Calder Family Tree included at beginning of book. contemporary Montana and Texas 7 Cat Calder is grief stricken when her young fiancé is killed in a car accident. Emotionally devastated and vulnerable, Cat's final evening in town--meant to be spent with close college friends--ends instead in the arms of a handsome, gray-eyed stranger. Nine months later, Cat gives birth to a healthy baby boy and raises him in the protective bosom of her powerful family; everything changes the day a lawman--with arresting gray eyes--arrives in Blue Moon, Montana. Logan Echohawk has never forgotten that night or the beautiful stranger, and it only takes one long look at the boy to know that the brief, passionate encounter had created a child. While Cat struggles to come to grips with Logan's appearance, an enemy's long-smoldering thirst for revenge flares to life, threatening Logan, Cat, and their beloved son. Will Logan's training as a lawman be enough to save his family? And even if everyone survives, will Cat have the courage to chance her heart and love again? The newest installment in Janet Dailey's much loved Calder family saga, Calder Pride possesses both complex characters and a compelling plot line--one infused with a suspense element that Dailey conveys as effortlessly as the essence of a Montana ranching community that will charm the reader throughout. Intelligent and strong, Cat is well balanced by Logan, who is her equal, whether they're riding horses, roping cattle, battling bad guys, or making love. Fans who fell in love with earlier Calder novels will be delighted with this latest chapter in the family chronicle. --Lois Faye Dyer --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable editionof this title. Janet Anne Haradon Dailey was an American author of numerous romance novels as Janet Dailey (her married name). Her novels have been translated into nineteen languages and have sold over 300 million copies worldwide.
Born in 1944 in Storm Lake, Iowa, she attended secretarial school in Omaha, Nebraska before meeting her husband, Bill. Bill and Janet worked together in construction and land development until they "retired" to travel throughout the United States, inspiring Janet to write the Americana series of romances, where she set a novel in every state of the Union. In 1974, Janet Dailey was the first American author to write for Harlequin. Her first novel was NO QUARTER ASKED.
She had since gone on to write approximately 90 novels, 21 of which have appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List. She won many awards and accolades for her work, appearing widely on Radio and Television. Today, there are over three hundred million Janet Dailey books in print in 19 different languages, making her one of the most popular novelists in the world.
Janet Dailey passed away peacefully in her home in Branson on Saturday, December 14, 2013. She was 69.
This is my first Janet Dailey novel. The novel begins with Cat Calder learning about the death of her beloved fiancé, Repp. He’s killed, the result of a DUI. Understandably she is quite devastated and begins a prolonged period of mourning. A few months later, while in a bar with some college friends she meets (and comes on to) Logan. He reminds her of Repp. She’s a little drunk and still very much in grief. (Not the best state to make decisions.) She ends up having sex with him. It’s her first time. And it’s a one-night stand. Neither knows the other’s real name. She leaves only, remarkably, worried about getting pregnant. (No protection was used). And indeed, she does end up with child. She decides to keep and raise the kid on her own.
Now, it is my understanding that this book was written in the late 1990s. However, you’ll think it was decades earlier. The unwed and pregnant Cat is a pariah in this town. I think the folks in Mayberry would be less judgmental. She is shunned and talked about (behind her back) wherever she goes. How one unplanned pregnancy turns her into a slut, I am not sure. The book tries to explain these somewhat outdated views to us readers; when her father, Chase, states that folks there are old fashioned. He also says that the Calders are held to a higher standard. Which implies what exactly? Now, I’m a traditional person myself who believes in no sex before marriage—BUT I don’t force my views on others nor does it give me an excuse to be judgmental and unkind. Interestingly, in the book, Cat doesn’t seem to have any friends outside of her college friends, SIL and family (except maybe Sally the café owner). Seeing how folks are in this town, that’s understandable.
ANYWAY, the book skips ahead five years. Cat and Logan run into each other and she’s a total jerk about it. She is so arrogant and mean. She thinks Logan somehow found out that her family is loaded and plans to somehow get some money from her. In either this meeting or the next she actually demands that he leave town. She acts like this every time they’re together. Unbelievable. So, ok, she is concerned that he will find out her secret, but still. Even her father says something to her about her behavior (calls her spoiled and arrogant). Besides her being attractive, I don’t even understand the appeal but Logan is totally smitten with her. After a big hint from Cat’s uncle, Logan figures out Quint is his kid. And this being the 1890s, and not the 1990s, the equivalent of a shotgun marriage takes place (except Cat is the one being forced). Although Logan treats her pretty decently and is kind, it isn’t until after they have sex again that she finally comes around. And then it seems suddenly she’s in love with him. Logan’s character is alright. He adapts well to having a kid and the new marriage. And he’s a very good deputy sheriff.
While all this is going on, nefarious activities are going in the second plot. This is no spoiler. It’s no whodunit here, we know the who and why from the start. That kind of takes the suspense out of it. It doesn’t make much sense though to me. It’s a payback of sorts because Chase Calder refused to help the Andersons. I have a hard time believing that his testimony would have made that much of an impact. Really? An un-contrite repeat offender? However, to the Anderson family, all their woes are laid at the feet of the Calders. But then all of them are psychopaths so. (Is it just me or doesn’t it seem that the Anderson boys both got awfully light prison sentences?) Lastly the ending was very abrupt. It left so much hanging.
Cat Calder is in love with Repp but he has been killed in a car accident by a drunk driver. She stumbles around for a few months and is not to going back to college. She drives down to Ft. Worth to get her things from the dorm. Her girlfriends decide they need a night on the town to say goodbye to Cat. At one bar she meets a man that reminds her of Repp. Repp would never have sex with her and she resented him for it. She throws herself at this man, Logan, who works for the ATF. She does not want to remain a virgin. They spend the night together and the next morning she leaves. She told him her name was Maggie the Cat but she never asked his name. A few months later she realizes that she is pregnant. Everyone thinks she is a bad girl but she loves her son. Five years later, Logan comes to town and gets a job as a deputy sheriff. They see each other. With help from Cat's uncle, Logan finds out that Quint is his son. One of the men that Logan put in jail for gun running also lives down the road from Logan. This man and his family have hard feelings for Logan and the Calders. They decide to get revenge. Will Cat and Logan live happily ever after?
I am soooo glad I read this book and after the last book I read before this one I was really worried I would hate it. We pick up from were we left off after the Heroines Cats mother dies and so does her fiancé. Cat does something reckless and has a one night stand with a hot dark stranger who just fall for Cat and is too worried about being the sub for her dead fiancée to come to her after. She of course gets pregnant being a virgin this is always the way. I loved that he was so sweet with his son and not forceful with her even though she kept his son from him. He wanted her love and a family. It was awesome how when they get together again he just wanted to hear his name on her lips and it was like coming home for him. I could feel the longing in those words it was powerful. This book was amazing. Loved loving and love it.
Very reminiscent of Chase and Maggie’s story, except that it is their daughter Cat whose one night stand with a stranger leaves her with a child on the way and no one knows who the father is.
Enter Logan Echohawk, Dakota Sioux and acting sheriff of Blue Moon.
Definitely a good read and a wonderful continuation of the Calder Saga.
Seems to be part of a series about the Calder family of the Dakotas. I haven't read the rest of the series, but that did not matter. Its not as though the stories have hooks from other parts.
This one is about the girl of the family - Cat Calder. How she is desperate to marry her fiance, but loses him in an accident before the marriage. Most importantly, she is a frustrated virgin because her fiance was the 'decent' kind ! While mourning, she meets the hero in a bar, and picks him up there !
Bold girl that she is , and quite desperate too, she makes a play for the poor guy, he happily succumbs, they have their night of passion. But wait, its all in the reader's imagination. The scene simply cuts to the morning after !!!
Job done, mystery about sex resolved, she simply walks away from the poor guy. And yes, she is pregnant too. So the poor guy is reduced to a sex tutor + anonymous sperm donor in her life, they don't even exchange names you see.
There is a lot of stuff in the story about how she faces the family with her situation, how she braves pregnancy alone, etc. But these are parts that the hero is totally left out of. So I am going to cut to 5 years later. The guy gets posted as a sheriff in her outback town. He is a cop !!!
This time they meet accidentally, she scoffs at him. Doesn't bother to inform the poor guy about the kid. He is being extremely sweet and loving, but she doesn't care a damn for him. Simply because she is an outback heiress and the guy is a lowly cop. Her haughty behavior grates on her father's nerves. And he forces her to team up with the hero, and make an attempt at marriage, at least for the child's sake.
After marriage, some mild friction follows, but they do fall promptly into bed once again. The boy take a shine to the dad, and life is set.
Throughout the years, there is a lurking antagonist in the background, the local bad guy. Ex convict looking to setup an illegal arms business. The cop husband has some action scenes with the villain. The villain also makes a play for the heroine. All her bravado in front of the hero falls to dust in this scene. She is shaking in her boots when the villain assaults her. The husband comes back and teaches her self defense moves. How sensible !!!
Though its the girl's story from adolescence to a mature wife and mother, it is the hero I was rooting for. He is a grounded, caring, honorable man, and a sexy cop to top it all !!!!
Winding, really long story. Pulled up whenever the hero is in the picture. Good one time read. 3 stars.
The heroine is a spoiled hot-head that gets angry when ever she doesn't get what she wants. She had a crush on the Taylor boy and wanted to marry him right out of high school. She is put off, pushed to go to college. She still tried to force the issue that she get married at the same time as her brother but is put off again that she should wait till she finishes college. She is furious of course especially when she comes home before her last year only to find he was killed by a drunk driver. He's understandably upset but it seems that she's more upset that she didn't get to be married to him and that since he was an honourable guy he refused to sleep with her all this time wanting to wait till marriage. She's a 20-something virgin and she decides not to ever love anyone again. A few months later she's out with her collage roommates and comes on to a guy in a bar. She get's quite pushy and he tries to put her off because she's drunk and he doesn't want to take advantage. She gets pissy again! He ends up helping her to a hotel so she doesn't drive and then comes on even stronger. He finally gives in and lets his attraction and the semi-insta-love take over. He tells her he has no protection and she doesn't care. In the morning she sneaks out and goes away, and of course winds up pregnant.
First things, it's hard to believe in the 90s everyone in town is talking behind her back that she's a tramp because despite that she's never stepped out of line before she now is pregnant out of wedlock.
The next is when she goes out to work on the range 9 days before her due date and goes into labour. some how her water breaks after only some lower back pain, then she has contractions that are so close together that she doesn't have time to go anywhere to give birth. She needs to bite on a knotted handkerchief to keep from screaming from the pains so she can seem tough to all the cowboys who are confounded since all their wives screamed a lot when they had babies. This is so ridiculous it's now how births happen and it's not that hard to keep from screaming either.
I think the fact that she enjoyed herself with Logan and keeps thinking of him since then makes her feel guilty. When they meet later she is an arrogant bitch trying to use the power and money behind her name to drive him off before he finds out about his son. Every time they encounter each other she's awful to him, insulting and threatening. Why would you want to be with someone so nasty.
Cat is a Calder through and through: proud, headstrong, intelligent, and extremely beautiful. When her fiancé is accidentally killed, she retreats to the family homestead to mourn, vowing never to give her heart to another man. But one reckless night with a handsome, gray-eyed stranger changes her life forever--and gives her a son with striking gray eyes.
Cat decides to raise the child on her own, as a Calder, and live with her family on the Triple C Ranch. Even though the town has watched Cat grow from a girl to a young woman, they treat her as an outcast when they learn she is an unwed mother. Despite her family's wealth and power--or because of it--Cat is gossiped about meanly, and it takes all her pride to hold her head up and ignore what she knows is being said behind her back.
But Cat cannot ignore the new sheriff, Logan Echohawk. It isn't his rugged good looks that cause her heart to skip a beat when he first arrives in town--it's his striking gray eyes. It seems impossible, but the man she thought she would never see again is now a part of her life--whether she wants him to be or not. And will he notice her son's eyes and figure out what she vowed never to tell him?
Cat finds herself torn between her promise to her first love and powerful, unexpected feelings for her child's father. With her family standing firmly behind her, and her son's future in her hands, Cat must decide: Will she take a chance on a new, true love?
It is part of the "Calder" series. It is about the new sheriff in town finding out he is a father. It is an intrigue romance. I like the books that are part of a series. They continue the stories!!!!!
It was a reasonably good read but for the fact there seemed to be a lot of stuff not really required. The storyline went onto too much depth about the past events rather than the two main characters. would have preferred to score 3 1/2 stars.
The characters are so real they come alive in your mind as you're reading. The plot is riveting. A real page turner. You won't sleep till you finish the book!
Another installment in the life of the Calders. This was a pleasant read. I enjoyed the story line very much. We have here the story of Cat Calder, daughter of Chase Calder. Upon arrival back home from college, Cat is hit with the devastating news that her fiance has been killed in an accident. Cat mourns for Repp and decides she is not going back to college. She goes to pick up her things from college and say goodbye to her sorority sisters. They go out on the town where Cat encounters a handsome gray-eyed stranger at one of the bars. She is drawn to him and he makes her feel alive again. But that one reckless night with the handsome, gray-eyed stranger changes her life forever -- and gives her a son with striking gray eyes.
Cat decides to raise the child on her own, but the town treats her as an outcast when they learn she is an unwed mother. Cat is gossiped about meanly, and it takes all her pride to hold her head up and ignore what she knows is being said behind her back.
Just before her son Quint's fifth birthday a handsome new Sheriff, Logan Echoheart comes to town. But Cat cannot ignore the new sheriff. It isn't his rugged good looks that cause her heart to skip a beat when he first arrives in town -- it's his striking gray eyes. It seems impossible, but the man she never thought she would see again is now a part of her life.
Cat finds herself torn between her promise to her first love Repp and the powerful, unexpected feelings for her child's father. Cat must decide: Will she take a chance on a new love?
this is the second time i will be reading this. i would have given it 4 stars on my first read, but now, i see lots of loopholes in the plot. This is shallow read, glamourizing the ranch/country lifestyle. While the initial story line was pleasant, (good girl in mourning decides to get reckless as part of her healing, accidently becomes pregnant and then meets up with the father of her baby several years later), the plot/climax was silly and not very believable (ex-con takes revenge on the #1 family in the area). I was surprised that there was no mystery in who the villan was.
What caused me to raise my eyebrows, is that the heroine is painted as a strong, independent woman in the beginning of the book, but changes into a weaker, and dependent woman once she is in a relationship. The old fashioned shotgun marraige, "man & wife" statements, giving up both her and her child's last name as well as moving from her home without much discussion, were concerning for a book written in 1999.
The heroine also changes overnight from someone who dislikes her current situation, to someone who declares themselves to be totally in love. There is no journey, no questioning or exploring what their new found realtionship means to their previously declared temporary marraige, just an assumption that it has moved to a permanent status with plans for future children.
The final climax scene ends the story, leaving a few details in limbo.
