I find it a bit icky that someone who is married and 10 years older than her wants her as a mistress.

Overall enjoyable and I look forward to the next book.

This was so fun! I alternately giggled and stressed my way through it. I haven't read a dragon story like it, and the creativity was very entertaining. Naturally, I had to start book two seconds after ending book one...just can't let go of these characters yet.

On reread, this is full 4 stars of goodness, maybe even more. The things I listed below still existed, but I just didn't care as much b/c I LOVED all the rest of it. Bryn is an AWESOME heroine, so spunky and hilarious! Can't wait to read book 2!!

Original review:
3.5 stars -- OK this was a surprise in a few different ways. Crap, but first: I received a copy of this book through netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

OK, so I started this book and was immediately hit with a "wait, whoa!" And not in a good way. This book launches us immediately into Bryn learning about her dragon heritage....which can be a mixed bag. Yes, it's nice to get right down to the meat of the story. My "wait, whoa!" moment came b/c I hadn't had ANY time to get to know Bryn AT ALL, and then all this information was being blasted at both me and her, and I couldn't help but think to myself "OK, I know the fire coming out her mouth is kind of hard to set aside, but wow she's really accepting of this." It all just seemed a bit...easy? Unrealistic? I mean, maybe if we'd had some background, and she'd always thought there was something strange about her family....or maybe if she'd started with little clues (like smoke coming out her mouth when she's mad), but it's like BAM! And she has a couple moments where she *thinks* she should be hysterical, but instead she just sort of shrugs and says "OK". So I was worried. I really thought the plot sounded cool, but this was not starting off on a Lenore-approved note. Never fear readers, if you have it in you -- STICK WITH THIS BOOK!

I ended up just going with the flow and accepting it, albeit with some wariness, and somewhere when she gets settled in the school I started to get a better feel for Bryn, and then the story really sucked me in. So while the beginning is still a nay mark for me, the rest of the book sucked me in and took me on a ride. In some ways it reminded me of a very strange cross between Harry Potter and Rachel Higginson's Starcrossed series....just in a few basic ways. You have a 16 year old girl who gets the surprise of her life discovering a whole other world that exists (and she's a part of)....she's kind of an outcast, especially at school. She goes off and has to live away from her parents in a dorm. She learns a lot about this whole new world. There's even a Hogsmeade type town. So it had a bit of homey familiarity to it that let me hunker right down.

Bryn was fun, and sassy, and holy fiery temper. I LOVED her huge appetite, and she had some great banter with so many of the other characters. Zavien was suitably mysterious and sexy. Ivy and Clint were ADORABLE together. Merrick amused me to no end. Even Jaxon, Rhianna and Lillith were intriguing characters "from the other side".

In the end there were still a lot of things that bothered me about this book, but I think it has a bit of "first book-itis". There were parts that maybe didn't need to be in there (Keegan? Beth at the beginning?) unless they'll be fleshed out in later books. And the book ended rather abruptly. I knew it was a series, so it wasn't that I was expecting a huge wrap up, but....I don't know. It felt like the end of a chapter.

Despite all that, I thoroughly enjoyed the world, thoroughly enjoyed the characters, and look forward to seeing where this series will go.

I LOVE anything dragon related! So I was sure I was going to like this book. Add in a sexist society with a kicka** heroine and you know it's going to be an awesome read!

I loved the way Bryn thinks. She says the first thing that comes to mind. Though sometimes (MOST times) that may get her into trouble, it was what I found the most lovable in her. Considering she's only 16, she acted childish in a few moments in the book, but it'll let it slide because of her age. The only problem I had when it comes to Bryn and her Dragon is that everything came WAY too easily. I just think that she should have had a harder time with flying and the cool color/healing power she had going on.

I didn't really like the love interest...well interestS. One (Zavien) was part of a radical group trying and failing to change the laws.

"You're like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One minute you're nice, and the next minute you're obnoxious."

The second (Merick) wanted her as a mistress and was 10 YEARS older then her and most importantly married. To say the least, I was rolling my eyes when she thought much of one or the other.

"If she spotted him, she'd blast him to cinder. And then she'd be the one going to jail because being a presumptuous, adulterous a**hat was legal in polite dragon society, while flash-frying said a**hat was not."

The "villain", I don't know if you could actually call Ferrin that (since the REAL villain comes to light in the last pages of the book). The only way I can describe him is as the 'good' villain. Does that make sense? The same way he acts like a demigod, he acts like a 5 year old who wants revenge on something idiotic that happened 19 years ago. He's not really a level headed leader who I'd trust the governing of a society to.

"You haven't changed at all. You still have a God complex."

The end was expected because of the events that took place in the last few chapters. I wasn't really satisfied with it. A lot of plot points are still left in open, even though I wouldn't consider it a cliffhanger it comes VERY close. I'm not talking about a suspenseful cliffhanger, but a cliffhanger when you're kind of left out to dry too long and feel uneasy (if that description made any sense...?).

Conclusion: I am looking forward to Book #2!

Favorite Quotes:

"I threatened him with bodily harm. He promised to bring me cake for the rest of my life. We worked it out."

"Living a simple life full of love had to be better then living an extravagant life full of hate."

"They taught me to stand up for myself."

I received a review copy of this book for my stop on the blog tour at .

Bryn is a hybrid dragon - her mom is a Blue, her dad is a Red - who can breathe fire or ice. She's snarky, strong, and unwilling to back down from a challenge. Those qualities make her a kick ass heroine and just the right dragon to incite change in the archaic ways dragons have been forced to live for so long by their governing body, the Directorate.

Bryn has a crush on Zavien, but I didn't. I think she was too quick to forgive him when he'd act like a first class jerk. She'd come close to crying, he'd apologize, and she'd forgive him right away. I'd stay mad for at least a day, especially when he confessed he was manipulating her emotions. Maybe I'd even stay angry at him for a week! I figured there had to be more to his story than what first appeared.

I loved Mr. Stanton, the head of the Green dragons and Bryn's teacher for Elemental Science. He doesn't look at her the same way most do - he sees her as having potential to do amazing things. I could tell from their first meeting he would be a person of authority whom she could trust and confide in. He's one of my favorite characters. I also really liked Ivy and Clint, two black dragons who soon become friends with Bryn. It was nice to see she wouldn't be completely alone.

Some of the remarks other students made were downright horrendous, especially the Blues. One blue dragon female told her her mother should've had an abortion. The Blues were the most hateful and treated her worse than the other groups did by far. Even some of the teachers treated Bryn terribly, like Mrs. Hanfelder, the history teacher.

I knew history was going to be a problem class for Bryn since her parents are well known for running away as they did and not following the Directorate's rules. The first day of class, she tells the class crossbreeding can't produce a functional dragon. Obviously, she's not only spiteful but also dead wrong. She tells Bryn she's an abomination who should have been put down at birth. But then I was ecstatic when Bryn came back with, "Do all the teachers at this school attack their students? Or are you just a raving bitch?" I probably would've cried, but not Bryn. I love a heroine with a lot of spunk!

Overall, Going Down in Flames is a book I loved - it's fun with a lot of humor and exciting with a lot of adventure. I loved Bryn to pieces - she's exactly the kind of lead female character YA books need.

"Going Down in Flames" is the first in an intriguing series about people who can shift into dragons. In this unique world, dragons look completely human but can shift when so desired. They are also born with certain magical abilities. For instance, some can breathe fire, while others produce ice, and still others produce electricity. Dragons also live in a very structured society with rigid social classes and forced betrothals/marriages. These restrictions are mostly based on birth and color (e.g. blue dragons, red dragons, orange dragons, etc.). The colors appear on the scales (you get the color of your parents) and in general appearance as a human (e.g. skin, hair color).

The book begins abruptly when Bryn is followed by a strange guy, Zavien, who eventually reveals himself and her to be a dragon (it cuts right to the chase!). Upon speaking with her parents, she learns that they are outcasts- her mother was a blue dragon (ice) while her father was a red dragon (fire). The Directorate (blue dragons who rule over everyone else with an iron fist) has told everyone that mixed dragon colors can't produce viable offspring, so her parents were shocked when they got pregnant and ran away. Now that Bryn is almost 16 years old, her powers are coming out and they can't hide their secret much longer.

To add to these changes, Bryn finds out the Directorate is forcing her to attend a boarding school, the Institute for Excellence, away from her parents and friends. The beginning of the book moves fast (hooray! No waiting forever to get to the meat of the story) and soon Bryn is at the Institute, adjusting not only to a whole society she didn't know existed but also to being a social pariah. Luckily, she has Zavien, who is hoping to change some of the harsher laws for dragons, and her new friends Ivy and Clint.

As Bryn soon learns, the dragon world is more complex and filled with dangers than she could have imagined. With forbidden romances (but very clean- only some kisses), indecent proposals, and attempts on her life, the Institute is anything but boring. Add to this dragons and magic, and you've got a winning YA fantasy series!

I have actually read these books out of order, so I can say that the first one is a little more smash-cut/fast-paced than the later books where the author has really hit her stride. On the one hand, it moves so quickly, there's never any time for the agony of a drawn out scene. On the other, the build up to romance and other events (e.g. the knight taking his helm), never feel as significant as they would with a slower build. I had mixed feelings with regards to the pace. As for the plot, I absolutely loved it! I was hooked from page one, and absolutely devoured the book! Reading them in order may have been better for plot continuity, but they are written so well that I had no problem following the plot out of order. I highly recommend picking up this fun YA series!!

Please note that I received a digital copy from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.

A week before her 16th birthday, Bryn notices that a strange (yet attractive) boy has been stalking her. When she finally has a confrontation with him, he tells her some outrageous things, such as her being a dragon and can breathe fire. When Bryn tells her parents about the strange boy's words, they don't deny it, in fact, they actually confirm his tale. Bryn is an anomaly, a hybrid dragon offspring from 2 different types of dragons. Bryn now must face this new world she knows nothing about, where she is seen as abnormal, while a rebellion is brewing close to the surface.

I absolutely loved the concept of this book. This is the first time that I have ever read a book about a female shapeshifting dragon, making this story unique right from the start. The story was able to capture the feelings of a teen girl, while at the same time incorporate all kinds of supernatural elements, politics and the caste system of the different colored dragons. There was a little bit of everything in this story to keep me on my toes.

I enjoyed Bryn's spunk. She does not take anything lying down, instead she heads into it swinging. She is the narrator of the story so the reader gets to learn the complexities of this dangerous exciting world right along with her. It kinda sorta felt like a female Harry Potter meets dragons (and I mean that in the best possible way) where there is a whole Dragon special town the students can go to and how everyone knows who Bryn is (she is totally infamous) and her back story. She was so in the dark about everything I wanted to wrap her in bubble wrap.
Did I mention the hunky love interest Zavien?? And Jaxon has definitely peaked my interest...I want to know what role he will play in Bryn's life

I am so glad that I got the opportunity to read the first book in this series and now I can't wait to see what will happen next. If you like strong female characters who don't need to be saved and cuss like a sailor, as well as some complicated supernatural adventures, then this is a book for you to pick up. I will most certainly read the rest of the series and I look forward to more from this author.

I received this title in return for my honest review.

I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The first part of the book was exciting and all fast fast fast revelations!! And kinda like a sit-com XP But after that, there wasn't really that much happening for a while. The pace just slumped. And it became boring, honestly.
I kinda put the book down for a while :/ *guilty look* Took a while to convince myself to finish it.......which is part of the reason for this late review *holds up hands in surrender* I knowww, I knowwww, that's a terrible excuse (I also had a busy week full of math and daaance rehearsals–the comps have officially begun *crowd cheers*–like literally, lately it's been a house rule or sumfin that you're either doing schoolwork, doing chores, dancing, eating, or sleeping *scowls and hugs Cazza tightly* don't let it drag me into a dank dungeon with no GR and friendsss! *wails*) XD but I'm glad I did continue the book because it slugged itself out of the mud and started up again at a more modest pace, but this time it actually maintained it's pacing *sticks out tongue*

The beginning was the best XD Like, duuudeeee it was hilarioussssss ;P I kept bombarding Cazza with my cackling antics *grins*
Unfortunately it didn't last. It was like da author used up all her jokes early on and then......ran out o.O Poohhh *pouts* But still, the book wasn't half bad overall, especially for a debut crack at YA......

The concept was a little too generic. Young adult finds out she's a dragon and goes to a dragon school where she's one of a kind and everyone else looks at her like she's a serial killer or sumfin XD *mock glares at these peeps* come onnn don't be too harsh to Bryn sure she's different, but so are youuu.....or have you forgotten that you're all shape shifting dragons?? *snickers*
But back on topic, you remember what we want right?
...*crickets chirp*...
*rolls eyes* Fiiineee I'll spell it out for ya'll :P
#WeNeedDiverseBooks dun dunn duuunnnnnnn! xD
Yeaahhh Cannon must've missed the tweeting procession *sigh*

MC aka Bryn: I couldn't really connect to her that much :/ In fact, none of da characters seemed very believable to me, but whatevehhh. That's my opinion.
And one thing that annoyed me is that Cannon didn't express Bryn's looks......yaahh knoww......*slight laugh*.....if she's pwettyy or not? XD It always annoys me to no end when authors somehow manage to make their charries uncategorizable *unimpressed look*
Still, she was an entertaining charrie XP
Snarkyy? Check. Self–confident? Average. Kickass? Unconfirmed. Stubborn? Check. A dragon? Check. Can change appearance at will? Check. Smart? *shrugs* XD Calm? Nopeee *pops the p* Mature? Errr *coughs* Temper? Double check!

But whyyyyyyy? Whyyyyyy did she have to choose Zavien the spiky-haired malcontent??? *cracks up* Her grandfather's words, not miiinee XDD
Seriously tho -__- Me no likey spiky-haired, tattooed goth type guys!! >:/
Ooookayyy I may be exaggerating just a teensy bit :P *ducks head*.......but just sayin' *defensive look*
Valmont on the other hand......*nods approvingly* Why couldn't she like Valmont her handsome knight in shining armour.......literally? xD *whines* He's so much bettahhh XP *swoons* Short black hair, ice blue eyes, a dimpleee *leans head in palm and sighs dreamily*

Fight scenes.....meh. Honestly I was hoping for more in this department, but all we got was a tiiinnyyy bit of dispassionate fighting, and Bryn and a certain annoying charrie called Jaxon trading fireballs and snowballs at each other's heads XPP Not really 'trading' tho.....if you catch mah drift *evil laugh*
Ooohhhh and that reminds me! The coughing fireballs and snowballs thing o.O That's just weird. I mean, suuuree a dragon breathing fire.....even a dragon breathing snow is ookayyy on the weird scale, but humans exhaling fire and snow.......not so much XDD

Even tho they're dragon shifters, you'd think they can only do the mojo stuff in dragon form.....right? *raises eyebrows*

Also, I think there was a bit of misinformation in the tagline *frowns* I kept waiting for this professed revolution o.O
25% way through: *squints at pages*
50% way through: *taps pen on table*
75% way through: *bounces knee and sighs*
100% way through: o.O *facedesk*
Whaaat revolution??? *confuzzled look* Suuureee some peeps are against the Directorate's rule, but they were against the Directorate's rule long before she popped outta the woodwork, she hasn't become a symbol of rebellion or anythang like Katniss in THG, and she certainly hasn't organised a rebellion o.O All she's done in relation to the Directorate is manage to convince half the students not to hate on her.....and if you're wondering.....the other half still do XDD

Bookish Revelation: Is that Quintessence in her hair??? *squints at book cover* Hmmm ;D And if you're wondering what Quintessence is, here's a blurb from da book....
“Quintessence is the essence of all things. It’s the very stuff life is made of. Learn to manipulate it, and you will be able to do simple spells. Learn to control it, and you could do anything.
Mmmm XDD So they're not just dragons, they're also magicians of sorts ;P *rubs hands together and smirks* And Bryn seems to be a naturale at controlling it *winks*

The ending seems open and hinting to the possibility of a sequel, tho like the last e-arc I read, Cinderella's Dress, there was no actual cliff-hanger, soooo yeaahhh. *shrugs* Maybe, maybe not.....XP
3 stars. Booyaahhh :P

First half of the book wasn't to my liking. If it hadn't been for the second half my rating would be 3 stars. The book was going on too fast in the beginning, in my opinion, whilst in other parts dragged on.
Was entertaining and in some moments I laughed out loud. Bryn is very whiny and ungrateful and her whole center is herself. Don't know why anyone bothers with those attempts on her life cos yeah she is different but I see no threat in her other than she can't keep her mouth shut. Which I can't seem to do either so, cheers to similarities.
Interested to read more!

I have a very hard time rating a book 4 stars and an even harder time eating one 5 stars, but I really enjoyed this book. It was a lot of fun, had a good story, and very relatable characters (besides being dragons, lol). I recommend this book

Loved this book (and the other 4). Very clever with fun characters and a great concept. It definitely has predictability in a lot of the storyline, but it's still very clever and has parts that you probably won't see coming.

Easy read and worth it!
