As the first anniversary of her marriage to Vice President Nick Cappuano approaches, Lieutenant Sam Holland is dreaming of Bora Bora -- sun, sand and a desperately needed break from the DC grind. But real life has a way of intervening, and Sam soon finds herself taking on one of the most perplexing cases of her career.
Government worker Josh Hamilton begs Sam to investigate his shocking claim that his parents stole him from another family thirty years ago. More complicated still, his "father" is none other than the FBI director. When a member of Josh's family is brutally murdered, Sam begins to question how deep this cover-up goes. Is it possible the revered director was part of a baby-napping ring and that others involved are also targets?
With a killer intent on deadly revenge and her team still reeling from a devastating loss, Sam's plate is full -- and when Nick and their son, Scotty, take ill, is her dream of a tropical anniversary celebration in peril too?

2024 Update I listened to the story this time and it was just a better reading experience with Eva Kaminsky’s storytelling skills. I also felt like Sam bent the rules more than I was comfortable with than before. My rating is unchanged.
2016 Review Sam Holland is waiting to learn her fate following her assault of fellow detective Ramsey who made fun of her ordeal with Stahl. She faces suspension and possible loss of command, in addition to legal charges. In the middle of all this, Sam’s approached by Josh Hamilton for help in investigating his questionable parentage. He thinks he was stolen as an infant. What makes this explosive? His father is the FBI director.
It was interesting to see Sam blend home and work as she investigates Josh’s case from the sidelines. There’s a surreal sense abound when she has to deal with issues at home in her role as a wife and mother, too. It felt like a life test for her, which she seemed to pass with exceptional ease. Josh’s situation quickly ramps up to a dangerous level and Sam threads that needle between her need to explore things on her own versus when to escalate the situation to her command.
I really liked this story as we see Sam seeming to have learned from her past “lone wolf experiences and embracing all aspects of her life, including wife, mother and Second Lady. The case has shocking results and the procedural aspect was intriguing. Sam just may have taken the steps to master having a career, being a mother and supporting her husband by owning her White House role. There are secondary storylines, too, that were heart wrenching and poignant. This was a good one and I cannot wait for the next book.

(I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review).
This is my first experience of a Marie Force story and although it's book ten of a series, it can be read as a standalone. However, I think maybe this is one of those instances where just because it CAN BE read as an independent story, it doesn't mean that it will work effectively that way for all readers. I felt very much like there was an assumption that readers already had an established relationship with the characters, which of course as a new reader, I didn't and consequently some elements did not work for me or warm my heart like I expected from this romantic suspense. Some of the dynamic between certain characters was a little perplexing, but again maybe if I had read the entire series I would have felt differently. The suspense element which hit its climax during the last ten percent of the story is quite engaging and made me want to continue reading. I've no doubt that fans of this series will potentially have a different view from me and that's one of the wonderful things about reading.

I am still completely in LOVE with the “Fatal" series from Marie Force! Sam and Nick are right up there with Eve and Rourke from the “In Death series as my all-time favorite romance series couples. Fatal Identity is the tenth book in the series and it is just as good as the first.
Sam and Nick are about to celebrate their one year wedding anniversary, but it will be a close call to making good on their getaway. Sam is put on suspension for her altercation with Ramsey and is waiting to hear if she will be prosecuted or not. Josh Hamilton, the son of the FBI Director, shows up and will only deal with Sam regarding his suspicion that he is not really a Hamilton, but a stolen baby from 30 years ago. Gonzo is still not handling his loss of his partner well and may lose Christine and his son. And for the first time, Nick is very sick, along with Scotty, which makes Sam realize she can’t be everywhere at once and learns to delegate more to her team.
There are many twists and turns in this book that had me worried at times for my HEA, but it happened and I couldn’t be happier. It is like catching up with old friends every time I read a new Fatal book with Sam and Nick and all the secondary characters. Off they go on their Bora Bora trip and I can imagine them very happy for now!
I really, really come to enjoy this series. But especially Sam and Nick.
The police cases are always unique and thrillingly captivating, but I have to honestly say, this time it the shit hit the ceiling. I was glued to my phone, and carried it with me everywhere, including bathroom, so I wouldn't have to press the pause button.
And that scene when she interrogates the wife at the end - OMG - I was driving down the freeway cracking up. I think people thought I was CRAZY!!!!!!
Sam and Nick's relationship was something I came to cherish. Even though Fatal Identity had some well earned tension, the way they handled it felt true to character. It wasn't added just for additional upheaval, the opposite actually, it was something Sam and Nick had to figure out themselves as part of their growing as husband and wife. And I thought they did a fabulous job!
All in all, I'm now a BIG fan of Marie Force and can't wait to dive into book 11!!!
Fatal Identity by Marie Force is a 2016 HQN publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
After all the terrifying events that took place in ‘Fatal Scandal, the next book, ‘Fatal Frenzy slowed things down and allowed Sam to address some heavy PTSD symptoms, and gave everyone else a chance to deal with the fall out. But, as cathartic as this was, for the characters and perhaps for the reader as well, I was happy to see this tenth installment get back to a more balanced pace.
Sam must cool her heels after being handed a suspension, while everyone nervously waits to see if the second lady will be charged with assault, after throwing what most of us will agree was a justifiable punch.
None the less, Sam finds herself embroiled in an explosive situation, when Josh Hamilton begs her to help him discover his true identity, after he begins to suspect the family he thought he was born into, may have kidnapped him a baby and raised him as their own. This is a shocking allegation all on its own, but as it turns out, Josh Hamilton’s father is none other than the director of the FBI. Wowza!
Things really get complicated, when Josh becomes the prime suspect in a shocking murder, prompting a closer look at the esteemed director’s family life.
Meanwhile, the team suffers another horrific blow, which leaves Gonzo in worse shape than he already was, while Nick and Scotty come down with an acute case of the flu, which could mean Sam’s anniversary plans are in jeopardy.
This is another explosive, high octane, super steamy, addition to this wildly popular romantic suspense series. There is a lot to analyze, so here goes:
I was pleased with nearly all the developments in this chapter of the series, in regards to the recurring characters. Gonzo has some serious moments of doubt, but I loved the way the author addressed these issues in such a realistic fashion.
Some real progress was made in other relationships and I was very relieved by how everything seems to be shaping up for our favorite couple and their close acquaintances and friends.
The investigation into the alleged baby kidnapping, is full of mind blowing twists, with the most scandalous revelations I’ve encountered in well, I don’t know when. Whew!
Overall, fans of this series will most likely find this latest addition as addictive and satisfying as they have all the prior installments. Personally, I closed this book with a feeling of deep satisfaction, because the story ties up a few loose ends from the last two books, and gives our favorite people a nice little reprieve they all deserve.
However, it does make me wonder what we might expect in the future. Hopefully, there will be wedding bells and the pitter patter of little feet!!
I did enjoy it but something was lacking. Maybe things are starting to be a little bit repetitive here. I love Sam ... and Nick. But again, we have Avery, crushing on Sam (what about Shelby?). We have Nick, jealous of Avery. Sam is suspended ... again. This is book 10. It is hard to keep things fresh maybe.
Will I read the next in the series. Probably. But this one was a bit disappointing.
There was a character called "Maura"! Don't see that name too often in books.
Irresistible! I wish I could give more than 5 stars! FATAL IDENTITY is another exciting addition to the series, filled with salacious scandals and more of the dreamy goodness of Nick and Sam. I can promise you that once you start reading this book, you won't put it down until the very last word. If you haven't read this series yet, I have one question for you: what are you waiting for?
What do you do if a man walks up to you and accuses one of the most powerful men in the country of kidnapping him thirty years earlier? Well, if you are Sam Holland, you investigate, never mind that you are on suspension from the department. Sam never met a case she turned away from and unbelievable as this one is, Sam is not going to walk away, even though she would be going up against the director of the FBI and the might of his agency at his disposal. What no-one is prepared for is the scandalous secrets, deceit and lies that are revealed, spanning several decades, ultimately ending in murder as the investigation deepens; and the potential fallout for one of the nation's top security agencies.
But Sam doesn't just get to play super cop. She is a wife and a mom and her love for her family is undeniable. She is settling in with her family and gets to show her softer and nurturing side when her boys fall ill, which I really enjoyed. And the sexy Nick Cappuano. I wouldn't mind finding him in my Christmas stocking this year. Smart, successful and so very supportive of his wife's career. You couldn't ask for a better husband.
There is a lot to love about this book, but little I can write about it, to avoid spoiling the experience for readers, but I cannot recommend this book and the entire series enough. I really hope that Ms. Force keeps the stories coming for as long as possible.

Brace yourselves! Book number 10 scores a 10! Marie Force once again has another surefire winner in the magnetic and extraordinary “Fatal series. After being suspended and sent home, Homicide Lt. Sam Holland can’t seem to escape murder and mayhem when a killer diller case literally shows up on her doorstep this one involving a high-powered government official. There are plenty of inventive and imaginative twists in this child kidnapping plot. Expect a great mix of deceit, lies and murder that seals the deal for a mind-boggling suspenseful read. Of course, love and heat-filled romance are always present when handsome and sexy Nick Cappuano and his beautiful wife keep things sizzling on the burner, as well. Yes, you’ll also find those snickerlicious moments that readers have come to expect and appreciate from our Vice President and his DC police lieutenant. Force’s signature crisp wit and intelligence in both the character interaction and dialogue are also in full force (yeah, I couldn’t help myself there!).
As time goes by, the couple and their adopted son, Scotty, have settled into a loving relationship and warm family life together. You’ll see more of all of them in a familial setting as Sam is called upon to do caretaking duty when flu season hits. A cast filled with other favorites from this series is always an added plus as well. One such favorite of mine, FBI Agent Avery Hill, steps forward in this storyline once again. I adore that man and it was nice to see him a bit more settled and happy in his life although still a bit awed by Sam.
No need to further tempt the fates and spoil the ride by giving any more details. Read the book blurb and you’ll find quite enough intrigue to prompt a one-click and begin another fun-filled adventure packed with suspense, heat and heart with Sam and Nick!
Thumbs up! High Fives! Bravo! Kudos! Way to go! Terrific! Outstanding! Loved it!
After being suspended for assaulting a fellow officer, Lt. Samantha Holland is approached by a man who needs her help. Josh Hamilton says that he was surfing the internet when he ran across an age-enhanced photo of a baby who was kidnapped thirty years ago. The picture looks just like Josh. He tells Sam that he never fit in with his family and now he knows why. Sam is going to send him to the police station until he mentions that his father is Troy Hamilton, the Director of the FBI. Sam decides to do a little sleuthing on her own before going to the Chief about her suspicions.
This is the tenth book in the Fatal series. There was a lot going on. Since Sam was suspended, she is stuck at home and can't go into the office. Her husband and her son both come down with the flu, so she is busy playing nurse to them. In the meantime, a death in the Hamilton family makes the police Chief wish he had Sam available for this case.
I liked this case and how it played out. It was a little easy to figure out, but still entertaining. My rating: 4 Stars.
I love this series, I really do, but I'm strarting to think that Nick and Sam are cursed!
They don't get to have a normal life! I got that the vice-president and homicide detective don't have an ordinary life, but for them it does get over the top! They'd not get to stay in bed when ill (fever+barfing...)!!!
Still I appreciated the lifght moments when Sam's snarky side came out! I also like Nick's possessive side, even if it was a little bit exaggerated.
This series does not get old. Sam and Nick are back and celebrating their one year anniversary. It’s hard to believe that so much has happened in this year and true to form there is another mystery at hand. A young man approaches Samantha, who is suspended for an event that occurred at the end of the last book, because he recognizes himself in an adult rendering of a Missing Child’s picture. He wants Sam to investigate. The catch? He is the son of the current FBI Director. For the first time in awhile, this mystery threw me for a loop. It kept me guessing and I could not have imagined the ending.
This series is wonderful not only for the suspenseful stories but also the family that makes up Sam and Nick’s world. It’s a family of team members, blood relatives, and yes, even some of the Secret Service agents. Nick has to navigate around his role as VPOTUS, but he always prioritizes his role as husband and father first. I may have said this before, but it is worth repeating, Sam and Nick have a model relationship. Simple, but not easy.
For the fans of the series, you will note that Marie Force throws an interesting tidbit or two that had me saying, "hmmm." First, it seems as though Sam's unwavering support from Chief Fransworth may be coming to an end. Sam is under scrutiny because she punched a fellow officer at the end of the previous book. He deserved it, but nonetheless, he wants to press assault charges. Chief Farnsworth, her godfather, let her know that he may no longer be able to protect Sam from the fallout from her unorthodox and often, rulebreaking methods of solving a crime. This is one of the reasons I like Sam. She operates in the gray. There are times she breaks the rules, but it is not without consequences.
*Spoiler Alert* Another interesting and disturbing issue is Avery's continuing obsession with Sam. He loves Shelby, but he still can't help fixating on Sam when he is in the same room as she is. He is confounded by his reaction. Is the author forecasting a future risk or is this just closure for a loose end? Nick and Avery do have a heart to heart, but I don't know if I fully trust that resolution. I think it is a odd thing to bring up (again) and I guess only time will tell.
IN A NUTSHELL: If you a fan, this will be a truly satisfying addition to the series. This book is just as romantic as the first, even more so because their love is tempered and enduring.
7/28/2016 5 stars! LMAO!!!! Just received an email from the author with a link to an explicit bonus story.... "Fatal Identity: After the Epilogue" from Sam's 1st person POV regarding her prep for her anniversary trip to Bora Bora. This is EXACTLY what I wanted, and was wondering why the author didn't include the deets of this part of the story originally because I imagined it would be hilarious. It was. :D
7/27/2016 4 stars. WOW!!! That was one helluva bizarre case for Sam and crew. No way did I have THAT one figured out before it was revealed. But the unusual crime hoopla was offset by a tamer story with Nick, Scotty etc. Was it just me that felt that? Sure there were meltdowns and presidential goings on but Sam's home life was more mellow (not that it's EVER as mellow as the average person) and her snark dialed back a level as well as the fun banter between Sam and her colleagues. But then again she WAS suspended for a few days (if you can call it that) and then there was the flu bug, etc. As Nick/Sam celebrate their 1 year anniversary it will be interesting to see how the story evolves after this bk.
Nick is still as wonderful as ever and his jealously over Agent Hill always provides some grins. I flew through this bk in a day, a definite page turner. Now it's time to do a re-read so to speak on audio. Unfortunately, now I have to impatiently wait for bk 11. Can this author write any faster???
There isn't a book in this series that I haven't adored. FATAL IDENTITY keeps the Sam and Nick train rolling with another fantastic story involving kidnapped children, the FBI and Nick proving why he's my freaking alpha male book husband.
I continue to read this series, but I am still not a fan of Sam. She continues to get away with things no other person would get away with. But, well, it is fiction, after all. Marie Force writes a really good RS and there are three couples that get it on in explicit detail. If you like that sort of thing, this is your book.
Sam has had quite a year since she married Nick and now finds herself in yet another situation where anybody else would be fired and brought up on charges. But, Sam gets, basically, a slap on the wrist. A few days on suspension and a small fine. Which turns out to be a good thing when Nick and Scotty come down with a nasty case of the flu. But at the same time a man approaches her needing her help and she just can't help herself. She ends up uncovering a thirty-year-old crime and a murder that just happened. Great way to serve her suspension.
4.5 Stars. Sam and Nick's story continues in this strong installment of the Fatal Series. I really think Force isn't slipping at all with this one. Something about the triteness of the last couple of books bugged me. I didn't feel that in this one at all. It was a good story...well told. I didn't see the twist coming at the end. Looking forward to the next!
Marie Force never disappoints with her Fatal Series! Lt. Samantha Holland has just been issued a suspension from the Police Department when a son of the director of the FBI asks for her help in finding out the truth about his origins. With so much on her plate as the wife and "Second Lady" to the VP of the United States and mother to their much loved, adopted son and caring for both who have been inflicted by a nasty case of the flu, then delving into the background of the FBI director, Sam faces a few obstacles but perseveres even when she also contracts the flu! Just love this series, a must read for those that like police procedurals with some humor, tense situations, and a few hot scenes.
From the blurb: As the first anniversary of her marriage to Vice President Nick Cappuano approaches, Lieutenant Sam Holland is dreaming of Bora Bora—sun, sand and a desperately needed break from the DC grind.
With a killer intent on deadly revenge and her team still reeling from a devastating loss, Sam's plate is full—and when Nick and their son, Scotty, take ill, is her dream of a tropical anniversary celebration in peril too?
4.5 After reading a couple of books I couldn't finish, I was afraid I've lost my reading mojo. It seems I just needed an interesting plot, a kickass heroine and a swoonworthy hero. Absolutely loved it. Nick and Sam keep getting better and better. I think Nick as Vice President adds an exciting layer to their relationship. Sam is such a badass and I love her snark. I thought the conflict was easily resolved in the end, but I enjoyed the dynamics of the whole gang in trying to solve the case.
Gonzo's problems kinda stilted the momentum of the flow which was why I deducted half a star. Also, I don't know how I feel about Avery. I mean, I'm glad he's there to provide us some possessive moments involving Nick, but I'm not liking him very much and I'm feeling sorry for Shelby.
All in all, an unputdownable read and that seems to be very rare for me these days.
I have loved every book in the Fatal series, and this one is no exception.
Samantha (Sam) Holland has been suspended from her job as Lieutenant of homicide for decking another police officer (totally justified, IMO). As she's leaving the police station, a low-level government worker begs her to look into a case for him -- he thinks he may have been kidnapped as a baby and raised as the son of another man. His "father?" The powerful head of the FBI.
From here, we go on another exciting adventure into both Washington's elite and its low-life criminals.
Very nerdy of me to say, but I feel like I'm seeing some old friends with each of these books. I really love this series.
Sam and Nick's story continues with Fatal Identity. Could the adopted son of the revered FBI Director be the baby kidnapped thirty years ago and never found? Sam is suspended and yet manages to find a way to keep herself involved unofficially. Great story with a few twists and turns, keeping me engaged and reading! The part where Avery has to look after Sam when she falls ill with the flu she caught from Nick and Scotty is quite comical.
This is the latest book in the Fatal Series. It's hard to say which one I love more because I love every one of them. Once I start reading one of these books I don't stop until I'm done. I feel like I know every character personally. I love seeing how each of their lives are going. I especially love Sam and Nick. They are perfect together. I can't wait till the next book I have a feeling it's gonna take us on another wild journey.
This book was a good mystery to me and the story line was very interesting. Sam was in the middle of an investigation while Nick and Scotty had the flu, which she later gets but even through it all she still went nonstop till the case was solved. The story ends with a happy ending and leaving us waiting for the next one. Total 5 star for me as always.
4.5 Stars I have enjoyed every single book in this awesome series. Once in awhile, you meet a couple who just touches your heart, and Nick & Sam is one of those couples for me. Nick continues to be his awesome, supportive, gorgeous, hot self in this book - he ranks high on my book boyfriend list. I loved him in Fatal Identity as he continued to prove what a great husband, father, friend, & VP he is. Sam shows so much growth in this book. She seems to come to terms with all her many roles: cop, wife, mother, daughter, friend, co-worker, & yes, even the Second Lady. Her speech near the end brought me to tears. Kudos Marie Force for another awesome addition to this series. Looking forward to the next one. A Must Read!
This book was fabulous! This was my first time reading a book in Marie Force’s Fatal series and I have to say, I was a tiny bit lost at times because I haven’t read the others. However, it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book AT ALL. Instead, it made me anxious to go back and read the rest! And now I’ll be on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens with these characters next.
One of the things that I absolutely loved about this book is that it isn’t just about one couple. I wouldn’t have expected to like having my focus split from the main H and h. But, it’s minor deviations that keep you invested in the entire cast of characters. Like I said, I can’t wait to go back and learn about them all from the beginning. Each of them captured a piece of my heart, making me laugh, cry, and love right along with them.
Nick and Sam though…I adore this couple. Their relationship is not only incredibly hot, it’s sweet and devoted. And, it’s not perfect. The world doesn’t stop with “happily ever after, life goes on and it’s messy and full of ups and downs. But, they handle the situations beautifully.
Sam is a spitfire. Her sarcastic wit, sharp intellect, and dedication to her job make for one hell of a woman. Oh, and then there is the fact that she is incredibly beautiful. I want to be her. She does seem to attract trouble though Following her on this journey was really fun.
Nick is everything you want in a hero. Smart, witty, supportive, loving, strong, possessive (but, not too much), deliciously sexy, a good dad, etc. etc. etc. Do I really need to go on? Those alone should have you running to the bookstore.
The storyline is intense, in the best way. Filled with action and intrigue, it’s is clear the author has done her research because it never felt cliché or over the top. It’s interesting without overwhelming me with terms and information I can’t understand. The book is fast paced and kept me glued to the pages the whole way through.
I highly, highly, recommend this book! I haven’t even read the other books and I would still recommend the whole series! I do suggest you read them in order as all 10 books are about the same couple, but, it isn’t necessary to enjoy this book. I can already tell that this whole series will be on my re-read shelf!
To say, I'm a huge fan of this series would be a vast understatement, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on this latest release. Which quite frankly did not disappoint, in fact, it was terrific, and in my opinion, this series just gets better and better. As Fatal Identity was packed full of suspense, emotion and heat. With a story that was equally gripping and confounding to the individual characters and group relationships as they struggle to deal with the aftermath of Detective Arnold's murder some six weeks previously and the impact it has, not only within the Homicide Department but with the families of their loved ones. Especially for Gonzo who has struggled since that terrible moment in Fatal Frenzy and the scenes between him and Christina were particularly emotional to read.
As for Sam she is struggling with being sidelined whilst a hot case is in progress, especially as she got the ball rolling. Even though it means time at home with husband Nick and son Scotty who have both been struck down with the flu; and all this comes at a time when she and the Vice President are more popular than ever before, but also have plenty of other issues to deal with, not just at work but home too.
And as usual, there is plenty of banter and hot moments between Sam and Nick, and I love how their relationship has evolved especially with Scotty now firmly in the mix. Who it's fair to say always brings humour and a smile to my face. And he's certainly one of many reasons why this story is one I can never put down no matter how many times, I read it. And I would certainly recommend it to all.
Sam and Nick are one of my favorite literary couples and their friends make for some drama and laughs. Marie Force is by far one of my favorite writers and I am a huge fan of both her Fatal Series and her Gansett Island Series. I'm sure I will add her other works to my reading soon.
This is such a weird case and time for Sam. Nick and Scotty are sick, she's just been suspended and a person she doesn't know has asked for and will only speak to the Second Lady. Not a good way to get to talk to Sam.
In this book she feels helpless in so many ways. The suspension, the hot case, Tommy and her squad's mourning over the loss of Arnold and it seems to just continue to get worse. Then when Nick is unresponsive after such a high fever she feels untethered and like she's helpless and not in control. Add one of the biggest cases of her career and one of her squad getting kidnapped and she is frustrated and angry.
This is one heck of a book and will keep you turning the pages as fast as you can. It is always over too soon for us Fatal Series fans but never disappointing!
Four Mysterious Stars! This is the tenth book in the Fatal Series and really should be read in order to fully understand it. I have not read any of the previous books so I was a little lost while reading this. Sam is a homicide detective and in this book we find her suspended. She is suspended for 4 days and then we hear about a scandal. The Scandal is about a child who is missing and could be the son of the FBI director. There is also some hot romance with, the hot alpha male Nick. This book is full of suspense, twists and turns, lies, murder and of course romance. Ms. Force writes a great story with wonderful characters. I enjoyed reading it but probably would have enjoyed it more if I first read the others. Recommend the full Series.
I received the book as an ARC for an honest review. This book was read and reviewed by Annamaria for Alpha Book Club.
When Josh Hamilton, the son of the director of the FBI, approaches Detective Sam Holland with the bizarre claim that he is the missing baby kidnapped from a Tennessee hospital 30 years earlier, the lieutenant is skeptical. But then, a member of Josh's family is found dead, and Sam begins to suspect a cover-up deep within the FBI.
Series note:This series contains several ongoing arcs, and should be read in order.
In a series with numerous far-fetched plots, Fatal Identity hits the ridiculousness jackpot. It requires a mindblowing degree of suspension of disbelief to accept the premise and explanation for the kidnapping, which is unfortunate, as the storyline has much potential.
The fact that Sam is able to circumvent her suspension and investigate the kidnapping with zero repercussions and even support from the brass is also infuriating. Sam's sense of entitlement only increases with each book, and the little growth she might have shown several installments ago is completely gone.
Another disappointing aspect is Agent Avery Hill's . This seemed to have been resolved in the previous book and to have it resurrected is cringeworthy, especially considering , who deserves better.
Nevertheless, there are one or two redeeming episodes in the book, such as Gonzo's struggle in the aftermath of and the Holland-Cappuano family's realistic bout of flu.
The only thing saving this series from the DNF pile is the buddy read in my group. Here's hoping something happens to improve it soon.
This book has me rather torn. On one hand, it was a decent read, but on the other, it felt very implausible. I hated the Avery situation, especially since he was with Shelby during one part of it, and kept thinking "Why can't he get over Sam?! This is bordering on obsession!" Sam also didn't really seem that concerned with her constant interference in cases when she's on suspension, and she comes across as too lucky to get into excessive trouble for the massive chip on her shoulder. It is very clear she's getting favoritism, maybe not because of her dad, but because of her case closure rate, and it just didn't feel realistic. The Cappuano family getting over the flu so quickly was slightly hard to swallow, as was the entire mystery plot. I know it seems like I despised this book, but my complaints didn't hinder me from enjoying the story overall. While I plan on continuing with the series, I think it will have to be from the safety of my local library system.
