Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy

Rate this book
Develop your own counseling style using Corey's bestselling THEORY AND PRACTICE OF COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY. You will see the major theories of counseling (psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive-behavior, family systems, feminist and, and postmodern approaches) as they are used in practice through a case study focused on one client, "Stan." The case of "Stan" appears in each chapter so you can see how the theory presented in that chapter informs therapeutic decision-making. "At a Glance" charts pinpoint the major differences between theories in areas such as multicultural focus, basic philosophies, and limitations.

I think that Corey is a very inappropriate author for textbooks. Rather than presenting theoretical concepts in an objective manner and allowing students to draw their own conclusions, Corey injects his own biases, in many cases using the words I value, I question, from my perspective, etc. His ,opinions, questions and values have no place in a textbook.

It was a decent textbook, but way, way too much emphasis on the author's personal philosophy of counseling. This might not have bothered me much, except that he seems to really heavily favor psychoanalysis and dream analysis, which don't have a lot of empirical evidence supporting them. Too much woo-woo in this book for my tastes, so to speak.

My 77 year old professior forces us to read Gladdings text. When I voiced my concern for the theories section of my exit exam another professor let me borrow this book. Corey writes clearly in a language that is easily understandable. He organizes the theories all in the same format, and written in the same way it's easy to compare and contrast. It's visually appealing to look at and doesn't burn the eyes when reading. I just really hate Gladding. I wish I knew about Corey during my whole grad school experience it would have made things a lot easier on me. I could care less if he puts his own personal opinion in the books. Take it with a grain of salt, our professors do the same thing during lectures.

I think as a uni student and as an avid reader this is a book everyone should read.
I was rather inspiring too. So optimistic, and transports the willing to live to the reader.
Read it and u should see.

I picked up this textbook at a library sale just to learn a bit more about where counseling and psychotherapy evolved after Freud. It was actually a fascinating read and even though I wasn't in a class or considering a career in it, I read the whole thing. I liked the summaries of each aspect of therapy laid out in the same way, and the examples of the case study approached differently from each method. I also liked the end where the author suggests a multifaceted approach, pulling appropriate parts of different methods to most benefit the patient. The author does freely share his opinions, which is a little unusual for a text book, but I felt like I had a private audience with an experienced professor and he was trying to pass his wisdom on to me.

God awful takes, outdated language, confusing organization of the chapters, and horribly boring. Even considering this is intended to be a purely theoretical book, it’s butchered by the author’s opinions. Had to read it for a class.

Good intro to theories of counselling. Could have been shorter and without the bias of the author. However if you look at it as foundational reading then you won't be too disappointed because you can still learn a lot about the theories.

A comprehensive exploration of various psychotherapy theories and techniques. Definitely more relevant to professionals on the clinical side, but super interesting nonetheless, and the author touches on applications to school counseling for each theory.

Easy and engaging to read. I can ignore the fact that the author insert himself on some parts but I think that's the essence of therapy (or at least the majority of it), you cannot completely distance yourself from the therapy itself.
It ignited my love for psychotherapy and psychology in general. That's. Why. I'm. Studying. This. Field. 🧡🧡

I don't generally like textbooks, but I was actually a little sad to finish this one today. What a wonderful look into the theories of counseling! I genuinely enjoyed getting acquainted with these theories and the people behind them.

Corey also writes with a level of kindness and optimism that I haven't seen in a textbook yet. So often, he encourages the reader to be mindful of the diverse challenges clients face and remain empathetic to their pain, even if you don't always agree with them. The focus on counseling clients from different cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds was greatly appreciated, too. I loved how Corey managed to not exclude anyone while encouraging therapists to be mindful of the different ways different people move about the world.

Some have argued that the injection of his personal beliefs was inappropriate, but I disagree. In the concluding chapter, he writes that he hopes the reader will take these theories and tailor them into their own personal practice. Throughout the text, he models this by sharing his opinions, which are clearly preceded with words such as "I believe" or "I value." The reader is free to form their own opinions, and he makes this clear.

Great insight into secular counseling

I have rated this book 4 stars not because the content was great, but because the insight gained into the secular humanistic mindset of counseling is very useful for a shepherd of God’s household. This book has been useful in giving insights as to how the natural man chooses to completely distort the causes of much mental distress many people encounter in this fallen world. Therefore, I will be all the more alert to the schemes that are known to me as the doctrines of demons, that is that which is antithetical to God’s word and the doctrines taught within it.

I actually genuinely enjoyed reading this text. Applying each theory to two case studies helped me to understand practical application of some otherwise vague concepts. Although I can see why it could be divisive, I liked that Corey often offered his views and opinions to give an experienced perspective.

This has to have been one of my favorite text books to read. It was informative, conversational, and really made it easy to learn the various approaches to therapy. This is a GREAT starting point in developing my own personal brand of therapy. I'm really glad to have read this for class.

I loved this book. It clearly explains the major theories of counseling and illustrates each with an ongoing case study. There are also dvd's available to watch some of the techniques of the theories acted out. A good foundation to counseling professions.

Gradually came to see Corey as an unreliable narrator, full of contradictions. In a section about Alderian therapy, he gives an example of a "mistaken belief": a man believes that no one will ever care about him. Two pages later, in a totally different context, he points out that many clients have never been in a caring relationship until entering therapy. Which is it? Is it a mistake to expect people not to care, or is it generally true that people do not and have not cared?

That's just one little example. I was also really thrown by the emphasis on free will in the existential section. I've read existentialists, including Yallom, but never have I encountered this obsession with free will and personal choice. Anyone with a scientific mind will tell you that the universe IS deterministic--we just pretend it's not in order to live out our fantasies.

It seems irresponsible to me to train people in Freudian psychoanalysis in the year 2025 (or 2013, as was the year of publication of my edition). Freud was Just Some Guy who made up a lot of deeply suspect bullshit based on his own feelings and thoughts. The idea that being analyzed, scrutinized, and then "constructively"criticized on the basis of that scrutiny, is functional as a form of healing...? No. How do people still subscribe to this?

It was interesting to read the chapter on Reality Therapy, since I didn't know anything about it. However I found it frustrating that Corey criticized the approach through a more Freudian position, obsessed with dreams and transference.

The writing about feminist theory had an awkwardness to it. I would guess that the author is male.

I read from the beginning of the book through Chapter 7, then Chapters 11 and 12. Notating in case I want to go back and read the rest.

Do I feel like I could actually use the approaches I read about to actually therapize someone? Mmm...I think experience would be a better preparation than reading this book.

offers a tremendous survey of the diverse practices and concepts utilized in contemporary counseling. Through this process of discovery, an individual is able to understand the overview of the various theories and techniques that can funnel them towards a personal style of counseling.

The text is able to plainly expound upon the divergent approaches to psychotherapy and counseling in a straightforward method. This approach further enables a novice to easily use the material presented in practical applications.

Each therapeutic approach is presented with:

An introduction.

Review of the key concepts; and of particular interest, the Theory’s view of human nature.

The procedures, techniques, and applications embraced by the Theory.

The Theory’s strengths and weaknesses from a multi-cultural perspective.

An application of the therapy advocated by the Theory to a case study.

A summary and evaluation of using the particular Theory.

Suggested Readings and References to research on the Theory.

I found the content and structure of the book to be extremely beneficial in helping formulate a style of counseling consistent with my strengths and that focuses on the type of services provided by a specific counseling provider.

I am indebted to the suggested readings and references that allow the reader to research the Theory’s and also, obtain information through the various Society’s and Institutes that provide information and training.

I will keep this book as a strong reference in the practice of counseling.

Book #38 for 2022

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

100% will include books I finished for school.. some of our texts we don’t end up reading the entire book, but this one I did complete.

This is a book that takes an in-depth look at several, (11 if I remember correctly) counseling theories.

I’m on my last week of this class, sort of and have loved learning this material.

The chapters were really long so that’s why I only gave 4 stars. I obviously only recommend this one if you’re studying to be or are already a counselor.

I liked learning about the different founders of the theories, especially the weirdos like Freud. 😂

A good overview to 11 approaches to psychotherapy, with one chapter devoted to each. I appreciated the chapter on feminist therapy, which was valuable and sensitively written. The last chapter is a great summary.

This book loses stars due to the case of Gwen being far better written than the case of Stan - the former is illustrative and engaging, while the case of Stan sections are often dull and impractical. The author is also clearly biased towards some approaches which does not have a place in a textbook. The length of each chapter is also inconsistent - some contain a lot more material than others. There is a decent amount of repetition within and between chapters.

This text has many valuable lessons throughout the entire book. So, the way he wrote this book is to be collaborative with the character Stan and the accompanying DVD. The two should be used together in conjunction to get a better view of how Gerry applies the theories in different areas for Stans's goals. As a student of opportunity, this may not be the only book I use to help educators in the practice of counseling but one that has been the guild throughout my course studies. If it is not a part of your study I would recommend this a good read.
