The Emperor of Evening Stars

Rate this book
In the beginning, there was darkness.
Before he met Callie, before he became the Bargainer, there was Desmond Flynn, the bastard son of a scribe. A boy born to a weak mother, cursed with little magic, and destined to marry a slave.

But fate had something else in mind.

Found in the forest when she was young, Laura Thalassa was raised by fairies, kidnapped by werewolves, and given over to vampires as repayment for a hundred year debt. She’s been brought back to life twice, and, with a single kiss, she woke her true love from eternal sleep. She now lives happily ever after with her undead prince in a castle in the woods.

 or something like that anyway.

When not writing, Laura can be found scarfing down guacamole, hoarding chocolate for the apocalypse, or curled up on the couch with a good book.

Major spoilers, proceed at your own risk.

After reading the second book I had really low expectations from this one and I think that it helped me like this more because of that. It's no surprise that I was dying to know more about Desmond's life before Callie and about the deeper workings of the fae world. I got more than I expected, it still wasn't as much as I wanted but it was more than expected for sure.

The first half of the book focuses on his quest for revenge and the factions of his life intermediate to the achievement of his goal. What I think is that Laura Thalassa has the potential to write a book based solely on the paranormal/fantasy aspect without depending on romance, thought it would only add to the plot. BUT, I felt that in the first two books, she depended more on romance than on the fantastical world or the mystery around which it should revolve. One disappointment that I had to contend with was that the disappearance of the soldiers is not mentioned in the book and I wanted to see what his first reactions were because hellooo, it all started even before he met Callie, so obviously we don't know how it all started! But still, we shall persevere till the next book.

Now, onto the story:

Larissa Flynn

That mother of mine saved me when he’d have me dead. Rather than hate me because I was his, she loved me because I was hers.

First, all hail to the woman who had the courage to escape the Shadow King, protect her unborn child from the Purge and rub it into his nose even when she knew he was going to kill her someday, and gave us one of the most selfish, caring, loving, bastardly fairy- Desmond Flynn.
This woman is officially one of the best female characters in this series, even though she has like two three chapters where she's in the spotlight. She had violet eyes. She was perfect in everything - being a spy or a mother.

Galleghar Nyx
Alternately known as the Shadow King, he was a tyrant, a selfish, narcissistic, sick piece of trash. He killed his own children because of a prophecy and had hundreds of concubines, or wives. I mean, Disgusting .

The one thing that really really creeped me out was that Desmond looks like him, almost exactly. My mind just can't accept this fact and has therefore tried to imagine him as some lookalike of Voldemort but every time we're reminded of it in the book, it takes away a second from my mortal life.

Desmond Flynn

This book made me love him even more while at the same time actually making me understand how selfish, lethal and cruel he once was. But only to those who actually deserve it because, and I quote, "You don't fuck with the innocents".

Second- the fairy dude is almost 270 years old. I was curious about his age and he is....younger than I expected🙈

He was, from what I observed, always emotionally reserved, even with his own mother. Whoever he loves, he loves deeply and fully but always guards his secrets because

Secrets are meant for one soul to keep.

His thirst for vengeance was really one of the things that made me like him even more instead of putting me on the fence about his nature because a person who loves his mother so much is a weakness of mine and I have never been able to hate someone who delivered their own type of justice to someone who wronged their mother.

The reason we hated him for ten seconds straight:
He respected his mother so much and YET the author had to go and make him like all the assholes out there and make him 'fuck' someone, on his mother's death anniversary, because he needed a warm body and actually gave it priority over his friends. And because a bad boy type guy has to be a manwhore right? I really don't understand why authors feel like this should be added to the bad boy traits but I hate it. And now, I am really happy that Callie had flings and casual boyfriends all throughout the years we know about in the book one itself.

Now onto the time when he meets Callie.

Part 1:

I swear to the Undying Gods that once I’m able to, I will scour the earth for my soulmate. I’ll put my past behind me and focus on the future. And when I find her if I find her —I won’t waste time fearing what others will think. I’ll cherish her, respect her, love her.

Part 2: Then he actually fell in love with her.

This isn’t some bond-borne magic being shoved down my throat. This isn’t even romance. This is love-you-till-your-skin-sags-off-your-bones. Love you till then and beyond. It’s not lustful, it’s not selfish or petty.

Dear gods, I love her. - I mean, welcome to the Wonderland.

He took care of her when she was sick, when he could've just cured it with magic but....with consequences.

Fuck it, tonight I’m going to be that clucking nursemaid.

Took her around the world

We only have a couple hours to enjoy ourselves before I need to take her back to Peel Academy. You can call me her fairy-fucking-godmother.

Anyhoww, I feel like if I say anything more, I'll just quote the whole damn book, so I'm going to stop, albeit reluctantly.

I received an ARC for an honest review.
description

WOW.

I don’t know how to put what I feel for this book into words. It’s a strange thing, when you connect with a book, a cover, a character. You feel their angst, sorrow, pain, loss, and love. This series does that for me. This book seriously makes me a prostitute of feelings.

This is Des’s book, his beginning, his story, his secrets.

Larissa, Des’s mom, breaks free from the tyranny of the Night King. She raises Des as a bastard son. Every day was a day of ridicule for Des. Being born a bastard, and having a whore mother gives ample opportunities for the towns folk to talk shit.

Tragedy happens, and Des set forth a plan to rid his world of the Night King.

The best part of this book, is seeing things through Desmund’s eyes. Watching the relationship between Calli and Des build.

If you didn’t fall in love with Des in the first book, and the second book still didn’t have you swooning, this book will do you in.

First, I would like to thank Mother Nature for the blizzard. Without her, I couldn’t fly through this series so quickly due to social obligations and that annoying thing called working for a living.

Second, I would like to thank Laura Thalassa for this book from Desmond’s POV. It was fun reading about his past with his mother, Malaki, and the evil Day Kingdom twin. 😈 The greatest section of the book hands down goes to Des spending time with 16 year old Callie. That. Was. Legit. Desmond is such a Slytherpuff. I don’t need the Sorting Hat to confirm it.

Third, I need to confess to everyone that I, an intellectual, who grew up in the 90s watching Sailor Moon (and accidentally still watches it and secretly loves it as an adult) have a very hard time not picturing this guy every time I read about white-haired Des hanging out with his best bro Malaki.

Fourth, it’s still snowing, so I’m off to read the next (and final 😭) one now.

I can't explain how perfect this book is.
I couldn't, even if I tried, make you understand how much I adore and love Desmond Flynn.
You never really know him, he has so many facets, his true self is highly complex and you cannot help but fall in love for all of his beautiful traits, but most of all, for the darkest ones.

There is no way, no freaking way, I'm going to be able to write a review.
A nice one, that is.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHEN I SAY "I COULDN'T HANDLE THE HECKING FEELS" ?!

Since the moment I started it, I felt hundreds of emotions, all together, scrambling in my head, it was heart-stopping.

Magnificence

I highlighted the shit out of everything that came out of The Bargainer's mouth. Because everything he says is pure poetry.

So I'm just going to lay down on my bed, and repeat my mantra "Laura Thalassa is my queen".

This book is perfect, case closed.

What a fabulous novella from the barginer series!!!! I loved looking back at the origins of this secretive and mysterious and very powerful fairy Desmond Flynn. I will admit that I got choked up a few times in this book and reading about him and his mother and their special bond and how others treated them badly saying his mother was a whore and him a weak bastard fairy broken my heart. Its also told how he rose to great power in the Angels Of small death Brotherhood which got him closer to King Nyx to get his revenge for him killing his mother. And I loved when the beautiful and creepy prophetess tells him of a fated mate and it sends him in a spin especially when she tells him she's human! And it was really awesome to read what his thoughts were and what he was truly feeling about Callie. Also we got a look at Desmonds loyal and best friend Malaki and how they came to be. I loved reading again the relationship between these two people who each had endured hell but still in the world of millions fate brought them together! Callie is one of my favorite female main characters of all time and seeing her get stronger and come into her own power after what her sick fucking stepfather did to her showed why she was a perfect queen to such a powerful man like Desmond . The chemistry between them and their final bonding was beautiful and full of hot steamy sensuality. And his vow at the end every girls dream come true.
Here is what he said:
There’s a vow, an ancient vow, in my land, and as long as anyone can remember, lovers have whispered it under the stars. For seven years they’ve eaten away at me. Finally I set them free. I search her eyes. “And mountains may rise and fall, and the sun might wither away, and the sea claim the land and swallow the sky. But you will always be mine. And the stars might fall from the heavens, and night might cloak the earth, but until darkness dies, I will always be yours.
I love this writer and her storytelling and characters are simply phenomenal!!!! Until next time Luv's💕💋

‘Secrets are meant for one soul to keep

‘R󲹱ǻ徱 studies Desmond Flynn, a man of dark intimacies striving to win the love of a woman who was scorned by his abandonment. ‘A Strange Hymn follows the maintenance of their love when trust is a feeble thing among the enigmatic and obscure, and ‘An Emperor of Evening Stars climbs the ladders and crawls through the layers of the well defended and secreted life of the man who lived many lives before he ever met Callie, and eventually came to be the dark King of Night, The Emperor of Evening Stars.

‘I’m not the dark, untouchable night, but the dying star within it.

Living in the lowliest city in the Kingdom of Night, raised and proclaimed as an impoverished ‘bastard child by a single hard-working mother, a title young Desmond loathes, but one he fights nonetheless. Deep in the caves of Arestys, Des is taught the ways of erudition, secrecy and control by an equally mysterious mother whose shadows are out of reach. We follow Des through his struggles of identity, his unknown heritage, and the mores of poverty and his place in society in his early teenage years with only his mother’s wise teachings and inscrutable instruction to hide and stow all that he is away from shrewd eyes and gossiping mouths.

‘I hate poverty. I hate feeling like we’re only entitled to the worst this realm has to offer simply because. But more than anything, I hate having to make hard choices. Books or food? To learn or to eat?

In the briefness of a millisecond Des loses everything, but it becomes the pinnacle moment of his life, defining his roaring desires for revenge. From the death of the most beloved person in Des’s mediocre life, Des has his sights set on destroying the man who deeply disturbed the foundation of his fragile existence. Ploughing through his life with the face of the man he abhors to the dark depths of hell and back, Des faces his darker crueller double who is far more harmonised in nature as he than he would like to admit.

‘He wants me to burn bright like the sun with my fury.
But I am the farthest, iciest reaches of the night.

Des evolves from an untried youth, learning the ropes of his life and circulating places he has only ever read about to a firmly formed man. An unforgiving past of coldness, calluses and fire, Des continues on, a solemn hopefulness for an undetermined future of potential love. Drawn to the dark night but shadowed by the light Des brings his business of bargains and deals to earth’s realm, establishing himself as the lawless bargainer, investing precious time in his search to find his nameless, faceless, soul-bonded partner.

‘I swear to the Undying Gods that once I’m able to, I will scour the earth for my soulmate. I’ll put my past behind me and focus on the future. And when I find her-if I find her- I won’t waste time fearing what others will think. I’ll cherish her, respect her, love her. For all the days of her mortal life, I’ll claim her as mine.

I loved the scenes between Des and Callie from Des’s vantage point, seeing with more context how situations played out through eyes other than Callie’s very insecure, vulnerable ones. It made me re-examine what I know from ‘R󲹱ǻ徱 and understand Des’s inner monologue at those crucial times when Callie needed him the most and was let down by him the most. Reading these scenes only made me love dear Desmond more, and I forgot how much I missed this well-suited, amazingly lovable couple who are strong enough apart but still the yin to the other’s yang. There are such similarities between Callie and Des’s lives, loners being hunted for their vulnerabilities and attacked for their weaknesses. Both outcasts. Both borne from distress and despair, but they give and teach what the other is missing. They are companionable together, and I only wanted to read more from Des’s perspective, preferably the first two books in a special edition told by Mr. Night himself 😉

‘She’s going to break me. I fell in love with this woman’s darkness, with her pain and vulnerability. That had been enough. But when she laughs-when she laughs, that’s when I realise I’m a ruined man.

Cities of the corrupt to castles of nobility, brotherhoods and loyal friends, battles and divinations, to a foreign world from which his young mate gazes at diverse stars, sinking in her own horrid life, Des waits the eternities of time to find his wounded mate, only to find that the fight for love is the most damning and sacrificial of any fight he has fought thus far.

“Love costs even more than power, even more than revenge or hate.

‘Sweet thing, hasn’t she figured out by now that though I rule the heavens, I’m hell wrapped in a man?

Split into three parts, this superb novella explores the three most essential, poignant and pivotal parts of Des’s life. His need for revenge, his ascent to power, and his yearning for love. The man of secrets and darkness, the man carved from poverty, hardened by pain and remade by love, let me welcome you to the life of 'The Emperor of Evening Stars'.

‘How do you fight the darkness? You refuse to let it snuff out your light.

Who is the real Desmond Fynn…If you read this you will gain more than you bargained for.

‘All those evenings she watched me leave her, those are the illusion. Because the truth is, I have searched worlds for her, looked for her for centuries. I’ve held her a thousand times in my dreams, and I have died a thousand times upon waking.
My heart, my soul. My queen.

‘This is what it’s like to be loved. Like the universe forming from chaos. It’s lighter than air and headier than magic.

Laura Thalassa has given me exactly what I didn’t know I needed in the Bargainer series. I have loved Callie and Desmond and their story from the very first page, but after reading The Emperor of Evening Stars, I’ve come to love them even more Des especially. This novella (which is a pretty decent length) is told entirely in Des’s POV, from his very beginnings in the Caverns of Arestys, to his rise in becoming the King of Night, and finally, his love story with his soulmate. If you’re a fan of the series, this companion novella is a must read.

I loved everything about this novella. We learn about Des’s past, which is heartbreaking, and about his quest for revenge against his father. But what I was really dying for was the moment Des would meet Callie, his soulmate and love of his life. When he first learns that his soulmate is human mortal he is appalled and not too keen on her. But after experiencing loss after loss, he realizes that he’ll do anything to find the woman who will stand by him and love him. So he does.

I swear to the Undying Gods that once I’m able to, I will scour the earth for me soulmate. I’ll put my past behind me and focus on the future. And when I find her—if I find her—I won’t waste time fearing what others will think. I’ll cherish her, respect her, love her.
For all the days of her mortal life, I’ll claim her as mine.

Getting Des’s POV about his first meeting with Callie, how he fell in love with her, how he withstood being without her, was perfect. If you didn’t love him in the first two books, you will definitely fall head over heels in love with him in his novella. He has been such an enigmatic character throughout the series in Callie’s POV, but we get so much insight in how he thinks and feels. The wait for the third and final Bargainer has gotten just the tiniest bit easier thanks to this novella. And I’m hoping we get a few more chapters in Des’s POV in Dark Harmony!

Can’t she tell that she brings me to my knees? Morning, evening, and night, she’s always right there in every beat of my heart. That sweet voice of hers sings through my veins. It calls to me across worlds. Everything she is, is mine, and everything I am is hers. Always.

Beginning 270 years ago this is the story of Desmond Flynn and his origins.
From the caves of Arestys to Barbos The City Of Thieves after his mother's murder.
His time spent amongst the brotherhood The Angels Of Small Death.
With a Prophecy and a hidden destiny to fulfil fate's path leads him along with his close friend Malaki to join the Night Kings military, a means to an end and a way to get closer to his father so he can attempt to take him out and finally achieve vengeance for his mother's senseless death.
These are the events and experiences that have forged Desmond into the fairy and king he is today.
This was a fascinating insight into Desmond's true character and what makes him tick and after reading this, I feel like I know him intimately.
His humble origins and life lessons giving him a slice of humanity that you don't usually get in a fairy.
Desmond's compassion towards humans was there to witness in his early life but I was very surprised with his initial inbred prejudices when it came to him learning his mate to be was a human and then so pleased to see him evolve from this limited and bias mindset and embrace his forthcoming destiny.
Loved experiencing the bond from Desmond's side and learning just what goes on in our Bargainers head.
It really gave me a whole new insight into just how much he loves and cherishes his human/siren mate.
It was beautiful just watching him take care of her just for the want of her comfort and happiness.
I think I now love Desmond even more if that's possible, and the desperation and panic he felt after her final wish and he realised the price it had exacted hurt my heart.
Loved experiencing this all from Desmond’s POV and I am looking forward to getting stuck into the final book in this brilliant series.

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. Desmond's backstory was really interesting and I liked that Laura Thalassa chose to write a novella of it, instead of shoving everything in the other books. There's too much important information that probably wouldn't fit well in the main books. Also, I always like reading my favourite scenes from another character's POV. Particularly, the romantic interest's POV.

I absolutely did not want a novella, I wanted the third book. But I am so glad I got the novella. It did feel very rushed, but that is a novella. I wanted more stories of Des but I will gladly take what I can get. His history was heartbreaking and it truly does show you why he is the way he is. Read this series you will love the King of the Night as much as me.

Rating: 4/5, Spice: 1/5 This was the book I didn't realize I needed to bring me back on board with this series. Des is a love interest that has been difficult for me to embrace. I didn't understand his motives beyond the mating bond. I struggled to understand who he was, why he did the things he did, why he chose to help Callie, and when his feelings for her became more. This book answered all of those questions for me.

Part I: Before Callie
This section of the book gave more insight into Des than the previous two books did combined. His early childhood and adolescent experiences go a long way in explaining the bravado, the machismo, and the secrets that define Des. One of the most surprising revelations for me was learning that that Des was initially angry that he was fated to a human mate and spent years avoiding the prophecy. It provides an explanation as to why Des was known for bedding, but not courting Fae women. He knew no fae women were his mate and he didn't want a human mate. I liked the conversation he had with a human woman that changed that for him. By the time part II begins he's been actively searching earth as The Bargainer to find his mate for over 200 years and all of a sudden The Bargainer has become a very romantic character.

Part II: Meeting Callie
Part II answered a lot of the questions that I've had since the first book. Why did Des help Callie that first night? When did he recognize the mating bond? When did his feelings towards her turn romantic? Getting the answers to these questions have been the missing pieces in this series for me. I know how Des feels in the present but only knowing Callie's version of the past left a lot of gaps in their story. I needed this perspective.

Part III: Present
Des tried to get to Callie every single day during their 7 years apart and be still my beating heart. Waiting for her, taking no lovers, hoping that when the day came she would forgive his absence. It's the vulnerability he shows in these moments of the book that make him seem so much more human.

I'm glad to be going into book 4 with a better understanding of Des. Hoping this series can stick the landing.

Wow this was a rollercoaster and I’m conflicted on how I feel about it.

On one hand, the first half was really great. We got to see Des before he ever met Callie and it was super interesting. I enjoyed it a lot and I thought this might shape up to be the best book in the series despite the fact that it’s a novella. The writing was also better. It felt more like a novel and less like a fanfic which I appreciated. I wasn’t cringing nearly as much.

On the other hand, the second half was horrible. I think I just don’t like the romance. I did in Rhapsodic from Callie’s pov, so I had hoped I would in this too since it has some scenes from that book just in Des’s pov instead of Callie’s. Turns out I did not. At all. It felt very child predator like and I was extremely uncomfortable. Some of the things Des did or thought I hated. There was almost a point where I DNFed it got that bad.

I’m also not sure of my feelings about Des. There were some parts, mainly in the first half, where I liked him. There were also parts where I wanted him to legitimately die because that’s the only way this book would become good. Spoiler alert, he did not so I hated it. He got on my nerves in the second book but I never despised him. I’m starting too though and I’m not happy about it.

Gave it a two for the first half. Otherwise this was trash and not the good kind.

This is a novella where we get to see things from Desmond's point of view, starting from the time he hides with his mother all the way up until the end of the second book. While this isn't a cohesive story since it has over 200 years to cover (so it's only a bunch of important fragments we get to see), it still kept my interest. Especially his early years that we never got to read before because they happened before the first book. Once it caught up to the timeline of the first book it was a little less interesting perhaps, but I'm still definitely looking forward to the third book.

ARC generously provided by author in exchange for an honest review

So, this approx. 200 pg. novella was a 5-star slice of magic and a little naughtiness ;)

My take: So far, in this series we've have mostly gotten Callie's POV for all the action that has taken place. Des, the enigmatic Bargainer, especially in Book 1 has been this opaque, elusive character that I love "till darkness dies" but one that I can't quite get an accurate reading on. Reading this novella, completely in his POV, was such a treat and it was interesting to get into his mind and see how he views the world around him. Not all the plot revolves around Callie + Des and we actually get quite a lot of backstory and history of the Bargainer. In a way, he is a much more nuanced character, and I feel going into book 3 this is needed.

The writing is great. Laura Thalassa has this way of making me both laugh and cry within the same chapter. The jokes are hilarious, the highs high, and the lows low.

This is great installment to tide me over to Book 3 and I know lovers of Callie, Des (and Laura's writing in general) are going to highly enjoy this novella.

Being in Desmond Flynn’s head was just as remarkable and engaging as I had hoped.

What a character.

Seeing the events from “Rhapsodic and “A strange Hymn unfold from Des’s POV, was an amazing addition to the series, and made my love for Des & Callie grow even though I thought it couldn’t get any bigger.

My love for this series is immense.
Truly captivating writing, a thrilling plot, and the most jaw-dropping characters.

That moment when you like the novella more than the whole series

I SAD WHAT I SAID
*now don’t come @ me pls*

I loved how we get not to only experience certain events from the main books through Des eyes, but also learn more about his past.

His mother was such a badass; too sad we didn’t had the chance to read more about her - would have absolutely loved that.
Also, reading about his friendship with Malaki is just really wholesome (let’s also appreciate the fact that we get to read about the event where Malaki loses his eye - and the reason behind it)🤧

If I’m being honest, I found the first two thirds of the book more enjoyable and intriguing (‘cause by the end we’re back at dealing with the Thief of Souls), since the events that took place were *obviously* not mentioned in the original series.

The novella could have easily been around 300-400 pages; was expecting to read about Des adventures and life in more detail tbh (the dude is around what, 250+ years old, do you blame me??).
Just learning more about Des, his upbringing and struggles, was something I found to be more entertaining than every Callie’s thought that I (was ✨forced to) read lmaooo
*which is quite sad when you think about it, buT ANYWAYSS-*

Oh right, almost forgot to mention this -> I absolutely loooved those few scenes where Des just has a short conversation with his shadows; some were funny heh

When it comes to rating this, my brain couldn’t decide on it and in the end the rating ranged from 3.5 to 4.5 star; the jumping between years as it is nothing (we go from 270 to 250 years before Callie real quick - there’s a couple more ‘jumping examples like this) is what really bugged me, since as I have already said, I was expecting m o r e.

We really just scratched the surface with this novella but it was waaay better executed than the rest of this series sooo I‘ll reward that☺️

there really wasn't anything to this book. if you're going to write a novella about a des' past don't make a lot of the second book about callie finding out about des. we already knew pretty much everything that happened in the first half of this book.

the second half was just pointless.. literally the rhapsodic but from des' pov and few extra scenes which i hate.

Loved it! Loved seeing Desmond's POV and learning about his early life. I feel that I know him so much better now! It was a great fix for my 'Bargainer' series addiction whilst waiting for the next book to come out.

This book. This series. At some point I’m going to try to make coherent sense of why I love this so much. But for now, on to the next book!

Realizing how long Des has been searching for Callie.... my heart was not prepared. I mean I knew, but I didn't know, yanno? Being inside his head made me like these books a lot more.

OMG! I read this in just a few hours! I am more in love with Des than I was at the end of The Strange Hymn. I now understand so much more about his character.

Finishing this book made me even more anxious for Dark Harmony! I am so not ready for this series to be over but I need more Des in my life! :D
