René Goscinny (1926 - 1977) was a French author, editor and humorist, who is best known for the comic book , which he created with illustrator Albert Uderzo, and for his work on the comic series Lucky Luke with Morris (considered the series' golden age).
é chez les Belges = Asterix in Belgium (é #24), René Goscinny, Albert Uderzo
Asterix in Belgium, is the twenty-fourth volume of the Asterix comic book series, by René Goscinny (stories) and Albert Uderzo (illustrations).
After fighting the Belgians in the northern part of Gaul, Caesar states that they are the bravest enemies he has ever faced (historically claimed by Caesar).
His soldiers agree with him, to the point when they consider being posted to the camps outside Asterix's village as a period of leave.
Chief Vitalstatistix is aghast at the idea that his village, which has been the terror of the Romans for years, is now looked upon as relatively harmless.
He is further outraged when he hears of Caesar's remarks. He claims that "his villagers" are in fact the bravest men of Gaul, and travels to Belgium to prove his point.
A reluctant Asterix and Obelix go with him after Getafix tells them not doing so could make the story come to a sticky end.
After crossing the border, they encounter a village of Belgians who rely on brute strength (and a regular diet of meat and beer) to successfully scare off Caesar's troops.
These Belgians are led by two chiefs, Beefix and Brawnix (though Brawnix comes across mainly as a second-in-command).
To prove that the Gauls are the bravest, Vitalstatistix proposes a competition. The contest consists of raiding and destroying Roman camps on either side of the village.
The Belgians and Gauls destroy the camps, telling the soldiers who they are. By the end they have destroyed an equal number of camps.
Meanwhile, the Pirates' ship is wrecked when Obelix throws a boulder catapulted at him too high, causing the Captain to complain, saying he and his men are neutrals.
Word is sent to Rome, though the facts are exaggerated, talking about vast hordes of Gauls, a savage pack of hounds, and a mysterious fleet of neutrals.
Caesar goes to Belgium himself to restore order unaware of the fact that the whole thing is to get him to decide once and for all which side is the bravest. ...

My oh my.
The last story written by Goscinny! Fist written in French in 1979 as é chez les Belges, it was first published in English in 1980. Chief Vitalstatistix is outraged upon hearing that Julius Caesar has referred to the Belgians as the bravest of all the Gaullish peoples, and immediately sets out for Belgium to prove him wrong. At the suggestion of Druid Getafix, Asterix and Obelix accompany him, lest the whole venture come to a `sticky end'. What ensues is compensation between the Belgians and the Armoricans (Asterix and Co) to prove who can bash the most Romans, until Julius Caesar comes to Belgium with his army to intervene. Our friends get to meet a robust and fiery people not unlike themselves, with curvaceous blond ladies, good beer and masses of good food. There is a wonderful adaptation of one of those charming paintings by Dutch master, Pieter Breughel The Elder. The English translation uses to very witty effect, quotes by George Gordon, Lord Byron, William Shakespeare and John Milton.
One of the best volumes in the series, with funny lines and smart connections. I like how meta the rivalry between the Gauls is, as a reference to both the French and the Belgian being prolific comic creators. There's even a reference/tribute to Tin Tin inserted in the story. Goscinny, the writer and co-creator of Asterix died during the making of this volume and from that point in the story it starts raining and the skies are darkened.
In this one, Chief Vitalstatistix takes off for Belgium after hearing from a Roman patrol that they like being in Gaul because the Belgians are worse, and they don't mind getting thumped here...enraged, off the chief goes, with Asterix and Obelix not far behind.
The rest of the book involves the 3 Gauls bonding with the Belgians, and competing against to see who is better at thumping Romans. It goes so far as to ask Caesar to officiate the competition, which angers him immensely, so he leads his armies to crush them once and for all.
Of course, the combined might of the Belgians and our 3 Gauls is enough to stop them entirely.
Caesar is embarrassed, both tribes agree they're equally good at thumping Romans, and a banquet takes place.
Zgodba me je razočarala. Nesmiseln "bratski" prepir in tekmovanje v kazanju mišic.
I never really have anything bad to say about Asterix comics (apart from a certain someone always been tied up and silenced at the end of every book- my heart hurts a little for him! But perhaps I wouldn't be so if I heard him with my own ears?). I always find myself rather hungry though after reading Asterix! There were two guest appearances in this book which I greatly enjoyed! :)
Chief Abraracourcix hears an off-hand comment about the Belgians being considered the bravest of the barbarian tribes. A bravery contest ensues. The Romans are not happy. The volume starts slow but evolves into hilarious madness towards the end. My absolute favorite panel? On page 31, Dupont and Dupond announce:
The Roman legions, best in the world when it comes to martial maneuvers...and puns have suffered long and hard the attacks of the local barbarian tribes who refuse to bend the knee. Now they have been sent to a less grueling assignment, as a form of Rest Cure. To Armorica, to be beaten up by a relatively less threatening magic potion chugging village of Gauls.
Anything they reckon, is better than suffering at the hands of the Belgians, ferocious warriors whom even Caesar has proclaimed as the bravest warriors in the world. Which, does not sit well with the formerly mentioned Gauls, in particular their chief Vitalstatistix. After all, everyone knows who the bravest and most ferocious adversaries to Romans are. This mistake needed to be rectified.
If you've read the story for any length of time, you can pretty much guess where it's headed to. It's off to Belgium, boys.
The Belgians are, hard to believe, even more boisterous and party loving than the Gaul. A real terror on the Romans, they're not one to shy away from a challenge. To determine who comes out on top, our favorite gauls and the Belgians decide on a single bet; as to who can beat up and destroy the most Romans. It is not a good time to be a Roman soldier; or Caesar for that Matter.
All of this culminates as one would expect. In a cluster fracking of the well oiled, well maneuvered, but ill fated Roman Legions. Something very satisfying to see the Romans get beaten up, there is.
With a new unlocked civilization we have a whole lot of new puns to play with. Ø Pseudonymus Ø Beefix Ø Brawnix Ø Melancholix Ø Potbellix Ø Alcoholix Ø Bonanza Ø Saintlouisblus Ø Wolfgangamadeus Ø Monotonus Ø Dietetix Ø Botanix & Cauliflowa Ø Umbelliferus
Latin Lessons for the day: 'Non licet omnibus adire corinthum,' meaning 'Not everyone can go to Corinth'.
The last Asterix story from Goscinny, who died halfway through writing the comic. As a homage to him, Uderzo drew darkened skies and rain into the comic for the rest of the album, to mark the point at which Goscinny died. A further tribute to Goscinny appears in the very last panel of the album: beneath the banquet scene, to the left of the panel, a rabbit glances mournfully at Goscinny's signature. Further references include french fries, detectives Thomson and Thompson, and the iconic Belgian statue Manneken Pis.
This one seems somewhat bland which is a sad thing to say about somebody's last effort. Especially coming after the powerhouse that is . The Gauls and the Belgians are too similar and the idea of the competition is not so great. Some of the references to Belgian culture are on the point though (especially the Tintin one!).
