Original Review

This is the 5th book in the Shifters series so it is very difficult to review without giving spoilers for previous books. If you're new to the series I strongly recommend you don't read this review as this series really should be read in order - why not check out the reviews for Stray instead. This is my favourite Urban Fantasy series though so I'd definitely recommend you check it out!

This book continues the story just a couple of weeks after the ending of Prey - Faythe and the rest of her Pride are still devastated by the loss of an important Pride member and are preparing to go to war to get their revenge and stop Calvin Malone's attempt to take over the Pride Council. But attack comes in an unexpected form when they are set upon by the Thunderbirds - a Flight of bird shifters who are determined to destroy the Pride. The Pride have no idea why they are under attack and they are at a major disadvantage when their enemy can fly - they can't afford to lose more members if they are going to have a chance in the upcoming war. When the Thunderbirds manage to kidnap Kaci it falls to Faythe to discover what they want and to figure out a way to rescue her.

I have been a massive fan of the Shifters series ever since I read Stray but with each book I've been amazed that it has managed to be better than the last. Shift didn't disappoint and I was drawn into Faythe's world from the very first page. I love the way Faythe's character has grown throughout the series - she still has flaws and makes mistakes but she is truly starting to show her full potential.

Shift is action packed from the word go and kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page. I really didn't know how the book was going to end and there were some great twists that I wasn't expecting. I have no idea how the relationship issues between Faythe, Marc & Jace will be resolved after the events of the last book. I feel for each of the characters and just can't see a way to give all three of them a happy ending.

The style of Rachel Vincent's writing has created an absorbing world that hooks you from the moment you pick up the book. I don't think I've ever felt so emotionally invested in the outcome of a series before and for that reason I am both longing for and dreading the final book Alpha. I'm sure Rachel will manage to surpass my expectations but I really don't want my journey with Faythe, Marc & the Pride to come to an end. If you haven't tried this series yet then I really recommend you go out and get a copy of Stray today - I'm sure you'll be as hooked as I am.

2nd Read

I'm still totally addicted to this series on my second read through. I have to admit I was even more irritated by the triangle this time though, this is the only series I can think of where the triangle got worse in the later books! Luckily I already know who she ends up with because I remember that being extra stressful the first time around LOL.

This series is really raising my blood pressure, the pack politics is quite stressful and half of the Territorial Council are complete and utter bastards. There are a couple of people in particular that I'm desperate to see dead but I know I have some more heartbreak in store before that will happen.

** spoiler alert ** SPOILER ALERT

Okay, I’ve got to say it. I am losing all respect for this series. There I said it, so sue me. As one of the few Tabbies (female were-cats) in existence Faythe Sanders has gone through a lot to get to where she is today. She has had to grow up and make some hard choices in the previous four books of this series and had appeared like she was developing into a strong forward thinking woman/tabby that is being groomed to lead her pride as the first female alpha. With the help and unconditional support of Marc, her father’s right hand cat and Faythe’s lover/mate she seems to be set to do great things.

However, here is where I am having issues, in books 4 and 5 Faythe is seen making horrible personal decisions and then is unable to own up to her mistakes. Come on! If she can’t be honest with the ones she claims to love “desperately (gag) then how is she going to be a trustworthy alpha?

In book 4 Faythe screws around on Marc with Jace one of her pride mates. Jace has always had a crush on her and is one of those flirty guys that you love to have around but would never seriously consider having a real relationship with. In all of the previous books Jace is a laid back cat who has shown no real alpha tendencies until after he sleeps with Faythe the wonder tabby. WTF???

Now in book 5 he is suddenly challenging Marc at every turn and poor Marc has no idea why. Yeah, she hasn't told him that she boinked Jace in a moment of alcohol induced horniness. Oh, but wait they were comforting each other because her brother just got killed and Marc was missing. So your man is missing and your brother’s dead so why not celebrate by getting wasted and totally betraying the one man who seems to love you despite your childish shit.

So now she doesn’t want to give up Jace and she can’t bring herself to “hurt Marc by clueing him in because she doesn’t want to lose him either. On top of everything else they have were-bird people showing up trying to kidnap her and the other tabbies, while killing every male were-cat they can find to avenge the death of one of their own, moronically named “Finn. All because a rival alpha who wants the magic tabbies all to himself has told these birdbrains that Faythes pride were the ones who were guilty of killing their bird buddy.

In between attacks Faythe and Jace keep sharing meaningful looks and sneaking off to have heated debates about their so called relationship. Now I have to say that Jace is trying to be a standup guy and wants to tell Marc what they did but the tabby in denial just won’t own up to it. Yes, sir, she’s prime alpha material all right.

Anyway, the were-birds manage to kill a few of the were-cats and are able to hold the entire pride, plus a few other visiting alphas, hostage on their own land and in their own house. The kicker is they are supposed to be ranchers, but they only have one measly handgun on the entire ranch. Because these cats don’t like guns…again…WTF??

Someone has the bright idea that all the tabbies will be safer somewhere else and Faythe is charged with getting herself, Kaci a recently adopted young tabby, Manx a traumatized declawed tabby and Manx’s infant to safety. Yeah, that is so going to work. Yep, you guessed it they get caught and Faythe and Kaci are spirited away to the badass thunderbirds nest/bird house/whatever. Faythe is told that she must prove her prides innocence in two days or Kaci will be killed.

Hmmm…what’s a tabby to do? I know…let’s call daddy! Who promptly sends help in the form of (wait for it), Jace and Marc. Dang, I just didn’t see that one comin. Can you say road trip? Jace is snippy the whole way, Faythe can’t stop getting injured and Marc is still clueless. Some badly planned escapades ensue, Faythe gets hurt again, and finally, yes finally Marc finds out the big secret.
Okay, by this point in the book I am getting really pissed. I like Marc, he’s hot, he’s dependable and he will do anything to keep his woman safe. He’s given her time to adjust to her new role in their pride and has asked her to marry him. So what does this possessive alpha male do when he finds out his woman slept with someone else, who is within ass kickin distance no less? The don’t touch my woman or I will smear you on the pavement, me Tarzan, badass gives some pathetic speech about getting the job done and goes silent. Well almost silent, he throws some vague threats Jaces way and tells Faythe that she has to choose, that’s about it. Faythe tearfully apologizes, assuring Marc that she still “desperately loves him but privately is frantically trying to figure a way to keep them both. By now I am firmly rooting for the bird people to kill them all.

They manage to get the proof they need by kidnapping the were-cat that really killed the birdman and handing him over in exchange for the Kaci. He of course promptly grabs one of the were-bird children and demands to be let go. He takes off with his hostage into the woods. Faythe and Marc give chase; Marc manages to rip out his throat while Faythe grabs the baby thus saving the day. Mamma and baby bird are reunited, the bad dudes body is handed over to be consumed/eaten by the bird people…and now the were-birds owe the were-cats a favor for saving the cute little baby…nice, right?

The last two books have almost put me off the whole series entirely, which is a shame because this story arc had such promise. But come on, what pride is going to be able to hold up their heads at any were conference when they get their asses handed to them by skinny bird people? I don’t care if they do have razor sharp claws and can fly. Get some damn guns and go huntin. Do you think the wolves would be hiding in the house waiting to get picked off? Hell no, they’d be preparing to kick bird butt. If the birds can beat you up then what are you going to do when the were-mice decide they wanna piece of your ass?
Faythe is supposed to be developing as a strong, intelligent woman who has the opportunity to change the status quo for all female were-cats but she can’t seem to keep her legs closed or be honest with the man she claims to love. She can make the “hard choices like handing over one of her own kind to be eaten but she can’t say no to one guy while being committed to another. Yes, I know that mistakes happen, that’s not it, my issue is with how she has dealt with that mistake that sets my teeth on edge. If you have feelings for another person then woman up and say so, don’t continue to sneak around and rationalize your behavior by pretending your protecting someone from getting hurt…bad..bad..kitty.

Finally, if you’re a collector then go ahead and get this book but don’t expect too much. If you’re not then I would tell you to skip it.

Just one chicks opinion,

Kat

I was going to try to write this review without spoilers from the previous books in this series, but I honestly don’t know how to do it. Too much has happened that built up to this book to leave them out. I will avoid spoilers about the plot content of Shift and tread cautiously with previous books, avoiding spoilers about the main mystery/suspense plot of each book. Several people have asked if they can read this book without reading the previous books. my answer is yes, you could if you really wanted to. But I agree with Patti over at Book Addict that if you do you are missing the full impact of the story. The buildup and history of these characters add so much I would avoid it if you can! You won’t be sorry.

Fans of this series know what a hugely important and controversial book Prey, book 4, was. Besides the devastating death of a well loved character, there was shocking (and totally hot!) smexing between Jace and Faythe. Fans have high expectations of Shift and it delivers on every one of them.

Simply put, Faythe Sanders is not the same girl she used to be. Book 1, Stray, introduces her as a mouthy, defiant, and somewhat whiney college student. Her father is Alpha of South Central pride of werecats, and tabbies (female werecats) are rare. So incredibly rare that they are prized and used as pawns in greedy attempts at controlling all the werecat prides. Initially, Faythe wants none of this system and insists she can have a life of her own outside of the pride, away from her family. This series is very much about the growth of Faythe and her finding her own path within the system her natural werecat instincts are longing for.

By the time we get to Shift Faythe is a strong, determined, intelligent, and forward thinking tabby. She no longer denies who she is or what her status means, but instead works to redefine it and make it her own. She is done shying away from the tough choices. She is the first female enforcer for a pride and thrives on the decisions that will lead her to become the first female Alpha. Yet, she is still flawed, she still makes mistakes. Faythe has to face the consequences of one of those mistakes in Shift.

The tension between Marc, Faythe, and Jace in this book is overwhelming. For most of this series there has been tension between Marc and Faythe, could she ever just let go and be with him? I was rooting for him, he was strong and dependable and would let Faythe lead in her own way. He surprises me in Shift and it only adds to my admiration of his character arc.

Jace was always the fun, but flirty guy who made the readers laugh. I never expected him to grow so much over such a short period of time. The events in Prey, changed him drastically. He is no longer willing to be the fun flirty guy who’s intentions aren’t taken seriously. He is making a serious attempt to win Faythe’s heart in Shift and I find myself swooning over his new found Alpha-ness. Faith is going to have to choose and if being with both of them isn’t an option, I don’t know what I want for her!

With so much of this book riding on the relationship between Jace and Marc and Faythe I was worried the overall plot of the werecat pride conflicts would be lost. I should have known better. Rachel Vincent has written a dynamic, fast paced, action driven story that had me hanging on every word. The South Central pride faces new dangers from both a flight of Thunderbird shifters and Carl Malone’s Pride, intent on gaining control of the pride council. Once again Faythe and her enforcers are fighting for their lives and tough decisions have to be made.

This is probably one of the longest reviews I have written and the sad thing is that I could keep on writing! I finished the book this morning and have been unable to think of anything but it all day long. My heart is torn, my nerves are shot, and my emotions are a mess in that way that you can only get from being invested in a great book. Where do they go from here? With only one book in the series left, Alpha can’t come soon enough. Rachel Vincent’s Shifter series is a roller-coaster ride of suspense and emotion that I don’t want to get off.

re-read Oct 2010: I am really glad I took the time to re-read this before starting Alpha. It was good to revisit all the characters and where the book left off. Still a 5 star book to me :)

-----Original Review

*running around in a panic* Arrrrghhhh! I shouldn't have read this so soon. I thought it would take me several days to finish, but I burned through 300 pages this evening because I couldn't put the book down. Now I have to wait until comes out later this year.

As always, this book is full of action just like the last 4 books. You never know what kind of hole Faythe will dig herself into before you start the book. And believe me, she has dug herself one heck of a hole in this one!

Also, as usual, Faythe has me throroughly pissed off for half the book. hehehehe. Nothing new there *grin* Jace had some of his flirty nature back -- HOoRAY! I won't tell you any more about the Jace/Marc plotline because I don't want to spoil the book for you.

I love Rachel Vincent's books. They're action packed and violent, but the heroine is not a wimp who constantly needs rescuing! I can't wait for the next one in the series.

So, I gave the previous book, Prey 5 stars, but have dropped this one down to 4. There's one reason for this: the bloody love triangle. It's ridiculous and I know the whole thing will play out till the last book and yet I know who she will chose, I mean really it's no contest. Even if you prefer the underdog (ha or cat!) you still know exactly who Faythe will pick. And it bugs me that it's being dragged out hurting everyone more. I really detest love triangles.

But, now that I have gotten my cryptic (I didn't want to give spoilers) whinge out the way, lets move on to the glowing 4 stars I did give Shift. All 4 of which are because I love the fast pace and story and the addition of the Thunderbirds made the whole thing more exciting.

I am dying to see how things turn out, and I another aspect of this series I love is just how much I hate the bad guy, Malone. It isn't often that the bad guy evokes this kind of deep seated resentment in me, but Vincent has out done herself and really created a character you can't help but despise. It's a strange thing to enjoy about a book, but I get so sick of bleh baddies, so having someone like Malone, really made me back Faythe and co more, I really need to see that guy suffer.

Another good book, despite my whinge and I both look forward and dread reading the last book in the series; it will mean it really is over!

'' Kendimi Looney Tunes karakterleri gibi hissediyorum. Yalnız bu bölümde Tweety , Tom'u yiyiyor.''

Tam bu seri daha iyi olamazdı derken yine Rachel beni şaşırttı. Bu kitap diğer bütün kitaplardan farklıydı. Bu sefer ;kedicikler vs. gökkuşlar .

Kısaca kitabın konusu şöyle ; Faythe'in Gururu savaşa hazırlanıyordur.

Ok ok I listened via audiobook, I loved the book it was great it goes with the story but the bird people speak. Eeeeek grates on my nerves something bad

Mark and Faythe have some talking to do; Jase and Faythe have some talking to do. A lot of words need to be spoken.

Malone is taking strides against the Pride, and I think the next book shit is going to hit the fan.

Faythe has some pretty bad injuries in this book and you gotta feel for her pain. I mean OUCH!

KC is going to have some struggles mentally with everything she has endured. But she is a strong female and I think she will pull through just fine.

Very much enjoyed this book and can’t wait to start the next. I am going to be sad when its over.

Bekliyoruz.

This was a great one to read as there was a lot of action going on and you are introduced to a new breed of shifter, the Thunderbirds, and finally Faythe has grown up enough to accept that if she is to be the Alpha she needs to make the hard decisions and live with the choices she has made.

This book is hard to review with out spoiling the storyline, but here are some random thoughts.

I have never been a fan of Faythe's mother, but in the first part of this book she finally steps up and becomes the person we heard she was when she was Faythe's age, and how fun it is.

Manx seems like she is getting ready to select a mate and it is interesting who she seems leaning towards.

It also in interesting how when someone like Malone wants power how evil they are willing to go to see things their way in the end. I feel sorry for all those around him, his wife, kids, and enforcers. They are in a tenuous state where if they don't go along with him and his plans it is the end of them, he will do whatever it takes to come out on top.

The whole Faythe/Marc/Jace love triangle is firmly established, neither guy is going to give her up. Up until this book I was firmly in the camp of Marc, but now have changed to Jace. Ethan's death and his tryst with Faythe have changed him into a better man, one who Marc can no longer discount.

I can't wait for the next book to see how it all settles out!!

Loved this book. I can't see how there is only going to be one more book in the series. I feel like there are too many loose ends to tie up. It was good to see Faith taking charge it this book and getting ready to become Alpha. Emotionally this book was a rollercoster.... the whole love triangle between Faith, Marc and Jace is almost too much to take! I love them both and I will be disappointed no matter who she chooses because I love them both!

Faythe ROCKS!!! I just don't know how I am going to be able to wait for the next book, Alpha--It sounds like it is the final book in this series--anyone know?

When I first started reading about the Thunderbirds, I was kinda like--uh-oh, where is she taking this one? What was I thinking? Of-course it was awesome! It looks like the Thunderbirds will prove to be a handy-dandy little ally for the Sanders Pride--thank goodness, because they need some powerful ammo on their side. Oh, and I am so glad that jackass, Calvin is finally being exposed for the conniving little snake he is--argh! he gets my blood boiling!

I am Team Jace all the way. Don't get me wrong, I like Marc too, I just like Jace better and I am so pumped that he is finally displaying his potential. I am curious to see how Greg feels about Faythe's dilemma between Jace and Marc--I really think he is going to support her in whomever she chooses. I think she has proven to her Alpha father that she is worthy of the position she is destined to hold in the future--so far from that spoiled little rebel we met in book #1.

Oh the anticipation...

Just a brief review. Shift is the fifth book in the Shifters series, which is a series I've been reading since November last year. I've really liked all the books in the series so far, giving most of them around 4 stars, because they've all been super fun and enjoyable, with great actions, steamy romance scenes, and a lot of comedic moments. Shift was no exception. Just as fun, just as exciting, and with the added bonus of cool new creatures!

Thunderbirds, or werehawks as I described them to my boyfriend, are completely unique, unlike anything I've ever read about in a book. I LOVED them, and I want a book series by Rachel Vincent on these creatures and their society. I loved way the story was written, and Faythe's love for Kaci. I also liked the

I cannot wait to read the last book in the series, although it makes me sad to know there'll be no more Faythe Sanders. But there's also a spinoff series which I'll definitely be reading soon!

Yet again Rachel Vincent provides us with another story that grips us from the start... we are now fast approaching the ending of a fight that has been brewing from book one and although each book has had its own dilema, the same set of circumstances are lingering in the background. The last book is on the horizon and Shift provides the cliff hanger to being the next and last chapter.... I am already on it!!! Fantastic!!!

Faythe’s pack is preparing werecats of North America are poised on the edge of the civil war

Until a new threat appears Thunderbirds. None of them are used to fighting the birds and they scrabble desperately to find some way to stop the assault

As ever, Faythe and her fellow tabbies are prime targets.

This book has opened the world building of the series a lot more to include another of the shapeshifter creatures that occupy this world. The Thunderbirds

It would have been really nice if “Thunderbirds actually involved even a shred of Native American mythology beyond just the word. Instead it just means “werebird. Actually, given the “spicy latinos of the first book, I think I’m leery of wishing this book includes more than its two token latino characters.

The werebirds themselves are relatively interesting especially since they seem to show a very different culture which should, really, be a wonderful challenge to all that is wrong with werecat culture. It’s not patriarchal and it’s completely non-hierarchical. I also like how they’ve adopted a level of avian nature into the shapeshifters with things like carrion eating. One of the many complaints I’ve had of the werecat world building is how it has failed to really establish them as cats (like they keep going for “runs. Cats play in many ways, but they’re not wolves, they’re not endurance runners)

While the world building of the Thunderbirds is interesting and I’d actually like to see more of this new society, the plot is just a bit meh

The Thunderbirds are attacking but the sheer inability of them to actually sensibly change their decisions is dubious

Similarly the werecats inability to come up with any strategy to fight back seems equally dubious. All they did was cower inside, completely unable to fight back against a Thunderbird strategy that seemed limited to picking them up (sometimes needing 2 birds) and the dropping them. On top of that we had an equally dubious decision for Faythe and Kaci to go running off virtually unguarded for their own safety

This is a classic hallmark of dubious decisions pushing a plot that has a gaping hole in it. This whole decision is there to keep Faythe centred on the plot line rather than find a more obvious solution that actually makes sense but doesn’t involve her (like call in other pack members and telling them to come with guns).

Another significant portion of the book is consumed by a ridiculously tiresome love triangle which has designated-love-interest-but-not-really being eternally distracted by the need to rebel and arm wrestle Mark. It consumes a lot of pages and really shows that he’d make a terrible Alpha simply because he cannot focus on the task at hand

Like with the last few books I have to return to how this series is ruined by the awfulness of the first book (and, to a lesser extent, the second). The thing is, while I think there is a considerable amount of author regret over that book, there’s no real walking back what happened in that first book and the context of that continues on.

One of the most galling of which is the continued comparison of Faythe to Kaci (I think there was even a deliberate choice to give them unusually spelled names to emphasise the similarities). Kaci is in the same position that Faythe was in book one rebellious, determined to insert herself while everyone (Faythe included) tries to shelter and protect her. She is even hunted by ALL THE THINGS because she is a Tabby and that’s basically what this entire world is built on precious objects-who-are-not-people

You know how sometimes you wait for something you really want and when you finally get it you've built it up so much you're disappointed? Well, that did NOT happen here. I'd previously read the first four books in this series and LOVED them (my review here) and Shift did not disappoint either.

Shift takes up immediately where Pride ended: The South Central werecat pack is divided and a battle is coming. There's also retribution to be made for a death, and although she's trying to put it off, Faythe is going to have to come clean about some of her actions in book 4.

The action in this book starts right at the beginning; in the first chapter, as the pack is discussing plans for battle, Faythe takes Kaci out for a walk and in moments Kaci is snatched up by a huge bird - a Thunderbird. They soon realize their pack is under attack by the Thunderbirds in response to the death of one of their flock members. Faythe and her father know they've been framed but don't have any proof; the Thunderbirds are not giving up and two more werecats are dead. Faythe ends up in the Thunderbird's aviary and must find a way to prove who the real killer is or Kaci will die and the rest of the pack will be killed by the Thunderbirds.

I could not put this book down. At every turn I wondered what would happen next. The timeline for this book was only a few days, but so much happened - I was on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading. The book doesn't leave you with a cliffhanger, but there are a lot of unresolved issues still dancing around the werecat world - plenty of stuff to resolve in Book 5, Alpha, which comes out in October 2010. As I understand it, Alpha is the last book in this series.

I will say this - although this could be read as a stand-alone, you really won't get the full impact of everything that goes on without reading the whole series. Trust me, this won't be a hardship - this is one of my favorite series out there right now and IMO doesn't get the props it deserves.

I give Shift 5 out of 5 stars.

Well, I waited a while to read this one even though I had it at home. After reading Prey, I was so disgusted with Faythe. How could she sleep with Jace when she loves Marc...
Well, I truly love the series and Rachel Vincent is an extraordinary writer, so I began Shift.
I was so glad to see the book did not revolve around the love triangle.
The storyline was fabulous and fast moving. I was hanging on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happens. The introduction of the Thunderbirds was fascinating and intriguing. They are definitely a different breed than the werecats.
But, on to the love triangle. I do not know why Rachel wrote that in...Jace is just not Alpha material and he is NOT the man that Marc is. I also do not see a bond with Faythe and Jace that Faythe and Marc have. Sure, they may love each other, but it is not the deep and passionate love she shares with Marc. I also can't believe that Marc would still want her. But, she is the heroine of the books...
Overall, great series and can't wait for the next book!

This book was intense!

Where to start? Let’s just say a certain megalomaniac, misogynistic werecat has a vision to become the head of the Territorial Council, no matter what. He plays mean and dirty and always seems to be a step ahead of Faythe’s pride.

Faythe, Faythe, Faythe. What can I say? I do like Faythe. I like her feistiness, her determination, and her developing diplomatic skills. Her timing sucks. Her ability to predict the consequences of her actions needs improvement. The dreaded love triangle makes an appearance in this book.

I absolutely loved the Thunderbirds. They were an awesome addition to the story, also adding opportunities for much needed comic relief along the lines of Tweety and Sylvester jokes. They also provided the funniest line ever:
“Because your people your Pride – again he said it like a dirty word. - Killed one of our most promising young cocks.
I had to chuckle there.

I am so glad that Alpha was already out. I don’t think I would have wanted to wait for it.

Dear female protagonists of the fictional world:

Please refrain from keeping relationship-threatening secrets to yourself. Please. Because we all know that at some point tensions are going to boil-over and shit will hit the fan.

Use that brain - the one you have somewhere deep within the recesses of your head, past the cobwebs and posters of shirtless guys. Use it and you will find life is so much easier!! Yes! Using your brain means that 95% of the time you will not end up in situations (e.g. brawls, yell-fests, cages, bird nests and half way up trees with you arm split open) that you would give anything to get out of.

You'll also probably be more likely to see your 30th birthday. Increased life expectancy is a perk of being a thinking, intelligent (and breathing) woman!

So before your life becomes a teen soap opera...
Stop.
Think.
And tell the truth before you're left a spinster with 76 cats watching Bold and the Beautiful re-runs.

Yours sincerely,
Real Girls of the World.

OMGOMGOMG!
I can't believe I finally got to read this book. It took me forever to read it, I know, but I finally did.

And just loved it!!!

The plot of this series is simply outstanding. If you like UF you will just adore this series. And what I like the most about it is that with every book it gets better and better. As most of my goodread friends have already read it I won't loose time writing a review saying things you have already read hundreds of times.

Just wanted to say that it was totally worth the waiting and that I'm dying to see what will happened in the next book. Can't believe it will be the last *snif*.

Oh, also that I hate to see Fayth playing with both guys and that they are ok with it. Luckily it will all be settle in next book. I hope everything turns up well. I just want a HEA for all the characters. Don't know how Vincent will make that happened though...

----Spoiler Free Review----

Shift by Rachel Vincent is the fifth book in the Shifters series. The pride is hurting after the loss of Ethan in the previous book, and his lost is felt by everyone. But as problems with another shifter species begin to arise, can this tension be resolved before things get out of hand?

A new shifter species not seen before in previous books is introduced, the thunderbirds. Yet, the pride’s relations with them are frosty, as a cat has killed one of their birds, and they are misled by Malone into thinking it was someone from their pride that did it.

Focussing further on the new species, they are very capable fighters, being able to shift in the blink of an eye, something the were-cats are unable to do. They are also capable of lifting a full grown human over thirty feet into the air, then dropping them to their death. Yet, their system of justice is warped, and the hoops Faythe must jump through in order to give them sufficient evidence of the innocence of their pride in the bird’s death was frustrating. I felt it was dragged out in places, which decreased my enjoyment of the book.

The change in Jace’s character was the most significant however, as since Ethan’s death he is more serious and less joking than his usual self. However, his challenging of Marc’s authority will have far reaching consequences.

Overall, I give this book a rating of 3 out of 5 stars.

Oh. My. God. This is just a heart-stopper. I can't tell you how many times I stopped breathing. The tension alone is enough to leave you gasping. There is no mistaking that will be a heart-breaker. Faythe is left with so many decisions to make, I do not envy her at all.

I don't want to say too much but I will disclose the following:

1) Faythe is referred to as Kaci's mother and I have no problem with that because Faythe truly acts like it. She selflessly puts her life in danger on multiple occasions to protect Kaci. Faythe sees a lot of herself in the young tabby and doesn't want her to make the same mistakes she has. Both have suffered so much pain and horror, they share a similar strength and have grown a great deal over the course of the books.

2) Faythe makes some Alpha-ish decisions. Big ones. Ones that test her sense of honour and morality. Understandably she finds them tough and hesitates to go further in one case where her father criticises her choice. I don't blame her, she values life as she should but she needs to find a balance and look at the future welfare of both herself and her pride when making these life and death decisions. Mercy is not always the answer.

3) The Thunderbirds. At first I thought they came across as heartless and unreasonable, and their warped sense of honour bugged me until near the end when we see how they deliver justice and how they interact with their children, part of the reason why they can't really socialise with humans. Young Thunderbirds shift easily and uncontrollably, the smallest change in their emotions and part of their bodies shifts in the blink of an eye. That's another thing, Thunderbirds shift lightening fast and have powerful upper bodies and weak spindly legs because they prefer flight. They make formidable opponents. The werecats may be good at facing earth-bound enemies but ones that drop out of the sky without warning with 10ft+ wingspans, a strong sharp beak, huge talons on their feet and claws at the end of their wings - not so much. The Thunderbirds are democratic (there has never been an Alpha), they are practical almost to the point of being unemotional and the punishment for the murder of one of their own kind can only be looked upon as painfully gruesome. *shivers*

4) Calvin Malone. Ugh. What a despicable man: he's a manipulative, self-serving SOB and his greed and lust for power may very well be his downfall. He does something which may have triggered the beginning of his demise and I'm hoping it has because that would be incredibly satisfying. He's responsible for so many deaths. The way he treats his enforcers, his own children, his blatant disregard for life in pursuit of power - I'd like to kill him myself!

5) The action. Oh man. There's impressive adrenaline pumping action as always, casualties on all sides (the Saunders pride, the Malone pride and the Thunderbirds) plus murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, testicular disfigurement (totally deserved), facial disfigurement (twice - once in retribution, again totally deserved) and more. The fast pace never let up, never gave you time to relax because every time you started to something shocks you, jumps out or makes you burst out laughing or cheering (the ball-busting was one of those occasions!).

6) Jace vs Marc - What everyone wants to know: Faythe's indiscretion with Jace IS revealed but I won't say how, I don't want to ruin it for you, sorry, though there are several moments when you think "Oh God, here it comes" ratcheting up that tension even more because we know it's coming, we just don't know how and when. Each of these moments gives a subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) hint to Marc about what is going on, it's frightening the number of times everything comes so close to exploding. And when the dirty laundry is finally aired you feel just as embarrassed, hurt, confused, scared and lonely as Faythe does.

I honestly don't know what will happen. Most of the book revolves around Jace and Marc with an emphasis on Jace, giving him a chance to show what he has to offer Faythe. Even though Jace has lost some of his happy fun-loving attitude since Ethan's death, with Faythe he regains some of the sparkle in his eye. There are times when Marc seems perfect for her and times where he drops the ball and Jace effortlessly picks it up. Marc is superior in a lot of ways but Jace, where Marc will dispute and challenge Faythe, Jace will trust her most of the time to do the right thing without any explanation or argument, a refreshing change. Now this can be both a good thing and a bad thing but Faythe likes to have room to make her own mistakes and Jace has always given her that, though as we all know Marc has been claustrophobic in his over-protectiveness in the past.

She obviously loves them both and I don't know how she's going to choose because I'm torn too. Normally I can't stand love triangles but this one is so realistic that I don't mind. I can't help but wonder if the choice will be taken away from Faythe. Will one of them die? Will one of them become Alpha of another pride? Overall, this is all just messy and I'm truly scared about the events in - this book will be EVERYTHING. I'm certain it will be book that will require a box of tissues in order to get through it. September cannot come soon enough and I'm grateful I don't have to wait until next February. Two books in one year, we're so lucky!

I bow down in respect to 's astonishing writing ability, to make readers feel her characters' emotions and have them laugh and cry right along with them. It's beautiful. After reading some really crappy and so-so books lately, this was an utter joy to read. 5 stars!

Faith was definitely more mature in this but I seriously hate the love triangle drama. It was so STUPID AND POINTLESS!! Plus Faith had so much other shit to deal with. I really wish Malone had died in this book. The thunderbirds were really weird, but an interesting addition. I didn't really gain anything from this book, it essentially was set up for the last book.

I've never read anything by Rachel Vincent before but I have heard great things about her writing and her Faythe Saunders series. Its a series I've always wanted to pick up but with the ever growing TBR pile that I have it's another series that I have yet to get to.

It might seem odd then to start the series at book 5, but the books can be read as a stand alones so you don't need to have read anything in the series before this book.

You are dropped straight into the story. Faythes brother has been killed and this story picks up a week after his death, which incidentally is a week after the last book 'Prey' finished. Personally I love when an author does this, it lets you feel engaged with the story development and the characters development, it allows you to feel like you're sitting down with an old friend. In my case series that do this leave me highly anticipating the next in the series whether or not it ends on a cliff hanger or not, and I would imagine this is definitely the case with fans of Rachel Vincent’s work and series.

But I digress, onto the story in hand. This review might be a little short as I don't want to give too much away in the form of spoilers for the book. I apologise in advance if I inadvertently reveal any spoiler material!

Shift begins with Faythe's Pride plotting revenge on the person responsible for her brothers death. But as with most good plots, a curve ball is thrown in and the story takes a twist.

The pride are attacked for reasons unknown and completely unexpected by the Thunderbirds. Faythe vows to discover the reason behind the attacks as the Thunderbirds advantage of being able to fly means that her Pride are at a distinct disadvantage and the attacks are very dangerous.

Combine all of this with Faythe trying to look out for Kaci a teenage Tabi and you have one heck of a story.

I loved Faythe's character. Everything she goes through, the decisions she has to make to keep those she cares for and loves safe coupled with the decisions she has to make professionally really made me care for her and it mattered to me when things went right/wrong.

Reading this book has left me wanting to read this series from the start and watch Faythe grow into the character she's become in Shift. And of course learning more about the world that Rachel Vincent has created.

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone although you don't need to have read the rest in the series to thoroughly enjoy Shift, I do think it would make for a richer experience to read the others in the series first. That being said I couldn't put the book down and if you have read the others in the series and haven't read this..... What are you waiting for?

The next installment of this series Alpha out later this year on October 1st, this sadly will be the last in the series but it is one I will be highly anticipating. Plus the cover is totally HOT!!

Rating 4.5/5

Faythe Sanders is a werecat "Tabbie", who is known to find or attract more trouble than she should be able to handle. But with the help of her loved ones, she manages to dig herself out every time. Or, for the most part. This tradition continues in the 5th installment of the Shifters series. First, I would recommend that this series be read in order, from the beginning. It helps you attain the full effect of the tension built up thoughout the series.

WARNING: There may be spoilers about the previous books. If you haven't yet read them, I would stop here.

This book picks up about a week after Prey leaves off. And the tension carries over. The Pride is preparing for war while recovering from the tragic events of the last book. Faythe has a lot on her plate. She has to have a serious conversation with Marc about Jace. She's trying to guide Kaci through her transition into "shifter-dom". She's dealing with her grief over the loss of her brother. And now a new threat to the pride comes from left field.

As usual with this series, there is plenty of action. There is also plenty of tension Mainly between Faythe, Marc, and Jace.) Faythe has to find a way to tell Marc about what happened with Jace. But how can she do that when she's not even sure how she feels about him? Between trying to help her Father find ways to protect the Pride, fielding Jace's advances, and diverting Marc's attention from the changes in Jace's behavior toward her, Faythe still manages to kick some major boot-ay. Oh, and let's not forget how she likes to get herself beat up too! But all that doesn't stop her from diving in head first and taking the responsibilty to try and fix things.

I love this series. Faythe has grown up so much over the course of these 5 books. And I've thoroughly enjoyed following her on that journey. I'm attatched to quite a few of the characters in her story, as well. I adore most of the enforcers, Owen, Vic, Parker, Marc, Jace, and even Lucas (of whom we see precious little). Faythe's parents, have earned my respect as well. And I very much despise Cal Malone, as intended.

Marc and Jace.....hmmm. I'm torn and don't envy Faythe's position. I love Marc and his loyalty. He loves Faythe so much and always has her back no matter where they are in their relationship. But he tends to be very broody. Jace, on the other hand, knows how to lighten things up when the situation calls for it. And since Ethan's death, he's really started to grow into his potential. He's stronger for it and I think he makes a great match for Faythe. But, I could go on forever about these two.

I'll cut the incoherent babble and end here. I'm looking forward to reading Alpha in October. I excited about where Faythe's story will go.

Overall, I liked this book better than any of the others so far. The action was more exciting and I liked that it took place outside of the Sanders home. I think part of the reason I didn't enjoy the first few books as much (part of the reason, because there were a lot of problems with them) was because they were so limited in focus and nearly all the secondary males blended together. By moving the story out of that zone, it also freed up more time to focus on the primary characters. The show-downs were good and I liked the justice that was meted out by various different people...and since I'm a fan of Jace's, I'm glad to see he got more character development and ink.

I do think it's kind of cheating to introduce a new species into the fifth book of a series, however, when there's been no interaction (and only a couple of brief speculative mentions, if I recall correctly) with other paranormal ones. I was okay with the thunderbirds (what a weird animal to pick!), although I did giggle a couple of times at unintentionally funny moments, especially when they were flying away with Faythe. I couldn't help it.

Every time I think I'm starting to like Faythe a little better, however, she does more stupid and hurtful things. She's a little less loud-mouthed and rash than she was in the first 3 books, and I understand what happened in the last one, but...honestly. This situation between her and Marc and Jace is so ridiculous and drawn out. She keeps protesting it's not a good time to tell Marc about what happened while he was kidnapped, but then Jeez! You can't fault someone for not being sure of her feelings, but you can expect that they'll try and respect the other parties as much as possible. Which she didn't.

A lot of people get pissed off by love triangles, but I don't really mind them because I sort of expect that a. the authors want to create romantic conflict and b. it often represents a choice the heroine is making in life as well. So while I get annoyed if the situation drags on interminably or when one option is clearly better than another, I don't get all huffy if I see them in books. But I don't have any respect for woman who doesn't have the guts to make a decision or to mitigate the damage and hurt she knows it will cause.

I'm obviously going to read the last book since I've made it this far, but I'm still really surprised by how much better the author's YA series is. And it's funny how much more mature and rational Kaylee is overall, even though she's so much younger--and a lot less experienced--than Faythe is.
