I have read it in Turkish so i am going to review it in two language)) So, i've read Empaty first, and like Empaty , Improbable is one of the best sci-fiction books i have ever read! I love sci-fiction, i am glad that Improbable gave me a lot of action, sci-fiction and excitement)) It made me love math more, which i never loved, love physics much more)) Laplace's devil? Wooww! I have never thought about deja vu and odds and a lot of futures which are waiting to happen and only happen because of our desicions))) The plot was the best of this book: action, complexity of events and real, solid characters are brilliant! Don't want to spoil anything, just to say something about characters: David Caine: our lovely protagonist)) Very clever, talented man who tries to make a"a happy end" for everyone after his failure on his life)) He is kind hearted, but also knows how to make sinciere desicions)) I loved this character so much, even he has some flaws like being gambler)) Nava Vaner: Russian girl)) but unlike anyone else, she is a very talented spy))) Like everyone else in this book she also has some flaws but for the one AIM, she did her best! Even David Caine cannot make through without her)) Jasper Caine: David's twin)) He has Schizophrenia but he is as talented as his brother)) I liked him too)) Steven Grimes? hey, is he the one from Empaty? I am sure he is))) For not being spoiler i stop the review)) This book is Excellent!
Great science but the Byzantine plot is tough to follow!
David Caine, able to perform astonishingly complex mathematical calculations of probabilities and odds in his head, is a successful compulsive gambler. Playing on credit and beaten badly one night in a game of Texas Hold `Em by a lucky punter who pulled a Royal Flush on the River to trump his four bullets, Caine finds himself in debt to the Russian Mafia. When he suffers a massive grand mal temporal lobe epileptic seizure immediately after losing the hand, he finds himself in the last ditch position of accepting the offer of a dangerous and highly experimental drug treatment in an effort to regain control of his life. Now hostage to the drug regimen, he finds himself unable to flee the Russians and is pulled into the web of a CIA investigation of his doctor's dangerous and unethical experimental drug treatments on unknowing human subjects.
With the help of tough female rogue CIA agent Nava Vaner, Caine scrambles for his life and his sanity as side effects of the drugs give him visions and turn him in a real-life version of "Laplace's Demon" with the ability to tap into the collective unconscious, to see "everywhen", the universe of innumerable myriad outcomes of the world's actions - in short, to know past and present and to affect and predict the future. And there are factions that will do anything to capture Caine to tap into and exploit that power!
While the plot-line for IMPROBABLE can be fairly categorized as outstanding, Fawer's execution in this, his debut novel, falls prey to some typical first novel weaknesses. An overly large cast and excessively complicated plot twists will befuddle and frustrate all but the most attentive readers. Character development is a hit and miss affair, at best. Caine and his schizophrenic brother, Jasper, are fully fleshed out colourful protagonists with a credible, well-constructed set of fears, aspirations, flaws, emotions and strengths. On the other hand, Nava Vaner, comes across as weakly contrived and artificially inserted into the novel to serve as a mandatory female interest.
But then there's the science that, almost magically, Fawer has dropped effortlessly into the maelstrom of a high-speed thriller ... and, my goodness, here is where Fawer excels! Literate, painless, crystal clear lay explanations of a wealth of seemingly un-related topics - biochemistry, schizophrenia, statistics, quantum mechanics, probability theory, "Laplace's Demon", DeMoivre's Theorem, chaos, Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, Jungian philosophy, Schrodinger's Cat, the birthday paradox and more. And, as wild as this may seem, all of it is used to quite reasonably propel the plot forward. (If Fawer ever decides to write a popular science non-fiction book, I'll snap it up in a heartbeat!)
No doubt some readers will see IMPROBABLE as a five-star smash thriller. The plot confusion factor will almost certainly cause others to set it aside as a "did not finish". I'll call it three stars and anticipate that Fawer's next novel will reflect his deeper experience as a published author.
This is a book like that I would recommend everyone read. And while I got my copy from the local library, as its one I'll be rereading, I have to buy a copy.
Can't say i liked the story nor the character progression/expression of this book but it caught me with its scientific tie-ins and imaginative point-outs.
This book would make a kick-ass action movie. As a novel though, for what it was, it was great, as the plot was quick-paced and the action was intense. What it lacked was in-depth character development, as the characters were a little one-dimensional; there was the flawed nice-guy protagonist, the tough sexy girl, the crazy brother, the bad ass with a heart... and their motives were obvious and expected. BUT, for this novel it was more about the science and the action than the character development, so it didn't really bring it down. I thought the idea behind the plot was pretty cool and the little explanations of the science for the layperson (eg. Leplace and probability theory) made it seem plausible, or should I say not Improbable, haha. Then again, I'm not a science person, so I can't attest to the reality of the science. Overall, the novel was entertaining and a fun summer read. Great for the beach!
her kesin teriflediyi bu kitab gozlentimi qarsilamadi.
belke de esas sebeb kitabi uzun fasilelerle oxumagim oldu ve bele olanda kitabdan qismen soyuyuram. amma diger terefden yazarla elaqedar idi mence. Adam Fawer-in movzulari her ne qeder maraqli olsa da, yazi terzi mene gore deyil, sanki. Empatini iller once oxuyub ( movzusu ela idi) ve sixildigim ucun yarida qoymusdum ( pdf idi). Duzdu, Olasiliksiz, Empati qeder sixici gelmedi, ancaq yene de darixdigim bir cox yer oldu. en sevdiyim yerleri ehtimallar uzerine edilen sohbetler idi
What a ride! The graphic nature of many of the descriptions had me scrunching up my face and puckering my lips but the themes and events in this book are fresh and frantic!
If you are a fan of science fiction or time travel, you'll probably enjoy Improbable.
AANRADER!
