Dragon shifter Thane Ealdian has waited six hundred years to avenge the loss of his family, and finally a clue has surfaced that implicates an old adversary. Thane will stop at nothing to seek his revenge, but to prevent violence between the clans, the Bloodkin Triad has forced a mediator on him. Some upstart named Emerson Clark...
Emerson is fed up with all Bloodkin and how they've managed to control every aspect of her life. While she doesn’t believe that Bloodkin can shift into dragons—because, really?—she has to admit, they are exceptionally nice to look at. But once the mediation is over, she wants nothing to do with them ever again.
When Thane discovers that the clever and beautiful Emerson is the key to uncovering the truth, he has no intention of letting her go. Although she wants to run, she can’t turn her back on Thane or her intense feelings for him. His quest pulls at her heart, just as his nearness sparks something dangerous inside her. With evil in hot pursuit, sooner or later everything will ignite—the mediation, the shifter within her... and their passions.

Sorry for the review dump. I'm not bumping, I just went on a book binge yesterday and I am truly just sitting down to write all the reviews now.
So by now you should all know that I LURVE dragons.
A lot.
So needless to say, I was somewhat predisposed to like this story.
But thankfully, it was legitimately good too.
This book had a different spin on dragon shifters than any I've encountered before.
In this world, dragons are called "Bloodkin" and they don't really shift at will like they do in most shifter books.
Instead, they kind of "fight" the shift as their dragon side can overtake their human side...and they don't have a whole lotta control over themselves when they are in dragon form...AKA they can hypothetically eat an entire village for lunch.
Apparently, when they are born, their human side is stronger than their dragon side and it suppresses the dragon.
The dragon side eventually gains more power, however, and at at some point they experience their first shift sometime in their 20's it seems. From then on it's kinda hazy how often they shift.
But the dragon shifter H here, Thane, is super fucking old - like over a thousand years old - and it mentions that (at the time of this story) he hasn't shifted in a century as he doesn't think he can fight the "Night Song" any longer.
Apparently, the older they get, their dragon side starts to...overtake their human side, eventually resulting in them retreating to some wazoo dragon island for their "final shift" when they get too tired and/or too old to fight it anymore.
Or something like that...
Anyway - as evidenced by the verbal diarrhea of an explanation up above - the start of this book was kind of convoluted for me; but luckily, it picked up as it got going.
I always expect a little drag during the first book in a new series, what with the need to build an entire world and culture and what not.
Regardless, even though I don't necessarily prefer the..."shift pattern" (*snort* I totally pulled that out of my ass) in this book, I still really enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing how things progress in the next book.
Tempted by Fire is book one in the Dragons of Bloodfire series by Erin Kellison. I won this book in a give a way. This is my first book by Erin Kellison. I’ve been admiring it for some time now, I admit. I also admit that I do have a small ‘thing for dragon shifters so I couldn’t believe my good fortune when I won the book. So did it live up to my expectations? Read on and find out.
Thane Ryce Ealdian is a Bloodkin, a name given to those with dragon blood. Over six hundred years ago Thane’s wife and child were murdered. The one responsible was never found. Now, after all this time, their remains have been found. And an object clutched in the hand of his wife’s skeleton implicates someone in the murder. But the person implicated is also claiming that the remains belong to his clan. So a mediator has been appointed to settle the dispute. Then, Thane will get his revenge.
Emerson Clark was abandoned as a baby, never knowing her lineage. She grew up in the human system. It was suggested somewhere along the line that she was Bloodkin but she never had any real proof. And honestly, she doesn’t even know if she believes that dragon shifters actually exist. She knows that other shifters are real. Her own foster brother is a were shifter. But dragons? Really? When she applied for college financial aid, though, she checked the box next to Bloodkin with a question mark. All of a sudden, she had plenty of money for college and living expenses. After college, she was given the job of a mediator with a salary she couldn’t resist. But she didn’t like the feeling that the Bloodkin were controlling every aspect of her life. So after this job, she was out. Or so she thought, anyway.
As soon as Emerson meets Thane, she feels something. An attraction to him on a level she never knew existed. It’s like something inside her was awakening. But she soon discovered that there was a lot more to this case than she thought. And now she is being warned off the case, in a very disturbing way. Thane soon realizes that she has been assigned to the case for a reason. And he is going to figure out what it is. Until he does, Emerson isn’t going anywhere. He is keeping her close, very close.
As the danger Emerson and Thane are in increases, so does their attraction. Still, though, Thane wants revenge. As secrets are revealed, Thane might not like all the answers he discovers.
This was a really good book with a whole new take on the dragon world. I enjoyed it so much and sped through it. Thane was perfect in his own dark, brooding way. I loved his man servant or whatever he was called, Matthew. And Emerson was so strong. With all she endured as a child, then to be thrust into this crazy world, she remained tough and loyal. Thane and Emerson were perfect together. So, as I said, this was my first book by this author. I will most definitely continue on with this series and very much look forward to checking out some of her other books as well.
“He was a match; she was flint. And between them both…fire.
Tempted by Fire is a quick and fun dragon shifter story. Enjoyed the characters and world building, although I wish it was longer. Looking forward to the next one!
I know, I know. This is where the review should show but you guys I'm in a funk and I can't write any.
I loved the book! So surprised cause it was supposed to be like this filler transitional book to cleanse my palette type thing only it was just freaking brilliant. I don't know why more people don't know about this, it's awesome and I loved the writing. Curses for it being so short cause it just isn't fair and screw life cause it never promised otherwise.
This was my first read by Ms. Kellison and my first audiobook narrated by Bernard Setaro Clark. I didn't know what to expect and found myself pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this one.
It was smart, sometimes humorous, sometimes intense, with a good amount of action. It had interesting, likeable characters, provided a window into an intriguing world/mythology, and held a good blend of romance and mystery.
And, hello, dragons.
(Love me some dragons...)
So, I think it's pretty obvious that I'll be reading more from this author because she impressed me right out of the gates. And the narrator did a great job, so I'll be checking out more audiobooks from him too.
Heads up that this is a shorter read (the audiobook was four hours and fifty-six minutes long) but I felt it did what it set out to do and wasn't missing anything.
Sure, I would have been all good with an even longer tale because I was enjoying myself, but the story felt complete and I was happy with it.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Tempted By Fire is book one in the Dragons of Bloodfire series by Erin Kellison. OMG, I love dragons and this novel had me hooked from begging to end.
I loved everything about this story. The writing is amazing, the world building is fantastic and the world is interesting. We get lots of surprises and unique characters. I had a good time with the mystery that brings Emerson and Thane together.
Emerson’s life has not been easy. She does not believe in dragons nor does she believe she is one herself, but she will be sucked into a wold that terrifies her and is deadly. As the death count rises secrets that have been long kept will finally be revealed. She is everything I enjoy in a heroine with her strong, fierce, and fiery personality. Thane is a Dragon and knows his time is limited, but he has one last thing he must accomplish before he gives into the dragon song. You feel his struggle, his loneliness, and determination to find justice. He is a true alpha.
Lots of action, a mystery, and romance. The attraction between Emerson and Thane builds up along the way as they both try to discover the truth. I liked how the author used Emerson’s naiveté. It brought depth to the story and her character. I also had a good time getting to know the secondary characters. Note: Their is a lot of violence in this dragon world more then I expected, but it did not detour me.
Tempted By Fire was an outstanding start to this new series. Dragon lover’s will enjoy! We get fantastic world building, lots of surprises, a mystery, and amazing characters. I can’t wait for the next book.
what a great series starter. I loved how the storyline felt original and one of a kind. the characters and plot were both solid. I.also enjoyed the writing style. I'll have to check out more of this writer's work. unfortunately book 2 does not seem to be available. I hope it's not too far from release or it is likely I will not continue this series. I prefer reading series after all books are published but this was still an enjoyable read. No brutal cliffhanger which was appreciated.
This was a light, fun read - dragon PNR, basically. It was pretty straightforward, and honestly feels more like it was setting up this series than a deep dive into these characters. Not that I didn't enjoy the couple, but it was a pretty surface-level interaction with them.
Still, this was exactly what I wanted right now, and I enjoyed it.
I randomly found this on Amazon and I absolutely loved it!
I will admit to being a sucker for any kind of shifter love story so that swayed me a bit but the writing is great. My only sadness is that the second book isn't about these two again. I've already read that one too, and it's good, but I didn't love them as much as I loved this story.
In any event if you're looking for a good dragon love story... and really, who ISN'T?! Check this out.
Story located in Dark and Damaged: Eight Tortured Heroes of Paranormal Romance Rate: 5 stars Review: I wish it was longer & hope this series meets my very high expectations. I'm going to look into some of her other books.
This counts towards my Girls, Guns and Grimoires Book Bingo challenge category: ANTHOLOGY OR THREE SHORT STORIES.
This is one of the better, more interesting takes on dragons in paranormal romance. They have a nice little mafia/shifter royalty thing going on and Emerson, the heroine, is rightfully freaked out by it. I want to read more about this world.
The romance was sort of a let down for me because it was not as interesting. H and h were compatible and inoffensive, and they got together as predicted. But that may be a plus for people who like action and world building without romantic angst or tension 😂
I am going to try really hard to be fair and impartial. I will not let dragons inflate the rating.
But seriously guys, DRAGONS! One of the few complaints I have about this book is that there was very little dragon action. It makes sense though. Even in a world where shifters are a common occurrence, shifting into a mythical creature is not so easily accepted. It isn't hard to believe that people would panic if they saw a fire breathing dragon flying over their home. These dragon shifters wisely stay under the radar.
Despite remaining scale-less, I love these dragons. Or at least I loved Thane. He was a cranky, possessive, hoarding recluse. And apparently he looks hot in jeans. I love a good pair of jeans. But Thane wasn't my favorite part of the book. My favorite part was the Night Song. I'm not going to go into spoilers, but I thought the concept was beautiful. It sets these dragons apart from other dragon series and pulls me in. I want to know more about this whole world.
The other point that I really enjoyed was that the main storyline, wasn't the relationship. The romance and sex could have been removed, and I still would have enjoyed the story. Though probably not as much. It seems wrong to create sexy dragons and not give them sexy times.
I promised a fair and impartial review. So I will give you another negative to balance out the super sexy dragons. This book could really use another 50 pages. The story was rushed. Especially the relationship. They jumped into sex and mating super fast. I don't think it was fast to them, but it was fast to the reader because we got so few details of the long conversations they had while they investigated his mediation case.
Kindly provided with an ARC for an honest review......
Loved it !!! This was my first book by Erin and boy did she do this story proud.
I am ALWAYS UP for a good shifter story, couple that with the fact that the shifter in question was a dragon and we were already onto a winning start for me.
This is a well written, appropriately paced and action packed. It certainly had just the right amount of heat and chemistry between our two leads.
I enjoyed the dialogue throughout the book and Thane and Ember were perfect for each other as characters go. Ember was quite an amusing leading lady. Being a mediator for two dragon families when she has no belief into the whole shape shifter matter.....she was quite the diplomat ;0)
As for Thane....well one word HOT !! And that was in every way.
This is a definite recommend for any lover of paranormal romance with a solid story line.
Erin Kellison has started a new series and as usual brings her own unique and dark twist giving an unexpected read. I've long enjoyed reading her Reveler series with it's deep undertones so was very interested to find out what she would bring that's fresh to the dragon type books that seem so popular right now. Emerson has had a rough life but has found her place in the crazy world she lives in. Her best friend is a wolf shifter but Emerson has always been told she's part dragon and now is considered to be blood kin with all the dubious perks that go with that position. Emerson is skeptical about the existence of dragons but plays along with the fantasists but if truth be told she's so tired of it all and wants nothing more than to slip quietly away. After this one last job that's just what she intends to do. The job? Act as a mediator between the Heolstor family and one very ticked off Thane Ealdian! They all claim the ancient bones discovered belong to them but only one is telling the truth. Emerson is getting sucked into a world that's terrifying and deadly and as the death count rises secrets long kept quiet are finally revealed putting Emerson firmly in the cross hairs! There's an attraction between the two main characters tha just keeps building . Not exactly instant love admittedly but nevertheless palpable. Thane knows his time on earth is limited and his intense loneliness and descent is offset by his desire for justice. Emerson's naïveté allowed the author to bring depth to the story as her own preset ideas are truly tested. Loved the supporting characters but if honest was shocked by the violence. Would I read more? Of course but I'm a little unsure just where the author might go with this series next. Shorter than I like to read but who doesn't love dragons? I now realise that this story was originally published in the Dark and Damaged box set so that explains the brevity of it. I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review
Bernard Setaro Clark does the audio read and he was fabulous!
(gotta say, I wish I remembered my high school French cause some of the authors books are kindle unlimited ...but in French. Oh well, that's what I get for dropping French in grade 11!)
A short sweet read/listen with no words wasted in this 600 year old murder mystery, with dragon shifters. Emerson is only 24 and only recently learned of her dragon/bloodkin heritage... BUT she doesn't really believe it. I mean, dragon shifters??? Come on!! seriously?! But yeah 'seriously', as a heart attack.
She's an orphan with a group of foster siblings instead of blood family. And she's cool with that and owns her life. I really liked her 'take no sh*t' attitude. Not that she's a b*tch, or that she's one of those 'cut off your nose to spite your face' kinda gals. No, she's as honest to herself as she is to others. But she wants to quit her job. This one last mediation and she's handing in that resignation letter...
Two dragon families claim the 600 year old remains of a female dragon shifter and her infant son. One is the Heolsters, and the other is the Ealdians... er rather THE EALDIAN; Thane. Thane is MUCH older than 600 years, and it shows. But the Heolsters are no spring chickens either! I loved the side characters and the intrigue and just enjoyed the heck out of this story. Safety
I don't usually bother putting paranormal books on my "love may dec" shelf but you really could feel the age gap between the MCs. Not in a bad way of course. But it does add to the intrigue.
I love visiting new and different worlds in books. I love amazing ones even more. Tempted by Fire deserves five stars for the fascinating world all on its own. There are several different species of paranormal beings to be found in the pages of this book. Dragons referred to as Bloodkin are the main ones. The world is complex and full of secrets and politics that they guard as if it were their own personal hoard.
Emerson is learning the politics of her own people as she mediates an argument of who shall get the remains of a woman and child. Two different families are arguing that the remains are in fact that of their own loved ones. Emerson just wants to complete this last task for her employer so that she may move on to other employment options, preferably employment options far away from the Bloodkin.
Having to deal with both the Heolstor family and a mediator is more than Thane feels he has time for at this point in his long life. He just wants to finally put his missing loved ones to rest. He can then move on to answering the seductive call of the Night Song. Everything he thought was in his near future is pushed aside as more and more secrets are uncovered with this long ago deeply buried secret.
The only concern I had while reading the first book in Erin’s new Dragons of Bloodfire series is that it was not a romance. Rest assured lovers of paranormal romance that this is a romance. The romance comes later in the book. The world building takes precedence here. I’m looking forward to where Kellison will go with this series. I’m also wildly curious about future books due to I have no clue who or what will be the focal point of the next (or future) books.
This is the first book I have read by this author, and I loved it. I can't wait to start reading the next book in this series. I enjoy all kinds of shifter characters, but dragons are quickly becoming my favorite.
I can't remember when I fell in love with Erin Kellison's books. I just know that I have. But even I was surprised to fall in love with Tempted by Fire. I have been so immersed in her Reveler Series of late that I forgot that she writes other books.
Tempted by Fire is book one in Ms. Kellison's Dragons of Bloodfire series and wow, what a book it is. It was intense, emotional, exciting, romantic and absolutely fabulous. I loved everything about it!
Emerson Clark is bloodkin, whatever that means. She was raised in the foster system, the human foster system, and considers herself fully human. She really doesn't even believe in dragons. She just heard a distant relative say she was a dragon when she was very young and figured what the heck and put that on her scholarship applications. Oh man, she had no idea how her life would change. But it's been years and she is so fed up with the bloodkin and she is so quitting this job. Right after this last assignment.
Dragon shifter Thane Ealdian is at the end of his cycle, he is ever closer to changing to dragon for the last time. Only the unsolved mystery of what happened to his wife and son has kept him alive. Now, finally, the bodies have been found and he refuses to allow his enemies of old claim them as his. He has demanded a mediator and is not so patiently waiting for him. Only the him turns out to be the oh so sexy Emerson Clark and well sparks are flying. Suddenly, Thane has a whole new lease on life. Now he just needs to convince her that yes dragons do exist and yes you are one. See, easy peasy..
This was so much more than a boy meets girl story. Emerson has to discover her entire life. Who she is, what's her heritage and how she fits in. And Thane? Well he has his own surprises to deal with. Seems an old enemy might be innocent, maybe.. and old friend might be.. *grins* might be.. Nothing is as it seems and everywhere they turn is betrayal of belief at the very least. The only person they can rely on is Emerson's foster brother a wolf who's extremely unhappy with his pack and Thane's best friend/servant...
Just a wonderful story... Get it, enjoy it.. and let me know what you think.

Imagine an incredible world with dragon and wolf shifters and with blood feuds spanning centuries.
He was a match; she was flint. And between them both...fire.
TEMPTED BY FIRE by Erin Kellison was an original, very enjoyable tale featuring dragon and wolf shifters. It combined a romance, an enduring mystery and a plethora of fast-paced action. The book is the first installment in the author's new Dragons of Bloodfire series. It was the story of mediator Emerson Clark and dragon-shifter Thane Ealdian.
Imagine an incredible world with dragon and wolf shifters and with blood feuds spanning centuries. Add in slayers, romance and a plethora of danger and fast-paced action for a tale that will grab and hold your attention.
I liked both Emerson and Thane. She was feisty and a bit naive, at first. She was supposed to be a mediator between two dragon families when she was really an unbeliever that shifters existed! She thought she would just play along with her client's fantasies, but, to her credit, she came up to speed quickly thanks to Thane, a sexy black dragon. Thane was solely driven by revenge until he met Emerson. I loved how she made Thane actually want to live again. He was such a hot hero. Their romance was sweet and intense. LOL! I loved the hoards...
I thoroughly enjoyed this first installment in Erin's new paranormal romance series. Be prepared for a roller coaster ride featuring a solid storyline with a multitude of unexpected twists and dark turns with plenty of humorous moments. I first discovered Erin's writing with her addictive, highly original Reveler series and was thrilled to see that she was delving into the world of dragons. I love dragons! I would highly recommend it to anyone who revels in paranormal urban fantasies featuring shifters. I most definitely look forward to reading AWAKENED BY FIRE, the next book in Erin's Dragons of Bloodfire series!

Wowzer I was excited to get into this one because dragons can be so downright captivating. When written well you are consumed by the story and the characters within. The upside on this one it is a beginning to a new series also. This author tempts you right away to forget all else because you are with a dragon by the name of Thane who is making claim to some remains discovered of a female and son. The punch line is it turns out it was his wife and son from very long ago. Sent to negotiate the two claims on the remains is Emerson, mediator because only a Bloodkin can do it. Funny thing is even though she is told she is one she finds it humorous since she grew up in the foster system and not until she applied for money for college for what she put on her application did it start all this. One of her foster siblings was a wolf shifter so she was not totally in the dark on some things. Even though he has been hearing the call he must see to this one last thing and find a killer so Thane is not done quite yet. So when you get one immensely powerful determined male dragon who meets one equally determined fireball female who also happens to be a dragon and doesn't quite realize it fully yet things get going fast. This author also gives the story some great supporting characters that blended with these two you have one gripping, by the throat even, paranormal romance adventure. Getting to read a new series from beginning is like something born that if followed you watch it grow also. That will be the delicious thing about this one. Being shown the who, what and where paired with a growing relationship doesn't get any better then this. Interesting also see the stages of a emerging dragon for the first time. When the clash finally goes down who will triumph will be a fitting climax. Sweet, sweet ending also but will leave you hungry for more.
READ this last year then LISTENED to it yesterday. I liked the book so much better when I listened.
Really? A dragon wanting revenge for the killing of his family, 600 years after the fact? Some of these shapeshifters have a very looooong memory. LOL. That was however, the gist of the story. Who killed Thane’s wife and son, so long ago, and why? And there was an interesting, round-about, way he and Emerson figured it out, during the assassination attempts, that is.
One thing, among many, I liked Emerson was because she was funny and took everything with a grain of salt, once she got over the shock of all the blood when Thane killed someone. And I loved it when Thane asked Matthew, his butler/servant/friend/whatever, “I don’t suppose you’ll let me eat him? And Matthew just looked at him in answer.
A couple of times Thane thought about wanting Emerson in his bed but that was it, no other feelings whatsoever. There was absolutely nothing coming from Emerson, zip, zilch, nada, nil. Then at 80% he finally kissed her and they had sex AND it was NOT "sizzling hot," as two of the reviewers called it. I really liked Thane and Emerson/Ember but they didn’t have ANY chemistry so they could have been BFF's or something other than a twosome. It was an excellent story, though.
I liked Bryan, too. He was a great “brother. Ransom and Locke were a little odd but they were likeable. And I really liked Matthew. He was so sweet and caring.
The ending seemed abrupt but it was such a good story, when you listen to it.
As to the narration: Bernard Setaro Clark really did suck at the women’s voices but, wow, he read with such emotion and the men had such great voices that I found it easy to overlook the women’s manly tones. He really laughed, yelled, whispered, anything the book called for. Awesome narration.

OMG, I LIKED THIS ONE. There's something about an ancient, mostly feral dragon putting a leash on his desires that worked for me. You know, Thane just worked for me. He's ready to go to the big dragon meadow in the sky until he gets drawn into Ember's orbit. Given that she's clueless about what to expect from her life as a dragon, she needs him as much as he needs her.
*swoon*
I really liked them together. I liked that Ember was leery of Thane when they first met. I liked that she wanted nothing to do with dragons in general and had no idea what she'd gotten herself involved in.
Heck, I liked that I was kept guessing on who the bad guys was right up until it was revealed. Kinda even after it was revealed because I don't trust twisty plots.
Anyway. Total winner of a new series and I hope to see more of these dragons in the future.
3 Stars. It was nice enough, but I wasn't overly enamored by it. I found Ember a little annoying. She knew her foster brother was a wolf shifter (had even seen him shift); but for fully half of the story firmly refused to believe in dragon shifters, even with all the signs obvious and in her face. The last half of the story was a much more enjoyable read; at which time the loose ends were tied up really quickly. Then there was the overly cutesy ending. If this is the prequel to a new series, I may give it another shot, although I've never had much luck with Kellison's books.
