From IMDB.com:

Son of a small shopkeeper, he attended Manchester Grammar School. He later said that he made poor uses of his opportunities there. He went to work in an insurance office, but later entered Manchester University, taking a degree in History. A post-graduate year at Exeter University led to a schoolmaster's position, first at a village school in Devon, then for seven years at Millfield. During this time he wrote a dozen radio plays, which were broadcast. Encouraged by the London success of his stage play "Flowering Cherry" he left teaching for full-time writing. 1960 saw two of his plays ("The Tiger And The Horse" and "A Man For All Seasons") running concurrently in the West End.

A Man for All Seasons: a Play in Two Acts, Robert Bolt

A Man for All Seasons is a play by Robert Bolt based on the life of Sir Thomas More.

The plot is based on the historical events leading up to the execution of Sir Thomas More, the 16th-century Chancellor of England, who refused to endorse King Henry VIII's wish to divorce his wife Catherine of Aragon, who did not bear him a son, so that he could marry Anne Boleyn, the sister of his former mistress.

Note, Oct. 8, 2023: I've just corrected a typo in this review --thanks for catching that one, Bionic Jean!

Written in 1960, and first performed in 1961, the historical play A Man for All Seasons focuses on the crisis of conscience posed for Sir Thomas More in the years ca. 1526 until his execution in 1535, as an English public official and internationally known public intellectual and lay theologian, by King Henry VIII's determination to annul his first marriage and subsequent break with the Roman Catholic Church. But although they form the historical backdrop to the action, the specific issues of Papal authority, Christian unity, indissolubility of marriage, and even the claims of Christian faith vs. amoral expediency are not, for the playwright, the central concern here. For Bolt, who was himself an agnostic, the even more basic and central question, which he explores explicitly in his roughly 11-page Preface, is: do we have any essential core part of ourselves that we stand on uncompromisingly, that isn't up for negotiation if surrendering it gets us out of trouble and buys us an easy life? (In other words, we can say the play is about moral integrity itself.) He thinks we should, if we want to be truly human; but he's painfully aware that the great majority of people don't. More, in the final analysis, was patently someone who did, who, even though he didn't court martyrdom and indeed was willing to go to some lengths to sidestep the issue, did ultimately have a line in the sand that he wasn't willing to cross. That's what attracted Bolt to his story, and why he presents it as a thought-provoking exemplar for his fellow humans to ponder.

This play has been at least twice presented/adapted as a movie, once in 1966 with Paul Scofield as More and again in 1988 starring Charlton Heston. I've seen the Heston version; while I haven't seen the earlier one, I've read things about it that indicate that it brings in a lot more characters and material than the 1988 production. Part of my reason for wanting to read the original play was to get an idea of which movie more faithfully followed it. My suspicions are now confirmed that the Heston version is the more faithful one. It differs in some minor particulars (and in one place the positioning of some lines detailing what happened to certain characters at the very end rather than earlier in Act Two, as Bolt's version has them, strikes me as better.) Also, film technology benefits from easier transitions of scenes than is possible in a stage play, especially one with just two acts (Bolt's text has to devote a fair amount of attention to directing the lighting arrangements, movements of props, etc., to set different scenes). Like all plays, this one comes across more powerfully in performance. But even if you've seen a production, it repays a reading.

My reading, for instance, confirmed for me that the character who slips into various minor roles, (as a boatman, for example, or More's steward) and at various points addresses the audience to comment on the action, originates in Bolt's text, not as an invention by the 1988 scriptwriters. His role has affinities to that of the stage manager in Thornton Wilder's play Our Town; but Bolt's Preface indicates that the primary earlier playwright who influenced this play was Bertold Brecht. Not being at all familiar with Brecht's work or dramatic theories, that discussion went over my head; but the Preface is still valuable reading that you don't get from the film. Among other things, it's valuable for explaining the role of this latter character, who's identified in the text as "the Common Man." As Bolt explains, this doesn't mean average "man on the street," but rather a representative of what's "common" to all of us of the species "Man(kind)" --namely, our baser tendency or temptation to deny our inner core of moral integrity in exchange for the purely animal wants of safety and comfort. (Though as a secularist he doesn't like the idea, Bolt ponders briefly whether "It may be that a clear sense of the self can only crystallize round something transcendental....")

If I have a criticism of the play at all, it's of one glaring historical inaccuracy (which the written original shares with the 1988 film). Although Bolt's handling of historical details appears to be mostly sound, and he clearly did some research for this project, he consistently refers to Henry as seeking a "divorce" from Queen Catherine. (Had you said that to Henry, he probably would have had you beheaded.) Like his Catholic opponents, he theoretically deplored divorce; what he wanted instead was an annullment, an authoritative declaration that no valid marriage had taken place with Catherine in the first place, which is legally quite different. But aside from that quibble, either in written or enacted form, this is a powerful, intensely dramatic story skillfully presented, an undeniable crown jewel of the 20th-century British theater. It continues to speak to us in the 21st century --perhaps with heightened intensity, as many of us contemplate the slide of the contemporary Western world towards political totalitarianism and religious persecution with a foreboding that most people in the mid-20th-century cocoon of "American exceptionalism" and certainty that "it can't happen here" wouldn't have been able to imagine.

This was one of my favorite movies growing up. The rapid-fire repartee left me longing for subtitles or 鈥榩ause鈥 and 鈥榬ewind鈥 buttons before I even knew what they were; that鈥檚 how much I hungered to know exactly what was said. Repeated viewings ensured eventual clarity; living in the Catholic city of St. Louis one was sure to catch this on late night reruns several times a year.

The book is a quick read. I polished it off in two long sittings but will read it again. I gobbled it this time, partially because it was so good, but also because I want to share it with my Dad when I go home this weekend.

The book varies somewhat from the movie, as there are some theatrical effects which the movie does away with and grandiose things the movie adds not found in the play. However, the important aspects鈥攖he penetrating dialogue, Sir Thomas More鈥檚 amazing mind and perceptive wit captured so elegantly through Bolt鈥檚 writing鈥攁re all there. Finally! Having just read , St. Thomas More鈥檚 last words, I recognized shades throughout. Need to reread to see if it is there as well.

ENJOY!

This is two gems in one: The play itself is unforgettable, and Bolt's introduction is equally so. As Bolt explains, why did he, a rationalist who is Christian only in the broadest cultural sense of the term, take as his hero a Catholic saint? The answer is More's simultaneous enthusiasm for life in the here and now with his immovable commitment to an idea and to ideals for which it would be no question in his mind to sacrifice the life that he loved so dearly. Bolt thinks that the key lies in More's idea of his self and ponders whether any society without a transcendent basis for the idea of selfhood can generate the kind of commitment that More had. I have my own ideas on selfhood and its importance even if there ends up being no transcendent foundation for individual identity, and I think that even if it turns out to be true that what we call the self is only a temporary assemblage of synaptic connections, the sense of self is a vital element that needs to be individually recognized and explored and delimited before any search for transcendence can be realized. At any rate, I applaud this book, one of my very favorites for decades, and Bolt's introduction. As J.R.R. Tolkien once suggested in his own introductory comments to Smith of Wootton Major, introductions should be read *after* the first reading of the main text; so read the play first, then read the introduction. Then read the play again, and be sure not to miss the Academy Award-winning 1996 movie adaptation, in which Paul Scofield reprised his role in the West End production of the play. Truly a play for all seasons!

A Man For All Seasons is a play concerned with morality, politics and the common man. It is a play that though written decades ago, holds great wisdom for the individual of today and in its own particular way utilises a known historical event to address particular issues.

The core argument of this play is whether morality and law or religion and law must be separated. Whether it should or should not be is a separate debate to this review, however Robert Bolt's argument appears to be that a man or woman must stick to their beliefs. That to do otherwise and to compromise lacks moral integrity.

The suggestion through the play is that morals can be seen as just a gesture. And any gesture is of course not important when contrasted against any form of legality. However, the protagonist of the play, Thomas More, takes the stand that morals are above the law, not mere gestures, for they define a man. And a man's self is all he has in the end according to More. To that end morality comes over man made laws because to More morality essentially stems from God.

The history of this play was defined in the preface by the author. Many will know the popular version of the story, of how Henry the VIII decided to first marry his brother's widow Catherine, getting the Pope to change laws based on Biblical ideals, and then to divorce her in favour of one Anne Boleyn. All of which led to the known history of Henry VIII's wives of course. That aside, the means by which he divorced Catherine is what forms the real conflict of the play. For Henry VIII decided that the Pope was nothing but a Bishop of Rome rather than God's representative as was thought at the time. As such this lead to Henry VIII deciding that all bishops (including the Pope) were under the ruler-ship of a King and then he appointed the Archbishop of Canterbury which led to the formation of the Anglican Church - the Church of England. The rest as they say is history.

Thomas More as a character in this play, stands in opposition to these acts by the king. He presents the view that the Magna Carter protects the Church from the throne as well as indicating that God and his representatives are above the throne. Everything boils down, therefore, to More refusing to swear an oath despite his children telling him that surely words mean nothing if not meant in the heart. And yet More, dramatically refuses to swear this oath for to swear a false oath before God would be a grave compromise.

It is fascinating how political this play is, considering that so much pageantry surrounds politics . It is also fascinating that the main narrator for the play is called the Common Man and plays a variety of roles, occasionally breaking the fourth wall to speak to the audience. The most interesting aspect of this character is that he does nothing to prevent the disaster that occurs in the play, hinting that Bolt is aiming to show his audience that when the common individual does nothing to prevent it, tragedy will triumph.

A Man For All Seasons is the story of a man who essentially does not bow to others putting pressure on his beliefs in regards to politics, religion and one state Marriage (a marriage that Henry VIII argued semantically, was invalid). Whether we are meant to be that man for all seasons is a question for the reader or observer to consider. The key issue of importance appears to be that one should recognise what they can do to prevent disaster from striking.

Feel free to debate any of these issues in the comments section. As long as all comments are civilised I'm certain they will prompt interesting discussion.

I'm currently listening to Hilary Mantel's and will have to re-read this play as well.

I know I loved it on first read many, many years ago, but I may re-evaluate.

I'm not going to lie. After reading this book, I'm a little bit in love with Sir Thomas More.

You can't help it after reading Robert Bolt's play, though. He's so witty and charming and kind and gentle, yet so passionately certain of what is right and wrong and what things are worth dying for. King Henry VIII is such a great character in this play, such an overly-jovial spoiled baby, that More looks even more noble by comparison. (In my head I picture him looking a little bit like Clark Kent. I don't know why.)

Bolt's preface to the play, talking about how he came to choose this particular subject matter when he's not even really a Christian, is almost as interesting and compelling as the play itself; he describes how he came to More with an outsider's eye and without really being able to believe in what More believed, he was still struck by the firmness of More's commitment to stand by the oath he swore, even knowing that it meant death at the hands of the King who was once his best friend.

This play has one of the best courtroom scenes in all of modern drama, rivaling anything in "Twelve Angry Men."

Unless I'm misremembering (a quick Google search is not helping me here), the late Justice Antonin Scalia quoted this play in his speeches. This immediately bumped it from one of those classics I 'heard about and should read someday...' to a high priority on my to-read list. But I went in basically clueless about the content.
I think it would take a talented cast to make this play interesting for modern audiences to watch. (I might rescind that statement once I get my hands on the movie.) Reading it however? Fascinating.
There are lots of really great themes in this play. While the central drama is one man's refusal to go against the dictates of his conscience, there are also some really interesting thoughts about the purpose of the law, the meaning of silence, and the pressure of society.
Definitely one I will need to come back to once I've done some more reading on Thomas More.

This country's planted thick with laws from coast to coast-man's laws, not God's-and if you cut them down-and you're just the man to do it-d'you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake.

Several years ago I did something stupid, not sure what. It is near certain that I knew at the time. My wife yelled at me. I deserved that, I'm sure of that in hindsight. I sat and read this in one go. It isn't historically accurate but it is compelling.

A Man For All Seasons This review is dedicated to prisoners of conscience and those who swim against the tide by putting their own consciences first This play revolves around Sir Thomas More who out of his own religious and political conviction refuses to endorse the divorce of Henry VIII to Catherine of Aragon .As a result he is condemned to die but refuses to renege right up to his executioner is a universal work which embodies the principals of freedom and conscience; the self-assurance to do what one knows to be right regardless of swimming against the . tide. In the age of political correctness it is as important to stand firm on ones own convictions and sense of right and wrong no matter what the consequences More refuses to bow down to the maxim that `every man has his price' and is an early political dissident -the forerunner of so many true prisoners of conscience throughout .More can be seen as the Danton , the Pastor Niemoller , the Lech Walesa the Vaclav Havel or one of the countless persecuted dissidents in dictatorships existing today such as Zimbabwe , Iran, North Korea and Red China I 'But it is far more than just a political work -it is full of human emotion and explores human theme it is wonderful to see how More' s wife and daughter stand by him to the end And the biting humor of the narrator presented as The Common Man adds a special quality to the play much like Shakespeare's Fallcroft A Man For All Seasons is definitely a literary masterpiece

For those who are history buffs this is a play about Sir Thomas More and his refusing to submit to pressures of Cromwell to recognize the union of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn against the Roman Catholic Church. The play was intense and shows a man, More, who actually loved his sovereign but loved God more. The fact that More never spoke out against Henry and the charges against him were manufactured and the laws misused would eventually turn More into a Saint and Martyr. I read the director's/actor's script of the play and every countenance of the characters or discourses were minutely detailed so the reader had a good concept of how the actual play should be performed. I would recommend this play as one that is well written, clearly defined characters and highly dramatic.

This play balances a character of constancy, principle and conscience against a whole mob of shitheads who enjoy none of these qualities. Interesting to me is the mixture of respect and resentment that this character of conscience creates in those characters who live according to convenience and expediency. This play is probably a nice description of just about every martyrdom in every land across all the ages. And it shows why there are so few martyrs. It鈥檚 really really easy to bend your inner rules.

This is a two act play without scene breaks, which is an interesting formulation. Bolt鈥檚 use of a single character to thread together the contiguous scenes recalled to me .

this is a very famous play and i'm not really sure why. thomas more makes an inspiring main character but neither he nor anybody else ever changes and there's not a single surprise or twist in the whole play. just a straight line to martyrdom from page one. it's like one long speech about standing up for principles. it's a well-written speech, but still.

4.5 stars! It's very moving, and I especially love the part of the Common Man. The irony of him giving insight throughout the play is wonderfully done. St. Thomas More's tact, humility, and wit is very endearing. I love this play!

鈥淲hen a man takes an oath, Meg, he's holding his own self in his own hands. Like water [he cups his hands], and if he opens his fingers then, he needn't hope to find himself again. Some men aren't capable of this, but I'd be loathe to think your father one of them.鈥

LOVED. This play has forever burrowed itself into the deepest recesses of my brain, and I need to at least keep a log of my main thoughts so I can return to this when I inevitably reflect on this play again in the future.

Storywise, my edition provides a fairly succinct synopsis:
鈥淚n this tense play of conscience, Thomas More, Lord Chancellor of England, enters into political and moral conflict with King Henry VIII when he refuses to support the King鈥檚 move to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon. More鈥檚 decision to endorse the divine right of the Pope over and above that of the King leads to his unwilling martyrdom and tragic downfall.鈥

A Man for All Seasons asks deep, philosophical questions that have stuck with me over the years 听鈥 through the play we explore themes of integrity, the idea of the self and selfhood, the conflict between personal belief and public duty, and the high cost of moral conviction.

I love Thomas More鈥檚 character because you can take away dual interpretations of him. Is More an inspiring figure of moral conviction, or is he a warning against the dangers of moral absolutism?

More鈥檚 refusal to compromise his conscience, even when his life is at stake, raises profound questions: Is it right to prioritize one鈥檚 individual conscience over societal or political demands? What happens when rigid morality clashes with complex real-world situations? Is it always right to prioritize personal integrity over loved ones鈥 well-being?

As an inspiring figure, More is a symbol of integrity and moral courage. He鈥檚 an idealist whose unwavering commitment to his conscience serves as profound personal inspiration. His steadfastness in the face of societal, political, and personal pressure suggests that living by your principles, even when it costs you everything, is the highest form of moral duty. Robert Bolt seems to present More as a figure who values his "self" over external pressures, symbolizing the individual standing firm against the encroachments of authority. I and many other readers find in More an aspirational figure, a reminder that moral integrity can triumph over corruption and compromise, even if the consequences are severe. He reminds me of Socrates (who also faced death for his adherence to his beliefs), and both stand as pillars of devotion and examples of the sacrifices necessary to preserve one鈥檚 ethical identity in a world full of moral ambiguity.

叠鲍罢鈥.

As a warning against moral absolutism, More is a tragic figure whose rigidity led to needless suffering. More's refusal to bend鈥攅ven in the face of death鈥攔eflects a kind of moral pride that disregards the emotional toll on his family. In the play, More's wife Alice and his daughter Margaret (Meg) both plead with him to save his life by taking the oath, even if it means lying for the sake of survival. Their pleas highlight the human cost of More's moral rigidity. One could interpret More鈥檚 integrity as important, but acknowledge that an unbending adherence to principles鈥攚ithout room for compromise鈥攃an be impractical and even harmful. The grief and suffering More鈥檚 death causes his loved ones could be seen as a warning against moral absolutism.

Bolt perhaps may have intended this tension. In his preface to the play, Bolt notes that More was chosen as the central figure not because of his saintliness, but because of his internal sense of self鈥攈is ability to "hold his own self in his hands." More as a character transcends simple religious martyrdom 鈥斕鼴olt admired him for his sense of 鈥渟elfhood鈥 aka his ability to remain true to his internal convictions rather than external pressures. I feel like for Bolt, More鈥檚 greatness lay not in his specific religious beliefs but in his ability to live and die according to the values he held most dear. However, Bolt also leaves room for the audience to question the wisdom of More's choices. Was his death really necessary? Could he have found a way to preserve his integrity while sparing his family鈥檚 pain?

To me, More's martyrdom feels both like an act of extraordinary moral courage and, at times, stubbornness. The play does not offer easy answers but invites deep reflection on whether holding fast to one鈥檚 principles, regardless of the cost, is noble or impractical in a world of compromise.

Is More a beacon of moral clarity, or is his story a critique of rigid adherence to absolute principles? Bolt, through the complexity of his portrayal, allows room for both interpretations, leaving it to us in the audience to reflect on the delicate balance between principle and practicality, integrity and flexibility.

This is also the play I instantly think about when I think of the theme of selfhood, which lies at the heart of More鈥檚 moral struggle. As Bolt notes in his introduction, More鈥檚 steadfastness stems from his clear sense of self. For him, identity is defined by adherence to his conscience, something that cannot be compromised without losing himself in the process. It always makes me reflect on what qualities of mine are essential to myself 鈥 which qualities in us cannot be stripped away, because they are essential to the core of who we are?

Ultimately, A Man for All Seasons offers a timeless reflection on the tension between public duty and private conviction, the fragility and essentialism of selfhood, and the cost of living by one鈥檚 ideals.

I didn't expect to like this book/play as much as I did.

Story goes, our English teacher brings in the book and has us read the super long, boring prologue. Literally, the most boring thing in the entire book. Other than that, the book/play of fly.

Set during King Henry VIII's rein, poor Sir Thomas More struggles to keep his family safe while struggling to resolve an issue against his moral conscience. It's all great. No spoilers, since it is history.

A reread this play after some 35 years...it's still as powerful as it was 3 decades ago. I'll be attending its Broadway revival in a few weeks...this was Bolt's masterpiece.

A Man for All Seasons by Robert Bolton
Magnificent, stupendous- 10 out of 10

The film may be better known than the play and I however had the chance to enjoy the excellent screen version first.
The movie had the script written by Robert Bolt and went on to win no less than six Academy Awards and had Orson Wells in the cast.
This morning I have finished the play on which the acclaimed film was based and what a marvelous work it is!!
It can serve as a lesson for anybody interested in learning about meaning, rectitude, bravery, power of conviction and much more.
The hero is a very complex and strong man, determined to stand up for his beliefs, even if that means antagonizing the king.
Thomas More is not really a rebel, on the contrary he respects the authority of the king and that makes the play even more thrilling.
If he would be a nut case or a chevalier bent on fighting and dueling emphatically, refusing to accept the new order for the fun of it, it would have been a comedy or perhaps a tragedy with limited impact.
But Thomas More, even when accused is very careful to state that he accepts the new order of things and even the future queen.
The trouble is started by the infamous king Henry VIII, after his first wife fails to deliver a heir and he wants to change the established rules.
It is true that not having a male descendant was a problem of national security in those days and any ruler would have been annoyed with the situation.
But Henry went too far, one might say- when he decided that he would have a new wife no matter what the rest of the world says.
This meant a conflict with the Catholic Church that disapproves to this day of divorce and banned it outright in the past.
In fact I think it is disallowed even today without a proper dispensation, based on reasonable and well grounded motives.
In the conflict with the Catholic Church, Thomas More sides with the pope, in the belief that the latter does represent God on Earth.
Since Thomas More is a very faithful man, he sees the options before him as clear cut, although he would not upset the king, if he could.
- Even if the monarch deserves obeisance and loyalty, there is a higher authority that commands even greater respect
So when asked to disavow his faith and recognize a new church, which would become The Church of England or The Anglican Church, More refuses.
This makes me have some qualms here, even if I am aware of the Magnificence of this Man for All Seasons.
Yes, it is wonderful and awesome to have such strong, unflinching beliefs that would not change even in front of Death.
But on the other hand, a little flexibility could have saved not just his own person, but spared his family immense suffering.
The strange coincidence is that while I write these notes, there is an episode from The History of Christianity on The History Channel- where else?- and that makes me think of a possible vanity of the great man...
The episode on TV refers to Protestantism and the many shades and confessions it gave birth to all over the world.
We can imagine what comedians would make out of this stand for the Old Church as opposed to choosing a new denomination.
But putting this issue aside, we need to get back to admiring a wonderful hero who would not lose his religion even when faced with execution.
I am not sure if I should assume that a potential reader would not about this centuries old history and not think in terms of spoiler alerts.
Because the stupendous play ends with a dramatic, horrifying bang鈥he significance of which the audience knows all too well.
I had the great chance to listen to a BBC production with fantastic interpretations from the likes of Brian Cox and Martin Freeman.

Yesterday I was listening to this podcast where the host asked listeners to make a list of things they would die for. Of course, the list, any list, would begin with loved ones, some possessions such as lands and money... and then we would arrive at the untangible. Values. Freedom, any kind of freedom. Truth.

In this tragic historical drama, Bolt depicts what it was like to die for what is believed to be Moral Truth.

A Man for All Seasons is a brilliant portrait of Sir Thomas More in his last years as Lord Chancellor of England during the reign of Henry VIII and his famous Act of Supremacy.
Although the story contains no surprises, Bolt succeeds at writing a compelling play that has readers wonder was it really all worth it? In a time where, as Rich put it 鈥渆very man has his price鈥, should he have given his life for what he held to be right?

Equally brilliant -if not more brilliant- is Bolt's prefatory text, in which he explains his passion for the 16th century Chancellor and his sacred principles.

As says in her review, I too fell for Sir Thomas More while reading the script and have a lasting fondness for Paul Scofield after seeing his portrayal of More in the 1966 movie. Though I am not Catholic and am not a believer in organized religion and am saddened beyond reason when I think of anyone killing over such an issue, for More to be so clever while being so staunch in his convictions and to stand for his principles -- to argue in fact that it is the principle of standing on his principles that should be respected by the King and the court -- made my anguished teenage heart cry even harder for the justice that I thought should be available in the world.

The exchange regarding the maxim "Silence gives consent" has always stuck with me and shames me when I think of times I've held my tongue for the sake of courtesy or decorum.

After reading Mantel's 'Wolf Hall' and 'Bring up the Bodies' I felt almost obligated to get another perspective on Thomas More. From a fictional perspective, I felt 'A Man for All Seasons' was the place to go. A beautiful play that examines what it is like to be a man of immovable consience in a corrupt society. Now I've got to go figure out if a fundamentalist angel is still an angel.

I read this in preparation for a production I'm involved in - not as an actor, but once I got through the first few pages I couldn't put it down.

The plot is fairly well known; Henry VIII wants a divorce, breaks from Rome, and with revolutions, people die. St Thomas More being one of them. This interplay between the world and the Heavens can be seen working through More's mind, and he remains true to his word, and is able to use the law to his advantage by remaining silent. In his sham trial at the end, he realises there is no reason to stay quiet anymore and speaks his mind - his realisation that his death is God's will.

The author keeps the suspense throughout and even though we know the conclusion, we can still see the inner thoughts of St Thomas More playing out as he keeps to his convictions and his faith to the very end.
The slimy Cromwell has the perfect lines to indicate his position, and as we are remind in the play, he meets the same end as St Thomas More, his loyalty to the world and the King having led him to the chopping block.
There are moments of relief and humour in the play, releasing the tension, and More's almost breezy understanding of the situation and his resignation towards God shows him as a model of how we can live our lives in tumultuous political times.

"More: Then it's a poor argument to call it 'neat', Meg. When a man takes an oath, Meg, he's holding his on self in his own hands. Like water (cups hands) and if he opens his fingers then - he needn't hope to find himself again. Some men aren't capable of this, but I'd be loathe to think your father one of them." p.83

"More: The law is not a 'light' for you or any man to see by; the law is not an instrument of any kind. (To the Foreman.) The law is a causeway upon which so long as he keeps to it a citizen may walk safely."p.92

"More: Have patience, Margaret, and trouble not thyself. Death comes for us all; even at our birth (he holds her head and looks down at it for a moment in recollection) - even at our birth, death does but stand aside a little. It is the law of nature, and the will of God." p.98

"If we lived in a State where virtue was profitable, common sense would make us good, and greed would make us saintly. And we'd live like animals or angels in the happy land that needs no heroes." ~Sir Thomas More

I haven't read a play since I was in high school, during my drama club days when I actually participated in a play. While I am not the greatest fan of period pieces, the lessons of corruption - morality - politics and the common man remains evident through the evolution of time, place, and opportunity.

Is there a blurred line or expectation of compromise between bowing down to the pressures of choosing the populist wrong in exchange for what is right and just? The conversations in this book are quite relevant throughout history, even in our day and time.

Henry VIII defied the law of the church by pushing for permission to marry the widow of his deceased brother. He has now become heir to the thrown but doesn't have a wife. Henry knows what the scripture says in Leviticus 18:16 "Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife." Yet he pushes the church anyway to grant his wish to marry Catherine, his brother's widow. The problem comes when Catherine is unable to bear him a male heir and he wants the marriage annulled so he can marry another woman who will bear him a son.

The pressure is on Lord Chancellor, Sir Thomas More who is committed to the covenant of the church and morally he cannot agree to changing the rules back just to suit King Henry's desires. Thus, he is thrown into jail. During the only visit More was allowed to have, his family (his wife Alice, his daughter Margaret, and his son-in-law William Roper) comes to see him in prison. They plea with him to compromise his belief about the annulment, but he sticks with his commitment and sorrowfully asks them to leave and move out of town.

Thomas Cromwell and The Duke of Norfolk who were supposed to be More's friends maliciously craft grounds to have More put on trial for treason. It was interesting to me that when Cromwell addressed the jury, trying to demonize More in order to support his argument for his conviction, he said this, "There's nothing like darkness for sharpening the ear, and we listen." He further made this comment in his commentary, "So silence can, according to circumstances, speak. Consider, now, the circumstances of the prisoner's silence."

Immediately they had Sir Thomas More beheaded. Even though More knew his demise, he stuck to his conscious and commitment. This is a good, short read that draws you in to the drama.
