Third time’s the charm, right? At least that’s what I tell myself when I witness the same hot guy commit mass murder three times in a few days. I’m either the luckiest mute boy ever or possibly the unluckiest. Who knows, maybe him kidnapping me will turn into the greatest love story ever told? Hey, it could happen! You never know how these things will turn out. I happen to believe in love and soulmates, and if nothing else, Arlington Fox doesn’t treat my disability like a nuisance. It’s not every day you find someone who just gets you, and I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth even if the horse in question is a man so good at killing people that I should probably introspect a bit about why that skews my moral compass and possibly my kinks. But c’mon, competence is sexy, amiright?
The Trouble with Trying to Date a Murderer is an MM Paranormal Romance with lots of sass, humor, a ridiculous 3000 year age-gap, and an inordinate number of tables.
Jennifer Cody lives in Small Midwestern Town, USA, aka the sticks of Kansas. She has three kids and a Beardo she loves. Her sleep schedule is weird, so messages sent at midnight usually get answered relatively promptly. She reads all kinds of mm romance and urban fantasy, but her favorites are gay-for-you, small-town romances and over the top urban fantasy romances. Her own writing doesn’t always reflect her reading preferences, but mostly it does. She writes what she wants to read and reads extensively because she’s an addict. To books, obviously. And caffeine because sleep is for other people.
Picture Alice Winters' "Hitman" series' level of craziness, but with much more liberal use of the brakes -- *before* things go so nonsensical that they're completely off the rails.
Romily was hilarious as the disadvantaged, mute, young man that happened to keep crossing paths with an assassin charged to keep Evil Forces in check for a council of powerful supernatural beings.
I also loved that, although Fox was a stoic Weapon of Vengeance for the good guys, he was also quick to soften in Romily's presence.
Kudos for Fox's boss and his parents, along with the other team's assassin, who Romily "claimed" as his own. No take backs! 🤣
One thing that I found pretty refreshing was how both MC’s were really confident in both themselves and what they wanted.
So there was absolutely none of the Am I worthy or good enough? or How does he really feel about me? internal monologuing that is ALWAYS a staple in almost every single other romance out there. It was nice.
This was a crazy-assed ride and I'm soooooo here for the next book, which is blessedly already out.
4.5 stars, rounding up.

I’m not really sure what I just read. It was utterly bizarre. On one hand we have Alice Winters-like humor (who I’ve stopped reading) at times it’s OTT, sometimes it’s entertaining but this started with no context and insta-love the reader eventually finds out that this world is a paranormal one but literally nothing is explained. We just kind of go along with this very disjointed and lack-of-information plot
Romily is funny and OTT in an endearing way, but we know next to nothing about Fox and since this is all from Romily’s perspective, there isn’t much character development and the relationship has no development it’s straight up Romily declaring Fox is his future husband and that’s it.
Lots of action sequences with new characters with mysterious abilities are they witches? Warlocks? Demons? There is NO CONTEXT.
Also, only a little bit of steam at the very end.
I finished it and it was entertaining at times, but it read like a rough draft from a brand new author. Not sure I’ll be reading more
This is basically John Wick, turned supernatural being, who fights evil and is lambasted by a cute mute that quickly develops a crush and bossily inserts himself into the assassin’s life with little fanfare. Lust is instant, moving into together soon follows, and a pending wedding is a forgone conclusion.
Cheeky, ridiculous, peppered with silly humor that made me chuckle a few times. To say the least, this was over the top entertaining bloody violent fun. You’ve been warned - go forth and enjoy!
This was very cute and funny. I loved Romily, and I liked Fox, I just wish we'd gotten his POV. I do think it could have stood to be just a wee bit shorter. I found myself losing interest toward the end. But I would definitely read more in the series. I want to know about the cherubs and poor Bellamy. He needs someone who appreciates him.
Well now that was absolutely just a fun read. My first by this author and I genuinely enjoyed it.
How to explain this one...
Romily is a mute character as his vocal cords were taken out when he was an infant. Let's just say he has been through some crazy sh*t in his life. So when he encounters a blood bath at a diner he has just been hired at, he shrugs it off like it's no big deal.
Romily is more into the would be assassin who, he declares in his mind, is his future husband. He doesn't believe he will ever see the man again but he is WRONG. They encounter each other two more times after. His would be assassin actually turns out not be an assassin but something more.
Romily finds that the human world has more to it than he thought.
Arlington Fox is 1/4 demon, 1/4 fae, 1/4 human and 1/4 something else you'll have to read the book to find out about 😉😆
Fox is not an assassin but turns out to be a Reaper of sort in his world. He is hired by this place called the depot. He is responsible for helping keep the balance between good and evil. There are so many things attached to the world Fox is from and this book just scratches the surface.
This story is entertaining. I love the relationship between Romily and Fox. I look forward to more. Like...I want the next book now! lol
*ARC provided by author, this is my honest review.*
I was super confused when I started this, because things like this happened:
About four applications later, a streak of blood spatter hits my screen, startling the fuck out of me. I rip my headphones off and turn in my chair just in time for a dismembered arm to come flying at me. The thing lands in my lap as my eyes go buggy at the absolute carnage behind me. It’s not as bad as the diner, but I don’t think the library is going to be able to afford the clean up.
Euuhh wait what?? This guy walks into the library to find a job and he sees a man murdering people and he is simply mad because the dismembered arm leaves blood on his shirt??
Even though I had no idea what was going on I fell in love with Romily immediately. He was just awesome. The way he saw the world was so much fun.
I roll my eyes at the guy and point to my ruined clothes. He glances down at them, and I raise my fingers, rubbing them together to indicate he owes me money for a new outfit. He doesn’t, and I let my amused smirk speak for itself. My teasing earns me a small smile before he stalks over to me and hands me another hundred-dollar bill. I give him a bright smile and that’s it. He grabs a book off the floor, shakes the blood off it, and leaves. Damn that man is fine.
Romily is a mute young man who had his vocal cords removed by his father, the cult leader. Yes, it is just as ridiculous as it sounds. He can’t talk, but he sure knows how to ‘talk to people with his whole body and attitude.
When he sees a man going on a murder spree (twice) he can’t get the man out of his head.
Turns out there is a whole paranormal world out there and Fox, the murdering psycho, is a reaper, sent out to kill bad men. The reason Romily can see through the glamor isn’t quite explained, but I think you just need to go with the flow in this book.
Who cares if it makes sense? This book is fun, so much fun. Go read it.
If you’re a fan of Alice Winters writing (especially Hitman’s Guide), you’ll probably love this. It was a wee bit violent but FUNNY and full of action. I laughed and highlighted throughout. I can’t wait for more!
Okay so I loved this the first time round (just as much this time as well) and I’m finally ready to try the second book. The lacklustre reviews have been putting me off but it’s time. Wish me luck 🤞🏻
Original review.
In a word - Crazy
More than one word - Absolutely crazy
This is definitely a love it or hate it kinda book. If you’d have asked me several years ago if I liked crazy my answer would have been a resounding no. But I would have been wrong. I’ve recently found out I love crazy. The Hitman’s Guide books are (in my opinion) the funniest books ever written. It was on Alice Winters thread I came across a recommendation for this book.
It’s a crazy bizarre book made even more so because we have no context.
It’s like John Wick on steroids.
Here’s the first paragraph (or most of it) to give you an idea.
Ok, it happened last Thursday at the diner where I’d worked for all of thirty minutes before a man wearing shit kickers, a black A-shirt, yoga pants, and like a hundred pounds of guns and ammo came into the diner and called out, “Steak and eggs, scrambled with sourdough, and a black coffee. The man didn’t even sit, he just announced his order. And then all hell broke loose. Every patron in the diner started attacking him with bullets and knives and their bodies. All the man wanted was some breakfast and suddenly all the other customers wanted him dead. I watched in absolute horror with my back pressed up against the wall as the man shredded every person in the diner.
So you have to just go with it. Things are explained and it all makes sense (well more or less, maybe with the emphasis on the less) but it’s a fun entertaining ride. I adored Romily along with Fox, Bellamy and everyone else.
This was unlike many books I have read and thats where the book strength is for me. I read a lot of books and I always appreciate books that bring a new flavour to the table, which this one did and I really appreciated it.
Brief summary Romily is mute and he is working at a diner and a man named Fox comes in and murders every one in the diner and Romily falls in love with him at that moment. They keep spending time together and fall in love from there.
This book is super sweet and I really enjoyed the relationship between Fox and Romily, it was damn lovely and the world building was lovely too and it was so fun to read. But I mostly want to talk about the ambiance of this book because it was just the best to me. Self depreciating and dry humour is my favourite type of humour of all time and thats all the humour in this book and it’s used a lot, so I really loved that part of the book. It just really worked for me. Some of my favourite movies are dark humour horror comedies and this book read exactly like one of those mixed with a romantic romantic, which is somehow a match that really worked for me and thats why the book really worked for me. It’s kind of an acquired taste and it’s not a type of humour that will work for everyone, but it was definitely my style. This book was so fast paced that it read like one of those movies I love, so the book really worked for me because of that.
I had so much fun reading this book and i’m really excited to read the next books in the series.
I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest opinion
This book might’ve worked as a short prompt but as a full length book it simply didn’t work. A story needs a structure, a coherent direction and at least some kind of intent from the author, no matter the genre. Simply jumping from one random thing to another does not make a story. The humour in this book was alright at the beginning but when coupled with an aimless plot and rambling story, it just became too much at one point because there’s literally nothing interesting going on in the story in the background to help dull the realisation that this book banks on the characters sassiness and nothing else to progress. There wasn’t even anything romantic; the main characters deciding they were each other’s husbands within the first three chapters isn’t romance lol. Not the type of book I enjoy reading at all.
I’m just bored. Too much stuff is happening and I’m not really getting any of it. Have to be in a very specific mood to enjoy this type of comedic writing and I’m not feeling it right now. Might come back and finish this later on.
I did have fun reading this book. If you enjoy over-the-top situations, a slapstick style story where everyone falls in line with the charming, wise-cracking protagonist (similar in style to Alice Winters' Hitman books but paranormal) you'll want to pick this up. BUT, you will have to be able ignore the lack of world-building and context for what is going on, where it is happening, and just get on the ride. (The author did comment on my update about this and intends to reveal more in future installments /user_status...) I don't need to know every detail about everything, but we weren't even given the most basic information. I sometimes felt like I was dropped into a story where I forgot to read the prequel.
I get that we are experiencing the story solely from Romily's POV and have no issues with learning things as he does, but he doesn't seem to be all that concerned about all the shit going down around him. Is this ordinary for the world he is in? Probably not since he does question it himself later in the book, but much like the reader he is sort of just going with the flow, completely enamored with Fox aka his future husband. There is instalove all around but the sex is going to have to wait until the third date, which may or may not ever happen as these two are quite busy dispatching evil. The characters move from one assignment to the next, Romily learning as he goes and picking up new friends and family and bits of knowledge as he goes. There is an underlying mystery, good/evil battle, to be continued in the next book too.
The characters are quirky and charming and are a mix of interesting beings. I enjoyed Romily's romance reading - it's prepared him to know that mpreg is a thing he must be on the lookout for here - and to some extent, I was okay with his just go with it attitude, but I would have liked to know why the Harbinger is needed to announce Fox's Reaper arrival.
So yes, I enjoyed this story but I would have enjoyed it a lot more had I been a bit more informed as to the most basic what, why and where. I will be reading the next story and really hoping that the author provides a clearer picture.
This book was very different. I wish I remember who I saw post about it but I basically saw it on Tiktok and immediately checked it out.
It’s not really a romance novel. Like, not a classic “romance novel. There is romance. There is a HFN (it’s going to be a series narrated by the same hero). But it wasn’t a “romance novel.
It’s kind of like a quirky urban fantasy in a world where the rules and set up keeps getting slowly unwrapped. I mean I thought it was a contemporary book with a psycho hero it is not. Hiding this if you want to go into the book blind but if you want to know what kind of world it is:
The narrator and hero Romily is mute - his vocal cords were removed when he was an infant. I liked that everyone around him instantly accepted this - no talk of “fixing him or that it was a pain to need to communicate via text. Every single person saw him for who he was and didn’t limit him by his disability. So I loved that piece.
Even the world, one I realized what it was, was really interesting. I’ll probably continue with the series - it’s basically Romily and his boo-thang, a Reaper, solving crimes and saving the world. It felt a little like an episodic TV show or A Series of Unfortunate Events (I don’t know, it was the first series that came to mind!).
I laugh and press my face into the crook of his neck, blindly typing out my next message. I ducking love you. Eh. Autocorrect got it mostly right.
Pretty low angst. The other hero is not a psycho MC - it's literally his job to murder people. CW for on page violence/ torture/ murder, and a guy who's got sex magic who forces the hero to come against his will (untouched). FYI, very light steam. Maybe more in future books.
Audio: 3 stars for Kevin Earlywine. I didn’t love his narration it kinda worked for this book, but it was not great. I did like his Fox’s voice but not many of his other voices, especially the girl voices.
Book: idk how to rate this
Well idk what the fuck I just read. It started as a car accident does with a bang, and didn’t change from there. And like with any car accident you can’t look away, and that is what happened.
Idk if I will continue the story but it was entertaining but also boring? Haha idk what to feel about this one. Felt a little juvenile, and while it has been compared to Alice Winters OTT humor I don’t see it.
Overall an interesting read and not much else to say without spoiling it.
Romily tells how he meets his future husband while he kills a lot of people.
The man spins, immediately spotting and completely disregarding me. I mean, I don’t blame him. I’m not all that memorable, but still. My hopeful, little, romantic heart gives a twinge at being so easily forgotten. Ouch, Future Husband. Ouch. 😳
After the third chance encounter, Fox makes him his Harbinger. No we don't ask any questions, no we don't really get anything explained. A world of mystical figures opens up, who live alongside the humans quite normally and they don't notice anything. Since Romily decides to understand things for himself and only allows others less explanation, we hardly get a clue as to what the heck is going on here.
But the narrative style is so good that I couldn't put the book down, even if it is incredibly frustrating that you understand so little. And Romily and Fox are super adorable together and with each other.
I have a chubby from seeing my man murder people so efficiently. In a church. God, if ever there was a time for a deity to smite me with lightning 😳
“Diamonds. Cufflinks, pocket watch, tie pin, collar chain, pocket brooch, and engagement ring. Fox gives me a level look. “The ring is for later. Of course it is; that does not stop me from jumping into his arms and kissing the ever-loving shit out of him. I love it when the important people get on board with my plans. 🫠
Still, there is a lack of depth. You probably need to read more of this series to understand it as a whole ... Maybe another time, I think you have to be in a very special mood to really enjoy these books.
This book has Leland vibes, they even adopted a whole person, who’s a red head. Difference is: one of them is the assassin and the other is the sassy little psycho🤣🤣 and the banter and shenanigans are an acceptable amount! If you like ’The Hitman’s Guide, you might enjoy this.
I didn’t realize when I started reading that it was a fantasy book, it was a very nice surprise. I had fun reading about the different creatures and their crazy world, and the ’immortals concept is INGENIOUS!!!! Terrifying to be honest, but very interesting.
A hilarious read, with wonderful main/side characters and I enjoyed it a lot. Not so much the bad puns and the talking to me ‘the reader. Also, I normally AVOID instalove, but weirdly enough, I didn’t mind it here at all, had a bit of slow burn vibes. I approve the relationship boundaries they made and the open communication from the start, even though Romily is mute, I like that. Also, Bellamy needs a happy ending!!!!!
Quote that left an impression: “My head spins toward him so fast, my brain bangs against my skull. what an image!!
I first read this over 2 years ago, and further down the series I haven't always loved the books the same. So while it loses a star for me after the audio, I stand by a lot of what I said in my original review. Also, athame was pronounced wrong throughout, which bugged me. Fresh and Fun. Cody had me laughing throughout the whole book. It was impossible for me not to love Romilly from the first page, he gave me Leland lite vibes and I loved it. The action was fast paced with just enough world building to keep me interested, but not too much that I felt overwhelmed. It's more of a slow burn with the physical side of their relationship but Romilly and Fox are super sweet. The barrier of Romilly being mute doesn't affect their relationship all. There's a couple of side characters I'm interested in but really, I could read several books about Romilly and Fox with no issues of getting bored. The ending is a tad abrupt, a tease of more adventures, so it's a HFN. Told in single pov
If you ever wanted something like Alice Winters' Hitman but also with the fae and paranormal elements, then you've gotta give this book a try!
Absolutely hilarious! Romily is such chaotic good, I just adore him. I wish maybe we had gotten some POV from Fox, but overall this was just a delightful, crazy, hilarious book and I need more!
This is quite the OTT, wild ride. And while that was entertaining for the first bit, maintaining that same note throughout got exhausting. And all that’s happening is the same head-flying scenes over and over. I’m not typically one for dual POVs, but this almost needed that to break up Romily’s nonsense.
If I were to take it apart and examine individual components, such as world-building, character development, plot etc., none of it should work, yet it does. I don’t know what I just read. I somehow ended up really liking it though.
Okay, quick thoughts! This book is absolutely hilarious. Romily is mute and keeps ending up as a bystander to mass murders UGH so much blood on his clothes, you know? At least these latest ones have been committed by Romily's Future-Husband who he has never actually interacted with before, but our boy Romily isn't going to let that stop him from claiming this super confident and competent man. After the third mass murder (in just 2 days) Romily takes his Future Husband, aka Fox, home. oh, and informs him that one day they will get married which Fox just rolls with because he is absolutely perfect for Romily.
Does this sounds ridiculous to you? It is. It absolutely is. And it is fabulous IF this is your kind of humor. It isn't super serious and most of the action scenes turn into Romily gushing over how amazing Fox is or Romily gets bored waiting for Fox to finish and starts reading. I friggin' love Romily. He knows what he wants and he goes for it. He's essentially homeless and has no vocal chords, but he snags himself the best man and will do almost anything for that bling. Diamonds and fancy clothing all the way! BUT he is still respectful (in his own way) and wants his relationship to be done right as a way to show Fox he cherishes him. Like, son-- you met him like yesterday??? How are you so amazing in this relationship already and why do I love this pairing so much? So yes, insta-love, but the way the humor goes, I was all for it.
Also found family?? More like created and claimed family. Someone is called Daddy, someone is adopted, and Romily meets his Father-in-laws-to-be. Oh oh and mpreg is a thing in this world so real babies might be in the future. I say real babies only because they won't be cherubs which there are a ton of in this book and they are adorable. I'm waiting for Romily to claim one.
...this really was meant to be a short review, but here we are, so I better wrap this up. If you like ridiculous humor, nonchalant murders and limbs flying in the air, and a sweet romance with supernaturals (omg I didn't even talk about what the story is even about!!) then I think you'll enjoy this book. Seriously, don't take it serious. Read this for puns, the laughs, a huge positive mood boost.
100% will read the next book and I'm SO looking forward to it. Will DEFINITELY be reading other books by this author!!
This was so much fun and I'm in awe of the world this new to me author is building. I loved Romily from the very first page and by the end of the book I loved basically every character in the book. I need more. ASAP.
Jennifer Cody is not only hysterically funny, but she is also an incredibly talented Author. Her worldbuilding skills and imagination are extraordinary, and her books reel you in to the point that her creatures and humans and ideas seem perfectly legit. Which brings us to Fox and Romily. This blodsplattered romp of a paranormal romance will have you howling with laughter as you turn the pages. I'm not going to reveal more of the plot, because you just need to read it yourself. And you will love it. Promise. And yes, the age gap is seriously ridiculous, but there you have it. Five hysterical ridiculously lovely stars from me.
I loved this book so much!! I enjoyed Romily’s internal dialogue so much!! I know that is the second time I used that phrase but what can I say? The cohesiveness of his and Fox’s relationship was that of fated mates. I was also surprised by the paranormal aspect of the book. I hate that I didn’t read her other books 1st but glad that I read this one.
DNF at 47% I truly don’t get it. Explaining this in one word? Boring!! Nothing really happened here. Romily took a job a monkey could have done just as good and the concept of a killer who is only killing bad guys is tiring. Romily had such a terrible life experiences but came out of it without any mental issues, he was more concerned with getting his clothes dirty than committing to a man that isn’t really a man who does nothing but killing people. Fox? I don’t even understand what makes him tick since he doesn’t even talk. I love fantasy books but the world and characters needs to make sense.

A ridiculous read.. I can not believe I actually paid for this book and finished it...at 45% I just started to skim to see what was going to happen and it was ridiculous and chaotic ..Kudos to those that "LOVED" it...I'm assuming they are mostly ARC readers...this could have been a great novella with better editing perhaps, maybe? but I doubt it ...seemed a bit like slapstick and let's fling it against the wall and see if sticks..and, maybe it's just me, but the whole jock/nerd mock was not endearing in the least....one and done!
Wasn’t sure what to expect, but it looked fun and shiny, the contact names snagged me. Didn’t disappoint. This was like Alice Winter’s Leland and Hitman’s wife’s bodyguard. It was nuts and I loved it. I liked how straight forward Romily was and just how smooth he and Fox were as a couple. The harbinger and reaper thing was cool, the mute decree part making more sense. Favorite part though was the addition of Bellamy and it just went crazy from there. I liked Darcy but didn’t like him for the whole Bellamy crush thing. Looking forward to the next one. Great fun.
