Shifter Squad #1

Seven Psychics

Rate this book
Alexis Levine has just graduated from high school and intends to join the Army as soon as she turns eighteen. Her dream is to become a sniper, just like her often absent father. During routine weapons practice, she meets Mark Steel, the head of a small team of agents who work for a mysterious organization. He needs someone with outstanding skills to help his squad destroy seven psychotic psychics. With her father overseas on a mission, she is the next best choice.

Still reeling from the knowledge that psychics actually exist, Lexi agrees to become a temporary member of their team. From the first moment that she meets Reece Garrett, she is instantly drawn to him. He is strong, sexy and charismatic and unfortunately thinks of her as little more than a child.

Garrett and his team have a secret that few people are aware of. They are shape shifters who transform into ravenous beasts with every full moon. The upside of being shifters is that they possess a natural resistance to mind control, which makes them the perfect team to hunt the psychics. But Reece soon learns that some instincts are impossible for even him to deny. Caught in a mind trap that he can't escape from, he finds himself irresistibly attracted to the one person that he'd do anything to protect.

I began reading horror and paranormal books when most girls my age were still reading fairy stories. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to write stories that readers could become lost in.

The Mortis, Shifter Squad, Hellscourge and Fate's Warriors series are connected, but can be read as stand alone series. The overarching theme about Fate's chosen champions will come to an end with my fifth series; Loki's Exile.

My sixth series, Hunter Elite, begins a new saga with the seventh series, Half Fae Hunter, as a spin off.

DNF @ 30%

This started out so promising. Lexi seemed to be a bad-ass heroine, being a sniper pro that has grown up among soldiers.
Then she's whisked away by some supernatural agency and meets her new team, including grumpy Reece Garrett, and this is what happens:

I was surprised to be accepted so readily by most of the squad when I usually had so much trouble fitting in anywhere. Only one member of the team clearly didn't want me there and Agent Garrett was making no secret of his displeasure at my presence.

He didn't even know me, but it was painfully obvious that he already didn't like me. I wished I could say the same about him, but it would have been a lie. For the first time in almost eighteen years I found myself physically attracted to a man. It was a pity he didn't return my interest in the slightest.

How could anyone so hot also be so menacing?

But despite his hostile attitude towards her, Lexi can't stop lusting after the guy because you know, he's soooo hawt and muscly and dreamy.
Gah. No. How about some self-respect, girl?

My main emotion concerning this novel is DISAPPOINTMENT (it was a DNF so first impressions i guess)

I read the sample and thought the MC was a strong independent woman and didn't need a man *NO JOKE*

I loved that she was an expert sniper and her skills were sought out by the elite TAK squad and didn't spend much time talking about dating, makeup, or etc except it was just to set ground that she doesn't think about it. The author went out of her way to make her MC the badass character who doesn't automatically see guys as dating material...except she does when she meets whatshisface from the squad. The MC that was trying to be unique went full cliche and starts falling all over herself for this guy.

It was lust at first sight of course which includes abs, biceps, douchey fohawks, and not realizing the man really DOES NOT want you there but that just adds to the romance right? gives the so-not-totally-cliche "I totally don't want you here" hate into "I can't live without you" kinda love. And then she constantly makes an idiot out of herself ever since. Are you so seriously lusting after this guy that you spread your peanut butter on the counter and not the bread??? WTF.

OK I get the idea of going totally brain dead at the sight of seeing a hot guy right out of the shower but since the MC is supposed to be this "badass" she has a bunch of instances of hiding her emotions and seem like the perfect soldier like being cool over seeing a dead body for the first time, but freaks the f*ck out at the first sight of aaaaaaaabbbbbbbssssssss *falls to floor* *brain leaks out of ear*

This is an OK read, it started out really well but it dragged towards the end and I feel as though the story got a little lost in the minute.

The main character is Alex, a high school graduate who joins a squad that hunts real bad guys. There are seven psychic killers on the loose and ruining people's lives and Alex and the rest of the team have to catch them to save lives. Alex actually starts off really well but she gets sucked into a romance story that detracts from the story.

There are a lot of secondary characters and I didn't actually find any of them all that interesting.

The storyline was a bit lost in the romance that I didn't think added anything to the book. The pacing was actually the biggest let down, this book started out really well but it dragged towards the middle then just completely dropped off.

3 stars, not the best.

Better then expected

Well first off this book was free. And like my title says better than I thought it would be, I had low expectations and was spoiled for the big secret. But it was still pretty enjoyable. Lexi was a different narrator and seemed so much younger then the rest of the team. The bad guys they where chasing seemed pretty easy to stop. I mean for all the talk about it, it was pretty quick. I wish the story had different points of view, maybe that would have added to the story. But all in all a nice quick read.

Action-packed and a nice start to a sweet paranormal YA series.

It took me a little while to connect with Lexi, but now I simply can't wait to know more. The story really captured my attention.

Have to admit, the only reasons I read this one was, a, it had a ridiculous title, b, ridiculous concept, c, it was free. Now I'm onto book 4 in 3 days. SURPRISE! Well yes I was. It's not a complete, well rounded world, but there aren't really any gapping holes. The characters are good and the stories and threads keep it interesting.

... The series is now a fav and regularly reread ;)

I am on the fence with this book.
I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either.
Lexi seems to be a nice character, I don't like the male lead at all, Reece has had no interaction with Lexi from his own volition and I can't feel any chemistry between the two.
I don't exactly feel like continuing with the series since this is kind of make or brake for me. I need a strong emotional connection to develop between the main characters for it to work.
I felt more from Flynn and Kala then Reece. He was cold and distanced, not even a little bit interested. And he said a handful of words the entire book.
I'll have to sit on it for a while to see if I'll give book 2 a try.

17 year old Lexi, who is amazing with a sniper rifle, joins a Track And Kill military squad with enhanced humans. Their aim is to hunt down seven psychics with the individual powers of the 7 deadly sins.

I liked the plot of this, it was interesting to read. However, I felt like it was setting the scene for the next book. You only got a few things which were hinted at throughout confirmed in the last 10-20 pages which even more not addressed. It does leave you with more questions than answer which makes you want to read the next book.

This was one of those books that the summary ruined.

Like most readers, when I read the summary of a book, it is a teaser. Sometimes, the summary is a short preview of the first few chapters. It is never the whole darn book. This book was apparently the exception. The summary of the book is the whole book minus two sex scenes that’s arguable rape.

The reader finds out about the Shifter Squad in the last chapter. And it’s so so stupid. The whole time the plot treats the details about their heightened abilities like it’s some suspense, except... the summary and title of the book gave EVERYTHING away!

So what was left? Just me wading through a ton of filler waiting for the story to start without realizing the summary was it.

The MC was too perfect. The perfect teen that didn’t talk back, crossed all her Ts and doted all her I(s). She was the best sniper the military base had to offer at the ripe age of 17. Soldiers gathered to watch her shoot and compliment her. She read books in her spear time and was so perfect she stopped having a babysitter at the age of 13, even though her military father was gone a lot, and her mother was dead.

It was contradictory though, that the MC claimed she had no friends, being the invisible loner everyone in school ignored and yet, few chapters in, she claimed she was also used to guys chatting her up. Then again she is used to being ignored by everyone, but then is not usually ignore by guys. I point this out to outline my point about not only the inconsistencies in the character, but the absolute lack of character development. Not just for the MC but basically all the characters in the book.

The display of the characters was generic, at best. There was nothing to give life or personality to any of the fringe characters, not even Kala and that was a damn shame. No real peak into their lives, not even the life of the main character. No descriptions of their daily lives, besides work out. We are told a lot, but besides gun and an unhealthy love of cereal and coffee, I know nothing of the MC as an individual made alive by a book. No real motives, no complex thoughts or characterization, just shoot and join military. Yet, the book was so centered on the FMC that it almost eclipsed the plot (which was actually not about the FMC)! How that worked out befuddles me!

I also can’t tell you a single detail of the world build beyond Denver. No idea what city in Denver, no neighborhoods. Everything was limited to military base and no-name hotels. The antagonist were props without complications or ambitions or motives or distinct personalities (no shock considering the main character). The plot boiled down to ‘evil, shoot to kill. There were more details of the FMC’s clothes than there were of the people or places. Readers are not even given a motive for Reece’s treatment of the fMC, the summary was actually what gave the motive 🤯.

The members of the Shifter squads were extras in the MC’s show. The detail about their powers were told in so far as they were changed into shifter as kids. (That was the last chapter). Additionally, nothing from the summary is true of Reece Garrets. No charisma, and as far as personalities go, he is a dick who barely has any lines in the book, let alone the kind of connection alluded to in the summary.

I could go on but it’s 4am and I’m already mad at myself for staying up this late on a work day to finish a crappie book.

Pray for me! I’m going to need some help getting through this day!🤦🏾‍♀

What a great surprise this book was! It’s my first none ‘man on man book in a while. The summary appealed to me so, I downloaded a sample, loved it, and downloaded the full version.

I thought this was really well done. I would however, argue that it’s not a romance. Looking at the cover you get the impression it’s a story about a girl who falls for a tough young military style guy, when in fact, this is the B story. The main story is Lexi’s journey, from a girl to a woman. This surprised me, as I expected the bulk of the story to be the traditional romance and the missions to destroy ‘seven psychics to be what held the romantic story together. In reality, it’s the opposite, and it was terrific to see.

It’s a classic hero’s journey. You see Lexi change throughout the story, I’m not talking about physical changes. I mean, she grows as a character and she isn’t the same girl you meet at the beginning. That’s what all good stories should have. What’s even more incredible to me is that I loved this character. Usually, teenage girls appear annoying, weak and cringy, but Lexi is well developed and interesting from the beginning, she’s the reason you keep reading this story. I knew who she was and was invested in her fairly quickly. That’s rare for me to find, and the author has done a great job of writing this character.

It’s a comfortable read with a small cast of characters, which I prefer because you can picture them and get to know them well. The antagonists are varied enough to keep the interest going but not so engaging as to pull you from the main cast. Sex scenes are handled nicely considering the young age of the characters and I appreciated this.

I’m surprised it took Lexi so long to catch on (trying not to spoil it too much). A point to mention is that, this is solely Lexi’s journey, seen from first person perspective. The love interest, Reece Garrett, is not as developed and remains primarily a background character. I hoping he will become as interesting as Lexi in the sequels.

I will definitely be reading the series.

As I said in my Amazon review (where I bought it), I haven't read many shifter stories and was pleasantly surprised at how well put together this was. Although the story didn't always run along as smoothly as I would like, I tend to feel this is a matter of personal taste, rather than writer lack of skill. Some writers use more description than others, but if they move the story along well, it doesn't matter. J.C. Diem is one of those writers. And, too, perhaps later the author's writing style will expand with experience, who knows? Anyway, the storyline is carried well, there is enough description to color in the picture for the reader, and the author follows through on most of the storylines. Those that aren't can be explained away as still waiting for an answer in the next book. I rather liked the "cliffhanger" of this first one--it was sort of funny in a horrific way. I certainly want to get the next book to find out the result, not only of the "cliffhanger," but to see how Alexis melds with her teammates and what they are doing down the line. I may even be interested in J.C. Diem's other series, at least enough to try, so I'd have a whole bag full of books waiting to read. Thank you, J.C. Diem!

Seven Psychics begins when Lexi is approached by a strange man. This man needs her help and her unique skills of being a sniper. Lexi is planning on joining the military once she turns 18 in a few short weeks, but she never expected to have her whole world turned upside down when she went to help this strange squad of people.
The must all work together in order to save people, but it's a little more complicated than anyone realized.

This book was really good. It sucked me in and kept me guessing throughout the whole story. I really enjoyed Lexi's character, and loved how she was able to handle things through this one. It was great! I also loved all of the side characters well, and the maybe one day romance that could bloom too. Seven Psychics was a great start to this series, and I'm already addicted to it. I can not wait to read more.

I was excited by the thought of getting to read about a kick-ass female, and for about 10 to 20% of the book I thought that’s what I was getting. Unfortunately the chick started to revert to a goo goo eyed mess the minute the hot guy entered the picture. That kick-ass female at the beginning didn’t show back up until almost 95%. All in all, I think I might still give the next book a try.

This book is so bad that I just don't even know where to start. I mean seriously bad. And, the most frustrating part is I stayed awake reading because I kept expecting it to get better!

The MC is a 17 year old sniper - she is the second best sniper as her father is the best. She is recruited - AT 17 - for a secret mission for which only the (2nd) best will do. (Like, seriously, a trained agent that is 3rd best wouldn't be good enough?) (This is the same girl that has been left alone by her father as he went on missions since she was 13 years old.)

She is recruited to a team of young people (but at least they are in their 20s) to track down . . . you guessed it . . . . seven psychics. The team are all "special". They have extraordinary hearing, sight, smell . . . and they are FAST. Of course, she has no idea why. (Did she not READ the name of the series?)

She goes in, meets the team, and, our intrepid virgin, immediately crushes on the lead kid on the team. I can't even keep the names of the team straight. They are referred to intermittently as First Name and Agent Last Name and it is quite confusing to equate which names go with which person.

The seven psychics are all mind controllers with some relation to the seven deadly sins. Of course, our intrepid team is immune to their mind control. The team immediately sets out and easily captures several of the psychics. Oh, then, our intrepid heroine is forced to use HER (sniper) skills, and take down one of the villains. Oh my. She took her first life. No. Big. Deal. (Sigh.)

THEN we come up against Lust. Naturally, our intrepid team is NOT immune to Lust. She mind controls the head young guy and the situation is maneuvered such that if our intrepid heroine does not have sex with him, he will DIE. Of course, he has no memory of his actions during his mind control. Oh, and, she has a scar from a ravage animal attack when she was young.

Fast Forward - because NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS - and our team is maneuvered into another situation where HE must have sex with HER or (you guessed it!) SHE WILL DIE! Of course, this time she remembers none of this. But, wait, the book is written in first person and she is reporting it . . . . How exactly does that WORK?

Meanwhile, she is having bad dreams and waking up nekkid in forests covered in blood.

And, now the book is done. The ONLY mystery in the whole darn book is QUITE CLEAR from the NAME of the series.

This book is bad. It is to be avoided at all cost.

Hello!!

So at first glance of the cover I admit I didn't really care much about this book. So I did ignore it at first but then it kept popping around on Amazon while I was doing a search of possible Werewolf novels for me to read. So I said, "What the check let's give it a try." So then I decided to read the description of it and I was curious.

I found the story interesting but at some point it did get a little slow. The main character Lexi is not exactly the type of character I thought she was going to be. I pictured her to be a little more sarcastic and witty with a back bone to her and honestly ... she really wasn't like that. It was a little disappointing 'cause I love characters that are sarcastic (Maybe 'cause I am. Anyways) Now the reason I thought she was a witty, sarcastic character was 'cause of her upbringing and her master marksmanship. And not to mention her father being a soldier and a master marksman himself. The "bessst" as it kept ringing out through out the story. She just seem like she would have had that personality.

For example I would mention the part when she first met the squad and Mr. Moody Pants Reese advances on her. All moody and bad attitude like. I really thought that she was going to show him some back bone. And yes I know she's human and seeing a big ass guy she doesn't even know advancing on her then looming over her that way is scary. But ... still, I just thought having her father raise her like he did that she just ... stand up for herself in that situation.

Maybe it's just me.

I also didn't quite liked how she kept jumping from first name to their last name so damn much in the same page. It was rather annoying. And actually confusing at times. I would have to stop sometimes to re-read something just to see who in the heck she was talking to. 'Cause honestly I kept forgetting their last names. But still, she could have kept to one way of calling them geez.

But anyways, I was able to get the hang of it in the end.

So she wasn't the character I thought she would be. But it's not to say I didn't like her, 'cause I did. To be honest tho, to me she did come off as a little childish and immature compared to how she was raised. But hey, maybe I saw her as so 'cause I had a different picture of how her character would be. I do think she grew up just a tad bit around the ending, but still. I still see her as a child with just a little bit more maturity is all. Not much tho.

Another thing I didn't really like was how easy it was to eliminate the villains. I mean the concept of them was pretty nice and they actually sounded scary and quite interesting. But then the squad eliminated them quite easily that it just had me thinking, "Why in the bloody hell did they bring Lexi in, in the first place? The squad can kill these villains easily, they don't really need her at all!! >;[[" which was annoying to think since it did take me out the story a little bit. Plus all that the villains really did was ... hide their tracks. That'sss really it. So what I'm saying is, there could have been a little more action and Lexi could of been a little more involved. It just seemed like the squad were running around with their heads chopped off for most of the "action" then actually battling the villains. And Lexi sitting in the SUV a loooot!! Which was disappointing to say the least. And then the very few times she was allowed to join in the "battle" she really didn't do much.

I did enjoy the plot and the concept of it quite a bit. I like the idea of a supernatural squad out there tracking and killing villains. That was pretty cool. The rest of the characters were pretty fun to get to know. I wish there had been just a little bit more funny moments, but for the most part it had moments that were funny. I just like comedy in my supernatural books is all.

I also did enjoy how Lexi interacted with Flynn and Kala. Those three really felt like they became friends in the end which was nice. Reese tho ... well he had the typical attitude most werewolves have in books like these. So I wasn't surprise. (I do tend to read a lot of Werewolf novels. They are my fav after all) But I thought that his attitude towards Lexi would have gotten better towards the end and apparently ... it didn't. Well at least not as much as I thought it would have. I guess we'll see for the next books in the series.

I did also appreciate that Lexi was pretty smart and able to connect a few things herself, but there were things that were pretty damn simple to piece together easily. That were in her face as well. Heck I even knew things before she did (Which I usually hate while reading a book. That I figure things out before the character those.) that had me thinking, "how smart was she really?"

In some scenes I would be like, "Oh yay she has a brain that works!" in other scenes I would be, "Does she really have a brain that works?" then in others I'd be, "She really doesn't have a brain that works at all!!" those were the points that her character disappointed me the most 'cause I believed her to have a some sort of working brain. To be fair tho this was mostly towards the end.

Anyway let's move forward. ^.^

There were two sex scenes and in my opinion there wasn't any rape at all. (I've read a few reviews saying there was rape.) I didn't feel like it was rape and I didn't see any rape. She was 18 and he 20. And all in all it actually was ... consensual. Now I didn't particularly like that she allowed it to happen when he wasn't fully there. I mean I think there could have been some other way to bring him out of the trance. Maybe? Maybe not? I don't know. But whatever.

I did like that she was turned around the ending of the story tho. That was nice.

So all in all the story was a tad bit slow at first, - granted that I got into it well enough - and not exactly as action packed as I thought it was going to be. And the main character wasn't how I thought she would be either, but I did enjoy the concept of the plot and the story. The characters were pretty entertaining and I did enjoy reading about the squad and Lexi connecting little by little. Granted that I wish I could have known a little more about Reese, but ... I enjoy it well enough to want to read the rest of the books in the series, plus I want to meet Lexis father and see where it will go between Reese and Lexi. ^.^

First of nine, but complete on its own. 17-18 year old protagonist yet it is quite sexually explicit. While not living under any illusions about teen sex, I would list this as young adult rather than for teens.
Interesting story. A young sharpshooter becomes part of a squad of shifters. This first novel is a little more sci-fi than paranormal. The shifters are as a result of inoculation, but it would appear the series becomes more paranormal fantasy as it progresses. The seven psychics force others to enact the seven deadly sins, adding alternate ideas to the usual shifter tropes.
I would be interested in reading more but don’t intend to race into them.

This is the first book I have ever read from this author and I was completely blown away. I would give it a ten if I was able to. The main character Alexis Levine, Lexi is likable right off. I felt as though I was part of the storyline. As she goes through everything you will feel invested. Also the other characters in the story flow smoothly. This book is a YA paranormal book, I highly recommend it to everyone. I look forward to reading the next book.

What to say....

So the good news is the book was interesting enough to finish. I've quit plenty of stupid books. However, this book wasn't great. My biggest problem is the unrealistic responses of the characters. Lexi accepts everything too easily and I know she likes Reece and all but her reactions during and after the scenes where they are compelled are completely weird. Interesting story but amateurish writing.

I really enjoyed this book!
I liked that Lexi was kickass and could handle herself after temporarily joining the Shifter Squad. I enjoyed her growing friendships with Kala and Flynn. I am really looking forward to more interactions between Lexi and Reece and see how long it takes them to sort things out.
Can't wait for the next book!

For all the complaints about Lexi being boy crazy, need I remind that she’s 17?!?! That’s much more believable than her being an expert sniper!

What happens between her and Reece is truly heartbreaking.
