Considered first modern story in Chinese, it is inspired by Gogol's story of same name, and like in that story, it is about a madman who is seeing things in a far better light than normal people. Not as funny though. It is written in criticism of tradionalism.

It is about a man who suffers persecution complex, goes mad after reading a few Chinese classics which mentioned the instances of cannibalism, including families exchanging children to eat and kill them during famines (they can't eat their own children). The practice was obviously cruel but no more cruel than the kind of practices societies often adopt in desperate circumstances. Anyway, to sacrifice some for sake of others, that is scapegoating, is what the metaphor of narrator's fear that people are going to eat them is for.

The weight was so great, I could not move. They meant that I should die. I knew that the weight was false, so I struggled out, covered in perspiration. But I had to say:
"You should change at once, change from the bottom of your hearts! You must know that in future there will be no place for man-eaters in the world . . . ."

Wanting to eat men, at the same time afraid of being eaten themselves, they all look at each other with the deepest suspicion. . . .
How comfortable life would be for them if they could rid themselves of such obsessions and go to work, walk, eat and sleep at ease. They have only this one step to take. Yet fathers and sons, husbands and wives, brothers, friends, teachers and students, sworn enemies and even strangers, have all joined in this conspiracy, discouraging and preventing each other from taking this step.

I've read this kind of diary too many times.

Salvem as crian?as...¡±

A Madman¡¯s Diary is my first Lu Xun story. It was published in 1918 in Republican era China. It¡¯s clearly inspired by Gogol¡¯s Diary of a Madman.

In the short story, a man is becoming increasingly paranoid. He believes everyone is out to get him.

Apparently it¡¯s a critique of Chinese society, but I could only interpret it in the the literal sense. Nevertheless, it was a pleasant read that I finished in a single sitting.

This short, conversationally-written text is beguilingly difficult to fully appreciate without a solid understanding of the text's social, cultural, and historic context. It was only with help of secondary sources (e.g., literary analysis) that I could grasp and admire the sophisticated and scathing commentary on the groupthink, scapegoating, and other group level defenses that LX found to permeate the then-Chinese society. I read this in the original Chinese.

I've read this three or four times in the last few years, and I love it more each time. Xun does such a great job making you feel uneasy both about the possibility that he might not be crazy at all, but also that his tone is so suspicious, it seems impossible that he isn't a little crazy. This middle ground perhaps means to communicate that when finding out something elemental and evil about the culture one lives in, you can start to go a little crazy for real, when you realize what you think isn't crazy. So this "madman" is perhaps correct that people are eating each other (think in a more metaphorical sense), but it is such a shock to his system that he is not able to accept it without also losing control of his psyche in other areas. Or perhaps he is only able to grasp the horror of the carnivorous social structure around him by going mad and envisioning what is more conceptual and less obvious as literal cannibalism. But the saddest thing of all is that the intro notes the author of the diary now has a good government job. That's just downright dark, Lu!

Very short story in the tradition of Gogol. With very few words Lu Xun manages to say a great deal about the estrangement of mental illness and share an evocative picture of small town China in the early 20th century. I recommend the audio book version of this - the names are carefully pronounced with their tones.

Read in the original Chinese. It is very disturbing to follow logical prose that nonchalantly expresses illogical ideas. And the ending -- ›]ÓгÔß^È˵ĺ¢×Ó£¬»òÕß߀ÓУ¿ -- is something else.

Ho ucciso mio padre
ho mangiato carne umana
ed ora tremo di gioia
(He matado a mi padre / He comido carne humana / Tiemblo de alegr¨ªa)

XX, si no a nivel mundial.
-?Pod¨¦is reformaros!

I love the contrast between the preface, written in classic language, and the diary, written in vernacular language. It is a very clever way to symbolise a conformist society through a scholar and the raw, unfiltered vision of the sickness this society creates, seen through the eyes of a madman who can¡¯t be heard.

The madman believes that everyone around him eats human beings which perfectly symbolises how Chinese society has been completely dehumanised.
Individuals have been shoved in specific boxes and it is impossible for them to fully exist outside of these roles and express themselves.
And anyone who tries to warn others, to make them see the reality, is dismissed as insane. They end up, just like the madman, locked up, silenced, and marginalized.

The fact that the protagonist has conformed to society and works as a public servant could be seen as Lu Xun showing that there is no hope in rebellion and that, in the end, everyone conforms to societal norms because they fear rejection.
However, the ending shows that this short story actually conveys a very hopeful message.

¡°Perhaps there are still children who have not eaten men ? Save the children¡¡±

Although this story was inspired by Gogol's Diary of a Madman, it is more sophisticated and meaningful, with more elaborate metaphors and a thought provoking, ironical ending (revealed at the beginning).
I especially liked the connection between this short story and the photograph that induced Lu Xun to pursue a career in literature.
In spite of not agreeing with his political thoughts, I like his viewpoint on the concept of oppression of the society and how he likens it to, well... you have to read the story.
