He is regarded as one of the most influential鈥攁nd controversial鈥攎inds of the 20th century.
In 1873, Freud began to study medicine at the University of Vienna. After graduating, he worked at the Vienna General Hospital. He collaborated with Josef Breuer in treating hysteria by the recall of painful experiences under hypnosis. In 1885, Freud went to Paris as a student of the neurologist Jean Charcot. On his return to Vienna the following year, Freud set up in private practice, specialising in nervous and brain disorders. The same year he married Martha Bernays, with whom he had six children.
Freud developed the theory that humans have an unconscious in which sexual and aggressive impulses are in perpetual conflict for supremacy with the defences against them. In 1897, he began an intensive analysis of himself. In 1900, his major work 'The Interpretation of Dreams' was published in which Freud analysed dreams in terms of unconscious desires and experiences.
In 1902, Freud was appointed Professor of Neuropathology at the University of Vienna, a post he held until 1938. Although the medical establishment disagreed with many of his theories, a group of pupils and followers began to gather around Freud. In 1910, the International Psychoanalytic Association was founded with Carl Jung, a close associate of Freud's, as the president. Jung later broke with Freud and developed his own theories.
After World War One, Freud spent less time in clinical observation and concentrated on the application of his theories to history, art, literature and anthropology. In 1923, he published 'The Ego and the Id', which suggested a new structural model of the mind, divided into the 'id, the 'ego' and the 'superego'.
In 1933, the Nazis publicly burnt a number of Freud's books. In 1938, shortly after the Nazis annexed Austria, Freud left Vienna for London with his wife and daughter Anna.
Freud had been diagnosed with cancer of the jaw in 1923, and underwent more than 30 operations. He died of cancer on 23 September 1939.

There is one thing that I believe should be fundamentally understood about Freud, whether you like him, hate him, agree with him, or believe he's totally off his rocker: he will not bore you. He may surprise you, frustrate you, make you want to throw his books out of the nearest window and say, "What the absolute hell?". But he will never bore you.
I think Freud is pretty out there. But as a past psych major and a current English major, I find his work, as well as himself, completely fascinating (even when I don't agree with him whatsoever). Disagreeing with the content doesn't make me a hater. It almost makes me love the work itself all the more.
So yeah. 4 stars from me. Bring on the hate anti-Freudians.

Of all the books I've read by Freud (maybe a half dozen?) this is by the far the best in terms of clarity and scope. Freud makes it clear that he wants to be very precise and succinct in his definitions of key psychoanalytic terms (e.g., id, ego, super go, eros, death drive, etc.). Moreover, in the confines of his succinctness he wants to cover as much ground as possible in terms of introducing the reader to the insights of psychoanalysis. Whereas the theory of dreams, the psychopathology of everyday life, and his introductory lectures are all over 500 pages, this book is approximately 90 pages and a good summary of those other larger texts. I'd recommend me this to anyone interested in Freud, and/or psychoanalysis.

I was very curious about its contents, so I quickly read through this short book. My mind felt positively blown after I finished reading it- the distinction and the dynamics between the Id, the ego, and the superego; the split that likely causes psychosis and neurosis. I don't think there can be a better introduction for anyone made curious by Psychoanalysis. There was one part that my mind felt resistant towards- the one that explains the origin and effects of the Oedipus Complex. Instead of fighting the resistance, I chose to not engage too deeply with that bit in the first reading. Just because you don't like sprinkles on your cake does not mean you throw away the entire cake.
I will read it again, this time more intentionally and immersively, perhaps while making notes on the side.

does what it says; i'm generally a hater of late freud but this is such a beautiful and simple recasting of his metapsychology along his second topology (ego/id/superego) and is at once really familiar and new. also that this is probably the definitive statement by freud on metapsychology (as his last writing on it) shouldn't be taken for granted.
also i disagree with the editors of the revised standard edition who took out the ellipsis at the end as i would argue that this was totally unfinished. i feel like a finished version of this would include a second goethe quote ending the last chapter. but that's just me...

A very comprehensive and helpful outline of Freud鈥檚 method of psycho-analysis. Easy to see why he was so influential in the field, but also why he鈥檚 somewhat controversial. He certainly does not take a positive view of human nature, and his approach to therapy is interesting.

Well, I am not equipped to fully understand this book, but I thought it would be a cool and easy-to-read introduction to his theories in psychoanalysis. On the contrary, I got a book with so much analysis which made no sense to me, a casual reader. It was informative and interesting but too complicated. Nothing more than that. It was a well written book, and that's why I gave it 3 stars.
Freud is the "father of psychoanalysis" for a reason. He was a smart, influential man who certainly set the foundation. However, I don't like some of his theories. Especially the fact that he connects everything to sexuality and that us, women, envy men because we don't have a "p". WTF...
I am curious to see more of his work and theories, but I don't know if I will enjoy reading them...

This book was quite hard for me to read - like stated in the preface of the book - it requires prior knowledge about freudian concepts. I've read it in my own language and I learned about the differences in English and Slovenian terminology.
The First part of the book was the most important for me and my lack of knowledge about the concepts. I understand much more what ego, super-ego (part of our psychic apparatus, which internalized our parents/someone on which it was dependant in the past and was outside of psyche itself) and id are, relationships between them, why and how they were created, what is the function of each and what happens when the relationship between them is "skewed". I also understand more how psychoanalysis works and why.

The human psyche, as construed by Freud, comprises, loosely, of three sub-structures 鈥�
The Es or the Id (the unconscious drives that demand release);
The Ich or the Ego (the conscious component one sees as oneself);
The Uber-Ich, or the Super-Ego (the internal judge or critic that the Ich aspires towards)
The Es along with their unconscious organic drives form the core of our being and obey the unrelenting pleasure principle. Over time, as the Es are continually in touch with a dangerous reality, they form a cortical layer called the Ich, in which we are most likely to recognize ourselves.
The Ich is ruled by a consideration for safety and looks to bind the free-flowing Es out of which it has emerged.
The Ich then has to defend itself against a dangerous reality as well as against the all-too demanding internal pressures of the Es. But there is another front where the Ich must defend itself 鈥� the internalized judge or critic that is modeled after parental figures of authority, the Uber-Ich, which can also be called our conscience.
So here we are with a frail Ich (Ego) desperately trying to assert its independence while satisfying the claims of an unbridled world of the inner drives, a dangerous reality, and an internal critic.
We understand why we are so often unable to stop ourselves from crying out: 鈥楲ife is so difficult!鈥� If the Ich is forced to admit weakness it breaks out into fear: objective fear of the external world; conscience-based fear of the Uber-Ich; and neurotic fear of the strength of the passions in the Es.
All neuroses are acquired only in early childhood when the developing Ich defends itself against the three forces, always unsuccessfully for it is ill-equipped and unformed, through attempts at repression. Thus the damage done to the Ich during the first phase of life is disproportionately large, an idea corroborated by the fact that most neuroses can be linked back to early childhood.
Being Freud鈥檚 last work, this was quite a challenging read due in no small part to the depth of his unconventional yet highly illuminating conceptualizations of the psychic content. There a lot of sensitive and contentious ideas such as the Oedipus Complex, penis-envy, the unifying and destructive forces within the libido, and the mechanism and purpose of dreams that are bound to elicit a lot of resistance and controversy (as it has). Safe to say, Freud is an anathema to the feminists. Love him or hate him, it is hard to ignore Freud. One should read with care and an open mind.
My favorite quote: If we throw a crystal to the ground, it smashes 鈥� but not in an arbitrary way: it breaks along its lines of cleavage into fragments whose boundaries may have been invisible, but were nevertheless predetermined by the crystal鈥檚 original structure.

At eighty-two, Freud's writing was as vivid as ever. In this three-part book, he summarizes the ideas he had been writing about for over 38 years. Instead of his usual writing style of proposing ideas and defending them with clinical data, literature review, social events, etc., he just summarizes them into their most basic components. The shift to a description without justification style turns it into a breath of fresh air. The advantage of this change is that one can see the finalized ideas presented by Freud, especially considering he usually goes back and forth with them. The negative side is that if you are familiar with the majority of the work, it tends to seem repetitive.
