Born in Debrecen, Szab贸 graduated at the University of Debrecen as a teacher of Latin and of Hungarian. She started working as a teacher in a Calvinist all-girl school in Debrecen and H贸dmez艖v谩s谩rhely. Between 1945 and 1949 she was working in the Ministry of Religion and Education. She married the writer and translator Tibor Szobotka in 1947.
She began her writing career as a poet, publishing her first book 叠谩谤谩苍测 ("Lamb") in 1947, which was followed by Vissza az emberig ("Back to the Human") in 1949. In 1949 she was awarded the Baumgarten Prize, which was--for political reasons--withdrawn from her on the very day it was given. She was dismissed from the Ministry in the same year.
During the establishment of Stalinist rule from 1949 to 1956, the government did not allow her works to be published. Since her unemployed husband was also stigmatized by the communist regime, she was forced to teach in an elementary school during this period.
Her first novel, 贵谤别蝉办贸 ("Fresco"), written in these years was published in 1958 and achieved overwhelming success among readers. Her most widely read novel, 础产颈驳茅濒 ("Abigail", 1970), is an adventure story about a schoolgirl boarding in eastern Hungary during the war.
She received several prizes in Hungary, and her works have been published in 42 countries. In 2003, she was the winner of the French literary prize Prix Femina 脡tranger for the best foreign novel.
Her novel 础产颈驳茅濒 was popularized through a much-loved television series in 1978. 础产颈驳茅濒 was also chosen as the sixth most popular novel at the Hungarian version of Big Read. Her three other novels that were in the top 100 are F眉r Elise , An Old-Fashioned Story , and The Door .

I took 5 pages of notes on Katalin Street (鈥楰atalin鈥� is Hungarian for 鈥楥atherine鈥�). With some books I can speed-read through. That is impossible for me to do with works by Magda Szab贸. You鈥檒l miss things if you read too quickly. Szab贸 does not include worthless minutiae in her novels鈥nd there are no unnecessary characters鈥nd her prose is polished (but then kudos to the translator also, Len Rix).
I was going to give this novel 3 stars, but after taking more notes after I had finished the book (because there were still some things I did not grasp upon reading the final page), I give it 3.5 stars. Which rounded up is 4 stars. 馃槉 The writing as I said was polished鈥�. crystal clear鈥eautiful. A large part of the novel in terms of story line was pitch perfect. But then I felt at a certain point the story could have ended right then and there and should have ended there, and it would have been a great story (5 stars for me). But then she added another 鈥渆nding鈥� and then another 鈥渆nding鈥� and my enthusiasm was diminishing because it just started to get to be too much鈥攏ot too long (it鈥檚 only 233 pages), just some additional twists to the story that I thought could have been left out. But that鈥檚 just my opinion鈥�
I must say the novel held my attention throughout. I very much liked the structure of the novel. It was broken into two main sections (PLACES [ PP. 1-40] and MOMENTS AND EPISODES [PP. 41-233]). The narration of the novel is either the third person narrator Szab贸 or Ir茅n (in the first person). The novel goes from 1934 to 1968. The last section of the book, MOMENTS AND EPISODES, is divided into chapters titled with the years 1934, 1944, 1952, 1956, 1961 and 1968.
Synopsis (taken from back cover): In prewar Budapest three families live side by side on gracious Katalin Street, their lives closely intertwined. A game is played by the four children in which B谩lint, the promising son of the Major, invariably chooses Ir茅n Ekeles, the headmaster鈥檚 dutiful elder daughter, over her younger sister, the scatterbrained Blanka, and little Henriette Held, the daughter of the Jewish dentist. Their lives are torn apart of 1944 by the German occupation, which only the Ekeles family survives intact. The postwar regime relocates them to a cramped Soviet-style apartment and they struggle to come to terms with social and political change, personal loss, and unstated feelings of guilt over the deportation of the Held parents and the death of their little Henriette, who had been left in their protection. But the girl survives in a miasmal afterlife, and reappears at key moments as a mute witness to the inescapable power of past events.
I hope this is not the final work of hers that I read. She wrote some 16 novels, but only 4 of them to date are widely available and have been translated into English and I鈥檝e read them all. So unless or until the New York Review of Books (or some other publisher) publishes more of her works, then I鈥檓 stuck. Here are her books translated into English:

As a general rule, I am not a "completist," needing to read everything ever written by an author that I admire, but I have to make an exception for Magda Szabo. This is my third novel by her, with one more translated book yet to go, until more are published in English. Once again, I am in awe. Her characters are so complex, her plots so layered, the non-linear chain of events revealing some secrets, and keeping others hidden, that the books are not quick and amusing, but take some work and thought to get to the heart of them. Not a wasted word or throw away scene to be found, so you have to pay attention.
This story concerns three families living side by side in pre-WWII Budapest, how the war affects them, and the lives of those that remain in the years beyond. Powerful and stark and beautiful. No wonder Szabo is considered a national treasure in her native Hungary.

In everyone鈥檚 life there is only one person whose name can be cried out in the moment of death.
Katalin Street is a strange little book. It鈥檚 easy at first to succumb to sentiments of 鈥淭his is not as good as The Door鈥� (or Iza鈥檚 Ballad, for that matter, which I happened to love even more). Admittedly, the first 30-40 pages were a bit confusing, as many reviewers said, and I wasn鈥檛 immediately captivated as I anticipated I might be; but the middle portion, oh, with Blanka鈥檚 exile and Henriette鈥檚 death* - suddenly my heart is in my throat and we鈥檙e in the thick of the dark, hollow, sadness that is Szabo鈥檚 writing. I would not have thought that a major character that is a spirit/ghost would work for me, but this is a story about the aftermath of war and the way it leaves people gutted and lost, and nothing could have been more apt .
But no one had told them that the most frightening thing of all about the loss of youth is not what is taken away but what is granted in exchange. Not wisdom. Not serenity. Not sound judgment or tranquility. Only the awareness of universal disintegration.
We reach no absolution or clarity in the end. This is not a book about hope; this is Europe during WWII. We don鈥檛 get over these things. The most alive person was the dead girl - Szabo was that kind of writer.
We set off, and I knew that never again, as long as we lived, would I really be myself, and that what had happened, and was going to happen, would be meaningless, pointless, and far too late.

This is my first novel by Magda Szabo, but it will not be my last. Not sure what took me so long, but happily I have arrived at her books. What brought me here now is that I will be in Budapest in September, and I love to read books set in the places I will be travelling to.
This book is a brilliant study of one family, the Elekes and Balint Biro who survive the war and are left bereft for their former life- a life lived on Katalin Street- 3 families, Mr. and Mrs Elekes and their daughters Iren and Blanka, Major Biro and his son, Balint and the Helds and their daughter, Henriette, living side by side, happy and content, knowing where their future was going and to have it all upended.
鈥淭he apartment was on the sixth floor of a relatively new block on the left bank of the Danube, with views across the river. From its windows they could see their old house鈥�.Balint, Iren and Mrs. Elekes would often linger on the balcony, staring across the river鈥︹€�
Less is more with Magda Szabo. Much as the story takes place in tumultuous years, such as 1944 and 1956, the war and the Russian occupation is simply a backdrop to the people in this book. Her writing is spare and eloquent. I found myself rereading her sentences as they were so fraught with meaning.
鈥� Every item there had its own history, though the soldiers moving between them knew none of it:objects have nothing to say to strangers.鈥�
With this book, the author weaves themes of family, friends, love, betrayal and guilt. Guilt for being alive when others were not. Sometimes the only way to survive is to remain with the ones that understand your loss. It is a wrenching book told beautifully and sparingly.
鈥�..I knew that never again, as long as we lived, would I really be myself, and that what had happened, and was going to happen, would be meaningless, pointless and far too late.鈥�
I can鈥檛 leave this review without saying how brilliant the translation by Len Rix was.

This is the third of the late Hungarian writer Magda Szab贸's novels to be published in a translation by Len Rix. The first two were both brilliantly memorable - was published in the UK in 2005 but took a lot longer to reach America, and followed in 2015. This time round NYRB got there first a couple of years ago, and this new Maclehose press edition has only just caught up. NYRB also have a fourth (Abigail) in the pipeline, so she is at last gaining the English speaking audience she so fully deserved. Katalin Street has been published in a different English translation once before, but that edition is now very hard to find.
This book starts with the street in Budapest that gives it its title. Three families live in neighbouring large houses - The Elekes's and their daughters Ir茅n and Blanka, Major B铆r贸, his housekeeper Mrs Temes and his son B谩lint and the Helds and their daughter Henriette.
The book has an interesting structure. First a brief introductory two pages, bookended by a couple of quotable lines:
"The process of growing old bears little resemblance to the way it is presented, either in novels or in works of medical science"
"They had discovered too that the difference between the living and the dead is merely qualitative; that it doesn't count for much. And they had learned that in everyone's life there is one person whose name can be cried out in the moment of death."
In the first full section Places we are introduced to those who survive in the "present day" (presumably late 60s when the book was written). Mr and Mrs Elekes live in a cramped Soviet-era flat with Ir茅n, her daughter Kinga, her ex-husband Pali and B谩lint. We then meet Blanka, who is living in exile on a Greek island with her new husband and in-laws. The main events are only hinted at. Then we meet Henriette, who is dead but exists in some ghostly afterlife, visiting and occasionally appearing to the other protagonists but never getting old herself.
After these three introductory chapters, we move to the main section Moments and Episodes, which is divided into six years - 1934, 1944, 1952, 1956, 1961 and 1968. 1934 is when the Helds move into Katalin Street - we see this first through the eyes of six year old Henriette, then Ir茅n, who describes her difficult relationship with the wilful, impulsive Blanka and how she fell in love with B谩lint.
The key section is the 1944 part. Ir茅n and B谩lint are celebrating their engagement, but the party is overshadowed by the events next door. The part-Jewish Held parents have been arrested by the Germans, and Major B铆r贸 hides Henriette in his house, telling the Elekes family that he is taking her to join her parents in the country. Henriette sees her house being occupied, and the family's possessions being dumped in the garden. The families have arranged holes in the garden fences, so that she can escape and hide in a neighbouring cellar in the event of a search.
We then move to 1952. After a period of imprisonment, B谩lint returns and gets a job in the hospital, where Blanka is working as a nurse. He finds himself unable to resume his relationship with Ir茅n.
The remaining sections deal with the aftermath. As in The Door and Iza's Ballad, Szab贸 writes brilliantly about the way people who love one another can inadvertently cause pain, and about the long shadows history casts on later events.

They would glance at her briefly then look away, not particularly surprised or in any way troubled. None of them would believe for a moment that it was really her, Henriette, standing there or hurrying along beside them. The expression on their faces would soften for a moment, as if they had heard a fragment of song borne on the wind, an old song they had known and sung in childhood and not heard since.

In everyone鈥檚 life there is only one person whose name can be cried out in the moment of death.
This is my first experience of Magda Szabo, a Hungarian writer, whose work is making its way into English translation, one book at a time. This was not the book I requested, but it was the one the library gave me, so I decided to just dig in and I鈥檓 pleased I did.
Szabo follows four major characters: Balint, Iren, Blanka and Henriette, four childhood friends caught in the upheaval and dangers that beset Hungary from the beginning of World War II until 1969. As we watch the changes of war and the subsequent restructuring of life in Budapest, we also watch the disintegration of the lives of the four friends.
鈥淚t鈥檚 so sad. You never could grasp the simplest facts,鈥� he said. 鈥淟ife. Death. Clean water. Life isn鈥檛 a schoolroom, Iren. There aren鈥檛 any rules.鈥�
No rules. Nothing about their lives is as it was before, and the contrast between life as it should have been and life as it has become is unbearable. What each of them has to cling to is the relationship they shared with one another, and that thread is very thin and stretched.
The story is not written in a linear timeline, so it took a bit to adjust to the time movements; there is a dead character who persists beyond the grave and interacts with the living characters. Both of these devices might indicate trouble for me, but Szabo makes them work perfectly and the 鈥済host鈥� character adds a level of understanding that would be quite impossible without her.
It was the first time in my life that I had an inkling that the dead are not dead but continue living in this world, in one form or another, indestructibly.
Perhaps Szabo is trying to tell us that when your world is destroyed, the dead become more alive to you than the living. Perhaps she wants us to see that trauma, once inflicted, never disappears entirely. Perhaps she wishes us to examine what constitutes family, the fragility of love, and the nature of betrayal. Or, perhaps she is just putting a mirror up to life and inviting us to see how little of it is really within our control.
I'm unsure how to feel about the ending. It seemed abrupt, but then what else could be said? Still, it kept this from being the full 5-stars for me. 4.5, rounded down.

I love that Magda Szab贸's books are in translation because it is so refreshing to spend some time rereading her as an author. She is the most translated Hungarian author. I enjoyed reading The Door and that novel still remains my favorite of the two I've read. Her books have an eerie and mysterious quality to them, like the characters. What I like is how she shows the strange forms the side effects of war take, how the human condition is transformed, how the ghosts of war live on. Nothing is direct, most things occur in subtle and complex layers, even the concept of survivor's guilt. It is as if Szab贸 speaks to those who know, as if she writes in code for those who truly know what she's trying to say. It sounds weird, but then again, so is this novel. Weird in a nicely distilling kind of way.
Death lingers in the plot and subtext. These are families living together in prewar Budapest. Katalin Street, where it all started, the point that connects them, can be said to be its own character. When the German Occupation relocates the family, they struggle to regain their identity and self worth, while living in a cramped apartment. They lose a sense of who they each have become. What binds them are those memories of Katalin Street because when a person loses everything, when a person must relocate out of fear, there are certain memories that stay intact:
During my reading I focused on two sisters who loved each other tremendously, yet hurt each other terribly: Iren and Blanka. As their lives are uprooted, they search to find good work to help provide for their family. They search for love. When one sister ends up in exile, the reader meets her in front story, but the true backstory is revealed slowly in subsequent chapters. That story is painful.
I think this is what makes this novel different, this way in which the chapters tease. The focus is on the psychological, something Szab贸 does so well. These characters each have inner turmoil, as does the ghost who remains with them. However, I did not like the ghost as a character. It confused the plot and characterization. I tried to focus on the story without the ghost, with the ghost as a living, and this worked better for me. If I were to recommend a Szab贸 read, I'd recommend starting with The Door. I can't wait to read another of her novels.

Now of course I understand the significance of that instant, though I had no sense of it at the time. We always realize too late the importance of drawing out the moment while you can, while it is still possible.
During my reading I focused on two sisters who loved each other tremendously, yet hurt each other terribly: Iren and Blanka. As their lives are uprooted, they search to find good work to help provide for their family. They search for love. When one sister ends up in exile, the reader meets her in front story, but the true backstory is revealed slowly in subsequent chapters. That story is painful.
I think this is what makes this novel different, this way in which the chapters tease. The focus is on the psychological, something Szab贸 does so well. These characters each have inner turmoil, as does the ghost who remains with them. However, I did not like the ghost as a character. It confused the plot and characterization. I tried to focus on the story without the ghost, with the ghost as a living, and this worked better for me. If I were to recommend a Szab贸 read, I'd recommend starting with The Door. I can't wait to read another of her novels.

A Rua Katalin 茅, mais do que um local f铆sico, esse lugar emocional onde moram a inf芒ncia e a inoc锚ncia de quatro crian莽as e suas fam铆lias, entretanto mortas ou separadas pelos acontecimentos hist贸ricos que abalaram a Hungria entre a d茅cada de 30 e a d茅cada de 60 do s茅culo XX. Essa evoca莽茫o permanente da rua onde coube toda a felicidade do mundo 茅 extremamente comovente. Contudo, a mudan莽a constante de narrador, os avan莽os e recuos no tempo e a falta de contextualiza莽茫o, sobretudo em termos pol铆ticos, tornam a leitura dif铆cil, emperrando-a. A tradu莽茫o n茫o ajuda...
Esta n茫o 茅 ainda a Magda Szab贸 de A Porta, livro, esse sim, maravilhoso e que recomendo muito mais do que este, pelo menos como primeira abordagem 脿 obra da escritora h煤ngara.
