Romily: You know what I’d like to know? Where the hell my romantic, how-we-got-engaged story is. Am I going to get it any time soon? Where is my bigass diamond?
Unfortunately, all that relationship angst gets put on hold when my beloved son, Bellamy, is abducted by a werewolf-ish person I kinda like. Am I going to get my kid back? You betcha. The question is, how many people does Fox have to kill first?
The Trouble With Trying to Save an Assassin is the second book in the Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees Series. It's a 60k word M/M Paranormal Romance with plenty of sass, gore, and questionable decision-making skills, and now there are tiny tables too.
Jennifer Cody lives in Small Midwestern Town, USA, aka the sticks of Kansas. She has three kids and a Beardo she loves. Her sleep schedule is weird, so messages sent at midnight usually get answered relatively promptly. She reads all kinds of mm romance and urban fantasy, but her favorites are gay-for-you, small-town romances and over the top urban fantasy romances. Her own writing doesn’t always reflect her reading preferences, but mostly it does. She writes what she wants to read and reads extensively because she’s an addict. To books, obviously. And caffeine because sleep is for other people.
I liked the first one better. The *handclap* and other typed out emojis got old fast, as did the whole narrator talking to the reader thing. I can't remember if it was like that in the first book, but it was pretty annoying in this book. Plus the plot wasn't wrapped up at all and we never find out why Bellamy was taken, who did it, for what purpose, or why cherubs keep showing up in the books. The ending was way too rushed and I'm just left wondering why I even bothered to read this book. I didn't realize until the end of this book's afterword that this author writes the truly terrible Diviner's Game series, so I suppose the iffy quality of this book makes a lot more sense now.
I enjoyed book 1, it was fun. However... this book crossed the line from fun ridiculous to just ridiculous. Romily went from funny to annoying and everything that happened was just so convenient huh? In the end things got resolved way to easily but that wasn't what ruined the book for me. The moment Bellamy Also, the whole engagement ring thing... are we ever going to find out what's going on there? It was mentioned a lot but there in no explanation soooo... what was the point?
I'm disappointed in this book. There's more setup to the rest of the series than plot. Not only that, but it tried to be funny yet fell flat. There are many references to "read the previous book" and it was trying to break the fourth wall cleverly but was instead just frustrating. I loved the first book so this one was so disappointing.
I was so looking forward to this one. I absolutely loved the first book so when I saw that the second book was out I dropped all my current books and went with this one.
But I while I loved the slight confusion I had in the first book because the magic in this world is just crazy, this book can only described as one big mess.
I had a really hard time following along and there were several moment where I wasn’t sure who was doing what and why.
And if I have one thing I hate, it’s sex at inappropriate times. Here they explained it by saying they had to rest and recharge before rescuing Bellamy, but the sex scene that followed was completely out of place if you ask me.
While I can like a little craziness in my books, I don’t like it when the writing is so convoluted it pulls me out of the story. I had to read several paragraphs again simply to understand what was going on and who was doing what.
I still loved Fox and of course Romily, but sometimes the author took things too far. They ‘adopted Bellamy into their crazy little family and that resulted in some funny moments (since Bellamy is 35 and at least a decade older than Romily), but to have Fox accidentally send a dick pic (while just having orgasmed) to their group chat wasn’t that funny to me. It felt weird since I like the sex in my books to be a bit more private. Sending dick pics to family members is a big no for me.
The next book is about Edovard, who I couldn’t get a feel for at all. So I might just have to accept that the first book was it for me and quit now
OH. MY. GOD. PLEASE TELL ME BELLAMY’S BOOK IS OUT?????!!!!!!!!!!!! AND THE THIEF 👀
Breaking the fourth wall harder and harder! This is super annoying, stop telling me to read the first book. More than once. Just assume I did and get on with it!!!!!! And explaining why you’re allowed to make up dumb words!!! Stars dropped for this reason alone, otherwise the book is great. And all the characters are lovable! ..okay, asking for Arthur/Merlin book recs, via Romily’s narration? Kinda made me laugh🤦🏻♀.
Their relationship is GOALS, they are super supportive in big and small ridiculous ways, and always there for Bellamy ‘the son’🤣 (Romily is 22, Fox is 3600 and their son Bellamy is 35)😩😂
The👏freakin👏text👏groups👏 I love it!!!!
I put the fourth star back because of the ‘Immortal Kroner scene, damn😭😍 and for Edovard, so precious!!!!!!
I received an ARC and leave this review voluntarily.
I really liked the first one. I could deal with Romily's OTTness. There was a good balance of that and being able to follow the plot. This followup felt like a mess to me. A LOT of this story is Romily focusing on where his engagement ring is... which is annoying (8weeks into a relationship that is apparently immortal). And I get it, he's mute and can't speak... but his inner musings, tangents, and everything else is borderline OBNOXIOUS in this one.
I could barely figure out what was going on. We spent most of out time chasing down Bellamy who was stolen. I'm not a fan of bridge books... there was more set up of later books than following any sort of path with this one... like Desolation of Smaug (2nd Hobbit movie) there was barely enough meat here to piece together a story.
The whole breaking the 4th dimension fell flat for me too. I felt that it was overused and became tiresome instead of reading as clever.
I'm invested in the series at this point and curious enough to read the next one just to figure out WHAT IN THE WORLD is going on.
Just my opinion, and it's perfectly fine if you don't see it the same way!
Sometimes when reading a second book in a series it feels like the first one was written just for fun with no intention of more but popularity demands a continuation, and unfortunately, this is one of those books imo.
The Happy: - it’s great to see the family bonding and how much they love each other - Belamy's issue and its cause are fascinating and also wtf? shouldn't there be a memo? - the hedge witch tribe - the antagonists and foreshadowed trouble
The Unhappy: - Romily’s humor and fourth wall breaking are a bit try-hard at times - there are so many responses to complaints/criticisms(?) about the first book that it’s hard not to feel like I’m hearing the author’s voice instead of Romily’s. - The action is still OTT but I couldn’t fall into the fun like with the first one - while doing kitchen sink pnr means you can technically get away with more craziness/convenient magic, it can become a bit much after awhile. - that setup for the next couple? *eyerolling face* *side eye face* *stop sign*
The Trouble With Trying to Save an Assassin follows on from book 1 and a companion novella. Read those first.
If you've read book 1 and enjoyed it, then you will likely love this as it is more of the same humor, perhaps a little toned down since Romilly is used to things.
There's more worldbuilding as each character settles into their new roles.
Please make sure you read the novella too. It's available on amazon or for free by subscribing to Jennifer Cody's newsletter. It's a quick read from Fox's pov and adds some needed context.
There's so much action and steam that I'm going to be processing it for a while. I might even re-read it soon. Poor Bellamy though. I adore the family that Romilly is building.
I love how Romilly breaks the 4th wall and speaks to the reader. It fits his character well. He's quickly becoming one of my favourite characters and I can't wait to see where this series goes.
His connection with Fox is fantastic. Those two are couple goals because they instinctively know what the other needs. They are so sweet together.
I laughed a lot during this and really can't wait for more.
If you remember my review of the first book, y'all know I loved it, even if nothing was explained. In this one, we got an actual story that made sense, but it took me almost a month to finish it. The first half was a slog, but once I got there, it got much better.
This time Romily narrates with more detail but adds insults to the reader along the way. I mean, these reader slaps are not subtle at all. Yes, the first book did end on a cliffhanger, yes the story made no sense, and yes the romance made little sense. And that is all ok, I still enjoyed it. I did not enjoy being told I read a story wrong.
I will continue this series, cause I am all in, but I'd rather not be getting snide remarks in the next one.
Could Romily get any more ridiculous? Why yes, yes he could!
My new favorite threesome were getting along quite nicely for the most part. Romily was still waiting for his engagement ring, Fox was still killing those who needed killing, and Bellamy had come to accept that these two men this strange couple were now his people.
Then Bellamy gets kidnapped and all hell breaks loose.
There’s a burning man, an assassin who can’t really be killed, the four dads, a messed up council, some intriguing inner workings for the paranormal world these characters are occupying, and a lot of tomfoolery going on.
Once again, I had a blast reading this. This author is a definite must-buy for me from now on. There was a delicate balance between the humor and the awesomeness and not once did it get overly ridiculous or OTT for me. I enjoyed every bit of it and I’m waiting for Romily to get his diamond!!
An entertaining read. You still get Romily and his sass. Fox and Romily love. All the dads! There is Bellamy, who I adore, who goes through quite a bit in this one. A new adopted son/pup, Edvorad. He is so oblivious and adorable.
Someone has broken Bellamy's wards. It appears nutmeg is the culprit but who has given enough to Bellamy to poison the magic keeping his wards in place? Romily is not happy about this as he does not want any harm to come to his newly adopted son. Fox, Bellamy and Romily set off on a mission to get Bellamy's wards put back in place. However, during the trip Bellamy is taken by a Luna Wolf. This leaves Fox and Romily on a mission to rescue him.
I enjoyed this book. I don't know but there is just something about them that gets me. It could probably be Romily and his personality. The loving family he has created or jus the world the author is building. Honestly, the new species that show up and what they are capable of excites me as much it does Romily lol. I know the author describes this series as John Wick(ish) but gay. I never seen that movie so I will go with one I am familiar with such as Kill Bill. A movie I love. It is so campy, bloody, silly and a bit OTT yet so entertaining. This rings true with this book. I'm just a fan of it all. Well maybe still not a fan of the endings😆 Anyways, I can't wait to see where the author takes this series.
*ARC provided by author, this is my honest review.*
When I read Book 1 of this series, I really enjoyed Romily's thoughts and sassy humor. It fit in well with him discovering the supernatural world was real and the mystery that the book covered. But this one the humor felt different. Romily's sassiness just became annoying and the introduction of new characters and a new "son" was over the top. He seemed to talk to the reader a lot and made mention of reading the previous book. It just felt a little cutesy.
I was slightly annoyed with the engagement ring issue. I think it really bothered Romily and whenever he would ask, Fox would distract him with sex. There was something that Fox needed to tell him about the ring, but he would rather distract his future husband than talk about it. Bellamy knew what it was, but Fox wouldn't confess to Romily. I don't know, it just made me uncomfortable. Then add in how every interaction needed to be joked about with "Daddy" and Fox's parents and I was just kinda over my limit.
I will probably read the next one because it will be told from a different character's perspective and I still am interested in these characters. But I am a little bummed that I didn't love this one as much as the first.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review
I love this series. It's so funny and adorable and so full of fluff. I actually laughed out loud multiple times while reading it. Romily is just the greatest and I adore him. The found family and the dynamic in the family are so cute. I'm 2 years older than Bellamy and I totally want to kickass fathers to love and care for me, even if they are a dozen or so years younger than me.
The only reason this book wasn't a 5-star is that it did have its slow parts. Also while I don't mind spice in my books at all, there was one scene that I just can't with. Super gross in my opinion, but I get real queasy with bodily fluids.
I cannot begin to express how five stars are not enough
I’m currently on that lovely hyper, buzzing, manic book high you get when you finish a truly awesome book. This has to be one of my all time, absolute favourite series (and it earned that title from book one alone). Trouble 2 was just so much perfection stuffed into a a single book that I am borderline speechless. We got to see all our favourite Foxilys (plus Santanos who I have a weird soft spot for - no judging, I am complex and am allowed to like the baddies as much as the goodies). This book is a bit more of a ride emotionally but in a very good way. I am a cryer with books (we’re talking ugly crying here with little to no prompting) and I only cried twice and it didn’t even get ugly. Trouble 2 managed to pack a big emotional punch whilst making me laugh and squee. The found family vibes on this one were even stronger than Trouble 1 which I absolutely adored. I am a sucker for found family and this delivered in a big, big way. There’s a certain kind of soul deep calm that I feel when reading books that are heavy on the found family and I had it in spades reading this. These characters love each other with an honesty that is quirky and silly and blindingly beautiful.
If you haven’t read Trouble 1, you should because you have been missing out on something truly awesome (plus you can’t read Trouble 2 without reading Trouble 1 and I promise you, you need to read Trouble 2; you will thank me later).
This one was probably the one I was looking forward to most for July. Poor Bellamy. Romily and Fox were pretty much the same, apart from Romily felt more over the top and settled into his role, at times it did get a bit much. I'm curious what did happen to the ring. I need to know who DB Cooper is. The new child's attachment was a surprise and I'm looking forward to see him fall hard.

Well let me say Jennifer is such a talent Author the way she has written this series is amazing. I was hooked from the start, i just love Romily's narrative. The characters are brilliant and world building fantastic, I already want book 3.
* if you haven't read book 1 - The Trouble with Trying to Date a Murderer or book 1.5 Fox Recruits a Mute Boy (And Falls in Love) i suggest you start with them 🥰
I absolutely loved this story. If I could I would have given this way more than 5 stars. First this is not a stand-alone. This is the continuation of Romily’s story. This was so good. The world building is fantastic and the characters are so awesome. I literally could not put this down and I would have loved to have just kept reading more. I can’t wait for the next story.
I absolutely enjoyed the first book, and was so looking forward to this one. But this one wasn't nearly as enjoyable. I honestly felt like Romilly was just way too much to deal with. He's bordering on obnoxious, rather than snarky and fun. I know lots of people will read this book and absolutely enjoy it, but it just rubbed me the wrong way I guess. With all that being said, don't take my opinion and make it your own, read the darn book and establish your own.
Man, do I love this series. Romily is a freaking delight, as are many other characters we meet along the way. I pretty much laughed my way through this and can’t wait for more!
I just want to say that I have never adored a character before, at least I don't remember one that would fit into the adoration category for me. Romily is like the best thing ever🥰. I just love everything about him. I can't get enough of him, lol. While reading this I can say that a smile was on my face nearly the entire time just from the sheer joy of this charming, charismatic character. Honestly I love all of the characters and how perfect they all fit together, but Romily just takes the cake, I can't help it, lol. Trouble 2 was definitely a super nice palette cleanser. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot that happens and I can't wait for the next book. I nearly wrote out a spoiler, well I did, but I erased it realizing that it was one and was from the excerpt for book 3🤦♀. Just want to add that I've become a super recent fan of Jennifer. Book One, The Trouble With Trying to Date a Murder, was my first read and that led me down the rabbit hole of all that is Jennifer Cody, lol. I would give this more than 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 if I could just because of how this book makes me feel reading it. I can't explain why and you probably think I'm crazy, lol. Just give this a read for yourself. It's awesome 👌 👏 👍
So Romily and Fox are taking Bellamy to get his wards fixed. On their time off they get a text about a case in California and no amount of arguing that they are on vacation will get them out of the contract. Soon they are off on a sanctioned murder spree. Along the way they pick up a sweet, innocent and shy newcomer that believes he's been kidnapped. When they explain to Edovard that he isn't being kidnapped and can leave if he wants or stay part of their family, he decides to stay. Just when things look like they're getting back to their normal, Bellamy is taken and they have to find him fast. Fox calls on the council and performs a ritual to protect Bellamy until they can find him. Darcy is back to help which Romily and Fox aren't happy about but they'll do whatever they have to to get Bellamy back. Sugar Daddy, Fox's fathers, Santanos and more are back to help however they can. The cherubs are back and we find they aren't always the nice little babies they appear to be. Will they get to Bellamy in time?
This is a really good story that had me hooked from page one. The chemistry between the characters and the story is great. I was laughing so much that my sides hurt. I didn't want the story to end. I'm really looking forward to Edovard narrating the next installment. His innocence is a breath of fresh air.
Hm... i just don't know this time. It was still very funny, i chuckled a lot at some scenes, but also it was ultra chaotic - more chaotic than vol 1, and not in a good way this time. I don't know if I just wasn't in the mood for some more gag-gayness, but it just wasn't as fun as the first one and I can't say why. Still, if you like comedy, this one is still very funny (especially if u like the deadpool comedy, like breaking the 4th wall and being meta), but also very all over the place :/ I kinda was a bit sad, that it hadn't the same impact like vol 1. But welp. it is how it is. I will continue the series, but.. not now.
This was hilarious and anguishing at the same time! Romily is one of the most unique characters and I love his found family. What happened to Bellamy was atrocious and I could feel the rage his family had at his ordeal. I am so looking forward to the rest of the series!!!
(I know I could find flaws and issues but I've decided not to. It's good having a book that's chock full of people showing accepting and love for their family and I don't care to look for anything that's not ideal.)
Romily is up to it again, and he had me laughing along the way. He has settled well into his life as Harbinger, and he keeps ending up saving people/drawing them into his family. This is a fun series with lots of snark.
The Trouble With Trying to Save an Assassin is the follow-up to The Trouble with Trying to Date a Murderer and Fox Recruits a Mute Boy [And Falls in Love]. Those two should be read first before diving into this story.
This was a fun, action-filled story that also involved some darker scenes with an easy enough plot to follow as well as a couple of sexy moments between Fox and Romilly. This has a good number of funny sections and a well placed emotional moment as well. The humor might not be for everyone and for some it might take a certain mood to really get into it, but when it clicks - it just clicks.
The found family vibes was still quite strong in this one and that definitely shone throughout. The characters are quirky, silly and definitely fit the various character tropes one often see in most stories. Most of those were exaggerated but definitely worked well with the style of storytelling involved.
If you loved the first book, I definitely recommend reading this as well.
This would be a 4 stars out of 5 stars.
I received an ARC of this book and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.
