Hermann Hesse

Many works, including Siddhartha (1922) and Steppenwolf (1927), of German-born Swiss writer Hermann Hesse concern the struggle of the individual to find wholeness and meaning in life; he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1946.

Other best-known works of this poet, novelist, and painter include The Glass Bead Game , which, also known as Magister Ludi, explore a search of an individual for spirituality outside society.

In his time, Hesse was a popular and influential author in the German-speaking world; worldwide fame only came later. Young Germans desiring a different and more "natural" way of life at the time of great economic and technological progress in the country, received enthusiastically Peter Camenzind , first great novel of Hesse.

Throughout Germany, people named many schools. In 1964, people founded the Calwer Hermann-Hesse-Preis, awarded biennially, alternately to a German-language literary journal or to the translator of work of Hesse to a foreign language. The city of Karlsruhe, Germany, also associates a Hermann Hesse prize.

Vintage Hesse!

Sad story about an ambitious boy who slowly breaks down when facing the pressure of the adult world. While showing the catastrophic effects of a rigid educational system and of excessive parental expectations, it also hints at the responsibility of the young to get to grips with life and not just give up and drift along.

As important and relevant now as when it was written!

Unterm Rad = Beneath the Wheel, Hermann Hesse

Beneath the Wheel is the story of Hans Giebenrath, a talented boy sent to a seminary in Maulbronn. His education is focused completely on increasing his knowledge, and neglects personal development.

**Spoiler Alert**
His close friendship with Hermann Heilner, a less academically assiduous and more liberal fellow student, is a source of comfort for Hans. Heilner is expelled from the seminary, and Giebenrath is sent home after his academic performance decreases in tandem with the onset of symptoms of mental illness.

Back home, he finds coping with his situation difficult, having lost most of his childhood to scholastic study, and thus having never formed lasting personal relationships with anyone in his village.

He is apprenticed as a blacksmith, and seems to find satisfaction in the work; it is visceral and concrete, as opposed to the intellectual abstraction of scholarly pursuit. Despite some personal fulfillment in his existence, Hans never fully adjusts to his new situation. On a pub crawl in a neighbouring village, he and his colleagues get drunk. Giebenrath leaves the group to walk home early. Later, ...

¡°A soul that is ruined in the bud will frequently return to the springtime of its beginning and its promise-filled childhood, as though it could discover new hopes there and retie the broken threads of life. The shoots grow rapidly and eagerly, but it is only a sham life, that will never be a genuine tree.¡±

If you're an educator, you need to read this book. It's unfortunate that today's education crushes the individual spirit and is more about bubbling scantrons. It's all about money by the testing companies, no wonder most americans are clueless about our nation's history. Years of watching reality television and American Gladiators I suppose. Hesse is the best writer ever in my opinion, just his use of description is amazing in itself. I love the ending of this book. It is sad and beautiful. Hesse uses the eastern philosophy of yin and yang, when a young student meets his opposite at school a new world opens up. A must read.

2,5 siendo generoso.

In Japan, this is one of the most popular title by this author, and like other teens who like reading, I read and loved it. It doesn't look very popular in the US . . . interesting.

A few other books I picked up in those days partly because my friends were reading them -- ah, the peer pressure! -- should I mention I was a top student? --were: , , , short stories by . . . lovely assortment, isn't it? We didn't know the existence of or .

School started this week, and I wonder what today's teens are reading.

Underrated brilliance from Hesse about an insanely hard-working student who finally cracks like an egg and has to slow down and appreciate the world around him, even if it kills him. This kind of tale gets pretty trite very easily, but Hesse's Germanic Zen outlook defines existence in a marvelous and offbeat light.

This story showcases Hesse¡¯s brilliant prose mixed with his thoughts on life, aging, and love. In a story centered around a bright, gifted, yet timid boy Hesse shows both sides of the spectrum, celebrating the pain and sorrow along with the joys and surprises of life. The boy¡¯s tale is equally beautiful and tragic. He has extraordinary gifts that simply do not fit into the demanded ¡°one narrow path¡± of life for small town German students at the time. Unfortunately, he is crushed beneath the wheel like a cog in the machine, and the world does not benefit from his talents and vision. This boy was called to join in the higher realm of thinkers and people, yet due to the conditions of society he is unable to live this out. Perhaps a line where Hesse describes learning sums up the view of society and life just as well, ¡°Every day true scholarship seemed more beautiful, more difficult, more worthwhile.¡± In this novel Hesse shows life as beautiful, difficult, and worthwhile if one can overcome the obstacles presented by a society intent on suffocating dreams. The clear menace in this tale is the system of school, organized religion, and people who place their demands on students instead of letting them explore the world. Our protagonist is the victim, but the intended effect is that the reader take away this lesson and not join their ranks. Hesse still celebrates life and the poetry of every moment, and he viciously attacks those who suppress it in this tragic tale.
One question I had while reading this novel is whether or not adulthood itself is another enemy. The transition from childhood to adulthood is performed though love, which Hans experiences first through friendship, then through a hint of homosexuality, and then finally through heterosexual longing. The transition into adulthood opens the door to pain and suffering. Though love is beautiful, it is not clear in this novel whether or not Hesse thinks its beauty is worth the price of innocence lost. The passages describing Hans falling in love are absolutely stunning, however the cost of love remains unsettled. Is adulthood and love worth the pain of growing up? Hesse leaves this unanswered, which is a surprise in this novel. Another surprise is the passage about a homosexual experience and an unlikely person at the end of the book to accept any of the blame. There are questions open to consideration through a tale that describes the beauty of life through poetic prose. A damn good book, classic Hesse.

Quotes
It was possible to live in this town and give the appearance of being educated without knowing the speeches in Zarathustra. 5
Thus his future was mapped out, for in all of Swabia there existed but one narrow path for talented boys ¨C that is, unless their parents were wealthy. 5
In a single hour he introduced Hans to an entirely new approach to learning and reading. Hands received an intimation of what tasks and puzzles lay hidden in each line and word, how thousands of scholars and investigators had expended their efforts since the earliest times to unravel these questions, and it seemed to him that he was being accepted into the ranks of these truth-seekers this very hour. 47
Every day true scholarship seemed more beautiful, more difficult, more worthwhile. 47
It has occurred to many people while they stood on this square that it would be just the right place for the good life and happiness, for something lively and gratifying to grow, for mature and good people to think glad thoughts and produce beautiful, cheerful works. 57
Proud and praiseworthy feelings and high hopes swelled in their breasts and it did not occur to a single one of them that this day he was selling his child for a financial advantage¡it did not occur to any of the boys, nor to their fathers, that all this would perhaps not really be free. 65
¡°He realized that there are certain sins and omissions beyond forgiveness and repentance and it seemed to him that the stretcher bore not the tailor¡¯s little son but Heilner, who now took all the pain and anger caused by Han¡¯s faithlessness with him far into another world where people were judged not by their grades and examination marks and scholastic success but soley in accord with the purity or impurity of their consciences¡they realized for a fleeting moment how irrecoverable and unique is each life and youth. 94
Anyone with a touch of genius seems to his teachers a freak from the very first¡[a teacher¡¯s:] task is not to produce extravagant intellects but good Latinists, arithmeticians and sober decent folk¡among true geniuses the wounds almost always heal. As their personalities develop, they create their art in spite of school¡thus the struggle between rule and spirit repeats itself year after year from school to school. 100
He was like someone in love for the first time: he felt capable of performing great heroic deed but not the daily chore of boring, petty work. 103
Their faces displayed the whole spectrum of shadings between vanishing childishness and budding manhood. 106
Hans¡¯ thoughts and dreams now moved in this world to which he had been so long a stranger. He sought refuge from his great disappointment and hopelessness in a past that had been good to him. In those days he had been full of hope, had seen the world lying before him like a vast enchanted forest holding gruesome dangers, accursed treasures and emerald castles in its impenetrable depths. He had entered a little way into this wilderness but he had become weary before he had found miracles. 138
He stared at her with a mixture of unfamiliar desire and bad conscience. In this hour something broke inside him and a new, alien but enticing land with distant blue shores opened up before his soul. He did not know or could only guess what the apprehension and sweet agony signified, and did not know which was stronger, pain or desire.
But the desire signified¡the first intimation of the mighty forces of life, and the pain signified that the morning peace had been broken, that his soul had left that childhood land which can never be found again¡He must find his own way and be his own savior. 150
Fearful but shaken to the roots of his being, he felt the nearness of a great mystery, not knowing whether it would be delicious or dreadful but having a foretaste of both. 153
The pain and anger over this loss and the restlessness of his inflamed but unsatisfied passion came together in a single, agonizing confusion¡In this way he discovered ¨C perhaps too soon ¨C his share of the secret of love, and it contained little sweetness and much bitterness. 165

An English translation of my review can be found below.

----------------------

This novel reminded me what I found so compelling about Hermann Hesse in my youth. He was a wonderful writer! His precise descriptions of both the inner life of the unhappy cloister student Hans Giebenrath and the contradictory beauty of the physical environment, in which he perished, are extraordinary. The wonderfully beautiful language of the novel has an almost magical effect on the reader.

¡°Under the Wheel¡± is autobiographical in the sense that Hesse represents himself in Hermann Heilner, Hans¡¯s best friend. Hermann, a very gifted but rebellious young man, cannot cope with the repressive school. Since he refuses as a matter of principle to conform to the social order, he is expelled.

Hans, in turn, personifies Hesse¡¯s eponymous brother, who committed suicide because of his own torments after school destroyed him psychologically. In the novel, Hans is likewise expelled, but primarily due to his poor health (dizziness-inducing headaches), although the headmaster also resents the fact that he has fallen under Hermann¡¯s influence. For both reasons, he cannot handle the pressure to perform.

UNESCO has recognized the Maulbronn Cloister, where Hesse studied Latin after passing the state examination and where the novel is set, as a World Heritage Site.

Against this backdrop, it is easy to understand why Hesse had the need in the novel to deal with the authoritarian style of schooling in Germany in the early 20th century so unsparingly. His critique of the educational system is convincing.

Favorite quote: ¡°Just don¡¯t wear yourself out, otherwise you¡¯ll end up under the wheel.¡±

This is only Hesse's second novel and not his best. It is somewhat autobiographical and, like many of the author's novels, is a tale of a young man's disillusionment, rebellion and self-discovery. My notes on the book from the time of reading summarize it as follows: "Raised without a mother and crushed by the ordered, competitive, masculine world's expectations. The destruction of a young spirit."

3.75 The Prodigy, also known as Beneath The Wheel, is a book that scrutinises youth, the construction of the Self, and the challenges of life which may result in mental health issues, ergo, the book goes beyond a mere exploration or critique of the education system. Hesse¡¯s prose is rich, lyric, and evocative even though the plot does not have a convincing denouement.

The first chapters of the The Prodigy are strong; I especially enjoyed chapters two, three, and four, they felt real and they were elegantly and effectively written and also transmit great sentiment; alas, after Hans leaves the seminar and goes back to his town the story fails to keep me engaged for it feels somehow flat. I am of the opinion that there should have been two more chapters at the seminar for, besides Hans, our protagonist, there was not enough character development. Heilner, for instance, could have been a great character , yet he is not layered. I suspect that Hermann Heilner was meant to represent the rebellious kid we often find at schools, but, is that all there should be? What else is there about Heilner that makes him an individual so unique as to be admired and deeply esteemed by Hans? Hans neglects his own need for space and his scholarly ambitions partly due to his relationship with Heilner, which he places above all; yet, Heilner, does not reciprocate to the same extent. What does having Heilner in his life reveal to Hans that makes his focus change so abruptly? I found Hans¡¯s change in attitude a bit abrupt and inconsistent with his character. This theme needed further exploration.

We are told that Heilner is a genius but we never really know why. The children at the seminar were there because they had brilliant minds, however, the writing never offers a proof of it besides stating that the seminar was a school for privileged intellects. Further, based on the way the story unfolds in the seminar this could have been any other school in Germany; yet, the seminar was not meant to be ¡®any school¡¯ but an elite institution; and therein lies the issue with the narrative. We don¡¯t see, as readers, what is so special about the seminar that confers it it¡¯s great status.

In the The Prodigy, we know most characters superficially; some of them were too stereotypical. I prefer more nuanced characters and I did not find them in this book. I did adore Hans though and I would have liked to learn of these two characters: Flaig and Lucius.

After chapter five ends, the prose continues to be delightfully descriptive, yet that alone was not enough to keep me as invested as I was in previous chapters. The Prodigy has much potential, nonetheless, most of what happens after chapter five was unconvincing and falls flat. In fact, I would have preferred for the book to finish by the end of chapter 5 (which would have made it a novella), rather than to have all the chapters it did and have that contrived and tedious last chapter. The denouement was disappointing not because of the final event but because of how we got ¡®there¡¯.

The problem I see is that, Hesse seems to have lost inspiration precisely at the stage in which the story should have peaked; ergo, the story never fully blossoms. The book has some elements that hint that, by the time Hesse wrote this book, he had a rather manichaean view of the education system.

Overall, this is a good book but not a ¡®must-read¡¯. If you like Hermann Hesse then I do recommend The Prodigy but keep in mind that Hesse¡¯s Narcissus and Goldman is a superior book, thus more memorable. Do not expect The Prodigy to achieve Narcissus and Goldman¡¯s status.

Unterm Rad-Hermann Hesse
Tw for the book: mental illness, depression, suicide, death, sexual assault, alcohol
This book hurts. Especially as a student, moving closer to graduation. Having witnessed various effects of school on different types of students throughout the last 11 years in different school systems I think we all can agree that this book is in its vast majority still from importance.

It tells the story of the perfect student, Hans Giebenrath, who lives in a small town in the southern west of Germany. He does everything his teachers expect and want from and for him, people, including his very proud father, place their hope and project all their dreams onto this boy. From the beginning on the reader feels the pressure and I am sure a lot of people relate to it. Seeing him abandon all his interests and joy in his hobbies, his friends and family and just life in general was painful. He later on develops a, lets say special, relationship with someone, I want to keep this review spoiler free. But this ¡°friendship¡± was one of my favourite things in the book, it was so real and wholesome and especially painful, just like everything else.
The book follows him throughout the time span of about a year and the ending was not very surprising. Honestly, nothing in the plot was, because this is not what made the book captivating.

The writing was refreshing, clear, describing and kind of innocent. By innocent I mean the way mental illness, relationships, sexuality and alcohol were depicted. I kinda like this old German language, so many words and expressions I don¡¯t normally use, they just have a special vibe to them. Also nature played a great role, which was used well in my opinion. The writing style fits the story and does its job. Some expressions were so well chosen, I had to read them twice!

Now, should you read this book? I am convinced that its a good book, but not an easy one. Maybe don¡¯t read it when you¡¯re not well rn, when you¡¯re under pressure due to school as well (this is why I read it during my holidays) If you are someone that has the power to influence a student, the system itself, then please read it.

It is still from importance, it still shows how school as a system works, however, if you read it now, you (hopefully) will realise that a lot of things actually have changed to the better and they probably will continue doing so.

Also, near the end, it also shows the beauty of alternatives to the ¡°academic¡± way. (I don¡¯t mean dying by that lol) A lot of people are convinced that going to university is the only way, or that artisanry is somehow less valuable or primitive. My favourite character was Hermann Heilner! Bye:) let me know what u think if u read it!

This novel is Hesse's indictment of conventional Western education.

Hans Giebenrath is a gifted child and yet his spirit is broken by his parents and his school teachers who want him to be a 'success' without considering his health and happiness. This leads to tragic consequences.

Hesse says in the book that a schoolmaster would rather have a whole class of duffers than one genius...for his task is not to educate unusual boys but to produce good Latinists, mathematicians, and good honest fools. Hesse writes there's a perpetual battle between regulation and spirit and it's repeated in each school in turn and we continue to watch the State and school eagerly occupied in nipping in the bud the handful of profounder and nobler spirits who grow up year by year.
