Manny Thanks everyone!

We saw it last Saturday afternoon in the display window of Payot, the classiest librairie in Geneva. I googled it and found that it had just been printed, in a limited edition of 1200 copies, and that Gallimard said there would be no reprinting. Someone in the Proust group posted to say that all copies on Amazon had already been sold. I said that, if it was still there, I couldn't imagine anything I'd want more for Christmas.

We turned up at Payot five minutes before they opened on Monday morning and were the first customers in the shop. There was a very anxious moment when the assistant asked if we were the people he'd talked to on Saturday. We were forced to say we weren't. But he came back a few minutes later with a box, which we paid for before he could change his mind. I asked how many they'd sold. He said they'd only got a few, this was the last but one, they were trying to get more from Paris but he wasn't certain any were left.

Not wrapped it up but decided I would be impossible to live with if I had to wait until Christmas, so I got to open it on the 100th anniversary day of the first printing - more fitting, in fact.

THANK YOU NOT FOR AN UNBELIEVABLY SPLENDID PRESENT!

message 17: by Garima (new)

Garima Magnifique.

And you look like an apt owner of that present, Manny.

Manny Thank you Garima... I am certainly a very happy owner, and I will read it with great care and attention! I will just finish Proust connu et inconnu first though before I start in earnest...

message 19: by Warwick (new)

Warwick Wow. That looks absolutely incredible. And I'm not just talking about the beard.

Kalliope I know the color of jealousy...

That is wonderful. Enjoy it and treasure it...

Manny Kalliope, I wish I could show it to you. Come visit us in Geneva sometime and I will.

Manny (I should say that is a general invitation to Proust-lovers, but especially to Kalliope... in a completely fair world, she would have this book and not me).

message 24: by Nick (new)

Nick How wonderful.

Riku Sayuj Manny wrote: "It doesn't get more hardcore than this!"

Sure it doesn't! This should come with a warning, in fact!

message 28: by Anne Sofie (new)

Anne Sofie Woooow! What a beauty! :')

Manny I wonder whether Gallimard are now wishing they'd printed more of them?

message 30: by David (new)

David Jealous! I have paperback gallimards of the volumes in Swann's Way which I picked up along the Seine book kiosks, but this is beautiful!

Manny It is indeed quite exquisite! And we even have the box in near-perfect condition.

The ironic thing about Gallimard is that they refused to publish Swann when Proust first submitted the manuscript to them. According to Gautier-Vignal in Proust connu et inconnu, which I'm reading now, Gide said that it was one of the two decisions he'd made that he truly regretted.

Don't worry, Manny. I am used to the unfair world thing.

I also think I deserved to live in a palazzo on the Grand Canal, just like Peggy Guggenheim... May be on my next life if I am good on this one..

message 42: by mark (new)

mark monday that seems like a difficult book to read on the bus.

I like that hardwood floor. and the cutie opening up that package.

Manny Mark, I don't know what to say. Except that you're right, I won't be reading it on the bus :)

message 44: by mark (new)

mark monday ha! well I was going to say something about how enjoyable the review is, but it looks like everyone else on the thread has that covered so I thought I'd focus on other topics.

Manny I got this lovely book and then immediately went off to a conference, so I've not had a chance to enjoy it yet. I'm planning to catch up over the weekend...

message 46: by Fionnuala (new) - added it

Fionnuala Photo number six is fascinating, showing the stages that were gone through just to settle on the title alone.
And does this volume just cover the Combray section or all of Du c么t茅 de chez Swann?
Are the pieces of paper, the paperolles, which he attached by hand, actual photo copies of the originals?
As an object, it is just so interesting, never mind the chronology of changes it marks - a fine piece of art to adorn any coffee table.
Sorry about all the questions - I don't know anyone else who owns one...

Manny I understand your curiosity, and it is indeed a wonderful book! In answer to your questions:

- The number of times Proust changed his mind about the first sentence is also amazing. He has "Longtemps, je me suis couch茅 de bonne heure." in the proofs, then he's scribbled over it twice with different variants before coming back to the original formulation.

- It's just Combray.

- As far as I can see, the paperolles are photocopies, as is the whole manuscript.

Fionnuala Manny wrote: "I understand your curiosity, and it is indeed a wonderful book! "

Thanks for responding, Manny. Today, I got to examine the facsimile for myself - I found a bookshop with several copies still available - and now I, in turn, will have to start dropping hints about Christmas presents - it seems far too self-indulgent to buy it for myself...

Manny Clearly a good bookshop! Where!?

Fionnuala In France ;)
