You cannot imagine how excited I was to see that Harry Hole was back! I was so sure that had decided to move on to other things after the last book but thankfully I was wrong and here is Harry called back from his quiet job as a college lecturer to chase the one who got away.
And this is not just any Harry Hole book but one that is up there with his best work. Harry has become a legend in his own life time. He is still just as flawed, still an alcoholic, still unable to completely relate to anyone but also still a brilliant detective.
This is another series that needs to be read in sequence in order to appreciate it fully. Many characters are there from previous books including Rakel and Oleg and one of the best things about this book is to see the way these people have grown and changed. The action is frequently full on and scary, interspersed with lots of interesting police work.
The ending is just brilliant and guess what! There's a strong indication on the very last page that there has to be another book.

4.0 stars� I am a longtime fan of Jo Nesbo and try to read at lest one of his Harry Hole suspense novels each year. For the most part, these books are awesome due to the time and effort Nesbo puts in writing the eccentric retired detective, Harry Hole, and the very strange, psychopathic villains that are always a staple of these books. “The Thirst� is no different with Hole coming out of retirement once again to assist the police in attempting to identify and arrest a blood drinking killer known as The Vampirist. In order to get Harry to assist the police, the chief allows Harry to form his own task force with anyone he wants including police officers, forensic specialists and a scholar whose expertise is vampirism. As the plot unfolds, it gets a little convoluted with so many moving parts and coordination by the villains it seems a little far-fetched and forced. Despite this, the book managed to hold my interest to the end and I would recommend it. There were also a few plot “twists� that are part of Nesbo’s signature style that he uses one too many times in this one so that they lost their effectiveness: making the reader believe an act is happening to one character when it really is happening to another. It was almost like a party game at the end and I got pretty good at anticipating when the author was trying to fool me. All in all another solid effort from Nesbo, even with the small issues that I found in the book.

Harry Hole #11: Lying in a pool of blood, the investigator couldn't help notice that there just wasn't enough blood from such a severe neck wound; a few days later Harry Hole and a few others were convinced that the killer had drank her blood; a killer with the thirst!

An easy, coasted to 9 out of 12, Four Star read.

The opening of the eleventh entry in the Harry Hole series finds the famed Norwegian detective happily retired from the homicide division and teaching at the police academy. He's clean, sober and recently married, building his relationship with his wife and his stepson. Hard as is may be to believe, Harry Hole is actually happy.
Any fan of the series knows that this can't possibly last long, and Harry fears it as well--he knows that his life is too good to be true. Sure enough, when two women are murdered in a particularly fiendish way after accepting Tinder dates, it's clear that a new serial killer is haunting Oslo. And, of course, Harry Hole has built his reputation on hunting serial killers. No one does it better. But when the Police Chief asks Harry to return to homicide and help track down the killer, Harry refuses, insisting that he will not sink back into that swamp again. The chief, though, brings pressure to bear, effectively making Harry an offer that he cannot refuse, and soon Hole is back on the job, running his own small team in an effort parallel to the main investigation.
The plot thickens when Harry realizes that the person most likely guilty of the crimes is an old nemesis who eluded capture a few years earlier, and soon the chase is one with Harry and his old antagonist battling it out.
The killer is a monster of the first magnitude and this novel flirts with crossing into the realm of the horror genre. Like all of the books in this series, psychological themes are front and center, and the most interesting case study is Harry Hole himself, who remains one of the most complicated and compelling figures in crime fiction. A lot of the earlier cast members are present for this outing, and as always, the tension is thick.
It's very hard to say more about the plot without giving too much away; suffice it to say that the plot is complex and turns in a number of unexpected ways. It's another page-turner from Jo Nesbo that will keep readers up well into the night and scare the living daylights out of a lot of them in the process.

SYNOPSIS
When two women die in similar circumstances, Harry Hole climbs out of his hole (sorry, I had to) to chase a demon from his past.
MY OPINION
I've had this book on my physical TBR forever but the length always scared me. But since I've gotten through a few miss thiccums in June and July I dove right in. I'm glad I started at #11 in the series (LOL) because I could NOT handle Harry Hole being drunk on the job and hailed as this super detective. Absolutely not. Apparently this is his first book where he's sober? 10 books of wilding? No thanks. Also it felt like Nesbo watched Pirates of the Carribean and thought: "What if Jack Sparrow was a Norwegian detective?" And then Harry Hole was born.
I was drawn to this book because I 'love' (for lack of better word) the concept of social media or dating apps being used by the baddie to find victims. We talked about this on Novels & Nonsense Podcast, but I think it's because it could really happen IRL. Anyways, this 'trope' wasn't an important part of the story, but nonetheless I found this an interesting and engaging read despite being LONG. The vampirism aspect was certainly unique.
Where I struggled was the unnecessary (and unchecked) racism. Yes, the racist character was was intentionally unlikeable, but we're not gonna smack tf outta someone who uses racial slurs in a police briefing??? Another aspect was the random political ramblings that felt more like Nesbo wanted to get something off his chest. For example, the whole abortion 'discussion' between Dr. Steffens and Hole, where Steffens crudely describes abortion and says he 'sides with the liberal heathens' (but not really). This had no correlation to the outcome of the case, yet we had to endure two pages of this?? For what???
Oh and if 'male gazey' writing drives you bonkers, skip this. The first time Katrine Bratt is introduced in this book, Nesbo writes: She had often wondered if she was fundamentally different from other women. They had a testosterone level somewhere between five and ten percent of their male colleagues, whereas hers was closer to twenty-five percent. ... As far back as she could remember it had made her far hornier then any of her female friends had ever admitted to being. .....Ok???? Did you want a cookie or something? Why are you telling us this right before you brief your team about a woman being bitten to death??? Katrine really reminded me of Baxter from the Ragdoll series by Daniel Cole. I hated her too. A bad ass, strong women doesn't need to be unnecessarily rude and a sex addict.

The baddie seemed blatantly obvious to me, but I did appreciate Anders and Dr. Steffens being red herrings. I mean c'mon, the psychologist who has dedicated his life to his proving vampirism is legitimate is behind the murders that have lended legitimacy to his previously dismissed work ??? SHOCKING 🙄🙄🙄 Also, when he admits to Katrine that his patient files were stolen and she doesn't follow this up with 'write us a list of your patients' it was quite obvious it was him. I hate when the police sidestep basic processes for the sake of a 'shocking' reveal later. If anyone remembers this book in great detail, can you let me know if Smith reveals that Alexander Dreyer (Valentin) was his patient before Harry takes him to Lenny Hell's house? I don't remember this being revealed because otherwise the case should've been wrapped up much faster. Also, it didn't seem like a big deal that Smith had been sitting on this bombshell connection between Lenny and Valentin?? I think I missed something.
When Harry is low-key dying in the boat, he 'remembers' a sex scene with an unnamed woman. I'm assuming that it was Katrine and she's pregnant with Harry's baby but passing it off as Bjorn's? This was another point against Katrine. Girl was SOBER and took advantage of a man drunker than a skunk who's WIFE IS IN A COMA??? Again, it's giving me Baxter from Ragdoll. BIG ICK.

Will I read another Harry Hole? Maybe... but from the synopsis' of book 11 & 12, it looks like Harry fell off the wagon (again), so I'm not really interested about him being drunk on the job.
PROS AND CONS
Pros: despite being long af, I wasn't ever bored
Cons: didn't really care for any of the characters, some basic police work overlooked for the sake of the twist, unnecessary soap box ramblings, plot holes

I just love this series! It keeps getting better and better!
Harry Hole is back!
Working as a lecturer and married to Rakel, Harry is content. But true to form, Harry's happiness doesn’t last long. Drawn into a murder investigation to catch an elusive serial killer, Harry’s life slowly starts to spiral out of control.
Of course, all is not as it seems, as Nesbo has once again created a multi layered mystery/thriller. The ending sets things up for some rather interesting developments in Harry’s life. Can’t wait for the next book!

Λίγα λόγια λοιπόν, κάποιες ώρες μετά από έναν πραγματικό μαραθώνιο ανάγνωσης, που είχα καιρό να κάνω και που το ευχαριστήθηκα ιδιαίτερα... Αν και για ένα τέτοιο βιβλίο θα το ξανάκανα ευχαρίστως, όταν τελείωσα χθες κατά τις 2 τη νύχτα ήθελα αέρα, αλλά πού να βγεις έξω όταν έχεις μόλις τελειώσει Νέσμπο... Άνοιξα λοιπόν απλά - με ανάκληση - το τζάμι
Τι να πρωτοπώ λοιπόν για το βιβλίο... Πάμε από τα βασικά: αν δεν έχετε διαβάσει ξανά Χάρι Χόλε, μην το διαβάσετε. Δεν είναι για εσάς. Αρχίστε από την αρχή: Θέλετε από τον Κοκκινολαίμη, θέλετε από το Χιονάνθρωπο, βρείτε μια αρχή και συνεχίστε. Η Δίψα είναι για σκληροπυρηνικούς του ήρωα, που μας είχε λείψει από την τελευταία του περιπέτεια πριν από σχεδόν 3 χρόνια (2 και κάτι για μένα!)
Όσοι αγαπάτε τον ήρωα όσο εγώ και δεν θέλετε να ξέρετε τίποτα για την πλοκή, μη συνεχίζετε να διαβάζετε. Δεν θα αποκαλύψω κάτι ουσιασ��ικό, αλλά θα είναι καλύτερη η αίσθηση αν δεν ξέρετε απολύτως τίποτα...
Πάμε λοιπόν: θυμάστε που στην Αστυνομία κάτι συνομιλίες με έναν πελάτη του χοντρού ψυχολόγου δεν έβγαζαν νόημα; Κάποιες σκηνές, προς το τέλος ιδίως, φαίνονταν ότι δεν ανήκαν στην περιπέτεια του βιβλίου και δεν δόθηκαν απαντήσεις; Ε, καιρός να δοθούν... (ο Νέσμπο είχε έτοιμη στο μυαλό του, 3 χρόνια πριν την τελευταία περιπέτεια, που μας έλεγε κιόλας ότι ο Χάρι τον κούρασε και σκέφτεται να τον αφήσει... σιγά... καταραμένος θα είναι να τον συνεχίζει!)
Για το δολοφόνο τι να πω.... καμία αγωνία για το ποιος ήταν, μόνο ποιες θα είναι οι παράπλευρες απώλειες... ώσπου..... 150 σελίδες πριν το τέλος, τα πάντα ανατρέπονται.... η αγωνία χτυπάει κόκκινο, η μηχανή του καφέ φτιάχνει κι άλλη κούπα για να αντέξεις να διαβάσεις τη συνέχεια, κάποια στιγμή δεν εμπιστεύεσαι πια κανέναν και τίποτα και μετά οι αποκαλύψεις σε χτυπάνε η μία μετά την άλλη (σαν αυτό που χτύπαγε το Χάρι με μανία ένα πράγμα!)
Όσο για τις τελευταίες σελίδες και συγκεκριμένα την τελευταία παράγραφο... χμ, ήδη ξέρουμε το δολοφόνο του επόμενου; Άντε να δούμε!
Όσο για τους ήρωες: όλοι οι παλιοί αγαπημένοι (όσους αφήσαμε ζωντανούς τουλάχιστον), όπου καινούριοι (που επίσης θα αγαπήσουμε) έρχονται να προστεθούν.... Άντε, στο επόμενο και ο Όλεγκ με μεγαλύτερο ρόλο :P

In this eleventh book in the "Harry Hole" series, the Oslo police detective is chasing Valentin Gjertsen, a serial killer who's been Harry's nemesis for years. The book can be read as a standalone but readers familiar with the series will understand the characters' motivations better.
As the story opens, recovering alcoholic Harry Hole - who's probably the best detective in Oslo - has been on the wagon for three years.
Harry is finally married to the love of his life, Rakel Fauke, and - because of a promise to Rakel - is teaching at the Police College rather than doing active detective work.
Meanwhile, a sadistic killer is using Tinder to meet and murder women. After a Tinder meet-up, the women's throats are ripped out with 'iron dentures' and their blood is drunk. Psychologists conclude that the killer is suffering from 'vampirism'.....a compulsion to consume blood.
Clues at one of the crime scenes point to a suspect named Valentin Gjertsen. Harry had caught Valentin years before and sent him to prison, but the killer escaped and had plastic surgery to make himself unrecognizable. It appears that Valentin is back in Oslo, killing women to satisfy his disgusting cravings. The psychopathic killer is also gleeful about matching wits with Harry once again.
Police Chief Mikael Bellman - an adulterous, exploitative, prick who's being considered for Minister of Justice - wants the perp caught quickly.....to benefit his career. Thus Bellman blackmails Harry into taking a leave from teaching to chase the killer. Harry forms an 'adjunct detective squad' consisting of himself, an up-and-coming young police officer, and a psychologist who's writing a Ph.D. dissertation on vampirism.
While Harry is trying to catch the vampirist, other things are going on in the novel: Rakel gets very sick and has to be placed in a medical coma; Bellman's wife gets fed up with his womanizing and plans to get revenge; a mediocre cop extorts Bellman into making him a detective; a rapist called the fiancé - who forces his victims to give birth to his children - is getting released from jail; and more.
The story turns out to be very complicated - maybe TOO complicated - and I almost needed a spreadsheet to keep up with the machinations of all the characters. Nevertheless this is a good book, recommended to mystery lovers.....especially fans of Harry Hole.

It's official: Nesbø has outdone even himself with this BRILLIANT book. I honestly was so sad for this book to end - I miss Harry already. THE THIRST is Nesbø at his finest: he's crafted a gritty, chilling, violent, emotional, utterly immersive crime novel. I couldn't get enough. Plus: the ending of this book?!?! Talk about a dramatic and BRILLIANT conclusion to this twisted story. I love Harry SO much, and this book also showed how flawed & human he is. Which made me so sad, but I also loved it.

The Thirst is another solidly entertaining installment of the Harry Hole series. This time, a serial killer is targeting women on Tinder, killing them by biting and draining them of their blood. Harry is no longer with the police force, but he recognizes from the murders that a killer from his past is back.
This series has been so consistently compelling, and this book is no different. Each of the five books I've read so far (I started with The Snowman - #7) has been gripping and fast-paced. This time, there are a number of shifty characters. I thought I had it all figured it, but I totally didn't and the end completely surprised me. It was all great fun.
Sometimes I think: poor Harry! This guy just can't catch a break. All he wants to do is to live a normal life being a lecturer at the police academy and hanging out with his wife and kid. But murders keep dragging him back, and he always ends up mentally and physically beaten up. But I guess if he had that peaceful life, then we wouldn't have any more stories to read.
I'm definitely going to continue with this series. I only have one more to read before I run out of the new books, and then I'll have to go back to the beginning and read #1-#6 that I've skipped.

Have I mentioned I like Jo Nesbo? What about Harry Hole? Oh. The fact that I’ve read 11 of these gives you a big fat clue! 😂. Harry is a lecturer at the Police College in Oslo, he’s married to Rakel and sober. Oleg is at Police College and in a relationship. Happy days. Until a vampirist goes on a rampage. The delightful (not) Mikael Bellman blackmails Harry to come back and assist DI Katrina Bratt and her team. What follows is dark, twisty, full of ups and downs and I loved it!!!

I thought I'd never finish this book. It is was too long and too gruesome. Much as I have loved the Harry Hole series, I doubt that I will follow it any further. Nesbo is, I think, aware of being stuck in a rut and, in recent episodes, has fiddled with the concept of Harry's demise. Unfortunately, I think he has painted himself into a corner and is grasping for ever more outrageous solutions to dig him out. Fundamentally I find the serial killer to be a poor focus for a murder mystery unless attached to an interesting and coherent motive. Unless, perhaps, you have created Hannibal Lechter. Valentin is simply trite and nasty, his continuation from Police being a poor idea. The set-up for another sequel is laboured and predictable; it's gone time when Nesbo should have broken free of this cycle. After the disappointment of Police, great for the most part but becoming too convoluted by the end, The Thirst has crossed the line. In its nastiness it is transgressive, failing to achieve the catharsis of previous works in the series. It also, most damningly, fails to suspend disbelief � I don't buy much of what passes for plot here. Nesbo is still a fine writer, but he needs to get back in touch, with humanity, with himself and with Harry Hole.

The reader can always expect a treat when Harry Hole re-emerges on the written page. Nesbø's latest novel is no exception. While Nesbø has taken his protagonist on many a wild ride, there is always something sinister and dark that pulls the reader (and the jaded murder detective) back into the mix. As the novel opens, a woman is on a date in a local watering hole, having trusted the swipe-match benefits of Tinder. When things do not go as planned, she returns to her flat, seemingly alone. However, someone lurks in the shadows, attacking her before leaving a dead body with a distinct mark. When Oslo Police begin their investigation, they cannot help but wonder if this mark, along the neck, could have been left by... a vampire? When another body turns up and there are no concrete leads, a familiar name begins being bandied about as a possible lifeline to solving the case. Harry Hole is now an instructor within the Police College, happy to lecture and discuss the former profession that brought him much satisfaction, but also fuelled his worst nightmares and led to his downward spiral into a personal abyss. Agreeing to run a parallel investigation, Hole begins looking into the murders, which hold a very unique and possible fetishistic curiosity. As Hole digs deeper, his recollections of being a part of the police return, more intense than ever, though he also cannot dismiss the angst brought on by certain of his colleagues. When a personal emergency strikes, Hole must find the time to piece of the shattered pieces, which not letting the case disintegrate. A suspect comes to mind and Hole does all he can to bring them to justice, entering a violent confrontation. The evidence is all there, as Hole learns more about the dark world of vampirism. However, with such an open and shut case, questions remain as to whether the hunt for answers and the prime suspect will survive the 'light of day'. A powerful thriller that steeps a narrative in the usual dark aspects. Nesbø fans will devour this piece and there are sure to be new fans coming out of the woodwork.
I have long been a fan of the European mystery and thriller genres, specifically those which emerge from the Scandinavian countries. I find that they are not only better crafted, but offer the reader a richer sense of the narrative while filled with dark twists. Nesbø has proven that he not only has a handle on the genre, but that he is able to push his protagonist well past the point of no return. As Harry struggles, the reader follows suit, wishing for some happy outcome, only to be led away from the easy solution. Nesbø tells a dark story, tapping into the still-buzzworthy 'vampire' theme, but does not inject that Hollywood flavour, choosing instead to flirt with the obsessive dark side of bloodlust and all things 'haemo'. While the reader synthesises this, Nesbø pushes past storylines into the present piece and forces the reader to balance multiple tasks. Rich in its character development as well, the reader draws close to some individuals who grace the page, while hoping others will meet their match. I remain in awe of the high calibre of the writing, especially as the story has been translated into English. I have often commented that if the piece can hold strong after it has been linguistically altered, imagine the force behind the original Norwegian presentation.
Kudos, Mr. Nesbø for another impressive novel. I have a die-hard fan and you are still able to push me in directions I could not have seen coming.

If you are a fan of books you can finish in a day or two, you wouldn’t like The Thirst or any other Jo Nesbø book. But if you, like me, love to be in a long-term relationship with a book without being bored to death, aka sit your ass down, grab a cuppa and let the book take you deep inside the minds of the characters, then you are in for a treat.
Is there a vampire lurking in the streets of Oslo or just a sick serial killer with a thirst for blood? The unique Harry Hole is back in yet another gripping and gruesome story.

Its been jus over THREE years since the last Harry Hole novel..... really....?? WOW!!! No wonder I struggled a bit with the names early doors.......
A lot of tension from the get-go as you realise/anticipate murders (a la horror film style) are coming but not sure whose “gonna get it� & thats the instant hook with The Thirst. I love Nesbo’s writing, he works the characters in very well around the MC Hole to the point where you are rooting for others now as well as Harry who ive enjoyed from the early days with this series (one of my favs) which has been a rollercoaster as his personnel/professional life twists & turns...... every book you pick up of the series.... you wonder will it be a sober or alcoholic Harry we will encounter?
As to the story it’s multi-layered (as usual) and pulls you the reader ever forward & being a teccie novel I shall give no clues for this Nordic Noir......
As to the feel of the book..... well again I don’t want to give too much away but have to say I’ve come away with the overwhelming sense (which started in Police) that this is defo a different Harry Hole than the earlier books, to the point that at times I felt a diffo author to Jo Nesbo was writing the part. I still liked it for sure but I feel a little subdued after the endings if I’m trying to find a word to sum it all up.....?
As for a score, 3.5 rounded down to a three (as my standards are high with Harry Hole)
As always I’ll say if you’ve never read Harry Hole I recommend you go dig out book 3 in the series (the first book translated) & start from there with which is a cracking yarn.

Περίπου τρία χρόνια μετά την «Αστυνομία», ο Jo Nesbo επιστρέφει με την ενδέκατη περιπέτεια του αγαπημένου και θρυλικού ήρωα Χάρι Χόλε, τη «Δίψα», που ουσιαστικά αποτελεί τη συνέχειά της.
Φαινομενικά τα πάντα μοιάζουν να έχουν αλλάξει στις ζωές των κεντρικών ηρώων. Ο Χάρι έχει αφήσει πίσω του την καριέρα του επιθεωρητή, είναι πλέον καθηγητής της Αστυνομικής Ακαδημίας και παντρεμένος με τη Ράκελ. Ζει μια ζωή με νορμάλ ρυθμούς, νιώθει πως επιτέλους ανήκει κάπου και πως όλος ο κόσμος του βρίσκεται μέσα στα μάτια της γυναίκας του. Οι παλιοί του συνάδελφοι έχουν επίσης προχωρήσει με τις δικές τους ζωές και συνεχίζουν να κυνηγούν καθημερινά το έγκλημα στους δρόμους του Όσλο.
Μέχρι που μια δολοφονία έρχεται να αναταράξει την επιφανειακή ηρεμία όλων και να αλλάξει τα δεδομένα. Μια γυναίκα, χρήστρια της δημοφιλούς εφαρμογής γνωριμιών Tinder, βρίσκεται νεκρή μέσα στο διαμέρισμά της. Η ταυτότητά της και η δολοφονική μανία του δράστη σημαίνουν συναγερμό στην αστυνομία. Όλα δείχνουν πως η επιστροφή του Χάρι στην ενεργό δράση είναι κάτι παραπάνω από απαραίτητη. Εκείνος αρχικά μοιάζει απρόθυμος, φοβούμενος πως αν αφήσει την ήσυχη ρουτίνα του, θα ενεργοποιήσει μια σειρά καταστάσεων που ίσως αργότερα δεν καταφέρει να ελέγξει.
Τελικά όμως φαίνεται πως, ουσιαστικά, τίποτα δεν έχει αλλάξει. Όταν ο Χάρι δέχεται να συνεργαστεί με την αστυνομία συνειδητοποιεί πως πιθανότατα έχει έρθει η ώρα να αντιμετωπίσει τον μοναδικό δολοφόνο που δεν κατάφερε ποτέ να συλλάβει. Και τότε ξυπνάει μέσα του το καλά κρυμμένο ως τότε πάθος για κυνήγι· ένα πάθος που ποτέ δεν κατάφερε να καταλαγιάσει εντελώς, και που εκείνος αρχικά προσπαθεί να αντιπαλέψει και τελικά αποδέχεται, παρόλο που γνωρίζει καλά πως μπορεί να τον καταστρέψει. Γιατί η δίψα του δολοφόνου έχει κατορθώσει να ξυπνήσει και τη δίψα του Χάρι· κι αυτή τη φορά μονάχα ένας από τους δύο θα καταφέρει να επιβιώσει...
Ο Jo Nesbo είχε αναφέρει σε αρκετές συνεντεύξεις του πως δεν είχε κλείσει τους λογαριασμούς του με τον Χάρι Χόλε μετά το τέλος της «Αστυνομίας». Και το αποδεικνύει αυτό με τον καλύτερο τρόπο· με τη «Δίψα». Με αφορμή ένα σύγχρονο κοινωνικό φαινόμενο, τη γνωριμία μέσω κοινωνικών δικτύων με σκοπό την εύρεση συντρόφου, καταφέρνει να στήσει μια αληθινά καταπληκτική ιστορία. Μια ιστορία συναρπαστική, αγωνιώδη, καλοστημένη από την αρχή έως το τέλος. Μια πλοκή έξυπνη, ιδιοφυή, χορτάτη από κάθε άποψη, που έρχεται να καλύψει απόλυτα τα όποια κενά είχαν μείνει στον αναγνώστη, που αναρωτιόταν «μετά την ‘Αστυνομία� τι;»
Οι φανατικοί αναγνώστες και του Nesbo, και γενικότερα της σκανδιναβικής αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας, ανέμεναν με προφανή αγωνία και ασίγαστη� δίψα το νέο του βιβλίο, τη νέα περιπέτεια του Χάρι. Κανείς από αυτούς δεν περίμενε –προφανώς� κάτι λιγότερο απ� αυτό που μας έχει συνηθίσει ο συγγραφέας. Εξάλλου ο Nesbo έχει αποδείξει πως μπορεί να γίνει μονάχα καλύτερος. Ίσως όμως δεν περίμεναν όλοι μια ιστορία τόσο απόλυτα χορταστική, τόσο ικανοποιητικά γεμάτη δράση και γλαφυρές περιγραφές, με τέτοια πληθώρα συναισθημάτων και γρήγορη εναλλαγή σκηνικών και καταστάσεων. Το βιβλίο δεν κάνει καθόλου ‘κοιλιά�, δεν χάνει πουθενά τον ειρμό, δεν σταματάει να τρέφει την αναγνωστική αγωνία και την πείνα για περισσότερες εξελίξεις. Κάθε παράγραφος, κάθε σελίδα έχει ουσιαστικό λόγο ύπαρξης· δεν υπάρχει τίποτα περιττό, τίποτα εκτός τόπου και χρόνου μέσα στην πλοκή.
Ο Nesbo, πραγματικός μαέστρος στο να διατηρεί αμείωτη την ένταση των ιστοριών του, πραγματικά εδώ μεγαλούργησε. Είναι λες και σκέφτηκε ακριβώς όλα όσα θα ήθελαν να διαβάσουν οι αναγνώστες και τα συμπεριέλαβε στην πλοκή του. Ωριμότερος από ποτέ συγγραφικά, μοιάζει απόλυτα αποφασισμένος να εκπλήξει, να ταρακουνήσει, να ξεθεμελιώσει καθετί που ξέραμε και θεωρούσαμε δεδομένο ως τώρα. Στο Σύμπαν του Χάρι Χόλε, άλλωστε, τίποτα δεν είναι δεδομένο και τίποτα δεν κρατάει για πάντα. Το μόνο που μπορείς να κάνεις είναι να ζεις και να απολαμβάνεις το τώρα, αφού αυτό μπορεί να αλλάξει εντελώς ξαφνικά την αμέσως επόμενη στιγμή.
Και δεν υπάρχει καλύτερος σύντροφος σ� αυτό από τον ίδιο τον Χάρι· εξίσου ώριμος με τον δημιουργό του, έχει φτάσει πλέον σε ένα μεταίχμιο της ζωής του όπου θα πρέπει να αναθεωρήσει για μια ακόμα φορά τα κεκτημένα του, να αναζητήσει τα καλά κρυμμένα πάθη μέσα του και να προσπαθήσει, έστω, να τα χαλιναγωγήσει πριν τον καταπιούν. Ο Χάρι της «Δίψας» είναι ίσως η καλύτερη εκδοχή του εαυτού του· όχι απλά γιατί είναι επιτέλους ευτυχισμένος –όσ� ευτυχισμένος μπορεί να νιώσει ένας εσωστρεφής, καχύποπτος με τη ζωή και τη Μοίρα τύπος όπως αυτός� αλλά κυρίως γιατί, μέσα από έναν κυκεώνα αμφιβολιών και αμφίρροπων καταστάσεων, αποδεικνύεται πως είναι πλέον ικανός να αντιμετωπίσει ακόμα και τις δυσκολότερες καταστάσεις, γιατί έχει πια κάτι να ελπίζει και κάποιον να τον περιμένει όταν γυρίζει σπίτι. Έχει μια οικογένεια, ένα μέλλον. Που μπορεί να μοιάζει αβέβαιο, αλλά που αυτή τη φορά έχει λόγους να θέλει να το ζήσει. Γιατί μπορεί και γιατί του αξίζει.
Η «Δίψα» θα κάνει τους απανταχού ‘Nesbomaniacs� να νιώσουν πως γυρίζουν στο σπίτι τους μετά από πολύ καιρό, διαβάζοντάς τη. Πρόκειται για το αρτιότερο, το ωριμότερο, το πιο καλογραμμένο βιβλίο με ήρωα τον Χάρι Χόλε. Ένα βιβλίο που αξίζει μια θέση σε κάθε ράφι, μια όαση που χορταίνει την αναγνωστική Δίψα� μέχρι την επόμενη φορά!

Εκείνος αρχικά μοιάζει απρόθυμος, φοβούμενος πως αν αφήσει την ήσυχη ρουτίνα του, θα ενεργοποιήσει μια σειρά καταστάσεων που ίσως αργότερα δεν καταφέρει να ελέγξει.
Τελικά όμως φαίνεται πως, ουσιαστικά, τίποτα δεν έχει αλλάξει. Όταν ο Χάρι δέχεται να συνεργαστεί με την αστυνομία συνειδητοποιεί πως πιθανότατα έχει έρθει η ώρα να αντιμετωπίσει τον μοναδικό δολοφόνο που δεν κατάφερε ποτέ να συλλάβει. Και τότε ξυπνάει μέσα του το καλά κρυμμένο ως τότε πάθος για κυνήγι· ένα πάθος που ποτέ δεν κατάφερε να καταλαγιάσει εντελώς, και που εκείνος αρχικά προσπαθεί να αντιπαλέψει και τελικά αποδέχεται, παρόλο που γνωρίζει καλά πως μπορεί να τον καταστρέψει. Γιατί η δίψα του δολοφόνου έχει κατορθώσει να ξυπνήσει και τη δίψα του Χάρι· κι αυτή τη φορά μονάχα ένας από τους δύο θα καταφέρει να επιβιώσει...
Ο Jo Nesbo είχε αναφέρει σε αρκετές συνεντεύξεις του πως δεν είχε κλείσει τους λογαριασμούς του με τον Χάρι Χόλε μετά το τέλος της «Αστυνομίας». Και το αποδεικνύει αυτό με τον καλύτερο τρόπο· με τη «Δίψα». Με αφορμή ένα σύγχρονο κοινωνικό φαινόμενο, τη γνωριμία μέσω κοινωνικών δικτύων με σκοπό την εύρεση συντρόφου, καταφέρνει να στήσει μια αληθινά καταπληκτική ιστορία. Μια ιστορία συναρπαστική, αγωνιώδη, καλοστημένη από την αρχή έως το τέλος. Μια πλοκή έξυπνη, ιδιοφυή, χορτάτη από κάθε άποψη, που έρχεται να καλύψει απόλυτα τα όποια κενά είχαν μείνει στον αναγνώστη, που αναρωτιόταν «μετά την ‘Αστυνομία� τι;»
Οι φανατικοί αναγνώστες και του Nesbo, και γενικότερα της σκανδιναβικής αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας, ανέμεναν με προφανή αγωνία και ασίγαστη� δίψα το νέο του βιβλίο, τη νέα περιπέτεια του Χάρι. Κανείς από αυτούς δεν περίμενε –προφανώς� κάτι λιγότερο απ� αυτό που μας έχει συνηθίσει ο συγγραφέας. Εξάλλου ο Nesbo έχει αποδείξει πως μπορεί να γίνει μονάχα καλύτερος. Ίσως όμως δεν περίμεναν όλοι μια ιστορία τόσο απόλυτα χορταστική, τόσο ικανοποιητικά γεμάτη δράση και γλαφυρές περιγραφές, με τέτοια πληθώρα συναισθημάτων και γρήγορη εναλλαγή σκηνικών και καταστάσεων. Το βιβλίο δεν κάνει καθόλου ‘κοιλιά�, δεν χάνει πουθενά τον ειρμό, δεν σταματάει να τρέφει την αναγνωστική αγωνία και την πείνα για περισσότερες εξελίξεις. Κάθε παράγραφος, κάθε σελίδα έχει ουσιαστικό λόγο ύπαρξης· δεν υπάρχει τίποτα περιττό, τίποτα εκτός τόπου και χρόνου μέσα στην πλοκή.
Ο Nesbo, πραγματικός μαέστρος στο να διατηρεί αμείωτη την ένταση των ιστοριών του, πραγματικά εδώ μεγαλούργησε. Είναι λες και σκέφτηκε ακριβώς όλα όσα θα ήθελαν να διαβάσουν οι αναγνώστες και τα συμπεριέλαβε στην πλοκή του. Ωριμότερος από ποτέ συγγραφικά, μοιάζει απόλυτα αποφασισμένος να εκπλήξει, να ταρακουνήσει, να ξεθεμελιώσει καθετί που ξέραμε και θεωρούσαμε δεδομένο ως τώρα. Στο Σύμπαν του Χάρι Χόλε, άλλωστε, τίποτα δεν είναι δεδομένο και τίποτα δεν κρατάει για πάντα. Το μόνο που μπορείς να κάνεις είναι να ζεις και να απολαμβάνεις το τώρα, αφού αυτό μπορεί να αλλάξει εντελώς ξαφνικά την αμέσως επόμενη στιγμή.
Και δεν υπάρχει καλύτερος σύντροφος σ� αυτό από τον ίδιο τον Χάρι· εξίσου ώριμος με τον δημιουργό του, έχει φτάσει πλέον σε ένα μεταίχμιο της ζωής του όπου θα πρέπει να αναθεωρήσει για μια ακόμα φορά τα κεκτημένα του, να αναζητήσει τα καλά κρυμμένα πάθη μέσα του και να προσπαθήσει, έστω, να τα χαλιναγωγήσει πριν τον καταπιούν. Ο Χάρι της «Δίψας» είναι ίσως η καλύτερη εκδοχή του εαυτού του· όχι απλά γιατί είναι επιτέλους ευτυχισμένος –όσ� ευτυχισμένος μπορεί να νιώσει ένας εσωστρεφής, καχύποπτος με τη ζωή και τη Μοίρα τύπος όπως αυτός� αλλά κυρίως γιατί, μέσα από έναν κυκεώνα αμφιβολιών και αμφίρροπων καταστάσεων, αποδεικνύεται πως είναι πλέον ικανός να αντιμετωπίσει ακόμα και τις δυσκολότερες καταστάσεις, γιατί έχει πια κάτι να ελπίζει και κάποιον να τον περιμένει όταν γυρίζει σπίτι. Έχει μια οικογένεια, ένα μέλλον. Που μπορεί να μοιάζει αβέβαιο, αλλά που αυτή τη φορά έχει λόγους να θέλει να το ζήσει. Γιατί μπορεί και γιατί του αξίζει.
Η «Δίψα» θα κάνει τους απανταχού ‘Nesbomaniacs� να νιώσουν πως γυρίζουν στο σπίτι τους μετά από πολύ καιρό, διαβάζοντάς τη. Πρόκειται για το αρτιότερο, το ωριμότερο, το πιο καλογραμμένο βιβλίο με ήρωα τον Χάρι Χόλε. Ένα βιβλίο που αξίζει μια θέση σε κάθε ράφι, μια όαση που χορταίνει την αναγνωστική Δίψα� μέχρι την επόμενη φορά!

Ακόμα ένα πολύ καλό βιβλίο από τον Jo Nesbo.
Αν στο όνομα του συγγραφέα δεν έγγραφε Jo Nesbo, αλλά κάποιο άλλο, ίσως και να το βαθμολογούσα με πέντε αστέρια.
Απλά, ο ίδιος Nesbo, με τα προηγούμενα βιβλία του, έχει κάνει τους αναγνώστες του να είναι απαιτητικοί, να είναι ‘’ψιλιασμένοι’�, να έχουν τα ‘’μάτι� τους ανοιχτά’� στο διάβασμα να μην τους ξεφύγει καμία λεπτομέρεια, να υποψιάζονται τους πάντες και τα πάντα.
Οπότε μου έμεινε η αίσθηση ότι, ναι μεν μιλάμε για ένα πολύ καλό βιβλίο, ναι μεν διαβάζεται μονορούφι, αλλά δεν μπορώ να πω ότι ο Nesbo ξεπέρασε τον εαυτό του ή ότι είναι το καλύτερο του.
Ο Nesbo είναι από τους λίγους συγγραφείς που δεν με ανησυχεί όταν αγοράζω βιβλία του και είναι ‘’τούβλα’�, με πολλές σελίδες. Έχει φοβερή ικανότητα να παρασέρνει τον αναγνώστη να διαβάζει και άλλο � και άλλο � και να μην καταλαβαίνει πότε τελικά τελείωσε το βιβλίο. Έτσι και στην Δίψα. Για το πότε φεύγουν οι 664 σελίδες του, δεν καταλαβαίνεις καθόλου. Απλά αυτό το βιβλίο μου άφηνε σε μερικά σημεία την εντύπωση ότι περνούσαν οι σελίδες χωρίς να συμβαίνει κάτι το τρομερά συγκλονιστικό ή το τρομερά ανατρεπτικό (είπαμε ο συγγραφέας μας έχει κάνει απαιτητικούς αναγνώστες).
Και σε αυτό το βιβλίο έχουμε κάποιες κλασικές συνταγές Nesbo. Η αστυνομία αναγκάζεται να καλέσει (για άλλη μία φορά ) τον Χόλε για να τους βοηθήσει σε μια υπόθεση serial killer. (Μια ένσταση που έχω σε αυτό το βιβλίο είναι ότι θεωρώ πως ο χρόνος που κάλεσαν τον Χόλε είναι πάρα πολύ νωρίς- μόλις μετά την πρώτη δολοφονία- και τα ‘’αντίποινα’� με τα οποία τον απείλησαν , εάν δεν συνεργαστεί- γιατί εν τω μεταξύ ο άνθρωπος ζει μια ευτυχισμένη οικογενειακή ζωή- δεν με έπεισαν). Ο Χόλε ηγείται μίας ανεξάρτητης ομάδας η οποία δουλεύει παράλληλα με την κανονική ομάδα της αστυνομίας. Και σε αυτό το βιβλίο έχουμε ανατροπές , αφήνει υπόνοιες για πολλά πρόσωπα , ώστε ουσιαστικά ο αναγνώστης να έχει πολλούς ύποπτους και στο τέλος μια υπόθεση πιο πολύπλοκη από ότι φαινόταν. Έχουμε πρόσωπα από τα προηγούμενα βιβλία του. Χωρίς να αποτελεί συνέχεια της Αστυνομίας , ένα από τα κεντρικά πρόσωπα της Δίψας, είχε αρκετά πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο και στην Αστυνομία, στο τέλος της οποίας, ουσιαστικά και φαινόταν ότι θα ακολουθήσει και επόμενο μυθιστόρημα. Με περίπου παρόμοιο τρόπο τελειώνει και η Δίψα, αφήνοντας ορθάνοικτο το ενδεχόμενο για επόμενο βιβλίο.
Σε αυτό το σημείο να πω, για όποιον αποφασίσει να ξεκινήσει πρώτα από την Αστυνομία (για να φτάσει στην Δίψα), ότι η Αστυνομία δεν είναι αυτόνομο βιβλίο, αλλά ουσιαστικά είναι το δεύτερο μέρος του Φαντομά. Η Δίψα μου άφησε την εντύπωση ότι μπορεί να διαβαστεί και αυτόνομα, με τις επεξηγήσεις που αναφέρει το βιβλίο, για τα γεγονότα του παρελθόντος.
Τέλος να αναφέρω και την φοβερή προώθηση που έκαναν οι εκ��όσεις Μεταίχμιο, εδώ και μήνες πριν την έκδοση του, τις διάφορες παρουσιάσεις και τα αναμνηστικά δωράκια. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι και εγώ το αγόρασα την πρώτη μέρα της κυκλοφορίας του, αλλά και ότι όλο αυτό το κλίμα ανέβασε τις προσδοκίες, αλλά και τις απαιτήσεις μου. Και τελικά κατάλαβα ότι όλο αυτό δεν ήταν το καλύτερο για το βιβλίο (για μένα προσωπικά μιλάω), μιας και περίμενα ένα μυθιστόρημα που θα υπερκαλύψει τα προηγούμενα, πράγμα που δεν έγινε, άσχετα που τελικώς μιλάμε για ένα πολύ καλό βιβλίο.

كان مصاصاُ للدماء ، لذا كان الأمر وحشياً ومُرعباً جداً...
في كل مرة كنت أتجول في مسرح الجريمة اغمض عيني لكي لا أرى ما كانت عليه الضحية...ولكن لم يتوقف في أي مرة ذاك الشعور بأن ثمة شيء متوارٍ يُلقي بظل شبحي على المكان...، كما لو كان هناك تنهيدة قطرة ماء فى حوض فارغ...، المحقق " هاري " هو من رسخ لديّ ذلك...وأصبحت مترقبة كل لحظة ، أضع يدي على فمي لأقطع شهقة مكتومة أمام الضربات المرتدة التي كانت تباغتني ، عدد من المنعطفات والالتواءات التي تخذل كل تنبؤاتك وتغرقك في المزيد من الاحتمالات...
هل يمكن القبض على هذا القاتل ؟
علينا أن نطرح السؤال لماذا فعل ؟ عندئذٍ تتساقط عن اللوحة قطعة...قطعة...لتنكشف لك حقيقة الصورة التى تُخفيها....
العطش...لم يكن تعطش القاتل للدماء فحسب ، بل تعطش المحقق للقبض على المجرم الذي انفلت من قبضته منذ سنوات...
ألم يكن المحقق مدفوعاُ بتحقيق العدالة ؟
بلى...ولكن غريزة الشرطي الأسطوري في جرائم القتل المتسلسل كانت هى الدافع الأساسي...ينقاد وراء بادرة الشك الذي طالما كانت تستولي عليه بعد القبض على القاتل ...
فهو لا ينتظره الفراغ كما تظن ، بل حالة من الامتلاء بالارتياب الباهت ، وما ان يتحرك المحقق حتى يصبح يقيناً جلياً....
هنا كانت طبيعة شيطانية لأنفس غير سوية ، ترى من يتعطش للدماء ، أو للاستيلاء على مكانة تحقيقاً لمطامعه الشرهة...وهناك من يفنى حياته من أجل إنقاذ الأرواح....
التحليلات النفسية لدوافع القاتل المتسلسل وخاصة مصاص الدماء ، ورصد التفاصيل الدقيقة لمسرح الجريمة كانت مذهلة ومثيرة....
والنهاية صادمة وبعيدة تماماً عن توقعاتك....
وأخيراً ...لطالما كنت مُعجبة بذكاء المحقق " هاري " ، وكم وددت لو أصبح يوماً في فريقه...، ولكنني اتساءل كيف يذعن للسقوط فى اللحظة التي يترقب فيها منه أن يفعل شيئاً ما...؟!!!....
لا بأس فلابد من السقوط من أجل النهوض..اليس كذلك ؟
لماذا يصل كل شيء إلى حقيقته الكاملة فقط عندما نكاد نفقده ؟.....

Creo que la vara ha quedado demasiado alta después de leer diez libros seguidos de la saga Harry Hole, y luego de estar acostumbrado al estilo de escribir de Nesbo, debo decir que este libro me decepcionó un poco, teniendo en cuenta que no es un mal libro para nada, pero no creo que esté al nivel de los anteriores. No creo que sea el peor, pero sí no el mejor.
Otro libro largo, de más de 600 páginas. Debo decir que no me aburrió, pero la primera mitad del libro no me atrapó tanto como otras entregas. Tengo la sensación que Nesbo enredó la historia un poco más de lo necesario, sobre todo con los "Plot twists". Está bien que los haya, pero cuando ya se repite demasiado en el mismo libro ya no es tan atractivo. Demasiados cambios para aquí y para allá como que marea un poco.
Por otro lado, la última parte estuvo genial. Nesbo realmente sabe como escribir un final y dejarte atrapado, a pesar que todo lo anterior estuvo bastante mediocre (Para ser Nesbo). Noté bastante que estábamos en la parte final y más importante porque todo mejoró notablemente.
En cuanto a los personajes; Harry Hole no cambia. Es como un súperman borracho. Le soluciona el problema a todos y es el héroe incansable. En cuanto a "Smith" fue una buena aparición, pero creo que Nesbo abusó un poco de los plot twists, sobre todo con él.
En cuanto a la historia en sí, me hizo mucho ruido que todo fuera basado en vampiros.... ¿En serio? Ya tenemos suficiente material de vampiros que es horrible, con excepción del gran y real Drácula de Stoker. Dejen a los vampiros tranquilos, que empeoran la historia cuando se convierten en protagonista de algo!
En fin, sé que no escribí tanto porque no tengo mucho que decir de este libro. Ahora a leer la próxima parte.

Está bien que los haya, pero cuando ya se repite demasiado en el mismo libro ya no es tan atractivo. Demasiados cambios para aquí y para allá como que marea un poco.
Por otro lado, la última parte estuvo genial. Nesbo realmente sabe como escribir un final y dejarte atrapado, a pesar que todo lo anterior estuvo bastante mediocre (Para ser Nesbo). Noté bastante que estábamos en la parte final y más importante porque todo mejoró notablemente.
En cuanto a los personajes; Harry Hole no cambia. Es como un súperman borracho. Le soluciona el problema a todos y es el héroe incansable. En cuanto a "Smith" fue una buena aparición, pero creo que Nesbo abusó un poco de los plot twists, sobre todo con él.
En cuanto a la historia en sí, me hizo mucho ruido que todo fuera basado en vampiros.... ¿En serio? Ya tenemos suficiente material de vampiros que es horrible, con excepción del gran y real Drácula de Stoker. Dejen a los vampiros tranquilos, que empeoran la historia cuando se convierten en protagonista de algo!
En fin, sé que no escribí tanto porque no tengo mucho que decir de este libro. Ahora a leer la próxima parte.

Mε διαφορά το πιο αιματοβαμμένο βιβλίο του Νesbo και κατ� εμέ το πιο τρομακτικό. Τα αντανακλαστικά του αγαπημένου μας Χάρι Χόλε ενεργοποιούνται όταν το νεκρό κορμί της Ελίζε Χέρμανσεν βρίσκεται στραγγισμένο από αίμα. Εν αντιθέσει με τα προηγούμενα μυθιστορήματα είχα την αίσθηση πως ο δολοφόνος ήταν πλησίον μου, έτοιμος να μπήξει τα δόντια του στις παλλόμενες φλέβες του λαιμουδάκου. Όντας νυχτερινή αναγνώστρια είχα τρομοκρατηθεί και φοβόμουν μέχρι και την επιδρομή στο ψυγείο για νυχτερινό σνακ.
Που να χρησιμοποιούσα και το Tinder! Ηθικό δίδαγμα: Ου εγκαταστήσεις την εφαρμογή Tinder! Κινδυνεύεις να σε δαγκάσουν μέχρι θανάτου.
Ο Χαρούλης μας πάλι βασανίζεται από τους προσωπικούς του δαίμονες καθώς προσπαθεί να διαλευκάνει την υπόθεση. Στο πλευρό του η αγαπημένη Κατρίνε που είναι καυστική όπως πάντα. Υποψιάστηκα νωρίς την έκβαση της ιστορίας που αφενός με χαροποίησε, αφετέρου με έκανε να χάσω σταδιακά το ενδιαφέρον μου γιατί δεν αναρωτιόμουν. Αυτή τη φορά είχα laser focus και δεν αποπροσανατολίστηκα τόσο εύκολα.
Γενικά πλέον έχω καταλήξει στο συμπέρασμα πως ο δολοφόνος θα έχει κάνει εμφάνιση στις πρώτες 150 σελίδες. Θαρρώ πως το πρώτο μισό του βιβλίου ήταν πιο αγωνιώδες γιατί ο δολοφόνος ήταν σε έξαρση. Η δίψα του ήταν σαν τη φωτιά και μέχρι να σβηστεί καταβρόχθιζε τα πάντα στο διάβα της.
Το βιβλίο τελειώνει αινιγματικά με έναν παλιό δολοφόνο να επιστρέφει στην ενεργό δράση. Έχοντας πλέον μία ολοκληρωμένη εικόνα από την σειρά Χάρι Χόλε ο "Χιονάνθρωπος" παραμένει το αγαπημένο μου, ακολουθούν η "Αστυνομία" και μετά η "Νέμεσις" . Κύριε Νέσμπο, μην αργήσετε να κυκλοφορήσετε το επόμενο βιβλίο.

This is the 11th offering in Nesbo’s popular Norway Noir series featuring the flawed detective Harry Hole. Harry is less of a ‘mess� than he usually is. He is now married to Rakel and staying away from alcohol. Could he possibly be dealing with something as foreign as happiness? Hah—not for long. A serial killer needs to be caught and the corrupt Chief of Police, Mikael Bellman, is black-mailing him to take the case.
The killer appears to be a ‘vampirist� using metal teeth and ever more horrific means of murder with each death. [The body count IS a bit excessive!] The reader learns entirely too much about blood—quantity/weight in the human body, what it tastes like, how the iron it contains can be poisonous, and on-and-on. Yuck! Nesbo also utilizes two psychologist characters to explore the inner motivations of such a criminally insane perpetrator. Indeed, he devotes a considerable portion of the narrative on psychological discussions.
Nesbo’s twisted plot does not disappoint. And followers of the series will be reacquainted with his many complex characters. Despite the brutal violence that Nesbo exposes the reader to, this is more a story about ambition and the darkness of soul it can lead to. Recommend.

După volum anterior așteptam ceva mai mult de la continuare. Mi-a plăcut noul Harry mai liniștit și concentrat pe realitate. Volumul mi s-a părut concentrat mai mult pe relația dintre personaje decât pe anchetă, iar după descoperirea criminalului tot ce a urmat a fost parcă prea complicat, aș fi preferat un altfel de final.

Книгата ми беше досадна до към средата, след това нещата се пооправиха, но пък взе че остана с отворен край. Реално - към 3,5*.
Относително рано разгадах криминалната загадка, но отново това не ми попречи да дочета с удоволствие текста, за да науча мотивите и как точно се е случило всичко. :)
Остава ми да прочета последната част излязла до сега и ще си отдъхна заслужено от Осло, Хуле и Несбьо!

I’m a Nesbomaniac! Κατά συνέπεια, δεν είμαι και τόσο αντικειμενικό. Λατρεύω τον cult ντετέκτιβ (δεν έχω ιδέα τι είναι ο cult ντετέκτιβ, αλλά αφού τόσοι χρησιμοποιούν τον όρο στην αστυνομική λογοτεχνία, γιατί να μην τον χρησιμοποιήσω κι εγώ;) Χάρι Χόλε.
Η επιστροφή του Χάρι δεν μπορούσε παρά να είναι δυναμική. Ο Χάρι υποτίθεται πως πλέον είναι ένας ευυπόληπτος οικογενειάρχης (οι ήδη φαν γνωρίζουμε πως παντρεύτηκε τη Ράκελ), κι ένας απλός καθηγητής στην Αστυνομική Ακαδημία του Όσλο. Όμως� αν έχεις την πετριά� ό,τι κι αν κάνεις, με την πετριά μένεις�
Εμφανίζεται έναw κατά συρροήν δολοφόνος και σκοτώνει γυναίκες� Κι όχι έτσι απλά της σκοτώνει� τους ρουφάει το αίμα� (όχι όπως μας ρουφάει εμάς το αίμα η εφορία, αλλά κανονικά) με μια σιδερομασέλα (μπρρρ�) Κι εκείνες πεθαίνουν από ακατάσχετη αιμορραγία. Κι ο Χάρι επανέρχεται στην ενεργό δράση κι ας μην θέλει (καλά τραβάτε με κι ας κλαίω�)
Και παρέα με όλους αυτούς τους φόνους, να τρέχουν και τα προσωπικά του. Η Ράκελ πέφτει σε κώμα κι ο Όλεγκ (ο γιος της Ράκελ) τα βάζει με τον Χάρι. Κι οι σκοτωμοί συνεχίζονται� και� και�
Ο ρυθμός καταιγιστικός, όπως μας έχει συνηθίσει ο Nesbo. Γνώριμα πρόσωπα από παλιά ο Τρουλς, ο Μίκαελ, η Ούλα� Νέα πρόσωπα όπως ο γιατρός Στέφενς και ο ψυχολόγος Σμιτ� Κι ο Νέσμπο συνεχώς προσθέτει πρόσωπα κι άλλα πρόσωπα που ώρες � ώρες χάνεις το λογαριασμό κι ενώ σε κάποιον άλλο συγγραφέα μπορεί να έλεγες ‘κούλαρ� λιγάκι�, εδώ ok, it’s just Nesbo.
Αυτό που μου αρέσει στο Nesbo πέρα από την γρήγορη και ενίοτε χαοτική πλοκή (κάπως έτσι φαντάζομαι πρέπει να είναι και το μυαλό του εν λόγω συγγραφέα), είναι η κριτική που κάνει στη νορβηγική κοινωνία, μια κριτική ανεπαίσθητη αλλά καίρια που την βλέπει όποιος θέλει να την δει: μιλάει για τη νεολαία, για τα ΜΜΕ, για τις εξωσυζυγικές σχέσεις, για το εκπαιδευτικό της σύστημα, για τη διαφθορά�
Να προσθέσω πως είναι ένα βιβλίο γεμάτο μουσική� Πολύ συχνά αναφέρονται κομμάτια και συγκροτήματα, μουσική όμως άγρια, πανκ, χαρντ ροκ και ολίγον τζαζ, ωμή όπως ωμές είναι και οι περιγραφές του βιβλίου. Αποτελούν την τέλεια μουσική υπόκρουση καθώς το διαβάζετε, αλλά δεν εγγυώμαι για την ψυχολογική σας ισορροπία μετά (εγώ πάντως αισθανόμουν πως έμπαινε ο βαμπιριστής μες στη φωλιά μου και ρούφαγε το αίμα μου και ζάρωνε το πουκάμισο μου κι adios σκορόφιδο για πάντα�) Να, οι παλμοί, να οι λιποθυμίες, να οι panic attacks, να οι αϋπνίες, να όλα�
Και φτάνοντας στο τέλος� τελικά συγγραφέας και αναγνώστης, δεν μπορούν να κρύψουν την ηλικία τους� Ο Νέσμπο αναφέρει νοσταλγικά το βιβλίο «το ζεν και η τέχνη της συντήρησης της μοτοσυκλέτας» του Ρόμπερτ Πίρσιγκ, ένα από τα ευαγγέλια της μπίτνικ γενιάς μας� ή μήπως η γενιά μας δεν ήταν τελικά μπίτνικ;;;
Βαθμολογία: 10/10 (γιατί νιώθω αδελφή ψυχή με τον Χάρι Χόλε και θα ήθελα πολύ να πίναμε και ένα και δύο και τρία και τέσσερα Jim Beam στο νεοαποκτηθέν μπαρ του και να γίνουμε λιώμα � άντε καλά μετά θα μου έκανε κι έναν τούρκικο καφέ για να στανιάρω�)

Λόγω πολύ έντονου φόρτου στη δουλειά, θεωρούσα ότι δεν μπορώ να διαβάσω ένα βιβλίο που θα απαιτούσε έντονη πνευματική επένδυση, οπότε αντ' αυτού αποφάσισα να πιάσω ένα page-turner που δε θες να κοιμηθείς μέχρι να το τελειώσεις και να ανακαλύψεις το δολοφόνο παρότι είσαι ένα όρθιο πτώμα από τις 9μισι το βράδυ. ΕΞΑΙΡΕΤΙΚΗ ΙΔΕΑ.
Μου αρέσουν τα τίμια βιβλία. Αυτά που δεν παίρνουν πολύ στα σοβαρά τον εαυτό τους (οι συγγραφείς τους δηλαδή) και σου δίνουν αυτό που περιμένεις να πάρεις από αυτά. Εν προκειμένω, μια δυνατή αστυνομική ιστορία με ανατροπές, δράση, κινηματογραφική αφήγηση και αγωνία από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος. Τα βιβλία που δε σε απογοητεύουν. Και θεωρώ ότι τούτο δω είναι ένα τέτοιο βιβλίο.
Δεν είχα ξαναδιαβάσει Νεσμπο, οπότε το ότι ξεκίνησα με το τελευταίο της σειράς Χάρι Χολε ήταν άλλη μια πολυ αμφισβήτηση ιδέα. Μου άρεσε όμως και θέλω να διαβάσω και άλλα. Κάποιες ενδιάμεσες μικρές ανατροπές ήταν κάπως αναμενόμενες, αλλά δε θεωρώ ότι αυτό είναι στα μείον του βιβλίου. Η γραφή είναι καλή, ο ρυθμος γρήγορος, δε σε αφήνει να το πολυσκεφτείς, απλά σε ρουφά μέχρι την τελική πράξη της αποκάλυψης. Στο τέλος μια φορά κατάφερε να με μπερδέψει κι αυτό για εμένα είναι το πιο σημαντικό!

'The Thirst', Jo Nesbo's latest Harry Hole mystery, is a bit of a departure in that Harry has become a much more domesticated, and therefore less interesting, lead character. He retired from the force and has seemingly entered into legendary status among most (not all) of the current crop of crime fighters. When a series of particularly bloody murders occurs, Harry is called back into action.
The plot is on the sensational side. A 'vampirist' seems to be ravaging Oslo and murdering (and draining blood) with increasing frequency. There are very few clues, but Harry puts together a team and begins to make progress, despite political issues that continue to surface. In due time the mystery is solved and the bad guy is dispatched, but is it the real killer? Well, when that happens there's still a third of the book to go, so one would assume not.....
The plot is somewhat believable, but the conclusion and some of the action leading up to it are a bit out there. Many twists in the final section of the book are telegraphed through previous action, but as is the case in other HH novels Harry seems to pull together clues on his own and springs them on the reader (and other characters) in grandiose fashion. I have a bit of a problem with this technique since it reduces the reader to just, well, reading, instead of thinking along with the detective while he's trying to make sense of the puzzle.
This is the first novel in the HH series I didn't totally race through. The topic of the vampire murders was interesting enough but the writing was very pedestrian (I realize it was a translation), the plot twists were telegraphed, and the ending was contrived. The sober Harry just wasn't as interesting as the guy who was legendary in his depravity.

Ο Βασιλιάς επέστρεψε...και είναι καλύτερος από ποτέ!
Οσοι έχουν παρακολουθήσει τον Nesbø, ξέρουν ότι από βιβλίο σε βιβλίο η γραφή του ωριμάζει και γίνεται όλο και καλύτερος...Κι εκεί που νομίζεις ότι στην Αστυνομία έχει φτάσει κορυφή, επιστρέφει τρία χρόνια μετά να σε διαψεύσει! Ναι, στην Δίψα ο Nesbø ξεπέρασε τον εαυτό του για άλλη μια φορά!
Αριστουργηματικά δομημένη πλοκή, που δεν "μπάζει" από πουθενά...σου λύνει οποιαδήποτε απορία, ακόμη και αυτήν που σίγουρα σου είχε μείνει από την Αστυνομία σχετικά με έναν συγκεκριμένο χαρακτήρα! Ναι, ο Nesbø δεν αφήνει τίποτα στην τύχη, κάθε χαρακτήρας, κάθε λέξη που συναντάς, υπάρχει για να εξυπηρετήσει κάποιον σκοπό!
Παρόλο που τον δολοφόνο τον ξέρουμε (;) από την αρχή, η αγωνία χτυπάει κόκκινο συνεχώς, και δεν σε αφήνει να χαλαρώσεις ούτε στιγμή, ...γιατί στον κόσμο του Χάρι Χόλε, τίποτα δεν είναι αυτό που φαίνεται! Ο Nesbø σε κάνει να υποπτεύεσαι τους πάντες μέχρι λίγο πριν το τέλος, παρόλο που αν είσαι αρκετά προσεκτικός, σου δίνει ένα στοιχείο ώστε να καταλήξεις στον πραγματικό ένοχο της υπόθεσης.
Εξαιρετικοί χαρακτήρες, με όλες τις ανθρώπινες αδυναμίες τους, και πιο ώριμοι από ποτέ!
Το διάβασα σε χρόνο ρεκόρ (για τα δικά μου δεδομένα), κάτι που είχε να μου συμβεί πάρα πολύ καιρό.
Βαθμολογία: 10/10 (και ΝΑΙ, ΑΓΑΠΩ NESBØ!)
Οσοι έχουν παρακολουθήσει τον Nesbø, ξέρουν ότι από βιβλίο σε βιβλίο η γραφή του ωριμάζει και γίνεται όλο και καλύτερος...Κι εκεί που νομίζεις ότι στην Αστυνομία έχει φτάσει κορυφή, επιστρέφει τρία χρόνια μετά να σε διαψεύσει! Ναι, στην Δίψα ο Nesbø ξεπέρασε τον εαυτό του για άλλη μια φορά!
Αριστουργηματικά δομημένη πλοκή, που δεν "μπάζει" από πουθενά...σου λύνει οποιαδήποτε απορία, ακόμη και αυτήν που σίγουρα σου είχε μείνει από την Αστυνομία σχετικά με έναν συγκεκριμένο χαρακτήρα!
