The Fruits of the Earth is a prose-poem by André Gide, published in France in 1897. Gide admitted to the intellectual influence of Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra but the true genesis was the author's own journey from the deforming influence of his puritanical religious upbringing to liberation in the arms of North African boys.
The book has three characters: the narrator, the narrator's teacher, Menalque, and the young Nathanael. Menalque has two lessons to impart through the narrator. The first is to flee families, rules, stability. Gide himself suffered so much from "snug homes" that he harped on its dangers all his life. What a beautiful book! What happiness! Knji?evnost sagledana kroz svoj istorijski tok je niz metamorfoza. Pobunjeni sin, ali i naslednik. Knji?evne metamorfoze su uvek oceubistva (paricidi) – negira se i poni?tava ono odakle se poteklo, iako nos ili mlade? na ?elu odaju ?iji je. Na isti na?in, sloboda, vitalizam i antiinstitucionalizam "Plodova" otvaraju vrata za nadolaze?u avangardu, a opet, sa pravom pretpostavljam da je samo dvadeset godina nakon objavljivanja stil ove knjige do?ivljavan arhai?nim isto onoliko koliko i parnas.
“Plodovi” su nadahnuta poema, napisana ve?im delom u prozi. Stil treba do?iveti – intiman, ne?an, tonjenje, ali tonjenje na gore, u vis. Lirska proza napisana u vidu ud?benika o ?aru. Rascvetavanje ose?anja i strasno zaprepa??enje kao religija. Svaki je ose?aj beskrajno prisutan, a od vremena se ima samo sada. U prozi u vidu naracijskih elipsi imamo smenjivanje slika pustinja i karavana, vo?enje ljubavi sa kurtizanom u gondoli koja se ljulju?ka na talasima Jadrana u Veneciji, miris kiselog mleka u doma?instvima, ?itarice u ambarima, ?etnja po vrtovima Andaluzije, ?etnje po bregovima Firence, ljubakanje sa mornarom, izvanredno pijanstvo letnjih sutona na trgovima, ali i spremnost da se svako zadovoljstvo prekine zbog nekog drugog, bilo to gledanje talasa ili ?arenog insekta. Zato ide uvek ne?to novo, jer zadovoljstvo ja u traganju, ne u ostvarenju ?elje. Sve je to propra?eno refleksivnim deklamacijama o radosti, da su svi oblici Boga dragi i sve je oblik Boga i sli?no. U svojoj radosti “Plodovi” su kontrapunkt Vajdovom “De profundisu” – dva ogledala aporije rimokatoli?ke putenosti koja se me?usobno i suprotstvljaju i dopunjuju.

Por el libro fue el primer cuento que hizo público: a pesar de su joven edad, el escritor francés con gran simplicidad debido a una experiencia ya adquirida cuenta la historia de un . Desde las primeras páginas lo hace recogiendo por escrito las necesidades de un joven despreocupado que busca su libertad.
Por ser el primer libro no fue sobrio en absoluto. El texto fue logrado con una excelente prosa poética: al principio el novelista se expresa con un monólogo, donde el André Gide decide de llamar al libro con el nombre de Natanale: desde entonses el poeta mantiene esta configuración objetiva donde el protagonista será Natanale. Poéticamente y sin inhibiciones contará sus propias sensaciones, por ejemplo: el deseo que prueba por el mismo sexo; la necesidad de viajar físicamente; los viajes realizados, por lo tanto, la necesidad de escribir para exponer las propias experiencias; etc.
El poeta largo el texto muestra inspiración para desnudarse. Lo hizo de una manera que extendió el texto al presente, pero también como cosa futura; de opinion personal, el nivel profesional del poeta respecto a otros autores profesionales es igual. Si la persona no es competente estos genios de la imaginación pueden ser todos igual.
[...] En esta ocasión André Gide escribiendo en tiempo presente como si estuvieras en tiempos futuros es como si hubiera sido un concepto antecesor de . En el sentido que Borges narra que el tiempo presente no hizo más que acentuar el propio pensamiento de "Inmortalismo": algo que siempre estaría presente, hoy como ma?ana. Por el autor argentino Borges esto sucede a los que aceptan el momento: según el concepto de Borges, el Inmortalismo sucede a quien ya no sabe de ma?ana. Todo esto probablemente en una sociedad trabajadora, que buscaba nutrientes concretos. Una sociedad que en sus tiempos aún no estaba bien definida.
En fondo en este manual (o en Natanale, o como el autor quisiera) André Gide es un joven hippie que busca su crecimiento profesional. Quién sabe cuál fue el verdadero reflejo: un signo de su juventud, o tal vez un escritor del siguiente día que en el mundo de la literatura era ya confirmado. Algunas veces el poeta francés fue una persona ingenua y llena de deseos: en sí misma, el ansia que el pudo percibir era básicamente lo que servía de estímulo. Algo que lo guiaba hacia el límite de su propio pensamiento.
Probablemente André Gide el concepto de del novelista argentino Borges lo mantuvo planificado de inmediato: a pesar de su edad joven, el hecho de ser un escritor del siguiente día era algo que André Gide supo desde siempre.

Les nourritures terrestres (The Fruits of the Earth) is a short novel, published in 1897. Actually it is more of a prose-poem, and it must have been quite provocative in his time. The original, first part is sensational because of the lyrical tone and its exuberant advice to enjoy all fruits of the earth (yes, all...), offering an approach of intense sensibility and utterly hedonism. It was a real joy to read and literaly 'savour' it.
The second part ('New Fruits') though, was written almost 40 years later (1935), and to be honest: it is a bit boring and certainly a let down after you read the first part.

An odd little book, two books actually. The first written by Gide in his 20s (1890s) and the second written later in life in the 1930s. The book is a set of aphorisms, brief descriptive passages, reflections, meditations, poetry and exhortation. There is a touch of The Prophet and Jonathon Livingston Seagull; but it is an argument for a simple hedonistic lifestyle.
The first part is certainly influenced by Nietzsche, but it argues for a simple rustic/non-urban hedonism. An argument for simple pleasures. The poetry reminded me a little of Lawrence. The narrator's simple pleasures include nature and the countryside, the sea, deserts, oases, cafes and the carnal pleasures of life. Some of Gide's pleasures left me feeling a little uncomfortable, he clearly talks about being in the arms of young boys. Gide had acknowledged his homosexuality in North Africa in the early 1890s, before he met Wilde in Paris in 1895. The age range/maturity of the young boys in question isn't clearly defined, but may well have been early teens or even younger. This particular nobel prize winner would, these days, be on the sex offenders register for similar behaviour. So how do we judge Gide's exhortations? Do we say, as some do with language, that it was of its time and we can't judge by modern standards. Today Gide may have obeyed the law. I am not sure I have the answer, but I am trying rather clumsily to express my discomfort and unease.
Fruits of the Earth has three characters; an unnamed narrator, the narrator's teacher Menalcas and Nathaniel, a young friend of the narrator. Menalcas is similar to Menalque for Gide's The Immoralist and some have argued he may represent Wilde. However the original Menalcas dates back to Virgil and was a shepherd. The pastoral nature of the book make this a more likely link. Nathaniel comes from the hebrew and means God has given.
Gide argues that it is excess, adventure and sensuality that should be sought; move away from family (Gide had escaped his own oppressive upbringing) and rules and regulations. God is pretty much equated with one's own interior life and happiness; leastways the almighty is on the sidelines cheering "Go for it lads, enjoy yourselves, it is your destiny and it's the meaning of life."
It may feel like a self-centred philosophy, but then we all are to some extent self-centred. There are some interesting reflections, good poetry and some languid descriptions of nature that stand out and some parts that grate and make me feel uncomfortable. But there is a call from the book which says; "Go on, do something out of the ordinary/exciting/outrageous/for yourself", which is rather attractive to an old stick in the mud like me.

Malgré un début surprenant et il faut le dire assez peu engageant (pour qui, tel que moi, entame Gide par cet ouvrage) il s'agit d'un des livres les plus envo?tant et immanent que l'on puisse trouver selon moi dans une bibliothèque. Gide mélange poésie, prose, mémoires et sursauts sensoriels dans un style particulier que l'on devrait plut?t qualifier d'exercice de style. Ode à la nature, à la beauté et à l'instant présent, il balaie de la main toute idée de complexité et de "ratiocination" (Sic) humaine du monde pour se concentrer sur une unique chose, l'empire de sens. Un résumé ? "Je sens donc je suis".
