A past unwritten. A shadow fallen. An enemy unmasked.
Time grows short to secure the desert city of Midstream. Fel struck a devastating blow, and it’s only a matter of time until their next attack. Out of options, Jacob turns to the abandoned works of Charles von Atlier to create a Titan Mech. The towering machine may be just the weapon they need to protect the city.
But Mordair’s thirst for power is escalating. As King of Fel he is taking full advantage of his alliance with the kingdom across the sea. Together, they’re preparing a siege on Belldorn sure to split their enemies focus.
Jacob and Alice are placing all their hopes of salvation in the Titan Mech when a terrible discovery in the Red Woods proves even that won’t be enough. Somehow, someway, they must strengthen their defenses. The quest to come will be their riskiest yet as they journey straight into the heart of Fel itself.
Eric R. Asher is the author of over 30 titles, including the Vesik urban fantasy series and the YA steampunk series, Steamborn. Look for his upcoming cozy fantasy, The Theme Park at the End of the World, in 2024. He is currently living in St. Louis, Missouri, where the local folklore often finds its way into his Mason Dixon: Monster Hunter rural fantasy series.
Skyforged by Eric R Asher Steamborn series #5. Steampunk fantasy. Best read in series order. To protect the desert city of Midstream, Jacob is using his tinkering skills to create a Titan Mech, a towering weapon. But it may not be enough against Mordair, the King of Fel. Mary, Alice, Smith and crew are fighting for survival anyway they can.
Enemies, fighting, war, a plethora of bugs and creatures and sand. Sand, dirt and blood. It’s a war and the team is giving their all. I love Jacob and his tinkering. He even becomes a surgeon and medic in this one. Amazing skills. Brutal, bloody, friendships, and a flying steamboat. And it’s not the end yet. The adventure continues next with Skysworn.
I needed to return to a serious world with characters I love and find comforting and this book/series fit the bill. I love Jacob, Alice, Mary, Smith, Gladys, George, and on and on, so very much. This world is serious and while the times are dark and gray, the characters bring a light and remind us that humans and humanity are the reason for so much and worth protecting.
The 5th installment of this series was surprisingly good. I’m not sure if the mood just struck me, or if slowing down the speed to 1.5x made the difference. Regardless, I really liked this one and wonder if I need to reread the others.
In particular, I felt there was a lot of character growth through problem solving and application of previously mentioned content. Likewise, the distant places repeatedly referenced are actually visited. So their appearances and customs, as well as the appearances and customs of those who live there, are provided and influence the story.
We meet new characters (which we do in every book), but I really liked these ones. Also, old characters show that all of us have a past that influences who they are today. In all, I actually need to applaud Asher for roping in so many main characters and giving all of them a purpose.
I’m still going to need a map, with a legend, because characters seem to move so fast between locations that at times cities seem on top of one another, and at other times, they are too far away to offer aid.
________________________________ Skyforged takes up right after Skyborn ends. Mordair, king of Fel is a despicable human being. He has no qualms about killing anyone in his way, including his own people. Fel and Ballern are allies in crushing the other cities. Jacob toils away attempting to build his first Titan mech to help defend Midstream. Mary and the Skysworn fly all over creation to find out what Fel is up to and how to stop them. Between their airships, new innovations from Jacob and hopefully the Dragonwing riders they might be able to withstand Fel's forces. Great story, continuing advancement of Jacob and company, incredible camaraderie really everything you could possibly ask for
All in all I enjoyed the story, but I would love some clarification of how much time has passed since we first met Jacob and Alice in Steamborn. All of the younger characters have far greater maturity and seem several years older than I think they actually are, which detracts from the story a bit. I think I’m going to have that problem throughout the rest of the series. The story is interesting and engaging. I love the steam ships and the bugs. On to book 6 now.
I do not like any action underground! And the BUGS. ugh. It was good to see Jacob, Alice, Smith and Mary, as well as some new characters. There is so much death, destruction and treachery. Alliances are being broken, lies are brought to light and a constant worry of who can you trust. I listened on audible and the narrator is fabulous.
What can I say about this book without giving away key plot points? First, it is absolutely one of the best books I’ve ever had the pleasure to read! Second, all our old friends from the previous books are back along with a few new ones. Third, I want a giant dragonfly to ride of my own.
This series is running into the same issues as other long series. In this book, the characters move from one city to another. The movements act more as filler than a tool to move the story forward. I think this series could be a few books shorter.

I love that these characters don't lose themselves, they really stay true to themselves even during a war. Asher writes such amazing characters, full of compassion and loyalty and with a lot of snark and sass.
This book was very visual and fast paced. Can't wait to see where the next book leads!
