Karen Horney was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1885 and studied at the University of Berlin, receiving her medical degree in 1913. From 1914 to 1918 she studied psychiatry at Berlin-Lankwitz, Germany, and from 1918 to 1932 taught at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute. She participated in many international congresses, among them the historic discussion of lay analysis, chaired by Sigmund Freud.


Dr. Horney came to the United States in 1932 and for two years was Associate Director of the Psychoanalytic Institute, Chicago. In 1934 she came to New York and was a member of the teaching staff of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute until 1941, when she became one of the founders of the Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis and the American Institute for Psychoanalysis.


In Neurosis and Human Growth, Dr. Horney discusses the neurotic process as a special form of the human development, the antithesis of healthy growth. She unfolds the different stages of this situation, describing neurotic claims, the tyranny or inner dictates and the neurotic's solutions for relieving the tensions of conflict in such emotional attitudes as domination, self-effacement, dependency, or resignation. Throughout, she outlines with penetrating insight the forces that work for and against the person's realization of his or her potentialities.


This 40th Anniversary Edition includes a new preface by Stephanie Steinfeld, Ph.D., and Jeffrey Rubin, M.D., of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis.

Karen Horney was a German psychoanalyst. Her theories questioned some traditional Freudian views, particularly his theory of sexuality, as well as the instinct orientation of psychoanalysis and its genetic psychology. As such, she is often classified as Neo-Freudian.

Outstanding. But I do have to place some caveats: This is not a book for the light reader browsing through the "self help" section. It's an intricately articulate and researched analysis of human being's dysfunctional mechanisms. You do not need to have a background in psychology... but you do have to have intellectual endurance.

Keep in mind that this book was written 60 years ago. The language is a bit outdated. It was written by a woman who was trying to be taken seriously in a very male dominated field. Karen has some perspectives that can be outdated on some sociological issues. However, the foundation of her logic is impressive if you can overlook some of the outdated examples.

I would normally give a book with the above flaws no more than 4 stars. However, I cannot get past the fact that Karen was a powerfully forward thinking individual for her time with solid points that are developed from a diverse number of angles. The flaws are human. The book is profound.

I would have enjoyed meeting this woman (had she not died before I was born) and I wonder what her work would have been like had she lived longer.

If you are willing to put aside time to read this book with minimal interruption (you will need the focus) you will find it an exceptional source of answers for why human beings suffer from the "Tyranny of the Should" and other deeply ingrained perspectives that foster suffering and self deception.

In sum: This is the book for those who want solid, logical answers for why people think the way they think.

Neurosis and Human Growth: The Struggle Toward Self-Realization is the magnum opus of German-American psychoanalyst Karen Horney. In it she outlines her theory of neurosis. In Horney's view, the key difference between neurosis and healthy growth is the difference between compulsive actions fueled by anxiety and spontaneous actions fueled by one's full range of emotions. If a person grows up able to maintain his or her spontaneity, that person grows up by a process which Horney calls self-realization. *Audiobook review*
You know when you read (listen :P) a book and wonder if the author has been spying on you for your entire life? I think this one will do that to many people.

The narrator, Heather Henderson, was surprisingly absorbing with this type of text. If only my school teachers presented like her in all those dry subjects, I would have way better grades.

This was a very good introduction to neurotic behaviors and a very interesting story of my life. But who is to say the neurotic is doing it wrong? This is not a self help book so we are not told how to live our lives, which is refreshing. It simply points out that sometimes we can be too hard on ourselves in the path to dream perfect selves. It doesn't say that we shouldn't also strive to better ourselves. It's just that sometimes we get caught up in the image of who we want to be and ignore the work that is required to get there.

That and many other things, Neurosis and Human Growth introduces us to many tricks our mind can play on us on the path to personal growth. Reading this is a good way to realize if we are suffering from neurotic behaviors yet it is not a fix. Neurosis is a milder form of mental illness and extreme cases should be taken to a professional.

Personally, suffering from self-effacing behaviors, as the author calls it, I am more aware that I am quite hard on myself. For example, writing this review is extremely nerve wracking but for no good reason. I鈥檓 afraid it鈥檚 not good enough and I should be writing perfect reviews all the time. We can be too critical of our own work yet are not willing to work at it to become better.

The main kicker for me is this book has been written 1950 and it very much does not show its age. It basically describes what we label the young as 鈥渕illennials鈥� (stereotype I hate) yet don鈥檛 realize these behaviors have been present for many generations.

So here's to the long road of slowly working at my hobbies, getting better with practice and being okay with where I am now.

I usually am suspicious of female authors, especially when it comes to psychology. It may be sexist to say so, but I have always find the gap between the different modes of thinking to be unbridgeable. This book was a pleasant surprise.
The author's main contention is that neurosis is a peculiarly human affliction and that it takes the form of what we would call the "personality." The author argues that this personality is, in reality, a pseudo-self that spends its valuable energies on pseudo-goals and thus bring us unhappiness. The central conflict that our psyche revolves around is the the conflict between the "pseudo-self" that we have erected, and our real self.
If this book is read carefully,it can be a life-changing experience that causes you to question deeply who you really are, and what you really stand for. Highly recommended.

I can't say it has changed my life but it has moved me several steps forward what I am supposed to become.

Compelling and satisfying in her explanations. I particularly loved the love part and the compelling need of the self-effacing neurotic type in the search of love. Also, the detached neurotic type made great sense to me, a way to solve the conflicts is not to solve at all, not to feel. Hitherto the most reasonable way of explaining neuroses, with an understandable language and accurate descriptions.

Total fan of hers.

Heavy on the scholarship, but holy crap...if you have any kind of neurosis/neuroses, you'll be reading your life's story within Karen Horney's analysis of neuroses, in general. Her books made me understand and that's all you really need to do, in the end. She makes sense of our inner conflicts, great and small. This won't solve the problem, but it will shine a light on it, and that has made all the difference.

God bless you Karen Horney because you left a heritage so important that sheds the light on our struggles to understand ourselves. I bow in respect to your figure.


My review won't do justice to how important Horney's theory of neurosis. The book demands your unwavering attention and introspection. It's not a book, in my opinion, to be treated like any other book, to be glossed over, read lightly, looking for easy answers or a magic pill to cure our psychological ailments. Karen Horney presents, convincingly, that actual growth takes serious effort and remarkably points to the fact that even in trying to rid ourselves from our neurotic tendencies is itself neurotic. To be a normal human being and to admit your humanity is a very difficult affair.

I have yet to grasp the full extent of the message of this seminal work. If you are seeking to understand yourself in an attempt to improve your psychological wellbeing, this book is for you.

I can鈥檛 recommend this book enough. It has been truly life changing for me. I was a little skeptical when my uncle recommended this book to me, as I thought neurosis to be a rare psychological phenomena, and certainly one I never thought I would have. After reading this book, it became clear to me that not only myself, but pretty much everyone around me is somewhat neurotic. Once you read this book, there is no going back. After reading this book, I knew that I was of the 鈥渟elf-effacing鈥� type and it shouldn鈥檛 come as a surprise since the society I grew up in endorses the detrimental idea of putting everyone else and their needs before your own. I will definitely be reading more from Karen Horney because I absolutely loved the eloquence with which she describes our innermost processes. One of the best and most practical self help books I鈥檝e ever read, and definitely one I will be going back to for a long time.

This is one of the top five books I have ever read in my life, as a layperson. I've read that Horney and Eric Fromm are thought to be more neo-Adlerians (Alfred Adler) than neo-Freudians (as they are often called), but regardless, I feel this book enhanced my understanding of the human condition more than any other book I've read on the subject (though I do like Carl Rogers for more "Okay, so what now?" approach). Here's six thousand words of my notes, hand typed from the ancient 400-page library book which I borrowed.

Humans naturally grow towards self-realization. This means trying to fulfill all their human potentialities. When someone grows healthily, they eventually realize they are part of a connected whole, and try to contribute to all of humanity with their gifts, whatever they are. People fail to grow in this way, however, due to estrangement from their 鈥渞eal self鈥�, whatever it is that they truly want, think, believe; they then waste their productive energies into molding himself into his idealized image (usurping that energy from self-realization). 鈥淸Neurosis is] a process that breeds conflicts and a need for their solution. But, since the solutions the individual finds are only artificial ones, new conflicts arise which again call for new solutions鈥攚hich may allow him to function in a fairly smooth way... [driving] him farther and farther away from his real self... [endangering] personal growth.鈥� 鈥淚nstead of developing a basic confidence in self and others the child developed basic anxiety, which I defined as a feeling of being isolated and helpless toward a world potentially hostile... [with] compulsive [responses] collid[ing].鈥� The idealized self forms the basis for his 鈥減ride system,鈥� a feeling of identity, a way to derive power and significance. He then idealizes those characteristics which compromise his life solution into virtues, I.e. compliance as goodness, aggressiveness in asserting egocentric claims as strength, aversion to work as avoiding the deadly habit of work, etc. 鈥淗is capacity for this unconscious reversal of values is perfectly amazing... people afflicted with some undesirable trait take a brush, paint over the trait with beautiful colors, and present with blustering pride the picture of their assets.鈥� Alienation occurs due to the difference between the idealized, Godlike self of perfection, which does not measure up to the real self, and is the basis for neurosis, and all the frustrations which then arise. 鈥渢he godlike being is bound to hate his actual being... Neurosis now became a disturbance in one鈥檚 relation to self and to others.鈥� This process is not altogether conscious, and is often unconscious. 鈥淚t would hardly occur to a cocker spaniel that he is 鈥榬eally鈥� an Irish setter.鈥�; thus, the process of alienation from real self is a uniquely human process. In addition to idealized perfection, the neurotic idealizes ambition, and wants vindictive triumph; 鈥減eople in the clutches of ambition are but little related to the content of what they are doing. What counts is the excelling itself...鈥� this is an important distinction, because people can switch from one task to another, see it as self-growth, but it is really just a move from one task at which they can accel to another; one does not care about climbing the mountain, he just wants to be on top. The life emphasis then 鈥渟hifts from being to appearing.鈥� 鈥�...when they do attain more money, more power, they also come to feel the whole impact of the futility of their chase. They do not secure any more peace of mind, inner security, or joy of living. The inner distress... is still as great as ever... one might rightly say the whole pursuit of success is intrinsically unrealistic.鈥� Finally, 鈥渢he feeling of grandeur, increasing with every triumph, render[s] it increasingly intolerable that anybody... should not recognize his grandeur鈥� (this with regard to Hitler). 鈥淭he great positions to which he may rise, the fame he may acquire, will render him arrogant but will not bring him inner security. He still feels a bottom unwanted, is easily hurt, and needs incessant confirmation of his value... feelings of elation collapse easily when, in a strange environment, support is lacking; when he incurs failure; or when he is by himself. The kingdom of heaven does not come through external gestures.鈥� 鈥�...some who have such a heavy investment of neurotic pride in these prestige values... that their lives revolve around them and they often fritter away their best energies in their service.鈥� 鈥溾€橧nsults鈥� therefore hurt him in a twofold way: feeling humiliated by others and feeling ashamed of the very fact of his being hurt. Such a person is in an almost permanent dilemma: he is vulnerable to an absurd degree, but his pride does not allow him to be vulnerable at all. This inner condition greatly contributes to a diffuse irritability.鈥� Of the arrogant or ungrateful person, we should have sympathy, and allow them to save face, 鈥�... if we thought more often of the possibility that offensive behavior may stem from hurt pride, we would save ourselves many painful or even heartbreaking troubles... we should not be upset over his ingratitude but consider how badly his pride may have been hurt by accepting help. And, according to circumstances, we might either talk to him about it or try ourselves to help him in a way that saves his face... we must also regard him as someone who goes through life with a raw skin because of being pervasively vulnerable through his pride.鈥� Regarding someone who always wants to fight back 鈥榙ishonor,鈥� 鈥�...vindictiveness may in addition be a means toward self-vindication. It involves the belief that by getting back at the offender one鈥檚 own pride will be restored. This belief is based on the feeling that the offender, by his very power to hurt our pride, has put himself above us and has defeated us. By our taking revenge and hurting him more than he did us, the situation will be reversed... nothing short of triumph can restore the imaginary grandeur in which pride is invested. It is this very capacity to restore pride that gives neurotic vindictiveness its incredible tenacity and accounts for its compulsive character.鈥� If someone needs this vindictive triumph, it can become the primary driver in their life. Vindictive types are very competitive, cannot stand anyone who knows or achieves more, questions others' greatness; he must drag down his rival, or defeat him. 鈥淎mong ways to restore pride the next in importance is losing interest in all situations or people who in some way hurt this pride.鈥� Someone becomes uninterested, pursues things below their capacity, because they are impatient to excel, to dominate, and be perfect. 鈥�...the most ruinous aspect of [these withdrawals] is that we lose interest in our real self because we are not proud of it.鈥� 鈥淗e is not aware of wanting to avoid an activity because it might hurt his pride. He just avoids it... pertain[ing] to activities, to associations with people, and it may put a check on realistic strivings and efforts. If it is widespread it can actually cripple a person鈥檚 life. He does not embark on any serious pursuits commensurate with his gifts lest he fail to be a brilliant success. He would like to write or to paint and does not dare to start. He does not dare to approach girls lest they reject him. He may not even dare to travel lest he be awkward with hotel managers or porters. Or he may go only to places where he is well known since he would feel like a nonentity with strangers... In order to endure life he must now entrench himself more firmly in his private fantasy-world... neurosis... becomes a precious alibi for the lack of accomplishment.鈥� People want to disown responsibility for themselves; not own up to shortcomings, forget things they are not proud of, blame other people. 鈥淢ore often, avoidances are restricted to certain areas.鈥� Thus, he may be successful socially, and pursue it, but a failure at work, and not treat it seriously, or vice versa; one may pursue his Don Juan role, but nothing professional. The fear of rejection can be so strong as to be a contributing (not sole) factor in developing homosexuality. There are a few general 鈥渢ypes鈥� which emerge in psychoanalysis, which are the ways people deal with these inner dictates; the expansive personality, who tries to actually master the world and activate his idealized self; the self-effacing personality, who tries to minimize themself and their desires, and the resigned personality, who basically gives up and 鈥渄oesn鈥檛 care.鈥� These 鈥渟olutions,鈥� a person鈥檚 life philosophy, are very hard to change, and requires pain to even see them. These neurotic life philosophies are not always all-encompassing; people may exist somewhere on a spectrum between healthy and neurotic growth tendencies. Something passes from a healthy striving to a neurotic striving when it becomes compulsive; then the action has lost the healthy, spontaneous drive of the real self, of actually wanting to do it, and has devolved into a compulsive part of their 鈥渢yranny of shoulds.鈥� The inner necessities of say 鈥淚 must (to avoid danger)鈥� instead of 鈥淚 want to.鈥� 鈥淭he compulsiveness of the neurotic person鈥檚 need for indiscriminate supremacy makes him indifferent to truth, whether concerning himself, others, or facts.鈥� 鈥淭here are endless ways in which he disregards evidence which he does not choose to see鈥�, i.e. being provoked, being 鈥榰nable to help it,鈥� it was circumstances, etc. Of moral righteousness, which we see so prominently in modern culture, 鈥淜nowing the 鈥榬ight鈥� moral values makes him a virtuous person鈥攐ften, indeed, a kind of moral genius. And of course his imagination must work overtime to discard all the disturbing evidence to the contrary.鈥� 鈥淎 neurotic person鈥檚 very high standards make him feel that he is a moral wonder to be proud of, regardless of how he actually is and behaves... His pride is not in being moral, but in knowing how he should be.鈥� Thus, imagination is a central element to changing the neurotic鈥檚 perception of reality to fit his needs and worldview. 鈥淗e loses sight of what is actually necessary for achieving something.鈥� The Tyranny of Shoulds is made up of all the things the neurotic tells themself they should do in life, vs. what they actually are; they impede spontaneity of feelings, thoughts, wishes, beliefs, furthering alienation from real self. They derive from his kinds of pride, and their non-fulfillment results in self-accusations, against which he must protect himself. 鈥淭he shoulds, therefore, lack the moral seriousness of genuine ideals.鈥� 鈥淔or me the equivalent shoulds and taboos of whatever kind and degree are altogether a neurotic force, counterfeiting morality and conscience.鈥� This is the role of culture, to an extent. The neurotic is most susceptible to these inner dictates, the shoulds, which pull them in competing directions at times, presenting conflict, anxiety, and the potential for life paralysis; because they are alienated from their true self, what they would really like to do, this requires the neurotic solution to navigate life. The shoulds are coercive, 鈥測ou must be this perfect thing,鈥� and can lead to overreactions; in contrast, ideals are what we would like to move towards. 鈥淔eelings are the most alive part of ourselves; if they are put under a dictatorial regime, a profound uncertainty is created in our essential being which must affect adversely our relations to everything inside and outside ourselves.鈥� People鈥檚 dependence on their shoulds can lead to a lack of faith in others, 鈥�... the belief that one cannot make other people do the 鈥榬ight鈥� thing except by force, which is an externalized expression of his inner experience.鈥� 鈥淗is demands that limitations in time and energies should not exist for him are stronger than reason.鈥� Demands on self tend to show 鈥渄isregard for conditions under which they could be fulfilled.鈥� 鈥淭hey believe that their intelligence should be a supreme moving power鈥� (independent of emotional state), thus, 鈥渟ubsequent disappointment and discouragement are unavoidable.鈥� If he was earnest, he would acknowledge the 鈥渆arly influences鈥� in his life which would have produced 鈥渕olding him unfavorably鈥� in anyone; energies must be expended to outgrow this unfavorable molding. But, the neurotic is not earnest, and says that he should not have been affected; progress is the reversal of this position in therapy, and giving himself credit for not having been 鈥渆ntirely crushed by the early circumstances.鈥� 鈥淔or all practical purposes we take it for granted that in general the patient could not develop otherwise than he did; that in particular he could not help doing, feeling, thinking what he did do, feel, think. This viewpoint, however, is not shared by the patient... The fact that, everything considered, his development could go only in certain directions is beneath his consideration... he should have met [the odds] with unfailing strength.鈥� 鈥楧oing your best鈥� is not enough for the neurotic; he should have done better. The self-hate of the real self will cause him to always hone in on his faults, on what he did wrong, even if it was out of his control, a reflection on their 鈥渄isgraceful limitations.鈥� 鈥�...calling a spade a spade, is often close to impossible for the neurotic caught in the push and pull of pride and self-condemnation... he makes resolutions concerning the future which cannot possibly carry weight because he is too busy justifying himself and blaming others to mean what he plans. What has not penetrated is the sober realization that the lack of discipline is his problem, that it actually makes his life difficult, and that consequently it is up to him to do something about it.鈥� People must in therapy understand the underlying sources of their troubles; facing a particular fear (burglars) or overcoming a particular symptom or difficulty (keeping a budget) is not addressing the actual problem. 鈥淭he necessity to ward off any self-accusation stunts the capacity for constructive self-criticism and thereby mars the possibility of learning from mistakes.鈥� The neurotic may be confused about what his own freedom, independence, love, goodness, strength is, and, 鈥�...as long as he is not ready to come to grips with himself he has a stringent subjective interest in maintaining a confusion鈥攚hich, in turn, he may cover up by false pride in his all-penetrating intellect.鈥� Psychic fragmentation protects the status quo, prevents a psychic breakdown; thus he is subconsciously but intentionally uninterested in himself. Wishes or needs morph into neurotic claims; the frustration of these is felt as unfair, and may cause feelings of indignation; we are 鈥渆ntitled鈥� for the train to be on time, for example.

Although most of this book is dedicated to the the roll of pride in different kinds of neurosis, a hidden gem is toward the end where Horney sketches out a notion of what it means to be "mentally healthy." In my interpretation, here "healthy" means having a more-or-less accurate understanding of reality and being able to make decisions/take actions that are "best" for one's self based on this understanding.

Timeless. Transcendent. This text is nothing less than the neurotic bible.

If you read it carefully and take notes on the segments that parallel your own condition, you may very well find it more effective than a therapist.

A terribly overlooked theorist writes a wonderful conceptualization of people. When we get "split-off" from our actual selves, an idealized self emerges and actively seeks to destroy the actual self. Three general manifestations of the idealized self emerges within the neurotic person (which is essentially all of us): expansive, self-effacing, or resigned. Varying degrees of all emerge, but with the same goal, which is an attempt to foster an idealized image of ourselves rather than to accept our actual selves.

Our actual selves are vulnerable and experience life fully. The neurotic self emerges as an attempt to fend off hurt, but in the process also fends of growth. To grow means to be vulnerable (yes, Karen Horney talked about this long before Brene Brown simplified vulnerability and turned it into pop psychology). If we can see who self-destructive processes that are attempting to protect us, are actually stifling us, then we have further opportunity for growth.

The book doesn't mention any therapeutic techniques to work on the manifestations of the neurotic, idealized self. This is too bad because I don't think Dr. Horney realized how much the field of psychology would split in different directions. The result of this is a loss of technique and application. The lack of discussion around application of therapy toward neurosis is my biggest complain with the book.

Wow. This 1950 book is an epic work of Neo-Freudian Psychoanalysis. It is far less scientifically grounded than most of what I've read. It is based on Dr. Horney's vast psychoanalytic case files, but lacks the experimental rigor that I have come to expect from more modern psychological treatises. Instead, there are astoundingly large numbers of 'assertions.' "The neurotic does this, wants that, feels this." Many of these assertions rang true, but could have easily been explained via other means. In short, this was a masterful summing up of the life's work of a preeminent psychoanalyst of the first part of the 20th century, but it is still a masterwork in a field that is largely outdated. Still, glad I read it.

This is a brilliant book! Horney is classified with the neo-Freudians like Erich Fromm. Her analysis of personality types with respect to aggression in this book is worth the price.
