She calls the Empire home. He pledges to bring its downfall.

Death is Velamir’s close acquaintance. As a student in the Chishman academy, he cannot escape the brutal war. When he’s sent on a mission with three fellow academy cadets, Velamir returns to the Empire, the land of his birth. Calamity befalls the group as they trek through enemy territory, and Velamir learns a part of his past that makes the mission far more personal. Burdened with the deaths of the unavenged and the chance of losing his own life, Velamir must decide if revenge is worth the cost.

Natassa knows her role well: The silent and obedient girl. The one who looks away from the torture her father, the emperor, inflicts on the Empire’s inhabitants. The princess. But she’s a shackled prisoner, and somewhere under the mask is a spark of rebellion. When she learns of her father’s intention to marry her to a man she loathes, Natassa crafts a risky plan of her own—one dangerous enough to get her killed.

Two searching hearts. Two perilous paths. Velamir must find the courage to face his past and Natassa must find the strength to face herself before the war consumes them both.

I’ll preface this review by saying that I received Israh Azizi’s novel “Heroes of the Empire: Book 1: The Cavalier as a giveaway from ŷ and Page Turner Press. Thanks to both for the free copy.

I’ve been burned in the past by independent and vanity press publications. Most of them look like they are independently published-atrocious cover art, marginless text, ugly font that looks like it came off a workplace printer-which, to be fair, isn’t a reason to dislike the book. What usually seals the deal is that it is coupled with god-awful writing-stale plots, cardboard characters, and thinly-veiled proselytizing of a political agenda.

So, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from Israh Azizi’s young adult fantasy novel, “Heroes of the Empire: Book 1: The Cavalier (henceforth simply called “The Cavalier), despite the fact that I was quite enamored by the beautiful cover art and intrigued by the fact that it had a gold embossed “Book Fest Award Winner emblem on the cover.

I’ll be honest: I’ve never heard of The Book Fest, but I looked it up, and it appears to be a legitimate organization of writers and readers online where authors can submit their books to be judged in different categories every Spring and Fall. It seems to specialize in vanity publishing. Azizi’s “The Cavalier won a first place award in the YA fantasy/action-adventure category.

All well and good, but I’m not one to necessarily be taken in by accolades and awards.

All of this is a prelude to this sentence: I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did.

“The Cavalier brought me back to a time in my early book-reading days when the act of reading was like an extreme sport. It took me back to when I first discovered that books could open doors to whole new worlds. It made me reconnect with why I love reading in the first place.

The novel is a well-constructed fantasy world with fully-developed characters. It is “A Game of Thrones meets “A Knight’s Tale. There are elements of Narnia, Middle-Earth, Star Wars and “The Hunger Games, among other subtle references that allude to the books that Azizi clearly has read and loved.

She has created a believable protagonist in Velamir, a warrior-in-training for a war between four kingdoms. He has been trained, from a very young age, to believe that he is fighting on the side of justice. He believes he is one of the good guys.

Natassa is the daughter of the Emperor. She has begun to understand that her father is not the just and kind ruler that his people seem to think he is.

Two characters on opposite sides of a war will cross paths and re-shape an uncertain future for their world.

I truly loved this book, and my only complaint is that I have no idea how long I have to wait for the second book. Keep writing, Ms. Azizi!

It has been a long time since I read a good book like this. Plenty of action with a sprinkle of romance (chefs kiss). It’s one of those reads that you get all wrapped up in and don't want to finish. Literally, I could see that the end was nearing, and I almost stopped reading it so I could savor the story a little while longer (haha I'm hopeless). Love the storylines of the two MC's, but I need some more Moralie (obsessed at this point). Creative world building (loved the map), use of magic was refreshingly different and realistic, family dynamics and politics were well developed. Being a horse lover, I really loved the horse related situations and relationships. I need the second book asap. I'm literally thinking about drawing fan art at this point. That's the only way I can cope with the wait❤️‍.

Five-star debut for me. Exciting read with plenty of action/adventure and an appropriate amount of respectable romance. Loved the medieval atmosphere, sword fighting, archery, and jousting. Gripping character driven storyline causing me to really connect with the characters and their deep complex back stories. It was so well written, that I re-read it to enjoy the details and pick up on gems I missed the first time through. A definite must read for boys, girls, teenagers and anyone who likes a fun ride. Looking forward to the second in this series or any future releases by this author. I would like to thank NetGalley and the Publisher for allowing me to read this book for an honest review.

Wow! I was really looking forward to reading this book and it did not disappoint! Buddy read this with my new book bestie. I would like to start by saying that this is an indie book, and it is the first in the series by a really talented new author Israh Azizi.

I can't get enough of the characters in The Cavalier. They were so complex and enjoyable to read. Loved their relationships and really felt their struggles. Very realistic, relatable situations and interactions. The MMC was yearning to do the right things all the while wondering if what he was doing was wrong especially when it came to revenge. The FMC was a realistic and believable character clouded in shadows, treachery and cruelty. They both had to overcome how they were trained to be as individuals and make their own decisions as to the outcome of their future. There were more completely awesome characters besides the main ones that absolutely stole my heart (Jax).

The book has a medieval fantasy setting which centers around this amazing world the author built. Great detailed map in the beginning as well as a guide to all the characters. There are intricate details in customs between the conflicted regions as well as clothing styles, appearances and languages. Dying for the formality of the words exchanged at the news of a death, "Their pain is no longer, their glory remembered." Which is countered with, "Their name stronger, their honor forever." This is only a custom in the Empire which is really made evident as the story continues. The two main warring groups have their own salutes, the Imperial half heart over their chest and the Tariqin forearm clasp over their branded skin reinforcing their dedication to Lord Prolus's cause. Ugh, I could go on and on...it really read like a classic fantasy for me, which I loved.

Plenty of action and plotting. Very political involving kings, princes, princesses, generals, galvasirs, assassins, decoys, bodyguards, mercenaries and an amazing magic system that is so believable. There are doers, seers, and lures. Kind of like chosen possession with cool gifts that ultimately kills the person. I really want more of this in the next installment it is absolutely intriguing. Lots of poison and potions as well.

For those of you who enjoy animal companions as I do, there are numerous horses mentioned and very much involved in the story. As I can tell so far in this series is that there are different types of horse breeds in specific regions of the world suitably bred for that area. Also, for those who enjoy a little monster action, there is the Karakhan which is definitely a fearsome beast to say the least.

This is the first book in the series so book one is usually setup where we are introduced to everything and get the story rolling. In my opinion, the main objectives of the series are the fulfillment of a prophecy and to acquire the golden crown of immortally. This will yet be revealed in future books, and I am so looking forward to it.

LOVED this book! I actually read it twice before reviewing it. If you like character driven stories than this one is for you. The book has a wonderful map and a very useful pronunciation guide right in the beginning. Gosh, I loved the conflicted characters and all the dynamics and interactions between all of them, which only blossomed even more the second read. I have to be honest that the author made me laugh out loud and cry more than once. I developed such a connection to these characters that I didn't want the story to end. But, I am also excited that this is a series that I can continue to enjoy and have something to look forward to. This book was recommended to me (thank you) and I recommend it to all those who enjoy real storytelling. I bought my copy on Amazon.

Buddy read this book. Highly recommended young adult action/adventure. Medieval atmosphere. Full of fun relatable characters and a great fantasy world. Plot centered on finding an elusive golden crown with mystical powers which is the root cause of all the power struggles and war. The Cavalier is the first book in the Heroes of the Empire Series by Israh Azizi.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this debut. As someone who reads and enjoys series, this is a great beginning. I connected with the characters and found the worldbuilding fascinating. Will purchase this for my teen boys and niece to read. It's something I would have loved when I was growing up. Excited to see where this series goes. Not, what you expect... morally gray characters, warrior academy, hidden powers, unique magic system, doppelgangers, damsel in distress, political/royal intrigue, slow burn, medieval world, coming of age explosion. Action and adventure, plot twists, cliff hanger ending, fine line between good vs. evil, awesome world building and a wonderful map! Classic fantasy. I re-read this book and am looking forward to the next.

By simply reading the blurb I grasped a hint of what to expect. The cliche Hero and Damsel in distress princess. A typical theme in fantasy books. Despite this, I was pleasantly surprised by what I also received. Characters with depth, characters with promise. And what I didn't anticipate was a wonderfully original world. The unique customs mentioned and the different kingdoms and lands. I applaud the thoughtful world building.

Now for the pros and cons. I prefer receiving negative new first so here goes...

The ending frustrated me because of the cliffhanger. I wanted more. There was an epilogue but not enough to sate me.

The villains are a particularly difficult part to judge. I hated some, was irritated by others. The fact that most of them weren't just the classic villain without reason was something I appreciated. Villains with realistic backstories enthrall me.

The setting, while enjoyable was slightly under described. I need full vivid color to picture. The author clearly has a lot of potential, so I have high hopes for future books being more descriptive.

Pros

Pacing. It wasn't too rapid or slow. The book drew me in until I didn't do what I normally do as I read and repeatedly check my progress.

Characters weren't cardboard cutouts that I couldn't tell apart. They varied from each other, and all had motivations.

Romance. While there was the occasional spark, it was a clean read. I would have no problem recommending to young family members.

A pleasant read overall and a nod to NetGalley for the ARC copy in return for genuine feedback.

Five Star Debut!!! Love this book so much right from the beginning. Awesome cover, killer map and an amazing pronunciation guide. Love the dedication. I make an effort to support Muslim authors and indie authors which, in this case, happens to be both. Realistic and relatable characters that are fully developed. The FMC is strong throughout her struggles and keeps fighting even though everything is against her. We need more heroines like that! Not overpowered in an unbeatable way, but strong in a human way. So beautiful and refreshing to read. The MMC has my heart, literally (quite the hero) and all the other characters are amazing with their good, or bad, or mysterious ways. I am so happy I found this book because it is my favorite right now and probably forever. I really can't wait for the series to continue. This book is a MUST READ for anyone into real character driven storytelling with epic action and adventure. I can see why it is winning awards. Highly recommend!!!

This book easily landed a 5 star on my end, the relationships between characters could win awards, the characters themselves got me extremely attached, and the politics in this one were complicated, intricate and so well written.
I did feel like more should have been done on the angst end of the book, but honestly everything else covered for that, the characters were very lovable and the medieval aesthetic was on point for me!
I'm very excited for book 2!
Thanks to the lovely author @israh_azizi and the team of @katieandbreypa for providing me with an ecopy of this book for reviewing!

I finished this fantasy story last night and let me just tell you, I’m dying for the sequel 🙌 while the plot and world building were fascinating, my favorite thing about this story was the characters. I loved that the story was told through multiple points of view, and I also loved that each character had a rich, deep backstory. The slow revelation of backstories throughout the POVs was masterfully done. It helped to keep me engaged and encouraged me to continue turning the page to unravel each character’s history.

Highly recommend if you’re looking for a unique, character driven fantasy with a dash of romance! 😍

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

In my opinion, this book is undoubtedly deserving of a remarkable⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating.

Having just finished the story, I must say that I am eagerly anticipating the release of the sequel. As someone who takes pleasure in reading series and immersing myself in them, this particular one has captured my heart. I would like to make a personal request to the author to publish the sequel as soon as possible. 😊

This story is a complete package, encompassing elements such as:
👉 a cruel father
👉 obsession
👉 politics
👉 a forced betrothal
👉 betrayal
👉 cure and sweet romance
👉 mystery
👉 villains

I became extremely attached to all the characters, and the relationships between them are noteworthy. I particularly enjoyed the medieval aesthetic, which included sword fighting, archery, jousting, and so on. The backstories of the characters were skillfully revealed. Israh has proven herself to be one of the best authors of young adult fantasy. I am eagerly anticipating the continuation of the story.

I highly recommend this book to all lovers of young adult fantasy.

Title: Heroes of the Empire
Author: Israh Azizi
Series: Book 1: The Cavalier
Rating: ☆☆☆☆

This debut book was a five star read, hands down!!! I can't begin to say enough amazing things about how well written this book was. Azizi didn't spare any expense when it came to the details and mechanics of this wonderful world of Kings, Queens, war and magic. I don't think I could have wanted or asked for a better, well thought out and executed book.

I also applaud Azizi because when I signed up for this arc I thought I was getting a regular if not cliche Hero and damsel in distress type of story but it ended up being so much more. I loved that the villains of this story weren't cliche and had their own unique backstory which was so refreshing. I loved that the characters had so much depth. I was completely enthralled with the unique magic system and enjoyed learning about the shadows man's and their abilities.

I think a lot of authors struggle when writing their first book because well it's their first book but it doesn't seem that Azizi struggled at all. I felt as if I could see the entire world and characters laid out in front of me perfectly. I think this is going to be one of my favorite fantasy series and I'm so happy that I got to read it as an arc. I cannot wait to read book two. If there is one book you read that I recommend this year... read Azizi's Heroes of the Empire, you will not regret it!

Many thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Worldbuilding

The worldbuilding in this book was very interesting. I loved how different places were mentioned in small details instead of long info dumps. I would have appreciated a more thorough description of the setting but seeing as this is the first book, we will probably get more info in the future.

Characters

I absolutely loved the characters. They were full of life, and I could relate a lot with the MC. Their struggles and pain could be felt, and I was completely immersed in their journeys. I'm a fan of multiple POV's so that was a treat!

Pacing

The book started a little slow for me, but I continued reading it improved greatly until I couldn't set it down. The chapters began to shorten towards the end adding to the desperation in the events taking place.

Magic System

A very unique Magic System. I enjoyed learning about the Shadow Manos and their abilities.

Overall, I found this to be a delightful story! Iwas especially impressed with it seeing that it is a debut novel. I will be looking forward to reading more in this series.

My rating: 5 stars

Re-read December 2023
This is like a bazillion stars always. Even more incredible, awe-inspiring, and immersive than I remembered. I can't believe it's taken me this long to re-read it, but what a better time than with the release of the second book! What an absolutely astounding, gritty, and beautifully written masterpiece. The characters are some of my most favourite of all time, they're so raw, complex and beautifully, tragically human to their core, facing a war that's been passed down for generations, and just trying to find their space in the world that's never quite completely truthful with them. Deliciously twisty, and multi-layered, I can't get over how gorgeous and amazing this high fantasy world is, and I cannot wait to delve into book two.

CW// spoilers ahead!

Wow! This absolutely blew me away. I'm truly at the mercy of Israh.

Heroes of the Empire follows Velamir and Natassa. After being found abandoned at four years old, and saved from the empire's rule, Velamir is adopted by General Winston and sent to the Chisman Academy to become an elite soldier for Lord Prolus. Brought up with intentions to maintain the peace and tranquillity amongst the eight kingdoms, Velamir and three of his academic rivals and somewhat friends are sent on a mission to infiltrate and weaken Empire Malus's control. Natassa is the daughter of savage and ruthless Empire Malus. Brought up to be quite, obedient and amiable to the whims of her father, she shows a quiet strength of rebellion. Suffocated and punished within her own home, and chained to a man she despises, Princess Natassa is determined to escape these shackles even at the risk of her own life.

The book actually starts with a pronunciation guide which is absolutely amazing, and something all fantasy books should have! Now let's chat about some of the characters, because they were unforgettable, detailed, complex and just amazing.

Velamir has a gentle heart, who is against killing needlessly despite the teachings of the Chishma's, he has strength, tenacity and resilience, holding strongly to his morals and humanity in spite of being trained to be a ruthless and blood thirsty soldier of Prolus. His love and care for his best friend Jax was wonderful to read, he shows true loyalty and bravery standing up for him, and consistently being beside his side. Velamir's development was an absolute joy to see, battling his own insecurities but consistently standing up for any injustices he sees, protecting innocents even when it poses a threat to his life.

Jax, aww this man is a gentleman and completely owns my heart, Jax keeps hold of his sense of humour even in times of pain towards himself. He's full of compassion and kindness for people and animals, and is a certified hopeless romantic. Due to his nature of being a Shadow Manos, who are often avoided due to their abilities being seen as witchcraft, he has often been at the receiving end of pain and anguish from others within the academy. Being a Doer Shadow Manos means that when his shadow appears, his normal abilities are enhanced including his strength and mind, but the shadow often comes and goes when it wants, and Jax doesn't feel particularly blessed. He battles the suffocation, manipulation and control that the shadow brings each time it appears, knowing that one day the shadow will completely take over his body and mind. Jax is an incredibly interesting character, with a heart full of love and compassion for those around him.

Next we have Princess Natassa, daughter of Emperor Malus, who also has a very gentle and compassionate heart but is ready for battle and determined to get her voice back. After years of being submitted to abuse and punishments from her father in response to her not following his orders or whims, Natassa has had enough. Her relationship with her older brother Thorsten was tender and heart warming, it seemed to give her strength to keep going, and it's clear how much love and affection the two have for one another. They both care deeply about others and show great integrity and honour in protecting and providing for some of the more targeted and affected people. Their grit, perseverance and strength was really admirable to read, in spite of the consequences that would befall them if their father ever found out. Their relationship is definitely one of my all time favourites, the love they hold for one another is palpable. Being stuck inside with just her handmaidens for company and occasionally her brother, Natassa is very isolated and lonely, battling with her father's decision to marry her off to Prince Drayven of Ayleth, someone who repulses her and unnerves her down to her core, with his callousness and disregard for anyone lower than him. Feeling like she's drowning in a kingdom that's falling, with no independence and say over her own life, Natassa is determined to change her destiny, she is brave, with quiet strength and resilience.

Her father, Emperor Malus is a savage, cutthroat and ruthless dictator, who shows very little regard for human life, even for those who fight loyally for him. He has no care or love for his children except to drill them into becoming second versions of himself, however he sees fit.

There was so much going on in this book, and I adored every single page. It completely surpassed my expectations, I felt fully immersed and engaged throughout, and I love the fact that the characters are full of heart and depth, and considering there's many throughout, that's a hard feat to achieve but it was written beautifully and was so smooth. It has multiple POV's from various different characters perspectives but I didn't find this to be a hinderance at all.

The characters and the world building was incredible and fully realised. It was really devastating to read all the pain and suffering each have had to go through, throughout this war that seems never ending. It's definitely an emotional rollercoaster, so if you're picking this one up, be aware! There were so many twists that were just gut wrenching and shocking that I was in floods of tears. Moral of the story: don't get attached to any characters... EVER. Despite this, the pain and hardship, personal or otherwise, that the characters go through feel genuinely realistic and relatable, or at least easy to understand to a deeper extent. Their actions all have consequences that actually stay consistent, which is one thing I rarely find in books like this, it was refreshing but heart-breaking at the same time to witness them coping with these consequences. Even the deaths, where some characters die with unfinished business that will never be able to be resolved, is much more lifelike and relatable than most, but then you have to deal with the crushing and devastating impacts of reading that.

The way that each chapter helps you delve deeper into each character's backstory, and things start to slowly start to become clear, it really helps you become attached to them and understand their journeys to a better extent. I found this was really captivating, and compelling. These personal journey's often take various twists and turns whilst the characters slowly come to terms with what's happening, and they fight with their instincts, morals and upbringing to see the situation in a new light, and figure out where their loyalties truly lie within a kingdom that's tearing itself apart.

Ends on a cliff-hanger that hooked me completely, I am ecstatic for the next one, I'm in too deep already, I will be waiting patiently (or not so) for the next instalment :)

I got major Lotr and Game of Thrones vibes and was completely obsessed with it. Overall, I just adored this book. It really highlighted the quiet strength of an individual and how important and powerful that strength can be, particularly in crumbling and warring empires. Jam packed full of action, tension, betrayals, revenge, love, grief, epic battles, characters who are unforgettable and you cannot help but fall in love with and a splash of magic. Definitely one of my favourite reads this year, and you can be sure I'll be sprinting to the next one when it's released.

It’s amazing how much power can corrupt people. Heroes of the empire really highlights how power hungry men cause war. Both sides are ultimately both corrupted, while the next generation fights against the programming they’ve endured from these leaders. It’s harder to see things logically when you’ve been snatched as a child and raised to be a killer as Velamir and Jax have been, but they still seem to have the hearts longing for peace and the will to think for themselves emerging. Winston is an odd duck and you can never tell where is true loyalties lie. Natassa has truly been raised by a monster of a human and a piss poor excuse of a king. That he would torture his own daughter from childhood, not to mention his sons who are meant to take the throne, is abhorrent. Natassas mother really should’ve been the one in power, her understanding of being both powerful, kind, and inspiring loyalty in your people by your benevolence is truly the way it should be. Natassa fully grasps her mothers imparting wisdom even in the face of abuse that could have turned her cold. Her handmaidens/body doubles/guards are interesting, the dichotomy of the twins and how they feel about not only their position but Natassa herself is a strange thing to witness. Prince Draven is repugnant completely detestable in every possible way. Velamirs parents have been a question for me from the beginning, as neither he or the readers really saw their demise in a clear way. Which also begs the question, were they aware of where he was the entire time and let it happen or were they injured or imprisoned not knowing of their son’s whereabouts/wellbeing. The real world implications that the empire and the Tariqi army share with our world leaders is that the longer the man is in power the more corruption breeds in not only the leader but his council as well. There’s an argument to be made for term limits in there, but I’d rather focus on the fantasy world since it’s not as depressing and there’s still hope in the spark that’s been shown in Velamir, Jax, Natassa, Honzio, Thorston, Krea, Coralie and such. I’m so invested in their futures at this point and I can’t wait for the continuation of their stories.

“The Cavalier is book one of the Heroes of the Empire by Israh Azizi. It is a teen/young adult fantasy read that revolves around medieval courts, betrayal, mysticism, and empire battles.

General Winston has sent Velamir, as his adoptive son, to the Chishman Academy for training. Most of the cadets have no one to call family and they never will. They are in the academy for one reason- to become Chishmans, the elite soldiers in Prolus’s force. Velamir is a fast learner who quickly develops his skills and masters his emotions to become an unflinching nightmare to any hostile. He knows he is expected to sacrifice his desires for the good of Tariqi. After graduating from the academy, he finds himself tasked by General Winston with the frightening mission of making the world a better place by invading the indecent Empire Kingdom and killing a top-ranking General.

Well, now I know the definition of the word terrifying.
These words by Velamir’s colleague, Jax, tell of the nature of a mission that prompts utmost disguise and agility for survival’s sake. The protagonist is determined not to fail, but the deep revelations he will encounter may quickly send him trotting down that path. Saddled with the weight of unavenged cessations and the possibility of yielding his own life, he must thoughtfully decide if taking the life of the adversary is practical.

This volume introduces a long list of characters in the opening pages, each of whom has been given enough freedom to shine, without interfering with the main character’s build and space. Apart from Velamir, another major character, Natassa is featured, through whom readers discover the true nature of a powerful governor, who happens to be her father. Loyalty is a major theme, and readers will love the supporting legendary tales.

Though the book is over five hundred pages, it has been written with utmost precision to bring out the slightest thought, emotion, and activity, and make for a smooth reading experience that does not slack in between the pages. “The Cavalier is a remarkable purchase for teen boys and girls to read. I am sure that most readers will enjoy the adventure around Velamir, and will want to see where this series goes. Highly recommended!

The Cavalier is a YA fantasy read written by Israh Azizi that is told impeccably through multiple points-of-view but does come with a trigger warning for blood, violence, and death. That said, this is the start of an epic new series. The story has all of the elements for a compelling fantasy plot, as it takes place in a massive world filled with political intrigues and revenge. Don’t be intimidated by the word count, because once you get the hang of the character names and locations, you find yourself reading the final chapter before you even know what’s happening. There’s also a map and I adore books with maps!

Meet Natassa. The role she plays is that of the silent and obedient girl. The one who looks away from the torture her father, the emperor, inflicts on the Empire’s inhabitants. The princess. Cue the flip side. She’s a shackled prisoner who learns of her father’s intention to marry her to a man she loathes. It really makes you think of all the times you got mad at your parents for not letting you do the smallest things thank goodness I got to marry someone I love! I feel for Natassa and cheered her on with the turn of every page.

Meet Velamir. A student in the Chishman academy, he cannot escape the brutal war.

A round of applause for the character development seen throughout the story and Azizi tackles the coming-of-age theme well. There are life lessons experienced and taught through pride and perseverance, with the added progression of wisdom. This is a real yet beautifully written story that is worth the emotional rollercoaster; I haven’t been this drawn to a fantasy world since I first read Harry Potter. Azizi wrote characters that were original yet vibrant and ’d love to see a little enemies-to-lovers action. I cannot wait for the next instalment!

The Cavalier is such an enchanting, edge of your seat fantasy novel. Israh has built such an amazing world that is on the cusp of war between those loyal to the empire and those who want to see it fall. With a secret prophecy, that the Princess rebels and shares, what will come of the empire? I need to know!!! 😱😂

Our two main characters, Princess Natassa and Telamir, each have their own complex story that leaves you desperate to learn more about each of them. The plot is quick paced, the characters are incredibly well written, and that ending 😬🙃. I absolutely cannot wait for the release of book 2, as this has easily become a new favorite fantasy series for me!

I absolutely love this book with all of my heart.
Firstoff, the world-building is amazing. The author writes with so much detail. I love the world which the story places in. It is kind of medival with all the sword fighting, the kingdoms and I love it. You also get a lot of information of the politcal systeems. I was a little scared when I saw all the characters but the book is so written that it isn't confusing and you get to know each and every one. The author has a talent of written dialogues and interactions between characters. Every character has their own story, backgrounds and beliefs. I didn't know with who I should side with and that me intrigued. I love the changing of the povs and how the story of Natassa and Velemir are first self-contained and then they come together beautifully. You get to know both sides of their story.

I like the ending, but the cliffanger... I want to know what happens next!

From the first few pages, I could tell this author had a talent for storytelling. The worldbuilding was great and being able to reference a map of the Karalik Empire as well as have a pronunciation and character guide is really helpful when going into a new fantasy novel. This book was told in 3rd person and has multiple POV's throughout. All the POV's were enjoyable and I didn't necessarily dislike any specific POV. This is a good story for those who are more into adventure stories with action scenes with only a slight hint of romance that doesn't overpower the story. Does leave in a cliff hanger. But I am excited for what is to come next in this series!

Awesome dive into the first book of Heroes of the Empire young adult series. Devoured the conflicted protagonists' journeys in this coming of age story. Which one is the hero and which one is the enemy? Loved to hate some characters and hated that I loved some characters because now I have to wait for the next book. Fast paced read that kept me hooked until the end.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

5/5 stars! WOW! This is a stunning start to the “Heroes of the Empire. I really appreciated the depth of Velamir and Natassa throughout this story. The pacing of the story was a bit slow in the beginning, but that’s common with the world-building in fantasy series. Once the pace picked up, it didn’t slow down for the rest of the story. I am anxiously awaiting the sequel.
