600听books386听followersLeonid Nikolayevich Andreyev (Russian: 袥械芯薪懈写 袧懈泻芯谢邪械胁懈褔 袗薪写褉械械胁; 1871-1919) was a Russian playwright and short-story writer who led the Expressionist movement in the national literature. He was active between the revolution of 1905 and the Communist revolution which finally overthrew the Tsarist government. His first story published was About a Poor Student, a narrative based upon his own experiences. It was not, however, until Gorky discovered him by stories appearing in the Moscow Courier and elsewhere that Andreyevs literary career really began. His first collection of stories appeared in 1901, and sold a quarter-million copies in short time. He was hailed as a new star in Russia, where his name soon became a byword. He published his short story, In the Fog in 1902. Although he started out in the Russian vein he soon startled his readers by his eccentricities, which grew even faster than his fame. His two best known stories may be The Red Laugh (1904) and The Seven Who Were Hanged (1908). His dramas include the Symbolist plays The Life of Man (1906), Tsar Hunger (1907), Black Masks (1908), Anathema (1909) and He Who Gets Slapped (1915).

The Red Laugh is like The Triumph of Death by Pieter Bruegel but it is much bloodier and much madder鈥�

It is all nonsense that there are as many brains as there are men; mankind has only one intellect, and it is beginning to get muddled.
And the triumph of madness is war. And the dead snatch the living and drive them mad鈥� And the mad start laughing and their laughter is blood-red鈥�

I felt it for the first time as we were marching along the road 鈥� marching incessantly for ten hours without stopping, never diminishing our step, never waiting to pick up those that had fallen, but leaving them to the enemy, that was moving behind us in a compact mass only three or four hours later effacing the marks of our feet by their own.

His lips twitched, trying to frame a word, and the same instant there happened something incomprehensible, monstrous and supernatural. I felt a draught of warm air upon my right cheek that made me sway 鈥� that is all 鈥� while before my eyes, in place of the white face, there was something short, blunt and red, and out of it the blood was gushing as out of an uncorked bottle, such as is drawn on badly executed signboards. And that short, red and flowing 鈥榮omething鈥� still seemed to be smiling a sort of smile, a toothless laugh 鈥� a red laugh.
I recognised it 鈥� that red laugh. I had been searching for it, and I had found it 鈥� that red laugh. Now I understood what there was in all those mutilated, torn, strange bodies. It was a red laugh. It was in the sky, it was in the sun, and soon it was going to overspread the whole earth 鈥� that red laugh!

鈥orror and madness.
Could a book start with horror and madness? Is it the right way to do it, to throw the pounding words of insanity and death at your reader, without introducing your world to the same? Well, this is exactly how you have been treated as soon as you open the book. The abovementioned phrase embarks on the unusual journey, a reader may onboard with the book. The profoundly disturbing opening of the book set the tone for the book which I read with bated breath. The author seems to be at home in the region of horror though the horror we are talking about here has many shades and layers. The reader is plunged into the abyss of terror and insanity as war is going on, the reader looks into the eyes of the soldiers, what the reader sees is more than death but what could be more than death, is longing for life or more disturbingly for death- to annihilate oneself into stardust? The entire mass of fighting soldiers seems to form a jelly of death and madness, and amidst this insanity, we encounter one of the narrators of the book who is thinking about his home- his wife and son, the narrator sounds as strange as the book itself. Welcome to the hell, hell-like we create and we live in.

Who said that one must not kill, burn or rob ?....
If death could be poetry, then it would be like The Red Laugh, it鈥檚 like you are witnessing a burning hell. Death what is it? Is it the end of life or just a stage of life or perhaps only a stage on the path of wonderful and confusing visions? The book makes you think that violence could be beautiful and aesthetic as well, it's somewhat like a symphony of violence which reminds me of Journey to the End of Night by Louis-Ferdinand C茅line as I have not read anything else which is so disturbing, at the same time so poetic and lyrical. The reader might long to run somewhere else into unpeopled and quivering space, far from this landscape of 鈥榟orror and madness鈥� but the able pen of the author, his breathtaking prose and storytelling keep the reader to avert the longing till the very end of the book, but, of course, the reader is being kept on toes throughout the book.

And nobody seems to raise eyebrows there as people are getting down to guns and bullets as if it is a norm here and 鈥榙eath鈥� loses its significance since nobody is alive anymore.
The fertile drops of rain lose their meaning too, it is like nobody notices life as all of them were too busy in death. And the sky turns blood red since the 鈥榬ed鈥� evaporates from the oceans of blood into the sky. And the earth is strange there, its smell is different as if it is some new world, the world of the dead, the people are entering into. It鈥檚 certainly something more than death, but the question arises again, what could be more than death? Perhaps it is when humanity doesn鈥檛 know anymore what it comprises of when it can鈥檛 recognize itself, the way it has known, when a man is thrown into the abyss of nothingness from which it gets difficult to come back, probably that鈥檚 more terrifying than the death itself. The eyes of people are tinged with a red fantastic color of blood, that changed itself into air and light.
鈥�.I am going mad from dirt, while you talk of- home! I am like an animal, I despise myself, I cannot recognize myself, and death is not at all terrifying.

Meanwhile, through the horror show, humanity rises up against all the odds and makes itself visible upon the surface from the abysses of inhumanity as we see that dead lumps of people are thrown without any uneasiness as if it is daily chore but are not crushed under wheels of death, understanding the underlying humanity weaved in the barbarity of it, but how long could it persist after all. The dead were counted at first but soon it becomes impossible as the alive become endangered there. And how much horror could humanity bear, a student certainly could not bear it as he shoots himself dead? The doctor suggests that others will shoot themselves too.
And we came upon dead bodies oftener and oftener. We examined them rapidly and threw them off the rails- those indifferent, calm, limp bodies, that left dark oily stains where the blood had soaked into the earth.
And what does it mean to be alive in this madness? Does it mean to keep breathing at any costs, as we see that often soldiers or rather human beings have to pay price in wars by losing their body parts. Could the joy of just being alive overcome the sadness of losing part of yourself, your being? I was overcome by joy at the thought that now I would be sent home, that I was alive- alive for a long time to come, live forever. And what could such profound and intense, naked and frank horror could do to man, could it transform him into something beyond the comprehension of humanity, perhaps into a monster oblivious to sympathy, empathy, intelligence, pity, and others, the traits we often associate humanity with; a monster seized by something brutal, insane and joyous, waiting to merrily express itself through it on just a hint of the opportunity. What is this jubilation we see when others are beaten to death? How infectious is this passionate rage and hatred which wants to demolish everything, is it one of those inherent traits of humanity or something humanity imbibed over the course of inventions such as war. It shows how vulnerable is humanity, all our vices, values, traits, and ethics go for a toss; humanity, which on exposure to extreme terror and madness could become what it is afraid of.
Who said one must not kill, burn, or rob? We will kill and burn and rob. We, a joyous careless band of braves, we will destroy all; their buildings and museums, and merry as children, full of fiery laughter, we will dance on the ruins. I will proclaim the madhouse our fatherland; all those that have not gone mad- our enemies and madmen; and when I, great, unconquerable and joyous, will begin to reign over the whole world, its sole lord and master, what a glad laugh will ring over the whole universe.
The most profound question is- is life worth living despite all the madness, the absurdity of life? The question has been haunting humanity since the onset of civilization, many philosophers have devised their philosophies around the central thought. And what respite could literature provide from such madness, we see quite a few authors write to provide solace to their troubled soul. Our narrator finds himself caught in 鈥榮enseless creative ecstasy鈥� after returning from war, as he writes for days and nights, months, incessantly, perhaps to get sanity amidst this madness, but has he succeeded? He questions his very existence as if who he is or rather what he becomes due to madness, the war. What is war? Perhaps an inscrutable mystery, like a terrible spirit, to which humanity can give no form. The war is eating thousands of lives every day but does it change anything, the unremitting hunger of war seems to keeps on expanding just like the universe itself with every passing moment.
What is it essentially, the madness? An absurd terrible dream or a real madness since people are fighting incessantly and when their hands were not enough, they devised machines to kill each other; and when their weapons betray them, they go back to hand but madness must continue. We see phantoms of death appear time and again or perhaps the men become shadows of humanity- silhouette of their very existence, gripped with insanity, the madmen keep on fighting against those shadows. The phantoms disappear to thin air as they appear leaving earth-strewn and scalped with ripped off bodies of silent cries. What transforms the men into a killing machine? Why so much madness, why madmen?

This was one of the best things I read all year. It's only about 24,000 words, if you like surreal, dark horror infused with a lot of violence and imagery straight out of a German expressionist film, do yourself a favor and read it.
For me it brought to mind Kosinski's "The Painted Bird" which is quite explicit about the realities of war, but this book is far more horror-focused, surreal, and more fun to read frankly. It's full of moments of profound violence, bloodletting and misanthropy, but it's wonderfully evocative in it's imagery and very unpredictable as well. Andreyev's skill with words gives the horror a dark beauty that's a joy to read, if ya like that sorta thing...
Some sections resemble Poe in their fevered delirium with a palpable feeling of madness. The central theme of the book is about a contagious bloodthirsty madness that spreads from the battlefield, across all of society. The ongoing war seems to unleash something in mankind, something Andreyev hints was probably there all along.
There's many memorable images here. Much of the book is nocturnal, told by stark firelight. At one evocative moment a group of exhausted soldiers sit around a samovar:
"The sunset was yellow and cold; black, unillumined, motionless clouds hung heavily over it, while the earth under it was black, and our faces in that ill-omened light seemed yellow, like the faces of the dead. We all sat watching the samovar, but it went out, its sides reflecting the yellowishness and menace of the sun set, and it seemed also an unfamiliar, dead and incomprehensible object."
Beautiful, expressionist, memorable and yet horrific.
In one scene a group of soldiers is sent out to collect the wounded:
"These were the first that we found, and they horrified us. But later on we came upon them oftener and oftener along the rails or near them, and the whole field, lit up by the motionless red flare of the conflagrations, began stirring as if it were alive, breaking out into loud cries, wails, curses and groans. All those dark mounds stirred and crawled about like half-dead lobsters let out of a basket, with outspread legs, scarcely resembling men in their broken, unconscious movements and ponderous immobility."
It's little details like this that make it realistic:
"I was beginning to get exhausted, and went a little way off to have a smoke and rest a bit. The blood, dried to my hands, covered them like a pair of black gloves, making it difficult for me to bend my fingers, so that I kept dropping my cigarettes and matches."
Later the story is told by the brother of the soldier. He sees madness spreading. He watches returning soldiers on a train:
"...I go there every morning now--and saw a whole carriage full of our mad soldiers. It was not opened, but shunted on to another line, and I had time to see several faces through the windows. They were terrible, especially one. Fearfully drawn, the colour of a lemon, with an open black mouth and fixed eyes, it was so like a mask of horror that I could not tear my eyes away from it."

"Something was ominously burning in a broad red glare, and in the smoke there swarmed monstrous, misshapen children, with heads of grown-up murderers. They were jumping lightly and nimbly, like young goats at play, and were breathing with difficulty, like sick people. At one point the brother of the wounded soldier in the story sits in a theater thinking of standing up and screaming fire, and foreseeing the result:

They would jump up, yelling and howling like animals; they would forget that they had wives, sisters, mothers, and would begin casting themselves about like men stricken with sudden blindness, in their madness throttling each other with their white fingers fragrant with scent. [...] ...they would be throttling, trampling, and beating the heads of the women, demolishing their ingenious, cunning headdresses. They would tear at each other's ears, bite off each other's noses, and tear the very clothes off each other's bodies, feeling no shame, for they would be mad. [...] For men are always murderers, and their calmness and generosity is the calmness of a well-fed animal, that knows itself out of danger."
This book is full of such deliciously dark, misanthropic passages. My first encounter with Leonid Andreyev was his excellent short story "Lazarus" which feels like a cosmic horror tale that could have been written today, but this novella is even better.
For me it brought to mind Kosinski's "The Painted Bird" which is quite explicit about the realities of war, but this book is far more horror-focused, surreal, and more fun to read frankly. It's full of moments of profound violence, bloodletting and misanthropy, but it's wonderfully evocative in it's imagery and very unpredictable as well. Andreyev's skill with words gives the horror a dark beauty that's a joy to read, if ya like that sorta thing...
Some sections resemble Poe in their fevered delirium with a palpable feeling of madness. The central theme of the book is about a contagious bloodthirsty madness that spreads from the battlefield, across all of society. The ongoing war seems to unleash something in mankind, something Andreyev hints was probably there all along.
There's many memorable images here. Much of the book is nocturnal, told by stark firelight. At one evocative moment a group of exhausted soldiers sit around a samovar:
"The sunset was yellow and cold; black, unillumined, motionless clouds hung heavily over it, while the earth under it was black, and our faces in that ill-omened light seemed yellow, like the faces of the dead. We all sat watching the samovar, but it went out, its sides reflecting the yellowishness and menace of the sun set, and it seemed also an unfamiliar, dead and incomprehensible object."
Beautiful, expressionist, memorable and yet horrific.
In one scene a group of soldiers is sent out to collect the wounded:
"These were the first that we found, and they horrified us. But later on we came upon them oftener and oftener along the rails or near them, and the whole field, lit up by the motionless red flare of the conflagrations, began stirring as if it were alive, breaking out into loud cries, wails, curses and groans. All those dark mounds stirred and crawled about like half-dead lobsters let out of a basket, with outspread legs, scarcely resembling men in their broken, unconscious movements and ponderous immobility."
It's little details like this that make it realistic:
"I was beginning to get exhausted, and went a little way off to have a smoke and rest a bit. The blood, dried to my hands, covered them like a pair of black gloves, making it difficult for me to bend my fingers, so that I kept dropping my cigarettes and matches."
Later the story is told by the brother of the soldier. He sees madness spreading. He watches returning soldiers on a train:
"...I go there every morning now--and saw a whole carriage full of our mad soldiers. It was not opened, but shunted on to another line, and I had time to see several faces through the windows. They were terrible, especially one. Fearfully drawn, the colour of a lemon, with an open black mouth and fixed eyes, it was so like a mask of horror that I could not tear my eyes away from it."

This is a brutal and powerful story told in a surreal, expressionist manner.
Andreyev gives a depiction of madness (PTSD) brought on by war, but also a depiction of how the mad soldier returns home and affects those around him. The madness spreads from the war to the cities far from the front, which could be a way for Andreyev to show the huge consequences of war to the whole society, not just the soldiers.
Not for the faint-hearted but absolutely recommended.
