Wall Street Journal bestselling author SJ Scott wanted to be Luke Skywalker when he grew up.
Unfortunately his complete lack of physical grace and introverted mannerism's kept the earth from having their own Jedi Knight to battle the Sith menace.
Steve “SJ Scott was born and raised in New Jersey. After finishing college with a degree in psychology he knew he needed to further his education or work on his latte making skills.
During a short stint in US Air Force, Scott was able to get his Master’s in business and then moved on to conquer the business world.
Scott then spent a couple of years working for a company not unlike the company depicted in Mike Judge’s film, “Office Space. After doing his share of “TPS reports, Scott swore he would never work for anyone but himself.
He spent the next few years making this happen. Making a decent living online and eventually pivoting to writing books, blogging and even podcasting.
Scott has written over 30 books, most of them in the "self-improvement" genre. An area that he is personally passionate about.
His books have been published in 12 different languages. So he is well on his way to world domination. However, in his heart of hearts he knows he will soon have to venture out into the universe and defeat the Sith menace.
I have been a victim of "monkey mind" for as long as I can remember. Years ago, when I tried to get a better handle on the events that were controlling my life, I focused on the external forces that I was sure had everything to do with my success [and failure] in life. If I was happy, something made me happy. If I was sad or depressed, something else made that happen, too. In my quest to gain greater control of my own life I realized that the thoughts I was creating every moment had everything to do with the quality of life I would experience at any given moment. Getting to the point, "Declutter Your Mind" is a powerful book on gaining total control of your mind, environment and shaping the future as you want it to be and not just relying on life to happen as it should.
In their third book in this series, Steve [Scott] and Barrie [Davenport] have written a book that targets one of the most critical areas we all struggle with: a life full of clutter. As they point out from the intro, your thoughts create reality, from stress and productivity to feeding into emotions, we can control and direct our thoughts to work for us instead of against us.
The book kicks off with the 4 causes of mental clutter: Stress The Paradox of Choice Too Much Stuff The Negativity Bias
The next section gives us four mental declutter habits that add serious weight to both physical and mental health. The first is "Focused Deep Breathing" where we learn the full value of focusing on deep breathing on a regular basis. The second is "Meditation" and the authors say "we suggest meditation as a tool to help you train your mind and control your thoughts." Steve and Barrie introduce the simple 11-step process to use for building the mediation habit. Next is the "Reframe All Negative Thoughts" habit. Here you will learn the "six strategies you can use throughout your day to break the pattern and begin taming your mind." Finally we have the "Teach Your Old Mind New Tricks" habit. Here we have four great strategies for gaining greater control of your thoughts instead of being a slave to them.
Honestly, I was sold on this book after the first chapter. The 4 Mental Habits are enough to add incredible value to your life. But there are three more sections that add more weight:
Part 2 is about "Decluttering Your Obligations" and determining the Core Values as, according to the authors, “one of the simplest ways to eliminate mental clutter and live a more fulfilling life is to define your values and guiding principles for your life." In this section we learn four awesome strategies for nailing your life values, clarifying priorities, Mindful Goal Setting with Quarterly Smart Goals, and Connecting Goals to Passions.
Part 3, Decluttering Your Relationships, is the section of this book I needed the most. Because relationships are largely responsible for driving many people into stressful fits of rage, from kids to parents to friends, you don't want to miss this part. Declutter Your Relationships introduces 4 Relationship Strategies guaranteed to improve, empower and strengthen your communication with people. On every level you can have relationships that function in a healthier way. Steve and Barrie show us that by being mindful of others, we develop deeper levels of empathy and emotional control.
Part 4 is about simplifying your surroundings. Where you spend the most time has a huge impact on your happiness and state of mind. This section has enough juice in it to make your living space a business powerhouse if you clean it up. As the authors state: "When your environment is cluttered, the visual chaos restricts your ability to focus."
This section will show you step-by-step how to clean up your home minimalize your digital life spend more quality time with friends and family learn to relax more and avoid a life a busy-ness all the time simplify your distractions to avoid procrastination simplify your daily actions
Declutter Your Mind has a strong focus on Mindfulness, and how we can tap into our greater selves to create a life of relaxation, peace, serenity and freedom. In a world of increasing complexities, schedules stacked up, and distractions controlling our lives, there has never been a better time than now to start "decluttering" your mind [and your life].
-- An added bonus to the book at the end are is a 400-word list of values so you can choose the values for evaluating your current quality of life.--
**So what's the final word on Declutter Your Mind?** The book is, as expected, written in a way that readers can start implementing the strategies and habits right away. The language is concise and clear and, both authors, drawing from their extensive experience discussing self-improvement and habit strategies have provided us with a timeless book chock full of actionable content. This is a definite recommend for people looking to have a simplified and calmer lifestyle.
This book felt like a compilation of techniques and methods to bring us more mindfulness. It does not go deep in any of the concepts but it brings quick tips to deal with negative thoughts, to reduce or eliminate distractions, to handle bad relationships, to define goals and values and the importance of meditation. It was nothing new to me because I've already read about the various methods cited by the authors. If you are already comfortable with GTD, the Pomodoro Technique, decluttering strategies and meditation, then this book is no novelty. For me it worked like a quick guide to remember to apply these techniques on my daily life.
There are books which u read for entertainment and forget and there are books which can change your life for good , I would say this book falls in the latter category and reading this will help you in a long way if you are dealing with a uncontrolled , mind filled with negative thoughts and despair. This is a book which can be read again and again . It helped me very much when my mind was filled with negative thoughts and kept on ruminating, I would keep this book in the league of Seven habits of highly effective people.
The authors suggest that the best way to stop worrying and relieve anxiety is to write yourself long to do lists. Oh yeah, and meditation. If you have the time to spare from completing all the lists, obviously.
Serves me right for buying click-bait on-sale books...
I grabbed this book for free through Kindle Unlimited, as I was interested in finding some literature on reducing stress, worrying, and anxiety. While this book delivers on all of those counts, I was not overly impressed.
The book feels more like an infomercial for the authors' careers, websites, blogs, and other books than a self-help guide or management book. There were no new or original ideas -- if you've read a few books already, you will be disappointed with this one -- and the regurgitated stuff you already know isn't enough to keep your attention.
If this is your very first book about this theme, from defining core values to setting SMART goals, then it is probably a good introduction. The authors do a good job of describing the things they didn't invent, which I guess is a good thing. The writing is clear and concise, which is another positive.
There are some good chapters, but unfortunately almost every single on is a list of tasks for listing tasks that will help you complete lists of tasks. And really, who needs more lists of tasks?
So, two stars for the writing and the possibility that a brand new reader to the genre will find it very useful.
Except for some parts which feel like we have to be either productive or being mindful which many will not believe requires careful planning and requires a lot of energy to begin with. Yes, being mindful needs planning for me and energy to practice it.
So yes, I appreciate this book for what it has to offer on decluttering on various aspects of our everyday modern lifestyle while it’s okay not to follow everything the book has to say. It’s okay. We all know we don’t follow our most favourite self help books to the point so yes we can read this book and help planting good things in our heads. Because that’s where we know everything starts.

Today, we will be talking about ‘Declutter your mind' by S J Scott and Barrie Davenport. It came up in my kindle feed and the premise was interesting.
If negative thoughts cloud your mind or you find yourself reliving painful past incidents in an endless loop but would like to get a grip of what you think of or to stop those replays, then this book will be a great help! The book suggests that by practising mindfulness, it is possible to declutter your mind, control the thoughts in our minds and live in the moment.
First of all, why are thoughts so important?
Our minds are constantly thinking of something or the other. Our thoughts give shape to our perception of reality. These thoughts can be positive, negative or neutral. The negative ones may have disruptive impact on us.
Despite currently having everything that we need to have a happy life, we might still not be able to enjoy our lives if our mind is clouded with negative thoughts. Distractions such as food, drugs, work, etc may help for the time being but the negative thoughts come back again, and the vicious circle starts afresh.
So, how do we solve this? How to break the loop, gain control over our mind and thoughts and how to appreciate what we currently have? The book describes this as ‘decluttering and this is explained from four perspectives decluttering our thoughts, our life obligations, our relationships and our surroundings. The book devotes four sections to each of these perspectives
The first section of the book is on decluttering the thoughts. Read the full text review at
This book claims that it will help you “declutter your mind. Only problem is that it begins to heap one thing after another on to you that it honestly left me more anxious than I was when I started reading. They go through each suggestion or technique at such a brisk pace also. Some you’ll see the value of, others you’ll just kind of go, “Uh, how does this help.
In all honesty, this is a book designed to make you more productive, not so much less anxious. If productivity is something you’re interested in, I think writers like Jon Acuff and Tim Challies do a much better job while also being more approachable than this book is.
It’s okay, I guess. I just think there are better books out there.
"I will strengthen my bond with my family by taking them on vacation at least once in six months. This will be accomplished by setting aside an hour each month during my review session.." - WOW
Ah, one more "great" advice was to think about 3 things you love about your partner, sorry, *SCHEDULE a 30 minutes block on Tuesday so you can reminisce about all the good times you've had together* and tell her/him about them Friday night. So please set aside 30 minutes on Tuesday to think about pleasant moments you've had in the past. REMEMBER - 30 minutes, not a minute more!
Book club book. Everything I already know I should be doing. But then it gives you all these things to do to organize your life and that just made my anxiety shoot up even more. :-(
It is a great book with advices that can be done immediately to 'declutter negative thoughts'. I knew most of the techniques they talked about, being a Communication major.
OK. What I'm learning from the declutter 'movement' is that a lot of people have untidy houses and we all have the concentration span of a right wing shock jock after vaping methamphetamines.
This book is descriptive and - perhaps - useful. Yes, digitization can be a problem. We have toxic relationships. Yes we need to tidy our houses...
But the slice of the book that is meaningful and evocative is the section on values. Scott asks that we list our values, then look at our behaviour and our outcomes. If the values are not aligned with our behaviour and outcomes - then something is wrong. That is a key moment of reflection and important.
Nothing New here. Nobody needs to waste their time reading this, as everyone give these 'Advice' to everyone else. 1. How to Stop Worrying = Make the longest to-do list possible, 2. How to Relieve Anxiety = Meditate instead of trying to solve the problems that caused the anxiety, 3. How to Eliminate Negative Thinking = Cut the negative peoples from your life.
This book is a nice little handbook for learning how to simplify your life and live more “in-the-moment. It provides tools and techniques for attaining more peace, comfort, and clarity by eliminating things in our lives that lead to negative thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
The book starts with giving us four causes of mental clutter as follows;
Daily Stress The Paradox of Choice-Why Jobs and Zuckerberg wore/wear the same clothes every day. Too Much “Stuff The Negativity Bias-We are hardwired to react more to negativity in our environment.
Next, the book has four parts on how to declutter various aspects of our lives.
Part I is on decluttering our mind. We learn about focused deep breathing, meditation, reframing negative thoughts, and techniques to trick our “monkey brains.
Part II is about decluttering life obligations. Here we learn to identify our core values, clarify our priorities, work with S.M.A.R.T. goals, and connect with our higher purpose.
Part III identifies ways to declutter our relationships. There are tips on being more mindful with the people we care about most. We also learn the importance of removing the toxic folks from our lives.
Part IV is on decluttering our surroundings. Here we learn about simplifying our home, digital world, activities, distractions that lead us to procrastination, and our actions.
The book was published in August of 2016. The concepts in this book are not revolutionary by any means; however, they do serve as great reminders for any of us overloaded with stress and anxiety because of all of today’s distractions.
Amazon reviewers give this one a 4.3 rating after 262 reviews. ŷ has this at a 3.7 with 929 ratings and 73 reviews. I’ve had an incredibly busy year so this was a great reminder for me to stop and smell the roses and employ the techniques outlined in this book.
Do not go for the audiobook, this is a book much more exercise and list heavy than I thought. To really be able to work with it I think it is better in print. Other than that I think it is a huge collection of advice and recommendations on decluttering different aspects of your life. I like how the book was organized and also that it doesn't waste time on endless descriptions but gives clear examples and tells you what to do. Also pointing out that you have to do this. I can recommend it if you are looking for ways to declutter and some starting guidelines. Also you will find a lot of references of where to look for more information on different topics.
This book is jampacked with good stuff. I was already familiar with a lot of the book's content, and I'm OK with that. It's nice to have so much useful stuff in one volume. I also learned a few new things from the book.
The book is like a manual for becoming a more effective, peaceful, and happy person. It covers everything from meditation to improving your personal relationships to decluttering your physical space and your virtual space.
I made lots of notes in the margins and lots of dog years in my copy of this book. I'll return to it for reference later, for sure.
I skimmed the second half of the book. These are already ideals and mindsets I currently utilize in my life. I have learn these things from "The Power of Now" "Mastery of Self" "Untether Soul" "Wheels of Life". The solution to everything in this book is making lists and planning which in certain circumstances can be positive but actually found some of the messages to be unmindful or present which does not promote a clutter free mind. I do not recommend this book.
This short and concise book on mindfulness was very good. I felt it was more approachable than many other books of similar subject. It's almost like a distillation of many of the best thoughts and exercises concerning living a more mindful and less stressful life. As a society we could all stand to live more in the moment and cut the busyness.
A good step-by step guidance of how to declutter your mind broken into four sections: your thoughts, life obligations, relationships and surroundings. The way the authors interact is precise. It actually reminds me of school notes when you write all the key points to prepare for the exam. Inspires, yet saves time. To be very picky, there is a bit too much of self-promotion from the authors.
Just a bunch of mindfulness techniques bunched together and called a book. Some of them may be useful to you but they are just the general ones, sprinkled in with some science of how they work and statistics. That's about all of it.
It is not a daily increase, but a daily decrease. Hack away at the in-essentials. - Bruce Lee
...you can manage the pain by being more proactive in what you allow to remain in your thoughts.
Without knowing our priorities, we allow the pressures of life to determine ohr actions and decisions. An email comes in, and we respond. An enticing offer appears on our Facebook page, and we buy it. Someone interrupts our work flow, and we allow it. When we don't know the bigger "why" of our lives, there are bo rules, no boundries, no priorities to help us.
