Jostein Gaarder

Jostein Gaarder is a Norwegian intellectual and author of several novels, short stories, and children's books. Gaarder often writes from the perspective of children, exploring their sense of wonder about the world. He often uses meta-fiction in his works, writing stories within stories.

Gaarder was born into a pedagogical family. His best known work is the novel Sophie's World, subtitled "A Novel about the History of Philosophy." This popular work has been translated into fifty-three languages; there are over thirty million copies in print, with three million copies sold in Germany alone.

In 1997, he established the Sophie Prize together with his wife Siri Dannevig. This prize is an international environment and development prize (USD 100,000 = 77,000 鈧), awarded annually. It is named after the novel.

This is the second novel I've read by Gaarder. As an admirer of philosophy, it's not as informative as Sophie's World, but they both manifest Gaarder as a wise writer. This story speaks of love, loss, and meaning. It touches on philosophy and evolution. I like Gaarder's strong non-religious philosophical faith in God which makes an atheist's stance looks ridiculous. As he says, in terms of probability, nothingness would've been far more likely, and I agree. I also like the idea presented in the story of purposeful evolution. It was quite interesting. Castle in the Pyrenees will be my next station with Gaarder. 4 stars for Maya if it didn't have many long tedious details at some points.

Who or what is Maya?

Maya was created by the almighty Brahman, the highest universal principle, the ultimate reality in the Universe.

In the major schools of Hindu philosophy, It is the immaterial final cause of all that exists, and Maya is Its creation and it's identical to him (doesn't this ring a bell around the Holy Trinity?).
The ancient scholar, Adi Shankaracharya stated that Maya is the inexpressible discourse of Brahman and Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa believed that everything including Maya is a face of God.

In Hindu philosophy, the World is an illusion, a piece of Brahman's supreme consciousness, it is just the projection of a false reality created by Maya, a temporary phenomenon that sustains the illusion of our confused existence in a fabricated reality we recognize as True.
In spiritual language, Maya means our recognised "unreality", distinct from the Reality represented by Brahman in Its eternal and absolute aspect of pure consciousness, and Its creation is a mere projection of that consciousness which we accept as reality. It exists as long as there is an independent conscientious observer of the experience, meaning all of us.

The word "maya" also means trickery, fraud or deceit; It refers to all the different forms of illusion that distract and deceive the senses, which have only a limited capacity to perceive and discern truth, but we take those deceptions for granted and trust the appearances of things more than the truth underlying them.

This illusion is a product, either of a random will or the deliberation of a conscious one. Only by cultivating all qualities of goodness can our soul rise to transcendence and be free of the clutches of Maya to escape the "Ilusion" and then be allowed to contemplate True Reality. In other words, this reality we live and recognize does not provide real happiness, which is just an elusive dream. On the basis of this misconception which ties together the hearts of the male and female, one becomes attracted to his body, home, property, children, relatives and wealth. In this way, one increases life鈥檚 illusions and thinks in terms of "I and mine". (Bhagavat Purana 5.5.8)
Plato's famous allegory of the cave was written around 380 BCE and it is believed that he got his inspiration from the Maya concept which is much older.

The overwhelming majority of existing "scriptures" affirm, or defend, that Creation is the game of Divine Consciousness. It manifests itself in infinite different ways and Its essence permeates everything that constitutes the reality that we recognize with the goal, in the End, to absorve everything in Itself, for no apparent and specific reason, because Gods does not do anything with any particular objective or desire that we can understand. Yoga Vashista said: The world is nothing but a mere vibration of consciousness in space. It appears to exist just as a goblin appears to exist in the eyes of the ignorant. All this is just Maya: for here there is no contradiction between infinite consciousness and the apparent existence of the universe. It's like the wonderful dream of a person who is awake.

Maya (the book) is an entangle of physics, philosophy, ecology and cosmology in a convoluted story full of illusions, allusions and delusions; A mix of materialism and spirituality in a declaration of love that unfolds to question the meaning of life, the purpose of the universe and everything in it, including our own connection with the Cosmos.
There exists a World. In terms of probability this borders on the impossible. It would have been far more likely if, by chance, there was nothing at all. Then, at least, no one would have begun asking why there was nothing.

Maya's narrative structure is marked by various shifts in time and perspective to the point of awkwardness. Much of the novel is written in the form of a letter, but other parts are given in a constant-changing "present" as we jump from one character's point of view to a different character's perspective.
Later, we understand that what was depicted in the "letter" was partway false; for example, the main character carries on a long philosophical conversation with a gecko named Gordon (from the Gin) playing both parts of the dialogue, an event which turns out to have been entirely imagined by another character as part of a novel he's writing. There is a couple who continuously exchange out loud some sort of enigmatic philosophical riddles, mainly using the metaphor of a pack of cards combined with theological cosmology and a vague sense of provocation. There's some sort of time travel and spontaneous generation and a mystery around a doppelganger in Goya's paintings.

And a debate, in the background of the story, between Holism, the theory that says that parts of a Whole are in intimate interconnection in such a way that they cannot exist or be understood independently of the Whole, and Reductionism which seeks to isolate the individual components in separateness from the Whole to better understand it. Holism recognizes the importance of considering various factors simultaneously, while Reductionism focuses on isolating single specific elements. It is the case of not seeing the Forest because of the trees or not seeing the Tree because of the forest. To me this is the core of the problem with this book: the trees and the forest are very confusing to the intellectually limited reader that I am. I don't know why but it made me think of Sir Ken Robinson's statement in a Ted Talks lecture:
If a man makes a statement in a forest and no woman is there to hear him, is he still wrong?

As with Gaarder's previous works, Maya asks us Big Questions. The central philosophical question of this book is, "Does life have meaning?". He starts with a strictly scientific viewpoint that states we humans are merely carriers of genes and that there is no greater purpose to life; Then this slowly shifts towards a more esoteric speculation, in which it is suggested that conscious life sprang into existence as a means to produce a consciousness so that the Universe could aknowledge and experience itself, something that James Lovelock explores far better in his "Novacene", and that we are all part of Gaia (Lovelock again), which is a single Organism and a single Soul that encompasses everything that exists, where our alleged free individualism is just an illusion that we, sophisticated primates, fabricated out of our lust in the presumption of our superiority.

Gaarder was a philosophy teacher who became a full-time writer. He effectively provokes thought on his themes. I ponder frequently on many issues he raised.
It is a pity that he isn鈥檛 a better writer; If only his fictional technique were good enough to do justice to his superb concepts he could produce exceptional literary work. As it is, this book is more interesting than captivating, and although the conceptual and philosophical premises on which it's based will interest the novices inclined to ponder the major subjects of Life, the actual story tends to an unfocus and confuse proselytism to convert the already believers.

I found Maya difficult to follow, understand and appreciate. I can only acknowledge this as a book by Josteein Garder because it has his name on the cover. How can this be the same writer that gave us "Sophias World" and "The Orange Girl"?
I see this as a weak fiction work, with its unrealistic characters, and the sloppily constructed plot, but for those who are interested in philosophical questions and Life enigmas, it still is a J. Gaarder book, therefore worth reading.

Jostein Gaarder prepares a cake called "Maya" by mixing Indian Advaita Philosophy with Darwin's theory of Evolution and baking it in an oven at a temperature of intellectual stimulation. After garnishing with a little bit of mystery, he tops it with some romance. The cake is served in a shape of a very very long letter.
Unfortunately, the resultant is so unpalatable that even if you could enjoy the flavour, you don't really like the overall treat. Especially when the chef had earlier given you "Sophie's World", one of the best dishes you had ever had.

Loved these lines the best:

We bear and are borne by a soul we do not know.
When the riddle raises itself on two legs without being solved, it is our turn.
When the dream pinches its own arm without waking, it is us.
For we are the riddle no one guesses.
We are the fairy tale trapped in its own image.
We are that moves on and on without arriving at understanding

An incredibly poetic interpretation of what it means for us, as a species, to be alive in this very moment; a very complex, sometimes surreal, tale summarizing what evolution has given us with, and how we have arrived at this point in the history of the planet, while at the same time showing us the circles that complete our lives as human beings.

隆Larga vida a Ediciones Siruela!

Five stars! No doubt.

Maafkan aku =))

I'm a fan of Jostein Gaarder. That being said, that's one of the worst books that ever got to my hands.

I just couldn't get through ten pages! I never really got to the end and my ex who is also a big fan didn't either. I remember some frogs and a boring beginning.

#2010-28#

Dateline, Taveuni, Maja, Flamenco, Spanyol, Salamanca.

I had high hopes with this one. After all, Gaarder was the man who penned one of the modern classics that is Sophie鈥檚 World.

And he didn鈥檛 disappoint me. Maya is definitely a worthy successor to the likes of Sophie鈥檚 World and Vita Brevis. Staying true to his calling, he takes us in a tour-de-force of hard philosophical questions that were difficult to imagine, - let alone deliberate, by anyone alone. This, - I think, is where his greatest influence is supposed to be : in his provocations where one is forced to take a long, hard look at oneself and ponder why is he living at all. Such incitements are necessary because by default, man always strive to fulfil, but not question, his needs.

Focusing more to the question of evolution and biology, Maya nevertheless feel a little bit constrained by the love-story plot. This did not become obvious, however, until the last 40 pages or so. A savoring reader thus will not have any problems in immersing into Gaarder鈥檚 typical mental discourses happening all over this book.

What more interesting is his try to take on mystery / thriller genre, - however slight. Granted, in the end the mystery was only used as a device to build the momentum towards climax; but it鈥檚 still intriguing for me that he adopt such an adventurous plan. Not that it didn鈥檛 work. On the contrary, the execution was of such excellence that I was fooled into thinking that this is truly an enigmatic book in the same league as Eco. Now that I had time to think about the issue, maybe it shouldn鈥檛 be surprising at all. I mean, a man who can construct a very exciting verbal scene full of anguish between his human character and a gecko; will surely be able to keep us in his grip in one or two alternate methods.

The epilogue, then, explains all. Only then it became apparent that this is a first and foremost, a love story. A very beautiful and profound love story, for that matter. Yet, I can not help but think that this is also this book鈥檚 weak point. Had Gaarder been more flexible; maybe letting go to the momentum and taking on the metaphysical thriller theme to the end will pay more. It almost feels like a hangover for me : riding so high in the buildup, but then take a sharp ( although admittedly sweet ) drop in the end. It then dictates a necessary evaluation of the question : Should a literary work鈥檚 end justify the means ?

Finally, this book again exhibits Gaarder鈥檚 ability as a storyteller. Bearing that small complain in mind, I鈥檇 still gladly recommend this one. If you don鈥檛 read this book with a critic鈥檚 spectacle, then it鈥檚 truly enjoyable to let yourself go, even swept by some of the finest dialogues I鈥檝e ever read in modern fiction..!!

E s贸 uns segundos a morrer."

like every book by jostein gaarder (one of my all-time favorite authors), "maya" was beautiful and nostalgic. it lectures about life and death in a way that seems poetic enough to deal with and absorb positively. but i found myself, after having read so many jostein gaarder books, that this one did not flow with the ease and rhythmic passion the others have. it felt rather long and droning. i did not enjoy the endless conversations between frank and gordon the gecko, nor the exchanges between frank and jos茅, or frank and john. in fact, john, the plotting matchmaking widower, who features prominently only at the beginning and at the end of the book, felt more relatable to me than frank, whom we follow through the entire book. he was too defeated, and i hated how defeated i felt myself when i read about him, except maybe when he went into his interesting, although extensive, lectures about the big bang and the evolution of the species.
i think my favorite character was laura, the avid reader of "lonely planet", because i don't know quite how to feel about her; she's ambiguous to me, whereas all the other characters either unnerved me or mildly interested me.
the part i enjoyed the most was when, after hearing so many dispersed quotes from the manifesto that reminded me so much of another gaarder book, the connection was finally revealed with "the solitaire mystery", my absolute favorite book by jostein gaarder, and that alignment of the two stories made me immensely happy, although it wasn't a long-lasting feeling. but the manifesto itself felt too much like a copycat of the tiny book from "the solitaire mystery", which revealed to hans thomas things about the past, present and future.
there were some very poetic instances throughout the book, and i've found myself writing down some quotes which i found solemnly beautiful. the ending was nice, albeit rather predictable, and it gave me a sensation of fulfillment, just not as strong and reverberating as previous jostein gaarder books. maybe my expectations were too high, i needed this book to surpass my love for "the solitaire mystery" or "sophy's world", but it didn't quite get there.
but i've found i quite like the name maya now, for all it's implications and meanings.

This is the second Gaarder book I have read, the first being Sophie's World. Other reviews mentioned reading the Solitaire Man was helpful to them, and I wish that I had read it because it would have given the story more meaning.

I enjoy philosophy books, and I loved Sophie's World. I found the evolution speeches by the main character, Frank, very interesting. That's the kind of thing I couldn't read in a textbook, but putting it in a story makes much more sense to me. That being said, there is a large portion of the book where Frank is talking to a gecko who he imagines talks back to him. As a device to write more scientific information it is very creative, but as a plot point I thought it was used too much. I think some of those conversations could have been cut down.

I was also confused about one of the major plot points. It seems there is a mystery, and that was the best part of the book. But the final part of the book is a post script written by a character, John who is a novelist, and the post script ruined the mystery for me and seemed like an easy way out for Gaarder. (That's all I can say without spoilers).

So, I rated this book 3 stars. It doesn't get stars for the storyline, the beginning was slow and the big mystery seemed ruined for me at the end, but it does get stars for Gaarder's articulate descriptions of philosophical biology and the scientific existentialism I think we've all felt at one point or another when we look up at the stars and realize how far away they are and how old they are, and how ephemeral we are in comparison.

What begins as a slow, plodding rumination on not-much-at-all (i.e. repetitive lessons on evolutionary biology and the ramblings of characters you don't yet care about) turns into an intriguing, slow-boiling mystery about life: both backwards and forwards. I found myself riveted once the initial banality dissolved, eagerly speeding through the rest of the book, and by the time I finished the novel even the first 100 pages took on a new, fascinating appeal. It's a bold move for a writer to start with confounding prose that will only make sense in retrospect, but the payoff for any vigilant reader is well-worth the price of admission. I just wish the characters themselves were as finely wrought as the fascinating coincidences.

At some point, I couldnt stop reading. It really made me think about my life and existance. A little bit hard to understand at the beggining, but then all the loose parts start making sense. I recommend it!

鈥楨verything is connected,鈥 Jos茅 said.

Where to begin when discussing a Jostein Gaarder novel? Do we start with the principal characters as suits our expectations for a work of fiction? Or do we begin the big philosophical concepts that Gaarder鈥檚 novels almost always seem to focus on? Or is this a false choice given that humans are, as one character here suggests, 鈥榟yperindividualistic master-mammals鈥 blessed or cursed with a capacity for thinking big thoughts?

The apparent ambiguity comes when a group of visitors from different nations 鈥 Australia, Spain, England, Norway, Italy, the US 鈥 find themselves thrown together on a Fijian island anticipating the approaching new millennium. (Pedant that I am, that changeover point actually arrived at the end of 2000, not the beginning, but no matter.)

Near the 180掳 date-line, where you can have one foot planted in what will be yesterday and the other in what would be tomorrow, one of the narrators at a resort muses 鈥榃asn鈥檛 it a bit strange that almost all the guests at the Maravu went round talking about the same thing? And this indeed is the central enigma that the reader also tries to fathom, continually foiled by a jester-suited figure.

Our focus centres on the two narrators. One is John Spooke, a widowed English author from Croydon; nested within his account is a lengthy epistle from Norwegian evolutionary biologist Frank Andersen to his wife Vera, a palaeo-anthropologist, from whom he鈥檚 estranged following the accident which killed their young daughter Sonja. And appended to these narratives is a so-called Manifesto consisting of obscure aphorisms associated with a childless Spanish couple, Ana and Jos茅. They all have personal stories to tell, stories which form the web of the novel.

But embedded within this weave are all kinds of literary lollipops 鈥 themes, ideas, coincidences, mysteries, clues, science, art, stories, life, death. Many represent the staples that Gaarder revisits in quite a few of the novels of his which I鈥檝e read: cards, card games like Solitaire, the enigmatic Joker; Time and the possibility of the past impacting the future and vice versa, or indeed paralleling it; evolution, biodiversity, humanity鈥檚 effect on the planet; and of course relationships and love whether sexual, familial or platonic. As this novel鈥檚 dedication 鈥 to Gaarder鈥檚 wife Siri 鈥 hints, love between and for both spouse and offspring is an abiding motif.

To be sure, Maya is an uneven novel. There are longueurs in the first half set on the Fijian island of Taveuni as the reader is fed a plethora of details about biology, evolution and the universe; we witness a surreal conversation between the Norwegian and a 鈥榩entadactyl tetrapod鈥, a gecko he calls Gordon and who seems to be a kind of Jiminy Cricket conscience figure. And then there are many references to maya, the Brahman concept of illusion 鈥 or maybe it鈥檚 the Spanish maja, a lower class female but one with attitude, such as a flamenco dancer? What have Goya鈥檚 famous pictures, La maja vestida and La maja desnuda, to do with this conundrum? At.one point the Englishman declares, 鈥榃e are merely fleeting spirits in transition,鈥 and indicating one individual he adds, 鈥楢nd this spirit鈥檚 name is Maya!鈥

We may perhaps feel we are being taken for fools. But when the novel鈥檚 action moves to Spain, to Madrid, Salamanca and Seville, we start to see a way through the obfuscation Gaarder has deliberately created, as themes and motifs begin to coalesce and the reader鈥檚 fog of confusion begins to dissipate. It鈥檚 then that we finally understand some of the allusions in the 52 entries in the Manifesto, such as this, the final one:
It takes billions of years to create a human being. And it takes only a few seconds to die.

Best known as the author of Sophie鈥檚 World (1991), Gaarder followed its success up with The Christmas Mystery (1992), which I found a little less convincing. For a pre-Millennium book Maya was quite positive in its outlook but by the time of The World according to Anna (2013), with its intimations of a worsened climate crisis and a calamitous loss of biodiversity, his tone was considerably darker. I somehow suspect that subsequent novels have remained pessimistic but don鈥檛 doubt that they鈥檙e all trying to say profound things about existence, perhaps along the lines of 鈥 as Jos茅 says 鈥 鈥淓verything is connected.鈥
