Thaumaturgy: A Philosophy of Blessings and Curses
For those who do not live solely in a scientific universe of mechanical rationality, the world is enchanted. It is filled with forces which have personality and therefore might be appealed to for deliverance or assistance. In the monotheistic religions, such forces are natural but may be suspended or re-directed by God. The result is a miracle - either a blessing or a curse which has a supernatural cause - as of course in the biblical story of Job.
But miracles are problematic for the religions which recognise them: If God is omnipotent and therefore can relieve suffering or manage the world to be benign, why does he not do so as a matter of course? Further, if God is omniscient and knows what his creatures need from him without their asking, why does he require fervent, even obsessive, prayers from their before acting on their behalf? Finally, if God is immutable, that is unaffected by all the forces over which he has control, how is it that human prayer has any effect on him at all? These are the issues which run through Roth鈥檚 Job.
In Roth鈥檚 Job, Mendel and Deborah Singer live in an obscure Jewish shtetl in the far west of the Russian Empire. Mendel does not believe in miracles: 鈥淗is upright mind was directed toward the simple earthly things and tolerated no miracle within range of his eyes.鈥� He prays because that is what is due to God, and he accepts his fate. He wants nothing; he asks for nothing: 鈥渉e was nothing more than one praying, the words went through him on the way to heaven, a hollow vessel he was, a funnel.鈥�
Deborah on the other hand does believe in miracles, but as a Jewish woman it is not her job to pray to God; instead she prays for the help of her dead relatives - for smuggling her conscripted son out of the country and bringing her handicapped son into health, among other things. Her objective is to change the way things are, favorable or not: 鈥淭o pray for the older sons, she again made pilgrimages to the cemetery. This time she prayed for an illness for Jonas and Shemariah, as she had once begged for Menuchim鈥檚 health.鈥�
This is a family, therefore, with an essential division in religious outlook when it comes to divine assistance - and an equally divergent attitude toward religion itself. Mendel鈥檚 resignation is accompanied by guilt. His misfortune, he believes, must be the result of a spiritual error or inadequacy or his part: 鈥渉e thought incessantly: Where is the sin? Where is the sin?鈥� Scrupulosity, no matter how spiritualised, is clearly not the same thing as trust in the divine. Mendel neither trusts God, nor is he willing to stand up to a God he believes is wrong as did his biblical counterpart - at least until what is really important to him is taken away.
His wife has no such spiritual qualms. If life is difficult or the world threatens, these are merely temporary events. Her first instinct is to blame Mendel for his inaction. But ultimately Deborah鈥檚 confidence is not shaken by setbacks. After all 鈥淧erhaps blessings need a longer time for their fulfillment than curses.鈥� She simply attends the graves of the ancestors more frequently. Mendel quotes scripture to her, but she won鈥檛 be bullied. She responds coldly, 鈥淢endel! You always know the wrong sentences by heart. Many thousands of sentences were written, but you remember all the superfluous ones!鈥�
The spousal differences also show up in their perceptions of the world at large. Mendel, given the status and vulnerability of Jews in the countryside, is fearful to the point of paranoia: 鈥淎lien to them was the earth on which they stood, hostile the forest, which stared back at them, spiteful the yapping of the dogs, whose mistrustful ears they had awakened...鈥� Deborah, however, engages with the local peasants, even to the extent of negotiating a free ride to the county town. She obviously knows the same facts as her husband about the dangers of drunken locals, Russian soldiers, and periodic pogroms, but exerts her will for her family regardless.
The lives of Mendel and Deborah are subsequently filled with the usual mix of happiness and tragedy with which most of humanity is familiar. Some events are so testing that they lead to apostasy and the abandonment of the idea of divine benignity itself. What remains with them throughout their lives, however, is not trust in divine good will but ritual, ceremonial routine, tradition in clothing and relationships. These are the things which sustain them until coincidence, fortune - or who knows, God - decides to favour them with the unexpected. What matters ultimately is neither faith nor hope in the divine, nor the exertion of human effort, but the support provided by a sort of familiar set of actions until,... well until the world looks better, or one is no longer around to notice the state it鈥檚 in at all.
This is the miracle of ritual. As Adam Levin puts it in his novel, The Instructions, "..it is good to do justice because God will kill you and your family whether you do justice or not." Ethics is a routine which helps us to live and die better.

Nunca he sentido tanta decepci贸n al leer el final de una novela como en esta ocasi贸n.
"Hace muchos a帽os viv铆a en Zuchnow un hombre llamado Mendel Singer. Era piadoso, temeroso de Dios y muy sencillo: un jud铆o com煤n y corriente, que ejerc铆a la modesta profesi贸n de maestro."As铆 empieza esta narraci贸n, esta f谩bula con una clara aspiraci贸n de par谩bola, con todo lo que ello conlleva de sencillez en la exposici贸n y en el retrato de personajes, de la distancia con la que se abordan los hechos y se tratan las cuitas de los protagonistas, y en donde adquiere una importancia capital la historia contada y las ense帽anzas que de ella debemos extraer.
La cosa no empez贸 mal. Me gustaba el relato, su ritmo, su estilo, el retrato de este Mendel Singer que nunca hab铆a hecho mal a nadie, tampoco bien, abrumado por la culpa, respetuoso y obediente de las leyes de dios, maestro mediocre, marido distante, padre desilusionado y, en fin, poquita cosa. Me convenc铆an los cuadros minimalistas que Roth nos iba mostrando, resaltando ahora una luz, ahora un gesto, ahora un objeto, ahora una emoci贸n, un pensamiento, de ese gastado matrimonio鈥�
鈥淓ra como un segundo matrimonio, un matrimonio repetido, esta vez con la fealdad, con la amargura, con el envejecimiento progresivo de su mujer. Y, sin embargo, la sent铆a m谩s cerca, casi asimilada a su cuerpo, inseparable y para siempre, pero insoportable, atormentadora y tambi茅n un poco odiada.鈥�鈥� del sentimiento entre amor, compasi贸n y crueldad por el hijo y hermano tullido, de las distintas aspiraciones y visiones de la vida de los hijos tan alejadas de la de los padres (tremenda la misoginia jud铆a aqu铆 retratada), del golpe cultural a la llegada a EEUU鈥�
鈥淓n Am茅rica, la pobreza era un vicio; la riqueza, un m茅rito; la virtud, la mitad del 茅xito; la fe en uno mismo, un 茅xito completo; el anarquismo un delito; los huelguistas, enemigos de la humanidad; las m谩quinas modernas, una bendici贸n del cielo鈥�鈥� de la rebeli贸n ante su amado y temido Dios鈥�
鈥淒ios es cruel, y cuanto m谩s lo obedecemos, m谩s severo se muestra con nosotros. Es m谩s poderoso que todos los poderosos y capaz de aniquilarnos con la u帽a de su me帽ique, pero no lo hace. Prefiere destruir a los d茅biles. La flaqueza de un hombre excita su fuerza, y la obediencia, su ira.鈥�鈥 de su dejarse ir final鈥� no, final no, el final todo lo trastoca, todo lo deval煤a, todo lo estropea. Mierda de final.

"Mendel Singer lighted two candles, stuck them fast to the naked wood of his desk, shut his eyes, and began to pray. With closed eyes he knew where a page came to an end, and mechanically turned to the next. Gradually his torso slipped into the old, customary swaying, his whole body prayed with him, the feet scraped the floor, the hands closed to fists and pounded like hammers on the desk, on his breast, on the book, and in the air. On the stove bench slept a homeless Jew. His breathing accompanied and supported Mendel Singer鈥檚 monotonous song, which was like a hot chant in the yellow desert, lost, and familiar with death. His own voice and the breathing of the sleeper numbed Mendel, drove every thought out of his heart; he was nothing more than a man praying; the words passed through him to Heaven; he was a hollow vessel, a funnel for prayer. So his prayers went out to meet the morning."
As the title suggests, this novel is a modern-day retelling of the parable of Job. And Joseph Roth tells it with lyrical punch. His beautiful, poetic prose is the main reason why I loved the book, and why anyone should read it.
For me, who has never read Joseph Roth's work before, it was a revelation. Every page offered evocative beauty. Every sentence was styled with colorful and musical prose.
Paradoxically, this beauteous prose had an ironic undercurrent throughout, which caused me wry delectation. The irony however is very subtle, and easy to miss out on, which makes it all the more satisfying. In my opinion it lifts an otherwise ordinary moralistic tale of despair and loss of faith in religion or life to a much higher level.
Isn't the human condition ironic after all ? Aren't we ignorant, ungrateful creatures, who fail to appreciate the worthwhile things in life, until we're deprived of them ?
Is there a divine plan or a deeper meaning to life, in which we can believe to help us not to lose hope in times of suffering ? Why are righteous people rarely rewarded with prosperity, good fortune and health ? Which attitude should we adopt to protect us against and to cope with the arbitrariness of life ?

Short review for busy readers: Well written, but largely out-dated and slow German language classic about a long-suffering Jew and his family. Warning: Abelist and sexist attitudes, as well as a highly negative view of mental health issues typical of the time period the novel was written in.
In Detail:
I totally admit that I have problems with older literature. I'm also not a fan of those "wow, let's go to America where the streets are paved in gold and everybody's a millionaire" stories from the very early 20th century. This one is both - older and with an American immigration plot - but it is more tolerable than most.
The writing is at times excellent, with wonderful descriptions of the characters and their village...but unfortunately, that's where the good stuff ends.
The story is ploddingly slow and largely bereft of significant events. If I had to think of one word to describe the plot, that word would be: boring.
Mendel Singer, the long-suffering Jew, doesn't really have a harder life than millions of others, as far as I can see. I've heard stories of real people who have had far worse turns of fate mangel their lives, which meant his problems didn't make much of an impression on me nor did I find it easy to sympathise with his anger at God.
Clearly, Roth wanted to make a statement about suffering and faith by taking the biblical character of Job (Hiob) and translating it to his own time period, but I don't think it worked very well. Or perhaps it's done too subtly to really have much impact. (Outlier here. Most German speakers I know love this novel and find it highly impactful.)
Recommended for those who can take older lit and are interested in early 20th century Jewish fiction, but for me, yet another 'classic' I couldn't bring myself to enjoy very much.

Wie kann Gott all das Leid in der Welt zulassen, wenn er ein gerechter Gott ist? Diese Theodizee-Frage stellte sich schon immer, vom biblischen Hiob bis zur heutigen Corona-Krise. Gerade heute Morgen stellt der Pfarrer bei seinen Gedanken in den Tag im Radio diese Frage. Passend zu diesem Buch. Leider gibt es viele Antworten auf diese Frage, aber ist die Richtige dabei, wenn man selbst in einer Krise steckt? Joseph Roth steckte in einer solchen Krise als er 1930 den Roman schrieb. Es sah das Unheil auf sich und seine j眉dischen Mitb眉rger zukommen. Und so schrieb er eine moderne Hiob-Geschichte.

Der 脛lteste geht zur Armee, der Zweite wandert nach Amerika aus und das M盲dchen wird dabei erwischt, dass sie sich heimlich mit einem Kosaken trifft.
Das kann Mendel nicht akzeptieren und so beschlie脽en sie, zusammen mit der Tochter dem Sohn nach New York nachzureisen, aber ohne den Kleinsten. Den 眉bernehmen quasi die Nachmieter. Dies war die Stelle, die mich v枚llig aus der Geschichte herausgebracht hat. Die Idee nach Amerika zu reisen, war f眉r mich nicht nachvollziehbar, und dann l盲脽t man als gl盲ubige Familie auch noch den Hilflosesten der eigenen Sippe zur眉ck? Mendel ist ein langb盲rtiger, verschrobener, alter Mann. Was will der in den USA? Es bestand keine Not f眉r diese Entscheidung.
Letztlich wurde ich doch noch vers枚hnt, denn Mendel sieht seine Fehler am Ende ein. Die eigentliche Hiob-Geschichte beginnt dann in den USA. Nach und nach sterben seine Liebsten, doch er h盲lt lange an Gott fest, bis er schlie脽lich auch vom Glauben abf盲llt und um Gott zu strafen, Schweinefleisch im Nachbarviertel i脽t. Mendel bricht mit Gott, aber nicht absolut. Die Gebetsutensilien bewahrt er doch noch auf. Und als er sich den Tod herbeisehnt, ergibt sich aus der Hiob-Geschichte auch noch eine Joseph-Geschichte, die mir dann am Ende eine Spur zu kitschig war. Vom Gl眉ck beseelt schl盲ft Mendel mit dem letzten Satz ein.
Fazit: Joseph Roth kopiert nicht einfach die biblische Geschichte in die Neuzeit. Er ver盲ndert die Charaktereigenschaften seines Hiobs in einigen, wesentlichen Punkten, was ich nach l盲ngerem 脺berlegen auch recht gut fand. Sprachlich ist das Werk ein Genuss, den Roth trifft mit einem sehr getragenen-poetischen Stil fast schon den biblischen Ton. Auch wenn ich mich zwischenzeitlich entzweit hatte mit Mendel, so habe ich am Ende doch noch mit ihm Frieden geschlossen. Er ist ein armer, dummer Mann, dem wenigstens am Ende ein Gl眉ck beschert ist. Das beantwortet dann aber immer noch nicht die Frage, nach dem Leid und dem gerechten Gott. Da findet dieser Roman auch keine Antwort darauf. Trotzdem lesenswert.

This story can be and has been read from many points of view.
Some perspectives well known are:
1. It is a simple religious moral story that exhorts the faithful to remain always faithful to God in spite of the continuous and threatening misfortunes.
2. It is a story about a Modern day Jew of Russia. It can be read as a synchronic study of the Russian Jews of early twentieth century. The Jewish household comes alive as you read the book.
3. This can be read as a modern retelling of the Biblical book of Job where the answer for the question of the innocent suffering was tried at.
Being a person very much attracted to Biblical themes and specially attracted to the book of Job, it was only natural for me to decide on this book when I wanted to try out Joseph Roth for the first time.
And so, let me focus on these aspects in my review than the other aspects.
Job = Mendel Singer:
In this modern retelling of the Biblical book of Job the main character's name is Mr. Mendel Singer. Mendel Singer is in every way like the Biblical Job except that he is not as rich as Job. He is introduced as the God fearing Jew who is blessed with a lovely wife and two sons and a beautiful daughter. Then comes the tragedies, the birth of the fourth child, an epileptic Menuchim. From then on the misfortunes keep mounting - death of sons in the war followed by wife's death, daughter's madness and the loss of homeland. He is left with no sons, no daughter, no wife and no homeland (for he had already moved from Russia to America leaving the epileptic Menuchim at home with the neighbours). He who was faithful to God all through his life begins to have doubts and ultimately blasphemes. And then the great miracle happens and everything, or better, almost everything is restored. This is the synopsis of the story of JOB/SINGER.
I was amazed at the way Joseph Roth had told it exactly in the way the book of Job is organized. The Introduction of the Just Man with his Blessings - the misfortunes - his steadfastness in the initial misfortunes - his wife's lamentation regarding the misfortunes - his friends' exhortation to remain faithful - Job's anger with God and his questioning of God's presence - and the ultimate reply by God and the final Restoration.
This novel can be very despairing and at the end when the final miracle happens it can be very uplifting. A fantastic read for the believers.

L'essenza della letteratura
C'猫 poco da fare, certi autori per me costituiscono l'essenza della letteratura. Il grande Roth (Joseph, sia chiaro) non sbaglia un colpo, mi fa venire un blocco allo stomaco dopo due pagine e mi impedisce di smettere di leggere fino a che non decide lui, vale a dire alla fine del libro. Poi, finite le pagine, il blocco allo stomaco si protrae nel tempo

Este livro 茅 est煤pido. Li-o at茅 ao fim porque achei que a estupidez acabaria por abrandar e at茅 teria um prop贸sito. Nada disso, este livro 茅 est煤pido. Na capa consta o testemunho do grande Stefan Zweig: 鈥淯ma obra-prima da literatura universal que pode ser lida em qualquer idade desde que seja compreendida com o cora莽茫o鈥�, mas o meu n茫o se condoeu com este homem ignorante e lamuriento nem por um instante.
鈥滼贸鈥� 茅 um livro frustrante pelas m谩s decis玫es tomadas pelas personagens, pela mesquinhez de sentimentos, pela constante avilta莽茫o das mulheres鈥�
脡 loira e doce, tem olhos azuis que revelam a Mendel Singer mais bondade que intelig锚ncia! Que seja burra! As mulheres n茫o precisam de c茅rebro.
...e, estranhamente, nem foi o car谩cter religioso que me melindrou, pois com um t铆tulo destes, eu sabia ao que ia e, de facto, gosto de assistir 脿s crises de f茅 dos outros, como tamb茅m j谩 tive a minha. Acontecem muitas desgra莽as a Mendel Singer, o protagonista, um professor judeu verdadeiramente desafortunado, que o levam a virar-se contra Deus.
Estou sozinho e quero estar sozinho. Durante todos estes anos amei Deus e ele odiou-me. Todos estes anos o temi, j谩 nada posso fazer. Todas as flechas da sua alijava se cravaram em mim. S贸 lhe resta matar-me. Mas 茅 demasiado cruel para isso. Hei-de viver, viver, viver.
Estamos na R煤ssia, no in铆cio do s茅culo XX, e Mendel 茅 professor, recebe uns quantos mi煤dos em casa, a quem ensina os textos sagrados, mas os filhos s茫o analfabetos e ele pr贸prio n茫o sabe escrever. N茫o percebi, confesso. Tem quatro filhos. "Hiob" ist der vierte Roman von Joseph Roth, den ich gelesen habe. Zwar bleibt der "Radetzkymarsch" mein Lieblingsroman von Roth, doch "Hiob" ist nicht weit davon entfernt. Im Zentrum stehen der Toralehrer Mendel Singer und seine Familie. Singer wird von lauter Schicksalsschl盲gen heimgesucht. Von dem Lohn des Bibelunterrichts kann die Familie kaum leben. Und dann kommen auch noch Krankheit, Tod und Krieg hinzu. Die Frage, warum Gott das Leid zul盲sst, ist ein zentrales Motiv des Romans.
Der erste Teil des Romans spielt in dem Schtetl Zuchnow in Russland. Der zweite Teil beginnt 1900 mit dem Leben im Exil in Amerika. Der Roman endet um 1920. Er ist urspr眉nglich 1930 erschienen, war also zeitlich sehr nahe an der Gegenwart der Leser. Das mag man auf den ersten Blick nicht meinen, wenn man nur den Titel "Hiob" h枚rt. Die biblische Inspiration ist also nicht zeitlich sondern inhaltlich gelagert. Das hat mir sehr gut gefallen. In gewisser Weise ist es dasselbe Prinzip, dass Barbara Kingsolver mit der zeitlichen Neuinterpretation von "David Copperfield" in "Demon Copperhead" angewandt hat. Auch sprachlich gibt es bei Roth Anleihen beim Alten Testament. Die Worte sind andere, da die Zeit und die Welt eine andere ist, aber Einfachheit und Rhythmus lassen in einigen Abschnitten Parallelen erkennen.
Beide Teile des Buches haben mich gleich stark fasziniert. Lediglich die Motivation f眉r die Emigration in die USA blieb f眉r mich unklar. Das viel kritisierte Ende (u.a. von Heinrich B枚ll) hat f眉r mich funktioniert. "Hiob" wird sicherlich nicht mein letzter Roman von Joseph Roth gewesen sein.
Der erste Teil des Romans spielt in dem Schtetl Zuchnow in Russland. Der zweite Teil beginnt 1900 mit dem Leben im Exil in Amerika. Der Roman endet um 1920. Er ist urspr眉nglich 1930 erschienen, war also zeitlich sehr nahe an der Gegenwart der Leser. Das mag man auf den ersten Blick nicht meinen, wenn man nur den Titel "Hiob" h枚rt. Die biblische Inspiration ist also nicht zeitlich sondern inhaltlich gelagert. Das hat mir sehr gut gefallen. In gewisser Weise ist es dasselbe Prinzip, dass Barbara Kingsolver mit der zeitlichen Neuinterpretation von "David Copperfield" in "Demon Copperhead" angewandt hat. Auch sprachlich gibt es bei Roth Anleihen beim Alten Testament. Die Worte sind andere, da die Zeit und die Welt eine andere ist, aber Einfachheit und Rhythmus lassen in einigen Abschnitten Parallelen erkennen.
Beide Teile des Buches haben mich gleich stark fasziniert. Lediglich die Motivation f眉r die Emigration in die USA blieb f眉r mich unklar. Das viel kritisierte Ende (u.a. von Heinrich B枚ll) hat f眉r mich funktioniert. "Hiob" wird sicherlich nicht mein letzter Roman von Joseph Roth gewesen sein.

Este tipo de historias no est谩n destinadas a gustarme. Lo sospechaba ya antes de empezar la novela, pero la intriga por conocer el tan comentado final (que si se para una a atar los cabos, evidentes, era m谩s que predecible鈥�) y esa curiosidad y atracci贸n que provoca lo que nos es incomprensible, me llevaron a leerla.
Y es que las par谩bolas, sus 鈥渆nse帽anzas鈥� y sentido, han sido desde siempre inaccesibles a mi comprensi贸n, se me escapa la noci贸n del bien de ese tipo de textos, qu茅 es lo bueno de lo que se intenta 驴ense帽ar?, qu茅 es incluso lo que se intenta transmitir exactamente.
En una especie de reescritura del mito de Job, Roth narra la vida de Mendel Singer, un maestro jud铆o, piadoso, temeroso de Dios y muy sencillo, casto de alma: nada ten铆a de que arrepentirse y tampoco deseaba nada鈥� y a partir de aqu铆, me pregunto鈥�

Y, efectivamente, estoy de acuerdo con aqu茅l que critica el final, no s茅 ya si a estas alturas esto es o no un spoiler, pero鈥� 驴por qu茅 se recompensa a Job? Si a las personas buenas les suceden cosas malas, si la 鈥渂ondad鈥� no encuentra siempre su recompensa, si Dios ha de ser amado al margen de lo que nos encontremos en nuestro camino, si la fe es una cuesti贸n al margen, independiente de nuestro destino鈥� 驴por qu茅 ceder y darle un final feliz, un final imposible, hasta absurdo e incongruente? S铆, el final lo estropea todo.

鈥淓scritor, Austr铆aco, Muerto en el exilio鈥� es lo que reza la tumba de Joseph Roth en Par铆s y creo que define muy bien qui茅n fue Joseph Roth, y viniendo como vengo de leer su Correspondencia con Stefan Zweig, quiz谩s he podido entrar en m谩s profundidad en lo que significa un libro como este Job, que escribi贸 en 1930, uno de sus pocos 茅xitos junto a Radetzky. Echando un vistazo a la biograf铆a de Roth y a sus cartas queda clar铆simo lo mucho que hay de Mendel Singer en el propio Roth, no tengo duda de que en Job, el autor volc贸 muchas de sus propias experiencias y sufrimientos, porque entiendo esta novela como la historia de autodescubrimiento de un hombre, Mendel Singer, hasta que en su vejez parece encontrar ese equilibrio que siempre busc贸 y nunca encontr贸. Job es el gran testimonio de una crisis de vida, de fe y de identidad. Mientras Joseph Roth escrib铆a su Job no solo se sinti贸 terriblemente culpable por no haberse dedicado m谩s a su esposa, gravemente enferma, sino que un presente incierto marcado por el emergente nacionalsocialismo amenazaba con destruir todo a su paso, todo esto queda impregnado en la atm贸sfera de toda la novela. Tal como 茅l mencionaba en una carta a Zweig 鈥淓ntretanto sabr谩 usted que nos aproximamos a grandes cat谩strofes, todo conduce a una nueva guerra. No doy un c茅ntimo por nuestras vidas. Los b谩rbaros han conseguido gobernar. No se haga ilusiones. Gobierna el infierno.鈥� Esta novela es anterior a esta carta donde vaticinaba lo que ocurrir铆a a帽os despu茅s, pero Roth ya sab铆a lo que lo iba a pasar y que iba a ser abocado al exilio, 茅l, que tanto amaba el concepto de patria.
"Y entonces un grito sali贸 del interior de Deborah, un grito que son贸 como surgido de un cuerno en el que hubiera embutido un coraz贸n humano. Aquel grito se escuch贸 en toda la ciudad, pero fue olvidado de inmediato. Pues el silencio que le sigui贸 nunca m谩s volvi贸 a o铆rse."
La novela est谩 ambienta a principios del siglo XX en Zuchnow, suroeste de Rusia, ahora Ucrania. El matrimonio formado por Mendel y Deborah Singer llevan una vida sencilla, con cuatro hijos, el menor, Menuchim, impedido. En comparaci贸n a su esposa, una mujer realista y pr谩ctica, Mendel es m谩s retra铆do, apoy谩ndose en Dios para todo: espera milagros para todo incluso para la curaci贸n de su hijo. "驴Qu茅 me importa a m铆 ella?, pens贸 Mendel. 驴Para qu茅 seguimos viviendo juntos? Nuestro deseo se desvaneci贸. Nuestros hijos son mayores y saben cuidarse. 驴Que hago viviendo con ella? Comer lo que prepara. Est谩 escrito que no es bueno que el hombre est茅 solo. As铆 que vivimos juntos.鈥� Cuando Deborah busca la ayuda del rabino y que le aconseje como enfrentar la enfermedad de su hijo menor, la respuesta ser谩 paciencia y la espera de un milagro. Joseph Roth no romantiza el mundo de los jud铆os orientales sino que les vaticina un destino oscuro y cuestiona esa inacci贸n en espera de que la soluci贸n a los males venga del exterior. Cuando llegado un momento se les ofrece la oportunidad de emigrar a Am茅rica, lo hacen dejando atr谩s al peque帽o Menuchim.
"驴Qu茅 me importa a m铆 esta gente?, pens贸 Mendel. 驴Qu茅 me importa a m铆 toda Am茅rica? Le pareci贸 como si hubiera salido de si mismo, como si a partir de ahora tuviera que vivir separado de su propio ser. Su coraz贸n empez贸 a enfriarse lentamente. Lat铆a como un mazo met谩lico contra el fr铆o cristal. Mendel Singer se hab铆a quedado solo. Ya estaba en Am茅rica鈥�"
鈥淢endel Singer no se movi贸. Se encontraba en el pelda帽o m谩s alto de una estrecha escalera de hierro, de espaldas al puerto, al pa铆s, al continente, a la patria, al pasado.鈥� La experiencia de la emigraci贸n que vive Mendel Singer se puede mimetizar con la propia vida itinerante de Joseph Roth, una vida en Am茅rica que aparte de la estabilidad econ贸mica no le proporciona mucho m谩s a Mendel Singer que desarraigo, dudas y un conflicto consigo mismo. Una vez pasada esa primera etapa en la que estabilidad econ贸mica se asienta, Roth entra a cuestionar el sue帽o americano, la tierra de las oportunidades ilimitadas que al final se cobrar谩n un precio. El precio a pagar de estar alejado del hogar, de las ra铆ces, es siempre demasiado alto, muchas cosas, personas, momentos se quedan en el camino y ya ser谩n irrecuperables. Roth entra de lleno en el punto de inflexi贸n en el que los emigrantes, no solo jud铆os, aunque especialmente ellos procedentes de la Europa del Este, se vieron confrontados a un salto mortal en el terreno del idioma, de la cultura, de una mentalidad totalmente opuesta, sumergi茅ndose en una modernidad que les exig铆a algo a cambio. Joseph Roth no solo est谩 cuestionando la ortodoxia oriental apegada a un dios r铆gido sino que al mismo tiempo est谩 cuestionando una modernidad que pr谩cticamente les hac铆a abjurar de ese dios. Un cambio brutal para Mendel y su esposa Deborah, pr谩cticamente abocados a ajustarse a una civilizaci贸n occidental que avanzaba a la velocidad de la luz. Independientemente del problema jud铆o, Joseph Roth est谩 abordando la cuesti贸n de la emigraci贸n emparent谩ndola al exilio, el primero es voluntario, el segundo obligado, y sin embargo, el precio a pagar ser谩 muy alto en ambos aspectos.
"Como y bebo y rezo y respiro. Pero mi sangre se paraliza. Mis manos est谩n marchitas. Mi coraz贸n, vac铆o. Ya no soy Mendel Singer. Soy lo que queda de Mendel Singer. Am茅rica nos ha matado. Am茅rica es una patria, pero una patria mortal. Lo que all谩 en nuestra casa era el d铆a, es aqu铆 la muerte.鈥�
Independientemente del desarraigo de Mendel Singer el otro punto importante que tocar谩 Joseph Roth ser谩 el de su crisis de fe, y en este aspecto lo relaciona con el Job bibl铆co. Mendel y su relaci贸n con Dios, una fe que es f谩cil sobrellevar mientras quiz谩s no haya embates de la vida y sin embargo que entra en crisis cuando es consciente de que ni los rezos lo est谩n librando de las desgracias. Una vez en Am茅rica, Mengel Singer entra en guerra con un Dios del que piensa que lo ha abandonado. Lo que quiz谩s m谩s me sorprende de Joseph Roth, incluso en sus novelas m谩s irregulares, es la precisi贸n de su prosa, nada farragosa, sencilla, e incluso con una cierta estructura cl谩sica. Por esto, incluso cuando Mendel Singer entra en conflicto interno por el tema de la fe, resulte tan accesible y tan f谩cil de entender el dilema en el que se encuentra sumergido este personaje: Joseph Roth siempre convierte en f谩cil lo muy complejo. Su lenguaje cautiva por su sencillez, por su accesibilidad, por su conexi贸n con un cierto lirismo, aunque ese tormento interno que llevaba a cuestas Roth lo deja siempre reflejado en la profunda melancol铆a de sus textos. Es una novela conmovedora por c贸mo aborda los conflictos que se ven obligados a vivir una familia jud铆a pobre, siempre apoyados en Dios como sost茅n, sin embargo, llegado un punto este Dios no los proteger谩. El destino no est谩 programado, y de esto sab铆a mucho Joseph Roth. Hasta ahora mi novela favorita suya.

Ahora, por fin, saboreaba su dolor con una sensaci贸n de triunfo."

Roths Geschichte von Hiob ist herzzerrei脽end, vor allem weil der Autor jede einzelne Figur von Mendel Singers Familie derart tief geschildert hat und auch die Beziehungsgeflechte der Familienmitglieder untereinander ganz gro脽artig beleuchtet werden: zum Beispiel wie sich die Ehe der Singers entwickelt, wie sich die Ehepartner einander entfremden, wie die Kinder, denen die Eltern die Verantwortung f眉r den behinderten Bruder Menuchim aufgedr眉ckt haben, sich am wehrlosen Opfer r盲chen und es aus Gedankenlosigkeit und ein bisschen kindlicher Grausamkeit fast umbringen und nachher die Schuldgef眉hle verarbeiten. Die Tiefe aller Figuren ist wirklich erstaunlich, sogar der behinderte Sohn wird irgendwie noch grandios gezeichnet, obwohl er ja 眉ber weite Strecken den Romans noch so gut wie gar nix zum Geschehen beitr盲gt, au脽er dass er f眉r alle eine Last darstellt und einiges an Entfaltungsm枚glichkeiten jedes einzelnen Familienmitglieds verhindert. Als Projektionsfl盲che und als Ausrede ist er so wundervoll gezeichnet, dass es nur eine Freude ist. Aber auch die Entwicklung der Geschwister von der Teenagerzeit bis zur Adoleszenz wird grandios beschrieben. Die beiden S枚hne von denen einer n盲mlich Jonas zum Milit盲r m枚chte und der andere Schemarja vor dem Armeedienst nach Amerika fl眉chtet, die Rebellion der Tochter Miriam und ihre sexuelle Befreiung, die die sehr gl盲ubigen Eltern in Zugzwang bringt, Miriam aus ihrem gewohnten Umfeld zur rei脽en und zu Samuel nach Amerika auszuwandern, da sie sich regelm盲脽ig den Soldaten anbietet. Dabei ist der behinderte Sohn Menuchim im Weg, er kann mit seiner Behinderung nicht emigrieren und wird bei einer Familie im Dorf zur眉ckgelassen. Die Eltern sind in einem moralischen Dilemma und entscheiden sich, die Keuschheit der Seele der Tochter zu retten und nicht mehr ausschlie脽lich das k枚rperliche Wohl des behinderten Menuchim im Fokus zu haben, wie sie dies all die Jahre getan haben.
Auch in Amerika, wo es anfangs f眉r die Familie besser zu gehen scheint, wird Mendel von weiteren Schicksalsschl盲gen gebeutelt. Sein Sohn Sam (Schemarja) hat es zu Reichtum gebracht und in dem Moment, als Mendel endlich einmal darauf vertraut, dass auch er Gl眉ck hat, und sich einen Wimpernschlag lang positive Gef眉hle und Zukunftshoffnungen g枚nnt, wird sein Sohn Sam zum amerikanischen Milit盲r eingezogen und f盲llt, Jonas gilt bereits l盲nger in Russland verschollen. Als Mendel und seine Frau Deborah erfahren, dass beide S枚hne ziemlich sicher tot sind, stirbt seine Frau am selben Tag an gebrochenem Herzen. Aber die Tiefschl盲ge sind noch nicht vorbei, der gl盲ubige Mendel muss auch noch erfahren, dass sein behinderter Sohn Menuchim in den Kriegswirren wahrscheinlich nicht den Funken einer Chance hatte und seine Tochter Miriam landet in einer Irrenanstalt, sie ist unheilbar krank. So bleibt nur noch der mittlerweile greise Mendel 眉brig, dem sein Gott Jahwe nicht mal die Gnade erweist, dass er ihn sterben l盲sst, er muss noch ewig weiterleiden und leben und avanciert im j眉dischen Viertel sogar als Symbolfigur des Leidens und der Pr眉fungen Gottes. Wird er anf盲nglich noch recht wertsch盲tzend behandelt, weil er und seine Familie quasi das gesamte Ungl眉ck des Viertels auf sich gezogen haben, so behandeln ihn seine Glaubensgenossen mit der Zeit immer respektloser, quasi nach dem Motto er ist halt selbst schuld.
Am Ende ist der Vergleich mit der Hiob Geschichte einerseits offenbar, denn Mendel Singer bekommt wie durch ein Wunder seinen Sohn Menuchim zur眉ck, noch dazu geheilt von seiner Behinderung und erfolgreich als Komponist. Hiob bekam sieben von zehn S枚hnen zur眉ck, jedoch die Tonalit盲t und die religi枚se Botschaft beider Geschichten ist komplett anders, denn der alttestamentarische Hiob verliert nie den Gottglauben und wird deshalb belohnt, im Gegensatz zu Mendel, der sich von seinem Jahwe voller Groll abwendet und dann pl枚tzlich vom Gl眉ck heimgesucht wird.
Hier wird von Roth das religi枚se Muster der Reichen und M盲chtigen kritisiert, die durch die Vereinnahmung des institutionellen Glaubens so gut wie immer die bestehenden Verh盲ltnisse zementieren. Die Armen sollen in Armut, Gottglauben an Pr眉fungen und Annahme dieses Schickaals genau im ewigen Dilemma bleiben, ohne Hoffnung, in der diesseitigen Welt ihr Schicksal zu verbessern, nicht mal marginal. Ein besseres Los wird dann auf das Leben nach dem Tod verschoben, 盲hnlich wie man dem Esel die Karotte vor die Nase h盲ngt, damit sich die Reichen ungehindert weiter die Taschen vollstopfen k枚nnen. Denn f眉r Oberschicht gilt ja so eine Demut vor Gott nicht. Dieser Glaube, der ja in vielen institutionellen Religionen, die sich immer den M盲chtigeren anbiedern, unter den Armen, Geschundenen, und Unterprivilegierten wie auch Frauen weiterverbreitet wird, geht ja sogar so weit, dass viele im Vertrauen auf Gott und das unausweichliche Schicksal nicht einmal die seltenen geringen Chancen ergreifen, die sich ganz gl眉cklich einstellen. Hierzu gibt es schon zu Beginn des Romans von Joseph Roth eine Schl眉sselszene, als ein Arzt zu Mendel Singer kommt und ihm anbietet, dass er seinen behinderten Sohn Menuchim von seiner Epilepsie heilen kann und das auch noch gratis. Mendel Singer nimmt das Angebot nicht an, denn Gott muss ihm helfen und ein Wunder vollbringen. 鈥濰ilf Dir selbst, dann hilft Dir auch Gott鈥�, soll einfach f眉r gl盲ubige arme Leute nicht gelten. Dabei muss ich immer einen katholischen Witz denken.
"Ein sehr gl盲ubiger Christ hat einen Autounfall und liegt blutend im Stra脽engraben. Da kommt eine Passantin und will dem Mann helfen, dieser nimmt die Hilfe aber nicht an und sagt, dass ihm Gott helfen wird. Dann kommt ein Polizist vorbei und will die Rettung rufen, aber der Mann nimmt die Hilfe nicht an, weil er auf die Hilfe Gottes wartet. Zuletzt kommt auch noch zuf盲llig ein Sanit盲ter vorbei, der ihn verbinden will, aber der Mann lehnt die Hilfe ab und verblutet. An der Himmelst眉re muss er warten und wird nicht eingelassen. Der Mann will mit Gott sprechen und trifft auf Petrus. Petrus will ihn nicht in den Himmel lassen, denn er ist zu dumm f眉r den Himmel. Der Mann hadert, warum ihm Gott nicht geholfen habe und Petrus antwortet. Jetzt hat Dir Gott eine Passantin, einen Polizisten und noch einen Sanit盲ter geschickt und Du hast Gottes Gnade nicht angenommen, Du bist nicht f眉r den Himmel geeignet."
Diese Geisteshaltung findet sich 眉brigens nicht nur seit ewigen Zeiten in vielen Religionen, sondern auch heutzutage in der gesamten Esoterik und der Hom枚opathie.
Die Religionskritik Roths zieht sich durch den gesamten Roman. Stimmte Mendels Frau Deborah anfangs in Russland noch zu, als die Familie die Hilfe des Arztes f眉r Menuchim nicht annahm und vertraute auf eine dumme Prophezeiung des Rabbis, f眉r die dieser sogar noch Geld nahm, so kommt sie in Amerika durch die ge盲nderte Philosophie und die Aufbruchsstimmung zu einer neuen Erkenntnis, was der Dialog von Mendel und Deborah klar darlegt.
Mendel: 鈥濧ch dem Armen geht es schlecht, wenn er ges眉ndigt hat, und wenn er krank ist, geht es ihm schlecht. Man soll sein Schicksal tragen. Lass die S枚hne einr眉cken, sie werden nicht verkommen. Erst als Mendel Gott aus seinem Leben verbannt, kehrt das Gl眉ck bei ihm ein und er bekommt zumindest ein Kind, n盲mlich Menuchim ganz sicher wieder durch ein Wunder zur眉ck und als Zugabe drauf gleich eine ganze Familie mit Enkelkindern, das Schicksal von Miriam ist auch noch nicht ganz besiegelt und Jonas, der verschollene Sohn in Russland k枚nnte in 脰sterreich gesehen worden sein. Das ist diametral entgegengesetzt zur Philosophie der Hiob Geschichte.
鈥濭ott ist grausam, und je mehr man ihm gehorcht, desto strenger geht er mit uns um. Er ist m盲chtiger als die M盲chtigen, mit dem Nagel seines kleinen Fingers kann er ihnen den Garaus machen, aber er tut es nicht. Nur die Schwachen vernichtet er gerne. Die Schw盲che eines Menschen reizt seine St盲rke, und der Gehorsam weckt seinen Zorn.鈥�
Das hat fast schon marxistische, aber zumindest sozialistische Z眉ge, mit gottesl盲sterlichen Diskussionen und Anwandlungen von sehr gl盲ubigen Menschen (und das meine ich f眉r viele Religionen). Sensationell f眉r diese Zeit!
Fazit: F眉r mich ein gro脽artiger Roman und von der G眉te her fast so gut wie der Radetzkymarsch, wenn auch dieser von den Analogien und vom Plot her im Roman mit feinerer Feder konzipiert ist, so 眉berrascht und 眉berzeugt Roths Hiob durch die Tiefe der Figuren und dadurch, wie grandios der biblische Stoff umgearbeitet wurde. Die feinen Seitenhiebe und Analogien treten nicht im Roman auf, sondern werden erst im Vergleich mit dem alttestamentarischen Hiob offenbar.
Auch in Amerika, wo es anfangs f眉r die Familie besser zu gehen scheint, wird Mendel von weiteren Schicksalsschl盲gen gebeutelt. Sein Sohn Sam (Schemarja) hat es zu Reichtum gebracht und in dem Moment, als Mendel endlich einmal darauf vertraut, dass auch er Gl眉ck hat, und sich einen Wimpernschlag lang positive Gef眉hle und Zukunftshoffnungen g枚nnt, wird sein Sohn Sam zum amerikanischen Milit盲r eingezogen und f盲llt, Jonas gilt bereits l盲nger in Russland verschollen. Als Mendel und seine Frau Deborah erfahren, dass beide S枚hne ziemlich sicher tot sind, stirbt seine Frau am selben Tag an gebrochenem Herzen. Aber die Tiefschl盲ge sind noch nicht vorbei, der gl盲ubige Mendel muss auch noch erfahren, dass sein behinderter Sohn Menuchim in den Kriegswirren wahrscheinlich nicht den Funken einer Chance hatte und seine Tochter Miriam landet in einer Irrenanstalt, sie ist unheilbar krank. So bleibt nur noch der mittlerweile greise Mendel 眉brig, dem sein Gott Jahwe nicht mal die Gnade erweist, dass er ihn sterben l盲sst, er muss noch ewig weiterleiden und leben und avanciert im j眉dischen Viertel sogar als Symbolfigur des Leidens und der Pr眉fungen Gottes. Wird er anf盲nglich noch recht wertsch盲tzend behandelt, weil er und seine Familie quasi das gesamte Ungl眉ck des Viertels auf sich gezogen haben, so behandeln ihn seine Glaubensgenossen mit der Zeit immer respektloser, quasi nach dem Motto er ist halt selbst schuld.
Am Ende ist der Vergleich mit der Hiob Geschichte einerseits offenbar, denn Mendel Singer bekommt wie durch ein Wunder seinen Sohn Menuchim zur眉ck, noch dazu geheilt von seiner Behinderung und erfolgreich als Komponist. Hiob bekam sieben von zehn S枚hnen zur眉ck, jedoch die Tonalit盲t und die religi枚se Botschaft beider Geschichten ist komplett anders, denn der alttestamentarische Hiob verliert nie den Gottglauben und wird deshalb belohnt, im Gegensatz zu Mendel, der sich von seinem Jahwe voller Groll abwendet und dann pl枚tzlich vom Gl眉ck heimgesucht wird.
Hier wird von Roth das religi枚se Muster der Reichen und M盲chtigen kritisiert, die durch die Vereinnahmung des institutionellen Glaubens so gut wie immer die bestehenden Verh盲ltnisse zementieren. Die Armen sollen in Armut, Gottglauben an Pr眉fungen und Annahme dieses Schickaals genau im ewigen Dilemma bleiben, ohne Hoffnung, in der diesseitigen Welt ihr Schicksal zu verbessern, nicht mal marginal. Ein besseres Los wird dann auf das Leben nach dem Tod verschoben, 盲hnlich wie man dem Esel die Karotte vor die Nase h盲ngt, damit sich die Reichen ungehindert weiter die Taschen vollstopfen k枚nnen. Denn f眉r Oberschicht gilt ja so eine Demut vor Gott nicht. Dieser Glaube, der ja in vielen institutionellen Religionen, die sich immer den M盲chtigeren anbiedern, unter den Armen, Geschundenen, und Unterprivilegierten wie auch Frauen weiterverbreitet wird, geht ja sogar so weit, dass viele im Vertrauen auf Gott und das unausweichliche Schicksal nicht einmal die seltenen geringen Chancen ergreifen, die sich ganz gl眉cklich einstellen. Hierzu gibt es schon zu Beginn des Romans von Joseph Roth eine Schl眉sselszene, als ein Arzt zu Mendel Singer kommt und ihm anbietet, dass er seinen behinderten Sohn Menuchim von seiner Epilepsie heilen kann und das auch noch gratis. Mendel Singer nimmt das Angebot nicht an, denn Gott muss ihm helfen und ein Wunder vollbringen. 鈥濰ilf Dir selbst, dann hilft Dir auch Gott鈥�, soll einfach f眉r gl盲ubige arme Leute nicht gelten. Dabei muss ich immer einen katholischen Witz denken.
"Ein sehr gl盲ubiger Christ hat einen Autounfall und liegt blutend im Stra脽engraben. Da kommt eine Passantin und will dem Mann helfen, dieser nimmt die Hilfe aber nicht an und sagt, dass ihm Gott helfen wird. Dann kommt ein Polizist vorbei und will die Rettung rufen, aber der Mann nimmt die Hilfe nicht an, weil er auf die Hilfe Gottes wartet. Zuletzt kommt auch noch zuf盲llig ein Sanit盲ter vorbei, der ihn verbinden will, aber der Mann lehnt die Hilfe ab und verblutet. An der Himmelst眉re muss er warten und wird nicht eingelassen. Der Mann will mit Gott sprechen und trifft auf Petrus. Petrus will ihn nicht in den Himmel lassen, denn er ist zu dumm f眉r den Himmel. Der Mann hadert, warum ihm Gott nicht geholfen habe und Petrus antwortet. Jetzt hat Dir Gott eine Passantin, einen Polizisten und noch einen Sanit盲ter geschickt und Du hast Gottes Gnade nicht angenommen, Du bist nicht f眉r den Himmel geeignet."
Diese Geisteshaltung findet sich 眉brigens nicht nur seit ewigen Zeiten in vielen Religionen, sondern auch heutzutage in der gesamten Esoterik und der Hom枚opathie.
Die Religionskritik Roths zieht sich durch den gesamten Roman. Stimmte Mendels Frau Deborah anfangs in Russland noch zu, als die Familie die Hilfe des Arztes f眉r Menuchim nicht annahm und vertraute auf eine dumme Prophezeiung des Rabbis, f眉r die dieser sogar noch Geld nahm, so kommt sie in Amerika durch die ge盲nderte Philosophie und die Aufbruchsstimmung zu einer neuen Erkenntnis, was der Dialog von Mendel und Deborah klar darlegt.

Der gl盲ubige Lehrer Mendel Singer erlebt zahlreiche Schicksalsschl盲ge in seiner Familie sowohl in Galizien und sp盲ter in Amerika, ger盲t in den Zorn zu Gott, warum er gerade ihm das widerfahren l盲sst. Der gro脽artig zu lesende Roman hat sowohl ein gutes Ende als auch vieles offen bleibt.

Job es un libro hermoso y desgarrador. Sus p谩ginas hablan de lo bello y lo tr谩gico, de la fatiga y la esperanza que tejen nuestro existir; describen con ardor y dramatismo la experiencia de gradual despojamiento de un coraz贸n profundamente religioso, y todo ello destilando autenticidad. Es uno de esos libros que te hace querer conquistar dos de los poderes m谩s nobles a nuestro alcance: el de aceptar nuestro destino y el de conceder el perd贸n. Adem谩s, est谩 magn铆ficamente escrito, con descripciones de personajes y situaciones que se imprimen a fuego en la mente del lector (excelente la traducci贸n de Berta Vias). No es una obra apta para quien busque ligereza o mero entretenimiento. Si le doy s贸lo cuatro estrellas es porque algunos pasajes en los que se relata la triste fortuna del protagonista y, en particular, del peque帽o Menuchim, han generado oc茅anos de melancol铆a... (una peque帽a venganza personal por las molestias ocasionadas). Altamente recomendable.

Si puo' usare il termine capolavoro? Se si, io lo spenderei per questo piccolo grande libro. Il racconto di una vita che in realta' e' il racconto di molte vite, di tutte le vite forse. Di quando ci si sente sopraffatti, ingiustamente puniti dal destino cinico e baro o da dio a seconda di come la si pensi. Adirati quanto piu' si e' convinti di aver vissuto nel giusto. Una prosa pastosa, ricca, damascata ma mai ridondante. Uno stile d'altri tempi che pero' misteriosamente appare formalmente moderno.

*Tengo conocimiento de esta novela desde hace muchos a帽os porque a mi padre se la regal贸 un compa帽ero suyo cuando estaba terminando el liceo.
Siempre estamos conversando sobre libros, y hace unos d铆as, a prop贸sito de libros usados o libros que llegan a nuestras manos por distintas razones, la volvi贸 a mencionar. Y hablaba siempre con cierto cari帽o por la historia y su personaje principal, por lo que me decid铆 a finalmente leerla. Sab铆a absolutamente todo lo que sucedi贸 en ella, de principio a fin, pero jam谩s he tenido problemas con recibir o no spoilers, y de hecho no interes贸, porque termin茅 de leer muy emocionada, me llor茅 todas las 煤ltimas p谩ginas.

Joseph Roth, su autor, de origen jud铆o, se suicid贸 en 1939 , a la entrada de los jud铆os en Francia. No hace falta investigar demasiado, y de hecho basta con interesarse solo un poco por los titulos y rese帽as breves de sus libros para saber que toda su obra est谩 profundamente influenciada y basada en la experiencia jud铆a en el mundo. Job no es la excepci贸n.

El protagonista de la novela es Mendel Singer, un maestro jud铆o que sobrevive apenas en la Rusia zarista con su familia, su esposa y cuatro hijos. El menor de ellos es Menuchim, un ni帽o que ha nacido con serios problemas f铆sicos, motores y probablemente intelectuales. Un doctor en su momento lo declara como epil茅ptico, sin embargo, en ning煤n momento el lector termina de saber cu谩l es, en t茅rminos m茅dicos actuales, qu茅 condici贸n especifica le aqueja.
Es con su nacimiento, que pareciese venir una seguidilla de desgracias para la familia. El matrimonio de los padres se deteriora al punto de que compartir la casa y la cama es solo un detalle, los hijos mayores en cualquier momento ser谩n llamados a servir en el ej茅rcito, y Miriam se est谩 relacionando sentimentalmente con un cosaco ruso, cuesti贸n que en cualquier momento puede saberse y ponerlos a todos en peligro por la propia indiscreci贸n en el comportamiento de la chica.
En una visita repleta de fe que hace la madre a un rabino, este le dice que Menuchim sanar谩, aunque tomar谩 tiempo. A partir de entonces, cada movimiento, gesto y balbuceo ser谩 interpretado como la posibilidad de una recuperaci贸n. Pero, al final del d铆a, dicha mejora no se dar谩 y cada d铆a que pase estar谩 m谩s lejos de cumplirse la promesa del religioso.
Es el comportamiento de la hija que los pone en peligro el que finalmente los obliga a migrar a Estados Unidos, viaje en el que, sin embargo, deben dejar atr谩s a Menuchim. Su condici贸n no es buena, y las dificultades de la traves铆a en barco tambi茅n son muchas.
Con su casa como forma de pago y agradecimiento, Mendel y su esposa dejan a su hijo al cuidado de una familia vecina, con la esperanza de que su recuperaci贸n se efectuara en alg煤n momento pronto, de manera que pudiesen llev谩rselo consigo a Norteam茅rica.
Una vez arribados al nuevo continente, si bien su situaci贸n en principio mejora, al reencontrarse con uno de sus hijos (quien hab铆a desertado) y teniendo una condici贸n econ贸mica favorable, la nostalgia y culpa de no estar junto a Menuchim no abandona a Mendel, y cada vez se aleja m谩s de su familia y ensimisma con sus malas emociones.
En el antiguo testamento, a Job, un hombre recto y bueno, se le somete a un mont贸n de dificultades y desgracias, perdiendo todo menos la f茅 en Dios. De ah铆 surge el nombre de la novela, aunque sucede que a Mendel, un hombre moderno, sucedi茅ndole la muerte y abandono de pr谩cticamente toda su familia, termina por enojarse con Dios. La 煤nica persona que podr铆a salvarlo o hacerle m谩s llevadera esa miseria en la que vive, su hijo Menuchim, est谩 en Rusia y lo m谩s probable es que nunca la vuelva a ver.

Ya me sab铆a la historia completa, tal y como dije en un principio, y eso no evit贸 que terminase llorando al final.
Lo cierto es que no interpreto el reencuentro de Mendel con Menuchim como un milagro. M谩s all谩 de que tuviese una condici贸n muy seria siendo menor, desde las primeras p谩ginas advierte el lector que el ni帽o responde a uno u otro est铆mulo. Posiblemente tambi茅n reconociera en mayor o en gran medida la calma y el amor que le brindaron sus padres, a pesar de lo dif铆cil que les resultase en general la vida. Y m谩s tarde los m茅dicos tambi茅n lo tratan. Por supuesto, la medicina no estaba tan avanzada como lo est谩 hoy en d铆a, pero, fue un conjunto de esfuerzos los que hicieron que el ni帽o mejorara.
A ratos la narraci贸n, incre铆blemente dispuesta y cruda, me dejaba con el coraz贸n en la mano, como cuando el escritor describ铆a el (mal)trato de los hermanos con Menuchim, o las veces en que Mendel llegaba a so帽ar y alucinar con verlo en las calles de Estados Unidos solo por la cantidad de anhelo de volver a verlo y la culpa de dejarlo solo.
El final me emocion贸 much铆simo. Quiz谩 porque creo en esa idea de que a veces una persona, cuando ya est谩 enferma o simplemente es mayor, necesita alcanzar solo una cosa o estar junto a una persona particular para finalmente encontrar la paz y poder irse en paz.
Es un libro muy humano, con independencia de la religi贸n que se profese (o la falta de ella). Est谩 escrito de forma muy sencilla, y su historia es tambi茅n muy simple, con personajes complejos y completos, que puedes o no entender.
Posiblemente, el hecho de que mi padre me hablase de 茅l desde hace a帽os hasta que me motiv贸 a leerlo en solo unos d铆as, hace que me absorban tantas emociones.

Nesta recria莽茫o moderna da hist贸ria b铆blica de J贸, Mendel Singer 茅 um judeu pobre que se v锚 obrigado a emigrar da R煤ssia czarista para os Estados Unidos, e a quem, apesar da f茅 inabal谩vel, tudo de mau parece acontecer, sobretudo depois de conhecer uma felicidade passageira.
Joseph Roth, sem d煤vida um dos melhores autores no que 脿 descri莽茫o do fim da Belle 脡poque concerne, d谩-nos a conhecer o 芒mago de um homem simples, sim, mas pleno de emo莽玫es e pensamentos complexos, um gr茫o que vai sendo triturado na m贸 do acaso e dos desmandos dos poderosos. Solid茫o, desilus茫o, convic莽茫o, honra, medo, amor: no fundo, cabe c谩 tudo. O estilo 茅, como sempre com Roth, l铆mpido, mas n茫o depurado em excesso. Muito recomend谩vel.
