Came at a good time in my life- just what I needed to reinvigorate myself after a couple of weeks of being in an existential rut. Perfect for New Years. This book has a lot of great ideas on how to give meaning to life. If nothing else it sheds light on why one can be miserable despite living a life of relative privilege. It has two primary faults: (1) so much information! It feels like a primer, in that every chapter could have been its own book. It requires your full attention (which, I am now realizing, aligns pretty well with the book’s whole ~thing~). (2) you can tell this is not from the 2010s- some of the content needs updating. There’s a bit in there about how to improve your child’s life so they are not tempted to join a “motorcycle gang. (???)

I just couldn't get into the 'flow' of this book. It tells too many rambling stories and I found myself getting impatient and wishing I was reading something else. If I ever find it on audiobook for free I'll try it again but for now I'm abandoning it.

Interesting concept but I felt that for a lot of the second half of the book, Csikszentmihalyi was just writing for the sake of writing.

Once the idea of flow was introduced and what the steps were to reach that mindset, it started to become more of a chore to finish the book.

Originally written 30 years ago, this book didn't age well. The parts I enjoyed - snippits, really - weren't worth the hours of reading.

---------------
The book describes the logic of "Flow" in our lives so beautifully in its fiction. It is written in very fluent and clear language. It's nice to have examples from life. To enjoy our lives, to enjoy what we have to pay attention to. Why it's important to work in the job we love. You understand how life can be cruel to us when we work in a job we don't like. When you listen to the common characteristics of people who love their work, you understand the importance of doing the work that you love and that suits you better.

What a great book. What adventure is all about, not about big outdoors or adrenaline but about small steps, to remain deatached to goals and stay focused on the present moment. To find peace within chaos, to know yourself and stay true to your principles and to enjoy the process...

In depth about all things flow. I found there to be many disparate subjects that are actually related to flow. I love the ideas here and hope you do too.

Love the concept but I found it to be repetitive and slightly boring. As though I was reading a biology textbook

A must read book... very inspiring and motivating, however it is unnecessarily wordy. By the end of the book I found that I had trouble finishing it because i lost the reason to. Despite this, it was a very eye opening and its lessons on happiness is something I’ll never forget.

This should have been essay-length, but still definitely worth working through!

He talks about gamification decades before everything became gamified.

He talks about the destructive influence of social media, decades before Facebook was founded.

He talks about being present and motivated intrinsically a generation before we all became obsessed with mindfulness, dopamine detoxes and decluttering.

There is a mischievous rebellious streak running through the book - against the consumer society and the institutions which groom us to be mindless conforming drones.
