Marcel Proust

Marcel Proust was a French novelist, best known for his 3000 page masterpiece 脌 la recherche du temps perdu (Remembrance of Things Past or In Search of Lost Time), a pseudo-autobiographical novel told mostly in a stream-of-consciousness style.

Born in the first year of the Third Republic, the young Marcel, like his narrator, was a delicate child from a bourgeois family. He was active in Parisian high society during the 80s and 90s, welcomed in the most fashionable and exclusive salons of his day. However, his position there was also one of an outsider, due to his Jewishness and homosexuality. Towards the end of 1890s Proust began to withdraw more and more from society, and although he was never entirely reclusive, as is sometimes made out, he lapsed more completely into his lifelong tendency to sleep during the day and work at night. He was also plagued with severe asthma, which had troubled him intermittently since childhood, and a terror of his own death, especially in case it should come before his novel had been completed. The first volume, after some difficulty finding a publisher, came out in 1913, and Proust continued to work with an almost inhuman dedication on his masterpiece right up until his death in 1922, at the age of 51.

Today he is widely recognized as one of the greatest authors of the 20th Century, and 脌 la recherche du temps perdu as one of the most dazzling and significant works of literature to be written in modern times.

[Original review, Sep 13 2022]

I've been spending a lot of time this year trying to develop ways to build multimodal LARA documents automatically out of public domain internet resources. In principle, as Not told me a while ago, it should be easy. For many classic works of literature, everything you need is already there: the original text, a good English translation, and a high-quality audiobook. You just need to pull them apart and then put the pieces back together again so that the text, audio and translations line up. Surely there can't be much to it?

Not's intuition was spot on, though the details have taken a while to work out and still need considerable tidying up. Basically, my recipe goes like this. You start with the audio and cut it into pieces at silences using the tool. You then take the pieces of audio and send them for processing by . This is far from 100% accurate, but it's good enough that you can write a script which aligns the speech recognition results against the text of the book and matches them quite reliably. Next, you take the source text and the translation, and send them for processing at the site; this cuts the two texts into roughly sentence-length chunks in a way which matches corresponding passages.

The problem is that the two alignments, source/audio and source/target, are not consistent with each other, since silences and sentence-breaks are not at all the same thing. In general, a sentence contains many silences comparable in length to the ones you get at periods. However, the aligments agree well enough that you can in practice take the places where they do agree and use those to create a consistent alignment. Most often, this means that a sentence found by YouAlign corresponds to several silence-delimited audio segments, though sometimes you need more than one YouAlign segment for it to work. For each combined segment, you stick togther all the relevant audio chunks and all the relevant translation chunks, and you're there. There is slightly more to it than the above, but basically it is indeed quite simple: it works because the core resources, Google Cloud Speech to Text and YouAlign, are very good, and you just have to find a way to exploit that power.

Proust's Combray is my first full-scale test of the idea. The original French text and the Scott Moncrieff translation were both downloaded from Gutenberg; the audio, about 8 hours and beautifully recorded by Monique Vincens, comes from . The resulting LARA version is posted , view in Chrome or Firefox. You can use the audio controls to play audio a page at a time or a sentence at a time. Clicking on a pencil icon shows a translation of the previous sentence on the right; clicking on a word shows a concordance of places where that word occurs in the text.

We are writing a paper about this work, due at the end of the month. If you have any feedback, in particular including suggestions for what texts to do next or ideas about how one might use resources like LARA Combray in practice, it will be much appreciated!

Picking up on Th茅odore's recommendation in message #9, I have used the same technique to create a LARA version of Rimbaud's Les po猫tes de sept ans. It's posted . What a great poem! I had not seen it before, thank you Th茅odore. The audio is again from LitteratureAudio, this time by recorded by Alain Degandt.

[Update, Oct 11 2022]

We have now submitted our paper. In the course of writing it, I went through four texts I'd created using the alignment method, listening to each piece of audio, checking it against the text and translation that the aligner had matched to it, and correcting where it was wrong. This kind of annotation work is common in language technology projects, and in nearly all cases it's painfully dull. But not here! I was amazed to find how much I enjoyed reading Combray in this new way, and how much more I got out of it as I listened to the French audio while flicking my eyes back and forward between the pieces of French text and English translation, which were neatly lined up for me.

There were two things in particular that stood out. First, it's possible to read a good deal more quickly. Proust is a notoriously demanding author; when reading in normal text form I usually feel I've reached my limit after at most 20-25 pages, and can no longer maintain the concentration needed to disentangle the longer sentences. Here, I was supported by the audio and the English translation, and I could read the whole book in two or three days. This exposed all sorts of connections I hadn't noticed before. Second, listening to Monique Vincens reading aloud made me properly aware of how funny Proust is; his irony is often so subtle that I hadn't noticed it, but she does a wonderful job of conveying the humour.

All in all, I felt I was appreciating the book at a different level. I will soon start putting together a LARA version of A l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs.

I sincerely enjoyed all of St茅phane Heuet's adaptations of La Recherche into graphic novel format. Combray covers the first half of Du C么t茅 de Chez Swann and is wonderfully illustrated and very faithful to the original text. The only downside is that he didn't finish the entire Recherche!

驴Buscar? No solo: crear.

This adaptation does not shy away from the complexities of the original, but makes them more endurable. I wondered, completing this volume, if now I have read more Proust then ever before? Perhaps this series of volumes will be all of Proust I can endure.

I am one of those strange readers who love reading about Proust, but have never read that much of his work. I chip away at it, but never get that far. If I'm ever stranded on a desert island, with only Proust to read, I'm sure I'll really get into it.

T盲st盲 alkaa Marcel Proustin mittava romaanikokonaisuus, joka kattaa suomeksi kymmenen osaa. Luettavaa siis riitt盲盲, vaikka romaani j盲盲kin lopulta kesken Proustin kuoltua ennen sarjan lopullista julkaisua. L盲ht枚kohtaisesti t盲m盲 on niit盲 luku-urakoita, joiden j盲rkevyytt盲 sopii kyseenalaistaa. Itsekin vastustelin pitk盲盲n, mutta riitt盲v盲sti kehuja vakavasti otettavilta tahoilta kuultuani p盲盲tin tarttua t盲h盲n klassikkoon.

Kaikki kirjallisuudenharrastajat varmasti tiet盲v盲t t盲st盲 sen i盲nikuisen madeleine-leivoksen, mutta v盲ltt盲m盲tt盲 kovin paljon pidemm盲lle tiet盲mys kirjasarjasta ei sitten ulotukaan. Juonesta puhuminen on ainakin t盲m盲n ensimm盲isen osan kohdalla merkitykset枚nt盲; t盲m盲 ei ole mik盲盲n juoniromaani.

Tyylilt盲盲n teos on eritt盲in polveileva ja pitk盲virkkeinen. Kappaleet ovat pitk盲hk枚j盲, eik盲 teksti盲 ole juuri jaettu lukuihin. Proust kuvailee v盲rikk盲盲sti ja esittelee niin lavean joukon Combrayn asukkaita, ett盲 lukijalla on kovasti tekemist盲 siin盲, ett盲 muistaa kuka kukin on. Kerronta my枚s vaeltaa aikatasolta toiselle kovin notkeasti.

Mik盲 t盲ss盲 sitten on kiinnostavaa? Proust kirjoittaa ihastuttavasti, oli kyse sitten niinkin latteasta asiasta kuin parsan sy枚misen seurauksista:

Minusta tuntui, ett盲 n盲m盲 taivaalliset v盲ris盲vyt paljastivat viehke盲t olennot, jotka olivat huvikseen muuttuneet vihanneksiksi ja jotka sy枚t盲v盲ksi tarkoitetun ja kiinte盲n valeruumiinsa l盲pi antoivat aamuruskosta syntyvien v盲riens盲, sateenkaareen v盲ikkeittens盲 ja haipuvan illan sinens盲 takaa aavistaa kallisarvoisen elinnesteens盲, jonka min盲 tunnistin viel盲 koko seuraavan y枚n ajan, kun ne runollisia ja karkeita leikkej盲盲n leikkiess盲盲n, kuin jossakin Shakespearen satun盲ytelm盲ss盲 muuttivat minun y枚astiani tuoksuvaksi maljaksi.

T盲st盲 teoksesta on luonnollisesti kirjoitettu hyllymetreitt盲in analyysi盲. Suosittelen syvent盲m盲盲n lukukokemusta joillain ulkopuolisilla huomioilla, sill盲 ne voivat nostaa esiin kiinnostavia yksityiskohtia, joita itse ei huomannut.

Isoin 盲rsytyksen aihe on s盲盲nn枚nmukainen tapa kirjoittaa nimet v盲liviivatta, siis 鈥滾eonie t盲ti鈥. Tietty vanhanaikaisuus tyyliss盲 toki Proustin tekstiin istuu. Pontus Purokuru kommentoi Selit盲 mulle -podcastissaan (Purokurun Proust-jaksot olivat minulle yksi viimeisist盲 arkunnauloista), ett盲 varsinkin t盲m盲 ensimm盲inen osa on paikoin heikosti suomennettu. T盲h盲n uuteen painokseen olisi kyll盲 siet盲nyt viel盲 oikolukea ja korjailla ly枚ntivirheet.

---

I embarked on Marcel Proust's extensive ten-part novel series in Finnish, undeterred by its incomplete publication due to Proust's death. Despite initial scepticism, I succumbed to the praise from credible sources and ventured into this literary classic. Proust's work, known for the everlasting madeleine pastry, goes beyond a traditional plot, instead vividly portraying the bourgeois life in turn-of-the-century France and delving into the intricacies of memory.

Stylistically, the novel is characterized by its meandering and lengthy sentences, with minimal chapter divisions. Proust introduces a diverse array of Combray residents, challenging readers to keep track of each character amidst the fluid narrative that effortlessly traverses different time frames. Despite the lack of a conventional plot, the allure lies in Proust's enchanting prose, where even the most mundane topics, like the consequences of eating asparagus, are described in a poetic and captivating manner.

The work has garnered extensive analysis, prompting a recommendation to supplement the reading experience with external insights to uncover hidden nuances. Though showing signs of age, the 1968 Finnish translation by Pirkko Peltonen and Helvi Nurminen did not significantly impede the reading experience. However, this new edition could benefit from a final proofread to address typographical errors and enhance overall readability.

Smatrala sam radnju dosadnom a klinca napornim.

This book is just a part of a bigger book and that's why I didn't like it. It's just a introduction with too much characters and descriptions that need to be fit into something but aren't. I didn't know when I was in the past and when in the present. Another thing I have to mention is that the author changes his toughts so quickly that you can't remember what you read two pages before. And the last thing that I didn't like was the main character, he was so annoying and I couldn't understand him at all. But this is just my opinion :/

The celebrated beginning is easier to read if you allow it to be the dream it is. Let what scintillates sparkle like the dew and sink yourself in the smell of the sacred chestnuts. This is life a century ago in another country and you are to have it transferred to your mind through impressions, which happens easily if you just don't bear down. Go easily. Don't focus on the length or the complications, just imbibe. It is delightful!!

Lapsuuden aikaisia tapahtumia tarkastellaan varakkaiden isovanhempien huvilalta k盲sin, ja Marcelin vanhemmat tiet盲v盲t kuuluvansa parempaan porukkaan, joten liian brutaalit paikalliset ik盲toverit kiellet盲盲n kokonaan. Marcelin ainoiksi yst盲v盲ksi j盲盲v盲tkin t盲ten valtavan kirjaston klassikot, ja h盲n seurusteleekin p盲iv盲t pitk盲t teosten fiktiivisten sankareiden kanssa uneksien paremmasta tulevaisuudesta.

Maailmankuulu kirjallisuuden klassikko Proustista kehkeytyikin, mutta h盲nen el盲m盲nkertansa j盲i kesken, ja osa sarjan teoksista julkaistiin postuumisti. Nykylukijaa voi vieh盲tt盲盲 edelleenkin pikkutarkka tajunnanvirtatekniikka, muistin ja muistojen osuus ihmisyksil枚n kehittymisess盲 omalla polullaan. Samantapaiseen viipyilev盲盲n menneisyyden otteeseen on moni suomalainenkin kirjailija uppoutunut ihan Oscar Parlandista ja miksei Kalle P盲盲talostakin l盲htien.

T盲ss盲 teoksessa kuultaa vahvana vanhempien poroporvarillinen arvomaailma taustalla, ja kun pojalta kiellettiin paikalliset kaverit, ja my枚s kirjallisuuden suhteen k盲ytettiin melko lailla ankaraa sensuuria. Swannista Marcel saa jonkinlaisen yst盲v盲n, mutta perheen tukahduttava ilmapiiri tekee pojasta omien muistojen perusteella ahdistuneen ja umpimielisen uneksujan, joka j盲lkik盲teen diagnosoi itselleen masennuksen jo el盲m盲ns盲 varhaisina vuosina.

Marcel-pojalla murheita riitt盲盲, kun sisko paljastuu lesboksi, mik盲 j盲rkytt盲盲 koko perhett盲, ja is盲nkin elinvoima hiipuu t盲llaisen n枚yryytyksen koettuaan.

En盲盲 yhdeks盲n osaa j盲ljell盲. Sen j盲lkeen pit盲is olla kadotettu aika l枚ydetty. Tai ainakin aikaa kadotettu. T盲盲 on kuitenkin tosi mielenkiintonen luettava ihan jo rakenteensa takia, kun on kirjoitettu ik盲盲n kuin yhdeksi luvuksi. Ensimm盲inen (ja viimeinen) luvunvaihto tulee jossain 40 sivun paikkeilla ja loput 200 on sit yht盲 putkea, mut se ei oikeastaan haittaa vaan p盲invastoin tekee siit盲 omituisen koukuttavan muistojen ja jatkuvan kuvailun virran mihin on tosi helppo antautua. En tii盲 miten poikkeaa ranskan- tai englanninkielisest盲 rytmityksest盲, kun suomennettuna t盲盲 on julkaistu jostain syyst盲 kymmeness盲 osassa ja alkuper盲isen盲 k盲sitt盲盲kseni seitsem盲ss盲. Tosi kaunis kirja kielelt盲盲n ja sis盲ll枚lt盲盲n, mutta saa n盲hd盲 mik盲 on fiilis kun kaikki ~4000 sivua on joskus ehk盲 luettu.

I no fot punts!!
Ah i no t茅 cap铆tols xd
Tot i aix貌, m鈥檋a agradat bastant.

Proust kirkoittaa eritt盲in hyv盲盲 teksti盲. H盲n tosiaan saa her盲tetty盲 lapsuuden Combraynsa eloon ja luo kutkuttavan monis盲ikeisi盲 henkil枚hahmoja. Isot盲din luulosairaus, Fran莽oisen palvova palvelijuus yhdistettyn盲 h盲ijyyteen, Blochin pikkuvanhuus ja suorapuheisuus... Kaikki n盲m盲 hahmot tuntuvat hyvin el盲vilt盲, todellisilta.

T盲st盲 on hyv盲 jatkaa kadonneen ajan etsimist盲.

Have you ever had so rich chocolate cake that it's overwhelming and just too much? The literary version of a super rich chocolate cake is 脌 la recherche du temps perdu. It's too much and overwhelming and yet it's wonderful. I loved it, but only a couple of eight minute sections at a time.

Erja Manton lukema YLE:n 盲盲nikirja on ihana paria virhett盲 kirjan puoliv盲liss盲 lukuunottamatta. Puoli sivua teksti盲 puuttui osan 32 lopusta ja osan 34 lopusta puuttui pari rivi盲. Luin kirjaa my枚s paperilta pysy盲kseni jyv盲ll盲 nimist盲 ja pitkist盲 monen lauseen virikkeit盲. Silti ehdottomasti vastinetta YLE-verolle.
