Already as a five-year old she made her own comics, but stopped, until she took up drawing comics at the age of 23. Her flatmate made her interested in comic fanzines then. With Rikedomen, she published her first own fanzine.
Her breakthrough as a comic artist followed with her first album Hundra procent fett ("One hundred percent fat"), which was published in 2005.[4] She regularly publishes in the comic magazine Galago in various magazines and newspapers such as Dagens Nyheter, Dagens Arbete, Bang, Aftonbladet and Ordfront Magasin.[5][6] She designed the cover for the 2013 album Shaking the Habitual by the band The Knife. She also made a comic strip for the band's website, which depicted income inequality in a satirical manner.

It's difficult to write a proper review of Liv Strömquist's Uppgång och Fall (in French, Grandeur et Décadence), since my reactions are so confused. First, it's a fantastically entertaining graphic novel: I literally couldn't put it down. My initial attempt, which I posted a couple of days ago, focusses on that side of it. But Strömquist isn't just trying to entertain you, she is deadly serious. This unassuming little book is, I kid you not, one of the best attempts I've seen in recent years to answer the question that's bothering pretty much everyone in the world who still has a functioning brain. You can phrase this question in many ways, some of them dry and academic in the extreme, but a straightforward way to put it would be: why is everything so totally fucked up?
Now of course I can already hear a fair number of people saying what do you mean, fucked up? Things have never been better. Guys, please try and look at the actual facts. (Remember facts? We used to think they were important). Most of the world's qualified scientists tell us that we are causing massive, irreparable harm to the environment, and that the consequences will be somewhere between very bad and utterly catastrophic. And yet the people who make the decisions are somehow ignoring these dire warnings, on the rather surprising grounds - when any grounds are even given - that said scientists are part of a massive global conspiracy to distort the truth. Well, agreed, anything is possible, but just use basic principles like Occam's Razor and cui bono. Perhaps this global scientific conspiracy exists, though it seems like a hard way to get a little research funding. Or perhaps the conspiracy is between the extremely rich people who stand to get even richer by continuing to behave in a totally irresponsible way and carrying on plundering the Earth. It seems to me that the second explanation is a whole lot more plausible than the first.
Strömquist starts off her book by telling you how mindbogglingly disconnected from reality these top decision-makers are. She has a wonderfully ironic sequence where she compares them with those Oriental sages who after a lifetime of spiritual discipline are able to lose track of past and future and only live in the present - except, as she points out, the CEOs who are busily leading the world to ruin are even better at it. And this is just the start. Having established what they're doing, she then introduces us to the official ideology that motivates so many of them, where the teachings of Ayn Rand play a startlingly important role. There's another great sequence where she gives you a quick tour of critical points in Rand's magnum opus, Atlas Shrugged, which she accurately describes as a science-fiction romance about hot capitalists. I have read Atlas Shrugged, and I found it very entertaining, but I also found Robert Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress very entertaining when I read it as a teen. If I had to take one of these books as a guiding philosophy, I'd pick Heinlein, but the right choice is obviously "neither". It is not sensible to let your life be guided by a hack science-fiction writer with weird homegrown political-ethical-sexual theories.
Continuing her rapid tour of the state of the world - Strömquist realistically appreciates that in the iPhone generation, no one is going to sit still for anything much longer than a TED talk - the next topic is how things got this way. Where do these weird people come from, who believe that the only way to run civilization is to push about half the country down to the poverty line so that they can engage in ever more repulsive acts of conspicuous consumption? Here, we have an engagingly savage attack on Chris O'Neill, the extremely rich American who in 2013 married Sweden's Princess Madeleine. People like Mr O'Neill, Strömquist tells us, come from families where the concept of love has been replaced with that of money. They have distant parents, who are never there and give them material goods instead. And when they grow up, the only way they have to try and find love is to carry on acquiring more goods. Well, I have heard less plausible theories.
I'll skip a couple of the entertaining parentheses, though the exhaustive list of all working-class characters appearing in the second volume of Knausgård's Min kamp is hilarious. What choices do we have? Segueing from her Princess Madeleine skit, Strömquist alertly points out that the people who say they want to get rid of the monarchy are a bit late to the party if they intend to come across as brave and forthright. In 2018, the monarchy no longer means anything. If these people had come out with their republican sentiments in 1518, that would have shown courage, but in 1518 they'd have been met with blank incomprehension. What do you mean, get rid of the monarchy? What other system could possibly work? And that's exactly where we are today when anyone is foolish enough to suggest that extreme laissez-faire capitalism might perhaps not be the ideal system. No one even seems to believe there is an alternative.
And finally, Ströquist gets to the central question. Again, this can be phrased in various dry, neutral and academic ways. But a direct way to put it would be: what the fuck can we do about this? Why has the left, which is supposed to act as a counter to this no-longer-even-disguised philosophy of unthinking, unrestrained greed, completely failed in its mission? Strömquist says, I think very perceptively, that they've forgotten how to be inclusive and instead allowed themselves to become exclusive. Once upon a time, if you were a worker, you were welcomed by the working class revolutionaries as a brother or a sister. That built big, powerful movements that could change things. People believed in them enough that they were literally willing to fight and die in their cause. But now, the left has become sidetracked into a wilderness of arbitrary moral judgements. If you use non-PC language, or buy the wrong kind of shopping bag, or read an inappropriate book, they want nothing to do with you. Nativist politicians have rushed in to fill this vacuum. They aren't fussy: if you're angry and white, they welcome you to the club and let you help them change the political agenda. Meanwhile, the left is posting witty comments on the internet. [Yes, I know...]
We need more people like Sister Liv. I have been corresponding with Ordfront, her publisher, and they assure me that an English edition of this book is in the pipeline and will soon appear. When it comes out, go buy yourself a copy. Maybe it'll amuse you. Maybe it'll make you angry. Maybe - who knows? - it'll inspire you to go out and actually do something.

Luin ensimmäistä kertaa Strömquistin tuotantoa ja huh miten timanttista settiä! Osuu asian ytimeen, sanoo rohkeasti ja sopivalla kiihkolla - sellaisella, joka tuntuu omalta. Itseäni ainakin välillä kyllästyttää sellainen hyssyttely tai kiltisti sanominen asioista, joista voisi sanoa suoraankin, joten tämän suorapuheisuus ja särmä iskivät.
Sellainen, jonka usean pitäisi ehdottomasti lukea.
Omaan makuuni tämä teos, sarjakuva, manifesti - mikä ikinä - on lähes täydellinen. Ainoa mikä harmittaa on se, että tämä ei välttämättä ole se teos, johon tulisi sattumalta tartuttua ainakaan niiden, joiden tämä pitäisi lukea. Voi siis olla, että tämän lukevat ne, joille nämä jutut ovat jo tuttuja. Vaan kyllä tästä voimaa saa ja uusia ajatuksia varmaan ihan lähes jokainen lukija. Niin ainakin toivon.
Sellainen, jonka usean pitäisi ehdottomasti lukea.

Informativt, vasst och roligt. Den sista delen om vänstermänniskors fail skulle jag vilja gnugga i näsan (hårt) på alla tumblerinas som tycker att de är progressiva när de a) jagar kändisar som sa något dumt för 15 år sedan och som bett om ursäkt och bättrat sig sedan dess b) försvarar fiktiva karaktärs sexliv vildsint c) rent allmänt ägnar för mycket tid åt att kämpa för fiktiva karaktärers rättigheter istället för exempelvis...riktiga existerande människor.
(Nu snackar jag inte representation och mångfald inom fiktion, vilket är toppen, utan exempelvis fel gay svart kvinnlig karaktär blev ihop med fel annan gay aromantisk asiatisk transfeminin karaktär så nu dödshotar och doxar vi skaparen till storyn för hen är en ond människa och förtjänar att dö. Det är progressivitet på fel sätt. SLUTA).

Strömquist on kyllä parasta, mitä sarjakuvalla on tarjota yhteiskuntakriittiselle, huumorintajuiselle femakolle <3.
Nauroin ääneen monet kerrat ja tunsin ikäviä pistoja lukiessani siitä, kuinka oikeiston nousun myötä vassarit ja muut kapinalliset ;) on herenneet kapinoimasta asioita vastaan ja siirtyneet demonisoimaan yksilöitä, sanoja, mielipiteitä.
Yritän parantaa tapani. Ja toivon, että YK oikeasti perustaisi ohjelman, jossa yritettäisiin päästä liiallisesta rikkaudesta eroon.

Terävää yhteiskuntakritiikkiä luokasta, kapitalismista ja liberaalipiirien ongelmista. Erityisesti luokan merkityksen kuvaajana Strömquist on taitava. Myös vasemmistopiirien kritisointi on tarpeellista: feministinen keskustelu kaipaa tosiaan sitä, että yksittäisten ihmisten syyllistämisen ja inhoamisen sijaan luodaan uusia, parempia toimintatapoja vanhojen ongelmalliaten rakenteiden tilalle.

Jälleen aivan loistava sarjakuva Strömquistilta. Pidän näissä erityisesti siitä miten Strömquist onnistuu kyseenalaistamaan sekä tekemään huomioita sellaisista asioista mitä harva on koskaan tullut ajatelleeksi, tällä kertaa erityisesti luokan kohdalla. Tai on saattanut tulla ajatelleeksi mutta asioista on harvoin avattu näin selkeällä (ja hauskalla) tavalla. Vahvuus hänen kirjoissaan on se että ne eivät ole sävyltään tuomitsevia vaan pikemminkin ohjaavat ajattelemaan asioita uudelta kannalta. Kirja on hyvin kriittinen kapitalismia kohtaan mutta kyllä vasemmistokin siinä aika monta sivullasta joutuu ottamaan vastaan.

I really love how Liv portrays different subjects from relationships to capitalism in her books. this one lived up to expectations
at first I was sceptical about her romanticising socialism but she mocks herself later in the books and dedicates the whole chapter to superficial morality a lot of leftists have. in general, it still is a bit of a naïve book with the “we have to end extreme wealth once and for all� idea, but I really enjoyed her arguments and humour

Osuvaa ja suorapuheista kapitalistisen talousjärjestelmän kritiikkiä. Sisältää myös yhden tarkkanäköisimmistä vasemmistolaisen moralismin analyyseistä, mitä olen lukenut.
Ja tietysti sarjis on myös hauska!
Toki kirja on paikkaan sidottu, mutta itselle tuntemattomien ruotsalaispoliitikkojen, -liikemiesten ja -julkkisten paikalle voi kyllä helposti löytää suomalaiset vastineet.
Ainoa kauneusvirhe on tekstivoittoisuus ja sivujen tukkoisuus. Voi olla kyse siitä, että suomeksi käännetty teksti vie enemmän tilaa kuin ruotsinkielinen alkuperäisteksti. Jäin kaipaamaan myös lisää herkullisia keräilykuvia!
Ja tietysti sarjis on myös hauska!

Srömquistin sarjakuvat onnistuvat aina laajentamaan tajuntaa. Tässä teoksessa ollaan suurten poliittisten teemojen äärellä, kun ruoditaan esimerkiksi, miten suuryritysten valta ylittää valtioiden vallan ja miksi tärkeidenkin aiheiden äärellä riidellään pikkuasioista ennemmin kuin edes pyritään saamaan aikaan todellista muutosta. Tämä tehdään ymmärrettävästi ja jopa hauskasti, vaikka aiheet ovatkin kaukana kevyestä. Hetkittäin ehkä vaikutti, että ajattelussa vedettiin mutkia liiankin suoriksi ja monet esimerkit olivat ruotsikeskeisiä, mutta niiden globaali yhteys kuitenkin aukesi hyvin. Keskiluokkaistaustainen feministi tunnisti itsensä kiusallisen selvästi keskiluokkaistaustaisen feministin kuvauksesta. Lähteistä suuri plussa aina ja ikuisesti!

Klockrena analyser om vad som gör vänstern svag och vad vi kan göra åt det, varför det är pga kapitalism och nyliberalism som klyftor mellan rika och fattiga ökat och varför det är den rika eliten som är problemet, snarare än symtomet fattigdom. Liv Strömquist sätter ord på allt detta, och tydliggör hur man kan som socialist kan bli mer hoppfull inför framtiden. Lite synd bara att vissa analyser upprepats i poddcasten Lilla drevet, så har redan hört det. Men endå, helt klart värd att läsas.

J'aime tous les livres de Liv Stromquist, mais j'ai particulièrement apprécié celui-ci, notamment dans son analyse du déclin de la gauche et des mouvements progressistes actuels, qu'elle attribue au moralisme et à l'absence d'un projet collectif révolutionnaire.
Avec son humour grinçant et sa rigueur habituelle, elle déboulonne plusieurs mythes de l'ultraliberalisme et brosse un portrait cynique de notre société fragmentée.

Une BD jubilatoire signée Liv Stromquist !
Cette fois, l'autrice suédoise s'attaque au capitalisme, au néo-libéralisme, aux classes sociales et à la gauche (politique).
Le livre est paru en 2016 mais il n'a pas vieilli. Tout ce que j'y ai lu et appris s'applique encore aujourd'hui, en 2024.
Merci à l'autrice de m'avoir un peu plus écarquillé les yeux sur notre système absurde / dégueulasse / à bout de souffle.

Jälleen kerran tarkkanäköistä ja hauskaa luettavaa! Tykkään Strömquistin teoksista PALJON. Kirja on myös visuaalisesti hieno ja monipuolinen. Sisällöstä erityismaininta oman toimintaympäristön kritiikille, se oli virkistävä puheenvuoro ja täydensi hyvin koko teosta.

Jälleen erinomainen ja hauska lukukokemus Liv Strömquistin parissa! Tarkka kriittisyys, tiivis analyysi ja tällä kertaa mukana myös kriittinen katse Strömquistin omaan toimintaympäristöön. Luokka, luokkaerot ja taloudellinen epätasa-arvo pöllytettiin huolella tämän sarjakuva-albumin sivuilla.

En härlig bok om kapitalism. Jag skulle uppskatta om boken gick lite djupare och visade ett mer komplex perspektiv men det skulle egentligen inte passa seriealbum formaten. Jag skulle rekommendera den till alla som har just börjat vara intresserade av att lära sig varför kapitalism inte funkar och vill starta med något lättläst.

Kertakaikkisen herkullista länsimaisen finanssiyhteiskunnan kritiikkiä. Miksi ihastelemme itämaisia ajattelijoita näiden mindfulness-taidoista, kun todellisen hetkessä elämisen suurimpia mestareita ovat länsimaiset menestyjämiehet, jotka pystyvät elämään täydellisesti hetkessä, välittämättä lainkaan siitä, miten maailma tuhoutuu ympärillä?
Olisipa hienoa, jos kirjassa esitelty YK:n, Maailmanpankin ja Kansainvälisen valuuttarahaston ohjelma liiallisen vaurauden poistamiseksi toteutettaisiin oikeasti –tämä on niitä elämän suuria turhauttavia juttuja, joissa ongelma on tuskallisen selvä ja pienen ihmisen mahdollisuudet vaikuttaa niin kovin olemattomia. No, ainakin näitä ajatuksia voi levittää vaikkapa kehumalla tätä Liv Strömquistin todella mainiota sarjakuva-albumia näin julkisesti.
Jälleen kerran siis Strömquistilta albumi, jossa sarjakuva on hukkua tekstimassojen alle, mutta jossa on sen verran tärkeää asiaa helposti sulavassa muodossa, että soisin kaikkien tämän lukevan.

Ännu lite mer dåligt samvete från Sveriges bästa samhällstecknare.
Jag tycker tonen i denna är lite mer allvarlig än tidigare, men det kan bero på mig också. Den första serien dock, om företagspamparna som mindfulness-gurus, den skrattade jag högt åt!
Och som alltid får man lära sig ofantligt mycket om orättvisa och vill genast ut på gatorna och ta tillbaka välfärden.
Klass och ekonomi.
Extra intressant är avsnittet om hur den svenska vänstern går mot moralism snarare än att försöka ändra grundläggande strukturer, p g a hopplöshet. Intressant men nedslående.

Nousu & tuho oli napakka, provosoiva ja tarkkanäköinen yhteiskunnallinen sarjakuva, jossa Strömquist käsittelee kapitalismia ja äärimmäistä rikkautta tarkkanäköisesti - joskin hieman ristiriitaisesti syyllistyessään itse samaan, josta vastavoimaan ryhtymätöntä vasemmistoa hieman moittii, ihan aiheellisesti tosin.
Visuaalisesti vähän ärsyttävä, mutta tavallaan sekin provokaationa toimii. Lukisipa tätä nekin, joille kapitalismi ja vapaa markkinatalous on yhtä suuri uskonto ja kyseenalaistamaton tosiasia kuin 1600-luvun kansalaisille monarkia oli.

Som vanligt, sylvasst och på pricken, sticker Liv hål på det mesta omkring oss. Som en politisk essä, väl underbyggd med argument och studier, men paketerad som ett seriemagasin. På ytan en glättig och färgglad liten skrift men inuti döljer sig tankarna hos en författare med en oerhört skarp hjärna och genomskådande ögon. Tack för Liv!

Toujours un plaisir de lire Liv Strömquist, qui s'est éloigné pour cette 3e publication française de ses sujets de prédilection (la femme et sa place dans la société) pour se concentrer sur l'économie et la répartition des richesses. Une plume acérée, et toujours très drôle. Chaque page est un délice et le trait faussement naif renforce la justesse des propos.

Pas mon préféré des trois que j’ai lus, le style m’a semblé un peu caricatural par moments et Strömquist tire quelques conclusions hâtives mais certains passages sont très intéressants (notamment celui sur la gauche moralisatrice).
