not exactly the most profound of sentiments, but i feel like, if read at the right moment, it really could be quite impactful.![]()
"What do you want to be when you grow up?"They juxtapose it against the wilderness they're fond of staring into. "...the wild," said the mole, "Don't fear it." The mole is a cake-enthusiast. Addict, really. When he brought the boy some cake he ate it. But don't worry, he brought him some more cake. He ate it too, unfortunately.
"Kind," said the boy.
"What do you think success is?" asked the boy.
"To love," said the mole.
"What do you think is the biggest waste of time?"Did that just hit you in the chest as it did me?
"Comparing yourself to others," said the mole.
"I wonder if there is a school of unlearning."
Most of the old moles I know wish they had listened less to their fears and more to their dreams. As they journey together, they meet the fox. The fox who was caught in a snare. The mole rescues him and shortly after they meet the horse. They flitter off to colourful adventure where they constantly rescue each other from small accidents.
"What is the bravest thing you've ever said?" asked the boy.And eventually, the mole experiences some character development. In place of cake, there are hugs. They last longer.
"Help." said the horse
"Is your glass half empty or half full?" asked the mole.I have been doing this exercise where I write down what I'm grateful for each day. And sometimes I forget that I have a lot to be grateful for. I'm enough of a cliche that a children's picture book gave me a kick up the head to just remember.
"I think I'm grateful to have a glass," said the boy.
