Tony Buzan was an author and educational consultant. He was a proponent of the techniques of Mind Mapping and mental literacy. He worked with: corporate entities and businesses all over the world; academics; Olympic athletes; children of all ages; governments; and high profile individuals, in teaching them how to maximize the use of their brain power.
Buzan was born in London, was an alumnus of Kitsilano Secondary School, and received double honors in psychology, English, mathematics and the General Sciences from the University of British Columbia in 1964. He is probably best known for his book, Use Your Head, his promotion of mnemonic systems and his Mind Mapping techniques. He launched his own software program to support mind mapping called iMindMap in December 2006. His website, Buzan World, cites trademarks on the phrase 'Mind Maps' which he has registered in many countries.
Following his 1970s series for the BBC, many of his ideas have been set into his series of five books: Use Your Memory, Master Your Memory, Use Your Head, The Speed Reading Book and The Mind Map Book. He authored or co-authored over 100 books.
Most of his teaching generally divided up into: general awareness of the extensive capabilities and capacities of the brain and its functions, memory skills, reading skills, Mind Map note-taking and note-making, creativity, and how brain function can be improved over time into old age.
Buzan developed Mind Mapping whilst at university, out of the frustration that traditional notes took up so much time to create and review. He has argued that Mind Maps are an efficient way to take notes from lectures or books. His brother Barry Buzan, who co-wrote The Mind Map Book, suggested the technique could also be used to capture notes from one's own creative ideas and is useful in business.
As a popular psychology author, Tony Buzan wrote on subjects relating to the brain, genius quotient (GQ), spiritual intelligence, memory, creativity and speed reading. He was the founder and President of the Brain Foundation (not to be confused with various medical-related bodies with the same name) and also the Brain Trust Charity, the World Memory Championships and the World Championships of the Brain. He was a co-founder of London's Mind Body Spirit Festival as well as the Mind Sports Olympiad.
I did not speed read Tony Buzan's The Speed Reading Book because I found it to be rather a slog. There is useful information in here about the physical capabilities of your eyes and brain, methods for training your eyes how to move, the benefits of improving your vocabulary, how to recognize patterns in the way paragraphs are structured, and the basics of logic.
However, it's interspersed with information that I felt was better presented in .
"Quite apart from important improvements in the technique of learning how to read fast which are set forth in this book, what I wish to emphasize in my system is that understanding and remembering factual material is not nearly as important as knowing how to relate new material to what you already know. This is the all-important 'integrative factor', or if you will, learning how to learn." pgs 12-13
He re-hashes the proper way to make a mind-map and the importance of previewing all reading material, even mystery novels, which I felt was silly. I can't speak for the whole world, but I read mysteries to be entertained, not create a template into which I fit important details as I go along.
"The purpose of the preview is to develop a structure into which the mind can more easily fit the smaller details of that structure. ... Previewing should be applied whatever kind of material you are going to read, which it be letters, reports, novels or articles." pg 115
Though he did backpedal on his "preview everything" stance somewhat in a chapter about reading poetry: "When reading literature and poetry, bring to bear all your knowledge and judgment, and if you feel that it is the kind of writing you wish to treasure forever, forget about speed reading through it and reserve it for those occasions when time is not so pressing." pgs 167-168
Thank you, I will.
Perhaps part of my problem with this book is that it revealed to me just how slowly I read and assimilate non-fiction, because Buzan offers the reader information about the absolute limitlessness of human capability.
"Theoretically, the human visual system can photograph an entire page of print in one-twentieth of a second, and thus a standard length book in between six and twenty-five seconds, and the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica in less than an hour. Advanced skinning and scanning skills take you on the first step of that incredible and inevitable journey." pg 70
Let's say I have much room for improvement.
The book also showed its age somewhat during a chapter on the importance of organizing how you take in information from newspapers: "Newspapers are so much a part of our everyday life that we seldom stop to think that they are a very recent development." pg 148
But are they still? I'm not so sure.
The book ends on a high note and, of course, I plan to continue practicing and improving my skills: "Your continuing success in all fields of speed reading depends on your personal decision to continue the course you have begun, and on the capacity of your brain to read, assimilate, comprehend, recall, communicate and create, abilities which we know approach the infinite. Your success is therefore guaranteed." pg 177
But if you're only going to read one book by Tony Buzan, I recommend .
A grandiose opportunity to significantly expand your reading skills including reading comprehension
Please note that I put the original German text at the end of this review. Just if you might be interested.
This book, published for the first time in 1971 in the English original, represents the laying of the foundation stone of a technique whose utility for contemporaries inclined to literature is hard to gauge. Buzan leads through the different techniques of quick reading, tries to increase motivation through stories about famous quick readers, does a little self-promotion for the mind maps he has also established and lays the foundation for an industry of rapid reading seminars and relevant literature. In addition to the perceptual and visual exercises for extending the range of vision, the use of a reading aid or a metronome is one of the techniques for breaking old habit patterns. One of the points of-of criticism is the influence of the ravages of time on the work, which was not concealed with equal vehemence and whose reprint was published in 2013.
Because I hold a lot of these techniques, I have been practicing for ten years and have already read a few books on them; I would like to conclude by mentioning general, partly subjectively colored facts for quick reading to give interested readers an overview. I will add the following sections of the text to all reviews on quick reading books.
1. First the naked truth 2. General 3. Reading Aids 4. Skimming and Scanning 5. Extension of the viewing range 6. My development and opinion
1. First the naked truth
What is often concealed by the authors of the literature and deliberately not mentioned is the difference between skimming/scanning and the expansion of the range of view. Skimming and scanning are overflight techniques, no operating reading speeds. The extension of the viewing range, on the other hand, is a "real" increase in the reading speed. Those are entirely different terms. By praising the speed of skimming and scanning as attainable reading speeds, the authors aim to market their books with impressive but unattainable objectives better. This discredits a good idea of quick reading.
2. General
The essential basis of all exercises and the quick-reading success are the correct distance to the text, good lighting, little to no distraction and the normal execution of eye movement exercises and techniques for the successful expansion of the range of vision. The aim is to pass the word-for-word practice that has been practiced for years or decades, to discard bad habits such as regression, subvocalization, and doubts about understanding, and to learn new, more efficient reading patterns. There may be individual differences in how quickly success can be achieved through regular practice. Moreover, when the point is reached, where you can capture several words at a glance and still make a high level of comprehension. The exercises can be integrated into everyday life in a variety of ways. Be it reading newspapers, smartphone, advertising flyers, brochures, billboards, displays, food labels and whatever else comes in the creative mind. Regarding the particular advantages of glasses or contact lenses, I am uncertain. In principle, as a normal-sighted or contact lens wearer is closer to the action and has no delay as for when reading with the glasses. However, eyes with contact lenses are always irritated to a minimum, since even the best quality is a foreign body. As a result, they tend to wear out faster, dry out and become more sensitive to glaring light. Presumably, the preference for glasses or contact lens over time is likely to be in favor of better reading with a visual aids mode. I have not yet implemented eye muscle exercises in the exercise program, but I would like to. In the case of suitable ophthalmologists and on the respective type of visual impairment or normal vision matched exercises should be able to get even more increases and more extended read phases without fatigue.
3.Reading Aids
Metronome and reading aid in the form of a pencil or thin sticks. Without regular exercise with these tools, you can not get on. As with learning an instrument or language, you need this dry groundwork. It is not possible without it. Only when the mechanisms are automated, one can enjoy with pleasure at the higher reading speed. Use it or lose it.
4. Skimming and Scanning
Especially in the very advanced reading exercises such as reading several lines at once, the departure of whole text passages in loop movements and the fixation of entire text passages with a look reveals natural boundaries. While these sophisticated tools should be used to automate lightning-fast cognition and to find information quickly, in practice, they soon encounter implementation problems. Especially with more complex, also professionally relevant texts, an application of the meta reading techniques should no longer be valid. A sufficient understanding cannot be achieved at certain speeds. On the contrary, it may cost more time to gain as much information in some quick read overs than in a slower pass reading just 1 to 2 words per view. Moreover, a crucial and in the book subjectively treated topic is the foreknowledge and the specific vocabulary of the reader. These contribute much to speed and understanding. It is also logical that reading speed and comprehension begin to drift apart at a certain point, but individual differences are likely to be considerable. How sensible it is to train up to a very high reading speed over long exercise periods is up to you. Whether time savings through better understanding in half the time or instead frustration through regression and repeated reading gaining the upper hand for understanding the meaning of the word will only be experienced after an extended training period. Moreover, that is either meaningfully invested or wasted on a project that exceeded its capacities. Whether it is worth the risk, everyone has to decide for themselves. Beyond the spheres of one's own professional or private hobby, which are easier to understand, the advanced reading exercises are quite good. For example, to give an overview, refresh already acquired knowledge, explore a text in search of specific passages or contexts and as an additional impulse generator book purchase. In principle, the techniques for advanced and professional are individually good or bad, since no one can say with no certainty how effective these methods are. Since one does not even know the precise functioning of the human brain, it is difficult to weigh pros and cons. Only the future will show it and until then one store with the help of the high-frequency reading techniques either much subconsciously and thus expands his knowledge. Alternatively, it is mostly meaningless, but at least used as eye muscle training employment.
5. Extension of the viewing range
In contrast, the exercises to expand the span of the eyes are 1 to 5 words that can be used to read a line in 2 to 3 views of the respective centers of the phrases, a revelation to any professionally-compulsive or privately-readable person. Time-consuming, but in my experience very helpful is the creation of own practice examples with word processing, mind map, or drawing programs. The significant advantage of this is that you can determine the length of the individual fixations and the complexity of the exercises yourself and adapt them individually to your abilities. Another option for efficient training is with apps or quick-reading software such as "Speed Reader 2.0" or "Read faster, keep more 2.0 learning software". However, the prices for the programs are more than proud, which is a pity given the significant benefits that come with their application. As with the acquisition of a language, it takes time, and you become more savvy and confident over the years of practice. Moreover, more routine in the choice of appropriate technology and speed for various texts. What is an additional obstacle is the abandonment of old reading patterns, which is always accompanied by malaise, doubts, and skepticism? However, once the dam of old habits is broken, one can only look back in disbelief at the voluntary restriction of personal potential over a painfully extended period. I can only recommend this extremely satisfying technique, which is undoubtedly accompanied by a doubling or tripling of the reading speed. The acquisition is associated with considerable effort, but sustained benefits. The only prerequisite is the discipline to remain focused until the onset of the focused, continually expanding, view. Try to learn the reading a second time right from the beginning. There is nothing to lose, but much life and reading time to win.
6. My development and opinion
I started with the average 200 to 250 words per minute and gradually increased to 400 to 700 words over two years. Depending on the accessibility of the text and the constitution of the day, I can sparsely exceed the 700. However, this already starts with stress and is quite tiring for the eyes. I think all the speeds above utopian for average people. It is just not possible to read so quickly with understanding at this time with a limited range of vision. Tony Buzan Speed Reading
Actually the book has some important concepts, and many thanks to Buzan for his insights on human skills.
But overall I do not like the way some books are written where the content of the book can be delivered in 10 pages, but rather it is written in around 300 pages.
For speed reading I recommend the The Free Speed Reading Course youtube video:
It will cover the topic without the spices added in Buzan's book which, unlike spices, doesn't add taste nor smell.
Another thing I don't like in these books, the huge hype they add, like you can read at 1000 and 10,000 words per minute, you can also be from the top 10 in the world, please respect our minds.
I read the Arabic ediion of this book because it is the only edition available in my university library (KFUPM Main Library). This book is one of a series of books on mind, memory, reading skills. When you first read the introductory part of this book, you'll that you are reading one of the weight loss ads on TV that usually exaggerate the real benifits of the their service or method. Don't judge too quickly , start reading and applying what you read and you'll be amazed of your results. Of course, this book is not a magic stick. It takes commitment to reach the level of speed and comprehenstion you want. My advice to you is this: if you want to reach advanced levels of speed reading and comrehenstion at the same time, practice , practice and the practice some more!
Before I had my first experience in mindfulness meditation, I was crazy about mind developing in another way already. You can call it a worldly aspect of it. I was very much into books about brain development, memory enhancement and stuff. Not that it worked for me! I have noticed, especially after my numerous retreats, that my brain does decline with age. But at least I'm trying! Well, this book is from my pre-meditation day, and now and then I still pick it up to read for fun, and I use it to teach my graduate school class also. According to this book's stat, your fastest reading speed is when you're in grad school! So, you'd better make the most of it if you're in one now! hee hee hee Anyway, it especially helps if your first language is not English, just like me. In the world where time is the most precious commodity, anyone can benefit from a well-written book like this one. It has exercise at the end of each chapter where you can time yourself and calculate your score. You'll be surprised that, with each technique learned, your speed would really improve! But if you ask me now, it has a lot to do with mindfulness and your ability to maintain that mindfulness throughout your reading session. Of course the ability to master higher level of English vocabulary would not hurt either and this book also provides you some tips on that. A comprehensive book for anyone who would like to improve their skills in life in general.

Nikada ne膰u mo膰i 膷itati brzo preletanjem i skeniranjem. Pro膷itati sve tomove Britanike za manje od sat vremena za mene je besmislica, 拧to dalje ne zna膷i da na svetu ne膰e postojati odre膽en broj umova koji to mogu.
I bought this book 5 years ago, but, finished it with no effort these days.
We can summarize the idea of most books concerned with the speed of reading or the fast reading;
-Get the motivation -Increase your speed and practice as much as you can on each level you get- you can borrow the techniques of the athletes' heroes. -Make reading a daily habit. -The more you practice the more you master.
but,
the most remarkable aspect is; this book was first published in 1971; which means that surely it was a REVOLUTION that era.
Anyway, good work deserves appreciation.
N.B; Fast reading book so that I spent most of time required for reading it in the bathroom;
It must have been around 5 years ago, maybe more that I became interested in Tony Buzan's Mind-Mapping technique which, at the time, was rather fashionable in the field of primary school teaching. It must have been at about that time that I saw this book on the For Sale shelf of my local library.
I read the whole bookbefore working through it properly and doing the exercises. The theory is quite convincing in it's argument that it is possible to significantly increase reading speed whilst also improving comprehension.
I found that I was able to increase my reading speed by a significnt margin but partway through the book I started to struggle with the techniques and found that my comprehension was dropping off. Either I was doing something wrong or the exercises just weren't working for me.
It would be interesting to see how effective other readers find these techniques.
At the 2016 Toastmasters International Convention, Tony Buzan was presented with the Golden Gavel to recognise his achievements in the study of the mind. If you want to learn how to read fast, few people can teach you as well as he can. People wonder how I read as many books as I do... the earlier edition of the book taught me the elemental principles of my speed reading system. Everyone professional needs to read to stay indispensable in their company and this book will help you read faster and remember more of what you read.
