Ok, I wanted a nice easy fun book and this was exactly what I needed: a horror mystery-retelling of Gogol's Viy. The pace is very fast, action scenes are abundant. Mysteries are intriguing. The only thing is that I thought it was a bit too much by the end, I don't know if we needed villain's monologue and their motivation explained, cause it didn't work for me anyway. (What I mean is for a morally grey character to work you have to be invested in them and sympathise with them. But to do so you need more time spent with them to get to know them. And this story didn't invest in them at all and so by the end I'm thinking - the f I care why you did it.) And maybe I would've loved having a little breather time between the action in the end.(I would've loved the story to be slower and more atmospheric. The horror part would've greatly benefited from it. Btw Stephen King often good on ambiance as far as I remember.)
Anyways, fun fun fun! My friend says that Pavluk is Ukrainian Stephen King but I haven't read Steve in a while. For me it was Tim Burton's Sleepy hollow/Shutter Island Ukrainian-style. Hope I didn't spoil anything.
