Born ( 袗薪褌芯薪 袩邪胁谢芯胁懈褔 效械褏芯胁 ) in the small southern seaport of Taganrog, the son of a grocer. His grandfather, a serf, bought his own freedom and that of his three sons in 1841. He also taught to read. A cloth merchant fathered Yevgenia Morozova, his mother.
"When I think back on my childhood," Chekhov recalled, "it all seems quite gloomy to me." Tyranny of his father, religious fanaticism, and long nights in the store, open from five in the morning till midnight, shadowed his early years. He attended a school for Greek boys in Taganrog from 1867 to 1868 and then Taganrog grammar school. Bankruptcy of his father compelled the family to move to Moscow. At the age of 16 years in 1876, independent Chekhov for some time alone in his native town supported through private tutoring.
In 1879, Chekhov left grammar school and entered the university medical school at Moscow. In the school, he began to publish hundreds of short comics to support his mother, sisters and brothers. Nicholas Leikin published him at this period and owned Oskolki (splinters), the journal of Saint Petersburg. His subjected silly social situations, marital problems, and farcical encounters among husbands, wives, mistresses, and lust; even after his marriage, Chekhov, the shy author, knew not much of whims of young women.
Nenunzhaya pobeda , first novel of Chekhov, set in 1882 in Hungary, parodied the novels of the popular M贸r J贸kai. People also mocked ideological optimism of J贸kai as a politician.
Chekhov graduated in 1884 and practiced medicine. He worked from 1885 in Peterburskaia gazeta.
In 1886, Chekhov met H.S. Suvorin, who invited him, a regular contributor, to work for Novoe vremya, the daily paper of Saint Petersburg. He gained a wide fame before 1886. He authored The Shooting Party , his second full-length novel, later translated into English. Agatha Christie used its characters and atmosphere in later her mystery novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd . First book of Chekhov in 1886 succeeded, and he gradually committed full time. The refusal of the author to join the ranks of social critics arose the wrath of liberal and radical intelligentsia, who criticized him for dealing with serious social and moral questions but avoiding giving answers. Such leaders as Leo Tolstoy and Nikolai Leskov, however, defended him. "I'm not a liberal, or a conservative, or a gradualist, or a monk, or an indifferentist. I should like to be a free artist and that's all..." Chekhov said in 1888.
The failure of The Wood Demon , play in 1889, and problems with novel made Chekhov to withdraw from literature for a period. In 1890, he traveled across Siberia to Sakhalin, remote prison island. He conducted a detailed census of ten thousand convicts and settlers, condemned to live on that harsh island. Chekhov expected to use the results of his research for his doctoral dissertation. Hard conditions on the island probably also weakened his own physical condition. From this journey came his famous travel book.
Chekhov practiced medicine until 1892. During these years, Chechov developed his concept of the dispassionate, non-judgmental author. He outlined his program in a letter to his brother Aleksandr: "1. Absence of lengthy verbiage of political-social-economic nature; 2. total objectivity; 3. truthful descriptions of persons and objects; 4. extreme brevity; 5. audacity and originality; flee the stereotype; 6. compassion." Because he objected that the paper conducted against Alfred Dreyfus, his friendship with Suvorin ended

Wow, there is a lot going on in this novella from Chekhov.
We have Leptev, a 30-ish wealthy man in love with a woman in her early 20s. She鈥檚 bored in her provincial town and wants to get out and away from her tyrannical father. So she marries Leptev and moves to Moscow. Within a month they both realize it鈥檚 a mistake. (This reminds me of Stoner, where I wrote in my review of that book 鈥溾€he most tragic lines in the book: 'Within a month he knew that his marriage was a failure; within a year he stopped hoping that it would improve.' 鈥�)
So how much can you cram into 100 pages? It鈥檚 never dull. I鈥檒l give you some of the events but put them in a spoiler.
The main themes are, as Leptev asks himself or others: does happiness exist? Maybe there are people who go through life never knowing happiness? Why is man never satisfied with what he has? And 鈥榩assionate love is a psychosis.鈥�
Chekhov gives us wonderfully descriptive scenes of Dickens-like characters, of landscape and towns and of psychological states. Here鈥檚 an example of the last:
鈥淭hey did not ask Leptev to go with them 鈥� he took it to mean that he bored them, that he was not wanted in the company of these gay young people. His disappointment and bitterness were so intense he almost wept, and he was positively glad that they were treating him so unkindly, so scornfully; he was glad that he was a stupid, dull husband, a moneybags; and it seemed to him that he would be more than glad if, this very night, his wife were to deceive him with his best friend, and afterwards, with a look of hatred, confess it to him... He was jealous of their student friends, of actors, singers, of Yartsev [his best friend], even of mere acquaintances; and now he passionately wished that she would actually be unfaithful to him; he wanted to find her in the arms of another man, to be outraged, once and for all to be set free from this nightmare.鈥�
A good story, great descriptive writing and psychological musings.

Three Years is an 1895 novella by Anton Chekhov originally published in the January and February 1895 issues of Russkaya Mysl.
At 130 pages it is Chekhov's second-longest narrative. The story takes a negative position on the progress of society, featuring individuals of the merchant and factory owner class and their workers, without offering political solutions.
Three Years is heartfelt attempt to create a "novel of Moscow life." In it, he paints a poignant portrait of the struggles and frustrations that go hand in hand with human relationships. Away from his native Moscow to care for his ailing sister, Laptev falls instantly in love with Yulia Sergeyevna, the daughter of the local doctor.
She in turn feels nothing for him, but convinces herself it would be doing him a gross disservice to refuse his proposal.
So begins the unequal marriage between the two, a marriage that will bring a bitter and desperate sorrow to them both.
Yet as the years go by, and as they face and overcome tragedy together, they learn to value each other in new ways, and so restore their faith in the redemptive power of time.
Most famous for The Cherry Orchard, Uncle Vanya, The Seagull, and Three Sisters, Anton Chekhov is one of Russia鈥檚 most highly regarded dramatists and short story writers.

Three Years is an 1895 novella by Anton Chekhov originally published in the January and February 1895 issues of Russkaya Mysl.
At 130 pages it is Chekhov's second-longest narrative. The story takes a negative position on the progress of society, featuring individuals of the merchant and factory owner class and their workers, without offering political solutions.
Three Years is heartfelt attempt to create a "novel of Moscow life." In it, he paints a poignant portrait of the struggles and frustrations that go hand in hand with human relationships. Away from his native Moscow to care for his ailing sister, Laptev falls instantly in love with Yulia Sergeyevna, the daughter of the local doctor.
She in turn feels nothing for him, but convinces herself it would be doing him a gross disservice to refuse his proposal.
So begins the unequal marriage between the two, a marriage that will bring a bitter and desperate sorrow to them both.
Yet as the years go by, and as they face and overcome tragedy together, they learn to value each other in new ways, and so restore their faith in the redemptive power of time.

The sensation you immerse into when reading Chekhov after Tolstoy is like pulling off a tight, but awfully tight bandana, from your head. I mean from my head, of course. By the by, exactly what I am applying during my work week, too. Specifically, when working from home, sometime midday I begin to feel the desire to wrap my head in a colorful bandana (*fortunately I have several) and after couple of hours I kind of unawares take it off and I begin to feel how divine grace is overflowing through my head and then softly cascading in all the rest of the body. Obviously, a sort of therapy :D and aftereffects are easily recognized...
As you well know, my dear and honoured bookish friend Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, died young, far too young but he wrote a goodly number of plays and stories where you can truly enjoy a delicate and unpretentious writing. From one of his letters (*that was a collection of them I read some time ago) I was amused to read him remark: 鈥淚 don鈥檛 well remember why I chose the medical faculty, but I never regretted that choice.鈥� It happens the same with me whenever I happen to read any work of his. By the by, I am not a physician myself, but I guess I would have been a good one :D His professional experiences were of immense service to him in analyzing the characters of various patients whom he treated, and I believe that his scientific training always helped him greatly in the writing of his stories and plays, which are all psychological studies.
He is a very fine conversationalist. Despite the terrible gloom of his stories, he had a distinct gift as a wit, and it is obvious that no one but a Russian would ever have conceived such characters, or reported such conversations.
For me, his stories are intellectual and subtle, and somehow appeal more to the mind, than to the passion or to any love of sensation. In many of them, same like in this one Three years , he deliberately avoids climaxes and all varieties of artificial effects. One of his chief characters (Alexei Laptev) suffers from an internal injury caused by a diseased will. And a disease obstinately remains a disease until it is cured, and sometimes it can be cured by hope or by protest. How they鈥檝e grown! he thought. And how many changes there鈥檝e been over these three years鈥ut I鈥檝e still got another thirteen, thirty years left to live鈥hat does the future hold for us all, I wonder? We鈥檒l just have to wait and see.
By the end of the novella all the characters undergo the needed or expected 鈥榬eformation鈥�. It鈥檚 funny but in a way I am reminded of a quote I read somewhere (don鈥檛 remember where anymore, sorry!) saying that Do not try to persuade other people to love you. Love, and you will be loved. Something of the sort happens here too or at least Chekhov gives us the right to believe so, though, being content with a mere diagnosis, by his story he doesn鈥檛 want to teach us anything!
I鈥檓 wondering if I should put back my bandana as I am to decide if I go next (*book-wise) back to Tolstoy or keep myself still grounded with Chekhov. Jesus, I need to have a shower, better! My head is itching :D

Why is it that I love Chekhov so much? I'm sure there are many reasons I could think of, as his works have many literary merits but what gets me the most is probably the highly successful portrayal of characters. To breathe life into a character, to make us peep into his or her soul, to me seems almost like a godly act. Isn't describing someone so perfectly and making us care so dearly an act of divine creation in itself? Is not an author a bit like God in that sense? Chekhov is a master of characterization, and this is evident both in his plays and in his prose works. Nothing seems as worthy of admiration of putting together a great cast of characters and a good story.
Three years is a novella that speaks of changes that can occur within three years. Besides being a study of Moscow life, this novella is a touching tale of married life. Aren't the best stories the stories about love? Well, this story opens with a protagonist named Laptev, a bachelor who while being away from Moscow to take care of his sick sister, suddenly falls in love with a young doctor's daughter Yulia. Yulia first refuses his offer, then upon second thought, she accepts it. Yulia feels nothing for Laptev, but it is wrong to think she marries him for money. It is not money, but marriage itself that motivates her. Yulia wants to get married, and she realizes that she will probably not find a suitor in her small town. Moscow attracts her, Yulia wants to see more of the world and the big city seems like a perfect place to do that. Moreover, Yulia can't find any flaws with her suitor.
There is a big age difference between them, that seems to alienate them even more. Many things seem to be against them, a lack of romantic love of Yulia's side being the most important one. How sincere is his life?, is a question one could ask as well. Laptev is clearly smitten by Yulia, but is that true love? He realizes, it seems, her lack of affection quite early. Why then Laptev lets Yulia change her mind and accept this offer? Isn't he a bit apprehensive about marriage as well? Is it because he is too proud to take it back? We see that his feelings are a bit amphibious as well, at least at the start of the novel.
At the very start we see that Yulia doesn't loves him, doesn't even like him particularly. Nevertheless, Yulia believes him to be a good man. At any rate, Yulia's reasons for marriage are both simple and complex. I found the beginning of this novella terribly interesting and the continuation of it didn't let me down either. Right from the start, I felt myself grow attach to both of their characters. Their relationship with other family members is fascinating as well.
When Yulia accepts Laptev offer, he brings her home with her at Moscow. However, Yulia doesn't get along well with his family. A difficult time period start, and they both seem miserable in this marriage. I'm not saying that this novella focuses solely on the topic of marriage life, but that's what got me thinking the most, that's what I focused on most. What will become of it? Will they learn to love one another in the right way or not? Can people learn to love each other in marriage? Reading this novel, I asked myself how many people do get married for love? How often is desire, attraction, simple friendship or convenience a reason for marriage? Isn't marriage always a decision to take on commitment? Does it not depend on more than just feelings, that can be fleeing at best of times.
Reading this novella, I realized that marriages are complex things, arrangements built on hope and trust. There can't be a recipe for a perfect marriage because a person's needs change so often. People change. So do marriages. Sometimes love dies and it doesn't mean it wasn't true. Sometimes love disappears and then it reappears when one least expects. Sometimes love appears (seemingly) out of nowhere. There are no guarantees. Some people really get to know each other before marriage but that doesn't mean they're live happily ever after. I know of a couple who went on three dates, got married and lived happily ever after- as unlikely as it might seem. I know of couples who lived together for years and got divorced shortly after getting married. Is it that important where we start? Can there be a love at second sight? Can love flame one shot, be turned on again? There are no definite answers. I suppose one just have to put one's heart into it and hope for the best.
One thing is certain, though. I have yet to read a work of Chekhov that I won't be blown away with.

鈥淢ientras andaba, iba pensando en ella. 隆Qu茅 fuerza interior tendr谩 esa mujer para parecer tan fascinante a pesar de ser tan poco atractiva, tan angulosa y tan inquieta, por no hablar ya de su horrible vestuario, sus cabellos despeinados y su eterno desali帽o!鈥�
Si tuviera que elegir a uno de mis cinco escritores favoritos tendr铆a muchas dudas en elegir cuatro de ellos, porque hay muchos, pero lo que no tengo ninguna duda es que Ch茅jov estar铆a ah铆 siempre a pi帽贸n fijo en primera l铆nea. Es un autor que me fascina por como consigue abarcar tanto en tan pocas p谩ginas, porque incluso cuando habla de sus personajes, est谩n todos ah铆, todas las clases sociales, toda la representaci贸n de la vida misma, ya sean ricos o pobres. Usa el flujo de conciencia con una habilidad 煤nica para contarnos lo que rondaba en la mente de sus personajes: sus historias est谩n repletas de mon贸logos interiores donde sus personajes se exploran a s铆 mismos y el mundo que les rodea. Es un escritor que est谩 siempre al pie de la calle, nunca distanciado de la gente sino que nos introduce en la vida real como nadie y cuando aborda una historia, aunque aparentemente la haga f谩cil con esa prosa tan exquisita y luminosa, tambi茅n es cierto que el trasfondo es complejo: los dilemas que plantea son la vida misma, ni blancos ni negros, sino una incomensurable gama de matices entre esos dos colores.
鈥淰iajaron en un compartimento reservado. Los dos se sent铆an tristes y violentos. Ella, sentada en un rinc贸n, sin quitarse el sombrero, hac铆a como que dorm铆a, mientras 茅l, tumbado en el asiento de enfrente, pensaba con inquietud en su padre, en esa 麓persona麓, en su casa de Mosc煤, que no sab铆a si ser铆a del agrado de Yulia. Y al mirar a su mujer, que no lo quer铆a, pensaba desesperado: 驴Qu茅 he hecho?鈥�
Tres A帽os me ha encandilado. Se podr铆a considerar un relato largo o una novela corta; con sus alrededor de cien p谩ginas es su segundo texto m谩s largo y me parece una historia prodigiosa porque aqu铆 Ch茅jov aborda con exquisita lucidez esos matices de la vida que mencionaba m谩s arriba. Mientras la le铆a no pod铆a dejar de sorprenderme por la capacidad de este hombre para comprender a sus personajas porque en este mundo todos tenemos nuestras luces y nuestras sombras, y a lo largo de una vida, en este caso, a lo largo de tres a帽os, vamos evolucionando, vamos cambiando y a medida que transcurre el tiempo tambi茅n vamos percibiendo nuestro entorno con ojos m谩s comprensivos, m谩s maduros.
鈥�-Nunca he querido mucho a mi marido, as铆 que puede decirse que,en realidad, Olia es mi primer amor. Ya sabe que no me cas茅 con Aleksei por amor. Antes era tonta, sufr铆a, estaba todo el tiempo pensando que iba a echar a perder su vida tambi茅n la m铆a; ahora me doy cuenta de que no se necesita ning煤n amor. Todo eso son bobadas鈥�.
En Tres A帽os Ch茅jov cuenta la historia de una pareja que se conoce y se casa, y de c贸mo su vida va cambiando en el transcurso de tres a帽os de sus vidas. Alex Laptev, el hijo de un comerciante muy rico de Mosc煤, visita a su hermana muy enferma que vive en una peque帽a ciudad de provincias. Ah铆 conoce a Yulia Sergeyevna, mucho m谩s joven que 茅l, y se enamora de ella al instante. De la misma forma que 茅l la adora desde el primer momento en que la ve, ella al principio no acepta su oferta de matrimonio porque le parece un hombre insulso y mediocre; sin embargo, cuando reflexiona, Yulia decide desdecirse y finalmente acaba aceptando casarse con 茅l. Yulia lleva una vida aburrida y enclaustrada por su padre en provincias, y piensa que el matrimonio y su vida en Mosc煤 la va a liberar, pero aqu铆 es cuando empieza la primera decepci贸n porque desde el momento en que ambos comienzan su vida matrimonial, empiezan a sufrir: ella porque no le ama y 茅l porque reconoce que ella le desprecia.
Lo atractivo de esta historia es comprobar como Ch茅jov nos describe este recorrido en estos tres a帽os no solo desde el punto de vista de Laptev y Yulia, sino mostr谩ndonos personajes de su entorno muy relacionados con ellos porque es a trav茅s de estos personajes como tambi茅n podremos conocer mejor las circunstancias de esta pareja, c贸mo viven y como se relacionan, y porque Ch茅jov escribe como los dioses, y consigue emocionarte con muchas de sus descripciones. Ch茅jov a su vez nos demuestra que la vida es un proceso y que las personas pueden cambiar, y que toda esa parafernalia en torno al amor rom谩ntico no dejan de ser zarandajas cuando la contraponemos al d铆a a d铆a de las relaciones humanas, que son mucho m谩s complejas que todo eso. En definitiva, una joya de relato que recomiendo a qui茅n quiera aproximarse por primera vez a un escritor may煤sculo.

En Tres A帽os Ch茅jov cuenta la historia de una pareja que se conoce y se casa, y de c贸mo su vida va cambiando en el transcurso de tres a帽os de sus vidas. Alex Laptev, el hijo de un comerciante muy rico de Mosc煤, visita a su hermana muy enferma que vive en una peque帽a ciudad de provincias. Ah铆 conoce a Yulia Sergeyevna, mucho m谩s joven que 茅l, y se enamora de ella al instante. De la misma forma que 茅l la adora desde el primer momento en que la ve, ella al principio no acepta su oferta de matrimonio porque le parece un hombre insulso y mediocre; sin embargo, cuando reflexiona, Yulia decide desdecirse y finalmente acaba aceptando casarse con 茅l. Yulia lleva una vida aburrida y enclaustrada por su padre en provincias, y piensa que el matrimonio y su vida en Mosc煤 la va a liberar, pero aqu铆 es cuando empieza la primera decepci贸n porque desde el momento en que ambos comienzan su vida matrimonial, empiezan a sufrir: ella porque no le ama y 茅l porque reconoce que ella le desprecia.
Lo atractivo de esta historia es comprobar como Ch茅jov nos describe este recorrido en estos tres a帽os no solo desde el punto de vista de Laptev y Yulia, sino mostr谩ndonos personajes de su entorno muy relacionados con ellos porque es a trav茅s de estos personajes como tambi茅n podremos conocer mejor las circunstancias de esta pareja, c贸mo viven y como se relacionan, y porque Ch茅jov escribe como los dioses, y consigue emocionarte con muchas de sus descripciones. Ch茅jov a su vez nos demuestra que la vida es un proceso y que las personas pueden cambiar, y que toda esa parafernalia en torno al amor rom谩ntico no dejan de ser zarandajas cuando la contraponemos al d铆a a d铆a de las relaciones humanas, que son mucho m谩s complejas que todo eso. En definitiva, una joya de relato que recomiendo a qui茅n quiera aproximarse por primera vez a un escritor may煤sculo.

Pochi scrittori, al pari di Anton Cechov [1860-1904], hanno saputo scavare l鈥檃nimo umano nelle sue corde pi霉 intime ed esprimere in modo chiaro e avvincente, ma anche con una grandissima umanit脿 e abilit脿, quello che succede dentro ognuno di noi alle prese con il prossimo che, nei suoi magnifici racconti lunghi, pu貌 prendere le sembianze dell鈥檃more, dell鈥檕dio, dell鈥檃micizia o dell鈥檌ndifferenza e creare una trama che inevitabilmente coinvolger脿 e appassioner脿 il lettore profondamente e in maniera indimenticabile. E鈥� il caso anche di questo romanzo breve che narra dell鈥檃more che violento e improvviso coinvolge Laptev verso Julia, la giovane figlia di un medico, che dapprima rifiuta la proposta di matrimonio del giovane ma altrettanto repentinamente cambier脿 opinione acconsentendo di sposarlo pur sapendo di non amarlo e di non apprezzarlo. 鈥淭re Anni鈥� pubblicato nel 1895, racconta dettagliatamente i primi tre anni di matrimonio di questa coppia, di un uomo e di una donna cos矛 diversi, cos矛 distanti, uniti nel sacro vincolo del matrimonio: tre anni difficili per entrambi, vissuti tra speranze e disillusioni, litigi e riappacificazioni, allontanamenti e fragili ricongiungimenti, in una narrazione ad alta tensione che non concede al lettore la possibilit脿 di interrompere la lettura fino all鈥檌naspettato finale.

So empty yet so human. Once again, Chekhov addresses unexceptional lives鈥攑eople who suffer without a greater meaning, feel important but aren't, and are led by the hope of happiness only to eventual death.
In this story, a young provincial girl, Yulia Sergeyevna, marries a hideous but wealthy older man, Laptev, out of fear she won't have a better option.
"After two nights in her husband鈥檚 house Yulia Sergeyevna considered her marriage a mistake and a calamity, and if she had had to live with her husband in any other town but Moscow, it seemed to her that she could not have endured the horror of it."
Things are messy, but life continues in a mundane way. The Chekhovian realism is strong in this one.
However, it's not my favourite of Chekhov. The story is slow and unpleasurable, and so is the reading experience.

This one has a typical Chekhovian outlook. Alexei Laptev is captivated by a beautiful young woman in his neighborhood, and he asks her to marry him. She has little interest in Alexei, but agrees to marry him because it would be silly not to. He is rich, after all. Their first few years of marriage are filled with regret, ennui, and tragedy, as Alexei loses a sister, niece, and daughter. At the same time, Yulia Laptev finds herself unable to leave her husband and return to her former life in the country, as she is too caught up in the excitement of Moscow.
The two struggle through their marriage, trying to find ways to love each other while exciting things happen all around them. Despite the depressing body of the story, by the end there is a hopeful acceptance. Chekhov paints his characters beautifully, as well as the differences between country and city life. If nothing else, the story is very real, and, like life, has neither a happy nor tragic ending.

This rare attempt by Chekhov at a full-length novel ended up as a 90-page novella, so he was clearly more comfortable with the short story format - not that it matters, as most novels are overlong, and this is still an excellent read. It concerns Laptev, a wealthy man who falls in love with a country girl, Yulia; when he proposes out of the blue, she rejects him offhand, then changes her mind because she realises the marriage may be her only chance of escaping her boorish father and living a more glamorous life in Moscow. Realising the reasons behind Yulia's acceptance, Laptev regrets having made the proposal but decides to go ahead with the marriage in the hope she will come to feel something for him over time. There are a considerable number of interesting peripheral characters too, so Chekhov easily maintains the interest in a story which seems to suggest there is nothing quite as complicated as the human heart.

Three Years by Anton Chekhov is a thin book with strikingly deep-rooted messages.
Chekhov subscribes to satirical realism as not only a religion but an ethos of life, an invariable filter through which he cannot un-see the world. The contempt manifested in his characters often bleeds and blurs into contempt for his nation; it wouldn't be misguided to say that he wants readers to undergo a certain type of "punishment" while reading this book: longing, temperamental, emotional, suppression, whatever. I genuinely lament having put this book on my tbr for too long.
