What is the status of belief in God? Must a rational case be made or can such belief be properly basic? Is it possible to reconcile the concept of a good God with evil and suffering? In light of great differences among religions, can only one religion be true? The most comprehensive work of its kind, Reason and Religious Belief, now in its third edition, explores these and other perennial questions in the philosophy of religion. Drawing from the best in both classical and contemporary discussions, the authors examine religious experience, faith and reason, theistic arguments, the problem of evil, Reformed epistemology, miracles, and religious language. They also treat subjects not often included in competing texts, such as process theism, religious pluralism, religion and science, and the relationship between religion and morality. The third edition retains the engaging style and thorough coverage of previous editions and also takes into account the latest contributions in the field by such thinkers as Plantinga, Alston, Martin, Murphy, Dembski, M. Adams, and Swinburne. Integrating a variety of perspectives, it adds a chapter on the openness of God debate, several sections on feminist concerns, and frequent comparisons of how Eastern religions compare with Western theism. A sophisticated yet accessible introduction, Reason and Religious Belief, 3/e is ideally suited for use with the authors' companion anthology, Philosophy of Religion: Selected Readings, 2/e (OUP, 2000).
I am reviewing the 1991 edition which is NOT the latest edition of this book. The latest edition has a couple of new chapters and a few changes in the existing chapters, so if you are using this for school, go for the latest version.
I found this book needlessly complex and at times logically wrong. Also through most of the book it dumped all over Christianity. It occasionally touched on Judaism. (I am Jewish.) But when it did, it seemed to assume (or let the reader assume) that Judaism was mostly like Christianity.
I read this book in order to help my wife through her religious philosophy class. I have the current text, and I will read the additional chapters. So why did I read this one at all? It was available through as an eBook and I found that more convenient.
I will probably read through this book again looking for references, but as an actual textbook, it left much to be desired. Their writing style also took some getting used to. (Hey guys. It is not the 1950s anymore.) And I noticed that in places they shortened some of the quotes from philosophers they were featuring... and it often led to misunderstandings. I was able to read some of the original longer articles that the quotes came from, and while I didn't like the longer quotes any better, they were clearer.
this book is very thorough. its the best book for introducing philosophy religion course i found so far. however, i did find some parts hard to understand. i suppose itd harder for non philosophy students. overall still an excellent book. ive truly learned something new about religions. id recommend this to students who are studying philosophy or people who already have some philosophical knowledge about religious belief and wanting to find out more.
Another one read for class. Personally I had difficulty following this book. I felt as though the authors talked in circles many times and it was a bit frustrating. If you are curious about this subject, I suggest trying another book beforehand or get a good grasp on philosophy before picking this one up.
I appreciate the introduction and first chapter that I have perused. The authors are attempting to treat the material fairly. It appears to be an excellent intro to thinking about Christian religion; time will tell.
This rating is based solely on it's required use for school. We were assigned this one along with 'Philosophy of Religion' by the same author along with some other editors. I felt the latter was actually a much better resource overall. 'POR' (not this one) provides a series of essays by the proponents of the philosophy Peterson and others are presenting. This current selection seems to be a general synopsis of the essays they present in the latter book; therefore, the latter is more thorough and makes this one seem a bit redundant, even if it was printed first. In other words, I wish they would have assigned one or the other, but not both.
A comprehensive look at the philosophy of religion. This book is a must read for anyone who is new or old to the philosophy of religion. I found this book to be unbiased which is essential when writing about such a topic.
This is one of the best books on the philosophy of religion that I have read. It covers all the basics and clear manor. Not written from a Christian perspective but it shares information Christian scholars need to know.
For graduate natural theology course. Great introduction and examination of different ideas, issues, and questions related to the study of the philosophy of religion.
A great introduction into the world of Christian philosophy in a considerate and well articulated book. Reason & Religious Belief is easily understood by those without a philosophical background but still intellectually challenging in the way that it calls the reader to investigate the relationship between reason and faith. I strongly urge others to read this book as way to better relate to the world around us while still maintaining the integrity of Christianity.
