did not like it

It is not so much that it was a bad book, but it made me want to kill myself.

ex.libris Um, your review is awesome.

Alia I agree with this review. It was a very depressing read.

message 3: by Kai (new) - added it

Kai yeah. I hope it's "I want to kill myself" and one star in a very good way (as in: normally it's at least four stars); I absolutely love that book.

Corinne Absolutely! It was so well written and by the end I was ready to jump off a cliff lol.

Etienne Well, real literature is not for everybody. The author of this review should stick to his raw food books and whatever else he enjoys reading.

ThomyZ Our teacher forced us to read it, telling us the whole time how beloved it was among young people since its first publication.

Every single person in my class hated it.

Lazar Jovanović so what you all wanna kill yourself? you should do it because you obviously don't understand a young and broken soul. fff

Actually, the raw food books got boring. If you had bothered (although not that I would have expected you to), you would have noticed that I've read quite a few Herman Hesse books AND ENJOYED THEM.

Sure. Some people THRIVE on reading about other people experiencing one failure after another, and another, and another, and then dropping dead.

Sounds like Damien understands a young and broken soul only too well.

Damien "Sounds like Damien understands a young and broken soul only too well." I have several friends who have accidentally and intentionally overdosed on heroin, and a few others who killed themselves in other ways. Quite a few others have died between the ages of 2 and 45 of cancer and other diseases, some of which were treatable if they were able to afford it.

message 16: by Jonpatterns (new) - added it

Jonpatterns Sorry to hear that. Terrible to hear some of your friends died just because they couldn't afford treatment.

Lisa the Tech For the love of Pete, don't ever read 'Jude the Obscure' then.

message 18: by Yara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Yara Alshammari I read it because of your comment in my 18th birthday, and kept this a ritual (reading Hermann Hesse in my birthdays).
I feel like reading this book was so perfect for me, because it was the write time. And i felt less alone. Thanks I guess

Juliette I think that was a interesting book, in fact I really like it but your review is awesome 🤣

Mario Ledda That s why at the beghinning it says the dialogues of zarathustra were not known there or something along those lines

message 21: by Paul (new) - rated it 3 stars

Paul Edkins Not the most uplifting story but one star is harsh.
Two stars at least just for the beautiful word craft.

Damien Paul wrote: "Not the most uplifting story but one star is harsh.

I suppose that would be fair, but when I read it back in 1989, I hated it.

message 23: by B (new) - rated it 5 stars

B and yet, here you are.. still.

Damien B wrote: "and yet, here you are.. still."
Yeah, I'm sure my heroin addiction from 1989 to 2000 helped...
